1. An EV SRM Drive and Its Interconnected Operations Integrated into Grid, Microgrid, and Vehicle.

Abstract

This paper presents an electric vehicle (EV) switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive with incorporated operation capabilities integrated into the utility grid, the microgrid, and another EV. The motor drive DC-link voltage is established from the battery through an interleaved boost/buck converter with fault tolerance. The varied DC-link voltage can improve driving performance and reduce battery energy consumption over a wide speed range. Through a well-designed current control scheme, speed control scheme, and dynamic commutation tuning scheme, the established SRM drive possesses good performance in the motor driving mode. During deceleration, the regenerative braking energy can be effectively recovered to the battery. When the EV is in idle mode, the grid-to-vehicle (G2V) charging operation can be conducted through the bidirectional switch mode rectifier (SMR) and CLLC resonant converter. Satisfactory charging performance with good line drawn power quality and galvanic isolation is preserved. Conversely, the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) discharging operation can be performed. The EV can make movable energy storage device applications. Finally, the interconnected operations of the developed EV SRM drive to vehicle and microgrid are presented. Through vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) operation, it can supply energy to the nearby EV when the battery is exhausted and needs roadside assistance. In addition, microgrid-to-vehicle (M2V) and vehicle-to-microgrid (V2M) operations can also be conductible. The EV battery can be charged from the microgrid. 3. Analysis and Projections of BEVs, Renewable Electricity, and GHG Reductions through 2050

Abstract

This report makes an initial investigation into the potential for combining very high penetration levels of electric vehicles with similarly very high penetration of variable renewable electricity (VRE) in California. A literature review is performed regarding the potential for high levels of EV sales and VRE penetration at both the U.S. and California level. Such scenarios have been developed by a number of researchers, such as U.S. national laboratories for the White House (under the Obama Administration), and by Energy and Environmental Economics, Inc. (E3) for the California Energy Commission. Such studies indicate that both of these “extreme” futures are entirely plausible and have the potential to coexist. However, none of the reviewed studies has undertaken detailed analysis of how large numbers of EVs could interact with and support a VRE-dominated system, and how these might interact in a useful way. This could include grid-to-vehicle (G2V) and vehicle- to-grid (V2G) movement of electricity, with vehicle batteries providing large scale electricity storage.We undertake our own preliminary simulation for a 2030 and 2050 scenario for California, using an 8760 hours (full year) electricity demand profile and VRE generation example. We assume a ramp- up of VRE to 60% of all electricity generation by 2030 and 100% by 2050, with a similar increase in the EV share of new LDV sales, creating a significant stock (about 7 million) by 2030 and nearly complete transition (to over 20 million vehicles) by 2050. Using an “averages, peaks and valleys” analysis on the electric side, and a typical spare battery storage potential on the vehicle side, our simulation shows that by 2030 a large share of excess VRE electricity generation could be stored, and a large share of electricity shortfall from VRE could be provided, by electric vehicle batteries throughout the year, though there would be many cases where they cannot provide full coverage of these situations. However by 2050, if nearly 100% of the fleet were EVs, only about half of their available, spare capacity is needed to store the excess electricity from a full VRE system on the highest generation day and only about 40% would be needed to store and supply the shortage from lack of VRE generation on the highest shortfall day.While these results are encouraging, a deeper simulation is needed to provide a true hour-by-hour assessment of battery use and the incidence of storage need compared to driving need. Management of charging times that could not be assessed here may also play a critical role. In addition, our initial assessment only covers a single day shortfall. Shortfalls could occur for longer periods, particularly if the VRE electricity system were sized to take better advantage of seasonal storage options. Vehicle batteries are best suited to very short duration storage and may not be adequate to keep the electricity reliable for many consecutive days of shortfall. Hydrogen (H2) has the potential to be a longer-term energy storage option and could be stored in fuel cell vehicle tanks (and the H2 system associated with generating, storing and distributing H2 to those tanks). The next stage of our research will involve running a full simulation using our (ITS-Davis) California ZEV power model (“CALZEV”), a version of the larger Message model, applied to consider both electricity and hydrogen (with large numbers of both of these types of vehicles) in order to: 1) gauge the relative storage potential and cost over a range of time frames and VRE scenarios, and 2) estimate the relative value and possible synergies in a system with both types of vehicles and fuels.

International audience; Electric vehicles (EV) are becoming a conventional preference and in coming times they will overtake conventional engines due to their countless advantages over them. the Only challenge is the limitations of battery charging infrastructure availability while traveling. Currently, an open-source charging dock employs a plug-in charging system, where the individual needs to plug in the charging cable to EV and from the charging dock.This unguarded charging dock involves risk factors like inexpertness to manually chose the required mode with personal safety and surrounding conditions, etc. therefore, in this paper, we are introducing an Automatic charging docks system, which involves automatic detection between the V2G and G2V mode of charging so as to counter the errors involve in non-expert handling procedure. This especially enhances the charging infrastructure safety in the plug-in system.Furthermore,the wireless power transfer charging system would be for Electric vehicles without a Plug-in alternative.

Abstract

This paper presents the establishment and operation control of a dc microgrid incorporating with electric vehicle (EV) as movable energy storage. The developed microgrid consists of a wind permanent-magnet synchronous generator ac source and a dc source, a battery/supercapacitor (SC)/flywheel hybrid energy storage system, and a grid-connected bidirectional single-phase three-wire (1P3W) load inverter. Various harvested ac and dc sources can be plugged into the microgrid via the developed interfaced power converters. In addition to good microgrid operation performance, the microgrid-to-grid and grid-to-microgrid operations can be successfully conducted with good power quality. As to the developed EV interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor drive, the SC auxiliary storage is equipped to assist the main battery source in intermittent energy conversion. Satisfactory acceleration/deceleration/reversible and regenerative braking operation characteristics are obtained via the developed power stages and control schemes. Moreover, the successful microgrid-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-microgrid interconnected operations of EV and microgrid are achieved. Abstract

The Dual Active Full Bridge (DAFB) is one of the promising isolated DC/DC converter topologies that will play a significant role in the future integration of Electric Vehicle (EV) into Smart Grids (SGs). This is due to its inherent soft switching, bidirectional energy transfer capability and control simplicity. Thus, this paper provides a brief overview highlighting the advantages of the DAFB compared to other existing topologies in-light of Grid-2-Vehicle (G2V) and Vehicle-2-Grid (V2G) applications. It also emphasizes the implementation and testing of a 6 kW DAFB with Typhoon Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) device. The results show that the HIL implementation validates well the theoretical and simulation results. - 2017 IEEE. Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Engenharia Electrónica Industrial e Computadores (área de especialização em Electrónica de Potência), Os Veículos Elétricos (VEs) são vistos no setor dos transportes como um dos meios mais promissores na luta pela sustentabilidade. Contudo, a integração dos VEs na rede elétrica acarreta novos desafios na gestão desta, principalmente, tendo em conta o carregamento das suas baterias, ou seja, a operação dos VEs no modo Grid-to-Vehicle (G2V). Em contrapartida aos desafios que acarreta a integração destes veículos na rede elétrica, surgem novos conceitos associados ao funcionamento dos VEs equipados com carregadores bidirecionais, que permitem a operação em outros modos, tais como Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) e Vehicle-to-Home (V2H), que integram inúmeras vantagens. Neste sentido, esta dissertação de mestrado integrado teve como finalidade o desenvolvimento de um sistema de carregamento de baterias on-board bidirecional que permita o funcionamento dos VEs como uma fonte de tensão ininterrupta (UPS – Uninterruptible Power Supply), associado ao funcionamento do VE no modo de operação V2H. O sistema de carregamento de baterias utilizado é constituído por um sistema integrado de potência, do qual constam um conversor CA-CC bidirecional, responsável pela interface entre a rede elétrica e o barramento CC, um conversor CC-CC bidirecional, responsável pela interface entre o barramento CC e as baterias, e ainda elementos passivos inerentes aos respetivos conversores. Além do sistema integrado de potência existe ainda um sistema integrado de controlo, responsável pelo controlo do sistema de carregamento de baterias. Ao longo desta dissertação é apresentado um estudo breve sobre a história e evolução dos VEs, um enquadramento destes no setor dos transportes, e estão apresentadas as diferentes topologias de VEs existentes na atualidade, bem como os desafios e as oportunidades que resultam da integração destes na atual rede elétrica. Posteriormente, é apresentado um levantamento dos conversores que podem ser empregues em sistemas de carregamento de baterias para VEs e das técnicas de controlo que se podem implementar em conjunto com os referidos conversores. Por fim, de modo a avaliar o funcionamento do carregador de baterias nos modos G2V e V2H, são apresentadas as simulações computacionais realizadas com recurso à ferramenta de simulação PSIM, sendo os resultados de simulação validados posteriormente por resultados experimentais obtidos em ensaios realizados em bancada ao protótipo do sistema de carregamento de baterias desenvolvido., In the fight for sustainability, Electric Vehicles (EVs) are seen as one of the most effective tools in the transport sector. However, the integration of EVs into the electrical grid poses new challenges in its managing considering the charging of their batteries, i.e., the operation of EVs in the Grid-to-Vehicle (G2V) mode. In contrast to the challenges that entails these vehicles integration into the grid, there are new concepts associated with the operation of EVs equipped with bidirectional chargers, such as Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H), integrating numerous advantages. In this sense, this masters dissertation aims at the development of an on-board bidirectional battery charging system that allows operation of EVs as an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), associated with the operation of EVs in V2H mode. The used battery charging system is constituted by an integrated power system, which contains a bidirectional AC-DC converter, responsible for the interface between the grid and the DC bus, a bidirectional DC-DC converter, responsible for the interface between the DC bus and the batteries, and passive components inherent to the respective converters. In addition to the integrated power system, there is also an integrated control system responsible for the battery charging system control. Throughout this dissertation a historical survey of EVs is carried out, it is explained how these vehicles fit in the transport sector, and are presented different EVs topologies, as well as the challenges and opportunities arising from the integration of EVs into the electrical power grid. Subsequently it is presented a survey of converters that can be employed in battery charging systems for EVs, as well as control techniques that can be implemented with these converters. Finally, in order to assess the operation of a battery charger in G2V and V2H modes, computer simulations are performed using the PSIM simulation tool, and the simulation results are further validated by experimental results obtained with a developed batteries charging system prototype.

8. Plug-in electric vehicle deployment and integration with the electric grid

Abstract

Key battery, semiconductor, and software technologies have sufficiently progressed over the past few decades to enable viable plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) alternatives to conventional vehicles. Alternatives to petroleum-based fuels for transportation are sought to address concerns over energy security, foreign oil derived U.S. trade deficits, oil related geopolitical entanglements, and emissions. The various types of PEVs have substantially different characteristics. The types and key attributes of PEVs, charging standards, and charging locations are described. The likely scenario for PEV-Grid interactions over the next decade is synthesized from the analysis of the technologies available to and circumstances of vehicle manufacturers, utilities, and supplier firms. PEV adoption considerations are evolving. Many lessons have been learned from the first generation of PEVs that were introduced starting in late 2010. Technology, market, and policy drivers of emerging trends in the diffusion of PEVs are explored more in-depth. PEVs as electric loads are unique in that they are large, flexible, and intelligent. These attributes can not only provide utilities a new source of revenue, but also improve grid stability and economics. Actions, technologies, and policies that utilities can deploy to increase adoption are discussed. Actions are explored to make the overall PEV ownership experience superior to a conventional vehicle. This dissertation also describes research of the capability for PEVs in Vehicle to Home (V2H) scenarios, where the vehicle acts as a residential battery storage system and/or a backup generator in a residential microgrid configuration during a grid outage. Residential energy data collected from a smart grid testbed is used with a custom PEV model to assess the performance (in terms of duration and power output) of a BEV or PHEV used for backup power. Our earlier results quantify the extent to which photovoltaic (PV) generation and the characteristics of a PEV (battery size, gasoline availability) affect the backup duration during an electric grid outage. Strategies to further increase backup duration and non-continuous self-sustaining off-grid alternatives were found in our early V2H research. Varied amounts of load curtailment and PHEV engine-generator control improvements are modeled in subsequent research.
