This article presents a forum about the impact of Euro on the capital markets and exchange rate regimes of central and eastern Europe, which was held at the Le Meridien Waldorf Hotel in London, England on June 22, 1998. According to Creditanstalt treasurer Patrick Butler, the impact of the Euro on central and eastern European economies is part of the general integration process we are seeing in these economies towards western Europe. Heinz Bednar, head of fixed income research at Bank Austria Creditanstalt, claimed that monetary stabilization and synchronization with western business cycles are a target in all these countries. He added that one concern is that when eastern European currency baskets were set up the dollar segment made sense because the contractual currency is dollar and a lot of debt was denominated in dollar.
