Cutting-edge technology for fluvial monitoring has revolutionised the field, enabling more comprehensive data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Traditional monitoring methods were limited in their spatial and temporal resolutions, but advancements in remote sensing, unmanned aerial systems (UASs), and other innovative technologies have significantly enhanced the fluvial monitoring capabilities. UASs equipped with advanced sensors enable detailed and precise fluvial monitoring by capturing high-resolution topographic data, generate accurate digital elevation models, and provide imagery of river channels, banks, and riparian zones. These data enable the identification of erosion and deposition patterns, the quantification of sediment transport, the evaluation of habitat quality, and the monitoring of river flows. The latter allows us to understand the dynamics of rivers during various hydrological events, including floods, droughts, and seasonal variations. This manuscript aims to provide an update on the main research themes and topics in the literature on the use of UASs for river monitoring. The latter is achieved through a bibliometric analysis of the publication trends and identifies the field's key themes and collaborative networks. The bibliometric analysis shows trends in the number of publications, number of citations, top contributing countries, top publishing journals, top contributing institutions, and top authors. A total of 1085 publications on UAS monitoring in rivers are identified, published between 1999 and 2023, showing a steady annual growth rate of 24.44%. Bibliographic records are exported from the Web of Science (WoS) database using a comprehensive set of keywords. The bibliometric analysis of the raw data obtained from the WoS database is performed using the R software. The results highlight important trends and valuable insights related to the use of UASs in river monitoring, particularly in the last decade. The most frequently used author keywords outline the core themes of UASs monitoring research and highlight the interdisciplinary nature and collaborative efforts within the field. "River", "topography", "photogrammetry", and "Structure-from-Motion" are the core themes of UASs monitoring research. This study assessed historical morphology changes of the Msimbazi River in Dar es Salaam City, Tanzania, following heavy rainfall events using historical Google earth images. The erosion and sedimentation processes that cause morphological changes of a river are also associated with flooding within the river catchments. In this study, the bank-line movement, erosion and sedimentation areas and changes in river section width were analyzed under three-time periods: 2005-2012, 2012-2018, and 2018-2020. Data shows that, the timing for floods coincides with the historical records for heavy rains. It was found that, area in the upper reaches of the river such as Kinyerezi suffer from river bank erosion most, as indicated by the large increase in river width. This has resulted into washing away of infrastructure including houses and loss of land. The river channel width at Kinyerezi has widened a lot since 2005, with some sections having widths of more than 90 m. On the lower reaches for example around Kigogo and Jangwani areas, deposition of the soil materials prevails, resulting into raised river bed and reduced river widths. As the river section an hence carrying capacity is reduced, inundation of river banks occurs. This is among the causes of river bank flooding reported at these areas whenever there is a heavy storm event. It is therefore recommended that interventions to solve the flooding events in Dar es Salaam city should also include preventing catchment and river bank erosion on the upstream areas. Background In order to regulate water flow, hydraulic structures such as weirs or checks, frequently equipped with gates, are used. Water can flow below or over the gate or, simultaneously, over and below the gate. Both diversifications of hydraulic gradient, being an effect of damming up a river by the structure and shear stresses at the bed, which exceeds the critical shear stress value, invoke the local scouring downstream the structure. This phenomenon has been studied in laboratory and field conditions for many years, however Researchers do not agree on the parameters that affect the size of the local scour and the intensity of its formation. There are no universal methods for estimating its magnitude However, solutions are sought in the form of calculation formulas typical for the method of flow through the structure, taking into account the parameters that characterize a given structure. These formulas are based on factors that affect the size of the local scours, that is, their dimensions and location. Examples of such formulas are those contained in this article: Franke (1960), Straube (1963), Tarajmovič (1966), Rossinski & Kuzmin (1969) equations. The need to study this phenomenon results from the prevalence of hydrotechnical structures equipped with gates (from small gated checks to large weirs) and from potential damage that may be associated with excessive development of local erosion downstream, including washing of foundations and, consequently, loss of stability of the structure. Methods This study verifies empirical formulas applied to estimate the geometry parameters of a scour hole on a laboratory model of a structure where water is conducted downstream the gate with bottom reinforcements of various roughness. A specially designed remote-controlled measuring device, equipped with laser scanner, was applied to determine the shape of the sandy bottom. Then the formula optimization is conducted, using Monte Carlo sampling method, followed by verification of field conditions. Results The suitability of a specially designed device, equipped with laser scanner for measuring the bottom shape in laboratory conditions was demonstrated. Simple formula describing local scour geometry in laboratory conditions was derived basing on the Straube formula. The optimized formula was verified in field conditions giving very good comparative results. Therefore, it can be applied in engineering and designing practices.

Understanding Earth surface responses in terms of sediment dynamics to climatic variability and tectonics forcing is hindered by limited ability of current models to simulate long-term evolution of sediment transfer and associated morphological changes. This paper presents pyBadlands, an open-source python-based framework which computes over geological time (1) sediment transport from landmasses to coasts, (2) reworking of marine sediments by longshore currents and (3) development of coral reef systems. pyBadlands is cross-platform, distributed under the GPLv3 license and available on GitHub (). Here, we describe the underlying physical assumptions behind the simulated processes and the main options already available in the numerical framework. Along with the source code, a list of hands-on examples is provided that illustrates the model capabilities. In addition, pre and post-processing classes have been built and are accessible as a companion toolbox which comprises a series of workflows to efficiently build, quantify and explore simulation input and output files. The channel boundary conditions along the Lower Yellow River (LYR) have been altered significantly since the 1950s with the continual reinforcement and construction of both main and secondary dykes and river training works. To evaluate how the confined complex channel-floodplain system of the LYR responds to floods, this study presents a detailed investigation of the relationship between the tempo-spatial distribution of sedimentation/erosion and overbank floods occurred in the LYR. For large overbank floods, we found that when the sediment transport coefficient (ratio of sediment concentration of flow to flow discharge) is less than 0.034, the bankfull channel is subject to significant erosion, whereas the main and secondary floodplains both accumulate sediment. The amount of sediment deposited on the main and secondary floodplains is closely related to the ratio of peak discharge to bankfull discharge, volume of water flowing over the floodplains, and sediment concentration of overbank flow, whereas the degree of erosion in the bankfull channel is related to the amount of sediment deposited on the main and secondary floodplains, water volume, and sediment load in flood season. The significant increase in erosion in the bankfull channel is due to the construction of the main and secondary dykes and river training works, which are largely in a wide and narrow alternated pattern along the LYR such that the water flowing over wider floodplains returns to the channel downstream after it drops sediment. For small overbank floods, the bankfull channel is subject to erosion when the sediment transport coefficient is less than 0.028, whereas the amount of sediment deposited on the secondary floodplain is associated closely with the sediment concentration of flow. Over the entire length of the LYR, the situation of erosion in the bankfull channel and sediment deposition on the main and secondary floodplains occurred mainly in the upper reach of the LYR, in which a channel wandering in planform has been well developed. The purpose of the paper is to test forecasting of the sediment transport process, taking into account two main uncertainties involved in sediment transport modeling. These are: the lack of knowledge regarding future flows, and the uncertainty with respect to which sediment transport formula should be chosen for simulations. The river reach chosen for study is the outlet part of the Ner River, located in the central part of Poland. The main characteristic of the river is the presence of an intensive morphodynamic process, increasing flooding frequency. The approach proposed here is based on simulations with a sediment-routing model and assessment of the hydraulic condition changes on the basis of hydrodynamic calculations for the chosen characteristic flows. The data used include Digital Terrain Models (DTMs), cross-section measurements, and hydrological observations from the Dabie gauge station. The sediment and hydrodynamic calculations are performed using program HEC-RAS 5.0. Twenty inflow scenarios are of a 10-year duration and are composed on the basis of historical data. Meyer-Peter and Müller and Engelund-Hansen formulae are applied for the calculation of sediment transport intensity. The methodology presented here seems to be a good tool for the prediction of long-term impacts on water surface profiles caused by sediment deposition and erosion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we modified and applied an open source CFD software package, the TELEMAC, to simulate sediment transport and bed morphology on a meandering stretch of Nakdong River, between Gangjeong and Dalsung Weirs, whose length is about 20 km. The numerical simulations have been carried out on a High Performance Computing Cluster (HPC) with the real river bathymetry and with different operation scenarios of the weirs. The hydrodynamic parameters and bed evolutions obtained from the numerical results have been validated against field observation data. River channel sediment dynamics are important in integrated catchment management because changes in channel morphology resulting from sediment transfer have important implications for many river functions. However, application of existing approaches that account for catchment-scale sediment dynamics has been limited, largely due to the difficulty in obtaining data necessary to support them. It is within this context that this study develops a new, reach-based, stream power balance approach for predicting river channel adjustment. The new approach, named ST:REAM (sediment transport: reach equilibrium assessment method), is based upon calculations of unit bed area stream power (ω) derived from remotely sensed slope, width and discharge datasets. ST:REAM applies a zonation algorithm to values of ω that are spaced every 50 m along the catchment network in order to divide the branches of the network up into relatively homogenous reaches. ST:REAM then compares each reach's ω value with the ω of its upstream neighbour in order to predict whether or not the reach is likely to be either erosion dominated or deposition dominated. The paper describes the application of ST:REAM to the River Taff in South Wales, UK. This test study demonstrated that ST:REAM can be rapidly applied using remotely sensed data that are available across many river catchments and that ST:REAM correctly predicted the status of 87.5% of sites within the Taff catchment that field observations had defined as being either erosion or deposition dominated. However, there are currently a number of factors that limit the usefulness of ST:REAM, including inconsistent performance and the need for additional, resource intensive, data to be collected to both calibrate the model and aid interpretation of its results. Complex relationships between stream functions and processes make evaluation of stream modification projects difficult. Informed by vague objectives and minimal monitoring data, post-construction project evaluations can often be a subjective attribution of success or failure. This article provides a simple framework to rapidly describe the degree of damage in stream modification projects performed in constrained settings. Based on widely accepted evaluations of physical habitat quality and stream stability, the damage states framework describes a continuum of damage in multiple categories that relate natural stream functions to the often desired state of static equilibrium. Given that channel form is closely related to stream function, it follows that changes to the channel form result in changes in function. The damage states focus on damage to flow hydraulics, sediment transport and channel equilibrium, hydraulic, and geomorphic parameters that describe basic stream functioning and support higher level functions in the modified channel. Purpose: Using Ells River, Alberta, Canada bed sediments, this study aims to determine (1) the erosion, transport, and deposition characteristics of cohesive bottom sediments, and (2) the influence of the microbial community in this regard. Materials and methods: A 2-m annular flume was used to generate bed shear to assess cohesive sediment dynamics for eroded beds with consolidation/biostabilization periods of 1, 3, and 7 days. Additional optical particle sizing, image analysis, densitometry, and microbial analysis were employed to further the analysis with respect to bed erosion and eroded floc characteristics. Results and discussion: Sediment dynamics can influence the benthic and planktonic community health within aquatic systems. The critical bed shear stress for erosion increased from 0.05 to 0.19 Pa (for 1- to 7-day runs). Consolidation (dry density) increased with time and depth and eroded biofilm biomass was observed to increase with time. The community structure of the eroded sediment did not change with time suggesting a stable well-established and highly selected community. Hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria were present within the microbial consortium. The sediment was highly hydrophobic (96 %) due to a high natural oil content which likely had a profound effect on sediment dynamics, flocculation, and sediment cohesion. Eroded sediment settled poorly, which will result in the long-range transport of associated contaminants. Conclusions: The Ells River possesses some unique properties which should be considered when assessing contaminant source, fate, and effect. The most significant of these are small floc size, the hydrophobicity of the sediment, and the biological community as these were found to be influential in both the erosion and flocculation processes. It is important that any management strategies and operational assessments of reclamation strategies that may have implication on river health incorporate the sediment compartments (SS and bed sediment), biology, and the energy dynamics within the system in order to better predict the downstream flux of sediments. This article shows the results of the hydrologic analysis of watersheds of rivers Sinú, Aracataca, and Foundation. The characteristics and variability of river inputs (flow and sediment transport) and historical trends to identify regional patterns in fluvial dynamics were evaluated. Records of flow and sediment transport were taken of the Institute Hydrologic and Studies Environmental (IDEAM), to perform a statistical analysis of the time series of sediment transport and flow. Sediment transport and stream flow, were show highly dependent, while the dual-mass curves helped to identify the influence of external factors on sediment transport. The dynamic of the basins Fundación and Aracataca, showed maximum events with return periods of 2 and 10 years, while the Sinú River fluvial dynamics was maintained regular due to the influence URRÁ dam. Since 1992, efforts have been conducted in Goodwater Creek Experimental Watershed to assess suspended sediment transport from this 73 km2 watershed located in the Salt River Basin, Missouri, USA. This effort was complemented by assessment of field-scale sediment loss and of suspended sediment transport at 12 watersheds in the Salt River Basin. The database includes 10 to 20 years of data from 3 fields ranging from 7 to 35 ha, and 5 to 20 years of data from 15 stream sites ranging from 10 to 6200 km2. Abstract: Indian River Inlet is located at roughly the mid-point of the Atlantic coast of Delaware and connects the ocean to two Delaware inland bays. Jetties constructed in 1940 have maintained the inlet for navigation purposes but have also acted as a barrier to net northerly alongshore sediment transport causing downdrift erosion. A mobile, land-based bypassing system was initiated in 1990 in an effort to counteract this erosion. Beach profile data from 1985 (pre-bypassing) until 2008 are used to investigate the effect of the sand bypassing system on beaches adjacent to the inlet. The downdrift beach experienced horizontal shoreline erosion between 10 and 60m during the pre-bypassing period but accreted 10–20m during the bypassing period. The mean shoreline location on the updrift beach during bypassing is 10–20m landward (erosion) of its position during the pre-bypassing period. Empirical orthogonal function (EOF) amplitudes from analyses performed on mean-removed elevation surfaces during the periods of highest bypassed volume (average of 83% of design rate) showed that the influence of the bypassing system on the downdrift beach extends to about 1500m of the inlet. An EOF analysis showed that different morphologic responses were evident following the initiation of bypass operations. Temporal variations of shoreline and beach morphology were correlated to the temporal variations in bypassing rates on the downdrift beach only. The downdrift beach response was greatest near the inlet for larger bypassing volumes. Correlation in these instances occurred with a roughly 1-year time lag suggesting that the beach quickly redistributes the bypassed sand. EOF amplitude and shoreline response are weakly correlated to bypassed volumes when the system bypassed smaller volumes (average of 56% of design rate) of sand suggesting that there is a minimum bypassing rate, regardless of yearly variability, below which the effect on the downdrift beach is obscured. Abstract: Analysis of typhoon- and earthquake-triggered landsliding and fluvial response in the Tachia River, central Taiwan, documents highly episodic sediment supply over decade to century timescales. Landslide data from the Chi-Chi earthquake (1999) and subsequent typhoons (2001, 2004, and 2005) quantify the sediment supply from these events. Fluvial response was investigated by decadal-scale and century-scale longitudinal river profile data spanning 1904 to 2008 and by sediment delivery recorded in suspended sediment load and reservoir sedimentation data. Our results show that the different time periods of satellite images and aerial photographs used in previous studies make it difficult to unambiguously identify the causes of landslides previously attributed by some studies to the effects of the Chi-Chi earthquake rather than subsequent high intensity precipitation. In response to significant variability in sediment delivery from hillslopes, century-scale profile variation data indicate substantial bed surface elevation change of 2.6±6.7m, and decade-scale bed surface elevation change of 1.1±3.3m. Since 1993, the downstream reaches incised in response to bedload sediment trapping by reservoirs while headwater reaches aggraded in response to increased sediment delivery from uplands. A tremendous increase in reservoir sedimentation after 2000 likely reflects the effects of the highest decade-average daily rainfall since 1900. Suspended sediment load data indicate a post Chi-Chi earthquake increase in sediment concentration in low-flow events but do not exhibit the clear influence on sediment yields at higher flows as (e.g., typhoons) reported by others for fluvial response in the epicentral region. Abstract: Knowledge of the weathering processes controlling continental transfer of dissolved silicon (DSi) to the ocean is fundamental to the estimate of the long-term atmospheric CO2-budget. Studies at the soil profile and catchment scales demonstrate that the Si isotopic composition of soil and riverine DSi is a marker of abiotic and/or biotic weathering processes. In this paper, we first review Si isotopic fractionation in the natural environment. We then evaluate the application of Si isotopes to gain new insights into weathering processes on distinct spatial and temporal scales. We suggest that bulk soil δ30Si is inversely correlated to weathering degree, regardless of variability in climate, soil age and lithology. We also posit that the Si isotopic composition of DSi and suspended matter in rivers is indicative of the weathering regime (weathering- vs. transport-limited) prevailing in the area where DSi flux originates. Abstract: This contribution presents a model approach to simulate the erosion, entrainment, deposition, and burial of the surface fine-grained laminae (SFGL) in low-gradient streams. We hypothesized that SFGL transport acts as a geomorphic control of the erosion and transport of sediment sources in a bedrock-controlled, low-gradient stream with fluvial deposits located in central Kentucky, USA. Results indicate that the SFGL development and temporary storage on the streambed surface plays a key role in maintaining an equilibrium streambed. The SFGL provides an easily erodible sediment source that satisfies the transport capacity of the stream during low to moderate flow events and thus protects deeper streambed sediment and streambank sediments from erosion. Modeling results showed that the simulation period was characterized by low to moderate hydrologic events which flush the SFGL from the stream and high flow events which deposit fine sediments into the SFGL. During the former, transported sediments were dominated by sediments of SFGL origin, i.e., 89% of sediments. During the latter, 33% of sediment input to the stream is deposited to the SFGL, which shows its importance as a temporary sink. Our model results support a novel concept that the ephemeral SFGL layers can satisfy sediment transport capacity of flow at low to moderate flows and thus protect other sources from erosion. While perhaps the bedrock, low-gradient stream studied provides an end-member to SFGL control, future research might investigate the importance of SFGL control in other stream systems. Abstract: The tropics of northern Australia have received relatively little attention with regard to the impact of soil erosion on the many large river systems that are an important part of Australia''s water resource, especially given the high potential for erosion when long dry seasons are followed by intense wet season rain. Here we use 137Cs concentrations to determine the erosion processes supplying sediment to two major northern Australian Rivers; the Daly River (Northern Territory), and the Mitchell River (Queensland). We also present data from five sediment samples collected from a 100km reach of the Cloncurry River, a major tributary of the Flinders River (Queensland). Concentrations of 137Cs in the surface soil and subsurface (channel banks and gully) samples were used to derive ‘best fit’ probability density functions describing their distributions. These modelled distributions are then used to estimate the relative contribution of these two components to the river sediments. Our results are consistent with channel and gully erosion being the dominant source of sediment, with more than 90% of sediment transported along the main stem of these rivers originating from subsoil. We summarize the findings of similar studies on tropical Australian rivers and conclude that the primary source of sediment delivered to these systems is gully and channel bank erosion. Previously, as a result of catchment scale modelling, sheet-wash and rill erosion was considered to be the major sediment source in these rivers. Identifying the relative importance of sediment sources, as shown in this paper, will provide valuable information for land management planning in the region. Summary: This study evaluated the potential impacts of sub-bankfull flows produced by stormwater control measures (SCMs) on stream geomorphic stability. In part, design standards for SCMs include peak flow attenuation to maintain pre-development flow conditions to those of undeveloped watersheds or return urbanized, developed watersheds back to the pre-developed state. Most SCMs target lower frequency storms, usually the 2-and/or 10-year discharge events, but leave peak flows resulting from higher frequency storms uncontrolled. SCMs are possibly subjecting streams to longer and more frequent periods of erosion, increasing stream channel instability. The d 65 substrate size, pattern, profile, and dimension of 33 reference stream cross-sections in Piedmont North Carolina were modeled using the continuous simulations program, SWMM, to develop (1) a unit critical discharge metric in L/s/ha, Qc =0.0035(d 65)1.5048, (2) allowable annual erosional hour standard, Log(AAEH)=−1.26Log(d 65)+1.21, and (3) allowable volume of eroded bedload standard, Log(AV)=−0.64(Qc )−1.52, for watersheds containing SCMs discharging into surface waters. The unit critical discharge represents a threshold that, once exceeded, incipient motion of the d 65 particle can occur. These standards represented benchmarks of stable, naturally eroding reference streams. Ninety-four percent of the unit critical discharges were less than the 2-year 24-h event, indicating the necessity of controlling higher frequency sub-bankfull flows. The standards were applied to an urbanized watershed (one sub-catchment containing a structural SCM and two sub-catchments without) in Raleigh, North Carolina. The unit critical discharge metric appeared to adequately represent urbanized stream geomorphic processes for the sub-catchment undergoing urbanization (4.5% difference) but not for the mature urbanized sub-catchments (47.5% and 68.8% difference). Depending on the long-term management goal of the unstable stream, this metric is not applicable for all urbanized watersheds due to the discrepancy between the field and calculated unit critical discharges. Standards developed from urbanized reference streams could possibly better represent SCMs in urbanized watersheds. All three sub-catchments failed to meet the erosional standards demonstrating the ability of the standards to predict unstable geomorphic processes in streams. The addition of a detention SCM (wet pond), in the urbanized sub-catchment extended the duration of erosive flows from 37 to 87h/ha/yr, but reduced the estimated volume of eroded bedload from 1.81 to 0.99m3/m/ha/yr when compared to uncontrolled urbanization (no wet pond). Alterations to the design of the wet pond, increased volume size and change in orifice diameter, were explored to see if erosional standards could be better met. This study demonstrated the effect of current SCM design standards on stream stability and why geomorphic processes of stream channels should be incorporated in SCM design standards. ABSTRACT Previous analyses have identified the active width of braided rivers, the bed area over which bed load flux and short-term morphological change occurs, as an important element of braiding dynamics and predictions of bed load flux. Here we compare theoretical predictions of active width in gravel-bed braided rivers with observations from Sunwapta River, and from a generic physical model of gravel braided rivers, to provide general observations of the variation in active width, and to develop an understanding of the causes of variation. Bed topography was surveyed daily along a 150 m reach of the pro-glacial Sunwapta River for a total of four weeks during summer when flow was above threshold for morphological activity. In the laboratory, detailed digital elevation models (DEMs) were derived from photogrammetric survey at regular intervals during a constant discharge run. From the field and flume observations there is considerable local and circumstantial variation in active width, but also a general trend in average active width with increasing discharge. There is also a clear relationship of active width with active braiding index (number of active branches in the braided channel network), and with dimensionless stream power, which appears to be consistent across the range of data from field and physical models. Thus there is a link between active width and the river morphology and dynamics, and the possibility of a general relationship for estimating active width from channel pattern properties or reach-scale stream power values, from which approximate bedload flux calculations may be made. The analysis also raises questions about differences between hydraulically-based numerical model computations of instantaneous active width and observation of time-integrated morphological active width. Understanding these differences can give insight into the nature of bedload transport in braided rivers and the relationship to morphological processes of braiding. Many rivers in Taiwan have steep slopes, are subject to typhoon-induced flood flows, and contain soft bedrock that is exposed at many locations and easily erodible. The occurrence of extensive bedrock erosion has been a major threat to river infrastructure at many locations. Soft bedrock erosion, therefore, is an important process to consider for river projects in Taiwan. In this study, bedrock erosion models are reviewed. A specific model is proposed by combining two existing models incorporating both the hydraulic and abrasive scour mechanisms. The proposed bedrock erosion model is incorporated into a two-dimensional mobile-bed model, and the integrated model is tested by simulating bedrock erosion downstream of the Chi-Chi weir on the Choshui River in Taiwan. A calibration study is performed to determine appropriate values of the model parameters based on two and a half years of measured data. The model is then assessed based on a verification study that compares model predictions of bedrock erosion of the same reach to two additional years of measured data. Abstract: Our understanding about the regional variation of Sediment Yield (SY) in Europe and its scale dependency currently relies on a limited number of data for mainly larger river systems. SY is the integrated result of all erosion and sediment transporting processes operating in a catchment and is therefore of high value for environmental studies and monitoring purposes. Most global assessments of SY consider catchment area (A), climate and topography as the main explanatory variables. However, it is still unclear if these factors also control regional variations of SY within Europe. This paper aims at bridging this gap. Therefore, we i) present a large database of SY-values which was constructed through an extensive literature review; ii) describe the spatial patterns of SY across Europe; and iii) explore its relation with A, climate, and topography. In total, sediment yield data from 1794 different locations throughout Europe were collected (507 reservoirs and 1287 gauging stations), representing a minimum of 29,203 catchment-year data. Only SY-data measured at gauging stations or derived from reservoir siltation rates over a period of a minimum of one year were included in the database. This database comprises a large range of catchment areas (A): i.e from small upland catchments (≥0.01km²) to major European river basins (≤1,360,000km²). An overview of the collected SY-data is provided and sources of uncertainty on the available data are discussed. Despite potentially large uncertainties on several of the individual SY-values, analysis of this database indicates clear spatial patterns of SY in Europe. The temperate and relatively flat regions of Western, Northern and Central Europe generally have relatively low SY-values (with ca. 50% of the SY< 40tkm−2 yr−1 and ca. 80% of the data <200tkm−2 yr−1), while Mediterranean and Mountainous regions generally have higher SY-values (with around 85% of the SY-data >40tkm−2 yr−1 and more than 50% of the data >200tkm−2 yr−1). These differences are attributed to a combination of factors, such as differences in climate, topography, lithology and land use. Although larger differences in SY were found between the climatic regions than between topographic zones, it is currently difficult to identify the individual importance of the various controlling factors of SY. SY–A relationships were calculated for the entire dataset and for subgroups stratified according to the measurement method (gauging stations or reservoir surveys), range of the catchment area, climatic region, topographic zone of the river outlet, and major European river system. Although typically a negative relationship between SY and A is expected due to a decrease in topsoil erosion rates on more gentle slopes and an increase in sediment deposition with an increase in catchment size, this relationship was found to be generally very weak and subject to a lot of scatter. Furthermore, results illustrate important differences in scale dependency: whereas a weak but significant negative trend is generally observed for the temperate and relatively flat regions, no significant or even positive trends were observed in mountain regions and Mediterranean Europe. When only larger river catchments (i.e. >100km² and especially >10,000km²) are considered, catchment area exerted a larger control on SY. Growing awareness of the wider environmental significance of fine sediment transport by rivers and associated sediment problems linked to sediment-water quality interactions, nutrient and contaminant transfer, and the degradation of aquatic habitats has resulted in the need for an improved understanding of the mobilization and transfer of sediment in catchments to support the development of effective sediment management strategies. The sediment budget provides a key integrating concept for assembling information on the internal functioning of a catchment in terms of its sediment dynamics by providing information on the mobilization, transfer, storage and output of sediment. One key feature of a catchment sediment budget is the relationship between the sediment yield at the catchment outlet and rates of sediment mobilization and transfer within the catchment, which is commonly represented by the sediment delivery ratio. To date, most attempts to derive estimates of this ratio have been based on a comparison of the measured sediment yield from a catchment with an estimate of the erosion occurring within the catchment, derived from an erosion prediction procedure, such as the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) or its revised version, RUSLE. There is a need to obtain more direct and spatially distributed evidence of the erosion rates occurring within a catchment and to characterize the links between sediment mobilization, transfer, storage and output more explicitly. In this context, fallout radionuclides have proved particularly useful as sediment tracers. This paper reports the results of a study aimed at exploring the use of caesium-137 (Cs) measurements to establish sediment budgets for three catchments of different sizes and contrasting land use located in Calabria, southern Italy. Long-term measurements of sediment output were available for the catchments, and, by using the estimates of gross and net rates of soil loss within the catchments provided by Cs measurements, it was possible to establish the key components of the sediment budget for each catchment. By documenting the sediment budgets of three catchments of different sizes, the study provides a basis for exploring the effects of scale on catchment sediment budgets and, in particular, the increasing importance of catchment storage as the size of the catchment increases. Sediment transport between the emerged land masses and deep marine basins is a fundamental process that affects the exploitation of resources and protection of the environment and its ecosystems. Sediment transport models on the continental shelf are often very complex and subject to semiempirical or empirical equilibrium transport equations that relate sediment fluxes and turbulence to physical properties such as velocity, depth, and characteristic bed-load sediment particle sizes. In engineering applications, errors in these physical properties affect the accuracy of the sediment fluxes. The present analysis details the importance of physical properties to the bed-load fluxes and suggests which parameters have more influence on the final result by providing insight into the relative strengths, weaknesses, and limitations of all the selected 52 bed-load equations for noncohesive particles (sand and gravel are treated separately). Various parameters were first investigated individually to pinpoint the key physical properties that control the errors. Because the existence of strong nonlinearity in most bed-load transport equations precludes analytical approaches, the multilinear regression (MLR) method was used to validate this analysis. Several graphs are presented to emphasize the influencing effect of those parameters that were either used directly or embedded in these equations. The most significant parameters that directly influence the sand particles are θ, ds, and vav, and the embedded parameters are sfτo, θds, and Sfθ. Downward seepage (suction) increases the mobility of the channel. In this study, experimental investigations were carried out to analyse the suction effect on stream power along the downstream side of the flume. It was observed that stream power has a major influence on the stability and mobility of the bed particles, due to suction. Stream power is found to be greater at the upstream side and lower at the downstream side. This reduces the increment in the mobility of the sand particles due to suction at the downstream side. Thus, there is more erosion at the upstream side than the downstream side. It was also found that the amount of deposition of sand particles at the downstream side, because of the high stream power at the upstream side, is greater than the amount of erosion of sand particles from the downstream side. The Wairau River is one of the most engineered river systems in the Marlborough region. Historical river control works, particularly the blocking of the Opawa Breach and the subsequent construction of the Wairau Diversion, have had a significant impact on flow and sediment transport in the Lower Wairau. Currently, the Lower Wairau is aggrading as a result of an increase in sediment concentration and a decrease in the duration for which flows exceed the critical threshold to keep sediment entrained. These changes are attributable to the substantial reduction in flow in the Lower Wairau that is a result of over half the total Wairau flow now passing down the Wairau Diversion. During the previous period, following the blocking of the Opawa Breach up until the construction of the Wairau Diversion, the opposite occurred, with significant increases in flow down the Lower Wairau and widespread erosion. This paper reviews the geomorphic setting of the Wairau deposition zone and the impacts of the Opawa Breach and the Wairau Diversion on the Lower Wairau by examining historical cross-sectional data (1927 to present) and assessing the distinct flow and sediment transport regimes driving the aggradation and erosion. Abstract: This paper details the historical coastal evolution of the Columbia River littoral cell in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Geological data from A.D. 1700 and records leading up to the late 1800s provide insights to the natural system dynamics prior to significant human intervention, most notably jetty construction between 1885 and 1917. All reliable surveys, charts, and aerial photos are used to quantify decadal-scale changes at the three estuary entrances and four sub-cells of the littoral cell. Shoreline, bathymetric, and topographic change over three historical intervals—1870s–1920s, 1920s–1950s, and 1950s–1990s—are integrated to provide an understanding of sediment-sharing relationships among the littoral cell components. Regional morphological change data are developed for alongshore segments of approximately 5km, enabling comparisons of shoreline change to upper-shoreface and barrier volume change within common compartments. The construction of entrance jetties at the Columbia River (1885–1917) and Grays Harbor (1898–1916) has profoundly affected the evolution of the littoral cell, and has accentuated the morphological coupling between the inlets, ebb-tidal deltas, shorefaces, and barriers. The jetties induced erosion of the inlets and offshore migration of ebb-tidal deltas. The change in boundary conditions at the entrances enabled waves to rework the flanks of ebb-tidal deltas and supply enormous quantities of sand to the adjacent coasts. Over several decades the initial sand pulses have been dispersed alongshore up to tens of kilometers from the estuary entrances. Winter waves and coastal currents produce net northward sediment transport across the shoreface while summer conditions tend to induce onshore sediment transport and accumulation of the upper shoreface and barriers at relatively high rates. Historical shoreline progradation rates since jetty construction are approximately double the late prehistoric rates between 1700 and the 1870s. Erosion rates of the mid- to lower shoreface to the south of the jettied estuary entrances have typically been greater than the accumulation rates of the upper shoreface and barrier, suggesting that the lower shoreface has been an important source of littoral sediments over decadal and longer time scales. Until recent decades, sediment supply from the ebb-tidal delta flanks and lower shoreface has largely masked the decline in Columbia River sediment supply resulting from flow regulation and dredging disposal practices. With the contemporary onset and expansion of coastal erosion adjacent to the jettied estuary entrances, proper management of dredged sediment is imperative to mitigate the effects of a declining sediment budget. Abstract: The impact of unusual events on the sediment dynamics in rivers is discussed in this paper. The increase in the number of extreme precipitation events and other unusual weather events in Norway strongly suggests that weather conditions are changing. It is difficult to monitor sediment transport during large magnitude floods. It is however well known that they may deliver substantial amounts of sediment. The suspended sediment load in the upper Atna river during the springflood in 1995 was 44 times the mean load measured during the preceding years. The recurrence interval of this flood was estimated to be 100–200 years. The conditions during the occurrence of a particular flood event may also be of considerable importance and measurements during rainfall on frozen ground have indicated unusually high runoff and erosion rates. The seasonal distribution of runoff in several parts of Norway has changed in recent years and higher winter temperatures have produced an increase in the frequency of flood events. A very long lasting flood caused by a prolonged period of rain occurred in the Vikka stream during September to December 2000. The availability of sediment increased with the increasing soil moisture content in the area. As the ground became saturated, more active slope processes caused erosion rates to increase markedly. The combined effects of climate change and human impact on sediment transport in rivers appear to enhance downstream sediment delivery. Flood protection works along river channels prevent sediment from being deposited on the floodplain. River channels that have been lowered in order to reduce groundwater levels in agricultural floodplain areas will experience the same effect. During the last decade extensive ecological changes have taken place in the coastal areas of southern Norway as 90% of the sugar kelp forest has been lost. An experimental study was conducted to determine the influence of length, width, and protrusion of noncontinuous riprap protections on shear failure conditions. The incipient motion of particles as a failure criterion and the reference transport method as the threshold of motion were used. In each test, riprap transport rates were measured at different time intervals using a sediment trap placed immediately downstream from the test reach so that time dependence could be well described. Results reveal that incipient motion conditions of transverse (cross-sectional) protections are strongly influenced by both the protrusion and length of bed protection, which indicates that stability significantly increases as protection length increases and decreases as protrusion increases. In the case of longitudinal protections, almost the same failure conditions were found as in the case of continuous protection. Furthermore, these conditions are unrelated to the width of the protection. A coefficient to correct design formulas obtained by other authors is proposed to take into account the effect of the geometry of transverse protections on their stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a review to a study that assesses the potentially increased levels of fine river sediments and their effects on gravel-spawning brown trout in Alpine countries. Evaluation was done to know the effect of sediments, brown trout reproductive needs, and impacts of sediment on brown trout health. Data showed that the health and behavior of fishes were affected by high amounts of suspended sediments. Erosions and fine sediment going to rivers are expected to increase in future.

Abstract: A numerical model suitable for the reproduction of bed evolution in natural alluvial rivers and in channels of complex geometry is presented. It is based on a conservative formulation of one-dimensional shallow water equations, which includes an original treatment of the momentum equation source term. The proposed model has already been cross referenced with several test cases and experimental data found in the literature for fixed beds. In this study, however, the focus is on mobile bottom beds. The selected test cases are representative of some of the characteristic bed configurations that often occur in natural streams, and, therefore, are suitable for verifying the versatility of the model and its potential usefulness in the treatment of alluvial rivers. The MacCormack explicit finite difference scheme has been adopted for the numerical implementation. The liquid and solid phases are then solved by means of a semi-coupled procedure. A variety of bed evolution mechanisms and different water regime conditions are investigated in order to verify the model response in the cases of erosion, deposition and bed morphology evolution. The results show a good correspondence with the experimental data. Furthermore, the proposed model shows a notable numerical stability even when applied to test cases that are particularly difficult under the numerical computational profile, where the relative model of the standard formulation of the conservative balance equations shows evident numerical instability. Identification of sediment sources and associated nutrients and contaminants is crucial to the ecological management of aquatic systems. A combination of geochemical and radionuclide tracing techniques and geostatistical modelling have been used to determine the primary source areas of fine sediment delivered to the Maroochy River estuary. The application of radionuclide (137Cs and 210Pb) techniques indicate that approximately 70% of the sediment in the Maroochy River estuary originates from subsoil erosion. An average of 60% of sediment in the lower estuary originates from soils developed on the Landsborough Sandstone, with 35% coming from soils developed on granitoids. In the mid-Maroochy River estuary major contributions of fine sediment come from soils developed on Landsborough Sandstone (38%) and granitoids (36%). Estimated sediment residence times in the Maroochy River estuary are generally less than 30 years, however, one sample site near the estuary mouth had an estimated residence time of at least 30 years. This indicates that sediment accumulation rates in mangroves along the estuary margins are relatively low. Results from this study will be used by catchment managers to better target remedial action to reduce fine sediment delivery to the Maroochy River estuary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study on the longitudinal distributions of river flood power using the methodology called combined automated flood, elevation and stream power (CAFES). The methodology which has international applicability for understanding basin-scale hydraulics, erosion, and sediment transport was used in quantifying downstream changes in a river flood power. The data from the NEXTMap Britain digital elevation model was used to calculate flood power, which were linked with the median annual flood. The problems encountered in testing Lawler's downstream change models including the difficulty in defining downstream trends, along with the results for five rivers are discussed.

Abstract: A dynamical model is proposed to study sediment transport in river networks. A river can be divided into segments by the injection of branch streams of higher rank. The model is based on the fact that in a real river, the sediment-carrying capability of the stream in the th segment may be modulated by the undergone state, which may be erosion or sedimentation, of the th and th segments, and also influenced by that of the th injecting branch of higher rank. We select a database about the upper-middle reach of the Yellow River in the lower-water season to test the model. The result shows that the data, produced by averaging the erosion or sedimentation over the preceding transient process, are in good agreement with the observed average in a month. With this model, the steady state after transience can be predicted, and it indicates a scaling law that the quantity of erosion or sedimentation exponentially depends on the number of the segments along the reach of the channel. Our investigation suggests that fluctuation of the stream flow due to random rainfall will prevent this steady state from occurring. This is owing to the phenomenon that the varying trend of the quantity of erosion or sedimentation is opposite to that of sediment-carrying capability of the stream. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The paper reports on an experimental investigation concerning two important issues: (1) local scour and (2) riprap stability at a 45° wing-wall abutment in a degrading river bed of noncohesive sediment. The abutment considered was short (that is abutment length/flow depth <1). From the experimental observations, no influence of abutment inclusion on bed degradation was evident, as bed profiles with and without abutment were quite identical apart from the immediate vicinity of the abutment. Total scour depth at an abutment is found to be the maximum abutment scour depth in addition to the reduction of bed elevation due to bed degradation. The maximum abutment scour depth can be estimated from the equation given by Kandasamy and Melville in their 1998 paper. For scouring time beyond 24 h, the local abutment scour depth remains independent of time. In a degrading bed, the bed forms cause edge failure of the riprap at an abutment when the dunes propagate over the riprap layer. Initially, the dune height is significant causing the maximum damage of riprap layer. As the flow velocity reduces, the resulting bed-shear stress diminishes with the degrading bed and gradually the formation of dunes ceases. An additional experiment reveals that the damaged riprap layer is significantly vulnerable against a subsequent flood accompanied by large dunes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A two-dimensional depth-averaged model was used for the simulation of scour and deposition in sand-bed meandering channels with fixed banks. The model employs unstructured meshes based on triangular elements and incorporates the effects of curvature-induced helical flow and transverse bed slope in the direction of bed-load sediment transport. The model was tested using experimental data from a well-known laboratory curved channel and a full scale meandering river. The numerical results agreed well with observed data, demonstrating that the model can reproduce the main features of bed profiles along meandering rivers, such as the formation of point bars and pools. Siltation and subsequent biological impairment is a national problem prompting state regulatory agencies to develop sediment total maximum daily loads (TMDL) for many streams. To support TMDL targets for reduced sediment yield in disturbed watersheds, a critical need exists for stream assessments to identify threshold concentrations of suspended sediment that impact aquatic biota. Because of the episodic nature of stream sediment transport, thresholds should not only be a function of sediment concentration, but also of duration and dose frequency. Water quality sondes can collect voluminous amounts of turbidity data, a surrogate for suspended sediment, at intervals that can be used to characterize concentration, duration, and frequency of elevated turbidity events. To characterize turbidity sonde data in an ecologically relevant manner, a methodology for concentration-duration-frequency (CDF) curves was developed using turbidity doses that relate to different levels of biological impairment. To illustrate this methodology, turbidity CDF curves were generated for two sites on Little Pigeon River in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee, using over 30,000 sonde data measurements per site for a one-year period. Utilizing a Poisson arrival approach, turbidity spikes were analyzed stochastically by observing the frequency and duration of recorded events over a turbidity level that relates to a biological dose response. An exponential equation was used to fit duration and frequency of a specified turbidity level to generate concentric-shaped CDF curves, where at specific turbidities longer durations occurred less frequently and conversely shorter durations occurred more frequently. The significance of the equation fit to the data was accomplished with a Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit test. Our findings showed that the CDF curves derived by an exponential function performed reasonable well, with most curves significant at a 95% confidence level. These CDF curves were then used to demonstrate how they could be used to assess biological impairment, and identify future research needs for improved development of sediment TMDLs. The article reports on the research conducted by John Pitlick and colleagues on the correlation of flow, surface-layer armoring and sediment transport in gravel-bed rivers in Colorado and Utah. Researchers assess the trends in bed surface and substrate grain sizes in relation to reachscale hydraulics using data from more than 100 gravel-bed stream. They found that differences among gravel-bed rivers are evident in the data gathered by researchers in the gravel-bed rivers. They found that the individual size of fractions of the substrate tends to cluster more tightly around average values than the surface and the association between grain size and network location is not as noticeable in the substrate as it is in the surface layer.

The article examines the implications of the saltation-abrasion model for steady-state river longitudinal profile relief and concavity. It investigates the controls on river longitudinal profile concavity and relief using an experimentally calibrated model. It focuses on the case of topographic steady state, in which the rate of vertical rock uplift is equal to the rate of channel incision. The study also carried out a comprehensive sensitivity analysis and explores a variety of key potential linkages among the variables that together control river longitudinal profile form.

The paper presents the application of a two-dimensional depth-averaged numerical model to simulate the lateral migration processes of a meandering reach in the West Jordan River in the state of Utah. A new bank erosion model was developed and then integrated with a depth-averaged two-dimensional hydrodynamic model. The rate of bank erosion is determined by bed degradation, lateral erosion, and bank failure. Because bank material in the West Jordan River is stratified with layers of cohesive and noncohesive materials, a specific bank erosion model was developed to consider stratified layers in the bank surface. This bank erosion model distinguishes itself from other models by relating bank erosion rate with not only flow but also sediment transport near the bank. Additionally, bank height, slope, and thickness of two layers in the bank surface were considered when calculating the rate of bank erosion. The developed model was then applied to simulate the processes of meandering migration in the study reach from 1981 to 1992. Historical real-time hydrographic data, as well as field survey data of channel geometry and bed and bank materials, were used as the input data. Simulated cross-sectional geometries after this 12-year period agreed with field measurements, and the R2 value for predicting thalweg elevation and bank shift are 0.881 and 0.706, respectively. The second largest river in Europe discharges into the Black Sea through the Danube Delta. This delta was, on average, accretive over the past 10,000 years; yet during the last century, its coastal zone has been subjected to intense erosion due to human interventions. The barrages regulating the discharges of the Danube River and the jetties at Sulina mouth have disrupted the natural discharge and coastal circulation of sediment. Since these interventions the deltaic coast has been wave-dominated so that the shoreline position is controlled by the Black Sea wave climate and the associated alongshore transport gradients. Based on regional wind data and a shallow water state-of-the-art wave model (SWAN) a representative wave climate along the depth contours of the Danube Delta coastal zone was determined. The wave climate served as prime input for the computation of the alongshore sediment transport capacity. Finally, the results were compared with previous works and direct observations. The article describes a study that compares the concentration of suspended sediment in two small streams in France to discharges. Both suspended sediment and discharges were measured at the outlets on a yearly and monthly basis, with flood and non-flood periods taken into account. Data revealed that the relationship between suspended sediment concentration and discharge varied greatly, leading to the conclusion that cattle trampling and hydraulic erosion of stream banks are the two chief causes of sediment accumulating in stream catchments.
