We studied the bioaccumulation of metals and PAHs, the pathological conditions, regressive phenomena and pathogens in wild Mytilus galloprovincialis taken along the North Pier facing the former second Italian largest steelworks of Bagnoli. There was no Cd and Pb bioaccumulation with respect to the EU role 221/2002. Metal shell index decreased as follows: Pb > Ni > Zn > Cu and correlates with the pollution state. The level of BaP was up to thirtysixfold higher the EU rule 835/2011. The sum of 4 hydrocarbons, PAH4, were up to seventeen-fold the rule. PAH levels increased toward the coast. Prevalence values of tissue necrosis and inflammatory lesions were between 50 and 100%. In May animals showed lesion like granulocytomas and inflammatory capsules. Signs of atresia, necrotic oocytes and diffused cases of hermaphroditism were detected. An appropriate localization of farming to avoid contamination from sediment turbulence and risks for consumer health is needed.

Most of the literature reports on the impact of the former Bagnoli brownfield on the pollution of Bagnoli Bay, embedded in the Gulf of Pozzuoli (GoP). Thus, we studied concentrations, types and sources of sixteen PAHs (EPA) in sediments at 22 sites along 5 transects covering the entire area of GoP. Outstanding levels of PAHs were found, varying from 7.1 μg g−1 to 2.5 E +3 μg g−1. Sediments collected at sites far away from Bagnoli were found to be polluted to a similar extent than those facing the brownfield site, with values > 100 μg g−1. Total PAHs levels in the sediments of GoP were higher by thirty-eleven thousand fold than those reported by other studies from various marine sites in the world. Transit axes of fine and very fine sands and diagnostic indexes revealed a common pyrolytic PAHs pollution spreading from the Bagnoli plant to all GoP.

The Fusaro Lagoon is a shallow lagoon, located in SW Italy, largely influenced in the last decades by several anthropic impacts. The study examined the pollution status of the lagoon, during year 2011-2012 at nine sampling stations with the aim to find out proper measurements of water lagoon restoration. Concentrations of heavy metals (HMs) (aluminium [Al], barium [Ba], cadmium [Cd], copper [Cu], iron [Fe], manganese [Mn], vanadium [V] and zinc [Zn]) were examined in water, sediments and specimens of the ascidian Ciona intestinalis sp. A. Low levels of dissolved oxygen concentration were detected at many stations, with mean values of 5.2-6.4 mg L(-1). The redox potential of surface waters was also low, -2.7 to 50.7 mV. Sediments possessed high organic matter content, 17.7-29.4%. In sediments, the mean Zn level, 251.4 mg kg(-1), was about sixfold higher than that recorded in year 2000 (38.5 mg kg(-1)) and considerably higher than that recorded in 2007 (191 mg kg(-1)). The mean levels of Cd were outstandingly high, with a mean value of 70.5 mg kg(-1), about 30- and 50-fold higher than those determined in 2000 and 2007, respectively. Cadmium (Cd), Cu and nickel (Ni) appeared in excess with respect to most current guidelines, reaching significant pollution levels. C. intestinalis sp. A was detected only at few stations, with metals accumulated preferentially in the body in respect to the tunic, from 1.2 times for Zn (178 mg kg(-1)) to 4.0 times for V (304 mg kg(-1)). Data suggests the necessity of an immediate action of eco-compatible interventions for environmental restoration.

The distribution of metals in surface sediments of Gulf of Pozzuoli (GoP), embedding the former second Italian largest integrated steelworks of Bagnoli, was studied based on sediment dispersal, quality guidelines (SQGs) and quantitative pollution indices of the respective metals. As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Zn largely exceeded the limits. Hg had a mean of 5.8 mg/kg, twentyfold higher the rule, accumulating primarily near Bagnoli site. The mean effective range quotient, m-ERM-Q, revealed a high potential for negative biological effects especially in the area nearby the Bagnoli site. The enrichment factor (EF) values were outstandingly high, > 1.5 with values which were often ≥ 100. The geoaccumulation index, Igeo, was very critical for Cr, Cu, Hg and Ni, showing an Igeo in the range of strongly polluted (4 < Igeo < 5) and very strongly polluted (Igeo > 5). The principal component analysis (PCA) and Pearson's correlation matrix (CM), excluded significant contribution from weathering products.

Since the mid 1980s, Naples and the Campania region have suffered from the dumping of wastes into overfilled landfills. The aim was to characterise a former cave located in Roccarainola (Naples, Italy) for its eventual destination to a controlled landfill site. A detailed hydro-geochemical survey of the area was carried out through drilling of 14 boreholes and four monitoring wells. Samples of water, sediment and soil were analysed for heavy metals and organic contaminants from a dew pond placed in the middle of the cave. The underneath aquifer was also surveyed. The nature of gases emitted from the site was investigated. Results of the geognostic survey revealed the presence of huge volumes of composite wastes, approximately half a million of cubic metre, which accumulated up to a thickness of 25.6 m. In some points, wastes lie below the free surface level of the aquifer. The sampled material from the boreholes revealed levels of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Sn, Tl and Zn exceeding the intervention legal limits. Outstanding loads of Cd, Pb and Zn were found, with levels exceeding of about 50, 100 and 1,870 times the limit. In several points, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon load was extremely high, 35 vs 1 mg kg(-1) of the threshold. The aquifer was also very heavily polluted by Cd, Cr-tot, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn, with impressive high load of Cr and Mn, up to 250-370 times the limits. Hot gases up to 62 °C with presence of xylene and ethylbenzene were found. Results indicated that the site needs an urgent intervention of recovery to avoid compromising the surrounding areas and aquifers of the Campania plain.

The distribution, inventory, and potential risk of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), including Hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), and their correlation with soil properties and anthropogenic factors were investigated in soils of the Campanian Plain. The total concentrations of HCHs and DDTs ranged from 0.03 to 17.3 ng/g (geometric mean: GM = 0.05 ng/g), and 0.08-1231 ng/g (GM = 14.4 ng/g), respectively. In general, the concentration of OCPs in farmland and orchards was higher than on land used for non-agricultural purposes. There are significant differences in the concentration of OCPs in the soils across the region, more specifically, the Acerra-Marigliano conurbation (AMC) and Sarno River Basin (SRB) are recognized as severely OCP-contaminated areas. The recent application of technical HCHs and DDTs in large quantities appears unlikely in light of the ratio of α-HCH/β-HCH and p,p'-DDT/p,p'-DDE, and the prohibition of the use of these chemicals in Italy nearly forty years ago. The clear correlation between the concentration of DDTs and organic carbon suggests a typical secondary distribution pattern. The mass inventory of OCPs in soils of the Campanian Plain is estimated to have a GM of 17.3 metric tons. There is no clear evidence linking the impact of geographical distribution of OCPs on the incidence of cancer, and the 95% confidence interval of total incremental lifetime cancer risk (TILCR) data falls below the internationally accepted benchmark value of 1 × 10(-5).

Sewage sludges obtained from seven wastewater treatment plants from the province of Salamanca, Spain, were periodically sampled to determine seasonal and time variation of their elemental composition over 2000 to 2002. The aim of this paper was to provide additional insight to evaluate the potential environmental impact following soil incorporation of these materials as amendments. Aqua regia extractable metals (pseudo total content) of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were determined and furthermore, the main chemical forms of metals within the sludge were evaluated using a five-step fractionation procedure. All the studied sludges displayed high fertility properties due to their richness of OC, P and K. Total mean concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in the sludges were within the regulation of the Spanish legislation. Using an multifactor analysis of variance, significant differences between Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn pseudo total contents (pb0.01) of sludges at different sites were found while the Cd content was statistically similar. Also significant differences were found between these pseudo total contents of heavy metals in samples collected along the time after three years (0.001bpb0.08) and in samples taken at different seasonal periods (summer and winter) for Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn (0.001bpb0.07). The fractionated metals Cd, Ni and Zn were observed to be in mobile or bioavailable fraction of the sludge up to 35% of total metal content. Cu and Pb distributed in the organically bound fraction up to 25% and 60%, respectively. The Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn in sludges were predominantly bound within the oxide or silicate components. Significant differences between distribution fractions of metals considered together (pb0.001) were found at different years, and for each individual metal, significant differences can be observed between distribution fractions of sludges collected at different sites, times and seasonal periods. The results showed that the studied sludges can potentially enhance soil agronomic properties. The fractionation data indicated that most metals occur in weakly mobile, non-bioavailable form, and only Cd, could have potential moderate mobility in soil–water system.

A vertical engineered barrier (VEB) coupled with a water treatment plant was surveyed in the framework of a vast remedial action at the brownfield site of the former ILVA of Bagnoli steel making facility located in western Naples, Italy. The VEB was put in place to minimize contaminant migration from the brownfield site toward the sea at the shorelines sites of Bagnoli and Coroglio. The efficiency of the VEB was monitored through 12 piezometers, 8 at the Bagnoli shoreline and 4 at the Coroglio shoreline. Concentrations of inorganic and organic pollutants were examined in upstream and downstream groundwater relative to the VEB. The mean levels of Al, As, Fe, and Mn largely exceeded the legal limits, 10-15-fold, whereas that of Hg was up to 3-fold the rules. The VEB decreased the outlet concentrations only at certain specific location of the barrier, four times for Al, 6-fold for Hg, and by 20% for Mn with means largely exceeding the rules. At the other sites, the downstream water showed marked increases of the pollutants up to 3-fold. Outstanding levels of the hydrocarbons > 12 were detected in the inlet water with means of some hundred times the limits at both sites. Likewise most of screened inorganic pollutants, the downstream water showed marked increases of the hydrocarbons up to ~113%. The treatment plant was very effective, with removal efficiencies >80% for As, Al, Fe, and Mn. The study evidenced the need to put alternative groundwater remedial actions.

We studied the contamination level of the soils of the Sarno River basin in southwestern Italy by combined acute toxicity test with Dapnia magna and chemical extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). For the ecotoxicological assessment, 188 samples were taken and coincided with those of a previous study (2013) where heavy metals were surveyed. For the organics assessment, 21 samples were selected nearby representative areas of elevated anthropic pressure. About 10.1 % of the samples showed noticeable sign of D. magna mortality, 61-100 %, and fall along the potentially floatable areas of Sarno and Solofrana basins with high degree of contamination by Cr, As, Zn, and Hg. High levels of ecotoxicity, 61-100 %, were determined in the lower Sarno River basin in areas of moderate or low degree of contamination by Cd, Cu Hg, Pb, Sb, Sn, and Zn. Benzo(a) pyrene, indenopyrene, and benzo(g,h,i) perylene were present at concentrations of 0.32, 0.23, and 0.18 mg kg(-1), respectively, 2- to 3-fold the law limits with most of the samples falling nearby the points where the ecotoxicity output was close to 100%. Among OCPs, pp'-DDT had a mean of 0.225 mg kg(-1) and hence about more than 200- and 2-fold the residential, 0.01 mg kg(-1), and commercial/industrial limits, 0.1 mg kg(-1) and determined-mainly in the central Sarno valley in an area where elevated concentrations of benzopyrene and D. magna mortality were also observed. The study evidenced the high rate of contamination by PAHs and OCPs of the soils and the need of urgent remediation actions.

During the last decades, the Berre lagoon, located in southeastern France, has been deeply affected by strong contaminant inputs. Surveys of surface sediment contamination have been sparsely performed since 1964 with data often disconnected with regard to time and space. To contribute to filling this gap, this study examined the pollution status of the lagoon during a 2012 sampling. Concentrations of heavy metals (HMs) (cadmium [Cd], chromium [Cr], copper [Cu], lead [Pb], and zinc [Zn]), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were examined. The available seawater metal fraction was also investigated. Water from the Vaine basin (VB; stations 1 through 6) exhibited the lowest oxygen concentration (mean O2 % saturation 38.9 %). HM loads were in the order of Zn > Cr > Pb > Cu > Cd with overall concentration ranges of 0.20–1.40 mg kg−1 for Cd, 17.1–119 mg kg−1 for Cr, 7.0–60.7 g−1 for Cu, 12.0–104 mg kg−1 for Pb, and 56.5–215 mg kg−1 for Zn. Although HMs accumulated at levels largely exceeding their relative natural background level of 11-fold for Pb and 80-fold for Zn, their mean concentrations decreased largely to below the acceptable legal limits. HM loads were 20 to threefold the relative corresponding value of the threshold effect level benchmark of potential biological risk. Metals were only scantly released by sediments with mean percentage release of 0.99 % for Cd and 40.2 % for Cr with a peak for this latter element of 99 % in the VB sector. In the case of OCPs, sediments appeared to be significantly polluted, especially in the VB area, with a mean lindane concentration of 0.05 mg kg−1, which is ≤fivefold the legal threshold. Among PAHs, benzo[a]pyrene exceeded the permitted limit of 0.1 mg kg−1 mainly in the VB sector.

29 p., 1 figura, 5 tablas, The long-term variability of total Cu content from fungicides applied in a certified wine region of Spain (La Rioja) and of other metals (Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Zn) was evaluated in three young vineyard soils and subsoils unamended and amended with spent mushroom substrates (SMS) over a 3-year period (2006–2008). SMS is a promising agricultural residue as an amendment to increase the soil organic matter content but may modify the behaviour of metals from pesticide utilisation in vineyards. Fresh and composted SMS was applied each year at a rate of 25 t ha−1 (dry-weight). Copper concentrations in the three unamended soils were 21.2–88.5, 25.5–77.1, and 29.4–78.4 mg kg−1. They exceeded natural Cu concentrations of the region and reference sub-lethal hazardous concentration for soil organism. The concentrations of Cd, Ni, Pb, and Zn were largely below the sub-lethal limits. Thus, although Cu levels were lower than those of established vineyards, vine performance, and productivity might be affected. The variation in behaviour between different amendments for each soil was high, so a generic conclusion could not be drawn. The amendment practice seemed to have caused temporarily Cu mobilization respect to untreated soils. The aim of the study was to delineate the extent of heavy metal pollution in the marine sediments within the port of Naples. Total metal contents from twenty surface sediments were compared with those from a long sediment core representing the natural geochemical baseline. Enrichment factors were computed for each metal and for each site in order to assess the polluting metals and the degree of pollution at each site. Results revealed that heavy metal pollution is mainly localized in the port area devoted to shipbuilding activities and in the south-east sector, which is under the influence of petroleum refineries. Data from sequential extractions indicate that metals from anthropogenic sources are mainly Cd, Zn, Cr and Cu and are potentially more mobile than those inherited from geological parent material.
