The article focuses on news related to political issues at international level. For a long while scholar Jonah Barrington's recollections of the humors of Irish dueling and faction-fighting in his youth, at the close of the last century, were considered the best reading of their kind in English literature. But of late the Southerners have been far outdoing the Irish in this department of human comedy. Shipping subsidies in the U.S. came to an end in 1875, when Congress, by an almost unanimous vote, rescinded the contracts with the Pacific Mail Company, on the ground of fraud, but it is proposed to bring it back.
