It is reported a long-period grating (LPG) dynamic interrogation technique based on the modulation of fiber Bragg gratings located in the readout unit of the system. It permits to attenuate the effect of the noise of the electronics in the resolution of the LPG-based sensing head. The concept is tested to detect variations of the external refractive index and a resolution of 2.010 NIR was achieved without system optimization. In this paper, we present the results concerning the tunability optimization of an Er+3-doped fiber-ring laser. The influence of the doped-fiber length, host matrix, and reflectivity of the device on the tunability and performance of the laser is discussed. We present a theoretical analysis and experimental results for the most suitable configuration of pump power in a two-stage erbium-doped fiber amplifier. The amplifiers are arranged in a copropagating pump scheme and use large signal input and modest pump power. Experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.
