Accurately simulating snow cover dynamics and the snow–atmosphere coupling is of major importance for topics as wide-ranging as water resources, natural hazards, and climate change impacts with consequences for sea level rise. We present a new modelling framework for atmospheric flow simulations for cryospheric regions called CRYOWRF. CRYOWRF couples the state-of-the-art and widely used atmospheric model WRF (the Weather Research and Forecasting model) with the detailed snow cover model SNOWPACK. CRYOWRF makes it feasible to simulate the dynamics of a large number of snow layers governed by grain-scale prognostic variables with online coupling to the atmosphere for multiscale simulations from the synoptic to the turbulent scales. Additionally, a new blowing snow scheme is introduced in CRYOWRF and is discussed in detail. CRYOWRF's technical design goals and model capabilities are described, and the performance costs are shown to compare favourably with existing land surface schemes. Three case studies showcasing envisaged use cases for CRYOWRF for polar ice sheets and alpine snowpacks are provided to equip potential users with templates for their research. Finally, the future roadmap for CRYOWRF's development and usage is discussed.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is primarily the result of incomplete combustion, which has important impacts on the atmospheric chemical cycle and climate. Improved quantitative characterization of long-term CO trends is important for both atmospheric modeling and the design and implementation of policies to efficiently control multiple pollutants. Due to the limitations of high time-resolution and high-quality long-term observational data, studies on long-term trends in the CO concentration in China are quite limited. In this study, the observational data of the concentration of CO in a rural site of Beijing during 2006–2018 was used to analyze the long-term trend in CO concentration in Beijing. The Theil-Sen method and the generalized additive model (GAM)-based method, were used to conduct the trend estimation analysis. We found that the concentration of CO at the Shangdianzi site showed a significant downward trend during 2006–2018, with a decline rate of 22.8 ± 5.1 ppbV per year. The declining trend in CO also showed phasic characteristics, with a fast decreasing rate during the period of 2006–2008, stable variations during the period of 2009–2013 and a continuous downward trend after 2013. The declining trend in the CO concentration in the south to west (S-W) sectors where the polluted air masses come from is more rapid than that in the sectors where the clean air masses come from. The declining trend in the CO concentration implies the improved combustion efficiency and the successful air pollution control policies in Beijing and the surrounding area.

This study simulates an unusual extreme rainfall event that occurred in Salvador city, Bahia, Brazil, on December 9, 2017, which was named subtropical storm Guará and had precipitation of approximately 24 mm within less than 1 h. Numerical simulations were conducted using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model over three domains with horizontal resolutions of 9, 3, and 1 km. Different combinations of seven microphysics, three cumulus, and three planetary boundary layer schemes were evaluated based on their ability to simulate the hourly precipitation during this rainfall event. Statistical indices (MB = –0.69; RMSE = 4.11; MAGE = 1.74; r = 0.55; IOA = 0.66; FAC2 = 0.58) and time series plots showed that the most suitable configurations for this weather event were the Mellor-Yamada-Janjić, Grell-Freitas, and Lin formulations for the planetary boundary layer, cumulus, and microphysics schemes, respectively. The results were compared with the data measured at meteorological stations located in Salvador city. The WRF model simulated well the arrival and occurrence of this extreme weather event in a tropical and coastal region, considering that the region already has intense convective characteristics and is constantly influenced by sea breezes, which could interfere in the model results and compromise the performance of the simulations.

Seasonal forecasts of summer continental United States (CONUS) rainfall have relatively low skill, partly due to a lack of consensus about its sources of predictability. The East Asian monsoon (EAM) can excite a cross-Pacific Rossby wave train, also known as the Asia-North America (ANA) teleconnection. In this study, we analyze the ANA teleconnection in observations and model simulations from the Community Atmospheric Model, version 5 (CAM5), comparing experiments with prescribed climatological SSTs and prescribed observed SSTs. Observations indicate a statistically significant relationship between a strong EAM and increased probability of positive precipitation anomalies over the U.S. west coast and the Plains-Midwest. The ANA teleconnection and CONUS rainfall patterns are improved in the CAM5 experiment with prescribed observed SSTs, suggesting that SST variability is necessary to simulate this teleconnection over CONUS. We find distinct ANA patterns between ENSO phases, with the La Niña-related patterns in CAM5_obsSST disagreeing with observations. Using linear steady-state quasi-geostrophic theory, we conclude that incorrect EAM forcing location greatly contributed to CAM5 biases, and jet stream disparities explained the ENSO-related biases. Finally, we compared EAM forcing experiments with different mean states using a simple dry nonlinear atmospheric general circulation model. Overall, the ANA pattern over CONUS and its modulation by ENSO forcing are well described by dry dynamics on seasonal-to-interannual timescales, including the constructive (destructive) interference between El Niño (La Niña) modulation and the ANA patterns over CONUS.

During daylight hours, the mean radiant temperature Tmrt$T_{\text{mrt}}$ is one of the most important meteorological parameters to analyse heat stress for humans. This study conducts a spatio-temporal analysis of Tmrt$T_{\text{mrt}}$ for a summer period in 2018 for the city of Berlin, Germany. To this end, the mesoscale climate model COSMO-CLM (CCLM) is coupled with the urban Double Canyon Effect Parameterization scheme with a building energy model (DCEP–BEM) to derive Tmrt$T_{\text{mrt}}$. This coupled model system CCLM/DCEP–BEM enables a dynamic calculation of Tmrt$T_{\text{mrt}}$ for the microscale urban street canyons using a mesoscale model. To bring a more accurate comparison, a two-step approach is applied to assess the radiative fluxes and Tmrt$T_{\text{mrt}}$ from CCLM/DCEP–BEM. The radiation model SOLWEIG is first validated against measurement and then used to evaluate the DCEP–BEM model. Overall good agreement in Tmrt$T_{\text{mrt}}$ is found between CCLM/DCEP–BEM and SOLWEIG (R2=0.96$\text{R}^2 =\nobreak 0.96$). Nighttime Tmrt$T_{\text{mrt}}$ simulated with CCLM/DCEP–BEM is higher than that with SOLWEIG (MBE=2.9K$\text{MBE}=\nobreak 2.9\,\text{K}$), yet closer to measurements. Tmrt$T_{\text{mrt}}$ during the afternoon hours modeled with CCLM/DCEP–BEM is underestimated compared to SOLWEIG (MBE=-3.1K$\text{MBE}=\nobreak -3.1\,\text{K}$). Further, excluding vegetation, higher values for nighttime Tmrt$T_{\text{mrt}}$ are found in the densely built-up city center than in the suburbs with more open structures, while the city center has lower values for Tmrt$T_{\text{mrt}}$ during midday. This study provides a reliable representation of Tmrt$T_{\text{mrt}}$ in a mesoscale model and would be beneficial for future implementation of human-biometeorological variables such as the Universal Thermal Climate Index or Physiological Equivalent Temperature. These quantities are calculated using Tmrt$T_{\text{mrt}}$.

Identifying objects or pixels of interest that are few in numbers and sparsely populated in imagery is referred to as target detection. Traditionally, the inverse modeling (IM) approach, usually a slow and computationally intensive process, is used for detecting targets using surface reflectance spectra. For the emerging online methods in remote sensing, modeling the at-sensor radiance of target material, i.e., a forward modeling (FM) approach, can be used. Compared to the IM approach, FM is better suited to online methods due to its potential for adaptation to regional atmospheric modeling. Spectral knowledge transfer of a target from a known to an unknown atmospheric condition is the primary outcome of an efficient target detection framework. However, such an endeavor requires an exhaustive assessment of the target detection process under different atmospheric models and associated uncertainties. The objective of this work is to assess the quantitative impact of atmospheric parameters on the detectability of engineered targets. Specifically, the impact of critical atmospheric parameters such as aerosol optical thickness (AOT), standard atmospheric profiles, and aerosol models are considered. For this effect, we designed a multi-platform image acquisition setup that acquired targets concurrently using a ground-based terrestrial hyperspectral imager (THI), an airborne hyperspectral imager (AVIRIS-NG), and a space-borne multispectral imager (Sentinel-2). We used a point-based spectroradiometer and pixel-based THI to collect the in-situ reference target reflectance spectra and generated a radiance spectral library by simulating TOA radiance spectra using the Second Simulation of the Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum (6S) radiative transfer model. We have considered two cases of target radiance simulations, i.e., (i) corresponding to a grid of different AOT values for a predefined atmospheric and aerosol profile, and (ii) corresponding to varying combinations of atmospheric and aerosol profiles at a given AOT. The detection has been carried out using multiple target detection algorithms. Results indicate that the spectral knowledge-based targets can be detected in remote sensing data under different atmospheric model scenarios using the FM approach. A detection rate of about 75% and 50% have been consistently obtained for remote sensing data from airborne and space-borne platforms with a false alarm (FA) rate of 10 - 2 to 10 - 3 respectively. Change in the AOT across atmospheric models has resulted in decision-changing implications in the target detection modeling. The selection of the wrong atmospheric profile can potentially aggravate the number of FAs produced by a particular detection algorithm.

Top-of-atmosphere (TOA) albedo is a significant factor of earth energy budget, climate change, and environmental change. As tremendous regional and global changes are happening over ocean, more details are needed to monitor the ocean environment. However, there were still no high-spatial resolution TOA albedo products over ocean. In this study, a new algorithm for clear-sky TOA albedo estimation over ocean was proposed, based on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. Instead of building angular distribution models, direct retrieval models between TOA reflectance and TOA albedo were developed based on extensive radiative transfer (RT) simulations, covering thousands of ocean and atmosphere types. Three-component ocean water albedo model was involved to take account for the ocean surface anisotropy at different wind speed, wind direction, and chlorophyll concentration, while Modtran 5 was utilized to simulate different atmospheric conditions. Our results showed good agreement with the Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) based on a global comparison on August 4, 2011, with RMSE = 0.015 and bias = 0.002. And our MODIS-based products provide more spatial details due to higher spatial resolution (1 km), which will be a good data source for regional environmental and climatic research and will also enhance the understanding of Earth's radiation budget.

Detailed meteorological analyses based on observations extending through the middle atmosphere (∼ 15 to 100 km altitude) can provide key information to whole atmosphere modeling systems regarding the physical mechanisms linking day-to-day changes in ionospheric electron density to meteorological variability near the Earth's surface. However, the extent to which independent middle atmosphere analyses differ in their representation of wave-induced coupling to the ionosphere is unclear. To begin to address this issue, we present the first intercomparison among four such analyses, JAGUAR-DAS, MERRA-2, NAVGEM-HA, and WACCMX+DART, focusing on the Northern Hemisphere (NH) 2009–2010 winter, which includes a major sudden stratospheric warming (SSW). This intercomparison examines the altitude, latitude, and time dependences of zonal mean zonal winds and temperatures among these four analyses over the 1 December 2009 to 31 March 2010 period, as well as latitude and altitude dependences of monthly mean amplitudes of the diurnal and semidiurnal migrating solar tides, the eastward-propagating diurnal zonal wave number 3 nonmigrating tide, and traveling planetary waves associated with the quasi-5 d and quasi-2 d Rossby modes. Our results show generally good agreement among the four analyses up to the stratopause (∼ 50 km altitude). Large discrepancies begin to emerge in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere owing to (1) differences in the types of satellite data assimilated by each system and (2) differences in the details of the global atmospheric models used by each analysis system. The results of this intercomparison provide initial estimates of uncertainty in analyses commonly used to constrain middle atmospheric meteorological variability in whole atmosphere model simulations.

The Bay of Bengal (BoB) sea surface temperatures (SSTs) are found to be negatively correlated with the Indian summer monsoon (ISM) rainfall at seasonal, monthly and daily time scales. It is intriguing that the ISM seasonal mean rainfall is reported to be decreasing in the recent decades while no prominent warming has been observed over the BoB. We posit that the reason why BoB warming is not apparent is because BoB surface waters stay largely above the convective threshold of ~ 28 °C and further warming may be perceivable only in terms of an atmospheric response. This is consistent with prominent increase in the latent heat flux (LHF) over BoB during the pre-monsoon season. However such an increasing trend in LHF is not seen for the monsoon season. The increased surface evaporation leading to an increase in LHF over BoB enhances convection aloft which drives a stronger low level pre-monsoon circulation. We hypothesize that the dynamic response of the atmosphere associated with the pre-monsoon circulation changes driven by the BoB warming can explain, at least in part, the observed ISM rainfall trend. This hypothesis is tested by diagnosing SST-forced simulations with the Community Atmosphere Model version 6. The results suggest that the BoB warming does generate dynamic and thermodynamic responses which enhance moisture convergence (divergence) and convection over BoB (central India) during the pre-monsoon season. As a consequence, evapotranspiration is enhanced over the Indian subcontinent leaving the ground drier and colder. The net result is a weaker land–ocean thermal contrast and a weaker monsoon circulation and hence reduced seasonal rainfall totals.

Offshore wind energy has seen a steady increase in the latest years as it serves as an ideal alternative energy source to meet our renewable energy goals. Due to this increase in interest and in installations of offshore wind farms a better understanding of the impact of waves on the power production of wind farms in necessary. This wave-wind farm power production interaction has scarcely been examined, however, some exceptions of small scale large-eddy-simulations exist. Unfortunately, these studies are not able to take multiple wind farms under real weather conditions into account. Here, we show the power production and wake lengths of 1250 offshore wind turbines located in the German Bight simulated by a stand-alone atmospheric (WRF) model and a coupled atmosphere-wave (WRF-SWAN) model. The coupled atmosphere-wave model estimates larger (smaller) power production in case of waves and wind traveling in the same (opposed) direction compared to the stand-alone atmospheric model. The relative difference between the two models can be as much as 20% for the two-week averaged grid power production, while the difference in total power over this two-week period is equal to 9%. Moreover, the wind farm wake lengths of waves and wind traveling in the same (opposed) direction are longer (shorter) for the coupled atmosphere-wave model compared to the stand-alone atmospheric model. Here, the relative difference of the mean wake length between the two models can be up to 25%. This shows the importance of waves as a part of the offshore wind environment and can be an important factor in future wind assessment or power production estimation studies.

Evidence clearly shows that the mid-tropospheric North Atlantic subtropical high (NASH) is much stronger than the North Pacific subtropical high (NPSH) in summer, but the mechanism is unknown. To understand the mechanism for such zonal difference between the two systems, we perform a series of sensitivity simulations using a community atmosphere model (CAM) and a linear baroclinic model (LBM). The CAM results indicate that the zonal variation of tropical sea-surface temperatures (SSTs), followed by Tibetan Plateau (TP), play leading roles in the formation of these mid-level subtropical high differences through modulating precipitation-related heating sources. The impacts of such heat sources are then investigated using the LBM. The tropical SST variation-related convective heating over the northeastern equatorial Pacific acts to enhance the NASH via exciting an eastward-propagating wave pattern resembling the Pacific-North American teleconnection; the TP-induced large-scale latent heating can also cause the NASH-NPSH difference by exciting a circumglobal teleconnection (CGT)-like wave pattern with westward-propagating part and eastward-propagating part along the westerly jet stream. Thus, their combined effect makes the NASH much stronger than the NPSH in the mid troposphere during summertime.

In order to solve the problem that urban spatial pattern causes by gradually deteriorating the urban microclimate,directly affecting the comfort of the living environment and to clarify the influence of the urban spatial configuration on residential microclimate, a microclimate detection system based on wireless sensor network is proposed to detect the microclimate of urban residential area,and a mathematical modeling method of the relationship between different parameters such as: urban spatial pattern parameters (building density, average height of building, horizontal layout and vertical layout), residential microclimate parameters (mean radiant temperature(MRT), and Physiological Equivalent Temperature (PET)) based on surrogate model is investigated to analyze the correlation between spatial pattern change of urban residential area and microclimate. The Kriging model and response surface model are used to establish the mathematical model between the spatial shape and the microclimate. The results showed that the kriging model has higher precision than the response surface model, so the kriging model was used to model the relationship between urban spatial model parameters and residential microclimate parameters. The results of the influence of spatial morphology parameters on microclimate indicate that the building density and average height of building are positively correlated with the PET and MRT parameters,and horizontal layout and vertical layout are negatively correlated with the PET and MRT parameters. Thus through reasonable building layout, we can optimize and improve the microclimate environment of residential area, which is helpful in guiding the design of building scheme.

The past four decades have seen an increase of terrestrial hot extremes during summer in the northern extratropics, accompanied by the Northern Hemisphere (NH) sea surface temperature (SST) warming (mainly over 10°–70°N, 0°–360°) and CO2 concentration rising. This study aims to understand possible causes for the increasing hot extremes, which are defined on a daily basis. We conduct a series of numerical experiments using the Community Atmosphere Model version 5 model for two periods, 1979–1995 and 2002–2018. The experiment by changing the CO2 concentration only with the climatological SST shows less increase of hot extremes days than that observed, whereas that by changing the NH SST (over 10°–70°N, 0°–360°) with constant CO2 concentration strengthens the hot extremes change over mid-latitudes. The experiment with both SST and CO2 concentration changes shows hot extremes change closer to the observation compared to the single-change experiments, as well as more similar simulations of atmospheric circulations and feedbacks from cloud and radiative processes. Also discussed are roles of natural variability (e.g., Pacific Decadal Oscillation and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation) and other factors (e.g., Arctic sea ice and tropical SST).

Globally gridded sea surface temperatures (SSTs) provide key data for long-term monitoring of the stability of satellite data. Despite apparent limitations, accurate hyperspectral data can provide useful independent information to critique the stability of global SST products on the annual-to-decadal time scale. We compared data from atmospheric infrared sounder (AIRS) on EOS Aqua and Crosstrack Interferometer Sounder (CrIS) on SNPP with the SST products from NOAA/NESDIS [real time global (RTG)], the Canadian Meteorological Centre (CMC), and the U.K. Met Office [Operational Sea Surface Temperature and Sea Ice Analysis (OSTIA)]. For the 2013–2019 period, the overall standard deviation of the difference between AIRS and the RTG was 0.55 K, with an increasing trend over time. In contrast, the standard deviation of the difference between the AIRS, the CMC, and the OSTIA dropped steadily to below 0.4 K, a level previously seen only in SST products relative to independent buoy data. Unexplained biases between the observed and the gridded SSTs at the 100-mK level are consistent with the already existing estimates of the AIRS and CrIS absolute calibration accuracy. However, the AIRS and CrIS observations both show artifacts in all three SST products, increasing with distance from the equator, with the CMC artifacts being the smallest. Even with the CMC, a trend of 4 mK per year relative to AIRS and CrIS was observed between 2013 and 2019 for the 30S–30N oceans. Investigation of the underlying causes of the observed discrepancies requires further work.

This letter reports a correlation analysis of path loss considering atmospheric refractivity and precipitation in an air-to-ground radar application. For the path loss estimation, the refractivity and rainfall attenuation models are derived using actual atmospheric data. The path loss along the range and altitude is obtained using parabolic equation software tool (PETOOL). The digital terrain elevation data (DTED) of the Suwon-Osan area, the radar antenna beam pattern, and environmental models are employed in the PETOOL. Then, we expand the path loss calculation in an azimuthal scan to observe the illuminated field intensity on the ground for a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) application. The results confirm that the illuminated field intensity for SAR applications is closely related to refractivity and precipitation.

A low-level-jet (LLJ) event that occurred over a coastal area in complex terrain is analyzed to investigate its effect on the dispersion of potential air pollutants released in the area. The atmospheric model RAMS (Regional Atmospheric Modeling System) is employed with a high vertical resolution close to the surface, adopting a rarely used nesting approach, in order to allow a detailed analysis of the flow and to characterize the specific features of the LLJ. After a comparison with meteorological variables measured by radiosondes, numerical experiments are performed adding a scalar tracer in the simulation. As a first test, the tracer is distributed uniformly throughout the domain to follow the dynamics of the LLJ and its effect on the tracer dispersion. Then, continuous releases from virtual point sources are simulated to address their possible impact in the area under LLJ conditions. This allows the identification of “hotspots” of pollutant accumulation due to very local circulations and convective cells that develop from the combined effect of terrain-induced flow and the interaction of the LLJ flow with complex topography. An original mass analysis is applied on the dispersion results for an advanced exploration of the LLJ impact on the tracer. The RAMS model provides reliable results demonstrating that with which atmospheric numerical models are useful tools with which to study LLJ dynamics and their effect on local circulation and pollutant dispersion.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has initiated the production of a 1980–2018, 10 km, North American precipitation and surface reanalysis. ERA-Interim is used to initialize the Global Deterministic Reforecast System (GDRS) at a 39 km resolution. Its output is then dynamically downscaled to 10 km by the Regional Deterministic Reforecast System (RDRS). Coupled with the RDRS, the Canadian Land Data Assimilation System (CaLDAS) and Precipitation Analysis (CaPA) are used to produce surface and precipitation analyses. All systems used are close to operational model versions and configurations. In this study, a 7-year sample of the reanalysis (2011–2017) is evaluated. Verification results show that the skill of the RDRS is stable over time and equivalent to that of the current operational system. The impact of the coupling between RDRS and CaLDAS is explored using an early version of the reanalysis system which was run at 15 km resolution for the period 2010–2014, with and without the use of CaLDAS. Significant improvements are observed with CaLDAS in the lower troposphere and surface layer, especially for the 850 hPa dew point and absolute temperatures in summer. Precipitation is further improved through an offline precipitation analysis which allows the assimilation of additional observations of 24 h precipitation totals. The final dataset should be of particular interest for hydrological applications focusing on transboundary and northern watersheds, where existing products often show discontinuities at the border and assimilate very few – if any – precipitation observations.

The applications of high-spatial-resolution satellite data have been increasing in recent years owing to improvements in sensor techniques, and the errors in estimated parameters induced by ignoring topographic effects are increasingly stressed because their effects are important for parameter retrieval from high-spatial-resolution satellite observations. A coupled surface-atmosphere model is employed to develop a two-step multiparameter estimation scheme to simultaneously estimate multiple parameters (leaf area index, LAI; aerosol optical depth, AOD; photosynthetically active radiation, PAR; incident shortwave radiation, ISR; surface albedo, and fraction of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation, FAPAR) from long-term Landsat 4–8 top-of-atmosphere (TOA) observations. First, the influential parameters of the coupled model are retrieved through optimization retrieval strategies. Then, these estimated parameters are entered into the coupled model to compute the PAR, ISR, surface reflectance, surface albedo, and FAPAR. Validation of this scheme with in situ measurements from 57 sites demonstrates that it can successfully estimate multiple parameters from Landsat TOA data, with root mean square errors (RMSEs) of LAI, AOD, FAPAR, visible albedo, shortwave albedo, PAR, and ISR of 0.69, 0.16, 0.13, 0.034, 0.047, 26.80, and 64.28 W/m2, respectively. In the two-step multiparameter estimation scheme, atmospheric and topographic corrections of satellite observations are avoided because the atmospheric and topographic effects are incorporated, and the surface anisotropy is also effectively considered. In addition, by using the two-step multiparameter estimation scheme, physical connections among the multiple parameters are ensured since they are estimated from the same physical model.

The absolute radiometric accuracy of thermal infrared channels of the Advanced Geosynchronous Radiation Imager (AGRI) onboard the FengYun-4A (FY4A) satellite was assessed with field experiment data in a vicarious calibration on 18, 2019, and August 20, 2019, in Lake Qinghai. Continuous water temperature records were collected by an unmanned surface vehicle equipped with a radiometer during the experimental period. We proposed a spectral matching method based on atmospheric transfer code to create consistent equivalent spectral radiance, and the results predicted by atmospheric transfer simulation were convolved with instrument response functions to obtain predicted brightness temperature for comparison with satellite-derived temperature. Our results indicated that AGRI had an average temperature bias of 0.12 K with an RMSE of 0.17 and 0.61 K with an RMSE of 0.22 K in band 12 and band 13 on August 18, while these biases decreased to −0.01 K with an RMSE of 0.13 and −0.48 K with an RMSE of 0.17 K on August 20, respectively. This radiometric accuracy indicated that AGRI TIR bands are well functional compared with their preflight requirement of less than 1 K. The uncertainty analysis also suggested that atmospheric conditions would alter the calibration accuracy by influencing the transmittance and path thermal radiance. Meanwhile, cloud cover also requires more attention to select the appropriate concurrent satellite pixels to reduce the possible cloud edge effects. It is important and necessary for FY4A AGRI to conduct more intense automatic observations and obtain more data to improve the accuracy of radiometric calibration and monitor the operational status of satellite instruments.

Ethane ( C2H6 ) is an important greenhouse gas and plays a significant role in tropospheric chemistry and climate change. This study first presents and then quantifies the variability, sources, and transport of C2H6 over densely populated and highly industrialized eastern China using ground-based high-resolution Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) remote sensing along with atmospheric modeling techniques. We obtained a retrieval error of 6.21 ± 1.2 (1 σ )% and degrees of freedom (DOFS) of 1.47 ± 0.2 (1 σ ) in the retrieval of C2H6 tropospheric column-averaged dry-air mole fraction (troDMF) over Hefei, eastern China (32 ∘ N, 117 ∘ E; 30 m a . s . l . ). The observed C2H6 troDMF reached a minimum monthly mean value of 0.36 ± 0.26 ppbv in July and a maximum monthly mean value of 1.76 ± 0.35 ppbv in December, and showed a negative change rate of − 2.60 ± 1.34 % yr−1 from 2015 to 2020. The dependencies of C2H6 troDMF on meteorological and emission factors were analyzed using generalized additive models (GAMs). Generally, both meteorological and emission factors have positive influences on C2H6 troDMF in the cold season (December–January–February/March–April–May, DJF/MAM) and negative influences on C2H6 troDMF in the warm season (June–July–August/September–October–November, JJA/SON). GEOS-Chem chemical model simulation captured the observed C2H6 troDMF variability and was, thus, used for source attribution. GEOS-Chem model sensitivity simulations concluded that the anthropogenic emissions (fossil fuel plus biofuel emissions) and the natural emissions (biomass burning plus biogenic emissions) accounted for 48.1 % and 39.7 % of C2H6 troDMF variability over Hefei, respectively. The observed C2H6 troDMF variability mainly results from the emissions within China (74.1 %), where central, eastern, and northern China dominated the contribution (57.6 %). Seasonal variability in C2H6 transport inflow and outflow over the observation site is largely related to the midlatitude westerlies and the Asian monsoon system. Reduction in C2H6 abundance from 2015 to 2020 mainly results from the decrease in local and transported C2H6 emissions, which points to air quality improvement in China in recent years.

Variable atmospheric conditions are typically ignored in the retrieval of geophysical parameters of the Earth’s surface when using spaceborne passive microwave observations. However, high frequencies, for example, 91.7 GHz, are sensitive to variable atmospheric absorption, even in winter’s dry conditions. In this article, the influence of variable atmospheric absorption on snow cover extent (SCE) mapping was quantitatively investigated. A physical method was derived to enable atmospheric correction for variable atmospheric conditions. The total column precipitable water vapor (TPWV) from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) was parametrized into transmittances in this correction method. The corrected brightness temperature at 19 and 91.7 GHz from the Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder (SSMIS) was applied to the threshold algorithm for snow mapping over China. Compared with the Interactive Multisensor Snow and Ice Mapping System (IMS) data in winter from 2012 to 2013, for Qinghai–Tibet plateau (QTP), a significant improvement after correction was obtained from February to March over ephemeral and shallow snow, where the largest daily improvement of accuracy is up to 20%. The accuracy (incl. precision, recall, and F1 index) improved on average is from 0.77 (0.60, 0.68, and 0.63) to 0.79 (0.69, 0.7, and 0.68) over the full winter time from December to March. Over forest-rich Northeast China, where snow in winter is thicker, small improvement was observed at the onset of the snow season and over snow margin area. It was evidenced that high frequency is a promising way of snow cover mapping with the proposed atmospheric correction method.

Accurate information about the airport’s throughput is crucial for monitoring traffic flow, evaluating the development status of aviation industry. In this letter, we used the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership-Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer (NPP-VIIRS) and the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program’s Operational Linescan System (DMSP-OLS) nighttime light (NTL) data as effective proxies for evaluating and monitoring the airport’s throughput power in China mainland. The results show that there is a significant positive correlation between the NTL intensity and the airport’s throughput ( $R^{2} > 0.85$ ). The NPP-VIIRS NTL data have been proved to not only distinguish the airport area and nonairport area but also build airport’s NTL feature space. This letter reveals that the NTL images provide powerful remote sensing data sources to model the spatiotemporal dynamics of airport’s throughput of China mainland at a large spatial scale.

This work analyzes and discusses the influence of human activities on the meteorological conditions related to winter haze events in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei (i.e., the Jing–Jin–Ji region) during 1961–2016, using the results of two numerical simulation experiments based on the Community Atmosphere Model version 5.1.1 (http://www.cesm.ucar.edu/models/cesm1.0/cam/docs/ug5_1_1/book1.html) used in the international Climate Variability and Predictability Programme (CLIVAR) Climate of the 20th Century. Detection and Attribution Project (C20C+ D&A). The results show that, under the influence of human activities, the changes in dynamical and thermal meteorological conditions related to winter haze events in the Jing–Jin–Ji region are conducive to the formation and accumulation of haze, and prevent the diffusion of pollutants. The dynamical conditions mainly include the obvious weakening of the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) and the enhancement of the near-surface anomalous southerly wind. The thermal conditions include the obvious increase in surface temperature, and the enhancement of water vapor transport and near-surface inversion. The relative contribution of dynamical and thermal conditions to the variation of haze days in the Jing–Jin–Ji region is analyzed using statistical methods. The results show that the contribution of human activities to the increase of haze days in the Jing–Jin–Ji region is greater than that of natural forcing for the study period. To be specific, the dynamical meteorological factors contribute more to the haze days than the thermal meteorological factors. The contribution of thermal meteorological factors is basically the same in both scenarios.

Atmospheric phase screen (APS) is a very critical issue for the application of interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques. The spatial–temporal variations of APS are the dominant error source in interferograms and may completely mask displacement signals. Many external meteorological data-based methods and phase-based methods have been developed in the past decades, but all have their inherent limitations. In this article, we propose a deep learning-based method, which is based on an attention-based deep residual U-shaped network (ARU-Net), to mitigate atmospheric artifacts. With this approach, APS patches and clean interferogram patches are sampled from InSAR interferograms to train the network. After training, the network can be used to mitigate the APS for individual interferograms. Compared with the generic atmospheric correction model (GACOS) and the advanced time-series InSAR method distributed scatterer interferometry (DSI), the key advantage of our method is that atmospheric delay can be effectively learned and removed from individual high-resolution interferometric phase itself without external data. Accuracy was validated by using individual and stacked interferograms from TerraSAR-X data over the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) and Hong Kong Science Park (HKSP) sites. The results showed that our method consistently delivered greater standard deviation (SD) reduction after APS correction than the GACOS method. Moreover, the time-series results were in agreement with the DSI and leveling measurements. The effectiveness of the proposed ARU-Net to remove APS effects from interferograms shows great potential for the development of a new set of deep learning-based APS reduction methods.

Dust is the cause of generation reduction of solar photovoltaic (SPV) modules from the day it is installed. Its deposition depends on geographical location of a module where it is installed, due to difference in meteorological events, causing variation in generation efficiency. In an earlier article, the dry deposition processes are modeled in which effects of relative humidity (RH) and precipitation are not considered. In this article, a more generalized mathematical model for dust deposition under varying humidity and precipitation condition is developed. The increase in deposition with different RH has been investigated using the developed model demonstrating an appreciable effect. The contribution of different types of precipitation is also included. The model based observations are utilized to calculate the energy generation under different meteorological events over a specific period and compared with the measured ones over the same time span from a 10 kWp SPV power plant at IIEST, Shibpur. The deviations are found to be within ±6% establishing the efficacy of the model.

High-resolution modeling is implemented to investigate an evolution of two quasi-tropical cyclones (QTC) over the Black Sea: in September of 2005 and 2018. For comparison, the quasi-tropical hurricane Zorba, that developed over the Mediterranean Sea at the end of September 2018, is considered. An assessment of factors leading to the origination and intensification of QTCs is carried out, and the predictability of the phenomenon is studied. The authors tried to reduce the analysis to the parameters obtained directly as a result of mesoscale nonhydrostatic modeling. In all the considered cases, the period of active development of cyclones was preceded by the formation of a core of warm air above the sea surface; the moisture inflow from the lateral boundaries was more important in the moisture balance. It is found that coarser spatial resolution predictions are more successful for large QTCs.

Recent increases in boreal forest burned area, which have been linked with climate warming, highlight the need to better understand the composition of wildfire emissions and their atmospheric impacts. Here we quantified emission factors for CO and CH 4 from a massive regional fire complex in interior Alaska during the summer of 2015 using continuous high-resolution trace gas observations from the Carbon in Arctic Reservoirs Vulnerability Experiment (CRV) tower in Fox, Alaska. Averaged over the 2015 fire season, the mean CO / CO 2 emission ratio was 0.142 ± 0.051, and the mean CO emission factor was 127 ± 40 g kg −1 dry biomass burned. The CO / CO 2 emission ratio was about 39 % higher than the mean of previous estimates derived from aircraft sampling of wildfires from boreal North America. The mean CH 4 / CO 2 emission ratio was 0.010 ± 0.004, and the CH 4 emission factor was 5.3 ± 1.8 g kg −1 dry biomass burned, which are consistent with the mean of previous reports. CO and CH 4 emission ratios varied in synchrony, with higher CH 4 emission factors observed during periods with lower modified combustion efficiency (MCE). By coupling a fire emissions inventory with an atmospheric model, we identified at least 34 individual fires that contributed to trace gas variations measured at the CRV tower, representing a sample size that is nearly the same as the total number of boreal fires measured in all previous field campaigns. The model also indicated that typical mean transit times between trace gas emission within a fire perimeter and tower measurement were 1–3 d, indicating that the time series sampled combustion across day and night burning phases. The high CO emission ratio estimates reported here provide evidence for a prominent role of smoldering combustion and illustrate the importance of continuously sampling fires across time-varying environmental conditions that are representative of a fire season.

Coastal regions are generally densely populated and have become highly vulnerable to the occurrence of extreme events. In recent years, Brazil’s southern coastal region has been affected by several different extreme weather events that have caused coastal flooding, with economic losses as well as fatalities. Understanding and improving the predictability of these events has become a major issue for the local population. In this study, state-of-the-art numerical modeling was applied to this region to assess the ability of the Ocean-Land Atmosphere Model to represent major extreme events. The model was applied to the region with a high-resolution grid refinement technique capable of simultaneously representing global and local atmospheric phenomena. The main events that affected Brazil’s southern coastal region between 2000 and 2018 were identified and then simulated. All selected events were associated with cyclonic and/or anticyclonic systems near the coastal region of the study area. Those systems were responsible for bringing heavy rain, strong winds and sea level rise, causing impacts for the coastal region. The results of the numerical simulations were compared with observational data to evaluate model performance. The model simulated well the air temperature and wind fields. Correlation values for sea level pressure were high despite a maximum positive bias of approximately 2 hPa. Precipitation presented a negative bias for most events. Finally, the results show that the methodology allowed for a detailed representation of sensible and latent heat fluxes for the region, allowing a better representation of local mesoscale features.

In cold region, conceptual models assigned precipitation phase, liquid (rain) or solid (snow), cause vastly different atmospheric, hydrological, and ecological responses, along with significant differences in evaporation, runoff, and infiltration fates for measured precipitation mass. A set air temperature threshold (ATT) applied to the over 30% annual precipitation events occurring with surface air temperatures between −3 and 5 °C resulted in 11.0 and 9.8% misclassified precipitation in Norway and Sweden, respectively. Surface air temperatures do not account for atmospheric properties causing precipitation phase changes as snow falls toward the ground. However, cloud base height and relative humidity (RH) measured from the surface can adjust ATT for expected hydrometeor-atmosphere interactions. Applying calibrated cloud base height ATTs or a linear RH function for Norway (Sweden) reduced misclassified precipitation by 4.3% (2.8%) and 14.6% (8.9%) misclassified precipitation, respectively. Cloud base height ATTs had lower miss-rates with low cloud bases, 100 m in Norway and 300 m in Sweden. Combining the RH method with cloud base ATT in low cloud conditions resulted in 16.1 and 10.8% reduction in misclassified precipitation in Norway and Sweden, respectively. Therefore, the conceptual model output should improve through the addition of available surface data without coupling to an atmospheric model. HIGHLIGHTS This paper lays out two new methods to decrease misclassified precipitation in conceptual surface-based models using air temperature thresholds (ATTs) to distinguish between rain and snow, common in hydrological modeling.; The cloud base height method has not been written about in scientific publications and gives another simple solution to help reduce misclassified precipitation phase in surface-based models.; The linear relative humidity ATT formula suggested in this paper simplifies earlier attempts to include relative humidity in surface-based precipitation phase determination.; The information needed for both methods is widely available in surface meteorological reports and improves surface-based models without coupling to an atmospheric model for precipitation phase.; In this paper, misclassified precipitation between −3 and 5 °C was reduced by 4.3% (2.8%) using cloud base height ATTs, 14.6% (8.9%) using a linear relative humidity formula, and 16.1% (10.8%) using a combination of both methods in Norway (Sweden), showing great potential for reducing model uncertainties when applying this work.

A coherent detection Doppler wind lidar (CDWL) system simulation for both ground-based and space-based platforms is established in this study by using the PcModwin and BACKSCAT software to construct an atmospheric model in autumn and winter. Based on the light detection and ranging (LIDAR) equation, the balanced coherent detection principle, the error theory, and the calculation of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the truncation ratio and the single pulse energy under different conditions were optimized. Meanwhile, the wind speed error and the wind direction error of the space-based platform were determined. The simulation results indicate that at an orbit height of 400 km, with the pulse energy at 225 mJ, and the telescope aperture at 1 m, the space-based coherent wind LIDAR could detect the wind speed at the altitude of 0–5 km, and the maximum horizontal wind speed error was 3.7 m/s.

Satellite sounder infrared radiances are among the most important contributions to the global observing system and have been assimilated into global numerical weather prediction (NWP) analyses for many years. They are also used as fundamental climate data records for climate monitoring. Prior to assimilation or producing climate records, the radiances should have all residual instrument biases removed. One way of estimating the mean biases is to continuously monitor the measured radiances against the NWP model equivalent radiances. This article is an extension of one published in 2012 which documented these biases for three years but now the time span of the monitoring has extended to beyond ten years, allowing the long-term stability of the instruments to be assessed. Data from high-resolution infrared sounder (HIRS), Advanced Along Track Scanning Radiometer (AATSR), and Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI), radiometers; atmospheric infrared sounder (AIRS), a spectrometer; and infrared atmospheric sounding interferometer (IASI), an interferometer, were included. Changes in mean biases and standard deviations were used to investigate the temporal stability of the bias and radiometric noise of the instruments over ten years. A double difference technique was employed to remove the effect of changes or deficiencies in the NWP system and radiative transfer (RT) model, which can contribute to the biases. The IASI and AIRS radiances were stable but with a different bias between the two instruments due to different versions of the RT model used. The SEVIRI radiometers were stable in most channels with the exception of the 13.4 $\mu \text{m}$ channel. The HIRS instruments were subject to sudden changes in bias and increases in standard deviation compared with NWP simulations during the past decade.

The air traffic management automation imposes stringent requirements on the weather models, in such a way that they should be able to provide reliable short-time forecasts in digital formats in almost real time. The atmospheric boundary layer is one of the regions where aircraft operation and coordination are critical and therefore atmospheric model performance is also vital. This paper presents conventional and innovative techniques to improve the accuracy in the forecasting of winds in the lower atmospheric layer, proposing mechanisms to develop better models including deterministic and stochastic simulations. Accuracy is improved by optimizing the grid, assimilating observations in cycling simulations and managing a number of ensemble members. An operation-driven post-processing stage helps to incorporate detailed terrain definitions and real-time observations without re-running the model. The improvements are checked against mesoscale weather simulations at different scales and a dedicated flight campaign. The results show good performance of the model without sensitively increasing the required throughput.

Many atmospheric correction schemes of radiance-based optical satellite data require the selection of normalized solar spectral irradiance models at the top of atmosphere (TOA). However, there is no scientific consensus in literature as to which available model is most suitable. This article examines five commonly used models applied to Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) TOA radiance and reflectance products to assess the accuracy and stability between models used to derive surface reflectance products. It is assumed that the calibration of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Landsat 8 OLI TOA reflectance and radiance products are accurate to currently claimed levels. The results show that the retrieved surface reflectance can exhibit significant variations when different solar irradiance models are used, especially in the OLI coastal blue band at 443 nm. From the five solar irradiance models, the Kurucz 2005 model showed the least bias compared with OLI TOA reflectance product and least variance in surface reflectance. Furthermore, improvement was obtained by adjusting the total solar irradiance (TSI) normalization, and additional validation was provided using observed in situ water leaving reflectance data. The results from this article are particularly relevant to aquatic applications and to satellite sensors that provide TOA radiance such as previous Landsat and other current and historical missions.

The Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR) onboard the two Sentinel-3 satellites provides daily global coverage observation at daytime and nighttime. The split-window (SW) algorithm is currently used to retrieve the land surface temperature (LST) from SLSTR images; however, this algorithm has to utilize visible and near-infrared (VNIR) images and land cover to determine pixel emissivity. For nighttime observation, VNIR cannot be observed, and this limitation complicates the LST retrieval from nighttime images using the SW algorithm. This article proposed a three-channel temperature–emissivity separation (TES) algorithm that estimates the nighttime LST and emissivity from one middle-infrared (MIR) and two thermal-infrared (TIR) nighttime Sentinel-3 SLSTR images. The sensitive analysis showed that the algorithm could theoretically retrieve the LST and emissivity with errors less than 0.8 K and 0.015, respectively. Ground validation showed that the nighttime LST retrieval error was approximately 1.84 K and the bias was approximately −0.33 K. Finally, the TES algorithm was applied to obtain the LST and emissivity images over northern China as an example. The emissivity retrieved from the nighttime observation can be used in the daytime SW algorithm to improve its feasibility in the LST retrieval process.

This study assesses the performance of the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model in simulating the Arabian Peninsula summer climate for the period 2001–2016. The European Centre for Medium range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) reanalysis is downscaled using WRF without (CTRL) and with the Spectral Nudging (SPN) method. Our results suggest that the noticeable cold biases in surface temperatures (mean, minimum, and maximum) over the Arabian Peninsula in CTRL are significantly reduced in SPN. The seasonal patterns of surface pressure, cloud cover, lower and upper tropospheric circulation, and mid-tropospheric anticyclone are also simulated more realistically with SPN. The evaluation of mean vertical profiles of dynamical and thermo-dynamical features over the Arabian Peninsula further confirms the enhanced simulations with SPN with respect to CTRL. Though SPN captures better the observed evolution of rainfall compared to that of CTRL, it produces a positive rainfall bias over the Southwestern Arabian Peninsula. Stronger vertical motions associated with the local topography enhance the higher water vapor loading, condenses in the upper layers, and results in excess amount of rainfall in SPN. Furthermore, with SPN, WRF is further able to better simulate the synoptic features of heat waves. Overall, SPN enhances WRF simulation skill of the horizontal structures and vertical profiles of the Arabian Peninsula summer climate by enforcing a better balance between the small and large scale features and associated feedbacks.

The effects of sea surface temperature (SST) on ocean radar backscattering are investigated under both the neutral and nonneutral atmospheric conditions for the applications of wind retrieval. The impact factors are parameterized as functions of SST. The SST effects on the variations in ocean scattering and wind retrieval are evaluated using an analytic model which combines the KHCC03 spectrum and the second-order small slope approximation (SSA-II) model. Under the neutral condition, we present the following new insights at three commonly used bands: 1) the seawater permittivity accounts for a dominant effect of SST at the L-band. The SST effects induce a wind underestimation of 0.3 m/s over cold seawater and a wind overestimation of 0.24 m/s over warm seawater at the L-band and a wind speed of 8 m/s. The seawater viscosity plays a significant role in the SST effects on ocean scattering at the C- and Ku-bands, while its variation induced by SST has insignificant effects on L-band scattering; 2) for the C-band, the SST-induced wind retrieval error can be neglected at a medium wind speed due to the neutralization of the effects of various factors on surface roughness. Yet, the SST effects are not negligible at low and high wind speeds; and 3) both the dielectric and dynamic factors play significant roles in the SST effects on ocean scattering at the Ku-band. Under the nonneutral condition, the simulation results show that the air–sea interaction governs the SST effects on ocean scattering and wind velocity variations. Other than the air–sea interaction, the wind retrieval errors induced by other SST-related factors are negligible at the L- and C-bands.

In this study, we designed a sensitivity test using the half number concentration of sulfate in the nucleation calculation process to study the aerosol-cloud interaction (ACI) of sulfate on clouds, precipitation, and monsoon intensity in the summer over the eastern China monsoon region (ECMR) with the National Center for Atmospheric Research Community Atmosphere Model version 5. Numerical experiments show that the ACI of sulfate led to an approximately 30% and 34% increase in the cloud condensation nuclei and cloud droplet number concentrations, respectively. Cloud droplet effective radius below 850 hPa decreased by approximately 4% in the southern ECMR, while the total liquid water path increased by 11%. The change in the indirect radiative forcing due to sulfate at the top of the atmosphere in the ECMR during summer was − 3.74 W·m−2. The decreased radiative forcing caused a surface cooling of 0.32 K and atmospheric cooling of approximately 0.3 K, as well as a 0.17 hPa increase in sea level pressure. These changes decreased the thermal difference between the land and sea and the gradient of the sea-land pressure, leading to a weakening in the East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) and a decrease in the total precipitation rate in the southern ECMR. The cloud lifetime effect has a relatively weaker contribution to summer precipitation, which is dominated by convection. The results show that the ACI of sulfate was one possible reason for the weakening of the EASM in the late 1970s.

The Micro-Sized Microwave Atmospheric Satellite (MicroMAS-2A) is a 3U CubeSat that launched in January 2018 as a technology demonstration for future microwave sounding constellation missions, such as the NASA Time-Resolved Observations of Precipitation structure and storm Intensity with a Constellation of Smallsats (TROPICS) mission now in development. MicroMAS-2A has a miniaturized 1U 10-channel passive microwave radiometer with channels near 90, 118, 183, and 206 GHz for moisture and temperature profiling and precipitation imaging [4]. MicroMAS-2A provided the first CubeSat atmospheric vertical sounding data from orbit and to date is the only CubeSat to provide temperature and moisture sounding and surface imaging. In this paper, we analyze six segments of data collected from MicroMAS-2A in April 2018 and compare them to ERA5 reanalysis fields coupled with the Community Radiative Transfer Model (CRTM). This initial assessment of CubeSat radiometric accuracy shows biases relative to ERA5 with magnitudes ranging from 0.4 to 2.2 K (with standard deviations ranging from 0.7 to 1.2 K) for the four mid-tropospheric temperature channels and biases of 2.2 and 2.8 K (standard deviations 1.8 and 2.6 K) for the two lower tropospheric water vapor channels., NASA (Award NNX16AM73H)

The visible-shortwave infrared Advanced Hyperspectral Imager (AHSI) is a payload onboard the Gaofen-5 satellite, which is China’s first hyperspectral satellite and is part of the Chinese High-Resolution Earth Observation System. As a supplement to the onboard radiometric calibration of the AHSI instrument, vicarious calibration is also required, which is independent of the instrument-based calibration. In this article, a reflectance-based vicarious calibration approach is presented, which takes surface reflectance data, aerosol data, and atmospheric water vapor data into account. The Dunhuang test site, which is one of the China Radiometric Calibration Sites (CRCS) for the vicarious calibration of spaceborne sensors, possesses stable, uniform, and measurable surface objects, so it was chosen as the radiation source to replace the laboratory and onboard calibrators. A Spectra Vista Corporation (SVC) spectral radiometer and a CE318 sun photometer were utilized for the measurement of the surface reflectance and the condition of the aerosol, respectively. The radiance at the entrance pupil at the top of atmosphere was then obtained through the MODerate resolution atmospheric TRANsmission (MODTRAN) atmospheric transmission model. The surface reflectance was obtained using the Fast Line-of-sight Atmospheric Analysis of Hypercubes (FLAASH) atmospheric model for validation. The results show that, with regard to the calibration coefficients, the calibrated AHSI instrument presents a stable radiometric performance among different land-cover types. The ratios on all the bands are between 0.8 and 1.2 and are consistent with the reflectance data from the Dunhuang test site. The ${R} ^{{2}}$ values are all greater than 0.95 and the spectral angle is all less than 2°. The standard deviations of the ratios are less than 3% for each chosen band, which proves that the calibrated data have a high consistency with the in situ measurements. When compared with Landsat 8 and Sentinel-2, the mean errors of the surface reflectance are all under 0.06, which further demonstrates that the calibrated reflectance has a high accuracy.

Incorporation of mid-wave infrared (MWIR) channel/s into the prevalent regression-based split-window technique (SWT) for operational daytime sea surface temperature (SST) retrieval is challenging. However, the MWIR channels are highly desirable to obtain unambiguous information from the surface since these channels offer high transparency with respect to the earth’s atmosphere and are very sensitive to the thermal emission from the surface. On the other hand, the MWIR channel/s can be easily incorporated into any physical-based SST retrieval scheme. Daytime SST retrieval using various physical-based methods is studied and it is found that the physical deterministic sea surface temperature (PDSST) retrieval scheme is the best choice. This article discusses various scientific aspects of the daytime PDSST retrieval including MWIR channels from a theoretical point of view and its application on real data from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-Aqua. Daytime SST retrievals from PDSST, including MWIR channels, are also compared with the currently operational SWT-based SSTs from MODIS-Aqua and MODIS-Terra by NASA, without MWIR channels. The root-mean-square differences in PDSST from the in situ buoys using the global matchup data for daytime MODIS-Aqua SSTs is ~0.28 K for complete cloud-free set and is ~0.38 K for MODIS-Aqua and MODIS-Terra when quasi-deterministic cloud and error masking algorithm is applied for cloud detection. The information gain is defined by combining the two metrics, quality improvement and the increase in cloud-free data. The PDSST suite rendered two to three times as much information as the NASA-produced daytime regression-based SST.

Accurate cloud detection using infrared (IR) data is very challenging due to the limitations and uncertainties from many aspects in the satellite IR remote sensing. This article proposes an end-to-end cloud detection method for the Cross-track IR Sounder (CrIS) using machine learning (ML) techniques. The brightness temperatures from paired CrIS channels in the longwave and midwave water vapor bands and the longwave and shortwave CO2 bands are used. After obtaining the linear regression coefficients for each of the selected channel pairs, a complete set of CrIS full spectral resolution (FSR) cloud detection index (FCDI) is derived from the temperature difference between the regression and observation for each channel pair. It is shown that FCDI captures cloud location and structure well by comparing with the cloud products (CPs) from the Visible IR Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). After collocating FCDI with VIIRS CP, ML techniques such as the extreme learning machine, support vector machine, and multilayer perceptron are used to train the collocated FCDIs for cloud detection. Simulation results show that the accuracy of FCDI cloud detection is slightly above 80%. Moreover, the results encourage the use of water vapor bands in FCDI, in addition to CO2 bands.

Since a new generation of geostationary satellite data has incredibly high temporal, spatial, and spectral resolutions, new methodologies are now needed to take advantage of both the temporal and spectral signatures of them for accurate estimation of Earth’s environmental variables. This article describes a novel optimization method to estimate a suite of 11 physically consistent land surface and atmospheric variables under all-sky conditions from the geostationary advanced Himawari imager (AHI) top-of-atmosphere (TOA) observations. This method is based on a coupled soil, snow, vegetation, and atmospheric radiative transfer (RT) model from 0.28 to $14~\mu \text{m}$ . The inversion algorithm consists of three major steps. First, the “clearest” observations at each moment during a temporal window were determined and then the essential variables that characterize surface RT models, such as leaf area index (LAI), leaf chlorophyll concentration, and soil parameters were estimated. Second, the atmospheric variables, including aerosol optical depth (AOD) under clear-sky conditions, and cloud optical thickness (COT) and cloud effective particle radius (CER) under cloudy-sky conditions, were inverted given surface reflectance calculated by the surface RT models. Finally, the inverted atmospheric and land surface variables were fed into the coupled RT model to calculate the remaining set of variables, including spectral directional reflectance, surface broadband albedo, thermal emissivity, incident shortwave radiation (ISR), photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), fraction of absorbed PAR by green vegetation (FAPAR), and TOA shortwave albedo. The retrieved variables were validated using in-situ measurements from Ozflux network sites and compared with the other existing satellite products. Intercomparisons demonstrate that the AHI-retrieved atmospheric variables (AOD, CER, and COT) and surface variables (surface reflectance, LAI, FAPAR, PAR, and surface emissivity) are well correlated with the corresponding JAXA released AHI, NASA Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES), and the Global LAnd Surface Satellite (GLASS) products. Direct validation using in-situ measurements indicates that the retrieved ISR achieves higher accuracy than the CERES ISR product (with $R^{2}$ values of 0.95 and 0.89, and root-mean-square error (RMSE) of 20.3 and 29.6 W/ $\text{m}^{2}$ for the AHI-retrieved and CERES daily ISR, respectively). Validation also shows that the estimated daily surface albedo has an accuracy comparable to the MODIS daily albedo product (RMSE = 0.03). Both the direct validation and product comparisons have demonstrated that this proposed inversion framework works very well for the AHI data. Unlike other algorithms that are usually used for estimating an individual parameter and rely heavily on a separate atmospheric correction, this inversion framework can effectively estimate a group of atmospheric and land surface variables and be easily applied to other similar multispectral geostationary satellite data. A comprehensive sensitivity and validation study is still needed to quantify the uncertainties of the retrieval variables.

The monsoon-driven river basins are more vulnerable to the flash-floods triggered by intense rainfall activities. Due to the lack of adequate high resolution forecast of real-time hydro-meteorological variables, a reliable forecast of flash floods remains a challenge. One plausible way to generate such a high-resolution forecast of hydro-meteorological variables is to use a coupled atmospheric–hydrologic modelling system. Thus, in this study, a physically-based, fully distributed, multi-scale hydrologic modelling framework, WRF-Hydro with optimized configurations (stand-alone and coupled-mode) is used to simulate the important hydro-meteorological variables like precipitation, runoff, soil moisture, and land surface heat fluxes over Cauvery river basin, India. In stand-alone mode, the model is driven by the high-resolution gridded data from the Global Land Data Assimilation System; while the coupled model is run with the WRF atmospheric model. In this study, the ability of a fully coupled WRF–WRF-Hydro modelling framework , with 3 km grid spacing is used to simulate the hydro-meteorological conditions during an extreme rainfall event (08–09 August 2019). The innermost domain of WRF-Hydro in conjunction with a high resolution hydrological routing grid (300 m) is also utilized, to include the subgrid scale disaggregation–aggregation weighting procedures to generate the land–atmospheric feedbacks on the hydrometeorological variables. The resulting variables have been validated through relevant observations; the overall performance of the coupled WRF-Hydro is shown to be relatively good when compared to the WRF-only simulations.

To assess the impact of four-dimensional variational (4D-Var) data assimilation on the performance of a land–atmosphere coupled model, the satellite precipitation of the Integrated Multisatellite Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG) was assimilated into the Weather Research Forecast (WRF) Model, and the WRF was coupled to the hydrological model TOPX. Precipitation and evaporation were both investigated as connecting elements in the coupled model WRF–TOPX. Differing in whether the 4D-Var data assimilation and evaporation were applied, one control experiment and four experiments were performed to simulate a historical flood event that happened in the Wangjiaba watershed in eastern China. The key hydrological variables of precipitation, potential evaporation, soil moisture, and discharge in the studied flood process were evaluated. The results showed that 1) the 4D-Var data assimilation with the IMERG could reduce both the overestimations of the WRF-predicted precipitation and potential evaporation; 2) the applied 4D-Var data assimilation could improve considerably the accuracy of the soil moisture and discharges from the coupled model WRF–TOPX; and 3) evaporation was also an important factor to influence the net precipitation to affect the performance of the coupled land–atmosphere model. With the two connecting elements of precipitation and evaporation, the 4D-Var assimilation based on IMERG could improve the Nash–Sutcliffe coefficient of the coupled model WRF–TOPX from 0.483 to 0.521 at the hourly scale. These investigations can provide important implications for the land–atmosphere coupling with both the precipitation and evaporation and using the 4D-Var data assimilation with IMERG for flood simulation at a large scale.

Sea salt aerosol (SSA) significantly affects the atmospheric albedo, the radiation balance of the Earth, and has consequences for global and regional climate. There is currently no reliable radiative large-scale aerosol model of the marine and coastal atmosphere. All these lead to uncertainties in radiation boxes, short-term weather forecasts, and climate models and to uncertainties in interpretation of the lidar return data obtained and at the development of new lidar systems. The MaexPro model is shown to calculate adequately the aerosol extinction coefficients $\varepsilon (\lambda)$ and the concentration of SSA particles for different wind regimes, fetches, and humidity. The calculated $\varepsilon (\lambda)$ profiles well agree with the experimental data and with calculations using Advanced Navy Aerosol Model (ANAM) and MODTRAN codes. A new approach in studying the influence of the meteorological parameters on spectral $\varepsilon (\lambda)$ gives a new explanation for previously obtained conflicting experimental data, namely, to the effect of decreasing transparency, manifested in the coastal zone, and makes it possible indirectly to account for the type of air mass (marine or coastal). It is shown that the particle size distribution functions and spectral $\varepsilon (\lambda)$ , calculated using the model with the input parameters corresponding most closely to the conditions of experiment, agree well with observations, using OLAF transmissometer, and calculations using MODTRAN code and the experimental results receiving the same conditions of observations (numerical or field). The results obtained are of interest both in the calculations of radiative characteristics of the atmosphere and in interpretation of the lidar return data and calibration signal when developing new lidar systems.

A stochastic deep convection parameterization is implemented into the US Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) Atmosphere Model version 1.0 (EAMv1). This study evaluates its performance in simulating precipitation. Compared to the default model, the probability distribution function (PDF) of rainfall intensity in the new simulation is greatly improved. The well-known problem of “too much light rain and too little heavy rain” is alleviated, especially over the tropics. As a result, the contribution from different rain rates to the total precipitation amount is shifted toward heavier rain. The less frequent occurrence of convection contributes to suppressed light rain, while more intense large-scale and convective precipitation contributes to enhanced heavy total rain. The synoptic and intraseasonal variabilities of precipitation are enhanced as well to be closer to observations. The sensitivity of the rainfall intensity PDF to the model vertical resolution is examined. The relationship between precipitation and dilute convective available potential energy in the stochastic simulation agrees better with that in the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) observations compared with the standard model simulation. The annual mean precipitation is largely unchanged with the use of the stochastic scheme except over the tropical western Pacific, where a moderate increase in precipitation represents a slight improvement. The responses of precipitation and its extremes to climate warming are similar with or without the stochastic deep convection scheme.

Investigating the relations between land surface temperature (LST) and biophysical compositions can help the understanding of the surface biophysical process. However, there are still uncertainties in determining the impacts of biophysical compositions on LST due to the atmospheric effects. In this article, four atmospheric correction algorithms were used to correct 12 Landsat 8 images in Xi’an, Beijing, Wuhan, and Guangzhou, China, including the Atmospheric Correction for Flat Terrain (ATCOR2), Quick Atmospheric Correction (QUAC), Fast Line-of-sight Atmospheric Analysis of Spectral Hypercube (FLAASH), and Second Simulation of Satellite Signal in the Solar Spectrum (6S). Then, geodetector was used to investigate the atmospheric correction differences in the spatial heterogeneity relationships between LST and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), normalized difference built-up index (NDBI), and bare soil index (BSI). Results indicate that the selected composition factors were greatly improved after atmospheric correction, and the relations between LST and three factors were characterized by obvious atmospheric correction differences in four study areas. On the whole, the 6S algorithm performed the best in improving the factor values and impacting the spatial heterogeneity relations between LST and biophysical compositions, followed by FLAASH, QUAC, and ATCOR2 algorithms. Except for Wuhan, 6S, FLAASH, and QUAC algorithms significantly enhanced the correlation between LST and NDVI. However, all algorithms weakened the correlations between LST, NDVI, and BSI, except Guangzhou. These findings have been verified using the regression analysis. In addition, with geodetector, combinations of any two composition factors all had strongly enhanced impacts on LST, and a combination between NDVI and NDBI performed the strongest in most cases.

The Sun was dimmer earlier in Earth’s history, but glaciation was rare in the Precambrian: this is the ‘faint young Sun problem’. Most solutions rely on changes to the chemical composition of the atmosphere to compensate via a stronger greenhouse effect, whereas physical feedbacks have received less attention. We perform global climate model experiments, using two versions of the Community Atmosphere Model, in which a reduced solar constant is offset by higher CO2. Model runs corresponding to past climate show a substantial decrease in low clouds and hence planetary albedo compared with present, which contributes 40% of the required forcing to offset the faint Sun. Through time, the climatically important stratocumulus decks have grown in response to a brightening Sun and decreasing greenhouse effect, driven by stronger cloud-top radiative cooling (which drives low cloud formation) and a stronger inversion (which sustains clouds against dry air entrainment from above). We find that systematic changes to low clouds have had a major role in stabilizing climate through Earth’s history, which demonstrates the importance of physical feedbacks on long-term climate stabilization, and a smaller role for geochemical feedbacks. Reduced planetary albedo due to fewer low clouds on early Earth could explain some 40% of the required forcing to offset the faint young Sun, according to global climate model experiments.
