Previous studies have demonstrated that vegetation‐generated turbulence can enhance erosion rate and reduce the velocity threshold for erosion of non‐cohesive sediment. This study considered whether vegetation‐generated turbulence had a similar influence on natural cohesive sediment. Cores were collected from a black mangrove forest with aboveground biomass and exposed to stepwise increases in velocity. Erosion was recorded through suspended sediment concentration. For the same velocity, cores with pneumatophores had elevated turbulent kinetic energy compared to bare cores without pneumatophores. However, the vegetation‐generated turbulence did not increase bed stress or the rate of resuspension, relative to bare cores. It was hypothesized that the short time‐scale fluctuations associated with vegetation‐generated turbulence were not of sufficient duration to break cohesion between grains, explaining why elevated levels of turbulence associated with the pneumatophores had no impact on the erosion threshold or rate. This study used sediment cores collected from the interior of a mangrove forest to study how the aboveground roots, called pneumatophores, influence hydrodynamic conditions and sediment transport, and in particular the onset and rate of sediment erosion. This study aims to investigate the hydrodynamic-morphological interactions on a microtidal intermediate-dissipative beach under low to moderate wave energy conditions using field measurements during two climatic seasons. The separate contributions of currents, sea-swell waves, and infragravity waves to high- and low-frequency sediment fluxes were analyzed. The infragravity wave energy was more relevant near the swash zone than in other areas. Although the currents are the primary suspended sediment transport mechanism, the results suggest that the waves are an important driver of sediment suspension from the seabed. The results indicate that Sea-Swell (SS) waves and cross-shore currents are the prevailing hydrodynamic factors in nearshore sediment transport, and the cross-shore suspended sediment transport rates are higher than those in alongshore transport. The submerged bar intensified during the wet season (1–4 November 2018) when the wave height intensities were lower, contrary to the dry season (24–25 March 2018). Significant accretion nearshore was identified (in the subaerial beach) during the wet season when the suspended sediments were greater, the SS-wave heights nearshore were lower, and sediment flux was directed onshore. A notorious erosion was distinguished during the dry season. The most representative volume changes occurred during the dry season (with high erosion), which is attributed to the high SS-wave energy. The quantification of the erodibility of cohesive sediments is fundamental for an advanced understanding of estuarine sediment transport processes. In this study, the surface erosion threshold tc for cohesive sediments collected from two sites in the area of the Port of Hamburg in the River Elbe is investigated in laboratory experiments. An improved closed microcosm system (C-GEMS) is used for the erosion experiments, which allows the accumulation of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) over an experimental run. A total of 34 erosion experiments has been conducted with homogenized samples and bulk densities between 1050 kg/m³ and 1250 kg/m³. The covered range of bulk densities is seen to represent the values commonly exhibited by freshly deposited cohesive sediments. Two approaches to derive tc based on the erosion rate (e-method) and the SSC (SSC-method) were elaborated and compared. For both approaches, only one parameter has to be set in order to facilitate transferability to other devices. The results show a better performance of the SSC-method in terms of lower uncertainties, especially at the upper application limits of the utilized C-GEMS. The application of the SSCmethod yields values for tc between 0.037 N/m² and 0.305 N/m², continuously increasing with bulk density. Repetition tests proved the repeatability of the experimental procedure and utilized methods to derive tc. The derived data for tc is used to fit two mathematical models: i) a highly empirical model relating tc to dry bulk density and ii) a recently proposed model relating tc to the physical properties of the sediment-mixture. While the derived parameters for the first model vary widely for the two sampling sites, the fit-parameter for the lattermodel is virtually independent of the investigated site, suggesting the superiority of this approach. In this study, a new remote sensing tool was used in conjunction with sampling of river bank sediments to map channel migration patterns and estimate the net contribution of bank erosion to the sediment and phosphorus (P) budget of the Nishnabotna River in southwestern Iowa. Between the years 2009 and 2018, we found that at least 1.81 ± 0.57 × 107 Mg of sediment and 8.26 ± 2.5 × 103 Mg of P entered the Nishnabotna River due to channel migration. This equates to 0.87 Mg of sediment per meter of channel per year and 0.40 kg of P per meter of channel per year. Barring additional deposition elsewhere in the river corridor, these values represent as much as 77% of annual suspended sediment and 46% of the annual P export from the watershed. Our results also indicate that the contribution of net sediment and P volume loss by stream order increases sharply from third to sixth order, even though the total channel length is much smaller in the higher orders. These results suggest that bank erosion is an important source of sediment and P within the watershed and that future attempts to decrease riparian exports of sediment and P should focus on high‐order reaches. A thorough understanding of the evolutionary trends of river bifurcation channels is crucial for effective estuarine management in China's Greater Bay Area due to significant morphological changes observed in river mouth channels. At this tide‐influenced river mouth, where suspended sediment transport is dominant, how river mouth bifurcated channels that have different angles to the major axis of the incoming tidal flow in the receiving basin evolve on decadal scales remains unclear. Based on a comparative analysis of historical bathymetric data and numerical experiments using a validated morphodynamic model, we developed a conceptual model to illustrate the two end members of the morphological evolution of river mouth channels: a low‐angle (<45°) main channel and a high‐angle (>45°) secondary channel relative to the major axis of tidal flow in the receiving basin. If the mouth outflow also has a low angle with the main channel, the incoming tidal discharge fluxes have first‐order control over changes in the evolutionary trend of the bifurcated channels by changing the partition of residual sediment discharges between the two bifurcated channels. For example, a high incoming tidal discharge that varies around the mean flow increases the partitioning of residual sediment discharges from the upstream channel to the low‐angle channel, facilitating tide‐induced erosion in the low‐angle channel. By contrast, a low incoming tidal discharge decreases the partitioning of residual sediment discharges from the upstream channel to the low‐angle channel, which facilitates fluvial‐induced erosion in the high‐angle channel. Thus, high tidal discharges usually coincide with the river mouth adopting a single channel, and low tidal discharges facilitate the formation of fluvial‐induced bifurcation. The historical evolution of the river mouth and modern velocity measurements corroborated results derived from model experiments. Purpose: As documented by multiple studies, the construction of artificial reservoirs influences fluvial processes. The hydrographic barrier causes a water regime change, and the effects are evident in the accumulation of sediment in the reservoir as well as the intensification of the erosion process below the dam due to the lack of sediments for transport in the river. Moreover, the use of lateral canals on the reservoirs causes additional transformations of the river system, excluding the river part below the dam from the natural system of the catchment area. This research aimed to determine the impact of the creation and functioning of the Koronowo Reservoir dam on the Brda River and its lateral canal on the continuum of sediment transport, with particular emphasis on suspended sediment. Methods: The research was based on analysing the available hydrological data and the measurements of suspended sediment concentration during the water flushing maintenance works into the Brda River channel. In addition, a set of morphometric indices obtained through dedicated terrain analysis were necessary to understand the area's morphodynamics and sediment sources. The suspended sediment concentration (SSC), suspended sediment volume concentration (SVC), and Sauter mean diameter (SMD) data were measured by a LISST-25X, and spatial data were obtained through the System for Automated Geoscientific Analyses (SAGA GIS) software. Results and conclusion: The results were combined with the Connectivity Index evaluation as well as field surveys and made it possible to identify new sources of material supply to the Brda catchment below the dam, thus identifying a disturbance in the sediment transport continuum in the catchment area. Research is a critical element in sustainable sediment management in the catchment, using a controlled sediment flushing operation and identifying local new sources of sediment supply. Stream bank erosion has been anecdotally identified as an important source of sediment in New Zealand catchments, however, there have been few attempts to quantify its contribution. Here we use a radionuclide-based sediment tracing approach to determine the relative contribution of stream bank- and hillslope-derived sediment within three catchments in the upper North Island of New Zealand. Both lithogenic (radium-226 and radium-228) and fallout radionuclides (caesium-137 and excess lead-210) were used to differentiate sediment derived from stream bank and hillslope sources. The relative contribution of stream banks and hillslopes to fluvially transported suspended sediment were predicted using a mixing model approach. Our results indicate that both fallout and lithogenic radionuclides provide good source differentiation. We demonstrate that stream bank erosion can contribute very high proportions of sediment within New Zealand catchments. We used independent assessments of bank erosion from each of the study catchments to support the sediment source fingerprinting results. Further work is required to determine the spatial and temporal variability of the contribution of sediment from stream banks. Information on the importance of different sediment sources is needed to target limited catchment rehabilitation resources where they will have the most impact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study is to evaluate the total sediment transport (suspended and bed load) in a Mediterranean river (Bellah, Tipaza, Algeria). To understand this study, we based our analysis on hydrometric data related to the instantaneous discharge and to the concentration of suspended sediment, over a period of 33 years (from 1974/75 to 2006/07). The results show that a good correlation between the suspended sediments and water discharge. The exponent b of our model is equal to 1.38, a value close to those found by researchers who worked in semi-arid region. The suspended sediment transport is about 610 t km-2 year-1. This value is comparable to those found in other regions with similar hydrologic regimes. The bed load is about 170 t km-2 year-1 for τ0 = γ × I × Rh t km-2 year-1 and it is about 115 t km-2 year-1 for τ0 = 0.7×γ × I × Rh. The total sediment transport is estimated at 725 t km-2 year-1 if we take into account the corrective coefficient of roughness in the bed of the wadi and equal to 780 t km-2 year-1 in other direction. To better judge our results, we compared them with those obtained by the relationship Tixeront which remains the most used for estimating the specific degradation in the basins of the Maghreb. The value obtained by the relation of Tixeront is slightly below our own values, but it is permissible to say that the results are of the same order of magnitude. The sediment composition of the seabed governs its mobility, hence determining sediment transport and morphological evolution of estuaries and tidal basins. Bed sediments often consist of mixtures of sand and mud, with spatial gradients in the sand/mud content. This study aims at increasing the understanding of processes driving the sediment composition in tidal basins, focusing on depositional processes. We show that bed sediments in the Wadden Sea tend to be either mud‐dominated or sand‐dominated, resulting in a bimodal distribution of the mud content where the two modes represent equilibrium conditions. The equilibria depend primarily on the sediment deposition fluxes, with bimodality originating from the dependence of suspended sand/mud concentrations on the local bed composition. Our analysis shows that bimodality is a phenomenon that is not only specific for the Wadden Sea; it can be expected for a wide range of suspended sediment concentrations and thus also in other systems worldwide. Plain Language Summary: The bottom of coastal seas is often composed of two sediment types, namely sand and mud. The evolution of the seabed, and thus of our coasts, depends on how these sediment types move. A correct representation of the spatial sand‐mud patterns in the bed is therefore essential if we want to understand and predict coastal evolution. Studying a large data set we found that sediment beds tend to be either sandy or muddy, with lower chances of finding something in between (i.e., bimodality). Although segregation of sand and mud has often been attributed to erosion processes, we found that this is mainly the result of depositional processes, and especially of the suspended sediment concentrations. Sand concentrations largely depend on local conditions, while local mud concentrations are much more affected by conditions elsewhere and/or earlier. The difference in the suspended sand and mud concentrations leads to multiple equilibria in the bed composition—resulting in the previously mentioned bimodality—for a very wide range of conditions. Therefore, we also expect bimodality and sharp sand‐mud transitions in other systems worldwide. The delta of the Mekong River is one of the largest in the world, with the Mekong River carrying a large amount of sediments in its Region of Freshwater Influence (ROFI). This study investigates the flow structure and movement of both suspended and bedload sediments in the ROFI of the Lower Mekong Delta (LMD) in order to identify areas prone to sediment accretion and erosion. This is accomplished by applying the three-dimensional Coastal and Regional Ocean COmmunity (CROCO) model and then calculating the sediment budget of different stretches of the coastline. The model outputs, depicting areas experiencing sediment accretion and erosion along the coastline of the LMD, are then compared against observations obtained during the period 1990–2015 and demonstrate the ability of the model to identify areas particularly prone to erosion and where preventive actions against coastal erosion should focus. A puzzling fact for the Partheniades-Krone formula is the adoption of very contrasting values for the empirical parameters (e.g., the erosion coefficient and the critical shear stresses) but satisfactory reproduction of the suspended sediment concentration (SSC). Here, a theoretical equation for the tidally-averaged equilibrium (TAE) condition is derived by setting the integrated erosion flux throughout a tidal period equivalent to the integrated deposition flux throughout the same tidal period, leading to a new constraint condition on these parameters if values of the TAE-SSC are available. A preliminary check using the measured data of the Yangtze Estuary shows that a larger critical shear stress for erosion would require a smaller critical shear stress for deposition, both of which must be enhanced if the erosion coefficient further increases. Contrasting sets of parameter values derived by this constraint are fed into a coupled hydro-sediment-morphodynamic model to simulate cohesive sediment transport in the Yangtze Estuary. The results confirm that very contrasting parameter values can indeed lead to satisfactory reproduction of the temporal variations of the SSC (e.g., those in July 2016, including both spring tide and neap tide). This is further demonstrated by the numerical modelling of cohesive sediment transport in an idealized symmetrical estuary. These results indicate that the TAE condition can be used as a constraint for determining the erosion coefficient and the critical shear stresses for erosion and deposition. In addition, two simplified equations of the bed sediment mass conservation (no erosion version and the no deposition version) are derived as complements for obtaining a unique set of the three parameter values, provided that the simultaneous measured time series of SSC, bed shear stress and bed level can be collected at the same gauging station. • Very contrasting erosion coefficient and critical shear stresses can lead to satisfactory reproduction of the SSC. • Tidally averaged equilibrium condition can constrain the estimation of the erosion coefficient and the critical shear stresses. • A larger critical erosion shear stress requires a smaller critical deposition shear stress for a given erosion coefficient. • An increase in the erosion coefficient requires enhancement of the critical shear stresses for both erosion and deposition. An important gap in the management of land erosion in mining‐affected areas is the understanding of the entire sediment routing system and the links between sources and storage at the catchment scale. In this study, we examine sediment delivery and its seasonality in the nickel mining‐affected Santa Cruz and Pamalabawan catchments in the Philippines. We monitored discharge, suspended sediment concentrations and suspended sediment loads across 13 sub‐catchments with contrasting degrees of mining influence from June 2018 to July 2019. First, we show the importance of the size of the area that has been physically disturbed within our sub‐catchments, with as little as 10–22% of relative disturbance area being enough to generate four‐fold to eight‐fold increase in the sediment yield relative to less disturbed and pristine areas. We found that sub‐catchments with > 10% disturbance exhibit the highest sediment yields (15.5 ± 44.7 t km−2 d−1) compared with sub‐catchments with < 10% disturbance (3.6 ± 17.7 t km−2 d−1) and undisturbed catchments (2.0 ± 5.7 t km−2 d−1). We also show that sediment flushing predominantly occurs in the most disturbed sub‐catchments at the onset of the wet season. A small number of flood events transports the bulk of the sediment, with hysteresis effects being most pronounced in disturbed areas. Lastly, we show that floodplain sediment recycling exerts a key control on sediment delivery at both reach and catchment scales, with the relative contribution of floodplain sources to the sediment budget becoming dominant in the latter stages of the wet season‐ up to 89% of the total sediment export per storm event. This study highlights the importance of both degree of disturbance and sediment pathways in controlling sediment transport in mining‐disturbed areas, and that considering the entire sediment routing system including intermediate stores is crucial to optimizing existing and future measures against siltation and potential contamination of trace metals and metalloids downstream of mining areas. However, in-situ observations of contour currents and their associated sedimentary processes were inadequate. Here, we present mooring observation results from a drift-moat contourite system in the South China Sea to gain insight into its sediment dynamics and formation mechanism. We found that quasi-persistent contour currents develop in the moat, on and below the drift, yet subject to diverse physical oceanographic processes. High suspended sediment concentrations observed on the drift mainly occur in winter, induced by high levels of sediments transported by contour currents from Taiwan. In the moat, however, high suspended sediment concentrations are mostly caused by erosion of the moat wall during periods of strong tidal currents and low shear variance. Such results underscore the complexity of current patterns and sedimentary processes across various topographic units in the drift-moat contourite system. A novel formation mechanism of the contourite drift is thereby proposed, wherein sediment transport by contour currents brings materials for constructing the drift, while its formation is driven by near-critical reflection and upslope transport of sediments by tidal currents. Suspended sediments (SSs) contribute to the maintenance of several ecosystems. However, intense soil erosion can lead to environmental, social, and economic impacts. South America (SA) has very high erosion and sediment transport rates. Here, we present a detailed description of the spatio‐temporal dynamics of natural SS flows in SA using the continental sediment model MGB‐SED AS. We evaluate the model with daily in situ data from 595 stations, information from regional studies and a global model. The model performance analysis showed that, in general, there was a better agreement between simulated and observed data than with the information found in regional studies and of the global model. The use of the hydrodynamic propagation method has allowed a better representation of sediment flows in rivers and floodplains. Based in the calibrated model results, SA delivers 1.00 × 109 t/year of SS to the oceans, in which the Amazon (4.36 × 108 t/year), Orinoco (1.37 × 108 t/year), La Plata (1.11 × 108 t/year), and Magdalena (3.26 × 107) rivers are the main suppliers. The floodplains play an essential role, retaining about 12% (2.40 × 108 t/year) of the SS loads reaching the rivers. In this study, data sets related to SS flows in SA were generated and can be used to support other large‐scale researches or policymakers and stakeholders for adequate management of continental land use. Meretrix meretrix (M. meretrix) are commonly found on tidal flats along the global coastlines. They are believed to potentially affect the sedimentary processes and thus morphological dynamics on the tidal flat. Their effects on sediment erosion and deposition, however, are not well quantitatively understood. To fill this gap, we conducted an integrated synchronous field investigation of hydrodynamic, sediment properties, and macrobenthos at two nearby tidal flats, one with abundant M. meretrix and the other without. In addition, seasonal comparison between summer and winter for the M. meretrix abundant site, where there was much less M. meretrix in winter than in summer, was conducted to further examine the influence of M. meretrix on critical value for the initiation of sediment entrainment. The results show that the critical shear stress for erosion (τ e) in the M. meretrix abundant site was lower than the bare tidal flat by ~23%. Differently, for the critical shear stress for deposition (τ d), the value at the M. meretrix abundant site was greater than that at the bare tidal flat by ~30%. Overall, we concluded that the existence of M. meretrix tends to enhance both the erodibility of the sea bed and the deposition of suspended sediment in the water column. It is suggested that the effect of macrobenthos on sediment erosion/deposition should not be neglected when predicting long-term morphological changes of an intertidal flat. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Overbank fine sediment deposition in the lower Oroua River leads to decreased flood capacity between stopbanks and increased flood risk. Identifying the dominant sources of erosion contributing to this deposited sediment can inform targeting of erosion management strategies most likely to reduce deposition. Sediment fingerprinting quantifies proportional contributions of catchment sources to suspended and deposited sediment transported downstream. Here, it is used to determine source contributions to recent overbank sediment deposits in the lower Oroua River, North Island, New Zealand. The analysis comprised six sources (channel bank; greywacke mountain range; hill subsurface; hill surface; mudstone; and, unconsolidated sand/silt) and two particle size fractions (< 63 µm and 125-300 µm) using bulk geochemical and radionuclide tracers. The dominant contributions to overbank deposition for the < 63 µm size fraction, which represents 42% of the deposits, are estimated to be from unconsolidated sand/silt (36 ± 8%) and hill subsurface (27 ± 8%), followed by channel bank (12 ± 12%), mudstone (11 ± 8%), hill surface (11 ± 6%), and greywacke mountain range (3 ± 4%). The overbank deposits for the 125-300 µm sediment fraction, which represents 28% of the deposits, show a different order of dominance with the largest contributions from hill subsurface (37 ± 7%) and channel bank (27 ± 10%), followed by mountain range (17 ± 10%), unconsolidated sand/silt (10 ± 7%), mudstone (7 ± 6%), and hill surface (2 ± 4%). Combining these two size fractions by their proportions in the overbank sediment provides an overall sediment source contribution of hill subsurface (31 or 38%), unconsolidated sand/silt (26 or 29%), channel bank (18%), mudstone (9 or 10%), mountain range (9 or 15 %), and hill surface (7 or 8%) (including/excluding channel bank, respectively). Hill subsurface, which represents shallow landslides in steep hill country, is a significant sediment source for both particle size ranges. Therefore, targeting erosion from this source is likely to have the most significant impact on sediment supply to overbank deposition. Differences in source contribution estimates for the two particle size fractions may reflect the composition of source material, variation in erosion and deposition processes, and discrimination challenges caused by channel bank sediment. These differences highlight the importance of accounting for particle size distributions when using sediment fingerprinting. Particle size also needs to be considered when implementing erosion management strategies because sources may have disproportionate downstream impacts depending on their particle size distribution and the aim of the mitigation. Specific sediment yield was estimated using sediment fingerprinting results distributed across a slope-weighted model of catchment outlet sediment yield. The highest specific sediment yield is from unconsolidated sand/silt (1,900 t km-2 yr-1), followed by mudstone (1,100 t km-2 yr-1) and hill subsurface (1,000 t km-2 yr-1). It is known that water erosion and their suspended sediments transport, generally in the Maghreb region and particularly in Algeria, record very high values; knowledge of these sediments is a very important step in planning erosion control measures. In this study, we modeled and quantified suspended sediment in the Ressoul wadi, Seybouse basin in northeastern Algeria. The study was carried out at different time scales, during a period of 32 years from 1968/69 to 1999/2000 by establishing regressions between the measured sediment concentration and the water discharge at the watershed outlet. The results obtained by the proposed method indicate that the use of two regressions based on means of discharge classes technique reveals very good estimation of the suspended sediment load in the Ressoul wadi, with an error of 3.04% and a specific average degradation transported to the downstream of the watershed of 316.45 t/km2/year in the period of 32 years. Sediment flux (SF) in the estuary is vital to the coastal and estuarine environment, especially the morphodynamical and ecological processes. However, its quantitative estimation with high accuracy is difficult because it is controlled by complex mechanisms and multiple processes. This study corrects the seasonal variations of the simulated suspended sediment concentration (SSC) by using GOCI-derived surface SSC and calculates the variations of SFs at the main cross-sections in and out of the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE). The results show that in 2013, 159 Mt and 143 Mt of sediments passed through Xuliujing hydrological station in YRE and estuarine mouth section, respectively. In the inner estuary, the significant seasonal variations of sediment transport are noted that the most seaward transport happens in summer (43.8%) and the least occurs in winter (7.3%). In the outer estuary, the southward transport towards Hangzhou Bay is the most critical pathway, accounting for 109.0% of total transport at mouth section, and is prevalent in autumn and winter. With considerations of sand mining and land reclamation, obviously erosions appear in the whole estuary during both 2013 and 2015. With stronger wind conditions in 2013, severer erosion (161 Mt) happens in outer estuary than that in 2015 (86 Mt). By combining the GOCI-derived surface SSC and the numerical model results, this study can better represent high-frequency hydro- and sediment-dynamical processes to calculate the annual, seasonal, and vertical SFs with improved accuracy. In the Geum River, a representative altered estuary, in-situ mooring and erosion experiments were conducted to reveal the effects of human-controlled discharge on benthic sediment disturbances. The strong discharge through the estuarine dam increased the current velocities within the benthic boundary layer (BBL) up to 79% and 153% during spring and neap tides, respectively. During the discharge period, the suspended sediment concentration in BBL was five times higher than that during the non-discharge period. During the flood phase, a critical shear stress for erosion (τ ce) was in the range of 0.1278 to 0.1391 Pa. Immediately after the ebb phase with strong discharge, τ ce increased to 0.1848 Pa, and the erosion rate (E) decreased from 33.73 to 14.81 mg m−2 s−1. The repetition of human-controlled discharge removed the erodible sediments within BBL, exposing the underlying consolidated sediment bed with low E and high τ ce. The results suggest that an altered estuary is vulnerable to benthic sediment erosion under combined natural and anthropogenic forcings. Ditch cleaning in drained peatland forests increases sediment loads and degrades water quality in headwater streams and lakes. A better understanding of the processes controlling ditch erosion and sediment transport in such systems is a prerequisite for proper peatland management. In order to relate hydrological observations to key erosion processes in headwater peatlands drained for forestry, a two-year study was conducted in a nested sub-catchment system (treated with ditch cleaning) and at two reference sites. The treated catchment was instrumented for continuous discharge and turbidity monitoring, erosion pin measurements of changes in ditch bed and banks and time-integrated sampling of suspended sediment (SS) composition. The results showed that ditch cleaning clearly increased transient suspended sediment concentrations (SSCs) and suspended sediment yields (SSYs), and resulted in temporary storage of loosely deposited organic sediment in the ditch network. After exhaustion of this sediment storage, subaerial processes and erosion from ditch banks became dominant in producing sediment for transport. Recorded SSCs were higher on the rising limbs of event hydrographs throughout the study period, indicating that SS transport was limited by availability of erosion-prone sediment. A strong positive correlation ( R2 = 0.84, p < 0.001) between rainfall intensity (above a threshold of 1 mm h−1) and average SSC obtained on the rising limb of hydrographs for the sub-catchment showed that soil detachment from ditch banks by raindrop impact can directly increase SSC in runoff. At the main catchment outlet, variation in SSC was best explained ( R2 = 0.67, p < 0.05) by the linear combination of initial discharge (−), peak discharge (+) and the lag time from initial to peak discharge (−). Based on these factors, ditch cleaning slightly increased peak discharges and decreased transit times in the study catchment. A post-fire watershed assessment to identify potential trouble spots for soil erosion and flooding can help land managers for decision-making on deploy mitigation, remediation measures, and restoration action plans. Predicting the potential impact of fires on runoff and soil erosion requires distributed hydrological modeling methods. This study used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), a rainfall-runoff model, to investigate the hydrological consequences of forest fires and their impact on sediment load under different burnt scenarios. For the pre-fire (baseline) scenario, the watershed is calibrated by using the measured discharge and suspended sediment concentration data from the weather station during the time step to estimate post-fire changes at the sub-catchment scale. The total water and sediment yield for the selected sub-catchment in the post-fire scenario with the highest spatial distribution of forest fire, due to the excessive surface runoff (an increase of 14.5%) increased significantly, resulted in 6.5 times increase in sediment yield. The results obtained from the study indicate a significant increase in sediment transport into the stream in the post-fire scenario. A large volume of soil losses occurred during the time step. In contrast, due to removing trees and vegetation from the ground, less evapotranspiration and infiltration occurred in selected sub-catchment areas after forest fires. In terms of watershed management, understanding the consequences of forest fires on hydrological services will be an effective method for sediment budget control. Therefore, applying the rainfall-runoff and erosion models for the watershed with developing plausible forest fire scenarios can be a productive method to deal with the threats and hydrological risks such as soil erosion and sediment transfer to the downstream environment. The flow routing module in several large-scale erosion and sediment transport models generally adopts simplifications that ignore important physical aspects of river dynamics. In this study we compare for the first time the results generated by a large-scale erosion and sediment transport model, using two different flow routing approaches: a combined Saint-Venant and Muskingum-Cunge method and the Inertial flow routing. For this assessment, simulations are performed with the MGB-SED model. We evaluate sediment characteristics such as suspended sediment load and concentration, floodplain effects, and the flux of suspended sediment within the Madeira River basin. The simulation with the inertial approach presents satisfactory results, similar to those achieved with the combined Saint-Venant approach for lowland rivers and the Muskingum-Cunge method for steeper rivers. Also, Inertial module is capable to represent the complex processes of the basin, but with easier preprocessing and numerical features, thus promising expanded capabilities for large-scale simulations. • Evaluation of the relative weights of the Saint-Venant equation terms. • Large-scale sediment model using inertial flow routing method. • The average percentage that is represented by the advective inertial term is 0.15%. • Similar results were achieved with full Saint-Venant equations for lowland rivers. Abstract: Appropriate descriptions of turbulence are important in predicting sediment transport and seabed evolution. We use here a three-dimensional model to investigate the impacts of sediment-induced stratification, erosion parameterization, and turbulence closures on sediment transport and morphological simulations. The model is implemented in the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory Coastal Ocean Modelling System (POLCOMS), which couples a hydrodynamic model to the General Ocean Turbulence Model (GOTM) and to a sediment transport model. This sediment transport model calculates both suspended sediment concentrations and bed evolution. A large number of turbulence closures can be tested and we focus on the methods used to calculate the turbulent length scale and the stability functions. Different modelling scenarios are assessed against experimental data of velocity profiles, suspended sediment concentrations, and trench migration in a laboratory flume. Numerical results show that the processes investigated have little impact on the flow velocity profiles, in spite of some differences on the bed shear stress. The only exception is the one-equation turbulence closure, which cannot reproduce velocity profiles appropriately. Sediment-induced stratification, erosion parameterization, and turbulence closures can all have significant impacts on the suspended sediment concentration and the bed evolution. Experiments have been carried out in a mobile-bed laboratory flume in order to study the sediment exchange process between the main channel and the groyne fields. The flume represented half the width of a schematized river reach with a series of groynes. The experiment was designed to represent typical dimensions of the Dutch River Waal at a geometrical scale of 1:100. The conditions were set to guarantee bed load as well as suspended load sediment transport. Conditions with submerged and emerged groynes were investigated. In addition to traditional measurements, viz., bed-level changes, suspended sediment concentrations, and flow velocities, bed-form propagation was measured in two dimensions using a the particle image velocimetry technique. The results were analyzed with focus on sediment exchange mechanisms and sediment transport patterns. The results demonstrate that under all flow conditions there is a net import of sediment into the groyne fields. The prevailing transport mechanisms vary with the flow stage: if the groynes are emerged it is mainly advection by the primary circulation cell, whereas if the groynes are submerged it is rather residual advection by large-scale coherent flow structures (in a straight reach). Ensemble-averaged suspended sediment concentrations (SSC) and transport from the swash zone of a high-energy beach are investigated with respect to the time-averaged setup level obtained from calibrated video records. Ensemble-averaged data indicate variability in SSC between both uprush and backwash during rising and falling tides. Mean ebb-tide SSC exceeds mean flood-tide SSC during both the uprush (by 28-34%) and backwash (by up to 25%). Suspended sediment concentration also varies between swash phases over a tidal cycle with mean uprush SSC exceeding mean backwash SSC by 46% to 108% depending on tidal level, with a general percentage decrease during the falling tide. The net ensemble-averaged transport (velocity-SSC product) magnitude displays a decreasing trend from roughly 30 to 20 kg m-1 during the rising tide and from roughly 45 to 15 kg m-1 during the falling tide that cannot be explained based on the percentage of foreshore immersion (water depth) alone. Thus, relative tidal level (cross-shore instrument position within the swash zone) and the phase of tide (rising or falling) within the swash zone play an important role in determining the magnitude of sediment suspension and transport. Local scour below a piggyback pipeline in steady currents is investigated numerically. A piggyback pipeline comprises two pipelines that are arranged in the so-called piggyback configuration with the small pipeline being located directly above the large pipeline. The Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations and the transport equation for suspended sediment concentration are solved using a finite element method. The bed scour profile is determined through solving sediment mass conservation equation. The numerical model is validated against experimental data available in literature on scour below a single pipeline. Computations are carried out for the diameter ratio [the small pipe diameter (d) to the larger one (D)] of 0.2 and the gap (G, between the two pipelines) to the large diameter ratio G/D ranging from 0.0 to 0.5. The interaction between fluvially transported, metal contaminated peat particulates and acidic waters draining peatland catchments has received limited attention. Potential in-stream processing of sediment-associated metals in acidic stream water was investigated in laboratory based mixing experiments, designed to represent conditions of fluvial sediment transport in a highly contaminated and severely eroding peatland catchment in the Peak District (UK). Over the initial 20 min of the first experiment, stream water Cr and Zn concentrations increased by at least an order-of-magnitude and remained elevated for the full duration (24 h) of the experiment. Stream water As, Mo, Pb, Ti and V concentrations increased between 43% (As) and 440% (V) over the first hour of the experiment. After 24 h most of the metals appeared to have reached equilibrium in the water column. Results of the second experiment revealed that when the concentration of metal contaminated peat particulates is increased, there is an associated increase in the stream water As, Cr, Mo, Pb, Ti, V and Zn concentrations. The experimental data suggest that As, Cr, Mo, Pb, Ti, V and Zn are liable to desorption from metal contaminated peat into acidic stream water. The solubilisation of contaminated peat particulates may also contribute to elevated stream water metal concentrations. The laboratory based approach used in this study may indicate that when there is erosion of metal contaminated peat into acidic fluvial systems there is a concomitant increase in dissolved metal levels, especially when suspended sediment concentrations are high. Further laboratory and field based experiments are required to evaluate the relative importance of physical and chemical processes in the interaction between contaminated peat particulates and stream water in peatland fluvial systems. Wildfire has been shown to increase erosion by several orders of magnitude, but knowledge regarding short-term variations in post-fire sediment transport processes has been lacking. We present a detailed analysis of the immediate post-fire sediment dynamics in a semi-arid basin in the southwestern USA based on suspended sediment rating curves. During June and July 2003, the Aspen Fire in the Coronado National Forest of southern Arizona burned an area of 343 km². Surface water samples were collected in an affected watershed using an event-based sampling strategy. Sediment rating parameters were determined for individual storm events during the first 18 months after the fire. The highest sediment concentrations were observed immediately after the fire. Through the two subsequent monsoon seasons there was a progressive change in rating parameters related to the preferential removal of fine to coarse sediment. During the corresponding winter seasons, there was a lower supply of sediment from the hillslopes, resulting in a time-invariant set of sediment rating parameters. A sediment mass-balance model corroborated the physical interpretations. The temporal variability in the sediment rating parameters demonstrates the importance of storm-based sampling in areas with intense monsoon activity to characterize post-fire sediment transport accurately. In particular, recovery of rating parameters depends on the number of high-intensity rainstorms. Deposition of suspended dust near eroding source fields can have detrimental effects on vegetation, as well as on soil and water quality. This study was undertaken to quantify dust deposition within 200 m of a source field during wind erosion events. Erosion was measured with BSNE samplers on a small field of Amarillo fine sandy loam at field at Big Spring, TX. Suspension-sized dust discharge averaged 33 ± 5 per cent of the total sediment discharge and ranged from 18.0 to 147.4 kg m-1 during eight selected storm events. Within 200 m of the source field boundary, dust collected in deposition samplers placed above a vegetated surface averaged 34 per cent of initial dust discharge. Predicted deposition, according to a line source model, was 43 per cent. Actual deposition was likely near that predicted, because of lateral diffusion of the dust and some under-sampling by the disk samplers. Thus, the line source model seems useful in estimating both the pattern and quantity of deposition. About 30 per cent of the suspended dust was deposited within the initial 50 m of vegetated surface, but only about 12-15 per cent was deposited in the initial 10 m. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the dynamic behavior of suspended sediment load transport at different temporal scales in the Mississippi River basin. Data corresponding to five successively doubled temporal scales (i.e. daily, two-day, four-day, eight-day and 16-day) from the St. Louis gaging station in Missouri are analyzed. The investigation is focused on identifying possible low-dimensional deterministic behavior in the suspended sediment load transport dynamics, with an aim towards reduction in model complexity. The correlation dimension method is used to identify low-dimensional determinism. The suspended sediment load dynamics are represented through phase-space reconstruction, and the variability is estimated using the (proximity of) reconstructed vectors in the phase space. The results indicate the presence of low-dimensional determinism in the suspended sediment load series at each of the five temporal scales, with the variables dominantly governing the dynamics in the order of three or four. These results not only suggest the appropriateness of relatively simpler models but also hint at possible scale invariance in the suspended sediment load transport dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Intensity and spatio-temporal variability of fluvial sediment transfers and mechanical fluvial denudation were analyzed in the periglacial Latnjavagge catchment (9km2; 950–1440m a.s.l.; 68.20N, 18.30E) in Arctic-oceanic northernmost Swedish Lapland. The present-day rates of fluvial sediment transfer are low. The mean annual mechanical fluvial denudation rate at the inlet of lake Latnjajaure, as calculated after five years of process monitoring (2000–2004), and excluding a “rare rainfall event” which caused 3.2 times higher suspended sediment transport during one day as compared to the total mean annual suspended sediment transport, is 2.3t km−2 yr−1. In years without “rare rainfall events”, most of the total annual sediment load is transported in a few days during annual snowmelt runoff. In the calculation of longer-term sediment budgets, rare rainfall events like the July 20th–21st, 2004 event have to be considered as essential components. Reliable estimation of the recurrence intervals of such events is problematic. The pattern of ice patches and snow fields within the valley, the steepness of streams and channels and the location of areas showing slushflow activity are the major factors controlling spatial variability of mechanical fluvial denudation in the drainage basin. The five lakes in Latnjavagge, especially lake Latnjajaure, are significant sediment traps and ground below 1300m a.s.l. is protected by a very stable and closed vegetation cover and rhizosphere across the entire lower catchment. Abstract: We have measured 238U–234U–230Th radioactive disequilibria in five size fractions of colloids and suspended sediments for four rivers from the Murray–Darling River basin (SE Australia). Continuous compositional trends of composition are observed for (234U/238U) and (230Th/238U) activity ratios over the range of size fractions studied. They are explained by the variable contribution of two components: detrital alumino-silicates and organic matter. Using relationships between activity ratios and the loss-on-ignition, it is possible to estimate the U-series isotopic composition of both detrital and organic end-members, which provide the best estimate for the composition of the true detrital phase (i.e. controlled only by the removal of elements through weathering) and the true dissolved phase (i.e. colloid-free), respectively. When performing a single filtration at 0.2 μm, it appears that size fractions > and <0.2 μm underestimate the disequilibrium in both the true detrital and dissolved phases, respectively. We show that erosion does not currently operate in steady state in the Murray–Darling basin and catchment soils are currently being degraded. This could be a consequence of the intensification of agriculture and deforestation over the past 100 yr. The residence time of sediments in the different sub-basins is calculated by computing the composition of the detrital phase with a continuous weathering model. It yields 11±2 kyr for the Darling River basin, only 2–3±1 kyr for the Murray River and 7±2 kyr for the Goulburn River. These values are correlated with the age of changes in river dynamics, in turn probably controlled by climate fluctuation, and indicate the age of the modern river system for each sub-basin. Abstract: The erosion behaviour of various fine-grained sediment deposits has been investigated in laboratory experiments. This work mainly focused on tests using sewer sediment in which strong biochemical reactions were observed during the deposit formation period. A small number of initial tests were conducted in which the deposits were made from mixtures of “clean” mineral and organic sediments. The erosion behaviour observed in these tests was compared with the erosion characteristics for sediments taken from deposits in a sewer. The impact of the biological processes on physical properties such as bulk density, water content, deposit structure and the erosive behaviour as a function of bed shear stress are quantified and discussed. Based on these observations it is believed that bio-processes weaken the strength of the in-pipe sediment deposits. A significantly weaker sediment surface layer was observed during deposition under quiescent oxygen-rich conditions. This resulted in a deposit with low shear strength which may be a cause of a first foul flush of suspended sediment when flow rates were increased. Comparison between tests with sewer sediments and the artificial representative surrogates suggested that the deposits of the later did not correctly simulate the depositional development and the resultant erosion patterns observed with the more bio-active sewer sediment. We present semi-analytical solutions for suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and residual sediment transport in a simple mathematical model of a short tidal embayment. These solutions allow us to investigate in some detail the characteristic tidal and semi-tidal variation of SSC and the processes leading to residual sediment transport, including settling and scour lags, the roles of ‘local’ and ‘advective’ contributions, and the presence of internally or externally generated overtides. By interpreting the transport mechanisms in terms of the classic conceptual models of settling lag we clarify how these models may be expressed in mathematical terms. Our results suggest that settling lag is usually a more important process than scour lag, and that a local model which neglects advection may predict the direction of net sediment transport incorrectly. Material from the bottom and banks of very shallow channels can be eroded due to current effects, producing suspended sediments that are transported by water movement. The problem with sediment transport in these systems can be dealt with using the transport equation, where the particle flow is calculated as a function of the sediment characteristics and of the flow itself. However, the parameters are complicated when the channels consist of cohesive matter. In this paper, a procedure based on the experimental determination of the parameters is proposed in which the erosion and deposit terms are valid for cohesive and non-cohesive silt. This method can be applied to those systems where suspended sediments originate mainly from the erosion and deposition of spring sources. The application of this method to the Sancti Petri Channel allows us, based on simultaneous recordings of current speed and concentration of sediments in suspension, to calculate the critical velocity for this system, which is formed by cohesive matter. The Sancti Petri tidal system is an inflow-outflow channel that extends from the inner zone of Cadiz Bay to the outlet to the Atlantic Ocean. Two-dimensional data of mean and sediment flow collected at a natural confluence of channels in the inner Bahía Blanca Estuary are presented. We describe the two-dimensional flow field to assess the role of changes in bed morphology occurring during transport-effective events on the structure of flow at a confluence; and to examine how the flow structure varies with changes in the ratio of momentum flux. At each station, vertical profiles of velocity, salinity, temperature and suspended sediment were obtained during the whole tidal cycle and residual fluxes were obtained. Lagrangean flux is higher than possible fresh water input, denoting an extra output of water which is the flux over the tidal flats along the southern and northern coasts of the channel. The effect of the junction produces a distortion of the vertical profile flow and in the suspended sediment transport. The effect of the particular conformation of the system makes necessary for consider the lateral effect of the tidal fiats in the circulation of the estuary which exerts a significant influence. The governing conservation equation for the transport of noncohesive suspended sediment in erodible channels is recognized as a stochastic partial differential equation due to the uncertainties in the parameters, and a deterministic ensemble-averaged equation is developed. Variables in this one-dimensional equation are represented as averaged quantities, and their covariances are also taken into account. Lateral inflows and deposition and entrainment of sediment are incorporated in the formulation. A hypothetical test problem is constructed to examine the model behavior. Manning’s coefficient, bed slope and bottom width are taken as the primary random parameters. Results from the solution of the ensemble-averaged equation are compared to results from Monte Carlo simulations. For comparison purposes, predicted values are also obtained by solving the deterministic transport equation without the covariance terms. It is found that predictions obtained from this latter approach deviate significantly from Monte Carlo simulation results. On the other hand, the ensemble-averaged predictions compare favorably to the Monte Carlo simulation results indicating that this promising technique needs further exploration. In this paper, the geometric characteristics of wave-induced offshore bars are investigated by using physical models. Both regular and irregular waves were used during the testing. Beach sand with a mean diameter of 0 35 mm and a specific gravity of 2.63 was selected for the study. The initial slope of the beach was 1:5. Different wave groups were generated over the initially flat beach, and a number of geometric parameters were determined. These parameters included the location of the bar crest, the equilibrium point, and the closure point. The results of the experimental study wore evaluated and some empirical expressions based upon the results are suggested to define those geometric parameters for pure regular waves, pure irregular waves and regular-irregular waves. The proposed formulas were compared with those of Silvester and Hsu (1997). These comparisons showed that a good correlation exists between the results of their earlier formulas and those of the proposed formulas derived for regular waves. It was also determined that the effect of wave types upon the bar crest is more than that of the equilibrium point. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

On a high-energy coast, with heterogeneous nearshore bathymetry and sediment dynamic (New Plymouth, New Zealand), two colours of artificial fluorescent tracer were used to i) investigate tbe sediment entrapment/bypassing of a port entrance, and ii) to monitor sediment movement from an experimental nearshore dredged-sand dump mound (47,000 m3). Two simultaneous releases lone for each colour) were made in 6 to 10 m water depths, near the port entrance and on the dump mound. 1400 m apart. Tbe tracer was tracked over 10 months by collecting and analysing 1179 surficial sediment samples, with concomitant wave/current recording at up to 13 nearshore sites. Tbe results demonstrate trapping in the breakwater tip-shoal of tbe part, by-passing and movement through the complex nearshore reef system. The dominant transport was alongshore. Tracer released near the port entrance depicted a natural sediment "pathway" past the harbour shipping entrance and over tbe rocky reefs to the beaches 4.5 km away. Very little tracer was detected within tbe harbour, indicating that tbe main transport from the release depths 16-10 ml by-passed tbe harbour entrance and tip-shoal. The tracer shows that only sediments very close to tbe harbour breakwater (i.e. within 100 m) are trapped at the harbour entrance. From the dump mound, tracer was observed to migrate mostly longshore away from tbe port, although a minor "updrift" migration was observed. The tracer results are in accordance with measured and numerically modeled currents, which show a dominant longshore flow away from the port and weak reversing flows in the quiescent lee of the harbour at the dump mound. The tracer data also suggest that the raised shore normal reefs do not present a significant impediment to longshore transport, but rather that the nearshore circulation patterns are the predominant influence on the .sediment transport vectors. Rates of tracer spreading were found to range from 0.095 to 0.288 m2s-1. which is consistent with a high-energy coastal environment. Diffusion and advection of suspended sediments is the primary mechanism of sediment transport, and tracer was found on beaches 4.5 km distant from the release point within 13 days of injection. Abstract: A series of sand bed experiments was carried out in the Large Wave Flume in Hannover, Germany as a component of the SISTEX99 experiment. The experiments focussed on the dynamic sediment response due to wave group forcing over a flat sand bed in order to improve understanding of cross-shore sediment transport mechanisms and determine sediment concentrations, fluxes and net transport rates under these conditions. Sediment concentrations were measured within the sheet flow layer (thickness in the order of 10 grain diameters) and in the suspension region (thickness in the order of centimetres). Within the sheet flow layer, the concentrations are highly coherent with the instantaneous near-bed velocities due to each wave within the wave group. However, in the suspension layer concentrations respond much more slowly to changes in near-bed velocity. At several centimetres above the bed, the suspended sediment concentrations vary on the time scale of the wave group, with a time delay relative to the peak wave within the wave group. The thickness of the sheet flow changes with time. It is strongly coherent with the wave forcing, and is not influenced by the history or sequence of the waves within the group. The velocity of the sediment was also measured within the sheet flow layer some of the time (during the larger wave crests of the group), and the velocity of the fluid was measured at several cm above the sheet flow layer. The grain velocity and concentration estimates can be combined to estimate the sediment flux. The estimates were found to be consistent with previous measurements under monochromatic waves. Under these conditions, without any significant mean current, the sediment flux within the sheet flow layer was found to greatly exceed the sediment flux in the suspension layer. A key element in a stream-monitoring programme for sediment transport is the choice of the measuring technique for suspended sediment concentration: this can highly affect both project costs and data reliability. The gravimetric method represents the standard analysis to directly measure suspended sediment concentration in a water sample. Indirect techniques are often employed for their inexpensiveness, although they need to be calibrated on gravimetric analysis results. In this study, the reliability of settleable solids in Imhoff cones was addressed as an alternative indirect method to estimate suspended sediment concentration (SSC), verifying the results with the turbidity measures of a laboratory nephelometer. The results show a high correlation of settled solids with suspended sediment concentration. Also, the results from the turbidimetric analysis showed a good correlation with SSC, but limited to water samples that did not need dilution. Measurements were repeated after storing the samples for 1 month: results exhibit an increase in turbidity and settleable solids, probably due to algae growth and anaerobic processes with the production of gases, causing an increase in matter. From our study, the Imhoff cone was shown to be a useful instrument to estimate suspended sediment concentration for the simplicity, the reliability and the low cost of their results. Abstract: We develop solutions for the transport of suspended sediment by a single swash event following the collapse of a bore on a plane beach, and we investigate the morphodynamical role that such transport may play. Although the intrinsic asymmetry between uprush and backwash velocities tends to encourage the export of sediment, we find that swash events may be effective in distributing across the swash zone much or all of the sediment mobilised by bore collapse; additionally, settling lag effects may promote a weak onshore movement of sediment. We quantify both effects in terms of the properties of the sediment and of the swash event, and comment on the relationship between our findings and recent field studies of swash zone sediment transport. The influence of suspended sediments on coherent flow structures has been studied by simultaneously measuring the longitudinal and vertical components of the instantaneous velocity vector and the instantaneous suspended particle concentration with an acoustic particle flux profiler. The measurements were carried out in clear water and in particle-laden open-channel flows. In both cases, they clearly show the predominance of ejection and sweep phases that are part of a burst cycle. The analysis further demonstrates the importance of the ejection and sweep phases in sediment resuspension and transport. Ejections pick up the sediment at the bed and carry it up through the water column close to the surface. It is shown that ejections and sweeps are in near equality in the near-bottom layer, whereas ejections clearly dominate in the remaining water column. In the absence of actual suspended sediment concentration (SSC) measurements, hydrologists have used sediment rating (sediment transport) curves to estimate (predict) SSCs for subsequent flux calculations. Various evaluations of the sediment rating-curve method were made using data from long-term, daily sediment-measuring sites within large (>1 000 000 km2), medium (<1 000 000 to >1000 km2), and small (<1000 km2) river basins in the USA and Europe relative to the estimation of suspended sediment fluxes. The evaluations address such issues as the accuracy of flux estimations for various levels of temporal resolution as well as the impact of sampling frequency on the magnitude of flux estimation errors. The sediment rating-curve method tends to underpredict high, and overpredict low SSCs. As such, the range of errors associated with concomitant flux estimates for relatively short time-frames (e.g. daily, weekly) are likely to be substantially larger than those associated with longer time-frames (e.g. quarterly, annually) because the over- and underpredictions do not have sufficient time to balance each other. Hence, when error limits must be kept under ±20%, temporal resolution probably should be limited to quarterly or greater. The evaluations indicate that over periods of 20 or more years, errors of <1% can be achieved using a single sediment rating curve based on data spanning the entire period. However, somewhat better estimates for the entire period, and markedly better annual estimates within the period, can be obtained if individual annual sediment rating curves are used instead. Relatively accurate (errors <±20%) annual suspended sediment fluxes can be obtained from hydrologically based monthly measurements/samples. For 5-year periods or longer, similar results can be obtained from measurements/samples collected once every 2 months. Cores of overbank deposits were collected from locations along the Rivers Swale and Aire in Yorkshire, U.K. The middle and lower reaches of the River Aire drain heavily industrialized and urbanized areas, whereas the River Swale drains a predominantly rural catchment, although Pb and Zn mining in the headwater areas in the 19th century introduced contaminated sediment. Downcore changes in the heavy and trace metal (Al, Cr, Cu, K, Pb, Sr and Zn) and phosphorus (P) content of the floodplain sediment were used to provide evidence of temporal changes in the contaminant content of the fine-grained sediment transported by the study rivers over the last ca. 100 years. The core collected from the downstream site on the River Aire shows upcore increases in P content, which reflects the expansion of the urban area during this period. Variations in the metal content of the deposited sediment over the period represented by the core reflect changes in the extent and type of industrial activity in the catchment. For the cores from the River Swale, there are no major upcore changes in the P content of the sediment, but there was a period characterized by increased levels of Pb and Zn which can be linked to metal mining activities. • First validation of a daily large-scale sediment model using remote-sensing data. • Remotely-sensed reflectance can help sediment dynamics modeling in ungauged basins. • Better spatiotemporal sediment patterns using surrogate observations. Sediment models are important for estimating soil erosion, sediment transport, and deposition at different scales and for disparate scenarios; however, the availability of in-situ measurements may not be sufficient for the appropriate evaluation of model performance. For this reason, this study investigated how surrogate data (water quality [WQ] and remote sensing) could be used as a proxy for suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in order to evaluate the performance of a large-scale erosion and sediment transport model. To achieve this, the daily SSC was simulated, using the Large Scale Sediment Model (MGB-SED), a semi-distributed and conceptual model in which the Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation (MUSLE) is used to estimate sediment yield and an advection-diffusion equation is used to route suspended loads along rivers. Four experiments were performed that compared simulated SSC against: (1) in-situ SSC; (2) turbidity; (3) total suspended solids (TSS); and (4) surface spectral reflectance (SSR). Correlation analysis showed that r -values above 0.5 were found in 62%, 91%, 89% and 83% of the SSC, turbidity, TSS and SSR stations, respectively. Spatially, the model was evaluated in smaller drainage areas, using WQ data. Temporally, the number of SSR observations was greater than the number of in-situ measurements, allowing a better analysis of the temporal dynamics of the simulated SSC. Also, the SSR data improved the spatial coverage and could be employed for even large-scale, ungauged basins. These results bring a new perspective to the application of sediment models in poorly or ungauged basins, since surrogate data can improve the spatial and temporal suspended sediment coverage when compared to traditional SSC measurements, which is a common issue in large-scale sediment modeling. Compared with arable land, there is a paucity of field-based measurements of erosion rates and controls for lowland temperate grassland supporting ruminant agriculture. Despite this evidence gap, reducing diffuse fine sediment pollution from intensively farmed grassland has been recognised as essential for improving compliance with water quality targets. Improved information on erosion rates and controls within intensively managed lowland grazing livestock systems are prerequisites for informing best management practices for soil and water resource conservation. Accordingly, this study assembled such information using the North Wyke farm platform in south west England where flow, suspended sediment concentration, rainfall and soil moisture are monitored quasi-continuously in 15 hydrologically-isolated (1.54–11.12 ha) catchments. This region of the UK is representative of temperate lowland ruminant grazing landscapes with semi permeable soil drainage. Catchment area was the major control on both water and sediment flux. When normalised to catchment area, sediment yields were controlled by the erodibility of the catchment's soils. Ploughing for re-seeding of grass swards was the major factor that affected this. Whilst total rainfall had a small effect on sediment yields, slope and the damage of soils by livestock had no significant effects. This finding may be due to the overriding effects of ploughing and re-seeding of some fields during the study period. Detachment by impacting raindrops mobilised sediment particles across the entire field with diffuse saturation-excess overland flow responsible for their transport. The majority of erosion occurred during the rising limbs of storm events when there is an abundance of easily detached soil particles. Given that erosion and sediment transport are driven mechanistically by processes affecting the entire field areas, a reduction in sediment yield through the implementation of highly spatially-targeted in-field management such as that for feeder ring use, troughs, poached tracks or gateways would likely be very challenging. Instead, stocking density and grazing regime management, as well as carefully planned ploughing and re-seeding will be more beneficial for erosion control. • Water and sediment fluxes were strongly correlated with catchment area. • Sediment yields significantly increased after ploughing. • Rainsplash detached particles whilst saturation-excess overland flow transported them. • No significant effect of slope or soil poached by livestock on sediment generation was found. • The entire areas of each catchment are likely to be contributing sediment to the flumes.
