Abstract

As coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is asserting itself as a health crisis, it is necessary to assess the knowledge and perceptions of people about the disease. The aim of this study is to assess the knowledge of the general population about COVID-19 and how the media influence this knowledge. This is a cross-sectional study with 5066 participants who answered an online questionnaire between April and May 2020. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression models. Over 75% have obtained a high degree of knowledge regarding signs, symptoms, and transmission, 95% stated to check the veracity of the information received, and also showed that the total knowledge about COVID-19 was associated with the level of instruction, with the perception of the quality of information disseminated by the media, and with the risk perception. Despite the high level of knowledge of participants, the results pointed to the need to reinforce information for individuals with less education and the importance of avoiding denialism that reduces the risk perception about COVID-19.

Abstract

Aim: To investigate the level of self‐reported work ability and its association with manual patient handling in healthcare workers. Design: Cross‐sectional study adhering to the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) guidelines. Methods: A total of 320 healthcare workers answered a self‐administered questionnaire regarding manual patient handling, work ability, occupational factors, occurrence of low back pain and sociodemographic and lifestyle factors from November 2016 to March 2017. The association between manual patient handling and low back pain was analysed with Poisson regression models. Results: The prevalence ratio of inadequate work ability was 43.42%. Manual patient handling (PR 1.375, 95% CI 1.038–1.821), bachelor education (PR 2.150, 95% CI 1.272–3.632), less than bachelor education (PR 2.166, 95% CI 1.218–3.855), seniority (PR 1.049, 95% CI 1.024–1.086), poor sleep quality (PR 1.425, 95% CI 1.13–1.796) and presence of low back pain (PR 2.003, 95% CI 1.314–3.052) were all positively associated with an inadequate work ability. Trata-se de um estudo transversal, cuja amostra foi composta por 320 profissionais de saúde que atuavam profissionalmente no Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina de Botucatu. Os resultados desta pesquisa foram três artigos científicos, apresentados neste manuscrito. O primeiro teve por objetivo investigar a prevalência de dor lombar e a associação desta com a movimentação manual de pacientes. A prevalência de período (três meses) de dor lombar foi de 57,8% (IC 95% 52,3%- 63,2%). A presença de dor lombar esteve significativamente associada com a movimentação manual de pacientes; de acordo com o modelo múltiplo de Poisson com variância robusta, a prevalência de dor lombar foi 44,4% maior (RP 1,444, IC 95% 1,169-1,783) entre os indivíduos que realizavam este tipo de atividade. O objetivo do segundo artigo foi avaliar a capacidade para o trabalho dos participantes e sua associação com a movimentação manual de pacientes. A pontuação média do Índice de Capacidade para o trabalho foi de 38,03 pontos (DP 6,15, IC 95% 37,33-38,72). A capacidade de trabalho inadequada (pontuação inferior a 37 pontos no Índice de Capacidade para o Trabalho) esteve significativamente associada com a movimentação manual de pacientes; de acordo com o modelo múltiplo de Poisson com variância robusta, a prevalência de capacidade inadequada de trabalho foi 37,5% maior (RP 1,375, IC 95% 1,038-1,821) entre os indivíduos que realizavam este tipo de atividade. O terceiro artigo, por sua vez, teve como objetivo avaliar o grau de conhecimento dos participantes em relação aos riscos desta atividade e as formas seguras de se movimentar pacientes e analisar os fatores associados ao conhecimento. Os participantes obtiveram pontuação média de 12,42 pontos (intervalo 4-20, DP 2,98) de um máximo de 22 pontos possíveis. Nenhuma característica sócio-demográfica, educacional ou ocupacional esteve associada ao grau de conhecimento. Discute-se as associações e suas implicações para a prevenção dos desfechos pesquisados. The purpose of this research was to investigate the association between manual patient handling and (1) low back pain prevalence and (2) work ability among healthcare workers, and, also, (3) to examine their knowledge level of safe patient handling. This is a cross-sectional study. The sample consisted of 320 healthcare workers who worked at the University Hospital of Botucatu Medical School. The results of this research were three scientific papers, presented in this manuscript. The first one investigated low back pain prevalence and its association with manual patient handling. The 3-month period prevalence of low back pain was 57.8% (95% CI 52.3%- 63.2%). Low back pain was significantly associated with manual patient handling; according to the multiple Poisson regression model with robust variance low back pain prevalence was 44.4% higher (PR 1.444, 95% CI 1.169-1.783) among individuals who performed this activity. The second one evaluated the level of work ability and its association with manual patient handling. The Work Ability Index mean score was 38.03 points (SD 6.15, 95% CI 37.33-38.72). An inadequate level of work ability (Work Ability Index score lower than 37 points) was significantly associated with manual patient handling; according to the multiple Poisson regression model with robust variance inadequate level of work ability was 37.5% higher (PR 1.375, 95% CI 1.038-1.821) among individuals who performed this activity. Finally, the third one examined the knowledge level of safe patient handling among and analyzed its associated factors. The mean score of safe patient handling knowledge was 12.42 (range 4 - 20, SD 2.98) out of 22 maximum points. None of the variables have reached significance at the 0.05 level when examined in the multiple Poisson regression model with robust variance. These associations and their implications in the prevention of the studied outcomes are discussed.

4. Prevalence and factors associated with the occurrence of urinary incontinence during pregnancy.

Abstract

Objectives: to determine the prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) during pregnancy, to identify and quantify the factors associated with gestational UI. Methods: a cross-sectional study carried out with women admitted for deliveries in all maternity wards in the city of Botucatu (São Paulo). Data were collected through a structured questionnaire, based on the literature, containing questions about the occurrence of UI, its types, risk factors and moments when urinary losses occurred. Associations between UI and the predictive variables were analyzed with logistic regression models. Results: 950 women were interviewed, out of which 472 complained of urinary losses during pregnancy, resulting in a prevalence of 49.68% (CI95%= 46.51 - 52.86).The majority (61.8%) were classified as mixed UI. Among the covariates investigated, smoking (OR= 4.56), illicit drugs use (OR= 25.14), stimulant foods (OR= 1.84), constipation (OR=1.99), hypertensive disorders during gestation (OR= 3.23), gestational diabetes mellitus (OR= 2.89), parity (OR= 1.52) and previous caesarean sections (OR= 2.56) increased the chance of urinary losses during pregnancy. Conclusions: there was a high prevalence of UI during pregnancy. This condition was strongly associated with lifestyle habits and gestational morbidities. Finally, it is worth highlighting the fact that delivery via caesarean section increased the chance of UI in subsequent pregnancies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract We present a hospital-based case-control study, which aimed to address the question: are self-reports of musculoskeletal symptoms associated with the occurrence of work-related accidents? The study was conducted among workers aged 17–59 years and residing in Botucatu, Brazil. Cases were workers who had had work-related accidents that required hospitalization, while controls included non-work-related accidents. Altogether, 80 cases and 125 controls were included. Self-reports of musculoskeletal symptoms were assessed by the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire. Associations between self-reports of musculoskeletal symptoms and work-related accidents were analyzed with logistic regression models. Our results show that self-reports of musculoskeletal symptoms in the upper limbs and in the vertebral column are associated with the occurrence of work-related accidents. Thus, this case–control study suggests (1) that musculoskeletal symptoms in the upper limbs and in the vertebral column are associated with increased odds of work-related accidents; and (2) that the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire may be used as a complementary screening tool for identifying workers at risk for work-related accidents. Abstract

Background: Sick leaves are important events for both the worker and the employer. Many factors are related with sick leaves and depending on the factors the worker could perform a successful return to work. In this sense, the objective of this study is to identify those factors associated with return to work after sick leaves in a group of public workers in Brazil. Methods: A case-control study of return to work after sick leaves in a university campus from 2010 to 2015. Logistic regression models were adjusted for two different response variables: return to work with and without restrictions. A digital database was created and completed with data from manual sources. Results: A computerised database has been created, based on manual records, which has allowed us to identify labour and non-labour factors associated with the return to work after a sick leave and the possible functional readaptation, with or without restrictions, in public workers. Age at the beginning of the process, number of sick leaves, those of more than 16 days, average duration (total time of sick leaves / number of medical records), and mid-level healthcare positions were associated with return to work without restrictions. In the model of return to work with restrictions, the age of hiring by the university, the number of sick leaves, those of more than 16 days, and mid-level healthcare positions, both rural work and operational positions, were associated to the response variable. Conclusions: This study has allowed us to identify the factors associated with the return to work after a period of sick leave in a large group of public workers. However, more research is needed on the mental disorders that cause sick leaves, their evaluation and the handling of these situations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Trata-se de um estudo transversal com 70 cuidadores informais que tiveram avaliadas a capacidade para o trabalho, variáveis sociodemográficas e variáveis relacionadas ao cuidado. Os resultados desta pesquisa são apresentados em forma de um artigo original, que contempla os objetivos propostos. Em relação à capacidade para o trabalho, em 35,7% dos cuidadores informais esta foi classificada como inadequada. Qualidade de vida (OR: 0,948, IC: 0,925 – 0,971) e autopercepção da aptidão física (OR: 0,324, IC: 0,175 – 0,602), apresentaram associação positiva com a capacidade para o trabalho, enquanto, idade (OR: 1,066, IC: 1,021 – 1,113), sobrecarga do cuidador (OR: 1,054, IC: 1,010 – 1,100) e piora da qualidade do sono (OR: 1,070, IC: 1,017 – 1,127) apresentaram associação inversa com a capacidade para o trabalho. Os aspectos relacionados à saúde do cuidador informal são poucos estudados no Brasil e no mundo, assim os resultados encontrados neste estudo auxiliam no embasamento de discussões que visem à implementação de políticas públicas de saúde voltadas à essa população. The objective of this research was to evaluate the work ability in informal caregivers of bedridden or domiciled patients attended by the Home Care Service of Bauru / SP, as well as to investigate the factors associated with it. This is a cross-sectional study of 70 informal caregivers who had their work ability, sociodemographic variables and care-related variables evaluated. The results of this research are presented in the form of an original article, which contemplates the proposed objectives. Regarding work ability, 35.7% of informal caregivers were classified as inadequate. Quality of life (OR: 0.948, CI: 0.925 - 0.971) and self-perceived physical fitness (OR: 0.324, CI: 0.175 - 0.602) were positively associated with work ability, while age (OR: 1.066, CI : 1.021 - 1.133), caregiver burden (OR: 1.054, CI: 1.010 - 1.100) and worsening sleep quality (OR: 1.070, IC: 1.017 - 1.127) were inversely associated with work ability. Aspects related to the informal caregiver's health have been relatively scarcely studied in Brazil and worldwide, thus the results found in this study may set up scientific bases for discussions about the implementation of public health policies aimed at this population.
