Natural bedrock rivers exhibit diverse erosional morphologies. Although the formation of alternate bars on bedrock has been noted in previous studies, the influence of these alternate bars on bedrock erosion has not been clarified. In this study, the authors propose a model for bedrock-alluvial channels that reproduces both bar formation and erosional morphology. In addition, the authors report on numerical simulations to evaluate the influence of sediment supply on the state of the bed at and over the bedrock surface. The numerical results illustrate the formation of different morphologies for different supply rates. When the sediment supply rate is close to transport capacity, mixed alluvial-bedrock alternate bars form. These bars are analogous to purely alluvial alternate bars. A meandering thread of alluvial material migrates downstream over a uniformly eroding bedrock surface. When the sediment supply rate is well below capacity, however, multiple incisional troughs (grooves) form on the bedrock surface, and alluvial cover tends to concentrate in the troughs. Mar del Plata Harbor is an important center for the fishery industry in Argentina, and it has become an attractive site for international tourism because of the recent construction of a cruiser ship terminal. However, further development of this port halted several years ago because of the recurrent sedimentation problems in the access channel and basins. This site is characterized by advancement of the shoreline south of the harbor and a sandbank that develops across the access channel, while downdrift erosion and the associated shoreline retreat are due to partial blockage of the sediment transport caused by the harbor breakwaters. The mechanisms responsible for these sedimentation and erosion processes are examined using a coastal area morphological modeling system, MIKE 21/3 Coupled Model Flexible Mesh, developed by DHI. The morphological model was calibrated and validated against measured bathymetric changes. The model was then applied to a medium-term simulation with particular interest in the assessment of the effectiveness of re-establishing the design depth of the access channel through dredging. This morphological modeling allowed enhanced understanding of the main hydrodynamic and sedimentological processes occurring around the harbor entrance, as well as obtainment of information potentially useful for maintenance dredging. It was determined for the present hydrosedimentological conditions that the sandbank moves toward the access channel with high sedimentation rate. This means the navigation channel requires regular maintenance dredging or the construction of additional sediment retention interventions such as sediment traps, extension of the breakwater(s), etc. The efficiency of any intervention from the point of view of reducing sediment deposition at the harbor access should be verified before its implementation. In all cases, the northward transport would still be blocked, so artificial sediment bypass should be considered to protect the beaches north of the harbor. El puerto de Mar del Plata es un importante centro para la industria pesquera en Argentina y se ha convertido en un lugar atractivo para el turismo internacional debido a la reciente construcción de una terminal de cruceros. Sin embargo, el desarrollo de este puerto se encuentra detenido hace varios años debido a persistentes problemas de sedimentación en su canal de acceso y dársenas. Debido a la obstrucción parcial del transporte de sedimentos que provoca la escollera Sur del puerto, el área costera se caracteriza por el avance de la línea de costa aguas arriba, el desarrollo de un banco de arena a través del canal de acceso y significativos procesos de erosión en las playas ubicadas al Norte del puerto. Los mecanismos responsables de estos procesos fueron evaluados mediante el Sistema de Modelación Morfológica MIKE 21/3 de malla flexible desarrollado por la empresa DHI. El modelo morfológico fue calibrado y validado mediante relevamientos batimétricos realizados en el entorno del acceso portuario. El modelo fue aplicado con una simulación a mediano plazo (tres años), con especial interés en la evaluación de la eficacia que tendría una obra de dragado para restablecer la profundidad de diseño del canal. Esta modelación morfológica permitió una mayor comprensión de los principales procesos hidrodinámicos y sedimentológicos que ocurren alrededor de la entrada del puerto, así como la obtención de información potencialmente útil para el diseño de estructuras y la planificación del dragado de mantenimiento. Se determinó que para las presentes condiciones hidrosedimentológicas el banco de arena se mueve hacia el canal de acceso con altas tasas de sedimentación, por lo cual requiere un mantenimiento regular, o la construcción de obras complementarias tales como trampas de sedimentos, espigones, la extensión de la Escollera Sur, etc. Desde el punto de vista de la reducción de la sedimentación, la eficacia de cualquier intervención debe ser verificada antes de su aplicación. En todos los casos, el transporte de sedimentos siempre será bloqueado, con lo cual debe considerarse el bypass artificial de arena con el fin de proteger las playas ubicadas al norte del puerto. The 1999 jökulhlaup at Sólheimajökull was the first major flood to be routed through the proglacial system in over 600 years. This study reconstructed the flood using hydrodynamic, sediment transport and morphodynamic numerical modelling informed by field surveys, aerial photograph and digital elevation model analysis. Total modelled sediment transport was 469 800 m3 (+/- 20%). Maximum erosion of 8.2 m occurred along the ice margin. Modelled net landscape change was -86 400 m3 (+/- 40%) resulting from -275 400 m3 (+/- 20%) proglacial erosion and 194 400 m3 (+/- 20%) proglacial deposition. Peak erosion rate and peak deposition rate were 650 m3 s-1 (+/- 20%) and 595 m3 s-1 (+/- 20%), respectively, and coincided with peak discharge of water at 1.5 h after flood initiation. The pattern of bed elevation change during the rising limb suggested widespread activation of the bed, whereas more organisation, perhaps primitive bedform development, occurred during the falling limb. Contrary to simplistic conceptual models, deposition occurred on the rising stage and erosion occurred on the falling limb. Comparison of the morphodynamic results with a hydrodynamic simulation illustrated effects of sediment transport and bed elevation change on flow conveyance. The morphodynamic model advanced flood arrival and peak discharge timings by 100% and 19%, respectively. However, peak flow depth and peak flow velocity were not significantly affected. We suggest that morphodynamic processes not only increase flow mass and momentum but that they also introduce a feedback process whereby flood conveyance becomes more efficient via erosion of minor bed protrusions and deposition that infills or subdues minor bed hollows. A major implication of this study is that reconstructions of outburst floods that ignore sediment transport, such as those used in interpretation of long-term hydrological record and flood risk assessments, may need considerable refinement. A novel two-dimensional, physically based model of soil erosion and sediment transport coupled to models of hydrological and overland flow processes has been developed. The Hairsine-Rose formulation of erosion and deposition processes is used to account for size-selective sediment transport and differentiate bed material into original and deposited soil layers. The formulation is integrated within the framework of the hydrologic and hydrodynamic model tRIBS-OFM, Triangulated irregular network-based, Real-time Integrated Basin Simulator-Overland Flow Model. The integrated model explicitly couples the hydrodynamic formulation with the advection-dominated transport equations for sediment of multiple particle sizes. To solve the system of equations including both the Saint-Venant and the Hairsine-Rose equations, the finite volume method is employed based on Roe's approximate Riemann solver on an unstructured grid. The formulation yields space-time dynamics of flow, erosion, and sediment transport at fine scale. The integrated model has been successfully verified with analytical solutions and empirical data for two benchmark cases. Sensitivity tests to grid resolution and the number of used particle sizes have been carried out. The model has been validated at the catchment scale for the Lucky Hills watershed located in southeastern Arizona, USA, using 10 events for which catchment-scale streamflow and sediment yield data were available. Since the model is based on physical laws and explicitly uses multiple types of watershed information, satisfactory results were obtained. The spatial output has been analyzed and the driving role of topography in erosion processes has been discussed. It is expected that the integrated formulation of the model has the promise to reduce uncertainties associated with typical parameterizations of flow and erosion processes. Abstract: The paper introduces a 2D shallow water model based on a two-phase formulation for the analysis of fast geomorphic transients occurring in the context of river morphodynamics. Mass and momentum conservation principles are separately imposed for both phases. The model naturally accounts for non-equilibrium solid transport, since neither instantaneous adaptation hypothesis nor any lag equation is employed to represent sediment dynamics. The hyperbolic character of the proposed model is shown to be preserved independently on the flow conditions. Results from numerical simulations of both 1D and 2D test-cases are compared with literature experimental data and with available numerical solutions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Devastating tsunami waves can mobilize a substantial amount of coastal sediments and change the coastal morphology considerably. In this study, laboratory experiments were performed in a wave flume to investigate the changes of beach profile and mean grain size caused by tsunami-like waves that have a front similar to that of a solitary wave and an undulating tail following the wave front. A composite slope was constructed using a mixture of two sizes of sand. In addition to recording the wave rush-up and rush-down processes using video cameras, measurements were also made on water surface elevation, bed profile and the final size distribution of the sand mixture for three water depths. The results showed that sand suspension and erosion were caused mainly by sheet flows when water retreats from the beach, whereas the offshore sandbars, composed mainly of coarser sand, formed mainly from the run-down jumps caused by the collapsing of retreating water with waves in the undulating tail. The findings of this study have the potential to assist researchers in understanding nearshore tsunami flows from tsunami deposits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Previous work in the Gulf of Lions (western Mediterranean Sea) has suggested that significant amounts of sediment escape through the western part of this tectonically passive margin, despite it being far removed from the primary sediment source (the Rhone River, ∼160km to the NE). The primary mechanism behind this export is hypothesized to be the interaction of a regional, southwestward sediment-transport path with a canyon deeply incising the southwestern part of the shelf, Cap de Creus Canyon. To understand the pattern of off-shelf sediment export from the western Gulf of Lions, and more specifically, the role of Cap de Creus Canyon in this transport, box cores were collected within the canyon and on the adjacent shelf during five cruises from November 2003 to April 2005. Geochronology (210Pb-derived accumulation rates), grain-size distributions, and sedimentary structures (X-radiography) were analyzed to assess temporal and spatial sedimentation patterns. Results indicate two mid-shelf depocenters (30–90m water depth) in the northern and southern portions of the study area, separated by a zone of bypassing due to current acceleration around a headland (Cap Bear). Estimates of a sediment budget indicate that ∼6–8% of the sediment input to the Gulf is sequestered on the shelf region. Within the Cap de Creus Canyon, there is a significant spatial asymmetry in both grain size and accumulation rates. The northern flank is a modern depocenter of fine-grained sediments, while the southern flank is primarily non-depositional for mud and includes locations of apparent erosion. This suggests the influence of multiple oceanographic processes supplying sediment to the canyon: advection of nepheloid layers from the northern rim that provide a relatively continuous sediment supply (over decadal timescales), and episodic strong currents affecting the southern rim, which can scour sediment from the southern flank. The mid-depth thalweg has an ephemeral mud layer, overlying sand and consolidated mud. The mud layer appears to be flushed down canyon periodically. The canyon head contains coarse material, suggesting reworked sands may be entering. The 100-year sediment budget, based on accumulation rates for the fine-grained fraction in the upper canyon, indicates that ∼1% of the total sediment input to the Gulf is accumulating in upper Cap de Creus Canyon. However, this number may significantly underestimate the total sediment entering the canyon because water-column measurements show that sediment is likely moving through the upper canyon during major dense-water cascading events from the shelf and being deposited deeper in the canyon system. The ephemeral mud layer also indicates rapid deposition and frequent flushing of sediment through the upper canyon. Overall, this study shows that Cap de Creus Canyon is an active conduit of sediment past the shelf break, despite its location distal to the primary sediment source to the Gulf. The mouth of the Seine River estuary (France) has undergone marked morphological evolution over several decades mainly due to engineering works aimed at improving access to Rouen and Le Havre harbours. The intertidal areas are decreasing in size and the lower estuary is accumulating sediment and prograding. In order to understand and better describe the major morphological behaviours of the estuary, a morphodynamic numerical model was developed within the Seine-Aval program. At the end of the 1st part of the research program, a validated fine sediment transport model (3D) was available (Le Hir et al., b). As the present morphological study addresses medium-term issues (a few decades), and because of the need to investigate impacts of local structures or events, we chose to use the so-called “process-based approach” starting from the existing model. First, the existing model was upgraded to account for (suspended) sand transport, and to achieve coupling between morphological changes and sediment transport. Erodability of the sediment accounts for the respective proportions of mud and sand. Simulations starting from an arbitrary surficial sediment cover show that the model is able to reproduce realistic sediment patterns. For example, it is able to change the sediment nature on the intertidal flat near Le Havre from sand to mud. Observed structures of suspended sediment are also reproduced: fine particles mainly follow the turbidity maximum whereas significant concentrations of sand grains in suspension are found where the hydrodynamic stresses are intense. Concerning morphodynamics, simulations with real forcing over one year are discussed. The effect of waves on the bathymetric evolution of the mouth is shown and the sensitivity of morphodynamics to the coupling procedure is tested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
