This article deals with the success of the international marketing of local-currency bonds in Uruguay and Colombia which can serve as a valuable addition to emerging market instruments. During 2004, local markets were the popular new asset class in the world of emerging-market fixed-income investing. Investment banks took notice and Uruguay and Colombia both came to market with Eurobonds denominated in their domestic currencies. With these bonds, there are no worries about domestic taxes or custody arrangements. The only thing making them different to an other Eurobond is the currency in which the coupon is calculated. The Colombians were hesitant at first because they were unsure about how their local market would react to foreign issuance. When emerging bond markets started rallying in the second half of 2004, Citigroup persuaded them that a global issue would price inside the curve of the domestic treasury securities. Not only did Colombia raise money abroad more cheaply than it could manage domestically, it also lowered its cost of money at home. This article reports that one of the veterans of the Euromarket, Michael von Clemm resigned in January as chairman of premier issuing house Credit Suisse First Boston Corp. (CSFB). Von Clemm's career hit a high point in 1979 when a hemorrhage of talent from the top of CSFB left the doctor of anthropology holding the twin titles of chairman and chief executive. Battling through a succession of crises, losses of $20 million on one bond issue, allegations of malpractice, waves of defections, Von Clemm drove CSFB to the top of the league. Von Clemm became the public face of CSFB. Outsiders, who often described von Clemm with superlatives, may be surprised to learn how much his reputation had waned within CSFB by the time he left. But von Clemm's abrupt departure surprised CSFB executives. It's hard to discover exactly why he went, because the bank imposed a news blackout on the affair. Von Clemm and Jack Hennessy, the chief executive who has now become chairman, both declined to meet the journal "Euromoney."

A salesman's job is still to sell bonds, but the objective is more clearly defined. The battle probably went too far: some say that CSFB's management couldn't handle its mercurial genius. Others point to CSFB's position at the top of the league tables and say that Rudloff is still the shape of things to come.

Mohamed Younes, Chairman, Kidder Peabody International said that he expect to see U.S. corporate borrowers participate in the Eurobond market more actively during 1981 because of the very high demand for medium and long-term funds in the U.S. He also said that he recommend Eurobond financing if the rates in Europe are equal to or lower than in the U.S., or if the borrower's financing requirements are such that he would need access to more than one market to satisfy his needs. Yassukovich said that market does not attach the same importance to ratings, although the growth in institutional participation by captive insurance companies accustomed to U.S. securities analysis does make it worthwhile to consider a rating.

This article analyzes the increase in Asian issuance of euro-denominated debt as of March 2005. The euro is raising the interest of Asian sovereign issuers as a pretender to the U.S. dollar's position as the reserve currency of choice. The interest in the euro can be seen as driven by investors in Europe. A lot of demand is driven by the consolidation of institutional investors in Europe. With good corporate credits hard to come by, grim economic growth prospects for continental Europe and uncertainty at best in the U.S., European investors have flocked to Asia where the outlook is much better. Given this background, it is not surprising that recent euro deals from Asian borrowers have priced inside comparable U.S. dollar issues. Despite a lot of noise from the euro camp, there is little chance of the euro usurping the dollar in terms of the preferred Asian currency for debt issues any time soon. Most bankers think what is happening is a subtle currency diversification among some Asian sovereign and quasi-sovereign borrowers rather than a fundamental shift towards the euro. There is evidence that much of the euro issuance to data has been pricing-driven rather than due to issuers shunning dollars.
