Copper-based pesticides and wood preservatives could end up in the environment during production, use, and end-of-life via different pathways that could cause unintended ecological and adverse health effects. This paper provides the effect of colloid-size Cu-based pesticides (CuPRO and Kocide), micronized Cu azole (MCA-1 and MCA-2) and alkaline Cu quaternary (ACQ) treated woods, Cu(2+), Cu(2+) spiked untreated wood (UTW), and CuCO(3) solutions against Gram-positive Bacillus species using five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD(5)) standard test. The total Cu leached from MCA-1, MCA-2, and ACQ in Milli-Q water after 5 days were ˜0.1, ˜0.11, and ˜0.64 g/kg of wood, respectively. However, the form of Cu leached from MCA woods was mostly ionic (> 90%). The total organic carbon (TOC) content of any tested wood (UTW/MCA-1/MCA-2/ACQ) was ˜99% of its corresponding total carbon (TC) content, whereas the TOC of any tested wood sawdust exceeded that of its corresponding piece/block by > 300%. The dissolved oxygen (DO) consumption value in the presence of Cu(2+), CuCO(3), CuPRO, and Kocide solutions was significantly influenced by Cu particles/ions. However, the DO consumption value in the presence of UTW/MCA-1/MCA-2/ACQ woods was significantly influenced by organics leached from woods. On the other hand, the DO consumption of MCA sawdust was greater than (300%) that of MCA pieces/block. The findings of this study provide more insight into how organics leached from woods significantly reduce the toxic effects of Cu ions against Gram-positive Bacillus species.

This study innovated the concept in designing an efficient and reusable microwave (MW) absorbent through concurrent exploitation of carbon graphitization, oxygen functionalization, and carbothermal iron reduction underpinned by an endothermic co-pyrolysis of wood waste and low-dosage iron. A powerful MW assimilation was accomplished from nanoscale amorphous magnetic particles as well as graphitized microporous carbon-iron skeleton in the biochar composites. Relative to a weak magnetic loss derived from the iron phase, the graphitic carbon architecture with abundant surface functionalities (i.e., CO and CO) exhibited a strong dielectric loss, which was thus prioritized as major active sites during MW reuse. The MW-absorbing biochar demonstrated a fast, robust, and durable removal of a refractory herbicide (2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid) under mild MW irradiation with zero chemical input, low electricity consumption, and negligible Fe dissolution. Overall, this study will foster carbon-neutral industrial wastewater treatment and wood waste valorization.

There is an abundance of woody biomass in Japan. However, its economic feasibility is limited. There have been several discussions on whether generation of heat or electrical power is more suitable for woody biomass. In this study, we clarified the feasibility of generating heat and electricity from the viewpoint of biomass unit price and biomass productivity based on actual operation data for the first time. It was determined that heat production is feasible for a small-scale biomass energy use of 2,660 t/year or more. Electrical power generation is feasible only for a large-scale biomass energy use of 13,100 t/year or more, but it allows use of woody biomass with a higher unit price.

Integrative forest management approaches, aiming to combine the provision of multiple forest ecosystem services in the same forest area, are popular forest management concepts in Europe. Their understanding and application varies, however, across the continent. This paper looks at one dimension of integrative forest management approaches in particular – the integration of nature conservation measures into forest management; focusing on its understanding and application, as well as current and future social, technological, ecological, economic and political factors enabling or hampering this integration. Drawing on 42 qualitative in-depth interviews with national experts and forest practitioners, our study provides insights into the integration of nature conservation measures into forest management systems aimed at wood production and the provision of other forest ecosystem services under various conditions. Across the investigated countries, the main factors perceived to facilitate this integration are the personal motivations and knowledge of forest managers and their long-term economic thinking related to the resilience of the forest in the face of climate and societal change. In turn, the main factors perceived as hampering the integration are current wood-market demands, and a lack of (public) financial incentives. Public pressure is also perceived as an important influencing factor, which can both impede or support integration. Other ambiguous factors include societal knowledge and related knowledge gaps, relationships between local stakeholders, and the legal framework in which forest management operates. The study concludes with suggestions of how to enhance the uptake of the integration of nature conservation measures into forest management in Europe.

The abundance of synthetic polymers has become an ever-increasing environmental threat in the world. The excessive utilization of plastics leads to the accumulation of such recalcitrant pollutants in the environment. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, unprecedented demand for personal protective equipment (PPE) kits, face masks, and gloves made up of single-use items has resulted in the massive generation of plastic biomedical waste. As secondary pollutants, microplastic particles (5 mm) are derived from pellet loss and degradation of macroplastics. Therefore, urgent intervention is required for the management of these hazardous materials. Physicochemical approaches have been employed to degrade synthetic polymers, but these approaches have limited efficiency and cause the release of hazardous metabolites or by-products into the environment. Therefore, bioremediation is a proper option as it is both cost-efficient and environmentally friendly. On the other hand, plants evolved lignocellulose to be resistant to destruction, whereas insects, such as wood-feeding termites, possess diverse microorganisms in their guts, which confer physiological and ecological benefits to their host. Plastic and lignocellulose polymers share a number of physical and chemical properties, despite their structural and recalcitrance differences. Among these similarities are a hydrophobic nature, a carbon skeleton, and amorphous/crystalline regions. Compared with herbivorous mammals, lignocellulose digestion in termites is accomplished at ordinary temperatures. This unique characteristic has been of great interest for the development of a plastic biodegradation approach by termites and their gut symbionts. Therefore, transferring knowledge from research on lignocellulosic degradation by termites and their gut symbionts to that on synthetic polymers has become a new research hotspot and technological development direction to solve the environmental bottleneck caused by synthetic plastic polymers.

Emerging evidences have linked the air pollution particulate matters, especially the fine particulate matter PM2.5, to the disease development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Our previous studies reported that biofuel PM2.5 can induce devastated damage of human bronchial epithelial cells, this study aims to further investigate the underlying molecular mechanisms how biofuel PM2.5 induces bronchial epithelial cell death and dysfunction. In this study, biofuel PM2.5 extracted from wood smoke (WSPM2.5) was used according to our previous publication. A 16-HBE cell line was used as the cell model. Results showed that: Firstly, WSPM2.5 induced significant pyroptosis in 16-HBE cells, reflected by the typical changes including elevated release of lactate dehydrogenase release (LDH) and activated activity and expression of Caspase-1/IL-1β/IL-18 signaling pathway. Then, specific inhibitors for both Caspases (Z-VAD-FMK) and Caspase-1 (VX-765), as well as specific siRNA knockdown of IL-1β all effectively attenuated the WSPM2.5-induced upregulation of downstream inflammatory cytokines and chemokines (IL-6, IL-8, CXCL-1, CXCL-2, etc), respectively. Notably, WSPM2.5 caused a novel increase of intracellular-to-extracellular ATP secretion, which could also contribute to the WSPM2.5-induced pyroptosis and inflammation by activating the Caspase-1/IL-1β/IL-18 signaling pathway through possible autocrine and/or paracrine mechanisms. Antagonism of ATP (Apyrase) or specific siRNA knockdown against ATP receptors (P2Y2 and P2Y7) both significantly inhibited the WSPM2.5-induced pyroptosis and inflammation. These results add up to the current knowledge and bring up novel insights that WSPM2.5 could induce significant pyroptosis and inflammation of human bronchial epithelial cells, through both a classic NLRP3/Caspase-1/IL-1β-dependent and a novel ATP/P2Y-dependent mechanisms.

The use of wood, dung and other biomass fuels can be traced back to early prehistory. While the study of prehistoric fuel use and its environmental impacts is well established, there has been little investigation of the health impacts this would have had, particularly in the Neolithic period, when people went from living in relatively small groups, to living in dense settlements. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Çatalhöyük, Turkey, is one of the earliest large ‘pre-urban’ settlements in the world. In 2017, a series of experiments were conducted to measure fine particulate (PM2.5) concentrations during typical fuel burning activities, using wood and dung fuel. The results indicate that emissions from both fuels surpassed the WHO and EU standard limits for indoor air quality, with dung fuel being the highest contributor for PM2.5 pollution inside the house, producing maximum values > 150,000 µg m−3. Maximum levels from wood burning were 36,000 µg m−3. Average values over a 2–3 h period were 13–60,000 µg m−3 for dung and 10–45,000 µg m−3 for wood. The structure of the house, lack of ventilation and design of the oven and hearth influenced the air quality inside the house. These observations have implications for understanding the relationship between health and the built environment in the past.

Pulp and paper mill biomass boilers generate large quantities of ash in Canada with British Columbia (BC) being the highest ash generating province followed closely by Quebec. Generally, the generated ash is landfilled, particularly in BC, with only a small amount being used beneficially. It is anticipated that the difficulty associated with the management of ash will worsen over time as the industry increases its reliance on green fuel. Thus, there is a strong need to identify beneficial uses of pulp and paper boiler ash for the sake of environmental and economic sustainability. The purpose of this report is to provide the first step in this direction, a review of proposed or implemented uses for coal and hog (or wood) ash around the world. Considering both the properties of the ash and local opportunities, this could be the first step toward screening the applications that may apply to individual mills. Several large-scale practices use ash, such as land application (as a nutrient source or as a liming agent), use in the construction industry (as a replacement for cement or as a fill material), and reclamation of mine sites and stabilization of unpaved forest roads. In some cases, relatively small-scale applications have been used which included uses such as a compost component, agent for pH adjustment of liquid streams and slurries, blasting abrasive, and source of quartz for glass manufacturing to name a few. It is important to note that the chemical nature of both fly and bottom ashes can be quite variable due to the type of wood residues combusted as well as combustion equipment used and must be considered in identifying beneficial applications.

In order to identify the most environmental-friendly pretreatment for pyrolsis of wood residue to levoglucosan (LG), for the first time a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) was carried out for hot water treatment (HWT), torrefaction, acid pretreatment (AP) and salt pretreatment (SP) pathways. Since LG production can facilitate both resource recovery (RR) and wood residue handling (WRH), two different functional units (FUs), i.e., 1 kg LG production and 1 kg wood residue handling were considered. Understanding biodiversity resilience after a major disturbance is a key issue in basic and applied science. Plant diversity in gravel-bed rivers is affected by flood events, which are one of the most effective disturbance agents in the flow regime, affecting species distribution, and ecosystem dynamics. Although disturbance plays a critical role in community assembly mechanisms, how plant diversity recovers after a severe disturbance, such as a 100-year flood event remains unknown. The present study examined how the disturbance legacy of large wood in gravel-bed river ecosystems contributes to the resilience of plant diversity. The present study demonstrated that the resilience of plant species in disturbance legacy sites, namely deposited large wood sites, was higher than that in open habitat sites. Indicator species analysis revealed that perennial plants were the most important indicator species of disturbance legacy sites. These results suggest that perennial species richness contributes to the resilience of high plant diversity across the disturbance legacy sites in this region. After major flood events, land managers often remove large wood and debris jams to avoid secondary disasters, such as embankment collapse. However, we suggest that large wood should be retained on the gravel beds to aid the recovery of biodiversity and ecosystems. Furthermore, understanding the relationships between disturbance legacies and ecosystem resilience can contribute to the formulation of strategies for sustainable ecosystem management and biodiversity conservation in the future.

Biosorbent has attracted considerable attention recently for use in environment remediation and pollution control. Here, a simple and efficient method of one-step alkaline ball milling was designed to prepare porous hickory biosorbent without any thermal treatments. The products were characterized for their ability to remove methyl violet (MV) and titan yellow (TY) organic dyes from aqueous solutions. To combat climate change, reducing carbon emissions from coal consumption in the power sector can be an effective strategy. We developed a price-exogenous mixed integer linear optimization model satisfying both traditional timber demand in Georgia and its neighboring states (Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee) and additional bioenergy demand to replace coal in the power plants of Georgia for 50 years, maximizing social welfare. We used Forest InventoryAnalysis unit level yield of five forest types (planted softwood, natural softwood, upland hardwood, bottomland hardwood, and mixed forest), timber demand, and price information, and developed three scenarios. In the Baseline scenario, traditional annual timber demand (152 million tons of wood) was satisfied with no coal replacement. In Scenario 1, 100% coal (7.34 million tons annually) was replaced using pulpwood only, along with traditional demand. In Scenario 2, also with traditional demand, 100% coal was replaced using pulpwood and logging residues. It would require approximately 336 and 98 thousand acres of additional annual timberland harvested in Scenario 1 and Scenario 2, respectively, compared to Baseline (1280 thousand acres). During 50 years, a total of 9.3, 10.2, and 9.6 billion tons of timber was produced in Baseline, Scenario 1, and Scenario 2, respectively. About one-third of all torrefaction plants would be located in the central region of Georgia. The net change in stand carbon was positive in all three scenarios-the highest in Baseline (1330 million tons C), followed by Scenario 2 (1261 million tons C), and the lowest in Scenario 1 (872 million tons C). About 240 million tons of carbon was avoided by using biomass instead of coal in Scenario 1 and Scenario 2. In Baseline, with continued emission from coal usage in the power plant for 50 years (285 million tons C), net carbon benefit was 1046 million tons C. Replacing 100% of coal with both pulpwood and logging residues provided a net benefit of 1501 million tons C, about 43% higher compared to baseline.

Willow (Salix caprea), birch (Betula pendula) and aspen (Populus tremula) are common pioneer woody species, however little is known about colonization strategies in large-scale disturbances. Here we have compared the strategies of establishment of these pioneer woody species in unreclaimed sites on a large (1957 ha) spoil heap in Czechia. For all species, seedlings numbers peaked in the 17 year old (successional age - time since overburden heaping) plot, suggesting that initial soil development promotes seedling establishment while covering of the surface by litter and organic layers reduces the establishment of pioneer species. The proportion of willow decreased from the edge of the heap and analysis of the age structure suggests that willow establishment was correlated with the presence of older willows in the vicinity of willows of certain ages (13 and 23 years being particularly important). The proportion of birch increased with its distance from the heap edge, and it is correlated with suitable weather conditions in the year of establishment, mainly July rainfall. Aspen proportion does not change significantly with its distance from the heap edge and year of establishment. It correlates with the number of trees in both surrounding and climatic conditions. Detailed analysis of young trees shows that vegetative propagation by root suckers (offspring) is rare in birch. In willow they represent about half of the trees while in aspen all of the young trees were root suckers derived from older aspen trees. This indicates a different colonization strategy of individual species. Birch is capable of long-distance seed transfer, which establishes most of the population, and its establishment is highly influenced by climatic conditions. Willow spreads massively over a short distance, and its establishment is highly influenced by the presence of 21-23 year old willow individuals in the vicinity. Only few scattered trees are able to establish at longer distances, where they can later spread locally by seeds. Aspen spreads over a long distance in low numbers but when some trees are established it spreads massively locally by clones.

Delignification of steam-exploded birch wood (SEBW) was stimulated using a pretreatment method including Fenton reaction (FR) and fungi. SEBW was employed as a substrate to optimize the Fe(III) and Fe(II) dosage in FR. Maximum iron-binding to SEBW was obtained at pH 3.5. FR pretreatment increased biological methane yields from 257 mL/g vS in control to 383 and 352 mL/ g vS in samples with 0.5 mM Fe(II) and 1.0 mM Fe(III), respectively. Further enzymatic pretreatment using a commercial cellulase cocktail clearly improved methane production rate but only increased the final methane yields by 2–9 %. Finally, pretreatments with the fungi Pleurotus ostreatus (PO) and Lentinula edodes (LE), alone or in combination with FR, were carried out. SEBW pretreated with only LE and samples pretreated with PO and1 mM Fe(III) + H2O2 increased the methane production yield to 420 and 419 mL/g vS respectively. These pretreatments delignified SEBW up to 25 %.

In Sweden, the majority of forest area has been altered by industrial forestry over the decades. Almost 30 years ago, a shift towards biodiversity-oriented forest management practices occurred. Here we took advantage of long-term data collected by the Swedish National Forest Inventory to track developmental changes in forest structural components over this time. We assessed changes in structural components that play an important role in biodiversity (dead wood, large living trees, tree species composition, and understory vegetation) in four forest types with descending tiers of biodiversity protection: protected areas, woodland key habitats, low-productivity forests and production forests. Overall, we found a positive trend in the volumes of dead wood and large living trees, as well as in tree species diversity, while there was a general decline in understory vegetation coverage. Most observed changes were consistent with the intended outcomes of the current forest policy, adapted in the early 1990s. The implementation of retention forestry is likely driving some of the observed changes in forest structural components in the south. In contrast, we observed no changes in any of the focal structural components in the north, which could be attributed to the ongoing clear-cutting of forests previously managed less intensively. Dead wood and large living trees increased not only in managed, but also in unmanaged forests, likely reflecting historical management. The increased tree species diversity can be explained through current forest management practices that encourages maintenance of additional tree species. Decreasing understory vegetation coverage in both dense managed and unmanaged forests suggests that factors other than forestry contribute to the ongoing changes in understory vegetation in Swedish forests. Overall, the observed increase in structural components has not yet been reflected in documented improvements for red-listed forest species, which may be due to delays in species responses to small improvements, as well as a lack of detailed monitoring. Similarly, the increased availability of forest structural components might still be insufficient to meet the specific habitat requirements of red-listed species.

To assess the technical condition of a structure and design it using existing elements, it is necessary to know its parameters. For existing facilities, it is often not possible to get a sample of material and examine it directly in the laboratory. For this reason, in situ nondestructive testing is very important. The main goal of the paper is to present the issues related to determining the strength parameters of a particular wood based on the non-destructive sclerometric test performed with a wood sclerometric hammer. The study also presents the results of the impact of pinewood density on its compressive strength.

In this work, a novel delignification process was proposed for the fractionation of invasive species such as Acacia dealbata wood. Organosolv process catalyzed with an acidic ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrosulfate was evaluated to obtain cellulose-enriched solids and liquid fractions rich in hemicelluloses derived compounds and lignin. Under selected operating conditions (190 °C, 60% ethanol, 60 min of reaction time and 0.6 g 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrosulfate/g wood), high solubilization of lignin and hemicelluloses and cellulose recovery (87.5%, 88.7% and 88.3%, respectively), with a pulp yield of 43.1% were achieved. Moreover, 62.6 % of lignin was recovered by precipitation from the black liquor (composed mainly by 4.43 g xylose/L, 7.66 g furfural/L and 3.59 g acetic acid/L). In addition, enzymatic digestibility of delignified wood was also assayed. The objective of this research was to evaluate the efficacy of cinnamon wood biochar (CWBC) in adsorbing sulfamethoxazole (SUL), which alleviates bioavailability and plant uptake. Batch studies at various pH, contact times, and initial SUL loading were used to study SUL adsorption in CWBC, soil, and 2.5% CWBC amended soil. A critical review of the articles dealing with biochar in terms of the reuse of biomass waste in building materials and its impact on material properties was conducted using five different electronic databases; thirteen articles were selected for this critical review. Biochar was used as a replacement for cement and aggregate in cementitious composites and as an addition in wood polypropylene composites and plasters. The biochar dosages ranged from 0.5% to 40%; in most composites, the addition of biochar increased strength and reduced thermal conductivity and the bulk density of fresh mortars. Also, biochar dosages of 0.5-2% decreased, while dosages of 10-40% increased water absorption and penetration on cementitious composites. The selected studies mainly introduced biochar use in building materials as a means of biomass waste reduction and its reuse for various purposes, while carbon footprint reduction was addressed in only a few of them. Various construction materials and interior equipment contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Their higher quantities in indoor air are linked to poor health consequences and are controversial regarding health risks, given that people spend so much time indoors. As a result, VOCs in indoor air cause concern regarding sick building syndrome. From a historical perspective, wood and wood-based panels have been frequently employed. Nonetheless, wood appears to be a product and a material of the future in today's world. The emission of VOCs from wood and wood products is essential when assessing the impact of different materials on the indoor environment. The emission rate is affected by both the wood species and the boundary circumstances (drying, storage, etc.). The issue of VOCs emitted from wood, and wood-based panels are addressed in this review paper. The most prevalent VOCs were listed. The advantages and limits of using VOCs for analytical determination from these composites are discussed.

This work aimed to evaluate the composting of the mixture of residues from fish filleting, using sawdust as a structuring material as an alternative for stabilization, through physical-chemical analysis and phytotoxicity. The experiment was carried out in a composter 1.10 m long, 1.50 m wide, and 1.20 m high and presenting 2.50 m in total height, which received the mixture of fish filleting wastes and sawdust in a5:3 ratio, respectively. The results demonstrated that composting in cells is an efficient alternative for the decomposition of the mixture of fish filleting and sawdust residues. The rapid decomposition of fish waste and the low C/N ratio harms the development of thermophilic microorganisms during the composting of the mixture of fish filleting and sawdust residues. The compaction of the sawdust layers and the absence of stirring in the composting method in cells collaborate for the compost to need a time greater than 60 days to be recommended as simple organic fertilizer. The biomass stirring is necessary so that sawdust can be considered a good structuring agent. The phytotoxicity test should be taken into account by the Normative Instruction n° 25/2009 as an indicator of compost maturity.

Particulate matter emissions (PM10) from the combustion, in a residential stove, of two commercial brands of certified (ENplus A1) pellets, a non-certified brand and laboratory made pellets of acacia were tested for their ability to induce ecotoxic, cytotoxic, and mutagenic responses in unicellular organisms and a human cell line. Ecotoxicity was evaluated through the Vibrio fischeri bioluminescence inhibition assay. Moreover, cytotoxicity was assessed at two time points (24- and 48-hr) through two complementary techniques in order to evaluate the cellular metabolic activity and membrane integrity of human lung epithelial cells A549. The Ames test using two Salmonella typhimurium strains (TA100 and TA98) was employed to assess the mutagenic potential of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon fraction extracted from the PM10 samples. Results obtained with the bioluminescent bacteria indicated that only particles from the combustion of acacia pellets were toxic. All samples induced impairment on the A549 cells metabolic activity, while no significant release of lactate dehydrogenase was recorded. PM10 emissions from acacia pellets were the most cytotoxic, while samples from both certified pellets evoked significant cytotoxicity at lower doses. Cytotoxicity time-dependency was only observed for PM10 from the combustion of acacia pellets and one of the brands of certified pellets. Mutagenic activity was not detected in both S. typhimurium strains. This study emphasises the role of the raw material for pellet manufacturing on the toxicological profile of PM emissions. Alternative raw materials should be deeply investigated before their use in pelletisation and combustion in residential appliances.

A synergistic pretreatment that realizing effective fractionation and targeted valorization can guarantee the implementability to future biorefinery scenario. In the present study, a stepwise approach using hydrothermal and deep eutectic solvents (DES) pretreatment was developed to preferentially dissociate hemicelluloses and further remove lignin from poplar, while retaining a cellulose-rich substrate that can be easily digested via enzymatic saccharification to obtain glucose. Results showed that the hydrothermal filtrate is mainly composed of xylooligosaccharide (XOS), monosaccharides, byproducts, and xylan-type hemicelluloses, which have homogenous structures and uniform molecular weights distribution as well as excellent antioxidant activity. Subsequent DES pretreatment further removed the lignin barriers, leading to a remarkable increase in the saccharification efficiency from 15.72% to 96.33% under optimum conditions for enzymatic hydrolysis. In short, the integrated pretreatment is effective for dissociating and chemical conversion of poplar wood, which was reasonable to promote the frontier of highly available biorefinery.

The United Nations estimates the rate of deforestation over 10 million hectares per year, with additional infested wood available due to drought, bark beetle calamity and other damage vectors. Processing the hard-to-reach infested wood into biochar via mobile pyrolysis units seems to be a good option for fire prevention. However, since most biochar is currently produced mainly from biological waste, there is not enough experience with wood biochar on a large scale. Review of current knowledge, followed by techno-economic assessment reveals that following the chemical composition of the feedstock, wood biochar outperforms other types of biochar in terms of high porosity. Therefore, wood biochar shows excellent results in increasing the amount of plant-available water content in soil and appears to be an excellent tool for recycling nutrients (especially into plant-available forms of phosphorus and nitrogen). The overall positive effects of biochar application change from abiotic to biotic over time because as it decays, many of its physical properties disappear, but it can boost soil microbial communities on which soil fertility depends. As global climate change creates a wide range of factors that damage forest cover, wood biochar consequently represents untapped potential in the field of soil, nutrient, and energy management.

Using co-substrate to accumulate polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) is an efficient approach to reduce production cost and improve yield of PHA. In the study, PHA was biosynthesized under full aerobic mode by using rubber wood hydrolysate and xylose co-substrate as the carbon source. The effects of co-substrate on PHA production, microbial community and carbon conversion were explored. Wood waste-derived biochar with tunable carbon structure and surface functionality has a great potential for various environmental applications and circular economy; however, a holistic understanding on the application-oriented production of high-efficacy biochar is lacking. Thus, the co-impacts of different pyrolysis conditions (temperature and duration) and activation methods (steam, CO2, and acid pretreatment) on the biochar properties were first investigated. A temperature of 650 ℃ was effective in forming carbonized structure in biochar, while 750 ℃ was critical for the porous structure development. A longer pyrolysis duration (>60 min) enhanced the pore volume without compromising the yield. The activated biochar exhibited a larger pore volume (2.1- to 2.9-fold of pristine biochar) for potential high-end emerging applications. The acid pretreatment effectively removed dissolved organic carbon and most metals from the biochar. This study provides an essential guidance on the fit-for-purpose designs of biochar production conditions for sustainable wood waste management.

Direct land application of food waste digestate (FWD) leads to 60–70% of nitrogen loss through NH3 volatilization due to its innate characteristics like high ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) (~6000 mg/kg dry matter) and high moisture content (~75%). Hence, bio stabilization of FWD through composting is a promising solution to curb the environmental and occupational hazards. Hence the aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of using sawdust and/or mature compost as a bulking agent to achieve effective composting. The results showed that mixing of FWD with sawdust alone or together with mature compost could produce quality compost with reduced NH4+-N ( 80%) within 2 weeks of co-composting. Composting FWD with both sawdust and mature compost effectively reduced ~ 83% of NH3 volatilization demonstrating that this approach can effectively produce mature nitrogen enriched FWD compost.

Rangelands worldwide have experienced significant shifts from grass-dominated to woody-plant dominated states over the past century. In North America, these shifts are largely driven by overgrazing and landscape-scale fire suppression. Such shifts reduce productivity for livestock, can have broad-scale impacts to biodiversity, and are often difficult to reverse. Restoring grass dominance often involves restoring fire as an ecological process. However, many resprouting woody plants persist following disturbance, including fire, by resprouting from protected buds, rendering fire ineffective for reducing resprouting woody plant density. Recent research has shown that extreme fire (high-energy fires during periods of water stress) may reduce resprouting capacity. This previous research did not examine whether high-energy fires alone would be sufficient to cause mortality. We created an experimental framework for assessing the “buds-protection-resources” hypothesis of resprouting persistence under different fire energies. In July–August 2018 we exposed 48 individuals of a dominant resprouting woody plant in the region, honey mesquite (Prosopis glandulosa), to two levels of fire energy (high and low) and root crown exposure (exposed vs unexposed) and evaluated resprouting capacity. We censused basal and epicormic resprouts for two years following treatment. Water stress was moderate for several months leading up to fires but low in subsequent years. Epicormic and basal buds were somewhat protected from low- and high-energy fire. However, epicormic buds were protected in very few mesquites subjected to high-energy fires. High-energy fires decreased survival, caused loss of apical dominance, and left residual dead stems, which may increase chances of mortality from future fires. Basal resprout numbers were reduced by high-energy fires, which may have additional implications for long-term mesquite survival. While the buds, protection, and resources components of resprouter persistence all played a role in resprouting, high-energy fire decreased mesquite survival and reduced resprouting. This suggests that high-energy fires affect persistence mechanisms to different extents than low-energy fires. In addition, high-energy fires during normal rainfall can have negative impacts on resprouting capacity; water stress is not a necessary precursor to honey mesquite mortality from high-energy fire.

The feasibility of producing polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) from pretreated waste wood hydrolysate and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from sewage fermented products as co-substrate feedstock through mixed microbial cultures (MMCs) process was explored. The results showed that the addition of co-substrate shortened the cycle of PHA reaching the maximum and increased the proportion of 3-hydroxyvalerate (3HV) monomer. Compared with N-excess supply, almost 1.6 times increased PHA accumulation was realized under N-limitation, and simultaneously the highest proportion of 3HV monomer with 51% was also obtained. Additionally, PHA production in S1400 reactor reached a maximum value of about 3088 mg COD/L with culture time to 36 h. The microbial community also displayed a high diversity, which was composed of 65 bacterial genera. It is a novel attempt to accumulate PHA from pretreated waste wood hydrolysate and VFAs co-substrate through MMCs, providing an effective green approach to reduce its expensive cost and achieve mass production.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of biological and chemical remediation of chromated copper arsenate (CCA) treated Corymbia citriodora poles, removed from service after 30 years. The presence of arsenic (As), chromium (Cr) and copper (Cu) was quantified by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP–OES). Twelve species of decay fungi were used for the biological remediation assay. For chemical remediation oxalic, citric, maleic and ethylenediamine tetraacetic (EDTA) acids were used for 24 and 48 h. In biological remediation, copper-tolerant brown-rot fungi, Wolfiporia cocos, Antrodia xantha and Fibroporia radiculosa, performed the best results, with the highest removals for As (59–85 %) and Cr (38–61 %). Cu was the most easily extracted, with removals above 60 % among the tested fungi, with the best results (90–98 %) for F. radiculosa, Coniophora puteana, Antrodia vaillantii and Postia placenta. In chemical remediation, the extraction time of 48 h was the most effective, and oxalic acid generally reached the highest removals. The EDTA + oxalic acid combination reached the highest value for Cu extraction (98 %).

Ecosystem degradation as a result of coal mining is a common phenomenon in various regions of the world, especially in arid and semi-arid zones. The implementation of appropriate revegetation techniques can be considered crucial to restore these degraded areas. In this regard, the additions of spent mushroom compost (SMC) and wood biochar (WB) to infertile and degraded soils have been reported to enhance soil fertility and plant growth under water (W) deficit conditions. However, the combined application of W, SMC and WB to coal mine degraded soils, to promote Althaea rosea growth and facilitate subsequent restoration, has not been explored yet. Hence, in the current study a pot experiment was carried out by growing A. rosea on coal mine spoils to assess the influence of different doses of W, SMC and WB on its morpho-physiological and biochemical growth responses. The results indicated that several plant growth traits like plant height, root length and dry biomass significantly improved with moderate W-SMC-WB doses. In addition, the simultaneous application of W-SMC-WB caused a significant decrease in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) (by 7-56%), superoxide anion (O2●‒) (by 14-51%), malondialdehyde (MDA) (by 23-46%) and proline (Pro) contents (by 23-66%), as well as an increase in relative water content (by 10-27%), membrane stability index (by 2-24%), net photosynthesis rate (by 40-99%), total chlorophylls (by 43-113%) and carotenoids (by 31-115%), as compared to the control treatment. The addition of SMC and WB under low-W regime enhanced leaf water use efficiency, and soluble sugar content, also boosting the activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase and ascorbate peroxidase in leaf tissues, thus reducing the oxidative stress, as proved by low levels of H2O2, O2●‒, MDA and Pro contents. Finest growth performance under optimum doses of W (60% field capacity), SMC (1.4%) and WB (0.8%) suggest that revegetation of A. rosea with the recommended W-SMC-WB doses would be a suitable and eco-friendly approach for ecological restoration in arid degraded areas.

International audience; This study investigated the performance and microbiome of cyclic denitrification filters (CDFs) for wood and sulfur heterotrophic-autotrophic denitrification (WSHAD) of saline wastewater. Wood-sulfur CDFs integrated into two pilot-scale marine recirculating aquaculture systems achieved high denitrification rates (103 ± 8.5 g N/(m3·d)). The combined use of pine wood and sulfur resulted in lower SO42− accumulation compared with prior saline wastewater denitrification studies with sulfur alone. Although fish tank water quality parameters, including ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and sulfide, were below the inhibitory levels for marine fish production, lower survival rates of Poecilia sphenops were observed compared with prior studies. Heterotrophic denitrification was the dominant removal mechanism during the early operational stages, while sulfur autotrophic denitrification increased as readily biodegradable organic carbon released from wood chips decreased over time. 16S rRNA-based analysis of the CDF microbiome revealed that Sulfurimonas, Thioalbus, Defluviimonas, and Ornatilinea as notable genera that contributed to denitrification performance.

Wood-based biochar, as a metal-free heterogeneous activator of peroxydisulfate (PDS), was successfully prepared by pyrolysis of polar sawdust for efficient removal of Acid Orange 7 (AO7). The results demonstrate PDS could be effectively activated by wood-based biochar, and AO7 was rapidly eliminated in a wide range of pH value (3.0–10.0) with AO7 removal achieved ≥ 99.3% after 14 min reaction. The dominant reactive species in the biochar/PDS system were verified via radical quenching tests and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technique. It is speculated that sulfate radicals (SO4•−) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were formed on the surface of biochar. Based on the results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), π-electron density and oxygen-containing functional groups (especially C–OH) on biochar surface were active centers for the catalytic reaction. Recycle experiments of biochar for 4 runs were carried out and the regeneration method of the catalyst was also studied.

Biochar is a promising material for facilitating the reclamation of oil sands process water (OSPW); however, how biochar properties can be optimized for metal removal from OSPW is not well studied. This study was conducted to determine relationships among feedstock type, pyrolysis condition, biochar property, and lead(II) adsorption capacity to demonstrate the potential use of biochar for metal removal from a synthetic OSPW. Sawdust, canola and wheat straw, and manure pellet were pyrolyzed at 300, 500, and 700 °C, with or without steam activation. Increasing pyrolysis temperature increased, with a few exceptions, biochar pH, surface area, and carbon content, but decreased hydrogen and oxygen contents and surface functional groups. Steam activation increased surface area but did not affect other properties. For non-steam-activated biochars, canola and wheat straw biochars produced at 700 °C had the highest lead(II) adsorption capacity (Qmax_Pb), at 108 and 109 mg g−1, respectively. Increasing the pyrolysis temperature increased Qmax_Pb due to increased biochar pH, ash content, and surface area by increasing precipitation, ion exchange, and inner-sphere complexation of lead(II). Steam activation increased lead(II) adsorption capacity for most biochars mainly due to the increased surface area, with the highest Qmax_Pb at 195 mg g−1 for canola straw biochar pyrolyzed at 700 °C with steam activation. The adsorption with time followed a pseudo-second order kinetic model. The results of this study will help select most effective biochars that can be produced from locally available agricultural or forestry byproducts that are optimized for metal removal from synthetic OSPW.

This study attempts to employ wood sawdust and rice husk as biorenewable conditioners to improve the efficiency and energy consumption of sewage sludge thermal drying, besides revealing the mechanism of drying. Response surface methodology (RSM) approach has been used to optimize the operational parameters (drying temperature and dose of conditioners). Investigations into the thermal performance, water distribution and morphological of sludge have been used to explain the improvements obtained in the properties of drying with the addition of biomass. The optimal conditions found out were: 10% rice husk and 10% wood sawdust at 120 °C, which resulted in drying time to reduce by 17.64% with the energy consumption savings by 46.37% for the conditioned sludge. Also, the mechanism on the roles of these additives has been found out as follows: (1) Addition of biomass enhances the thermal conductivity of the conditioned sludge, leading to improvements in its heat transfer capacity; (2) Bound water → free water and strongly bonding water → weakly bonding water, due to cationic osmotic effects; (3) Structures with rigidity and porosity provide sufficient passages for the vapors to escape.

Recently, the worldwide production of dissolving pulp has grown rapidly. Enzymatic technologies play an important role in producing high-quality dissolving pulp, due to their green, mild conditions, high specificity and efficiency. In this review, the relevant publications regarding enzyme applications for dissolving pulp are summarized. Cellulase and xylanase are two major enzymes used for this purpose. Cellulase can improve the quality of dissolving pulp, such as improving the reactivity/accessibility, controlling the intrinsic viscosity and adjusting the molecular weight. Xylanase is mainly used to increase the purity of the dissolving pulp and improve the pulp brightness. Furthermore, in order to increase the enzymatic treatment efficiency, the enzymatic technology can be combined with other techniques, including mechanical refining, fiber fractionations, alkali treatment and use of additives. The advantages, disadvantages and practical implications are analyzed. Also, the potential of other enzymes (such as laccase, mannanase) are discussed.

Chemi-mechanical pulping, a typical high-yield pulping method, combined with autohydrolysis pretreatment prior to pulping is an efficient and value-added utilization method for biomass in pulp and paper industry. This study investigated the surface lignin changes of poplar sapwood chips in autohydrolysis pretreatment and their effect on the subsequent alkali impregnation for chemi-mechanical pulping. The results showed that the surface lignin content went up with the increase of autohydrolysis intensity, and that the existence of the surface lignin had nearly no impact on the subsequent alkali impregnation in making chemi-mechanical pulps (CMPs) compared to the volume porosity, which was validated by using the stepwise regression analysis. It can be further concluded that autohydrolysis can facilitate the subsequent alkali impregnation of the autohydrolyzed sapwood chips in making CMP, which would be of significance for the combination of biomass refinery and pulp and paper industry.

Torrefaction is a promising pretreatment technology for biomass thermochemical conversion. In this study, pinewood (PW) and PW250 (torrefied at 250 °C) were prepared for pyrolysis. Torrefaction was carried out in a fixed bed reactor and the pyrolysis was studied by thermogravimetric analyzer using six different heating rates. The results showed that the content of hemicellulose in biomass decreased while cellulose and lignin increased after torrefaction. Moreover, the C-O peaks of torrefied biomass was strengthened in FTIR spectrum and the crystallinity degree was enhanced according to XRD analysis. The performance of devolatilization and heat transfer were improved for PW250 while the volatiles only decreased by only 4%. Activation energy was calculated by three iso-conversion methods. It was found that the PW followed D3 diffusion model, while the PW250 followed D1 diffusion model and tended to higher order reaction model at high conversions. In addition, the thermodynamic parameters were compared.

In this study, the influences of feedstock and pyrolysis temperature on carbon fractions of biochar were investigated. Four types of organic wastes (rice straw (RS), pine wood (PW), pig manure (PM) and sewage sludge (SS)) were pyrolyzed at different temperatures (300 °C, 400 °C, 500 °C, 600 °C and 700 °C). Biochar produced at low temperature exhibited high yields, high dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content and unstable organic carbon content. In contrast, biochar formed at high temperature showed high C content and C stability with a low O/C and H/C ratios. In addition, the biochar pyrolyzed from PW contained the lowest DOC of the four biochar types. The properties of DOC fractions (F1, F2 and F3) released from biochar differed depending on feedstock, pyrolysis temperatures, and extraction procedures. The highest specific ultraviolet absorbance at 254 nm of the F1 and F2 fractions were observed for RS biochar, suggesting that more aromatic organic matter was present in sequentially extracted fractions of RS biochar than in extracts from the other biochars. In addition, the hot water extracts (F2) mostly showed higher aromaticity than cold water extracts (F1). The stability of biochars was greatly enhanced at pyrolysis temperatures >500 °C. If the biochars produced in this study were to be used for carbon sequestration in soil, the first priority should be PW, followed in order by RS and PM.

Partial or complete substitution of coal with renewable biomass like wood is a sustainable and effective solution to reduce the CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. Utilization of these woods in the form of compact pellets facilitates in its handling and transportation with higher energy density. However, for electric power generation the pellets are broken up into their constituent milled finer particles for burning as a pulverised biomass flame. There is a dust fire/explosibility hazards in the process handling facilities such as in storage, conveying and milling. In the present work, four commercial pellets were investigated, and each pellet sample was split into three size ranges

The aim of this study was to pyrolyze individual (oil palm shell, empty fruit bunch and sawdust) as well as blend biomass in a thermogravimetric mass spectrometry (TG-MS) from room temperature to 800 °C at constant heating rate of 15 °C/min. The results showed that the onset TG temperature for blend biomass shifted slightly to lower values. Activation energy values were also found to decrease slightly after blending the biomass. Interestingly, the MS spectra of selected gases (H2O CH4, H2O, C2H2, C2H4 or CO, CH2O, CH3OH, HCl, C3H6, CO2, HCOOH, and C6H12) evolved from blend biomass showed decreased in the intensity as compared to their individual biomass. Overall, the blend biomass showed synergy which provides ways to expand the possibility of utilizing multiple feedstocks in one thermo-chemical system.

In the present work, palm wood was pretreated using hydrothermal technique in conjunction with chemical method for removal of lignin. Pretreated palm wood was subjected to hydrolysis using Trichoderma reesei MTCC 4876. Subsequently bioethanol was produced using palm wood hydrolysate by Kluveromyces marxianus MTCC 1389. RSM was used to identify the non-linear relationship and optimize various process parameters such as parameters such as pH, temperature, agitation rate, substrate concentration and inoculum size for bioethanol production. ANN constructed with 5-2-1 topology was also used to optimize process parameters. The experimental bioethanol yield of 22.90 g/l was obtained at ANN optimum conditions of temperature 45 degrees C, agitation rate 156 rpm, pH 5, substrate concentration 8% (v/v) and inoculum size 3.2% (v/v).

Black carbon such as biochar has been shown to support microbial redox transformation by accepting and/or donating electrons. Electron storage capacity (ESC) is an important property that determines the capacity of a biochar to mediate redox processes in natural and engineered systems. However, it remained unclear whether a biochar's ESC is constant and reversible and if so to what extent, over what redox potential range ESC is distributed, and what fraction of the ESC is microbially accessible. In this study, we developed chemical methods that employed combinations of reductants and oxidants of different potentials – Ti(III) citrate, ferricyanide, dithionite, and dissolved O2 – to measure the ESC of Soil Reef biochar, a wood-derived biochar that can serve as an electron donor or acceptor for Geobacter metallireducens. For a given oxidant–reductant pair, the ESC obtained over multiple redox cycles was constant and fully reversible, though lower than that of the virgin biochar. Pore diffusion within biochar particles was rate-limiting and controlled the timescale for redox equilibrium. Results suggest that redox-facile functional groups in biochar were distributed over a broad range of potentials. The ESC measured using dithionite indicates approximately 22% of the biochar's reversible ESC was accessible to G. metallireducens. We propose that reversible ESC may be regarded as a constant and quantifiable property of black carbon.

Enzymatic hydrolysis is a method to generate biofuel from biomass, and autohydrolysis is a popular method to pretreat biomass prior to enzymatic hydrolysis. The primary aim of the present study was to determine the role of lignin produced in the autohydrolysis process on the enzymatic hydrolysis of biomass. The HSQC and

Flower waste (FW) is disposed off in the rivers or mixed with solid waste for landfilling that pollutes the environment and causes harmful effects on human health and aquatic life. It is rich in nutrient content and easily converted into the compost. Therefore, the objective of the present research was to optimize the combinations of flower waste and cow dung during agitated pile composting using response surface methodology. Thirteen different agitated piles were used for composting using the central composite design. The optimum combination from central composite design was 65 kg floral waste, 25 kg cattle dung and 10 kg sawdust having 7.10 pH, 3.31 mS cm−1 electrical conductivity, 32.98% total organic carbon and 14 Carbon to Nitrogen ratio during the end phase of the composting period. The nutrient concentrations into the final compost were within the acceptable limit and also found to be beneficial for the growth of plants.

Effects of the addition of 2-naphthol and 2-naphthol-7-sulfonate on the dilute acid pretreatment of mixed wood sawdust were investigated, respectively. Compared to 2-naphthol, 2-naphtnol-7-sulfonate was more effective to enhance delignification and facilitate the enzymatic hydrolysis. The 72 h hydrolysis yield was improved by 47.8% for 2-naphthol-7-sulfone, while only 9.1% was observed for 2-naphthol. The surface charges, enzyme adsorption, and cellulose accessibility of dilute acid pretreated substrates with or without naphthol derivatives were examined. The improved enzymatic hydrolysis by adding 2-naphthol-7-sulfonate was ascribed to the higher negative surface charges, the lower enzyme non-productive binding, and the higher cellulose accessibility of pretreated substrates. Additionally, the HSQC NMR and 31P NMR analysis were carried out on both decomposed lignins and residual bulk lignins. It indicated that the addition of the naphthol derivatives during pretreatment could suppress the lignin repolymerization, which further mitigated the inhibition of residual lignins on enzymatic hydrolysis.

The scarcity of available drinking water has led the researchers to develop novel and cost-effective ways of bioremediation process for wastewater treatment. Bioremediation is a cost-effective and environmentally sound method for the removal of toxic compounds. Such approach is not only a chemical-less effort but also an energy savior. In the present work Phlebia acerina, a white rot wood rotting fungi have been used to degrade the toxic wastewater pollutants. Congo Red (CR) and Eriochrome Black T (EBT) have been selected as model pollutants to test the wastewater cleaning ability of the fungus. The Lignin modifying enzyme (LME) and Cellulolytic enzyme assays (CMC) potential of Phlebia acerina helped in understanding the dye degradation mechanism. Under the optimum conditions, the fungi was able to degrade as high as 92.4% CR while the EBT was degraded to a maximum of 50%. Phlebia acerina was found to show first-order kinetics of dyes degradation. Further, the seed germination and antimicrobial assay of treated and untreated water were carried out in order to establish the formation of non-toxic end product after degradation.

This research aims to investigate the effects of irradiation energy and residence time of soft X-ray irradiation in the decomposition of sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in smoke particles emitted from the Para rubber wood burning. The burning process was carried out in a tube furnace and the soft X-ray radiation used had a wave length of 0.13-0.41 nm. The irradiated (IR) and non irradiated (N-IR) smoke particles were collected simultaneously using a 10-stage Andersen sampler equipped with an inertial-filter stage (ANIF), in order to determine the physicochemical characteristic of both IR and N-IR smoke particles, including particle size distribution and concentration, and particle-bound PAHs concentration. Results show that the nano-size smoke particles contained the highest amount of PAHs and of carcinogenic potency equivalent (BaP-TEQ). About 75% of PAH compounds on the total smoke particles were decomposed at the highest irradiation energy. Moreover, 4-6 ring PAHs in nanoparticles (

The catalytic activity of engineered biochar was scrutinized for generation of glucose and hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from starch-rich food waste (bread, rice, and spaghetti). The biochar catalysts were synthesized by chemical activation of pinewood sawdust with phosphoric acid at 400–600 °C. Higher activation temperatures enhanced the development of porosity and acidity (characterized by C O PO3 and C PO3 surface groups), which imparted higher catalytic activity of H3PO4-activated biochar towards starch hydrolysis and fructose dehydration. Positive correlations were observed between HMF selectivity and ratio of mesopore to micropore volume, and between fructose conversion and total acid density. High yields of glucose (86.5 Cmol% at 150 °C, 20 min) and HMF (30.2 Cmol% at 180 °C, 20 min) were produced from rice starch and bread waste, respectively, over H3PO4-activated biochar. These results highlighted the potential of biochar catalyst in biorefinery as an emerging application of engineered biochar.
