The current research investigated the secondary school students’ environmental literacy levels and the effects of various variables on their environmental literacy levels. The study was carried out with the participation of 525 secondary school students (5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades) selected from 6 different secondary schools in the city of Bitlis in Turkey in 2013-2014 school year. In order to collect the data in the study, “Elementary School Environmental Literacy Scale” was administered and in the analysis of the gathered data, descriptive statistics, Mann Whitney U-Test and Kruskal Wallis H-Test were employed. At the end of the study, it was concluded that the students’ environmental literacy level is medium in general. While variables such as gender, wondering about news about the environment and nature and visit to natural areas in the last two years lead to significant differences among the students’ environmental literacy levels, grade level was found to be not leading to a significant difference among the students’ literacy levels.&nbsp

The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of an applied environmental education project carried out using the green-class model on students' environmental knowledge and its retention. 101 7th grade students attending Nazim Akcan Primary School in the Altindag Province of Ankara participated in the study. The study was carried out in the form of pre-test post-test monitoring design. The Environmental Knowledge Test was used as a data collection instrument. For the analysis of the data, a two-way ANOVA for mixed measures was used. The post-test and monitoring test means of both the experimental groups were found to be significantly higher than the control group. As a conclusion, the green-class model considerably enhanced the environmental knowledge of the students and its retention. It was able to make a great contribution to the environmental knowledge of the students residing in a low socio-economic neighbourhood. Bu çalışmada, ortaöğretim programında seçmeli olarak verilen “Çevre ve İnsan” dersi ile Gönüllü Çevre Kuruluşlarının öğrencilerin çevreye yönelik bilgi ve tutumlarına etkisi araştırılmıştır. Geliştirilen “Çevresel Tutum Ölçeği” ve “Çevre Bilgisi Testi” 2004-2005 eğitim-öğretim yılında, Ankara İli Çankaya İlçesindeki çeşitli ortaöğretim kurumlarında öğrenim gören 1013 öğrenciye uygulanmış ve elde edilen veriler çok değişkenli varyans analizi (MANOVA) ile değerlendirilmiştir. MANOVA sonuçlarına göre, “Çevre ve İnsan” dersini alan ve almayan öğrencilerin çevreye yönelik bilgi ve tutum ortalamaları arasında, dersi alan öğrencilerin lehine anlamlı bir farkın olduğu tespit edilirken; gönüllü çevre kuruluşlarında aktif olarak çalışma durumlarına göre yapılan değerlendirmede, öğrencilerin çevresel tutum ve çevre bilgisi ortalamaları arasında anlamlı bir fark bulunmamıştır., In this study, it is aimed to determine the effect of the course “Man and Environment” provided as an elective course in the secondary school curriculum, as well as the Voluntary Environment Organisations, to the students in terms of providing environment-oriented knowledge and attitude. The developed “Environmental Attitude Scale” and “Environment Knowledge Test” are applied in education period 2004-2005 to 1013 students, having education in Ankara, district Cankaya. Obtained data is evaluated by Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA). According to MANOVA results, there is a significant difference in favor of students that have attended the “Man and Environment” course, in terms of environmentoriented knowledge and attitude average of the students.
