To study the effect of metformin on metabolic parameters, body weight (BW), and waist circumference (WC) in patients with abdominal obesity (AO).The results of using metformin 2000 mg daily for 3 months in 46 patients with AO. The comparison group consisted of 50 people. BW, WC, and blood pressure (BP) were measured; lipid profile parameters and blood insulin concentrations were determined; and Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA) estimates were calculated. Metabolic syndrome (MS) and AO were judged by the 2005 International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria.The study and comparison groups showed were reductions in BW by 4.2 and 1.7 kg and in WC by 4.2 and 1.1 cm, respectively. Metformin used in the patients with AO contributed to a more significant improvement in the lipid profile than in those who received no medication. A decrease in the HOMA index was observed only in the metformin group. The effects of the drug were more pronounced in MS and insulin resistance. The use of metformin in the patients with AO decreased lower BW and HOMA index and improved lipid metabolism even in the absence of MS.The trial has demonstrated that the people with AO may take metformin could be used in to reduce BW and WC and to treat and prevent MS.

To study the specific features of the hormonal status in the development of obesity and metabolic syndrome (MS) in different ethnic groups.The prevalence of obesity and MS was studied in Russian and Chuvash people, the relationship of MS to body mass index (BMI), the levels of insulin, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), and testosterone, and insulin resistance (IR) was assessed.The prevalence of obesity and MS depends on ethnicity and gender (these are more common in the Russians than in the Chuvashes, in the women than in the men). Overweight and obesity versus normal weight are characterized by the higher rate of MS, hyperinsulinemia, and low DHEAS concentrations. The obese men have decreased testosterone levels. The lower DHEAS levels are associated with the presence of MS (association factor +0.36) rather than with the development of obesity (association factor +0.07). In the Russians versus the Chuvashes, the development of MS is more frequently associated with the fall of DHEAS levels and less frequently with the development of IR.The incidence of MS increases with higher BMI, accompanies by IR and hyperinsulinemia. MS in the Russians is associated with the lower DHEAS concentration.

The aim of the work was to study the state of adaptive systems in patients with metabolic syndrome. This cross-sectional randomized trial included 99 women and 32 men. The measured variables were blood levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DGEAS), cortisol, total T3 and T4, lymphocyte count, and muscle endurance (number of squats/min). 43 patients presented with metabolic syndrome (MS) and 88 without it. MS was associated with decreased blood DGEAS and T3 levels, increased lymphocyte count, reduced activity of sympathetic nervous system and muscle endurance.

The prevalence of food behavior abnormalities among people with overweight and obesity. TheTo estimate characteristics of food behaviour among people with overweight and obesity.We examined 188 human of Chuvashia. Anthropometric data was estimated, bodyweight index and waist-hip index were calculated. Infringements of food behaviour were evaluated according to T.G. Voznesenskoj's recommendations.Food behavior abnormalities appeared more often among people with overweight and obesity than among people with normal weight. The prevalence of food behavior abnormalities depended on the presence of abdominal obesity. The frequency of all types of food behavior abnormalities rose among individuals with overweight and obesity. The groups with overweight and obesity turned out comparable in prevalence and structure of food behavior abnormalities.

The relation of hyperuricemia with obesity, arterial hypertension, hyperlipoproteinemia, high intensity of lipid peroxidation, hyperinsulinemia, diabetoid carbohydrate disturbances (abnormal tolerance to carbohydrates and type-II diabetes mellitus) has been investigated in an epidemiological survey of a random population. The study covered 594 citizens of Chuvashia aged 16-65 years (mean age 39.4 +/- 0.5 years). Hyperuricemia is shown to be related with hyperlipidemia, arterial hypertension, obesity, high activity of lipid peroxidation and hyperinsulinemia. It is evident that on the population level hyperuricemia may serve an indicator of hormonal-metabolic athero-, diabetogenic shifts.

Blood serum pregnancy-associated alpha 2-glycoprotein and trophoblastic beta 1-glycoprotein were measured in puerperants with the normal postpartum period and with that complicated by pyo-inflammatory diseases after abdominal delivery. The levels of both proteins were found reduced in the patients with pyo-inflammatory diseases developing after cesarean section as early as on day 1 postpartum. that of alpha 2-glycoprotein by 1.2 times, that of trophoblastic beta 1-glycoprotein twofold.

The dynamics of acute lethal infection with Yersinia pseudotuberculosis (serovar III) grown at 25 degrees C and 37 degrees C, respectively, were studied in guinea-pigs. Using an automated hematology analyzer, the quantity and quality of the host cellular response was determined at the primary site of infection (the peritoneal cavity) and in parallel in the blood. A much more intensive leucocytic response of monocytic type was observed in the animals infected with microorganism grown at 37 degrees C. This type of reaction was associated with a lower mortality rate and a relatively benign progression of the infection.

The effect of serotonin and adrenaline antagonists was tested on the early embryos of mice of three lines. All the substances tested produced an arrest or inhibition of cleavage division and the appearance of anomalies. Serotonin introduced in the incubation medium was effective against some serotoninolytics. We were unable to test the protective effect of adrenaline, as in the concentrations used it has its own effect on the development. From the data obtained, a conclusion is made of the existence in early mouse embryos of the structures sensitive to serotonin and adrenaline antagonists. The assumptions is made from the previously obtained data on the presence of biogenic monoamines in early mouse embryos, of functional activity of prospective mediators of the nervous system at the earliest stages of embryonic development of mammals.

Early embryos of A. lixula are 10–800 times more sensitive to several neuropharmaca than are early embryos of 6 other studied species of sea urchins. Of 53 neuropharmaca studied, 25 were found hyperactive; of 19 other inhibitors of development (mitotic and metabolic poisons) only antimycin A was hyperactive for A. lixula . Both hyperactive neuropharmaca and neuropharmaca with normal activity suppress cleavage divisions and inhibit protein biosynthesis acting as antagonists of intracellular acetylcholine and monoamines. The mechanism responsible for the normal sensitivity and hypersensitivity of early sea urchin embryos is discussed.

Using two fluorimetric techniques, identification and assay of indolylalkylamines have been made in sea urchin eggs and embryos. It was shown that serotonin-like substance of embryonic and adult specimens is not usually homogeneous and consists at least of two components, the main of them being presented by tryptamine or one of its derivatives with the replaced group at amino nitrogen. Serotonin is also present at all the developmental stages investigated although its concentrations are significantly lower. It is suggested that these substances are involved into regulatory processes during early embryogenesis.

During 10 years 1063 patients were treated with lincomycin used parentally or orally at the N. N. Priorov Central Research Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedy. The doses and the rate of its use depended on the state of the patient, its age and weight. Lincomycin was used for the treatment of patients with osteomyelitis or purulent wound infection, as well as for prophylaxis of suppuration. The drug was used for a long period of time under conditions of the same hospital, and it was shown that it remained up to the present days highly effective in therapy of infections and especially bone infections caused by staphylococci sensitive to it. The 10-year study of staphylococcal sensitivity to lincomycin revealed an insignificant increase in the development of resistance to it. The paper presents data on the importance of adequate surgical interventions in addition to the antibiotic therapy in cases with bone infections. A possibility of lincomycin combined use with other antibiotics and gentamicin or kanamycin in particular was shown. Complications, such as diarrhea and urticaria were registered in 11 patients.

Antimycin A blocks cleavage divisions in concentrations 1-10-15-1-10-14 g/ml (experiments on Arbacia lixula) or 1-10-11-1-10-9 g/ml (experiments on sea urchins of the genus Strongylocentrotus). Subthreshold and threshold concentrations of this antibiotic do not affect the sensitivity of fertilized Strongylocentrotus intermedius to 1-benzyl-2, 5-dimethylserotonin, but increase their sensitivity to 5-butyltryptamine by a factor of 3-5. These data provide the basis for a discussion of the possible nature of the reception of serotonin and other low-molecular-weight regulators of early embryogenesis.

The serum levels of hypophysis-thyroid hormones, trophic hypophyseal hormones (STH and prolactin), and cortisol were studied in depressed patients. A total of 52 subjects were under investigation: 52 healthy persons (control), 27 depressed patients of which 8 had neurotic and 9 endogenous depression. The data point to a "concealed" hypothyroid state in depressed patients without overt clinical signs of endocrine disorders. The STH and prolactin hypophyseal secretion was upset that was evidenced by the decrease in these hormones blood serum contents (-74% and 37%, respectively). The cortisol blood level was also decreased though to a lesser degree (-15.4%). Different degrees of changes in STH and prolactin levels reflecting the hormones interrelationship, allowed the authors to recommend the STH/prolactin ratio as an additional diagnostic test for neurotic (0.230 +/- 0.058) and endogenous (0.0425 +/- 0.006) depression.
