This article discusses the chemical composition and antibacterial and antifungal activities of essential oils derived from the rhizome and aerial part of Conamomum vietnamense, a rare plant found in Vietnam. The essential oils were extracted and analyzed, revealing the presence of various compounds. The antimicrobial effects of the oils were tested, and it was found that the rhizome oil showed stronger activity against bacterial and fungal strains compared to the aerial part oil. This article, published in the Chemistry of Natural Compounds journal, explores the chemical components and antimicrobial properties of the essential oil derived from Curcuma vitellina, a rare species of Curcuma found in Vietnam. The essential oil was extracted from the rhizomes of C. vitellina and analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The study identified 36 compounds, with 1,8-cineole and β-pinene being the most prevalent. The essential oil exhibited strong antibacterial effects against 11 tested bacteria, with Escherichia coli being the most susceptible, and also inhibited the growth of three Candida strains. In this study, the chemical compositions and the antibacterial effects of the essential oils of two specimens of I C. xanthella i collected from two different habitats in Binh Chau-Phuoc Buu Nature Reserve were investigated for the first time. The chemical compounds from the studied essential oils are identified by using the gas chromatograph GC TRACE 1310 coupled with a single quadrupole mass spectrometer ISQ 7000 (Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., Waltham, MA, USA). Accordingly, the rhizome, flower and leaf essential oils of I M. verrucosa i consisted of 22, 18, and 17 compounds, respectively in which they were characterized by large quantities of cyclofenchene (42.8, 47.8, and 44.7%), I i -pinene (19.7, 20.6, and 19.8%), I i -ocimene (22.9, 22.9, and 25.8%). For instance, xanthorrhizol, an abundant constituent isolated from the essential oil of I C. xanthorrhizza i and I C. aromatica i rhizomes, has been known to exhibit a wide variety of biological activities such as anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antihyperglycemic properties [[4]-[6], [16]-[18]]. The disk diffusion test was the method used to study the antibacterial activity of the essential oils [[15]]. Clausena is a genus of Rutaceae family commonly used in traditional medicine. This report aims to provide the brief review on the chemical components and bioactivities of essential oils (EOs) isolated from Clausena plants. The phyto-chemicals of EOs obtained from different plant parts of Clausena species are characterized by several chemical groups such as oxygenated sesquiterpene, oxygenated monoterpene, monoterpene hydrocarbons, sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, etc. In addition, the studied oils also possess the antimicrobial, insecticidal and larvicidal activities. In this study, the phytochemical composition and antibacterial activity of the essential oils isolated from the rhizomes and the aerial parts of Homalomena cochinchinensis were analysed for the first time using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and disk diffusion method. Consequently, 36 constituents were reported from H. cochinchinensis rhizomes, including linalool (57.4%), terpinen-4-ol (10.6%), α-sabinene (4.2%) as major compounds. Meanwhile, 30 compounds have been identified in the essential oil of the aerial parts of H. cochinchinensis, which myrcene (41.1%), sabinene (8.2%), D-limonene (9.1%) were the main constituents. Furthermore, the antibacterial activity of the essential oil from the rhizomes of the studied species could inhibit the growth of all six tested bacterial strains, including Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella enteritidis and Salmonella typhimurium whereas the essential oil from the aerial parts was proved to be able to inhibit the growth of five bacterial strains except S. enteritidis. The present study investigated the chemical composition of the essential oils from bulbs of four popular garlics in Southern Vietnam for the first time, including Ly Son, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, and Soc Trang Provinces. By using hydrodistillation and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, twenty-eight compounds were identified from essential oils. Among those, sulfide compounds, the main constituents were found in all four studied samples, including diallyl sulfide, dimethyl trisulfide, and diallyl disulfide. A total of 27 compounds were determined in the I C. pygmaea i aerial parts in which I i -pinene (21.8%), caryophyllene (15.5%), caryophyllene oxide (11.6%), xanthorrhizol (11.3%), I i -pinene (5.7%), 2-bornanone (5.3%), I i -curcumene (4.4%), humulene (4.0%), and I i -curcumene (2.9%) were the major components (Table 1). Five bacterial strains, including I Pseudomonas aeruginosa i (ATCC 27853), I Salmonella enteritidis i (ATCC 13976), I Salmonella typhimurium i (ATCC 13311), I Bacillus cereus i (ATCC 11774), and I Staphylococcus aureus i (ATCC 25923) were used to identify the antibacterial activity of the essential oils from I A. phanluongii i rhizomes. The present study aims to provide information regarding the chemical profiles and antibacterial activity of the essential oils isolated from I A. phanluongii i rhizomes.
