Hyperspectral imagery (HSI) has shown promising results in real-world applications. However, the technological evolution of optical sensors poses two main challenges in HSI classification: 1) the spectral band is usually redundant and noisy and 2) HSI with millions of pixels has become increasingly common in real-world applications. Motivated by the recent success of hybrid huberized support vector machines (HHSVMs), which inherit the benefits of both lasso and ridge regression, this paper first investigates the advantages of HHSVM for HSI applications. Unfortunately, the existing HHSVM solvers suffer from prohibitive computational costs on large-scale data sets. To solve this problem, this paper proposes simple and effective stochastic HHSVM algorithms for HSI classification. In the stochastic settings, we show that with a probability of at least $1-\varrho $ , our algorithms find an $\epsilon $ -accurate solution using $\tilde {O}({1}/{\lambda _{2}\epsilon })$ iterations. Since the convergence rate of our algorithms does not depend on the size of the training set, our algorithms are suitable for handling large-scale problems. We demonstrate the superiority of our algorithms by conducting experiments on large-scale binary and multiclass classification problems, comparing to the state-of-the-art HHSVM solvers. In power electronic applications, due to switching components, the inverter dc-bus generates current pulses at low frequencies and high frequencies (HFs). Usually, a dc-bus capacitor is sized to absorb the current peaks at the switching frequency and to stabilize the dc voltage. For decoupling the HF harmonics, an additional capacitor is required. This decoupling capacitor needs to have a low impedance over a wide range of frequencies. However, their performances for the HF range are highly limited by their stray inductance. In order to minimize the need for an additional decoupling capacitor at HFs, this paper proposes to improve the connections of the dc bus capacitor. Busbar configuration and printed circuit board allow reducing parasitics of the cabling. Several types of interconnections are proposed and characterized in this paper. Both two-terminal and four-terminal capacitors are evaluated and compared regarding operating frequency ranges. This paper deals with equivalent 2-D finite-element (FE) models of permanent magnet lead screw (PMLS), to accurately predict the thrust force. Due to the helical-shape permanent magnets (PMs), the magnetic fields of PMLS are typically 3-D and non-symmetric. However, the PMLS is approximately symmetric in some cases and an equivalent 2-D axis-symmetric FE model is developed instead of 3-D models. The problem lies in that no evaluation about the accuracy and applicability of the 2-D axis-symmetric FE model was offered in previous literature. In this paper, the 2-D axis-symmetric FE model is derived based on the concept of equivalent current sheets of PMs. The limitations of the existing 2-D axis-symmetric FE model are clarified, and a novel equivalent 2-D torque FE model is then proposed to predict thrust force with the gear ratio when the 2-D axis-symmetric FE model is not appropriate. It is shown that the choice of equivalent 2-D FE model depends on the lead angle of PMLS, 2-D axis-symmetric FE model is applicable in the range of (0°, 15°), and 2-D torque FE model is preferred in the range of (65°, 90°). The fastening bolt is one of the important parts of the stacked structure proton exchange membrane electrolyzer (PEMEC), and the bolt tightening behavior has a significant impact on the electrochemical performance of the PEMEC. In this paper, we use a transparent visualization system to explore the effect of tightening bolt behavior on the performance of PEMEC. Pressure sensitive paper was used to record the contact pressure distribution map of PEMEC under different bolt tightening methods, and a high-speed camera was used to record the state of gas-liquid two-phase flow inside PEMEC under different bolt tightening methods. Both of them are used to verify the effect of bolt tightening behavior on the performance of PEMEC. The experimental results show that the contact pressure of PEMEC increases with the increase of bolt torque, and the electrochemical performance first increases and then decreases with the increase of bolt torque. The optimum bolt torque is 3.5 N m for a square PEMEC with an end plate size of 100 mm × 100 mm and a membrane size of 50 mm × 50 mm × 0.17 mm. The PEMEC performance increases with the increase of bolt tightening steps, and the optimal tightening step for the system is three steps. In addition, symmetrical tightening of bolts is beneficial for improving electrochemical performance, and there is an optimal tightening sequence in the system. This paper illustrates the relationship between tightened bolts and PEMEC electrochemical performance, showing the relationship between bolt tightening and the gas-liquid two-phase flow state inside PEMEC. The rail fastener is an indispensable component used to connect the rail and sleepers in the track structure. Real‐time recognition of the fastener defects plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and stable operation of rail transit. In this paper, an intelligent and innovative method is proposed to detect the fastener defects including the invisible defects appearing as bolt loosening and the visible defects such as the worn or completely missing fasteners by using axle‐box vibration acceleration and deep learning network. First, the dynamical relation between the fastener defects and the axle‐box vibration acceleration is investigated by using the first principle and the vehicle–track dynamical model. Then a defects recognition network is built based on the deep convolution neural network for track fasteners by using the frequency spectrum images of the axle‐box vibration. The results show that the proposed method achieves a classification accuracy of 98.27%. Finally, the track section where the fasteners are most likely to be damaged is investigated, and rail corrugation is found to be a key factor that causes fastener fatigue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the remarkable recent progress on learning deep generative models, it becomes increasingly interesting to develop models for controllable image synthesis from reconfigurable structured inputs. This paper focuses on a recently emerged task, layout-to-image, whose goal is to learn generative models for synthesizing photo-realistic images from a spatial layout (i.e., object bounding boxes configured in an image lattice) and its style codes (i.e., structural and appearance variations encoded by latent vectors). This paper first proposes an intuitive paradigm for the task, layout-to-mask-to-image, which learns to unfold object masks in a weakly-supervised way based on an input layout and object style codes. The layout-to-mask component deeply interacts with layers in the generator network to bridge the gap between an input layout and synthesized images. Then, this paper presents a method built on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for the proposed layout-to-mask-to-image synthesis with layout and style control at both image and object levels. The controllability is realized by a proposed novel Instance-Sensitive and Layout-Aware Normalization (ISLA-Norm) scheme. A layout semi-supervised version of the proposed method is further developed without sacrificing performance. The paper demonstrates the capability of the developed phase transformation model to design the cooling conditions in the Stelmor process allowing for obtaining different types of microstructures in wire rod of 32CrB4 steel. The model based on modified JMAK equation was developed using the results of the tests conducted in a DIL 805 A/D/T dilatometer. The model is composed of sub-models of ferritic, pearlitic, bainitic and martensitic transformations. Its predictive capability was confirmed in industrial conditions by performing trials with different settings of fans involved in the cooling process on the Stelmor line of CMC Poland. Excellent performance of the model was achieved through the modification of commonly used equations which allows accurate predictions of the phase transformations start and finish temperatures, as well as volume fraction of microstructural constituents, in a wide range of cooling rates. It was demonstrated that the model can effectively be applied to design the cooling conditions in the Stelmor process, which will result in the required microstructural composition of the wire rod. For global template matching (GTM), which is commonly used in the positioning of rail fasteners, only the fastener template is used to search the global image in both two dimensions, which will result in errors in two dimensions, and the lower positioning accuracy will be caused. A positioning method for rail fasteners based on double template matching (DTM) is proposed in this paper, in which the double template contains the rail template and the fastener template. First, the rail template is used to scan the original image in horizontal dimension, and the squared Euclidean distance (SED) is used to obtain the rail positioning in the original image. Combining with the prior knowledge of the fastener template image, the image composed of the rail and the fastener can be obtained, which is called the Rail Area Map (RAM) in this paper. Then, after preprocessing the RAM and the fastener template image, the fastener template image is used to scan the RAM in vertical dimension, and the normalized correlation coefficient (NCC) is used to calculate the similarity between the template and the subgraph of the RAM to achieve precise positioning of the fastener. The proposed DTM method adopts a positioning strategy from coarse to fine, and two templates are used to complete different positioning tasks in their own dimension, respectively. Due to the rail can be precise positioned in horizontal dimension, the error of the fastener positioning in the horizontal dimension can be avoided, and thus, the positioning accuracy can be improved. In order to break through low sensitivity limitation of the existing fiber Bragg grating (FBG) acceleration sensor, a new high sensitivity FBG acceleration sensor based on rigid hinge is proposed. The working principle innovation is that the sensor uses the rigid body rotation motion instead of the existing elastic deformation. The novel structure is that the pendulum rotates around the rigid hinge and the structure is symmetrically designed, which increases the elongation of the fiber grating by twice. The resonance frequency and sensitivity formula of FBG acceleration sensor is theoretically obtained by analysis. The influence of size parameters of the structure on sensor sensitivity and resonance frequency is further analyzed by MATLAB, and finally the structural parameters are optimized. On the basis, the first-order natural frequency of the sensor is simulated by ANSYS Workbench17.0. Experimental studies show that the natural frequency of the acceleration sensor designed in this paper is 39 Hz, the sensitivity of the sensor is 949.2 pm/g at 15 Hz, and the cross-interference is less than 6.49%, which is suitable for precision measurement under low frequency micro-vibration. The catenary support device inspection is of crucial importance for ensuring safety and reliability of railway systems. At present, visual detection tasks of catenary support devices defect are performed by trained personnel based on the images taken periodically by industrial cameras installed on inspection vehicle in a limited period of time at midnight. However, the inspection mean is inappropriate for low efficiency and high cost. This paper presents a novel network based on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images for catenary support device inspection and focuses on small object detection and the imbalanced dataset. With regards to the first aspect, based on a pyramid network structure, the improved Faster R-CNN consists of a top-down-top feature pyramid fusion structure, which heavily fuses high-level semantic information and low-level detail information. The feature map fusions of three different pooling scales are employed for improving detection accuracy of predicted bounding boxes. With regards to the second, we copy and paste the small proportion objects of dataset for avoiding category imbalance. Finally, quantitative and qualitative evaluations illustrate that the improved Faster-RCNN achieves better performance over the classic methods, yet remains convenient and efficient. Fasteners are an important part of railway security. The application of computer vision and image processing on fastener detection has become a research hot spot. However, most of the researches have focused on the missing and damage detection of fasteners up to now. In this paper, a method based on image processing is proposed to locate the center of the hexagon nut in the railway fastener. The precise position of the hexagon nut can be used for the automatic replacement of the nut, which is of great significance for the automatic railway construction and maintenance. The locating method proposed in this paper can be divided into two steps. First, the improved Canny detector which combines surrounding suppression and iterative excitation is used to extract the contours of the fastener. Then, a multifeature hierarchical locating (MHL) algorithm is proposed, which integrates the circle contour of the gasket and the hexagon features of the nut. The experimental results show that the improved Canny detector suppresses noises effectively and highlights the contours of fastener. The objective of this paper is to advance the state of the art of aggressive space mapping (ASM) by demonstrating how, for resonant structures, and microwave filters in particular, an ASM-based optimization procedure may converge to the desired target performance in just one step. This behavior is first justified in physical terms, using the electromagnetic cavity perturbation theory, and is then investigated numerically. This paper presents a novel structure-controlled variable stiffness robotic gripper that enables adaptive gripping of soft and rigid objects with a wide range of compliance. With the structure-controllable principle, the stiffness is controlled by the mechanical structure configurations rather than by material properties or electronic means. The principle is realized by changing the effective second moment of area of the gripper finger through rotating a built-in flexure hinge shaft. Based on this principle, the states of the stiffness can be continuously, instead of discretely, studied and assessed over the intermediate states from compliant to almost completely rigid. A variable stiffness mechanism has been developed to demonstrate the validity of the proposed principle. It enables that the finger stiffness and gripping position are independently controlled. With the introduction of flexure hinges, the undesired lateral buckling resulted from the rotation of a normal leaf spring is eliminated. In addition, a two-finger parallel gripper with this variable stiffness mechanism is developed which can provide the grasping stiffness according to the grasping task requirements. The effectiveness of the gripper has been demonstrated to handle the objects range from light, fragile to heavy, rigid without using any feedback loop or soft pads. Note to Practitioners—This work was inspired by the fact that the capability of variable stiffness in the robot actuator can reduce the undesired impacts to the robot arms. It can also allow a safer interaction between robot and human. Gripping of objects with uncertainties in shapes and position, as well as large variations in fragility and weight can also benefit from the concept of the variable stiffness. However, existing designs of variable stiffness grippers either have limited stiffness range or bulky configurations. They compromised the practical applications. This paper introduces a design in that a rotating flexure hinge shaft is embedded inside the robotic gripper finger. The mechanical stiffness of such fingers can be varied by changing the rotation angle of the flexure hinges. We present the working principle supported by mathematical models in the design and development. We also show an example design of a two-finger parallel gripper equipped with the VSFs. Extensive experiments demonstrated that the gripper is effective in gripping objects with wide range of uncertainties. Such gripper design avoids the use of soft pads as well as closed-loop control and high-precision sensors. In the future work, we shall implement such grippers for actual industrial applications. The aim of this paper is to gain insight into the nonlinear vibration feature of a dynamic model of a gas turbine. First, a rod fastening rotor-bearing coupling model with fixed-point rubbing is proposed, where the fractal theory and the finite element method are utilized. For contact analysis, a novel contact force model is introduced in this paper. Meanwhile, the Coulomb model is adopted to expound the friction characteristics. Second, the governing equations of motion of the rotor system are numerically solved, and the nonlinear dynamic characteristics are analyzed in terms of the bifurcation diagram, Poincaré map, and time history. Third, the potential effects provided by contact degree of joint interface, distribution position, and amount of contact layer are discussed in detail. Purpose: A nut bolt joint is a primary device that connects mechanical components. The vibrations cause bolted joints to self-loosen. Created by motors and engines, leading to machine failure, and there may be severe safety issues. All the safety issues and self-loosen are directly and indirectly the functions of the accuracy and precision of the fabricated nut and bolt. Recent advancements in three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies now allow for the production of intricate components. These may be used technologies such as 3D printed bolts to create fasteners. This paper aims to investigate dimensional precision, surface properties, mechanical properties and scanning electron microscope (SEM) of the component fabricated using a multi-jet 3D printer. Design/methodology/approach: Multi-jet-based 3D printed nut-bolt is evaluated in this paper. More specifically, liquid polymer-based nut-bolt is fabricated in sections 1, 2 and 3 of the base plate. Five nuts and bolts are fabricated in these three sections. Findings: Dimensional inquiry (bolt dimension, general dimensions' density and surface roughness) and mechanical testing (shear strength of nut and bolt) were carried out throughout the study. According to the ISO 2768 requirements for the General Tolerances Grade, the nut and bolt's dimensional examination (variation in bolt dimension, general dimensions) is within the tolerance grades. As a result, the multi-jet 3D printing (MJP)-based 3D printer described above may be used for commercial production. In terms of mechanical qualities, when the component placement moves from Sections 1 to 3, the density of the manufactured part decreases by 0.292% (percent) and the shear strength of the nut and bolt decreases by 30%. According to the SEM examination, the density of the River markings, sharp edges, holes and sharp edges increased from Sections 1 to 3, which supports the findings mentioned above. Originality/value: Hence, this work enlightens the aspects causing time lag during the 3D printing in MJP. Currently, research on on-board real-time quantitative detection of rail fasteners is few. Therefore, this paper proposes and validates an improved YOLOv8 based method for quantitative detection of rail fasteners, leveraging the capabilities of edge miniaturized artificial intelligence (AI) computing devices. First, the lightweight MobileNetV3 is employed as the backbone network for our model to increase detection speed, and the SA attention mechanism is integrated at the end of the backbone network to enhance the feature of the fasteners. Then the deformable convolution is introduced to reconstruct the bottleneck structure of the neck network, which can segment fasteners without compromising accuracy. Subsequently, the optimized network model is utilized on a Jetson AGX Xavier edge AI computing device by the TensorRT acceleration method. Segmentation results are then extracted at the pixel level for quantitative analysis of fastener breakage degree and deflection angle, so as to correct the detection results. Experimental results show that the size of the improved lightweight network volume is reduced by 28% compared to the original YOLOv8 model, and the frame rate on the edge AI computing device is lifted by 71.87%, i.e., 55 f/s. Furthermore, the model is refined based on quantitative analysis results, resulting in an mAP0.5 of 97.0%, and real-time quantitative detection of rail fasteners is realized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To make disassembly cost-efficient, one-to-many fasteners are needed. These so-called active fasteners use advanced materials or structures as a catalyst for disassembly, allowing multiple assemblies to separate simultaneously after exposure to specific external triggering conditions. Using topology optimization this paper explores the alternative configurations of pressure-based active fasteners. The optimization problem is first solved in the 2D space for a snap-fit like design. Based on these results the problem was extended to 3D and solved. Similar as for the 2D results, a detailed finite element verification was conducted which proved the optimized structure shows an increase of the disassembly efficiency with 200-250% compared to the initial non-optimized structure measured in displacement of the snapping features. As such, this paper shows that for future manufacturing businesses, active fasteners promise to be a valid alternative for shredding. Since the model can easily be modified for other trigger conditions or design configurations, the proposed approach proves to be suitable to develop different types of one-to-many disassembly fasteners. Purpose: This paper aims to study the influences of eccentricity on the fastener load and bearing strength of the eccentric connection in the aircraft structure. Design/methodology/approach: The special experiment is designed for the researches. The fastener loads of the eccentric connection are gained by using the derived formulas and numerical analysis, and the fastener load rules is verified by the experiment. The bearing strength of the eccentric connection is investigated by the experiments under different eccentricities compared with that gained from the experiment. Findings: The study results are summarized as follows. Magnitude of the fastener load in the eccentric connection is greatly affected by distance from the fastener to the centroid of the fastener cluster and that from the fastener to the concentrated load. With the increase of eccentricity of the homolateral concentrated load, the fastener load increases, and difference of the fastener loads becomes larger, forming the short plate effect of the bucket. It means that fastener with the maximum load (the shortest plate of the bucket) leads to decrease of the bearing strength of the eccentric connection (the capacity of the bucket). Originality/value: The investigation on the influence of eccentricity on the bearing strength of eccentric connection is firstly presented. The vector expression of the fastener load in eccentric connection is firstly derived. And the influencing mechanism of the fastener load on the bearing strengths of the different eccentric connections is demonstrated. In recent years, attention has been driven to the direct fastening technology by use of power actuated nail‐type fasteners (PAFs) set in concrete. By means of the series of tests shown in this paper and the high‐speed measuring equipment used, a first approach to the possibility of evaluating the setting performance is demonstrated. The difficulty is to judge whether the operation was successful and whether the fastening can bear the required force, since it is not possible to look into the concrete. For example, it remains hidden whether and, if so, how much the nail was deflected and bent by the concrete. Furthermore, it is unknown how the surrounding concrete was affected by occurring strains and heating as a result of friction. Since the setting process is very fast, it is necessary to use high‐speed measurement technology. In the case of the studies conducted, both digital image correlation (DIC) and thermography were used to record material responses. Following the setting process, the nails and the surrounding concrete were separated and examined with computer tomography (CT). This concept paper discusses the effects of the installation condition of fasteners on the life‐cycle performance of noise barriers. Noise barriers that are erected along high‐speed railway lines are loaded by aerodynamic pressure and suction waves due to the passing trains. As an integral part of railway infrastructures their level of safety must be maintained throughout their entire lifetime. On basis of this concept and study, a potential monitoring‐based approach for the assessment of the life‐cycle performance of NBs is briefly introduced. That monitoring‐based approach finds its place in a holistic four‐stage assessment framework, in other words a progressive four‐stage model in which the information content increases with each model stage and thus successively increases the accuracy of the determined structural conditions at the time of observation and the prediction for the remaining service life of the structure. The objectives of this paper should bring relevant insights for the whole holistic four‐stage model. Depending on how far the degradation of the considered noise barrier has already progressed, the corresponding stage of the holistic assessment concept is activated, which enable infrastructure managers to plan their future investments regarding maintenance, retrofit or rebuilt of noise barriers more economically. Recent research showed that the damage in non‐structural components significantly affects the seismic behaviour of structures, indeed it is crucial to evaluate the seismic behaviour of non‐structural components. For this purpose, the University of Naples "Federico II" started a cooperation with the Hilti Corporation, to evaluate the seismic demand on fasteners connecting drywalls to supporting elements. In particular, the seismic displacement demand on Power Actuated Fasteners (PAF) was obtained through quasi‐static in‐plane cyclic tests on full‐scale drywall partitions. Test specimens consisted of 2285 mm long and 2600 mm high partition walls and in total seven tests were carried‐out at the Lab of the Department of Structures for Engineering and Architecture. A specific test set‐up was developed for the experimental tests and the optimal instrumentation layout was studied to allow to capture the significant measurements on PAFs. A FEMA 461 protocol was employed for all the tests. The paper summarizes the experimental program, describing wall configurations, test set‐up, loading protocol and instrumentation layout. This paper introduces a methodology to identify missing fasteners in railroad tracks using laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) measurements recorded from a moving rail car. In order to investigate the effects of missing fasteners on the rail's dynamic response, three approaches are adopted: (i) rail vibration tests, (ii) modal analysis, and (iii) simulated moving measurements. Next, a missing fastener detection algorithm was introduced based on the frequency range of interest and the feature identified in those approaches. The proposed methodology is validated through field tests conducted on the railway track at the Transportation Technology Center (TTC) in Pueblo, CO, with two different speeds at 32 km/h (20 mph) and 48 km/h (30 mph). During the operation of drilling rigs, bolts are subjected to significant loads, rendering bolt groups vulnerable to failure due to uneven load distribution. This study investigates the multi-bolt load distribution characteristics of eight-gear and four-gear symmetric transmission mechanisms in drilling rigs. The spring stiffness method is utilized to analyze multi-bolt load distribution. A finite element model of the bolted connection is developed by integrating the structural shape and transmission mechanism. The model's accuracy is validated through a rack strain test under various loads. Based on the finite element analysis results, this study proposes an evaluation method for bolted connections using relative deformation difference. The impacts of bolt pitch, end distance, preload, and thickness of the derrick connection plate under different load positions on the connection are examined. In order to study the vibration control effects of floating rail fasteners on the metro depot and its over-track buildings, a metro depot and its over-track buildings are selected for field test and the track-stratum-operation depot-platform coupling finite element calculation model is established and verified by the measured vibration response data. The track-stratum-operation depot-platform-buildings coupling large-scale dynamic finite element analysis model is established based on the extension of the former, and the reaction forces of ordinary fasteners and floating rail fasteners are input into the model respectively to solve the vibration responses of the over-track buildings and analyze the insertion loss of vibration level varying with frequency and maximum Z vibration level in order that the effects of floating rail fasteners on the vibration control of the over-track buildings are evaluated. The research shows that for the building forms studied in this paper, the significant vibration frequency of building floor is 31. 5 Hz when the vibration propagates to the over-track buildings through the depot and the over-track platform. The floating rail fastener has few obvious effects on vibration control at the vibration significant frequency 31. 5 Hz of this over-track buildings, mainly because its stable vibration reduction frequency band occurs above 31.5 Hz. The control effects are optimal near 63 Hz, and the maximum vibration reduction of 15 dB can be achieved. With the floating rail fasteners, the maximum Z vibration level of the over-track building floor generally decreases by 2-5 dB. The research results of this paper can provide reference and basis for the selection and design of damping track for the vibration control of the depot and over-track buildings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
