The aim of this study is to identify the reduplications and onomatopoeic formations in the short story titled “Değirmen” (The Mill) by Sabahattin Ali as well as find out the translation techniques in translations of these linguistic items from a semantic perspective. Since Turkish and English are different from each other in their morphological and cultural aspects, the former aspect affecting the construction of reduplications and the latter one shaping the formation of onomatopoeia, a literary translator faced with such linguistic items would encounter problems in translation. Even if the structural aspects are disrelated between these two languages, a thorough command of translation techniques accompanied by the potential results of the choice of these techniques could help literary translators greatly. As a result of the evaluation of the English translations of the twenty-one source reduplications and nine source onomatopoeic formations in two target texts, it is found that 88.33% of those linguistic items are translated within their field of meaning or preserved meaning-wise. In the light of these findings, it is concluded that the tension arising from the morphological and cultural discrepancy between the source and target languages is not insurmountable for literary translators as long as the their decisions are based on the semantic results of their choices in the act of translation. The present article offers a description and analysis of the various techniques used in the translation of Pixar animated feature film titles from English into Bulgarian and Russian. The fact that titles play an integral role in the initial presentation of a product and in the establishing of expectations in the target audience is well established. In this sense, the analysis of the existing practices in the translation and re-contextualization of a particular title into different languages and the potential motivation behind such choices is expected to be of interest for a broad audience - ranging from the common (or even keen) fans of animated movies, through marketing and advertising specialists, all the way to researchers in the fields of translation theory and practice, media- and culture studies. In terms of the historically established concurrent traditions in the field of translation in Western Europe and USA on the one hand and Russia on the other, Sirakova and Michev (2015) offer a summary of the different approaches and classifications. The theoretical aspects of terminological variability is an interesting issue as well, explored by and Harmon (2019) and Gambier (2018), among others. The western tradition includes the contributions by Vinay and Darbelnet, Urtado Albir and Molina Martinez, Nida, Newmark, Chesterman etc. The Russian tradition includes theoreticians such as Retsker, Barhudarov, Komissarov, Latishev, Alekseeva etc. For the purposes of the present research, the propositions by Albir and Molina will be employed, according to whom there is a clear disctinction between strategies of translation and translation techniques where strategies have to do with the process of translation and techniques - with its result. In view of the fact that the paper works with a corpus of film titles and their already existing established translations - that is, with the product of the translation - the only available object of observation, description and analysis includes the techniques and not the strategies of translation which the tranlator has used in the process of translating itself. Since the employed method of translation and the specific techniques at text level through which that method is realized are fundamentally interrelated, it can be assumed that the method can be recreated in the process of analysis based on the techniques observed. The specific strategies used by the tranlator in the process can only be subject to speculation and guessing, however, since, on the one hand, they can be not only verbal but also non-verbal, conscious and unconscious, and, on the other hand, the same strategy (regardless of whether it concerns problems with comprehension or with reformulation) can result in the selection of different techniques/combinations of techniques for resolving the problem which occurred. This paper aims to investigate the frequency of two prevailing translation techniques in the bilingual lexicographic context, which analyzes the Arabic and English writings with a specific focus on Islamic financial and economic terms (IFETs). Furthermore, it attempts to report the preferences of dictionary users who are either translators or translation students. For this purpose, a monolingual dictionary specialized in IFETs was carried out to conduct the analysis, out of which, one hundred terms were randomly selected. These terms were analyzed referentially and technically. Additionally, a search of translational equivalents in two Arabic-English specialized dictionaries was carried out. The IFETs with no entries in the said bilingual dictionaries were rendered into English by using two translation techniques, namely paraphrasing and definition techniques. The results revealed that paraphrasing using a related word was the most frequently used technique than the definition technique. The meanings of 31 terms were adequately conveyed via paraphrasing technique, while only one term was translated with a definition technique. Thus, this study pointed out the pertinent role of the paraphrasing technique in solving the untranslatability of many deeply cultural-bound terms. However, a preliminary survey was conducted to fulfill this study's second aim, which showed that most of the respondents preferred to utilize definitional technique, instead of paraphrasing. The following article discusses the translation problems of a specific kind of lexical units, the beastionyms, which have been defined as the names given to different science-fiction and fantasy creatures. Walter Moers is well-known in Poland as the author of Camonian novels and is increasingly popular with readers in Poland. The theoretical part of this paper describes the concept of a beastionym as a lexical unit being a transitional form between an appellative and a proper name. The author presents selected examples of how beastionyms function in literature and audio-visual products, relating them to chrematonyms according to Ronneberger-Sibold (2004). The beastionyms described in the article have been divided into speaking, allusive and sound-symbolic lexical units. The basis for this division was the work of Dieter Lamping (1983). The theoretical part also briefly presents translation techniques that can be implemented in the process of beastionyms' translation. This paper is focused, for economic reasons, on the translation of beastionyms, which characterize their bearers and divide them into lexical units indicating the bearer's habitat, appearance and behaviour. Monolingual dictionaries of German, Polish, and, in special cases, English have been used to describe individual examples. Lexemes with special cultural significance were described with reference to the relevant literature. The article provides a detailed description of these lexical units and gives a qualitative translation analysis of different translation techniques, which were used in the Polish rendition of the novel „Der Schrecksenmeister" (written by Walter Moers) to create a successful translation of beastionyms. Better translation produced by computation linguistics should be evaluated through linguistics theory. This research aims to describe translation techniques between Google Translate and U-Dictionary. The study used a qualitative research method with a descriptive design. This design was used to describe the occurrences of translation techniques in both translation machine, with the researchers serving as an instrument to compare translation techniques which is produced on machine. The data are from expository text entitled “Importance of Good Manners in Every Day Life”. The total data are 122 words/phrases which are pairs of translations, English as source language and Indonesia as target language. The result shows that Google Translate apply five of Molina & Albir’s (2002) eighteen translation techniques, while U-dictionary apply seven techniques. Google Translate dominantly apply literal translation techniques (86,8%) followed by reduction translation techniques (4,9%). U-dictionary also dominantly apply literal translation techniques (75,4%), but follows with the variation translation techniques (13,1%). This study showed that both machines produced different target texts for the same source language due to different applications of techniques, with U-dictionary proven to apply more variety of translation techniques than Google Translate. The researcher hopes this study can be used as an evaluation for improving the performance of machine translations.

The research aimed to describe the translation techniques and translation qualities of Dayak cultural terms. The data were obtained from tatum, an oral culture of Dayak that had been transcribed and rewritten in Dayak Ngaju, Indonesian and English in a book entitled The Ot Danum from Tumbang Miri until Tumbang Rungan. The research used descriptive qualitative method with content analysis. It attempted to explain the translation techniques and translation qualities of Dayak cultural terms that were translated from Dayak Ngaju to Indonesian and from Indonesian to English. The Dayak cultural terms analysed were related to organization, customs, belief, and kinship system of Dayak. The translation techniques of Dayak cultural terms from Dayak Ngaju to Indonesian were pure borrowing, naturalized borrowing, established equivalent, generalization, variant borrowing, description, and amplification, and the translation qualities were 2.80 of accuracy and 2.84 of acceptablity. The Dayak cultural terms found in the target language (Indonesian translation) were decreased in number as the effect of the translation techniques used. The translation technique of Dayak cultural terms from Indonesian to English was pure borrowing, and the translation quality were 3 of accuracy and 2.75 of acceptability.

Apart from the importance of accurate meaning transference, the key to English translation of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) terms lies in the proper translation of term forms, in particular, of long term structures and length. This article reports on an empirical study of the English translation of long TCM terms by the following procedures: (1) collecting 1220 TCM terms and their English translations from dictionaries, journals and official websites related to TCM terminology translation; (2) segmenting and POS-tagging with ICTCLAS to obtain 823 long TCM terms with 3 or more Chinese words; (3) selecting 150 out of the 823 long TCM terms through random sampling; (4) POS-tagging the 150 English translations with CLAWS5; (5) basing on the parallel corpus and systematically discussing the structures, term length change, translation techniques and translation regularities generalized from the English translation of long TCM terms. The result shows nominalization, shift of some pre-modifiers into post-modifiers, and amplification of a predicate in the 9 kinds of structural features, and some translation techniques like literal translation, paraphrase, adaptation, amplification and simplification employed in the English translation of long TCM terms. Collocations are elements that must be given special attention in translation, because they are essential for the correctness and the naturalness of any target text. Starting from the assumption that target texts reflect the norms followed by the text producer, the author examines a series of political speeches in English, along with their official Romanian variants, with a view to identifying the manner in which the Romanian translators of such texts should deal with their collocations and specific expressions. With the impact of globalization, English-language movies are being watched all over the world. Some TV channels broadcast English movies in original language some deliver it to their audience through translation. Working on the translation of movies and movie titles in particular requires a lot of skills, keeping in mind that nowadays it has become a commercial business. In most cases English movies are being promoted to Romanian audience through movie titles and short trailers reflecting the story the movie is based on. The present article displays the peculiarities of English movie titles (registered in weekly TV Mania magazine issued in 2014) translated into Romanian, whereby some techniques applied to movie title translation are discussed. The article presents a cross-linguistic perspective on the conceptualization and expression of motion in English and Romanian, two typologically distinct languages from the point of view of the well-known typology of "satellite-framed" or "high manner languages" and "verb-framed" or "low-manner" languages developed by L. Talmy and D. Slobin. The main aim is to reveal the differences between two languages concerning the manner of motion and path expression inside the sentence and the impact on the interlinguistic communication. The article also discusses the issue of the so-called fictive motion, particularly to what extent the typological distinctions are reflected in the conceptualization of static situations through motion verbs. The examples containing fictive motion verbs were selected from the Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien and the research interest was focused on the strategies used by the translator when dealing with the transfer of fictive motion expressions from English into Romanian. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper considers the problems associated with comprehension and translation of idioms within the framework of the theory of linguistic relativity and the translation theories. The main statements of these theories used for explaining the difficulties of idioms’ translation from/into the English or Lithuanian language are presented. The considered problems are analysed from various perspectives. Case studies, demonstrating different nomination principles used in English and Lithuanian due to different approaches of the native speakers of these languages to the same objects or ‘pieces’ of reality are provided. The comparative analysis of English and Lithuanian idioms as the most interesting and peculiar expressions of a language, showing its unique character, is performed and the arising difficulties and the available techniques of idioms’ translation are demonstrated, taking into account the main statements of the theories of linguistic relativity and translation. Special attention is paid to idioms, whose main ideas are expressed differently in the considered languages and, therefore, present many difficulties to non-native speakers. The influence of traditions, culture, the environment and other factors on the form and contents of the idioms in each of the considered languages is also shown. The analysis performed demonstrates the effectiveness of the theory of linguistic relativity in explaining the nature and causes of the arising comprehension and translation problems, as well as its possibilities to give a translator a native speaker’s insight and help him\her avoid some typical errors. The recommendations of how to make a translation of idioms more accurate and authentic by using the appropriate translation techniques are also given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the World War II, a great number of new words in English have appeared due to the changes of political situation, the globalization of economy, the development of science and technology, the constant coming-out of high tech products, and the influence exerted by culture and education.
