In this paper, a face recognition fusion algorithm, namely WT-LLE-LSSVM, based on wavelet transform (WT) and local linear embedding (LLE) is proposed. Firstly, the face image is pre-processed, and decomposed by Wavelet Transform to obtain four components of face image; then, the LLE algorithm is carried out to extract the features from the four components respectively, and the weighted fusion is used to obtain the face recognition feature vector; Finally, least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) is conducted to learn the training samples with feature vector reduction, and the classifier of face recognition is established. In the case of different pixels, three face databases are chosen to test some main performance indexes such as recognition rate, speed and time of the algorithm. The simulation results show that compared with the traditional face recognition algorithm, the proposed algorithm can improve the face recognition rate, as well as the computing rate, and enhance the efficiency of face recognition. Manifold learning algorithms mainly focus on discovering the intrinsic low-dimensional manifold embedded in the high-dimensional Euclidean space. Among them, locally linear embedding (LLE) is one of the most promising dimensionality reduction methods. Though LLE holds local neighborhood information, it doesn't fully take the label information and the global structure information into account for classification tasks. To enhance classification performance, this paper proposes a novel dimensionality reduction method for face recognition, termed embedded manifold-based kernel Fisher discriminant analysis, or EMKFDA for short. The goal of EMKFDA is to emphasize the local geometry structure of the data while utilizing the global discriminative structure obtained from linear discriminant analysis, which can maximize the between-class scatter and minimize the within-class scatter. In addition, by optimizing an objective function in a kernel feature space, nonlinear features can be extracted. Thus, EMKFDA, which combines manifold criterion and Fisher criterion, has better discrimination, and is more suitable for recognition tasks. Experiments on the ORL, Yale, and FERET face databases show the impressive performance of the proposed method. Recently, a large family of supervised or unsupervised manifold learning algorithms that stem from statistical or geometrical theory has been designed to solve the problem of pattern classification. In this study, consider the fact that the data are usually sampled from a low‐dimensional manifold space which resides in a high‐dimensional Euclidean space, the authors propose a novel two‐graph‐based supervised linear classification algorithm called neighbourhood sensitive preserving embedding (NSPE). Different from local linear embedding (LLE) (or neighbourhood preserving embedding (NPE)) which preserves the local neighbourhood structure with one graph, NSPE can discover both the intrinsic and discriminant structure of the data manifold by constructing two graphs, that is, the within‐class graph and the between‐class graph. Thus, the data are mapped into a subspace where the nearby points with the same label are close to each other, whereas the nearby points with different labels are far apart. As a classification method, besides being defined on training samples, NSPE is also defined on testing samples. Experiments carried on the real‐world face databases demonstrate that the results of all two‐graph‐based spectral methods are comparable and better than that of one‐graph‐based methods. Abstract: Neighborhood preserving embedding (NPE) is a linear approximation to the locally linear embedding algorithm which can preserve the local neighborhood structure on the data manifold. However, in typical face recognition where the number of data samples is smaller than the dimension of data space, it is difficult to directly apply NPE to high dimensional matrices because of computational complexity. Moreover, in such case, NPE often suffers from the singularity problem of eigenmatrix, which makes the direct implementation of the NPE algorithm almost impossible. In practice, principal component analysis or singular value decomposition is applied as a preprocessing step to attack these problems. Nevertheless, this strategy may discard dimensions that contain important discriminative information and the eigensystem computation of NPE could be unstable. Towards a practical dimensionality reduction method for face data, we develop a new scheme in this paper, namely, the complete neighborhood preserving embedding (CNPE). CNPE transforms the singular generalized eigensystem computation of NPE into two eigenvalue decomposition problems. Moreover, a feasible and effective procedure is proposed to alleviate the computational burden of high dimensional matrix for typical face image data. Experimental results on the ORL face database and the Yale face database show that the proposed CNPE algorithm achieves better performance than other feature extraction methods, such as Eigenfaces, Fisherfaces and NPE, etc. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Subspace manifold learning represents a popular class of techniques in statistical image analysis and object recognition. Recent research in the field has focused on nonlinear representations; locally linear embedding (LLE) is one such technique that has recently gained popularity. We present and apply a generalization of LLE that introduces sample weights. We demonstrate the application of the technique to face recognition, where a model exists to describe each face’s probability of occurrence. These probabilities are used as weights in the learning of the low-dimensional face manifold. Results of face recognition using this approach are compared against standard nonweighted LLE and PCA. A significant improvement in recognition rates is realized using weighted LLE on a data set where face occurrences follow the modeled distribution. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In this paper an efficient feature extraction method named as locally linear discriminant embedding (LLDE) is proposed for face recognition. It is well known that a point can be linearly reconstructed by its neighbors and the reconstruction weights are under the sum-to-one constraint in the classical locally linear embedding (LLE). So the constrained weights obey an important symmetry: for any particular data point, they are invariant to rotations, rescalings and translations. The latter two are introduced to the proposed method to strengthen the classification ability of the original LLE. The data with different class labels are translated by the corresponding vectors and those belonging to the same class are translated by the same vector. In order to cluster the data with the same label closer, they are also rescaled to some extent. So after translation and rescaling, the discriminability of the data will be improved significantly. The proposed method is compared with some related feature extraction methods such as maximum margin criterion (MMC), as well as other supervised manifold learning-based approaches, for example ensemble unified LLE and linear discriminant analysis (En-ULLELDA), locally linear discriminant analysis (LLDA). Experimental results on Yale and CMU PIE face databases convince us that the proposed method provides a better representation of the class information and obtains much higher recognition accuracies. Locally linear embedding (LLE) is a nonlinear dimensionality reduction method proposed recently. It can reveal the intrinsic distribution of data, which cannot be provided by classical linear dimensionality reduction methods. The application of LLE, however, is limited because of its lack of a parametric mapping between the observation and the low-dimensional output. And the large data set to be reduced is necessary. In this paper, we propose methods to establish the process of mapping from low-dimensional embedded space to high-dimensional space for LLE and validate their efficiency with the application of reconstruction of multi-pose face images. Furthermore, we propose that the high-dimensional structure of multi-pose face images is similar for the same kind of pose change mode of different persons. So given the structure information of data distribution which is obtained by leaning large numbers of multi-pose images in a training set, the support vector regression (SVR) method of statistical learning theory is used to learn the high-dimensional structure of someone based on small sets. The detailed learning method and algorithm are given and applied to reconstruct and synthesize face images in small set cases. The experiments prove that our idea and method is correct.
