This study aimed to identify determinants of work readiness and to assess the influences of work readiness on work-related outcomes in graduate nurses.Higher work readiness facilitates smoother role transitions of new graduate nurses. However, determinants of work readiness had not been fully examined. In addition, the relationships between work readiness and work-related outcomes, such as coping self-efficacy and occupational commitment, are also crucial but had not been assessed.We recruited 794 graduate nurses and assessed their work readiness before working as nurses. After they commenced their work, we assessed their occupational commitment, coping self-efficacy and intention to remain. All assessments were conducted online.There were 728 (92%) female respondents. The mean scores and standard deviation (SD) of work readiness, coping self-efficacy, occupational commitment and intention to remain were 261.51 (SD: 45.40), 30.30 (SD: 6.13), 81.65 (SD: 11.56) and 11.01 (SD: 2.36), respectively. Based on a regression analysis, determinants of work readiness were positive school climate, student leadership experience, nursing as the primary choice of discipline and perceived influences of COVID-19 on the honorability of being a nurse and the willingness to be a nurse (p .001). Moreover, after adjusted by all demographics and characteristics variables, higher work readiness would result in higher coping self-efficacy (estimated coefficient = 0.06, p .001), occupational commitment (estimated coefficient = 0.06, p .001) and intention to remain (estimated coefficient = 0.01, p = .002).Work readiness is a composite concept affected by psychosocial and environmental factors, which can predict new graduate nurses' future self-efficacy, occupational commitment and intention to remain.The management of new graduate nurses when they begin to work could target their work readiness. Transition programmes that consider our identified determinants can be provided to those who show lower work readiness.

To explore factors associated with depression and COVID-19 related fear among pregnant women and new mothers.A cross-sectional survey was conducted in China from July 2020 to July 2021.A total of 3027 pregnant and new mothers were recruited.Sociodemographic characteristics and the perceptions of the COVID-19 pandemic were collected. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and the Fear Scale was used to assess the depressive and fear level towards the COVID-19 pandemic, respectively.Approximately 17.2% of the participants had depression (PHQ-9 ≥10). In Hong Kong, participants who perceived that they have increased knowledge to prevent infection were less likely to have depression (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.83; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.74-0.94). There was no association between perceived severity if infected and severity of spread and the depression level in our sample. An inverse relationship was found between the COVID-19 related fear level and perceived knowledge to prevent infection (Beta-coefficient [β] = -0.20; 95% CI = -0.38 to -0.02).Public health nurses need to promote accurate and up to date COVID-19 related information at clinical and community settings and implement effective screening for depression and fear symptoms to identify these high-risk groups to improve women's psychological well-being.

ObjectivesTo examine the 15-year secular trends of self-rated health (SRH) and correlates in Chinese adolescents in Hong Kong.DesignA territory-wide population-based panel data study.SettingAnonymised records of the annual health examination from the Student Health Service, Department of Health in Hong Kong.Participants397 324 students in Secondary 2 (US grade 8), 335 902 in Secondary 4 and 113 892 in Secondary 6 during the academic year 1999/2000 and 2014/15.Outcome measuresSRH and lifestyles were self-reported using standardised questionnaires. Sex-standardised and age-standardised prevalence of very poor/poor SRH and its secular annual changes across sex, grade, weight status, breakfast habits, and frequency/duration of aerobic exercises were examined. Their disparities over time were examined by interactions with the academic year in generalised estimating equations.ResultsThe overall prevalence of very poor/poor SRH increased from 9.3% (95% CI: 8.9% to 9.7%) in 1999/2000 to 15.5% (15.1% to 15.8%) in 2014/15. Very poor/poor SRH was more prevalent in girls (adjusted OR: 1.02), in those having unemployed parents (1.29), being overweight (1.42) or obese (2.62), eating breakfast away from home (1.27) and skipping breakfast (1.49) or doing ConclusionsIncreasing prevalence of very poor/poor SRH from 1999/2000 to 2014/15 was found among Hong Kong Chinese adolescents, which was greater in girls, adolescents being overweight/obese and those having unemployed parents or unhealthy lifestyles. Strategies to reduce health inequality should consider multiple factors, especially modifiable factors including lifestyles.

Background How weight status changes with time may affect self-esteem was seldom studied. We identified the distinct trajectories of overweight/obesity over age and assessed their associations with different domains of self-esteem in Hong Kong Chinese children. Methods Territory-wide longitudinal data of 48,558 children (girls: 50.0%; 6.3 ± 0.51 years) studying Primary 1 in the academic cohorts of 1995/96 and 1996/97 followed till Primary 6 were obtained from the Student Health Service of Hong Kong. Weight was annually measured and categorized as underweight/normal and overweight/obese and self-esteem was measured in Primary 6. Distinct trajectories of weight status were first identified using growth mixture modeling and their associations with low self-esteem were assessed by logistic regression. Results Four distinct overweight/obesity trajectories were identified: never (76.8%), late-onset (8.1%), early-onset (4.2%) and chronic (10.9%) overweight/obesity. Compared with children who were never overweight/obese, more of those in the late-onset or chronic overweight/obesity group showed low self-esteem and specific domains including general, social and academic/school-related (adjusted odds ratios: 1.20 - 1.43, all P < 0.001) except parent/home-related self-esteem (P = 0.36), whereas children being in the early-onset overweight/obesity group showed no significant difference (P ≥ 0.53) except a lower risk of low social self-esteem (adjusted odds ratio = 0.82, P = 0.03). Conclusions Late-onset or chronic overweight/obesity predicted low general, social and academic/school-related self-esteem. Children who successfully reduced weight may have equal levels of self-esteem or even better social self-esteem than those being always underweight/normal weight. Overweight/obese children had a vulnerability to self-esteem in non-domestic environments.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) exists in various forms including physical, psychological, sexual, and economic. Although abundant literature documented the association between physical, psychological, or sexual violence with the associated mental well-being outcomes on survivors, the literature on economic violence, and its consequences were insufficient. In the past, most of the literature captured economic abuse within the scope of psychological abuse. However, different from psychological abuse, survivors of economic abuse may directly suffer from deteriorating economic well-being. Therefore, there is a need to explicitly investigate economic abuse. This paper aims to critically appraise and summarize the instruments of economic abuse and the associated mental well-being outcomes on women. This study highlights the lack of vigorous study in the area and also an underreporting of the negative impact of economic abuse. The implications and future research directions are discussed.

This study aimed to establish the normative values for the 12-item Short Form Health Survey version 2 (SF-12v2) and examine demographic differences among Hong Kong Chinese adolescents.A total of 28,981 Hong Kong Chinese adolescents aged 12-18 participated in a school-based survey in 2006-2007. Sex- and age-specific SF-12v2 scores were obtained. Ordinal logistic regression models and linear regression models were used to examine the demographic differences for the eight subscales including physical functioning, role physical, bodily pain, general health, vitality, social functioning, role emotional and mental health, and two component summary scores of Physical Component Summary and Mental Component Summary.The mean (standard deviation) Physical Component Summary score was 50.28 (6.82) for boys and 49.37 (6.47) for girls. The corresponding Mental Component Summary score was 45.86 (9.86) for boys and 44.77 (9.56) for girls. Ceiling effects were observed in some of the eight subscales but not the two component summary scores. Ordinal logistic regression showed that girls had significantly lower scores than boys in most subscales including physical functioning with odds ratio (95% confidence interval) of 0.89 (0.84-0.93); role physical, 0.94 (0.90-0.98); bodily pain, 0.76 (0.73-0.80); general health, 0.55 (0.53-0.57); vitality, 0.72 (0.69-0.75); role emotional, 0.78 (0.74-0.81); and mental health, 0.91 (0.88-0.95). In general, older and non-local-born adolescents had lower component summary scores than their peers.This study has provided norms and identified demographic differences of the Chinese SF-12v2.

Aim: To correlate liver stiffness with demographical factors and routine liver biochemistry and to assess the predictive value of these as potential markers of fibrosis.Transient elastography was performed in 1268 chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients. According to a previous validated study for CHB, liver stiffness of8.1 and10.3 kPa were used as cut-off values for defining severe fibrosis and cirrhosis respectively.Liver stiffness correlated positively with bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), globulin, alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) and HBV DNA levels and negatively with albumin and platelet levels (P0.05 for all correlations). From 13 parameters (age, sex, platelet, AST, ALT, GGT, AFP, albumin, globulin, bilirubin, ALP, HBV DNA and hepatitis B e-antigen), four best parameters (AST, platelet, GGT and AFP) were used to derive a liver stiffness model. Using log (index)=1.44+0.1490(GGT)+0.3308 log (AST)-0.5846 log (platelets)+0.1148 log (AFP+1) to predict both severe fibrosis and cirrhosis had area under the receiver operating characteristics curve of 0.85.Routine liver biochemistry correlated well with liver stiffness in Asian CHB patients. A model using simple serum markers can predict liver stiffness, and further studies are required to validate the usefulness of these simple tests as non-invasive markers of fibrosis in CHB.

Different prevalences of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) have been reported in different populations of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Chinese are generally believed to have lower risk of vascular thrombosis. We examined the prevalence of aPL including lupus anticoagulant (LAC), anticardiolipin (aCL) and anti-beta2-glycoprotein I (anti-beta2-GPI) antibodies, the level of thrombotic risk, and the association of aPL with thrombotic and pregnancy outcomes in a Chinese cohort with SLE at the university lupus clinic during the period 1986-2003.aPL were measured in 272 SLE patients, and medical records were reviewed for vascular thrombosis and pregnancy outcomes.The prevalence of LAC, IgG aCL, and IgG anti-beta2-GPI antibodies was 22.4%, 29.0%, and 7.7%, respectively. There were 38 episodes of thrombosis after a mean duration of followup of 11.0 +/- 6.8 SD years, giving a thrombotic rate of 1.26/100 patient-years. All aPL were shown to be associated with vascular thrombosis. IgG anti-beta2-GPI antibodies were found to be associated with recurrent thrombosis [8.0/100 patient-years or 25.0% (7/28)]. Patients taking hydroxychloroquine were found to have fewer thrombotic complications than those who were not (OR 0.17, 95% CI 0.07-0.44; p0.0001). LAC was the strongest factor associated with recurrent miscarriages [relative risk 12.3, 95% CI 1.22-123.31; p = 0.03). The diagnosis of secondary antiphospholipid syndrome was satisfied in 8.9% of patients.The lifetime and recurrent thrombotic rates in our patients with aPL were not particularly different from those in the literature. However, the lower prevalence of aPL in our cohort may suggest a role of other prothrombotic factors in predisposition to thrombosis.

ContextAlthough chronic Helicobacter pylori infection is associated with gastric cancer, the effect of H pylori treatment on prevention of gastric cancer development in chronic carriers is unknown.ObjectiveTo determine whether treatment of H pylori infection reduces the incidence of gastric cancer.Design, Setting, and ParticipantsProspective, randomized, placebo-controlled, population-based primary prevention study of 1630 healthy carriers of H pylori infection from Fujian Province, China, recruited in July 1994 and followed up until January 2002. A total of 988 participants did not have precancerous lesions (gastric atrophy, intestinal metaplasia, or gastric dysplasia) on study entry.InterventionPatients were randomly assigned to receive H pylori eradication treatment: a 2-week course of omeprazole, 20 mg, a combination product of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium, 750 mg, and metronidazole, 400 mg, all twice daily (n = 817); or placebo (n = 813).Main Outcome MeasuresThe primary outcome measure was incidence of gastric cancer during follow-up, compared between H pylori eradication and placebo groups. The secondary outcome measure was incidence of gastric cancer in patients with or without precancerous lesions, compared between the 2 groups.ResultsAmong the 18 new cases of gastric cancers that developed, no overall reduction was observed in participants who received H pylori eradication treatment (n = 7) compared with those who did not (n = 11) (P = .33). In a subgroup of patients with no precancerous lesions on presentation, no patient developed gastric cancer during a follow-up of 7.5 years after H pylori eradication treatment compared with those who received placebo (0 vs 6; P = .02).
