The present study aimed to carry out a survey of food plants and carry out their respective characterization in the quilombola community of Jacarequara, municipality of Santa Luzia do Pará, State of Pará, Brazil. Priority was given to a qualitative-quantitative methodological approach, using participant observation, semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, guided tours and a free list to compose the botanical inventory. The data obtained were tabulated and systematized, in addition to calculating the frequency of citation of the species and the Cognitive Salience Index (ISC, by their acronyms in Portuguese) of the food plants inventoried. A total of 140 food ethnospecies were catalogued, with Euphorbiaceae (27), Arecaceae (12), Musaceae (10) and Rutaceae (9) standing out. Among the food plants with the highest ISC, were açaí (Euterpe oleracea), banana (Musa paradisiaca), mandioca (Manihot esculenta), coconut (Cocos nucifera), cashew (Anacardium occidentale), acerola (Malpighia glabra), bacaba (Oenocarpus bacaba) and orange (Citrus sinensis). From the analysis of the data obtained by this study, it was observed the great importance of food plants and this is because they compose not only their food base, but also be present in income generation and represent the local food culture. FORAGE plants , *TRADITIONAL knowledge , *HISTORICAL source material , *DATA recorders & recording , *WILD plants - Abstract
Background and aims: The knowledge about the forage plants of the “criollos” of the central-northern of the province of Chaco (Argentina), their forms of management and the extra-nutritional effects those have on their livestock, is studied. M&M: Interviews recorded with 51 Creole residents during six campaigns carried out between 2017 and 2022 is used. The uses are described in their precise sociocultural context of reference, and unpublished ethnobotanical data on the subject are compiled and updated with which a diachronic comparison is made with the current ones. Results: A total of 624 ethnobotanical data is recorded on 185 types of forages corresponding to 143 wild or feral plant taxa and 11 exotic ones. A total of 31 ethnobotanical data were obtained regarding their foraging practices, as well as 34 about the extra-food effects of their ingestion. Only half of the total plants and types of forage recorded in the field were identical to those cited in unpublished historical sources on the subject for the same bio-cultural complex. In total 850 ethnobotanical data associated with 348 forage plants were recorded. Conclusions: Knowledge about forage plants is embedded in a socio-cultural bias based on a differential valuation of the livestock that consumes them. This enormous volume of knowledge and appreciation of the native forest as a source of maintenance for its livestock reaffirms the high significance that its livestock activity has as a source of sustenance among Chaco’s creole people.

SCIENTIFIC knowledge , *USEFUL plants , *HISTORY of science , *PLANT conservation , *LOCAL knowledge - Abstract
While the importance of interdisciplinary approaches is increasingly recognised in conservation, bridging knowledge systems across scales remains a fundamental challenge. Focusing on the Important Plant Areas (IPA) approach, we evaluate how complementing scientific and local knowledge can better inform the conservation of useful plants in Colombia. We worked in three municipalities to investigate knowledge on useful plant richness, species composition and use types, as well as perceptions on area-based plant conservation approaches. Participatory focus groups and ethnobotanical walks-in-the-woods were undertaken with local communities, while scientific data were represented by occurrence records from global data aggregators and digitised collections. A total of 1190 species with human uses were reported. Combining knowledge systems provided the richest understanding of useful plants but the relative contribution of each system varied between study areas, influenced by the history of scientific studies, socio-ecological context and study design. Meanwhile, local perceptions of how conservation areas should be selected differed from global IPA criteria. These results show that working with local communities can improve biological understanding for spatial conservation planning. Additionally, participatory approaches must move beyond community-based conservation and data collection, to inform the design of global conservation programmes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The Solanaceae family is one of the most important families of angiosperms from an economic point of view. With nearly 100 genera and 3,000 species, it includes important food, condiment, and medicinal plants. One of the three most varied and extensive genera of Solanaceae is Lycianthes. Lycianthes sanctaeclarae (Greenm.) D’Arcy, is a species native to Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Panama. which is found in the rainforest at an altitude of 0 to 600 meters above sea level. Objective: The purpose of this research is to obtain information about the species Lychianthes sanctaeclarae for the determination of the ethnobotanical potential of said species, through a bibliographic database review. Method: A bibliographic review and an analysis of the possible ethnobotanical applications, biological activities, and chemical constitution of the Solanaceae family, specifically Lycianthes sanctaeclarae, were conducted. Results: Solanaceae has floristic, ethnobotanical, ornamental, ritual, economic, and medical importance. They include a wide variety of phytochemicals, among which alkaloids stand out, with interesting biological properties, with anticholinergic activity being the most investigated. Conclusions: The lack of information that exists on the species Lycianthes sanctaeclarae was determined. Even so, due to its relationship with the Solanaceae family, it is possible to consider that this species could be a striking option for the development of new drugs; However, it is necessary in the future to identify, isolate, purify, and characterize the bioactive compounds that this species has by constructing its phytochemical profile. URBAN research , *AGROBIODIVERSITY , *PLANT species , *CUCURBITACEAE , *BRASSICACEAE - Abstract
This contribution is part of the urban ethnobotany research line whose main objective is to study botanical knowledge in the urban and peri-urban environment. This work is oriented to know the ethnospecies (which include plant species and local botanical varieties) used by the Bolivian families of the La Plata horticultural belt for the elaboration of their typical/daily dishes. Six fairs and 22 vegetable and fruit sales stalls in the urban area were surveyed, three of which concentrate the largest number of registered ethnospecies: Solanaceae (13), Cucurbitaceae (8) and Brassicaceae (6); along with the part of the plant that is commercialized, being the fresh fruits in bulk the predominant form (59%). This contribution expands knowledge of the diet of migrants, the uses and adaptation of their gastronomy. In conclusion, the sellers reported that they use all the ethnospecies that they sell in their daily cooking, fulfilling an important role within their home, as well as their crops that increase the local agrobiodiversity. NATIVE species , *COLLECTIVE memory , *PLANT species , *HISTORICAL libraries ,SPANISH colonies - Abstract
The following paper will focus its attention on Guayascate, a village located in the north of the Córdoba Province (Argentina), which currently symbolizes a significant point of archaeological and historical interest for having been a post on the Royal Road at the time of the entry of the Spanish colony into that region. With the Spanish settler's arrival, many changes arose, including the entry of new food species that influenced the socio-cultural and economic dynamics of the population. Food consumption is a dimension of analysis that allows us to visualize changes and continuities in cultural practices in a socioeconomic, environmental, and historical changing context. For this reason, it was proposed to analyze the entry of new Hispanic edible plant species, deepening the perception of the current inhabitants about the historical value of this village and the widespread understanding associated with the diverse species. In order to acquire data, we conducted 14 open and semi-structured interviews at three different moments: first a free listing, then a recognition of species and practices associated with them based on a photographic sampler, on third place series of open questions to delve into the perception of this knowledge, and their historical assessment. For a more in-depth analysis of the historical ethnobotany approach, two essential elements are a review of archaeological records and historical archives to configure an analysis of continuity over time of the distinguishable species. In sum, it is concluded that, although there are affected pre-Hispanic identities and the native species in their majority are not represented in current culinary practices, the knowledge persists in the collective memory and is submerged in combinations and resignifications network together with the knowledge associated to the introduced plants, thus showing new possibilities of cultural identities.

The fundamental purpose of this research was to document the use of plant species in the culinary practice of the El Anegado parish, with a notable focus on their applicability as foods, condiments and beverages, especially relevant for visitors. To achieve this goal, group discussions, interviews and dialogues with local residents were used to capture and document their knowledge of plants used in traditional cuisine. A total of 41 species were identified, covering 24 families of gastronomic relevance. Most of these species are cultivated, reflecting the active interaction between local communities and the surrounding natural environment. Among the families, Fabaceae and Rutaceae stand out, which stand out for housing a greater number of species of culinary interest. 74 gastronomic uses were recorded, distributed in three main categories: drinks (29), edible plants (27) and condiments (18). It is important to note that the same species can be used for various culinary purposes. The importance attributed to species such as Musa paradisiaca and Zea mays is striking, which constitute the fundamental basis of numerous characteristic dishes of local gastronomy. The variety of species identified and the uses attributed to them reveal a rich and deep-rooted interaction between the community and its natural environment. The preservation of these culinary practices not only enriches the gastronomic experience, but also promotes the conservation of local biodiversity and the preservation of valuable traditions.

The Amazon biome is a large region that extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the Andes, occurs in nine South American countries, and covers 69% of Brazil. This study was made between September 2019 and September 2020 and had the objective of learning about the ethnobotanical knowledge held by the Pericumã Quilombola community, in the municipality of Bequimão, in Baixada Maranhense, Maranhão State, Brazil. We conducted semi-structured, census-type interviews with the heads of households (men and women) who were 30 to 93 years old. The species were categorized according to their form of use in the community. To accomplish the objective, the value in use (VU), rarefaction curve and Chao1 for sample sufficiency of the research were used. A total of 144 vernacular names were cited, corresponding to 136 species, 109 genera and 46 families. The most cited forms of use were food and medicinal and the species with the highest VU were: babaçu, Attalea speciosa Mart. Ex Spreng.; mango, Mangifera indica L.; cashew, Anacardium occidentale L., due to its socioeconomic and cultural importance in Baixada Maranhense. For the conservation status, some of the species are classified under different threat categories, such as vulnerable (VU), least concern (LC) and near threatened (NT), demonstrating the importance of ethnobotanical and ecological studies in the region. The results showed that the Pericumã community has a vast knowledge about the local vegetation and its ways of use, highlighting the great floristic and cultural richness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NATIVE species , *TRADITIONAL medicine , *HERBAL medicine , *MEDICAL personnel , *PLANT species - Abstract
The Brazilian Northeast has a rich native flora used for therapeutic purposes in folk medicine. National Policies and Programs encourage the use of folk medicine plants in their Health System, prioritizing local species as a strategy to make herbal medicine more credible among users. However, the lack of knowledge of plants by health professionals, the emphasis on allopathic medicine and the lack of knowledge of plant species on official lists in different regions of the country are some of the factors identified as barriers to the success of such programs. In this perspective, the present research reviewed the literature on ethnobotany in order to know the main species of native medicinal plants used in this region and with potential for phytotherapy. After consulting the Virtual Health Library (BVS) and PubMed, 58 articles published between January/2015 and December/2019 were selected, with 590 species of medicinal plants cited in ethnobotanical studies being recorded. Of these species, 129 (22%) were cited between 5 to 35 studies and 35 (27%) of the species have authorization for use as herbal medicines, of which only 11 species (31.43%) are native. It was found that of the 71 species listed in the National List of Medicinal Plants of Interest to the Unified Health System in Brazil, 60 are used by human communities in the Northeast, reinforcing the region's contribution to the theme. 57 native species are presented that still do not have authorization for simplified registration as herbal medicine, but are used in folk medicine. These data seek to minimize the lack of knowledge about native species and value their use in regional phytotherapy. It is suggested to encourage research in partnership with local communities that analyze the therapeutic action of medicinal plants and encourage their use in Primary Health Care, in accordance with Law 13.123/2015, in order to protect access to traditional knowledge and guarantee the benefit sharing. The general aim of this work is to distinguish and identify the Creole of the Argentine Subhumid Chaco as a new bio-cultural complex, to describe the botanical correspondences of their phytonymy, and to carry out a general characterization of their ethnobotany. Six field works were carried out between October 2017 and March 2022 in the center-north of Chaco Province. Classic ethnobotanical methodology was applied. This consisted of interviews and the collection of herbarium material with 51 collaborators from the area. A total of 541 matches between 369 botanical taxa and 457 types of vernacular names were obtained from 2075 reports; 1625 Criollos' plant uses or meanings were registered. This refers to a total of 420 taxa throughout 4290 reports or mentions. Results from quantitative comparisons with Criollos' phytonymic correspondences registered in neighboring areas of the Subhumid Chaco allow us to infer that the latter belong to the same bio-cultural complex proposed here. If we added these phytonyms to those obtained in the field it makes a total of 837 correspondences among 662 types of vernacular names assigned to 537 plant taxa, and three mushrooms. On the other hand, results of the quantitative comparisons between this phytonymy and those found in ethnobotanical investigations with Criollos from the Humid and Semiarid Chaco allow us to infer substantial differences between them, which reaffirms the condition of the Criollos of the Subhumid Chaco as a new bio-cultural complex. A review of the Colombian species of Ericaceae with edible fruits is presented, with emphasis on their use, propagation, and cultivation. Twenty-five species in ten genera were recorded, whose highest diversity is concentrated in Cavendishia, Disterigma, Gaultheria, and Vaccinium. Most of the species are distributed in the middle and upper areas of the Eastern and Central Andean Mountains. Although direct and sporadic fruit consumption is the most frequent, fruit processing into derived products was reported for seven species, and only three of them have had some level of trade. Although propagation and cultivation studies are concentrated on Vaccinium meridionale, basic propagation studies are recorded on Vaccinium floribundum, Macleania rupestris, Cavendishia bracteata, Disterigma alaternoides, and Thibaudia floribunda. However, most fruits of Colombian Ericaceae are primarily harvested from wild populations. Detailed studies of the effect of harvesting on natural populations are not currently known, nor are there management plans for their use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
