The article discusses the comprehensive environmental assessment (CEA) method. The systematic framework of organizing environmental data such as life cycle assessments and environmental risk assessments in the CEA is described, as well as the meta-assessment of that information to assist in environmental research planning and stakeholder decision-making. The article demonstrates how the CEA approach is used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to address various issues, including engineered nanostructured materials research and biofuel sustainability.
