In this study we propose, a multi-step strategy of selection and characterization of long-term dataset of contaminant concentrations in different environmental matrices (i.e., water and sediment). Starting from a high quality and homogeneous dataset of chemical parameters, a selection of a usable refined dataset followed by statistical characterization and hazard assessment was performed. The database of chemical contamination data from monitoring activities in the coastal marine water area of the Campania Region (Italy) produced by the Regional Agency for Environmental Protection of Campania (ARPAC) between 2013 and 2019 was utilized. Descriptive and multivariate statistics were applied to the extracted data subset to describe spatial variability and to investigate the relationships between matrices and contaminants. In addition, the impact on the sediment matrix was considered using the contamination factor (Cf), the sediment quality guidelines (SQG), and the probability of exceedance (PoE) of given thresholds for metals and organic compounds. The results highlighted the main anthropogenic pressures between the Gulf of Pozzuoli and the Gulf of Napoli, and the potential hazard posed in particular by metals (i.e., Pb, C, and Hg), TBT, and PAHs. A wide range of As concentration along the Campania coastline and Ni occurrence in the southern part of the region, mainly attributable to geogenic origin, was also evidenced. This approach allows extracting new knowledge from large dataset systematically collected by ARPAC monitoring activity, to support possible actions of contamination control and mitigation.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the current status of contamination due to the heavy metal and organic substances (PAHs, HC >12, organotin compounds, PCB, DDD, DDE, DDT) pollution of the sediments from the coastal area of the Bagnoli brownfield (Naples, Italy) and draw some hypotheses on the origin and trends of industrial and also geogenic contamination. Surface sediments and cores were collected and analysed. The results showed remarkable concentrations of heavy metals, PAHs, and other substances that are significantly higher than the national guideline values of sea sediment quality. Correlation analyses and spatial distribution analyses showed that generally the inorganic and organic pollutants have similar patterns, confirming the common origin from the industrial activity, but also that some of the studied metals have some natural contribution originated from the geologic setting of the area. The distribution of most of the heavy metals (especially Cd, Hg, Pb, Cu, Zn, partially Cr and Ni) and PAHs are similar, and the highest concentrations were recognised between and just off the piers, but a diffuse contamination is widespread up to the external areas of the site perimeter, rising concern on the diffusion of contaminants to the whole Gulf of Pozzuoli.

An activated carbon impregnated with elementary iodine (I2), named IodAC, characterized by oxidation capability, was developed and applied to oxidize arsenite, As(III), to arsenate, As(V), in arsenic-rich waters. Batch and column experiments were conducted to test the oxidation ability of the material. Comparisons with the oxidizing agents usually used in arsenic treatment systems were also conducted. In addition, the material has been tested coupled with an iron-based arsenic sorbent, in order to verify its suitability for the dearsenication of drinking waters. IodAC exhibited a high and lasting oxidation potential, since the column tests executed on water spiked with 50 mg/L of arsenic (100% arsenite) showed that 1 cc of IodAC (30 wt% I2) can oxidize about 25 mg of As(III) (0.33 mmol) before showing a dwindling in the oxidation ability. Moreover, an improvement of the arsenic sorption capability of the tested sorbent was also proved. The results confirmed that IodAC is suitable for implementation in water dearsenication plants, in place of the commonly used oxidizing agents, such as sodium hypochlorite or potassium permanganate, and in association with arsenic sorbents. In addition, the well-known antibacterial ability of iodine makes IodAC particularly suitable in areas (such developing countries) where the sanitation of water is a critical topic.

Results. Middle (Cu, Cr) and low (Cd, Pb, Zn) concentrations of heavy metals in sediment samples from the deeper central part of the lagoon were observed. Cadmium resulted in mainly being associated with carbonate forms (~60%), whereas Cr and Ni occurred primarily as residual mineral phases (>50%). Zn appeared uniformly distributed among the main geochemical forms. Considerable presence of Cr, Cu and Pb was found in the oxidizable fraction (~50%), indicating organic matter and/or sulphides major sinks for these metals. Differences of heavy metal distribution among sediment samples were observed, depending on the total metal content and on sediment properties. Modifications in metal speciation induced by sediment air drying mainly consist of a transfer of the actual and potentially mobile fractions towards immobile fractions (mineral residue) by oxidation and formation of Fe and Mn oxides. Discussion. Both total content and sequential extraction results did not show an environmental critical situation: the only possible risk, associated with heavy element mobility, could occur in consequence of a drastic pH and redox equilibria variation at the water-sediment interface. Conclusions. Despite all limitations, the BCR-SEP combined with information on the chemical and mineralogical properties of the sediment solid matrix provides a valuable approach to describe the risks related to the potentially toxic HM occurring in sediments (in this paper the case of the Fusaro lagoon is examined). HM distribution among the sequentially extracted geochemical forms is affected by sediment properties, such as pH (Zn), clay (Cd), Fe easily reducible oxides (Pb) and organic matter (Cu) content. Recommendations. Political managers, usually facing limitations of time and resources, have to optimize the cognitive phases, selecting the most useful information to make 'effective and correct decisions' in the environmental field. Therefore, although conscious of the limits of the adopted quality assessment, we believe it represents a good compromise between time and resource availability (i.e. type and quality of information). Outlook. The complementary use of the simple and rapid European fractionation scheme with information on the chemical and mineralogical properties of the sediments provides more awareness about the nature of the sediment components involved and offers a more reliable way for studying HM speciation in sediments.
