Tectonic subsidence on rifted, passive continental margins are largely controlled by patterns of extension and the nature of strain partitioning in the lithosphere. The Sunda Shelf, adjacent to the SW South China Sea, is characterized by deep basins linked to regional Cenozoic extension associated with propagating seafloor spreading caused by slab pull from the south. Analysis of seismic reflection profiles and drilled sections crossing the Nam Con Son and Cuu Long basins highlight Oligocene extension, with most of the thinning concentrated in the ductile mid-lower crust. Upper crustal extension was modest and ductile flow is inferred to be directed northwestwards, towards the oceanic crust. Basin inversion occurred in the Mid Miocene, associated with the collision of the Dangerous Grounds Block and Borneo. Subsequent accelerated tectonic subsidence exceeded predictions from uniform extension models assumed to relate to extensional collapse after inversion. We correlate this to a period of faster erosion onshore driven by strong monsoon rains in Indochina and Peninsular Thailand at that time. Erosion of the onshore basement, inducing rock uplift and coupled with loading of the basins offshore, drives ductile mid-lower crustal flow, likely to the northeast under Indochina, and/or to the west where Plio-Pleistocene subsidence of the shelf is very slow. Significant sediment delivery from the Mekong River into the Cuu Long Basin began in the Late Miocene and migrated seawards as the basin filled. Mass balancing suggests that the basins of this part of the Sunda Shelf are filled through erosion of bedrock sources around the Gulf of Thailand. Cenozoic mountain building in Asia has been proposed as an important control over global climate by atmospheric CO 2 drawdown through silicate weathering and burial of organic carbon (OC) offshore. Because Asian submarine fans represent the most complete record of Asian orogenic erosion and weathering over the Cenozoic, evaluation of sediment major element chemistry and OC content can be used to estimate CO 2 sequestration rates driven by silicate chemical weathering and OC burial. From deep-sea fans in the Indian Ocean and South China Sea, weathering rates are calculated by comparison of weathered sediment to initial bedrock source compositions and then integrated with deposited volumes to derive the first regional weathering budget for India-Asia collision over the last ∼25 m.y. Results indicate the Indus is more important than previously recognized before and during the middle Miocene in sequestering CO 2 (∼76% of Asian total at 16–14 Ma). This in part reflects the more reactive mafic and ultramafic bedrock sources compared to the largest and major east Himalayan drainage, the Ganga-Brahmaputra, but also greater erosional flux from the onshore Indus drainage at that time. This regional synthesis further concludes that OC burial only represented a minority (20–25%) of the regional carbon budget but became more important after 17 Ma, peaking at ∼38% after ∼3 Ma. CO 2 sequestration rates increased from 17 to 15 Ma, coinciding with the Miocene Climatic Optimum, and remained mostly steady in Asia from ∼15–5 Ma as the climate cooled. Only one of three possible sediment flux models for the Bengal Fan predicts increased CO 2 consumption rates after 15 Ma and, even then, only predicts steady rates from 11 to 5 Ma. Sediment transport through the Mississippi River affects the lives and economies of millions of people along its course, so that understanding the controls on this process is of scientific and societal importance. Detrital U‐Pb geochronology, supported by grain size and major element data, can be a robust tool for constraining sediment provenance in clastic sedimentary systems that has been applied to the Mississippi. However, sediment storage and reworking can complicate interpretation, and this can be further exacerbated by anthropogenic alteration via the construction of levees, dams, locks and river diversion projects. In this study, we date zircons from the modern Mississippi River and compare them to previously acquired data to illustrate the difference between samples taken from the same catchment in order to better understand the downstream propagation of the modern detrital zircon signal. The modern Mississippi River and tributary systems show distinct similarities and are comparable between studies when samples are not too far separated (<100 km). We estimate that the Arkansas River is more important than previously proposed, at least in terms of sand supply, supplying 7%–11% of the total load. The largest supplier of sediment to the Mississippi is the Missouri River (33%–43%), which derives much of its sediment from sedimentary rocks in the foredeep deposited during the Sevier and Laramide events. Anthropogenic alteration of the modern river system can be seen in the downstream propagation of a Red River cut‐off signal following construction of the "River Control Structure", implying slow zircon transport rates (<2.8 km/year). The Indus Fan, located in the Arabian Sea, contains the bulk of the sediment eroded from the Western Himalaya and Karakoram. Scientific drilling in the Laxmi Basin by the International Ocean Discovery Program recovered a discontinuous erosional record for the Indus River drainage dating back to at least 9.8 Ma, and with a single sample from 15.6 Ma. We dated detrital zircon grains by U‐Pb geochronology to reconstruct how erosion patterns changed through time. Long‐term increases in detrital zircon U‐Pb components of 750–1,200 and 1,500–2,300 Ma record increasing preferential erosion of the Himalaya relative to the Karakoram between 8.3–7.0 and 5.9–5.7 Ma. The average contribution of Karakoram‐derived sediment to the Indus Fan fell from 70% of the total at 8.3–7.0 Ma to 35% between 5.9 and 5.7 Ma. An increase in the contribution of 1,500–2,300 Ma zircons starting between 2.5 and 1.6 Ma indicates significant unroofing of the Inner Lesser Himalaya (ILH) by that time. The trend in zircon age spectra is consistent with bulk sediment Nd isotope data. The initial change in spatial erosion patterns at 7.0–5.9 Ma occurred during a time of drying climate in the foreland. The increase in ILH erosion postdated the onset of dry‐wet glacial‐interglacial cycles suggesting some role for climate control. However, erosion driven by rising topography in response to formation of the ILH thrust duplex, especially during the Pliocene, also played an important role, while the influence of the Nanga Parbat Massif to the total sediment flux was modest. The Himalaya represents the type example of such interactions, where the growth of the mountains and the Asian monsoon interact. Sediments from the Arabian Sea allow the long‐term erosion patterns of the NW Himalaya to be reconstructed. We use the crystallization age of zircon sand grains in sediment dating back to 15.6 Ma to see how the erosion has changed in response to the evolving climate. There is a trend toward more erosion from the Himalaya and less from the Karakoram starting around 8.3–7.0 Ma, which was a time of transition toward a drier climate in the NW Himalaya. Furthermore, we see a sharp increase in erosion from the Inner Lesser Himalaya starting between 2.5 and 1.6 Ma. This was caused by the formation of a thrust duplex pushing up these ranges, which in turn focused orographic precipitation. The timing of this exposure is much younger than understood from studies of sedimentary rocks in the foreland basin onshore. Our study highlights the role that tectonics plays in controlling what parts of the mountain belt are subject to the fastest erosion. Uplift and erosion of the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau have resulted in the deposition of some of the largest sedimentary masses on Earth. Chemical weathering of these materials has been invoked as a primary driver of long‐term global cooling because weathering of silicate material consumes atmospheric CO2. We here combine geochemical data from scientific drill sites in the Arabian and South China Seas, together with sediment mass flux budgets, to estimate changes in chemical weathering fluxes for the Indus, Mekong, and Pearl river systems. The rate of CO2 consumption decreased by 50% between ∼16 and 5.3 Ma, especially in the Indus system, as onshore erosion slowed and provenance shifted away from mafic arc units in the suture zone. Falling chemical weathering fluxes during a period of global cooling refutes the idea that Himalaya–Tibetan Plateau uplift drove Neogene global cooling. It has been proposed that initiation of the uplift of the Himalayas and Tibetan Plateau caused faster erosion. We test the hypothesis of a major Paleogene river draining the SE Tibetan Plateau and the central modern Yangtze Basin that then flowed south to the South China Sea. We test this model using U‐Pb dated detrital zircon grains preserved in Paleogene sedimentary rocks in northern Vietnam and SW China. We applied a series of statistical tests to compare the U‐Pb age spectra of the rocks in order to highlight differences and similarities between them and with potential source bedrocks. Monte Carlo mixing models imply that erosion was dominantly derived from the Indochina and Songpan‐Garzê Blocks and to a lesser extent the Yangtze Craton. Some of the zircon populations indicate local erosion and sedimentation, but others show close similarity both within northern Vietnam, as well as more widely in the Eocene Jianchuan, Paleocene‐Oligocene Simao, and Oligocene‐Miocene Yuanjiang basins of China. The presence of younger (<200 Ma) zircons from the Qamdo Block of Tibet is less easily explicable in terms of recycling by erosion of older sedimentary rocks and implies a regional drainage linking SE Tibet and the South China Sea in the Late Eocene‐Oligocene. Detrital zircons from offshore in the South China Sea showed initial local erosion, but with a connection to a river stretching to SE Tibet in the Late Oligocene. A change from regional to local sources in the Early Miocene in the Yuanjiang Basin indicates the timing of disruption of the old drainage driven by regional plateau uplift. Plain Language Summary: The unusual geometries of rivers in SW China and SE Tibet, especially the sharp bend in the Yangtze River, suggest that the modern rivers are the product of disruption of an older drainage that used to supply sediment from Tibet to the South China Sea in the Paleogene. In this work we measured the age of the zircon sand grains in sedimentary rocks stretching across the region but especially in newly redated sediments from northern Vietnam. The ages of these crystals are diagnostic of different source areas. We see similarities between these age patterns in SW China, as well as in similar aged rocks in Vietnam and extending into the offshore in the Late Oligocene. The zircon ages change radically before the Late Miocene (~10 Ma), implying that the rivers were close to their present state by that time. The regional similarities are supportive of the idea that a major river existed in this region prior to around 35 Ma. This was disrupted by the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau, which caused a retilting of Asia toward the east and the break‐up of the old drainage pattern, creating the modern Yangtze and Red Rivers. The late Miocene is a time of strong environmental change in SW Asia. Himalayan foreland stable isotope data show a shift in the dominant vegetation of the flood plains away from trees and shrubs towards more C4 grasslands at a time when oceanic upwelling increased along the Oman margin. We present integrated geochemical and colour spectral records from International Ocean Discovery Program Site U1456 in the eastern Arabian Sea to reconstruct changing chemical weathering and erosion, as well as relative humidity during this climatic transition. Increasing hematite/goethite ratios derived from spectral data are consistent with long-term drying after c. 7.7 Ma. Times of dry conditions are largely associated with weaker chemical alteration measured by K/Rb and reduced coarse clastic flux, constrained by Si/Al and Zr/Al. A temporary phase of increased humidity from 6.3 to 5.95 Ma shows a reversal to stronger weathering and erosion. Wetter conditions can result in both more and less alteration due to the nonlinear relationship between weathering rates, precipitation and sediment transport times. Trends in relative aridity do not follow existing palaeoceanographic records and are not apparently linked to changes in Tibetan or Himalayan elevation, but more closely correlate with global cooling. An apparent opposing trend in the humidity evolution in the Indus compared to southern China, as tracked by spectrally estimated hematite/goethite, likely reflects differences in the topography in the Indus compared to the Pearl River drainage basins, as well as the generally wetter climate in southern China. Reconstructing the provenance of siliciclastic marine sediment is important for understanding sediment pathways and constraining palaeoclimate and erosion records. However, physical fractionation of different size fractions can occur during sediment transport, potentially biasing records derived from bulk sediment. In this study, records of radiogenic Sr and Nd isotopic composition and K/Al ratio of the separated clay fraction, as well as bulk grain size, are presented, measured from deep-sea sediments recovered from International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Sites U1456 and U1457 in the Arabian Sea. These new records are compared with published bulk sediment records to investigate the influence of sediment transport on these proxies and to constrain provenance evolution and its relationship to climate variability since middle Miocene time. Correlations between grain size and the bulk sediment isotopic composition confirm that transport processes are influencing the bulk sediment record. This relationship, although present, is not as strong in the clay-fraction isotopic records. Heterogeneity of bulk sediment likely drives differences between bulk and clay records, thought to be largely controlled by sediment transport processes. The isotopic records reveal variations in provenance that correlate with climatic change at 8–7 Ma, as well as an increase in overall provenance variability beginning at c. 3.5 Ma, likely linked to monsoon strength and glacial–interglacial cycles. The clay-fraction records highlight the potential value of measuring proxy records from multiple size fractions to help constrain provenance records as well as investigate sediment transport and/or weathering and erosion processes recorded in deep-sea sediment archives. We investigate the phased evolution and variation of the South Asian monsoon and resulting weathering intensity and physical erosion in the Himalaya–Karakoram Mountains since late Pliocene time (c. 3.4 Ma) using a comprehensive approach. Neodymium and strontium isotopic compositions and single-grain zircon U–Pb age spectra reveal the sources of the deposits in the east Arabian Sea, and show a combination of sources from the Himalaya and the Karakoram–Kohistan–Ladakh Mountains, with sediments from the Indian Peninsula such as the Deccan Traps or Craton. We interpret shifts in the sediment sources to have been forced by sea-level changes that correlate with South Asian monsoon rainfall variation since late Pliocene time. We collected 908 samples from the International Ocean Discovery Program Hole U1456A, which was drilled in the east Arabian Sea. Time series of hematite content and grain size of the sediments were examined downcore. We found South Asian monsoon precipitation and weathering intensity experienced three phases from late Pliocene time. Lower monsoon precipitation, with a lower variability and strong weathering intensity, occurred during 3.4–2.4 Ma; an increased and more variable South Asian monsoon rainfall, along with strengthened but fluctuating weathering intensity, occurred at 1.8–1.1 Ma; and a reduced rainfall with lower South Asian monsoon precipitation variability and moderate weathering intensity marked the period 1.1–0.1 Ma. Maximum entropy spectral analysis and wavelet transform show that there were orbital-dominated cycles of periods c. 100 and c. 41 ka in these proxy-based time series. We use apatite fission track ages from sediments recovered by the International Ocean Discovery Program in the Laxmi Basin, Arabian Sea, to constrain exhumation rates in the western Himalaya and Karakoram since 15.5 Ma. With the exception of a Triassic population in the youngest 0.93 Ma samples supplied from western Peninsular India, apatite fission track ages are overwhelmingly Cenozoic, largely <25 Ma, consistent with both a Himalaya–Karakoram source and rapid erosion. Comparison of the minimum cooling age of each sample with depositional age (lag time) indicates an acceleration in exhumation between 7.8 and 7.0 Ma, with lag times shortening from ∼6.0 Myr at 8.5–7.8 Ma to being within error of zero between 7.0 and 5.7 Ma. Sediment supply at 7.0–5.7 Ma was largely from the Karakoram, and to a lesser extent the Himalaya, based on U–Pb zircon ages from the same samples. This time coincides with a period of drying in the Himalayan foreland caused by weaker summer monsoons and Westerly winds. It also correlates with a shift of erosion away from the Karakoram, Kohistan and the Tethyan Himalaya towards more erosion of the Lesser and Greater Himalaya and Nanga Parbat, as shown by zircon U–Pb provenance data, and especially after 5.7 Ma based on Nd isotope data. We present a multiproxy record of Sr‐Nd isotopes and major and trace elements for clay‐sized (<2 μm) siliciclastic sediment fractions from the International Ocean Discovery Program Site U1456 in the eastern Arabian Sea to extract reliable chemical indicators not influenced by the grain‐size effect, quantitatively estimate detrital provenance, and constrain silicate weathering/erosion in response to the Indian summer monsoon over orbital timescales. A provenance analysis of fine‐grained siliciclastic sediments indicates a two end‐member mixture from the Indus River (20–90%) and rivers draining the Deccan Traps (10–80%). A prominent increase in terrigenous input from the Indus River occurred at ~0.5 Ma, probably resulting from an intensive erosional event in the Himalayan region. Moreover, αAlK at Site U1456, which is calculated as Al/K ratio of the study sample versus Al/K ratio of the upper continental crust, can be generally used to reflect the chemical weathering intensity in the source regions. During most interglacial and even certain glacial periods, the Indian summer monsoon reinforcement is closely coupled with enhanced continental chemical weathering and physical erosion. Wavelet and spectral analyses of the αAlK record display strong 125‐, 35‐, 29‐, and 23‐kyr periodicities since 1.2 Ma with significant ~100‐kyr cycles established at the end of the Mid‐Pleistocene Transition (~0.7 Ma), suggesting forcing mechanisms linked with both Northern and Southern Hemispheric processes. Significant fluctuations observed in silicate weathering/erosion during ~1.2–0.7 Ma indicate an enhancement of the Indian summer monsoon with increased variability in association with the Mid‐Pleistocene Transition. New bulk sediment Sr and Nd isotope data, coupled with U-Pb dating of detrital zircon grains from sediment cored by International Ocean Discovery Program in the Arabian Sea, allow reconstruction of erosion in the Indus catchment since ~17Ma. Increasing εNd values from 17 to 9.5Ma imply relatively more erosion from the Karakoram/Kohistan, likely linked to slip on the Karakoram Fault and compression in the Southern and Eastern Karakoram. After a period of relative stability from 9.5 to 5.7Ma there is a long-term decrease in εNd values that correlates with increasing relative abundance of >300Ma zircon grains that are most common in Himalayan bedrocks, precluding large-scale drainage capture as the cause of decreasing εNd values in the submarine fan. Although the initial increase in Lesser Himalaya-derived 1500-2300Ma zircons after 8.3Ma is consistent with earlier records from the foreland basin the much greater rise after 1.9Ma, has not previously been recognized and suggests that widespread unroofing of the Crystalline Lesser Himalaya and to a lesser extent Nanga Parbat did not occur until after 1.9Ma. Transient storage and erosion of valley fills, or sediment buffering, is a fundamental but poorly quantified process that may significantly bias fluvial sediment budgets and marine archives used for paleoclimatic and tectonic reconstructions. Prolific sediment buffering is now recognized to occur within the mountainous upper Indus River headwaters and is quantified here for the first time using optically stimulated luminescence dating, petrography, detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology, and morphometric analysis to define the timing, provenance, and volumes of prominent valley fills. This study finds that climatically modulated sediment buffering occurs over 103–104 yr time scales and results in biases in sediment compositions and volumes. Increased sediment storage coincides with strong phases of summer monsoon and winter westerlies precipitation over the late Pleistocene (32–25 ka) and mid-Holocene (~8–6 ka), followed by incision and erosion with monsoon weakening. Glacial erosion and periglacial frost-cracking drive sediment production, and monsoonal precipitation mediates sediment evacuation, in contrast to the arid Transhimalaya and monsoonal frontal Himalaya. Plateau interior basins, although volumetrically large, lack transport capacity and are consequently isolated from the modern Indus River drainage. Marginal plateau catchments that both efficiently produce and evacuate sediment may regulate the overall compositions and volumes of exported sediment from the Himalayan rain shadow. The Pearl River and its tributaries drains large areas of southern China and has been the primary source of sediment to the northern continental margin of the South China Sea since its opening. In this study we use a combination of bulk sediment geochemistry, Nd and Sr isotope geochemistry, and single grain zircon U-Pb dating to understand the source of sediment in the modern drainage. We also performed zircon U-Pb dating on Eocene sedimentary rocks sampled by International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 349 in order to constrain the source of sediment to the rift before the Oligocene. A combination of Nd and Sr isotopes shows that the Gui, Liu and Dong Rivers are likely not important sources. Single grain zircon dates emphasize the importance of the westernmost tributaries (Hongshui and Yu Rivers), which drain the highest topography and tectonically active areas, as the primary sediment producers. Our data indicate that climate is not the primary control on erosion patterns and intensities. Zircon dating also shows that the Gui and Liu Rivers are not generating large sediment yields. Discrepancies between these new data and earlier samples make the role of the Dong River hard to determine, although Nd isotopes suggest that it is not dominant. The source of sediment during the Eocene at IODP Site U1435 appears to have been a relatively local basement source, or a regionally restricted river only draining nearby areas of the Cathaysia Block, similar, but not identical, to the modern Dong River. There is no evidence for a large regional river and we exclude sediment transport from the southwest (Indochina). Our data are consistent with small drainage systems dominating the basin until the end of the Oligocene (~ 24 Ma), after which the Pearl River expanded towards its modern state as a result of headwater capture largely towards the west. We present here bulk sediment major element chemistry, Nd and Sr isotope ratios, and detrital apatite fission-track (AFT) and U-Pb zircon ages to characterize the provenance of the southwestern Taklimakan Desert (northwest China) and the three major rivers draining this region. We establish the spatial and temporal controls on erosion and sediment transport in the modern Tibetan rain shadow. The Hotan River drains the North Kunlun block and is characterized by zircon populations at 160-230 Ma and 370-520 Ma. The Yarkand River shares these grains with the Hotan, but also has a very prominent zircon population at 40--160 Ma, which is common in Karakoram basement, indicating heavy sediment flux from these ranges to that drainage. This implies a strong control on erosion by topographic steepness and precipitation mediated through glaciation. Our zircon data confirm earlier studies that indicated that the Taklimakan sand is derived from both the Kunlun and Pamir Mountains. AFT ages are younger in the Hotan River than in the Kashgar River, which drains the Pamir, and in both are younger than in the Transhimalaya and parts of the western edge of the Tibetan Plateau. Exhumation is estimated at ~1000 m/m.y. in the North Kunlun and ~500 m/m.y. in the eastern Pamir, which have been exhuming more slowly than the western ranges in the recent past. Holocene aggradation terracing was dated using quartz optically stimulated luminescence methods and is mostly associated with times of fluctuating climate after 4 ka, with phases of valley filling dated at 2.6, 1.4, and 0.4 ka. The heights and volumes of the terraces show that sediment storage in the mountains is not a significant buffer to sediment transport, in contrast to the more monsoonal Indus system directly to the south. South of the Mazatag Ridge a significant eolian deposit accumulated ~500 yr ago, but this has been deflated in more recent times. Comparison of the modern river data with those previously measured from Cenozoic foreland sedimentary rocks shows that no sediment similar to that of the modern Yarkand River is seen in the geologic record, which is inferred to be younger than 11 Ma, and probably much less. Uplift of the North Kunlun had started by ca. 17 Ma, somewhat after that of the Pamir and Songpan Garze of northwestern Tibet, dated to before 24 Ma. The Song Gianh is a small-sized (~3500 km2), monsoon-dominated river in northern central Vietnam that can be used to understand how topography and climate control continental erosion. We present major element concentrations, together with Sr and Nd isotopic compositions, of siliciclastic bulk sediments to define sediment provenance and chemical weathering intensity. These data indicate preferential sediment generation in the steep, wetter upper reaches of the Song Gianh. In contrast, detrital zircon U-Pb ages argue for significant flux from the drier, northern Rao Tro tributary. We propose that this mismatch represents disequilibrium in basin erosion patterns driven by changing monsoon strength and the onset of agriculture across the region. Detrital apatite fission track and 10Be data from modern sediment support slowing of regional bedrock exhumation rates through the Cenozoic. If the Song Gianh is representative of coastal Vietnam then the coastal mountains may have produced around 132 000-158 000 km3 of the sediment now preserved in the Song Hong-Yinggehai Basin (17-21% of the total), the primary depocenter of the Red River. This flux does not negate the need for drainage capture in the Red River to explain the large Cenozoic sediment volumes in that basin but does partly account for the discrepancy between preserved and eroded sediment volumes. OSL ages from terraces cluster in the Early Holocene (7.4-8.5 ka), Pre-Industrial (550-320 year BP) and in the recent past ( ca. 150 year BP). The older terraces reflect high sediment production driven by a strong monsoon, whereas the younger are the product of anthropogenic impact on the landscape caused by farming. Rapid uplift and exhumation is hypothesized to occur within focused zones of orogenic syntaxes which may dominate sediment flux from a mountain belt. The Namche Barwa-Gyala Peri Massif (NBGPM) in the Himalayan Eastern syntaxis is an example of such a high sediment production zone. Here we apply detrital zircon and rutile U–Pb dating to modern river sediments sampled up- and downstream of the Nanga Parbat-Haramosh Massif (NPHM) in the Western Himalayan syntaxis. Mass balancing of these data show that the total amount of sediment contributed to the trunk Indus from NPHM is relatively small, accounting for 9–10% of the total zircons reaching the Arabian Sea, and potentially much less when source fertility is taken into account. The sediment productivity of NPHM is high but likely less than half of that seen at NBGPM (30–56 Mt/yr vs. 72–211 Mt/yr). This discrepancy may be explicable by the drier climate, less prominent syntaxial knick-zone, and weaker spatial relationship between NPHM and the Indus River compared to its eastern twin. Rifted continental lithosphere subsides as a consequence of combined crustal thinning and mantle lithosphere cooling yet basins on some continental margins experience anomalous subsidence events that postdate active extension. Deep basins on the northern margin of the South China Sea, notably the Baiyun Sag, show basement subsidence accelerating after ∼21 Ma, postdating extension by several million years. We combine geophysical observations and numerical forward modeling to show that loading of the offshore basins by increased sediment flux caused by faster onshore erosion following Early Miocene monsoon intensification is a viable trigger for ductile flow after the cessation of active extension. This illustrates that offshore basin dynamics at continental margins with weak crust can be controlled by onshore surface processes in a newly recognized form of climate–tectonic coupling. Abstract: Reconstructing the changing strength of the East Asian summer monsoon has been controversial because different proxies, many being indirect measures of rainfall, tell contrasting stories about how this has varied over long periods of geologic time. Here we present new Sr isotope, grain-size and clastic flux data and synthesize existing proxies to reconstruct changing chemical erosion in the northern South China Sea since the Oligocene, using the links between weathering rates and monsoon strength established in younger sediments as a way to infer intensity. Chemical proxies such as K/Rb, K/Al and the Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA), together with clay proxies like kaolinite/(illite+chlorite) show a steady decline in alteration after a sharp fall following a maximum at the Mid Miocene Climatic Optimum (MMCO; 15.5–17.2Ma), probably as a result of cooling global temperatures. In contrast, physical erosion proxies, including bulk Ti/Ca and clastic mass accumulation rates (MAR), show peaks at 21–23Ma, ~19Ma and 15.5–17.2Ma, implying faster run-off in the absence of drainage capture. Rates increase again, likely driven by slightly increased run-off after 13Ma, but decrease after 8Ma, which is identified as a period of summer monsoon weakening. Sr isotope composition correlates with hematite/goethite and the spectral proxy CRAT to show stronger weathering linked to more monsoonal seasonality. These proxies argue for a strengthening of the East Asian Monsoon after 22–23Ma, followed by an extended period of monsoon maximum between 18 and 10Ma, then weakening. Abstract: In this study we applied 40Ar/39Ar dating methods to muscovite grains in sands from the modern Red and Yangtze Rivers in order to constrain palaeo and modern erosion patterns and sediment transport processes. Micas in the headwaters of the Red River and its southern Da River tributary are dominantly Cenozoic, while the northern Lo River tributary shows a typical 160–220Ma population. The lower reaches of the Red River comprise 53% of such Triassic grains, indicating that the Lo River is the most important net contributor to the modern delta. However, this contrasts with zircon U–Pb data indicating that the upper reaches of the Red River dominate that mineral group. We suggest that the mismatch reflects the rapid transport of mica relative to zircon in the river and the fact that the Red River is not in equilibrium. We hypothesize that the zircons were eroded >8ka under a regime of stronger monsoon that enhanced erosion in the northern drainage basin, while modern erosion is focused in the south, especially in the Song Chay Massif. Micas from the upper Yangtze River are resolvably older than those in the Red River (230–250Ma), so that this method could be used to test for drainage capture in palaeo-delta sediments. Micas in the modern Yangtze delta are generally much younger than those in the upper reaches and indicate that erosion in the Longmen Shan (Sichuan) and neighbouring regions is more important than the upper Yangtze in supplying sediment, reflecting the stronger monsoon rains in those areas. Abstract: The Early Ordovician Grampian Orogeny in the British Isles represents a classic example of collision between an oceanic island arc and a passive continental margin, starting around 480 Ma. The South Mayo Trough in western Ireland preserves a complete and well-dated sedimentary record of arc collision. We sampled sandstones and conglomerates from the Rosroe, Maumtrasna and Derryveeny Formations in order to assess erosion rates and patterns during and after arc collision. U–Pb dating of zircons reveals a provenance dominated by erosion from the upper levels of the Dalradian Supergroup (Southern Highland and Argyll Groups), with up to 20% influx from the colliding arc into the Rosroe Formation, but only 6% in the Maumtrasna Formation (~465 Ma). The dominant source regions lay to the northeast (e.g. in the vicinity of the Ox Mountains, 50 km distant, along strike). The older portions of the North Mayo Dalradian and its depositional basement (the Annagh Gneiss Complex) do not appear to have been important sources, while the Connemara Dalradian only plays a part after 460 Ma, when it supplies the Derryveeny Formation. By this time all erosion from the arc had effectively ceased and exhumation rates had slowed greatly. The Irish Grampian Orogeny parallels the modern Taiwan collision in showing little role for the colliding arc in the production of sediment. Climate is one of the principal controls setting rates of continental erosion. Here we present the results of a provenance analysis of Holocene sediments from the Indus delta in order to assess climatic controls on erosion over millennial time scales. Bulk sediment Nd isotope analysis reveals a number of changes during the late Pleistocene and early Holocene (at 14-20, 11-12 and 8-9 ka) away from erosion of the Karakoram and toward more sediment flux from the Himalaya. Radiometric Ar-Ar dating of muscovite and U-Pb dating of zircon sand grains indicate that the Lesser Himalaya eroded relatively more strongly than the Greater Himalaya as global climate warmed and the summer monsoon intensified after 14 ka. Monsoon rains appear to be the primary force controlling erosion across the western Himalaya, at least over millennial time scales. Marine seismic and drilling data from the Andean margin of Peru and northern Chile show trench retreat and tectonic erosion since at least 20 Ma. However, the onshore coastal zone has undergone modest regional uplift since ca. 2 Ma. This argues against subduction erosion of the margin by steady-state retreat, such as recognized in Tonga or South Sandwich. Instead we identify a new style of slow tectonic erosion. Uplifted forearc sediments indicate underplating of subducted material beneath the base of the coastal forearc, synchronous with tectonic erosion under the trenchward part of the forearc. These observations require slow rates of forearc crust subduction in the region during this time period, averaging no more than 13 km³/m.y/km since 20 Ma as the forearc wedge taper increased. Isostatic volume estimates suggest that as much as 85% of subducted material was underplated under the forearc since 330 ka and does not contribute to crustal growth under the Andes. Abstract: Rates of continental erosion may be reconstructed from variations in the rate of accumulation of clastic sediment, most of which lies offshore. Global rates of marine sedimentation are usually considered to have reached a maximum after 3–4 Ma, driven by enhanced erosion in a variable glacial–interglacial climate. However, a new compilation of seismic data from the marginal seas of Asia now shows that only the Red River reached its historic peak after 4 Ma. Sediment flux from Asia first peaked in the early–middle Miocene (24–11 Ma), well before the initiation of a glacial climate, indicating that rock uplift and especially precipitation are the key controls on erosion, at least over long periods of geologic time. Reconstructions of weathering in East Asia show that faster erosion correlates with more humid, warm climates in the early–middle Miocene, changing to less erosive, drier climates after 14 Ma when Antarctic glaciation begins. Average rates of sedimentation on most east Asian continental margins since 1.8 Ma are 5–6 times less than the modern fluvial flux, implying that the flux to the oceans varies sharply on short timescales and is not always buffered over timescales of ∼104 yr by storage in flood plains. The Indus River is the only major drainage in the western Himalaya and delivers a long geological record of continental erosion to the Arabian Sea, which may be deciphered and used to reconstruct orogenic growth if the modern bedload can be related to the mountains. In this study we collected thermochronologic data from river sediment collected near the modern delta. U-Pb ages of zircons spanning 3 Gyr show that only ∼5% of the eroding crust has been generated since India-Asia collision. The Greater Himalaya are the major source of zircons, with additional contributions from the Karakoram and Lesser Himalaya. The 39Ar/40Ar dating of muscovites gives ages that cluster between 10 and 25 Ma, differing from those recorded in the Bengal Fan. Biotite ages are generally younger, ranging 0-15 Ma. Modern average exhumation rates are estimated at ∼0.6 km/m.y. or less, and have slowed progressively since the early Miocene (∼20 Ma), although fission track (FT) dating of apatites may indicate a recent moderate acceleration in rates since the Pliocene (∼1.0 km/m.y.) driven by climate change. The 39Ar/40Ar and FT techniques emphasize the dominance of high topography in controlling the erosional flux to the ocean. How well do deep-sea sedimentary archives track erosion in upland sources, driven by climatic change or tectonic forcing? Located on the western edge of South Asian monsoon influence, the Indus River system is particularly sensitive to variations in monsoon rainfall and thus provides a unique opportunity to estimate the nature of sedimentary signal propagation (i.e., recognizable pulses of sediment) through a large river basin under different climatic conditions. In this review we examine the impact that changing monsoon rainfall has had on NW Himalayan landscapes and its foreland since the middle Miocene. Rates of erosion are linked to summer monsoon rains over tectonic timescales but patterns of erosion are more explicitly linked to tectonically-driven rock uplift. Positive feedback between rock uplift and orographic precipitation drives increased erosion and transport from the Lesser Himalaya since the Miocene. After 2 Ma, erosion increasingly shifts to the Inner Lesser Himalaya. As defined multiproxy evidence, strong monsoon rainfall intervals broadly result in increased erosion and faster sediment transport together with increased chemical weathering, although the latter is further linked with global temperature and to the magnitude of sediment recycling within the routing system. We estimate that during the Holocene, most sediment (67–89% of the total ~6000 km3 or 16.3 x 1012 t) delivered to the ocean was sourced either from direct bedrock erosion through channel incision linked to higher discharge or from remobilized, recycled glacial sediment initially deposited during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Post-LGM sediment is primarily stored within the delta plain and shelf clinoform systems. Over the last 14 kyr, average mass delivery rates (936–1404 Mt/y) are much higher than pre-damming estimates (pre-1940s; 250–300 Mt/y). To reconcile observations with pre-damming estimates, high sediment supply rates, probably during strong monsoon intervals over the early Holocene, are required. Long-term rates were high (182-273 Mt/y) during a middle Miocene strong monsoon interval. Quaternary Indus submarine fan sedimentation is limited to sea-level lowstands, at which times shelf and delta sediment is eroded and reworked into deep water. As a result, and for at least the past 2–3 m.y., most sediment delivered to the Indus submarine fan was initially eroded from bedrock during strong summer monsoon intervals but deposited into the fan under weak monsoon intervals. During the most recent sea level lowstand, only ~24% of sediment deposited in the fan was derived from synchronous onshore bedrock erosion, with the remaining accounted for by recycled terrace, floodplain, and shelf clinoform system sediment. Variations in monsoon intensity over the last glacial cycle strongly impact the locus of onshore erosion, with increased relative Himalayan bedrock erosion during times of strong, wet monsoon intervals and increased Karakoram bedrock erosion during drier glacial intervals. The Asian monsoon is the dominant climatic phenomenon in Southeast Asia, responsible for most of the regional precipitation. As well as tectonics, climate is well recognized as a primary control on erosion and the transport of sediment to the ocean. Sediment records from the South China Sea show that strong monsoons are associated with intensified reworking of pre-existing floodplain sediments over millennial timescales. Strong monsoons result in deposition of more altered material that is also delivered at higher rates than during more arid times. Millennial-scale changes in monsoon strength result in changes in the weathering regime but not fast enough to account for the changes seen in the sediments preserved in Asian deltas. Instead monsoon modulated recycling dominates. Over longer time periods (>106 y) strengthening of the monsoon is linked to faster bedrock erosion and increased sediment flux of the ocean. Uplift of mountains driven by tectonic forces can influence regional climate as well as regional drainage patterns, which in turn control the discharge of eroded sediment to the ocean. But the nature of the interactions between tectonic forces, climate and drainage evolution remains contested. Here we reconstruct the erosional discharge from the Indus river over the past 30 million years using seismic reflection data obtained from drill core samples from the Arabian Sea and neodymium isotope data. We find that the source of the Indus sediments was dominated by erosion within and north of the Indus suture zone until five million years ago; after that, the river began to receive more erosional products from Himalayan sources. We propose that this change in the erosional pattern is caused by a rerouting of the major rivers of the Punjab into the Indus, which flowed east into the Ganges river before that time. Seismic reflection profiles from the Indus fan suggest high mass accumulation rates during the Pleistocene epoch partly driven by increased drainage to the Indus river after five million years ago and partly by faster erosion linked to a stronger monsoon over the past four million years. During the Holocene there has been a gradual increase in the influence of humans on Earth systems. High-resolution sedimentary records can help us to assess how erosion and weathering have evolved in response to recent climatic and anthropogenic disturbances. Here we present data from a high-resolution (~75 cm/k.y.) sedimentary archive from the South China Sea. Provenance data indicate that the sediment was derived from the Red River, and can be used to reconstruct the erosion and/or weathering history in this river basin. Accelerator mass spectrometry 14C dating provides direct age control and reveals coherent variations in clay mineralogy, geochemistry, and terrigenous flux, indicative of strong chemical weathering and physical erosion during the mid-Holocene warm period (6400-4000 cal [calibrated] yr B.P.), followed by weakening from ca. 4000-1800 cal yr B.P., and renewed intensification since 1800 cal yr B.P.. Comparison with climatic records from China indicates that precipitation and temperature controlled both physical erosion and chemical weathering intensity before 1800 cal yr B.P.. However, weathering proxies in the offshore sediment indicate recent increased soil erosion. We suggest that enhanced human activity (deforestation, cultivation, and mining) since the end of the Chinese Han Dynasty (220 CE) has overwhelmed the natural climatic controls on erosion in the Red River. Subduction erosion is an important process at convergent margins but evidence in the geologic record is scarce because the involved materials are typically lost into the mantle. Detrital zircon dating of accretionary complex sediment allows us to document episodic growth that can be linked to possible triggers. Detrital zircons (n = 2508) from the Mesozoic Chugach accretionary complex, southern Alaska, have U-Pb ages that record progressive subduction accretion punctuated by two periods of tectonic erosion. Lithology and maximum depositional ages permit division of the Chugach accretionary complex into four main units. The oldest, the blueschist-greenschist unit, represents partially subducted sediment associated with a Jurassic oceanic arc, with subduction erosion from 180 to 170 Ma. The end of this erosion period is dated by the oldest maximum depositional age of the Potter Creek assemblage, a <156-169 Ma unit consisting of chert, argillite, and volcanic rocks. A trondhjemite pluton that intrudes the forearc was caused by ridge subduction at 125 Ma and resulted in a second period of subduction erosion lasting until 104 Ma. The end of Aptian--Albian erosion was marked by deposition of massive sandstone and conglomerate of the 101-91 Ma McHugh Creek assemblage. This influx of clastic sediment is interpreted to have occurred in response to the collision of Wrangellia with North America. This event and the erosional event preceding it steepened the forearc region, allowing mass wasting of forearc crust into the trench, filling it by 89 Ma, the oldest maximum depositional age of the Valdez Group flysch. Clasts in conglomerate include granodiorite from the basement of the Talkeetna arc dated from 199 ± 3 Ma to 179 ± 3 Ma, and sandstone clasts with maximum depositional ages of 100 Ma. From 89 Ma to at least 72 Ma, the Valdez Group flysch was deposited via turbidite fans onto the oceanic crust beyond the trench and accreted as imbricate thrust slices that retained coherent bedding. The source for detrital zircons in the Potter Creek assemblage is likely a Middle--Late Jurassic oceanic arc, possibly the Talkeetna arc. The abundance of zircons from ash fall tuffs is consistent with easterly winds and suggests the Chugach accretionary complex was south of latitude 25°N in the Late Jurassic. The dominant source for the Albian McHugh Creek assemblage and the Upper Cretaceous Valdez Group flysch was likely the arc associated with the Coast Mountains batholith. Jurassic (ca. 165 Ma) zircons in the McHugh Creek assemblage could have been derived from exhumed plutons, or may be secondcycle zircons derived from the Potter Creek assemblage. The first appearance of Proterozoic and Archean zircons in the Valdez Group records the breakdown of topographic barriers formed by the accreted arc terranes as rivers encroached into continental North America by the middle Late Cretaceous. Abstract: We present new major and trace element data, together with U–Pb ages for zircon sand grains from the major tributaries of the Indus River, as well as the adjacent Ghaggar and Yamuna Rivers and from bedrocks within the Sutlej Valley, in order to constrain the origin of the sediment reaching the Arabian Sea. Zircon grains from the upper Indus are generally younger than 200Ma and contrast with those from the eastern tributaries eroded from Himalayan sources. Grains younger than 15Ma, which typify the Nanga Parbat Massif, comprise no more than 1–2% of the total, even in the upper Indus, showing that this terrain is not a major sediment producer, in contrast with the Namche Barwe Massif in the eastern Himalayan syntaxis. The Sutlej and Yamuna Rivers in particular are very rich in Lesser Himalayan-derived 1500–2300Ma zircons, while the Chenab is dominated by 750–1250Ma zircons, mostly eroded from the Greater Himalaya. The upper Indus, Chenab and Ravi yield zircon populations broadly consistent with the outcrop areas, but the Jhelum and the Sutlej contain many more 1500–2300Ma zircons than would be predicted from the area of Lesser Himalayan rock within their drainages. A significant population of grains younger than 200Ma in the sands of the Thar Desert indicates preferential eolian, monsoon-related transport from the Indus lower reaches, rather than reworking from the local rivers. Modelling of observed zircon ages close to the delta contrasts with modern water discharge. The delta is rich in zircons dating 1500–2300Ma, while discharge from modern rivers carrying such grains is low. The modest size of the Sutlej, the richest source of these materials in the modern system, raises the possibility that the compositionally similar Yamuna used to flow westwards in the recent past. Our data indicate a non-steady state river with zircon transport times of 5–10k.y. inferred from earlier zircon dating of delta sands. The modern delta zircons image an earlier, likely Early-Mid Holocene, erosional state, in which the Lesser Himalaya were more important as sediment suppliers. Early-Mid Holocene sands show much less erosion from the Karakoram–Transhimalaya compared to those deposited at the Last Glacial Maximum, or calculated from the modern discharge. The Cenozoic erosion history of the Himalaya-Karakoram, which is a function of tectonically driven uplift and monsoon climatic evolution in South Asia, remains elusive, especially prior to the Miocene. Here, we present a multiproxy geochemical and thermochronological analysis of the oldest samples available from the Arabian Sea, which we used to investigate the erosion history of the Himalayan and Karakoram orogenic system. The Indus Fan records rapid and sustained erosion of the Himalayan-Karakoram mountains from before 24 Ma (ca. 30) to ca. 16 Ma concurrent with changing provenance from the Indian (Himalayan) and Eurasian plates. Our data, combined with previous studies of younger Indus Fan deposits, indicate that the mid-to-late Cenozoic erosion history of the Himalayan-Karakoram mountains is overall consistent with a vigorous monsoonal climate from the late Oligocene to middle Miocene and with changes in global climate in the late Miocene, whereas erosion and deposition are relatively insensitive to changes in sources and rock erodibility. Although tectonic processes were active throughout, we suggest that the erosional signatures of the Himalayan-Karakoram mountains from the Indus Fan largely preserve a record of climate changes since the Oligocene. Subduction erosion is a long-term, large-scale geological process that dominates the structural inventory of a large number of convergent margins. Along the Peruvian convergent margin, this process has controlled the structural deformation of the forearc as a consequence of spatio-temporal variations during the Cenozoic. However, the pace at which tectonic erosion occurred has not been linked to regional, subduction-related events. The aim of this study is to show that subduction erosion along the Central Peruvian convergent margin off Trujillo (7∘S–9∘S) was influenced by plate convergence variability since the Late Cretaceous. Drilling data, multi-channel seismic (MCS) data and subsidence analyses are used to investigate the long-term effect of subduction erosion on the tectonic evolution of the Peru margin. Our study shows that subduction erosion (1) did not occur between the Cretaceous and Early Eocene (110–56 Ma), (2) increased and fluctuated between the Eocene and Pliocene (56–5 Ma) with a maximum average trench retreat of 3 km.Myr−1 between the Middle Miocene and Late Miocene (20–5 Ma), and (3) has decreased since the Pliocene (5 Ma) (1 km.Myr−1 of average trench retreat). A remarkable finding is that shorter periods of faster subduction erosion coincide with or follow major plate reorganization events that were marked by changes in the velocity and direction of relative plate convergence as well as with well-known phases of Andean orogeny. Erosion is a key step in the destruction and recycling of the continental crust, yet its primary drivers continue to be debated. The relative balance between climatic and solid Earth forces in determining erosion patterns and rates, and in turn orogenic architecture, is unresolved. The monsoon-dominated frontal Himalaya is a classic example of how surface processes may drive focused denudation and potentially control structural evolution. We investigate whether there is a clear relationship between climate and erosion in the drier Himalayan rain shadow on the periphery of the Tibetan Plateau, where a coupled climate-erosion relationship is less clear. We present a new integrated data set combining bulk petrography, geomorphometric analysis, detrital U-Pb zircon geochronology, and bulk Nd and Sr isotope geochemistry from modern river sediments that provides constraints on spatial patterns of sediment production and transport in the Zanskar River. Zanskar River sands are dominated by Greater Himalayan detritus sourced from the glaciated Stod River catchment, which represents only 13% of the total basin area. Prevalent zircon peaks from Cambrian-Ordovician (440-500 Ma) and Mississippian-Permian (245-380 Ma) units indicate more abundant pre-Himalayan granitoids in the northwest Indian Himalaya than in the central and eastern Himalaya. Erosion from the widely exposed Tethyan Himalaya, however, appears modest. Spatial patterns of erosion do not correlate with highest channel steepness. Our data demonstrate that Zanskar differs from the monsoon-soaked frontal Himalaya and the arid, extremely slow-eroding Tibetan orogenic interior in that focused erosion and sediment production are driven by glaciers. Subsequent remobilization of glacially derived sediments is likely controlled by monsoonal rainfall, and we suggest sediment reworking plays an important role. Changes in sea level are of wide interest because they shape the sedimentary geologic record, modulate flood-related hazards, and reflect Earth's climate. One driver of sea-level change is the erosion and deposition of sediment, which induces changes in sea level by perturbing Earth's crust, gravity field, and rotation axis. Here we use a gravitationally self-consistent global model to explore how sediment erosion and deposition affected sea level during the most recent glacial–interglacial cycle in the northeastern Arabian Sea and the Indus River basin, where fluvial sediment fluxes are among the highest on Earth. We drive the model with a widely used reconstruction of ice mass variations over the last glacial cycle and a sediment loading history that we constructed from published erosion and deposition rate measurements. Our modeling suggests that sediment fluxes from the Indus River are large enough to produce meter-scale changes in sea level near the Indus delta in as little as a few thousand years. These sea-level perturbations are largest closest to the center of the Indus delta, and they grow larger over time as sediment deposition increases. This implies that the elevation of sea-level markers near the Indus delta will be significantly altered by sediment transfer over millennial timescales, and that such deformation should be accounted for in studies that use paleo-sea-level markers to infer past ice sheet volume or explore local processes such as sediment compaction. Our analysis highlights the role that massive fluvial sediment fluxes play in driving sea-level changes over >1000-yr timescales from the Indus River, and, by implication, from other rivers with large sediment fluxes. The Yangtze River dominates the drainage of eastern Asia, yet the processes that control erosion within the basin are obscure, making the interpretation of the detritus record difficult. In this study we used U-Pb dating of zircon grains from the modern main stream and major tributaries to identify the sources of sediment production, based on the diversity of zircon ages associated with the different tectonic blocks over which the Yangtze flows. We demonstrate that tributaries in the central part of the catchment are the most important in supplying sand-sized sediment to the main stream, i.e., the Hanjiang, Xiangjiang and Jialingjiang, as well as along the main stream (Jinshajiang) between Panzhihua and Yibin. Surprisingly, the rivers draining the eastern edge of the Tibetan plateau do not appear to dominate the modern budget, despite their tectonic activity and steep topography. Sediment-productive drainages have high specific stream power (because of significant rainfall as well as steep topography), but are also the locations of early human settlement and agriculture. We suggest that it is the combination of high specific stream power and anthropogenic disruption to the landscape that facilitates sediment supply to the main stream. Because of zircon transport times spanning thousands of years reworking during early to late Neolithic settlement, may be more important than recent farming in controlling the zircon population of the river sands. Our sediment-transport framework explains the discrepancy between sediment sources identified by zircon dating and the strong sediment production in the upper reaches favored by studies of fine-grained sediment or cosmogenic isotopes applied to quartz grains. Abstract: We analyzed sediment from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1144 in the northern South China Sea to examine the weathering response of SE Asia to the strengthening of the East Asian Monsoon (EAM) since 14ka. Our high-resolution record highlights the decoupling between continental chemical weathering, physical erosion and summer monsoon intensity. Mass accumulation rates, Ti/Ca, K/Rb, hematite/goethite and 87Sr/86Sr show sharp excursions from 11 to 8ka, peaking at 10ka. Clay minerals show a shorter-lived response with a higher kaolinite/(illite+chlorite) ratio at 10.7–9.5ka. However, not all proxies show a clear response to environmental changes. Magnetic susceptibility rises sharply between 12 and 11ka. Grain-size becomes finer from 14 to 10ka and then coarsens until ~7ka, but is probably controlled by bottom current flow and sealevel. Sr and Nd isotopes show that material is dominantly eroded from Taiwan with a lesser flux from Luzon, while clay mineralogy suggests that the primary sources during the Early Holocene were reworked via the shelf in the Taiwan Strait, rather than directly from Taiwan. Erosion was enhanced during monsoon strengthening and caused reworking of chemically weathered Pleistocene sediment largely from the now flooded Taiwan Strait, which was transgressed by ~8ka, cutting off supply to the deep-water slope. None of the proxies shows an erosional response lasting until ~6ka, when speleothem oxygen isotope records indicate the start of monsoon weakening. Although more weathered sediments were deposited from 11 to 8ka when the monsoon was strong these are reworked and represent more weathering during the last glacial maximum (LGM) when the summer monsoon was weaker but the shelves were exposed. Abstract: The Okinawa Trough is a natural laboratory for the study of later Quaternary land–ocean interaction and paleoenvironmental changes. In this study we reconstruct the evolution of clay mineral assemblages in Core DGKS9604 retrieved from the central Okinawa Trough. Illite dominates the clay mineral compositions, with average contents above 60%. Clay mineral evolution since 28ka is closely related to changes in sediment provenance and paleoenvironment. Sea level rise and the strength of the Kuroshio Current control the dispersal and deposition of clays on the East China Sea shelf and in the Okinawa Trough, and thus, determine the clay mineral compositions in the core sediments. During the late last glacial period (28.0–14.0ka), the paleo-Changjiang River mouth was situated at the shelf edge close to the central Okinawa Trough and thus, together with the outer shelf, supplied large volumes of terrigenous sediments directly into the trough. From 14.0 to 8.4ka influence from the Changjiang decreased while the mid-outer shelf of the East China Sea became the dominant sediment source to the central Okinawa Trough as sea level rose and the Changjiang river mouth migrated west. Strong sediment reworking and erosion at the shelf edge at 15–13ka significantly increased the lateral transport of fine-grained shelf sediments to the central Okinawa Trough. Since ca. 8.4ka clays from Taiwan have dominated the sediment flux to the site, coinciding with the re-entry of the Kuroshio Current into the trough. The increasing influence of the Changjiang-sourced sediments since 1.5ka was probably related to the weakening of the Kuroshio Current and/or a higher river flux. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The Indus River has been progressively transformed in the last decades into a tightly regulated system of dams and channels, to produce food and energy for the rapidly growing population of Pakistan. Nevertheless, Indus River sands as far as the delta largely retain their distinct feldspar- and amphibole-rich composition, which is unique with respect to all other major rivers draining the Alpine–Himalayan belt except for the Brahmaputra. Both the Indus and Brahmaputra Rivers flow for half of their course along the India–Asia suture zone, and receive major contributions from both Asian active-margin batholiths and upper-amphibolite-facies domes rapidly exhumed at the Western and Eastern Himalayan syntaxes. Composition of Indus sands changes repeatedly and markedly in Ladakh and Baltistan, indicating overwhelming sediment flux from each successive tributary as the syntaxis is approached. Provenance estimates based on our integrated petrographic–mineralogical data set indicate that active-margin units (Karakorum and Transhimalayan arcs) provide ∼81% of the 250±50 106 t of sediments reaching the Tarbela reservoir each year. Partitioning of such flux among tributaries and among source units allows us to tentatively assess sediment yields from major subcatchments. Extreme yields and erosion rates are calculated for both the Karakorum Belt (up to 12,500±4700 t/km2 year and 4.5±1.7 mm/year for the Braldu catchment) and Nanga Parbat Massif (8100±3500 t/km2 year and 3.0±1.3 mm/year). These values approach denudation rates currently estimated for South Karakorum and Nanga Parbat crustal-scale antiforms, and highlight the major influence that rapid tectonic uplift and focused glacial and fluvial erosion of young metamorphic massifs around the Western Himalayan Syntaxis have on sediment budgets of the Indus system. Detailed information on bulk petrography and heavy minerals of modern Indus sands not only represents an effective independent method to constrain denudation rates obtained from temperature–time histories of exposed bedrock, but also provides an actualistic reference for collision-orogen provenance, and gives us a key to interpreting provenance and paleodrainage changes recorded by clastic wedges deposited in the Himalayan foreland basin and Arabian Sea during the Cenozoic. The Lubok Antu Mélange is exposed along one of the most important tectonic lineaments, the Lupar Line in Sarawak, Borneo. However, the depositional age of the Lubok Antu Mélange is poorly known, and no provenance studies have been conducted so far. Here, we use geochemical, Nd isotopic and detrital zircon U Pb analyses of samples from the Lubok Antu Mélange to constrain provenance and routing in order to better understand Borneo's evolution history. Bulk rock geochemistry reveals that the Lubok Antu Mélange was deposited in a continental arc setting related to the Paleo-Pacific subduction margin. New U Pb detrital zircon data suggest that the maximum depositional age for the Lubok Antu Mélange is ca. 115 to 105 Ma. The Lubok Antu Mélange with a strongest Jurassic peak is interpreted to be sourced from the Mesozoic continental arc related to the Paleo-Pacific subduction, with contributions from West Borneo, the Malay Peninsula and possibly Sumatra. Compared with the detrital zircon data of the uppermost Cretaceous sedimentary rocks in Sarawak, our study records a change in source in the latest Cretaceous from erosion of basement magmatic rocks of the Paleo-Pacific subduction-related arc that was probably located offshore of what is now South Vietnam and West Borneo, to the Schwaner Mountains arc of SW Borneo. This indicates that the rapid uplift and exhumation of the Schwaner Mountains could have initiated in the latest Cretaceous, which may imply the arrival of SW Borneo and the closure of the eastern Meso-Tethys at that time. As a latest Pleistocene repository of Indus River sand at the entry point to the Himalayan foreland basin, the Thal dune field in northern Pakistan stores crucial information that can be used to reconstruct the erosional evolution of the Himalayan-Karakorum orogen and the changes in the foreland-basin landscape that took place between the Last Glacial Maximum and the early Holocene. This comprehensive provenance study of Thal Desert sand integrates previously existing petrographic, heavy-mineral, mineral-chemical, isotopic, and geochronological databases with original bulk-sediment geochemistry, zircon-age, and Nd-isotope data. Dune sand is low in quartz and rich in feldspars, volcanic, metavolcanic and metabasite grains, contains a very rich transparent heavy-mineral suite including hypersthene and common zircon grains dated as Late Cretaceous to early Paleogene, and is characterized by high Mg, Sc, V, Co, Ni, Cu concentrations and by ε Nd values as high as −3.5. Together, these data indicate that ~40% of Thal dune sand was supplied by erosion of the Kohistan arc, a proportion that far exceeds the one assessed for modern Upper Indus sand. Greater detrital supply from the Kohistan arc indicates notably different conditions of sediment generation, during a period in which the sediment-transport capacity of the Upper Indus in the dry lowlands was reduced and volumes of sand were extensively reworked by wind and accumulated in dune fields across the foreland basin. In the early Holocene, the renewed strength of the South Asian monsoon and consequently markedly increased water and sediment discharge led to incision of the Thal and Thar dune fields by the Indus River and its Punjab tributaries draining the Himalayan front directly hit by heavy monsoonal rains. • The Thal Desert is an inland archive of Indus sand from the western Himalaya syntaxis. • Sand stored in the Thal dunefield reveals major detrital supply from the Kohistan arc. • High variability of ε Nd values is controlled by minimal changes in monazite content. • The Thal Desert formed in a dry landscape between the LGM and the wet early Holocene.
