Packaging waste makes up more than 10% of the landfilled waste in the United States. While consumers often want to make environmentally friendly product choices, we find that their perceptions of the environmental friendliness of product packaging may systematically deviate from its objective environmental friendliness. Eight studies (N = 4,103) document the perceived environmental friendliness (PEF) bias whereby consumers judge plastic packaging with additional paper to be more environmentally friendly than identical plastic packaging without the paper. The PEF bias is driven by consumers' "paper = good, plastic = bad" beliefs and by proportional reasoning, wherein packaging with a greater paper-to-plastic proportion is judged as more environmentally friendly. We further show that the PEF bias impacts consumers' willingness to pay and product choice. Importantly, this bias can be mitigated by a "minimal packaging sticker" intervention, which increases the environmental friendliness perceptions of plastic-only packaging, rendering plastic-packaged products to be preferable to their plastic-plus-paper-packaged counterparts. This research contributes to the packaging literature in marketing and to research on sustainability while offering practical implications for managers and public policy officials. • The content of potentially toxic metal in KB and PB was low. • Terminal temperature remarkably affected the morphology of potentially toxic metals in biochar. • PB and KB were not hazardous waste with low environmental risk. • PB and KB can fix potentially toxic metal in Tibet soil admirably. This study investigated the morphology and potentially toxic metal concentrations of paper waste-based biochar (PB) and kitchen waste-based biochar (KB) obtained at 500 and 700 °C. The morphology and potentially toxic metals (Cr, Mn, Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, Ag, and Ba) concentrations in the biochars were determined by SEM and FT-IR analysis. The Cr, Mn, Cu, and Cd concentrations in PB were low, while the Ba content was relatively high at 0.1 mg∙kg−1. An increase in the terminal temperature led to an increase in the concentrations of Fe/Mn oxide-bound potentially toxic metals of PB, and a decrease in the concentrations of organic matter-bound potentially toxic metals. The Fe/Mn oxide-bound Cr, Mn, Cu, Pb, and Zn concentrations of KB decreased with an increase in the terminal temperature. Therefore, increasing the terminal temperature could reduce the bioavailability of potentially toxic metals in PB and KB. The environmental risk of the different biochars when used for soil remediation was assessed by the potential ecological risk index (RI), and a case study of a Tibetan soil was also conducted. The potentially toxic metal concentrations leached from both PB and KB were lower than the relevant standards. The findings showed that both PB and KB can be safely used for soil remediation. Recycling is an example of a sustainable process within the proclaimed circular economy, and paper is the most recycled material in the world. The new conditions imposed by the Covid-19 crisis put the pulp and paper industry to the challenge of coping with emerging difficulties and maintaining its position in individual sub-sectors. Agro-based pulp and paper mills (PPMs) inevitably produce numerous refractory pollutants in their wastewater, including chlorolignin, chlorophenols, chlorocatechols, chloroguaiacol, cyanide, furan, dioxins, and other organic compounds, as well as various heavy metals, such as nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), etc. These pollutants pose significant threats to aquatic and terrestrial life due to their cytogenotoxicity, mutagenicity, impact on sexual organs, hormonal interference, endocrine disruption, and allergenic response. Consequently, it is crucial to reclaim pulp paper mill wastewater (PPMW) with high loads of refractory pollutants through effective and environmentally sustainable practices to minimize the presence of these chemicals and ensure environmental safety. However, there is currently no comprehensive published review providing up-to-date knowledge on the fate of refractory pollutants from PPMW in soil and aquatic environments, along with valuable insights into the associated health hazards and remediation methods. This critical review aims to shed light on the potential adverse effects of refractory pollutants from PPMW on natural ecosystems and living organisms. It explores existing effective treatment technologies for remediating these pollutants from wastewater, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each approach, all in pursuit of environmental safety. Special emphasis is placed on emerging technologies used to decontaminate wastewater discharged from PPMs, ensuring the preservation of the environment. Additionally, this review addresses the major challenges and proposes future research directions for the proper disposal of PPMW. It serves as a comprehensive source of knowledge on the environmental toxicity and risks associated with refractory pollutants in PPMW, making it a valuable reference for policymakers and researchers when selecting appropriate technologies for remediation. One of the most promising recycling procedures of some industrial organic wastes, as paper mill sludge (PMS), is soil amendment. In this field of application, PMS and natural soil are mixed together according to specific regulations to avoid potential environmental risks that can arise after land restoration, and hence, the mixture must be scrupulously characterized and evaluated, also by means of different analytical techniques. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (H NMR) is a powerful, noninvasive and nondestructive technique to investigate natural and artificial porous media, and it is a promising tool to characterize amended soils as well, also in the light of the experimental difficulties that these materials generally entail. In this work, NMR micro- and macro-porosity were related to total organic carbon (TOC) content, and information on the behavior of organic matter (OM) contained inside the mineral matrix was obtained. In particular, a high presence of TOC shows that micropores are forbidden to the saturating water, giving evidence of OM interactions with soil microstructure. The Journal of Natural Resources Research (NRR) has, since its foundation in 1992, published and continues to publish peer-reviewed articles that make significant impact on resourcing future generations. This is in keeping with its aims and scope of publishing articles on quantitative analyses of natural (mainly but not limited to mineral) resources with regard to exploration, evaluation and exploitation, as well as environmental and risk-related aspects. However, the new papers introduced in this special issue of NRR are mostly qualitative studies with implications for policy decision-making relevant to the issue of resourcing future generations. These new papers and the recent inclusion of NRR for coverage in the Science Citation Index Expanded™ (or SciSearch®) and Journal Citation Reports® (JCR) Science Edition will make NRR more attractive to researchers in the fields that are relevant to the issue of resourcing future generations, both as a source of knowledge as well as a medium for publication of research results. Environmental risks connected with the combustion of paper/cardboard briquettes are still not sufficiently known. This paper aims to bring attention to the risks related to the utilisation of paper briquettes in local boilers and to characterise these risks by means of the identification of organic compounds in deposits from exhaust flues. The identification of the chemical compounds was performed by pyrolysis gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. Paper/cardboard briquettes contain 119 compounds of biogenic origin derived from major biomass components and 53 additives. Additives are used both for improving the properties of paper and in printing inks. By burning the paper briquettes, the same 53 compounds from the additive group were caught in the deposits from the flue gas pathway, occurring in the range of 1–10% of the concentration of individual compounds (additives) contained in the input fuel. Compounds that are very stable during the combustion process have an enrichment factor (EF) > 30, which corresponded to approximately 3% of the additive capture in deposits. The highest values were found for plasticisers (phthalates). Many of the primary organic compounds contained in the input raw material do not decompose during combustion and can have adverse effects on human health. A number of studies have investigated the potential toxicity of the analgesic agent diclofenac (DCF) in various fish species under a diverse array of experimental conditions. Reported evidence of toxicity in these investigations is often strongly reliant on morphologic end points such as histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and transmission electron microscopy. However, it may be challenging for scientists who perform environmental hazard or risk determination to fully appreciate the intricacies of these specialized endpoints. Therefore, the purpose of the current review was to critically assess the quality of morphologic data in 14 papers that described the experimental exposure of fish to DCF. Areas of focus during this review included study design, diagnostic accuracy, magnitude of reported changes, data interpretation and presentation, and the credibility of individual reported findings. Positive attributes of some studies included robust experimental designs, accurate diagnoses, and straightforward and transparent data reporting. Issues identified in certain articles included diagnostic errors, failure to account for sampling and/or observer bias, failure to evaluate findings according to sex, exaggeration of lesion severity, interstudy inconsistencies, unexplained phenomena, and incomplete or ambiguous data presentation. Waste electrical and electronic equipment have the potential environmental risks and resource value simultaneously. So the product recycling is very important. This paper studies on recycling problems of WEEE under the third-party recycling in a closed-loop supply chain. We take the following measures. Firstly, based on classifying the WEEE, we consider a revenue sharing and cost sharing contract as the coordination mechanism. Secondly, under centralized and decentralized decisions, we use the game analysis technology to determine the optimal pricing and profits, respectively. Finally, we conduct the number simulation to illustrate and validate the proposed models and provide managerial insights. The results show that when retailers sell new and second-hand products simultaneously, consumers become more sensitive to recycling prices, the profits of manufacturers, recyclers and CLSC increase. This document is a discussion of the original paper titled "Coastal Defense Megaprojects in an Era of Sea-Level Rise: Politically Feasible Strategies or Army Corps Fantasies?" by D. J. Rasmussen, Robert E. Kopp, and Michael Oppenheimer. The authors review coastal defense megaprojects with storm surge barriers in the United States and discuss their feasibility. They compare the findings of the original paper with experiences from the implementation of coastal megaprojects in the Netherlands and identify key factors crucial for their feasibility and realization. This paper begins by establishing a three-party game model involving three key players: the insurer, the firm, and the government. This model is used to analyze the utility of each party in various scenarios, one of which encourages green innovation within the firm. According to this model, when the insurer rejects insurance coverage and the government maintains a neutral stance on environmental liability insurance, the firm may opt to engage in green innovation. Green innovation fundamentally serves as a mechanism to mitigate environmental pollution risks stemming from the firm's operational processes. In cases where the insurer declines underwriting, it becomes rational for the firm to enhance its risk management through green innovation, which can be viewed as a mitigating factor in the context of environmental liability insurance. To comprehensively examine the overall impact of environmental liability insurance on the green innovation endeavors of firms, we use a mediation effect model utilizing firm-level data from heavily polluting industries. This paper delves into the intricate relationship between environmental liability insurance and the capacity of heavily polluting firms to engage in green innovation, along with the mediating influence of financing constraints between these two factors. The findings of this analysis suggest that the acquisition of environmental liability insurance enhances the green innovation capabilities of firms operating in heavily polluting industries by alleviating financing constraints, serving as a mediating factor in this regard. There is a high measure of agreement on the key issues concerning gene–environment interdependence. Contrary to arguments on the need for direct exact replication of findings, it is suggested that “robust” replication using the same constructs is needed. RCTs have an important role for testing for environmental mediation but cannot be used for environmental risks in childhood that show G×E in relation to adult outcomes. Instead, greater use needs to be made of natural experiments. Experimental methods are needed to study biological mediating mechanisms and these should include both animal models and human brain imaging studies. In addition to further research on G×E, further studies of gene–environment correlations are required. Many challenges remain but the future for gene–environment interdependence is bright. Following up the previously published systematic review on the same topic and realizing that new studies and evidence had emerged on the matter, we conducted an update on the same research terms. With the objective of updating the information relating environmental risk factors on neurodegenerative diseases and the geographic approaches used to address them, we searched PubMed, Web of Science and Scopus for all scientific studies considering the following three domains: neurodegenerative disease, environmental atmospheric factor and geographical analysis, using the same keywords as in the previously published systematic review. From February 2020 to February 2023, 35 papers were included versus 34 in the previous period, with dementia (including Alzheimer's disease) being the most focused disease (60.0%) in this update, opposed to multiple sclerosis on the last review (55.9%). Also, environmental pollutants such as PM2.5 and NO2 have gained prominence, being represented in 65.7% and 42.9% of the new studies, opposed to 9.8% and 12.2% in the previous review, compared to environmental factors such as sun exposure (5.7% in the update vs 15.9% in the original). The mostly used geographic approach remained the patient's residence (82.9% in the update vs 21.2% in the original and 62.3% in total), and remote sensing was used in 45.7% of the new studies versus 19.7% in the original review, with 42.0% of studies using it globally, being the second most common approach, usually to compute the environmental variable. Purpose: The numerous spoil grounds brought about by mega transportation infrastructure projects which can be influenced by the ecological environment. To achieve better management of spoil grounds, this paper aims to assess their comprehensive risk levels and categorize them into different categories based on ecological environmental risks. Design/methodology/approach: Based on analysis of the environmental characteristics of spoil grounds, this paper first comprehensively identified the ecological environmental risk factors and developed a risk assessment index system to quantitatively describe the comprehensive risk levels. Second, this paper proposed a comprehensive model to determine the risk assessment and categorization of spoil ground group in mega projects integrating improved projection pursuit clustering (PPC) method and K-means clustering algorithm. Finally, a case study of a spoil ground group (includes 50 spoil grounds) in a mega infrastructure project in western China is presented to demonstrate and validate the proposed method. Findings: The results show that our proposed comprehensive model can efficiently assess and categorize the spoil grounds in the group based on their comprehensive ecological environmental risk. In addition, during the process of risk assessment and categorization of spoil grounds, it is necessary to distinguish between sensitive factors and nonsensitive factors. The differences between different categories of spoil grounds can be recognized based on nonsensitive factors, and high-risk spoil grounds which need to be focused more on can be identified according to sensitive factors. Originality/value: This paper develops a comprehensive model of risk assessment and categorization of a group of spoil grounds based on their ecological environmental risks, which can provide a reference for the management of spoil grounds in mega projects. Bridge construction collapse is one of the most common bridge safety accidents. At present, evaluation results are often affected by the ability and experience of the assessor. Therefore, it is difficult to quickly, accurately and effectively evaluate the risk in the process of bridge construction. Moreover, key factors that can prevent accidents can hardly find from the existing bridge construction safety management and evaluation method. This paper analyzes and classifies the artificial and environmental risk factors that affect the bridge construction stage, and establishes 26 risk factors in 5 categories according to the characteristics of bridge construction and the actual situation of the project. Random forest (RF) algorithm is a non-parametric machine learning method based on decision tree, which does not need to be scored by experts in advance and avoids the influence of subjective factors. Compared with other analysis methods, random forest algorithm has the advantages of accurate and robust risk assessment results. Based on the advantages of random forest algorithm and the characteristics of bridge construction risk, this paper uses random forest algorithm to evaluate the bridge construction risk, and ranks the importance of indicators, and identify the index that has a greater influence on the risk. In order to verify the applicability and feasibility of the proposed method, a typical urban complex pedestrian bridge was taken as an example for actual engineering evaluation and verification. Background: The effects of military environmental exposures (MEE) such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), tactile herbicides, airborne hazards and open burn pits (AHOBP), and depleted uranium on health are salient concerns for service members and Veterans. However, little work has been done to investigate the relationship between MEE and risk of breast cancer. Data sources and Methods: We conducted a scoping review on MEE, military deployment/service, and risk of breast cancer among active-duty service members and Veterans. PRISMA was used. PubMed, Embase, and citations of included articles were searched, resulting in 4,364 articles to screen: 28 articles were included. Results: Most papers on military deployment and military service found a lower/equivalent risk of breast cancer when comparing rates to those without deployment or civilians. Exposure to VOCs due to military occupation or contaminated groundwater was associated with a slightly higher risk of breast cancer. Exposure to Agent Orange was not associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. Evidence regarding EDCs was limited. No paper directly measured exposure to AHOBP or depleted uranium, but deployments with known exposures to AHOBP or depleted uranium were associated with an equivalent/lower risk of breast cancer. Conclusions: Women are the fastest growing population within the military, and breast cancer poses a unique risk to women Veterans who were affected by MEE during their service. Unfortunately, the literature on MEE and breast cancer is mixed and limited, in part due to the Healthy Soldier Paradox and poor classification of exposure(s). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In its 26 years of existence, the journal of Natural Resources Research (NRR) has published and continues to publish papers on geochemical anomaly and mineral potential mapping. This is consistent with its aims and scope to publish quantitative studies of natural (mainly but not limited to mineral) resources exploration, evaluation and exploitation, including environmental and risk-related aspects. Over the years, NRR has contributed significantly more to the publication of developments in mineral potential mapping and notably less to the publication of developments in geochemical anomaly mapping. In more detail, NRR has contributed significantly more to the publication of research on development of robust quantitative methods for analysis and synthesis of spatial evidence of mineral potential but notably less to the publication of research on development of geologically focused models of mineral potential. The editorship of NRR recognizes the latter as a challenge to promote further research on development of numerically robust as well as geologically focused mineral potential models, and this special issue is a major initiative in response to that challenge. Smart technologies have dramatically improved environmental risk perception and altered the way organizations share knowledge and communicate. As a result of the increasing amount of data, there is a need for using business intelligence and data mining (DM) approaches to supply chain risk management. This paper proposes a novel environmental supply chain risk management (ESCRM) framework for Industry 4.0, supported by data mining (DM), to identify, assess, and mitigate environmental risks. Through a systematic literature review, this paper conceptualizes Industry 4.0 ESCRM using a DM framework by providing taxonomies for environmental risks, levels, consequences, and strategies to address them. This study proposes a comprehensive guide to systematically identify, gather, monitor, and assess environmental risk data from various sources. The DM framework helps identify environmental risk indicators, develop risk data warehouses, and elaborate a specific module for assessing environmental risks, all of which can generate useful insights for academics and practitioners. Urbanization confronts the dual challenges of water scarcity and environmental degradation, prompting the exploration of diverse water sources for mitigating these impacts. Inter-basin water transfer (IBWT) has emerged as a solution to balance urban water demand and supply in areas with local water shortages. While IBWT can deliver high-quality water over long distances, it is costly, often contributing significantly to carbon emissions. Reclaimed water use (RWU) presents a promising alternative to address this dilemma. In this paper, a valley region of Chongqing municipality in Southwest China, which is confronted with water and environmental risks resulting from rapid urbanization, was explored and discussed as a case study to assess the potential impact of RWU on reducing carbon emissions as compared to IBWT. A method of accumulative accounting was adapted to calculate and sum up carbon emission intensities at various stages, revealing that the operational carbon emission intensities of IBWT and RWU are 0.7447 KgCO2/m3 and 0.1880 KgCO2/m3, respectively. This indicates that RWU substitution can reduce carbon emissions by 0.5567 KgCO2/m3 or 75%. This paper further elucidates the mechanism behind carbon emission reduction, highlighting the energy-saving benefits of using reclaimed water locally without recourse to extensive transportation or elevation changes. Additionally, this result presents three scenarios of reclaimed water use, including urban miscellaneous water, river flow replenishment, and agricultural irrigation in relation to their substitution effects and environmental impacts. Estimates of carbon emission reductions from reclaimed water use were projected at the planned scale, with the maximum potential of reclaimed water utilization predicted. Finally, this paper proposes an enhanced strategy to identify and prioritize factors affecting reclaimed water utilization and the effect of carbon emission reduction. This paper aims to facilitate the establishment of a robust legal, institutional, and managerial framework while fostering interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral cooperation mechanisms in valley urban areas. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most prevalent liver disorder worldwide. Besides factors like genetics and high-calorie diets, environmental pollution also has a great potential to cause NAFLD. This paper reviewed the main mechanisms underlying the NAFLD pathogenesis. Then, the paper also summarized that environmental pollutants can affect the progression of NAFLD by disrupting lipid metabolism through the activation of nuclear receptors, promoting mitochondrial dysfunction, and inducing hepatic inflammation. In addition, the review discusses the increased risk of NAFLD due to environmental pollution exposure during early developmental stages and outlines potential future research directions. This review aims to provide a theoretical foundation and reference for understanding the molecular mechanisms and health risks associated with chronic liver diseases, particularly those linked to environmental pollution. Carbon trading mechanisms and the development of integrated energy systems are important ways to realize the "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality" goal, and the problem of benefit distribution is of paramount importance to achieving the goal. The article innovatively takes the supply side of the provincial integrated energy system as the entry point, considers the economic value of carbon, and focuses on the rational allocation of each subject obtained by comparing different methods. The paper mainly uses the Shapley value of the cooperative game and the kernel method to establish the initial allocation to the main actors, and subsequently, it considers the introduction of the risk level, resource input, environmental pollution, technological innovation, and profit of the main actors to modify the result of the benefit allocation. This paper takes the power generation data of the Xinjiang region as an example, and the results show that 1) thermal power still has the most weight among all power generation modes and obtains 522.83, 503.48, and 406.30 billion yuan under the initial, nucleolus, and modified allocation methods, respectively, and receives the most revenue. 2) Considering that the multi-factor allocation method pays more attention to the allocation of fairness, compared with the initial allocation, thermal power gains decreased by 22.29%, while wind and solar power gains were improved by 17.87% and 60.90%, respectively. The result could be a stronger push for the development and transformation of power energy. 3) The feasibility of this game as a convex game should be verified, the improvement method should be demonstrated through examples, and the results should be compared with reality. Finally, policy recommendations are proposed, which will be useful for realizing the "carbon peaking and carbon neutrality" goal and the synergistic development of integrated energy systems. In this paper, a new timing synchronization algorithm for the main synchronous signal (PSS) is proposed for the risk identification of cross-border e-commerce in the Internet of things, aiming at the problems of poor performance of anti frequency bias and high computational complexity of the improved PSS timing synchronization algorithm. Based on the piecewise correlation algorithm, the normalized frequency deviation of PSS sequence is preset. The segmented ones are pre stored at the terminal by using the conjugate symmetry of PSS sequence. The fast correlation of each segment correlation window is realized by combining convolution and overlapping reservation block method. Then, the threshold judgment is made after the time delay accumulation of the correlation values of the segments is made, so as to complete the joint detection of timing synchronization and coarse frequency deviation. The simulation results show that the algorithm can improve the performance of the system anti frequency offset effectively, reduce the complexity of the calculation and show that the timing synchronization conditions of the Internet can be satisfied. At the same time, under the background of the current development of cross-border logistics, this paper reviews the current research status of Transnational E-commerce logistics and Transnational E-commerce logistics risk. By comparing the advantages and disadvantages of various risk assessment methods, neural network and genetic algorithm are selected as the basic risk assessment methods in this paper. Based on the improved PSS timing synchronization algorithm and the Internet of things, the risk indicators of e-commerce logistics transnational will be selected from five risk dimensions: platform risk, customs clearance risk, organizational risk, process risk and environmental risk. Vietnam is exposed to different types of floods that cause severe economic losses, damage to infrastructure, and loss of life. Reliable information on the drivers, patterns and dynamics of flood risk is crucial for the identification, prioritization and planning of risk reduction and adaptation measures. Here, we present a systematic review of existing flood risk assessments in Vietnam. We evaluate the current status, persisting gaps, and challenges regarding the understanding and assessment of flood risk in the country. The literature review revealed that: (i) 65 % of the reviewed papers did not provide a clear definition of flood risk, (ii) assessments had a tendency to prioritize physical and environmental drivers of risk over social, economic or governance‐related drivers, (iii) future‐oriented assessments tended to focus on hazard and exposure trends, while vulnerability scenarios were often lacking, (iv) large and middle‐sized cities were assessed more frequently than others, (v) only few studies engaged with relevant local stakeholders for the assessment of risk and the development of potential solutions, and (vi) ecosystem‐based adaptation and flood risk insurance solutions were rarely considered. Environmental pollutants are ubiquitous in our environmental media, resulting in detrimental impacts on both humans and the environment. An evidence-based review, particularly a systematic review and meta-analysis, performs a crucial function in assessing the pollution status of pollutants in environmental media at national and global scales. We selected and thoroughly investigated 76 papers focusing on systematic reviews and meta-analyses of contaminants in environmental media. The need to broaden the scope of studies was observed with an increase in the total number of publications, and there were greater focuses on food safety, water pollution, biological pollution, and environmental risks. Furthermore, this review outlined the fundamental procedures involved in a systematic review and meta-analysis, including literature searching, screening of articles, study quality analysis, data extraction and synthesis, and meta-analysis. A meta-analysis typically comprises fixed- and/or random-effects meta-analysis, identifying and measuring heterogeneity, sensitivity analysis, publication bias, subgroup analysis, and meta-regression. We specifically explored the application of meta-analysis to assess the presence of contaminants in environmental media based on two different pollutant categories, namely, non-biological and biological pollutants. The mean value is commonly utilized to assess the pooled concentration of non-biological pollutants, while the prevalence serves as the effect size of biological pollutants. Additionally, we summarized the innovative applications, frequent misuses, and problems encountered in systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
