The underground thermal fluid is one of the significant factors controlling the formation and quality of reservoirs. The Huangliu Formation (N1h) in YF1 area of the central depression belt in the Yinggehai Basin, South China Sea, is characterized by intense thermal fluid activities related to mud diapir and large-scale shallow-water gravity flow deposits. The multi-episodic invasion of high-temperature and CO2-rich thermal fluid into the formation induces complex water-rock reaction during diagenetic process, providing a preferable investigation opportunity for revealing how thermal fluid affects reservoir quality. This study characterizes the reservoirs in the formation through core and thin section analyses as well as physical property test. The reservoirs are dominated by fine-grained sandstone characterized by medium porosity (15.2–21.3%) and lower permeability (0.56–15.75mD). Based on an analysis of casting thin section, cathode luminescence (CL), scanning electron microscope (SEM), carbon and oxygen isotope, inclusion test, and electron-probe microanalysis (EPMA), we systematically investigate the diagenetic patterns and pore evolution process for the reservoirs in the formation. The episodic invasion of thermal fluid occurred approximately 0.4 Ma ago plays an important role in controlling reservoir development: The CO2-rich formation water induces massive late-stage dissolution, resulting in a higher proportion of dissolved pores (38.7–46.4%), which improves the porosity of reservoirs at a depth of 2600–3100 m. Nevertheless, the late dissolution together with carbonate cementation occurred in closed diagenetic system blocks most seepage channels. Furthermore, the relatively high level clay mineral transformation in the YF1 area leads to a higher content of authigenic illite (44–62%) in the formation. Massive authigenic illite severely blocks the pore throats in fine sandstone, reducing permeability. This study offers an insight to the understanding of mud diapir-derived thermal fluid affecting and controlling the quality of reservoirs in some areas of the Yinggehai Basin.

Scotland for its small size possesses a more complex geology than anywhere else in the world, consequently the country has a rich mineral legacy. There are around 650 mineral species now known to occur in Scotland; most of these are silicates, but the assemblage also includes oxides, sulphides and sulphates. Most formed by igneous or metamorphic processes. The igneous minerals produced depends on the nature of the intrusion, be it granitoid or basic to ultrabasic, and also on when it formed in the intrusive cycle; i.e. in early magmatic stages or in late-stage veining. Metamorphic minerals are the product of temperature, pressure and the nature of the precursor rock. A few minerals, such as carbonates and iron oxides are of sedimentary origin, and some formed by the addition of material (mostly metal elements) to rocks, a process known as mineralisation. The choice of mineral GCR sites is based on the presence of rare species and/or unusually large concentrations of minerals and/or the provision of good evidence of geological processes. All sites have national significance and the Meall Tairneachan-Creag An Loch Ba–Zn–Pb deposit is of world-class importance. The coverage of the nation’s mineral species is demonstrated by providing a brief description of them which highlights the sites at which they occur. Thus it will be seen that some minerals are predominant at a number of sites: e.g. galena is the main ore mineral at Leadhills-Wanlockhead, Tyndrum and Strontian. Similarly silica, mostly in the form of quartz is present at many sites, but only in its more exotic form such as agate or cairngorm is it the raison d’etre for its choice as a GCR site.

This, the fourth paper on Scottish Mineral GCR sites, deals with minerals produced during the late stages of granitic rocks creation. Five sites are described and interpreted, encompassing both minerals within intrusive rocks and those which formed in the adjacent country rocks. The former range from previously-mined, porphyry-style copper-molybdnum sulphide concentrations to one of the few Scottish occurrences of tungsten mineralization. Mineral deposits formed in mostly calcareous country rocks by the exchange of elements between granitic bodies and them are generally referred to as skarns. They are geographically more widespread than the within-granite bodies, and comprise calc-silicate minerals such as diopside, grossular garnet, wollastonite and, more rarely vesuvianite. In one instance, the skarns contain a wide range of mineral assemblages including some with boron fluoride minerals and mineable concentrations of iron ore. Probably the most enigmatic of these is an apparent exoskarn type assemblage but is devoid of an associated granite.

Rare earth elements (REEs) mobilize, fractionate, and are re-distributed during supergene processes, and thus provide a powerful tool with which to quantitatively reconstruct the effects of chemical weathering. Moreover, under certain conditions, the REEs can concentrate to levels in the regolith sufficient to form giant regolith-hosted REE deposits, that are now responsible for much of the World’s production of heavy REEs (HREEs). Understanding the supergene behavior of the REEs is an important first step towards applying the REEs as a geochemical tool and meeting the growing global demand of the REEs. Thermodynamic calculations predict that dissolution of the main REE minerals in REE-rich protoliths, namely synchysite-(Y), gadolinite-(Y), hingganite-(Y), yttrialite-(Y), allanite-(Ce), eudialyte, chevkinite-(Ce), britholite, euxenite and loparite-(Ce), should occur spontaneously during weathering. It therefore follows that a high abundance of these minerals in the protolith implies high mobility of the REEs during weathering and consequently a high potential for the discovery of economic REE resources. Dissolution of apatite is promoted by metamictization or structural distortion and could be also important at low pH. In contrast, some LREE-fluorocarbonate minerals, notably bastnasite-(Ce) and parisite-(Ce), and monazite-(Ce) are likely thermodynamically stable in acidic environments. Thus, they would be preserved in the regolith. Zircon, titanite, aeschynite, fergusonite, and xenotime-(Y) are resistant to acidic dissolution, consistent with their common occurrence as residual minerals. In the cases of the world-class regolith-hosted REE deposits in South China, the groundwater is mildly acidic to circumneutral and carbonate-rich. The REEs are consequently transported dominantly as hydrated cations and carbonate complexes, depending on the pH. The general inheritance of the REE pattern of the regolith groundwater in the clay-sorbed fraction in the regolith indicates that the REEs in regolith are scavenged from the regolith groundwater. Elemental anomalies of specific REEs in the clay-sorbed fraction are very likely caused by an anomalously high REECO3+ fraction in the corresponding regolith groundwater, suggesting a preferential uptake of the REECO3+ complexes by the clay minerals, feasibly by halloysite through intercalation as interlayer complexes. This reaction is expected to be particularly important for the sorption and enrichment of the HREEs in the regolith. Depending on the pH and carbonate concentration of the water, surface complexation on clay minerals or interlayer intercalation particularly in halloysite control the pattern of REE enrichment. Mixing of the regolith groundwater with the alkaline and carbonate-rich aquifer groundwater increases the pH and carbonate concentration and, in turn, affects the ability of the mixed water to transport the HREEs. Interplay of aqueous complexation with the regolith mineralogy significantly affects the REE fractionation and re-distribution during groundwater-regolith interaction.

Columnar-jointed tuffs (bentonites) are located below the Lower Carboniferous Tideswell Dale Sill, Derbyshire, in an abandoned quarry. There are three zones of prismatic joints, columnar joints (∼60 cm thick and mean column width of 4.1 cm) and massive, conchoidally fractured rock sequentially from the dolerite contact downwards. The rocks are very fine-grained (1–10 µm) and consist mainly of sanidine, interlayered illite/smectite, and hematite, with minor quartz, apatite, montmorillonite, anatase and detrital minerals. High K2O and Fe2O3, low Na2O and low MgO are interpreted as due to alteration of felsic volcanic ash. The bentonite was contact-metamorphosed by the sill to temperatures of c. 300 °C. The progression of fracture geometries, thermal considerations and application of theories of column formation indicate that columns formed downwards away from the sill, due to prograde contact metamorphism of the originally clay-rich bentonite. The formation of columnar fracture networks by shrinkage due to igneous heating may have implications for the effectiveness of bentonite as a barrier for disposal of high-level radioactive waste. Regional dimensions include documenting widespread felsic explosive volcanism and inferring a Triassic oxidation event from palaeomagnetic data.

The Physico-chemical and mineralogical properties of the Cretaceous shales of Calabar Flank southeastern Nigeria were examined for their Provenance, Paleo-weathering Conditions and Industrial Applications. Twenty samples of shale from Ekekpon and Nkporo Formations were analysed using X-Ray Fluorescence, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and geotechnical techniques. Results from the major oxides of elements revealed that the Nkporo Shale is enriched with SiO2 > Al2O3 > LOI > Fe2O3 > SO3 while the Ekepkon shale is also enriched in SiO2 > Al2O3 > LOI > Fe2O3 > CaO > K2O. The XRD revealed kaolinite as the major clay mineral, while other non-clay minerals are quartz, vallerite, mica, nacaphite, sodalite. The SEM shows that the Ekepkon Shale is enriched in calcium. The correlation matrix revealed SiO2 resides more in the quartz phase of the Nkporo Shales, while in the Ekekpon Shale the SiO2 is associated with the clay. The element ratios and discrimination diagrams revealed that the provenance of the shales is of intermediate to mafic igneous rocks and a tectonic setting of continental to oceanic arcs. The presence of kaolinite in the Nkporo Shale with the chemical index of alteration (CIA) values ranging from 83.58 to 96.93, indicated that the shale is derived from intensive chemical weathering in the source area. The low CIA values (37.90–76.96) in Ekenkpon Shale is attributed to CaO and calcium enrichment in the shale and the shale contains high quartz and kaolinite therefore the shale is suggested to have been derived from an intermediate to intense weathering activities in the source area. The geotechnical properties revealed that both shales are suitable for ceramic and refractory industries. The Ekenkpon Shale will be suitable for use as filling material and as raw material in cement industries. However, the shales do not meet the specifications for paper and rubber production due to the high contents of iron oxide, lime, magnesia, potash and soda.

Excimer nano-second laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ns-LA-ICP-MS) is an important tool in chemical characterization of Cu alloys. However, variable matrix-induced elemental fractionation in Cu alloys poses a significant challenge. We systematically investigate this issue by analysing the Cultural Heritage Alloy Reference Material Set (CHARM) of Cu alloy targets. The extent to which silicate glass reference materials can be used when analysing Cu alloy targets is determined, as is the optimal internal standard, for a wide range of Cu alloy compositions. Analyses were further optimized by quantitative assessments of the use of CHARM end-member materials as external standards for other CHARM Cu alloy targets. The variable magnitude of the observed matrix effects is most readily explained by variations in Cu/Zn ratios and resulting differences in melting and boiling points, compared with external reference materials, making the Zn-rich Cu alloy targets most prone to matrix effects. With the correct choice of an external matrix-matched standard (Pb-rich CHARM reference material 32X LB14F) and internal element standardization, an accuracy of < 20% can be achieved for virtually all elements of interest in brass and bronze artefacts, which is a significant improvement compared with the use of glass external reference materials.

The Tampanchi Ultramafic–Mafic Complex (TUMC), located in the central segment of the Cordillera Real (Ecuador), is an oval-shaped intrusive body of approximately 18 km2 emplaced within a Cretaceous metavolcano-sedimentary sequence. Field investigations, zircon geochronology, mineral and whole-rock elemental and isotopic compositions constrain the nature of the parental magma as well as the physical conditions of emplacement, age of crystallization and tectonic setting of formation of the TUMC. The Complex consist of wehrlite and olivine-hornblende clinopyroxenite crosscut by hornblende gabbros and minor dikes/veins of diorite and granite. Hornblendites formed mainly at the contact between the olivine-hornblende clinopyroxenite and the intrusive hornblende gabbros by reaction-replacement processes. Geochemical data for both the wehrlites and pyroxenites define a trend with dominantly olivine and clinopyroxene accumulation, whereas a second trend is formed by hornblende gabbros that differentiated to leucocratic rocks, with amphibole as the dominant fractionating mafic phase. The trace elements show enrichment in large-ion lithophile elements, depletion in high field strength elements (Nb, Zr, Ti) and P, and enrichment in Pb, Sr and Ba relative to primitive mantle, indicating subduction-related parental liquids. The Nd and Sr isotopic composition suggests a uniform mantle source metasomatized by subducted crustal components. Thermobarometric estimations constrain emplacement and crystallization at intermediate to shallow continental crust levels (∼12.5 km depth) of hydrated basaltic melt under oxygen fugacity conditions above the nickel-nickel oxide buffer (ΔNNO = 0 to 2). Zircon SHRIMP U-Th-Pb age data constrain crystallization at 75.1–76.0 Ma, with scarce inherited zircons that record limited recycling of the Cordillera Real basement. These results confirm magmatic arc activity at the continental margin of South America during the late Cretaceous as a result of an E-dipping subduction zone prior to the accretion of the Ecuadorian-Colombian-Caribbean oceanic plateau, and support simultaneous double subduction at the northwest margin of South America during the Cretaceous. HP pelitic granulites associated with eclogites from the Kharta Gneiss are found in the Thongmon area, central Himalaya, which provides significant constraints for the tectonic evolution of the Himalayan orogeny. Three generations of garnets are identified in pelitic granulites (DR15P15). The first generation of garnet is core sections of euhedral to subhedral porphyroblasts (Grt-I core) followed by growth of Grt-I mantle during the heating stage. The third generation of garnet is represented by thin rims of Grt-I and small grains (Grt-II) in the matrix, which likely nucleated and grew in response to peritectic reaction during exhumation. Petrographic evidence and P–T pseudosection calculation reveal a four-stages metamorphic evolution: 1) a prograde metamorphic stage (M1) represented by Grt-I core and its mineral inclusions rutile, ilmenite and quartz with metamorphic conditions of 740–760 °C and 13–16 kbar; 2) a near isobaric heating stage with slightly decompression to HP granulite-facies (M2, 820–840 °C, 13–14 kbar) indicated by the composition of Grt-I mantle and the increase of Zr concentrations of rutile in it; 3) a heating decompression stage (M3) supported by a decrease in grossular content in the Grt-I rim and higher XAn in plagioclase, yielding T > 860 °C and P = 10–11 kbar in the sillimanite stability field; 4) a final decompression stage followed by cooling (M4, T ~ 800 °C and P = 6–8 kbar) indicated by biotite replacing sillimanite and lower Ti content in biotite in the matrix. Based on the zircon trace element geochemistry, zircon inclusions, and the REE partitioning between garnet and zircon, the metamorphic zircon rims with middle Miocene age (16–13 Ma) probably grew during Grt-I rim/Grt-II formation at granulite facies stage (M3). The P–T history of the pelitic granulites of the Kharta Gneiss indicates that they were subducted beneath the Asian plate and exhumed to middle-lower crustal depths prior to 14–13 Ma due to the activity of STDS.

Pedogenic carbonates are considered important indicators of past climatic changes. Their formation is due to calcite accumulation through evaporation processes in arid or semi-arid regions. Over time, secondary carbonate accumulation results in the development of calcic and petrocalcic horizons in soil profiles. In this study, we conducted an analysis of pedogenic carbonates as records of paleoenvironmental characteristics in the Teotihuacan Valley, Basin of Mexico. Micromorphological, mineralogical, and geochemical characteristics of secondary carbonates from three paleosol profiles (Cerro Gordo 1, Cerro Gordo 2, and Maseca 1) were analyzed. Pedogenic carbonates were characterized by irregular and variable carbonate crystal sizes, inclusions of soil particles, and dark or light micrite and microsparite laminations. Micromorphology and scanning electron microscopy revealed weathered plagioclase minerals as a potential source of calcium for carbonate precipitation. The 87Sr/86Sr ratio of carbonate laminar crusts and nodules from the analyses pedons in the study area also indicated that rocks of the Transmexican Volcanic Belt were the principal source of Ca and Sr for carbonates, while contribution of a far-distance eolian input was minimal. The δ13C isotopic composition evidenced a mixture of C3 and C4 plants during the Pleistocene and a transition to a higher proportion of C4 vegetal cover during the Holocene. This agreed with an increase in modeled paleo-temperature from 10.9 °C to 13.7 °C based on 18O-temperature equations. Our results support those determined for the regional paleoenvironment during the Pleistocene, the Pleistocene-Holocene transition and Mid-Late Holocene.

The Early Paleozoic eclogite belt extends discontinuously for ~500 km within the East Kunlun Orogen (EKO) and records the subduction history of the Proto-Tethys Ocean. This eclogite belt, therefore, is an excellent site for studying the first-order transition in convergent-margin tectonic systems, and the tectonic events associated with subduction and collision can be determined by reconstructing the high-pressure (HP)–ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) P–T–time path. In this contribution, we present P–T results from phase equilibrium modeling and Zr-in-rutile/titanite thermometry for eclogites located on the east and west sides of the EKO. In the eastern EKO, MT–UHP eclogite records peak conditions of ~30 kbar/650–720 °C, retrograde conditions of 10 kbar at ~650–700 °C, and then further retrograde conditions at 3–6 kbar and 500–580 °C. In the western EKO, LT–HP eclogite records peak conditions of ~27 kbar at 570 °C and then retrograde conditions at 10 ± 2 kbar/470–560 °C. These two types of eclogite record oceanic subduction (west) and continental collision (east), respectively. The EKO, therefore, contains two types of eclogites that indicate two end-member subduction complexes within the orogenic belt, further indicating that there are differences in the subduction-depth and collision-time from east to west. This finding is consistent with asymmetric suturing of the subducted Proto-Tethys Ocean within the EKO. Together, the P–T conditions and time-scales of the HP–UHP metamorphism can be applied to understand the process from subduction to collision between the Qaidam Block and the South Kunlun Block, as a consequence of asymmetric closure of the Proto-Tethys Ocean.

Collision-induced subduction transference may have triggered subduction of the Neo-Tethys oceanic lithosphere. To verify this proposition, we present an integrated geochemical and geochronological studies of new and published data of the Permian-Triassic magmatism in the Lhasa Terrane. The newly identified Chongni mafic intrusions (gabbros and diorites) in the North Lhasa Terrane (NLT) were emplaced during the Early Permian (ca. 275 Ma). The mafic rocks have (87Sr/86Sr)t ratios between 0.7037 and 0.7042, and eNd(t) values between + 5.2 and + 5.8. The zircons of the Chongni mafic rock samples have eHf(t) values from + 9.1 to + 12.9. The isotopic data in conjunction with trace element features suggest that the Chongni mafic intrusions have been derived mainly by partial melting of a metasomatized mantle wedge source. The newly identified Quxu granodiorites and hornblende gabbros in the South Lhasa Terrane (SLT) were emplaced in the Late Triassic (ca. 228–203 Ma). The granodiorites are characterized by (87Sr/86Sr)t ratios of 0.7036–0.7037 and eNd(t) values of +6.6 to +6.7, while the hornblende gabbro samples have (87Sr/86Sr)t ratios of 0.7033–0.7035 and eNd(t) values of +7.3 to +7.4. The zircons of the granodiorite and hornblende gabbro samples revealed eHf(t) values of +10.3 to +14.0 and +10.8 to +16.4, respectively. The isotopic data in combination with trace element signatures suggest that the granodiorites were derived from a juvenile basaltic lower crust with a minor input of mantle components, while the hornblende gabbros are interpreted to have formed during partial melting of a formerly metasomatized depleted mantle wedge source. The Early Permian and Late Triassic magmatic rocks consistently show arc-related signatures, which probably record the northward subduction of the Sumdo Paleo-Tethys and the Neo-Tethys oceanic slabs, respectively. This evidence, in combination with that of other studies on the Permian-Triassic magmatism across the Lhasa Terrane, indicates that arc magmatism within the NLT switched to collisional magmatism at ca. 260 Ma due to the collision of oceanic islands/plateaus and, further on, the collision of the SLT with the NLT. Furthermore, the change from ca. 265–255 Ma alkaline magmatism to ca. 240–200 Ma calc‐alkaline magmatism within the SLT may reflect the geodynamic transition from lithospheric extension to Andean-style orogenesis. Therefore, we propose that subduction initiation of the Neo-Tethys oceanic lithosphere in the Tibetan Plateau resulted from the southward transference of the Sumdo Paleo-Tethys subduction zone, involving the collision of oceanic islands/plateaus and, subsequently, the collision of the SLT with the NLT. Additionally, the geological records of the Tethyan orogenic system suggest that the subduction initiation of the Neo-Tethys oceanic lithosphere is a uniform response to the collision between Cimmeria and Eurasia.

The Sanchakou intrusive complex (containing quartz diorite, porphyritic granodiorite, granodiorite, fine-grained granodiorite, diorite porphyry and hornblende gabbro) is located at the eastern part of the Dananhu-Tousuquan island arc belt, Eastern Tianshan. Zircon U-Pb ages suggest that the above six units were emplaced at 446 Ma to 238 Ma. The Sanchakou intrusive complex therefore provides a unique opportunity to gain a better understanding of the Paleozoic-Mesozoic magmatism and its evolution in the Eastern Tianshan. The granitoids form a subduction related calc-alkaline to low K (tholeiitic) magmatic series, characterized by enrichment in LILE and depletion in HFSE. They have low initial 87Sr/86Sr, high eNd(t) and eHf(t) values. As well as the above geochemical features, the quartz diorite, porphyritic granodiorite and fine-grained granodiorite have low Nb/U and Ta/U values, relatively high Mg#, Ti/Zr and Ti/Y values, indicating a potential role of the subducted slab in their petrogenesis. The granodiorite units have low Nb/U, Ta/U and Mg# values, and high (La/Yb)N values, suggesting an origin from the melting of juvenile lower crust. The Sanchakou diorite porphyry has positive eNd(t) and eHf(t), low SiO2 and (87Sr/86Sr)i, and high MgO, Mg#, Ti/Y and Ti/Zr values, indicating it was likely sourced from depleted mantle. The Mesozoic hornblende gabbro has low SiO2, relatively high TiO2, MgO, Al2O3 and (La/Yb)N, and minor depletion in Nb-Ta, implying an E-MORB-like mantle source. Integrating available tectonic, stratigraphic and geochemical data, we propose that the Sanchakou quartz diorite, porphyritic granodiorite, granodiorite and fine-grained granodiorite were formed in a double-side subduction system. The younger Permian diorite porphyry was produced in a post-collisional extensional setting and the Triassic hornblende gabbro was likely formed in an intraplate environment.

The interaction of natural eclogite (Ecl) with synthetic hydrous carbonate melts with Na:K = 0:1 (KH2) and 1:1 (NKH2) was studied in multianvil experiments at 3-6 GPa and 850-1250 °C. The interaction with KH2 consumes garnet and clinopyroxene producing phlogopite and calcite-dolomite solid solution. Besides, the interaction yields a decrease in the jadeite component of clinopyroxene, evolving eclogite toward pyroxenite. This is consistent with a metasomatic alteration of eclogite xenoliths, manifested as Na-poor “spongy” clinopyroxene, replacing primary omphacite, and kelyphitic rims around garnet, containing phlogopite and carbonates. The interaction with NKH2 also produces phlogopite and carbonate, but the latter is more magnesian and represented by magnesite, above the solidus, and magnesite + dolomite below the solidus. The interaction with NKH2 increases the jadeite component in clinopyroxene and grossular component in garnet, evolving eclogite Group A to eclogite Group B. The studied systems have H2O/K2O = 2, like that in phlogopite, and therefore correspond to carbonated phlogopite eclogite under fluid-absent conditions. Based on the obtained results its solidus is situated near 1050 °C at 3 GPa and decreases to 950 °C at 6 GPa. Thus, hydrous K- and Na-K-carbonatite melts can coexist with eclogite in SCLM at depths exceeding 120-170 km, and solidify as temperature decreases below 950-1050 °C according to the following solidus reactions: pyrope + diopside + melt → phlogopite + dolomite, below 6 GPa, and pyrope + diopside + melt → phlogopite + magnesite + grossular, at 6 GPa. The melting reaction, involving phlogopite and dolomite, suggests the partial melting at the peak of ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism (UHPM) during continent-continent plate collision. The prograde P-T path of UHPM crosses the solidus of clinopyroxene + garnet + phlogopite + dolomite assemblage at 4.7-5.2 GPa and 970-990 °C and yields the formation of hydrous K-carbonatite melt-fluid in situ. This melt could be responsible for the formation of K-bearing clinopyroxenes and microdiamonds in the UHPM marbles in the Kokchetav massif, Kazakhstan. The retrograde P-T path intersects the solidus that has a negative Clapeyron slope in the diamond stability field. Thus, the hydrous K-carbonatite melt should disappear soon after the peak of metamorphism reacting with garnet to produce Ca-Mg carbonates and phlogopite.

The Wujiaping Sn deposit is located at the northern Dayishan ore field, South China, whose ore veins are mainly hosted in the Dayishan pluton. LA–ICP–MS zircon U–Pb dating for the medium-fine grained- and medium-coarse grained-biotite monzogranite of Dayishan pluton yields emplacement ages of 154.5 ± 1.6 Ma (MSWD = 2.0) and 155.5 ± 0.5 Ma (MSWD = 1.9), respectively, which are consistent with the muscovite 40Ar-39Ar plateau age of 150.4 ± 0.9 Ma for the quartz vein type ore veins. It is indicated that the Sn mineralization in the Wujiaping deposit is related to the Late Jurassic granitic magmatism. These granites show the geochemical features of highly fractionated S-type granite: 1) low Zr + Nb + Ce + Y contents ( 1.1); 3) low crystallization temperature (mean = 688 °C); 4) high Rb/Sr ratios (mostly > 48); 5) high differentiation index (DI > 90); and 6) low CaO, P2O5, Sr, and Eu contents. Whole rocks isotopes show that these granites shows variable initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.70251–0.71208), negative eNd(t) values (−7.94–5.62) and old two stage Nd model ages of 1491–1563 Ma. LA–MC–ICP–MS zircon Lu–Hf isotopes show that the medium-fine-grained monzogranite have positive eHf(t) values of 0.37–8.5 and two stage Hf model ages of 662–1180 Ma, whereas the medium-coarse grained-biotite monzogranite have negative eHf(t) values of −6.42–3.55 and two stage Hf model ages of 1431–1599 Ma. It is proposed of that these granites are originated from melts mixed by crustal- and mantle-constituents and are formed in an extensional setting caused by the subduction of the Palaeo-pacific plate. The low LogfO2 values calculated through zircons (−21.2–13.1) and high F contents (3630–5120 ppm) indicate the granites derived from reduced and F-rich melts. Therefore, the reduced melt is highly fractionated and enriched in Sn and F, resulting in the large scale Sn mineralization in the Dayishan ore field.

Mechanisms for invisible gold enrichment hosted within Paleoproterozoic Fe-rich metamorphic rocks (marble, biotite schist, and quartz-feldspar schist) in the Liaodong Peninsula, NE China are still unclear. In this study, we choose the Xiaotongjiapuzi deposit as a case study, and present a detailed ore deposit geology and dataset of in situ chemical compositions of Fe-sulfides to address this issue. Fe-sulfides have the following paragenesis: metamorphic pyrite (Py0), first-ore stage pyrite (Py1, Py2), and a second-ore stage comprising arsenopyrite (Apy1, Apy2) and two phases of marcasite (Mas(a-b)). Evaporites were deposited in every saline lake in the western Qaidam Basin (QB) during the late Quaternary, but the role of the Quaternary glacial environment in the formation of evaporite deposits remains to be clarified. In this paper, five upper Quaternary evaporite-bearing profiles in the western QB are studied. Uranium-thorium (U–Th) dating was applied to obtain the depositional ages of these profiles, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis was applied to identify the evaporite minerals. The U–Th dating results indicate that halite (NaCl)-dominated profile D08 and mirabilite (Na2SO4·10H2O)-dominated profile MXK were deposited between 146.1 ± 53.4 ka and 171.3 ± 27.2 ka, mainly corresponding to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6; the bloedite (Na2Mg(SO4)2·4H2O)-dominated profiles WMX1 and WMX2 were deposited between 182.1 ± 2.5 ka and 206.7 ± 7.0 ka, mainly corresponding to the late period of MIS7; and the mirabilite and halite-dominated salt layers in profile D30 were deposited between 9.0 ± 0.7 ka and 14.3 ± 1.6 ka, with mirabilite deposit ages corresponding to MIS2 and early MIS1. The minerals in the profiles identified by XRD analyses are mirabilite, thenardite (Na2SO4), bloedite, gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), starkeyite (MgSO4·4H2O), hexahydrite (MgSO4·6H2O) and halite. This study, combined with those of previously reported evaporite deposits in the western QB, indicates that MIS7, MIS6 and MIS2 were important evaporite deposition periods in the late Quaternary. Evaporite depositions in the QB during MIS6 and MIS2 were attributed to a decrease in temperature and shrinkage of the saline lake hydrosphere. The cold glacial climate during MIS6 and MIS2 was conducive to mirabilite deposition in the western QB, while the relatively warm climate of the late period MIS7 was conducive to bloedite deposition.

Discovering ore deposits is becoming increasingly difficult, and this is particularly true in areas of glaciated terrains. As a potential exploration tool for such terrains, we test the vectoring capacities of trace element and sulfur isotope characteristics of pyrite, combined with quantitative statistical methods of whole-rock geochemical datasets. Our target is the Rajapalot gold–cobalt project in northern Finland, where metamorphosed Paleoproterozoic volcanic and sedimentary rocks of the Peräpohja belt host recently discovered gold prospects, which also have significant cobalt enrichment. The focus is particularly put on a single gold–cobalt prospect, known as Raja, an excellent example of this unusual cobalt-enriched gold deposit, common in the metamorphosed terranes of northern Finland. The major lithologies at Rajapalot comprise amphibolite facies metamorphosed and polydeformed calcsilicate rocks that alternate with albitic units, mafic volcanic rocks, mica schist and quartzite. Mineralization at Rajapalot prospects is characterized by an older Co-mineralizing event and a younger high-grade Au mineralization with re-mobilization and re-deposition of Co. Detailed in situ laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) is a powerful technique that produces robust trace element and sulfur isotope databases from paragenetically and texturally well-characterized pyrite from the Raja prospect. The results are treated with appropriate log-ratio transformations and used for multivariate statistical data analysis, such as the computation of principal components. Application of these methods revealed that elements such as Co, Ni, Cu, Au, As, Ag, Mo, Bi, Te, Se, Sn, U, Tl and W have high vectoring capacities to discriminate between Co-only and Au–Co zones, as well as between mineralization stages. The systematic pyrite study suggests that homogenous sulfur isotopic characteristics (+1.3 ‰ to +5.9 ‰) and positive loadings of Co, Se, As, Te, Bi and Au onto PC1 are reflective of an early stage of Co mineralization, while the opposing negative loadings of Mo, Ni, W, Tl, Cu and Ag along PC1 are associated with pyrites from the Au-mineralizing event. The sulfur isotopic signature of the latter pyrite type is between −1.2 ‰ and +7.4 ‰. Subtle patterns recognized from the whole-rock geochemistry favor an As–Au–Se–Te–W–U signature along the positive axis of PC1 for the localization of high-grade Au–Co zones, whereas the element group Ni, Cu, Co, Te, Se and As, which has negative loadings onto PC2, will predict Co-only zones. This study shows the efficiency of trace element geochemistry in mineral exploration targeting, which has the capacity to define future targets by characterizing the metallogenic potential of a host rock, as well as distinguishing various stages of mineralization.

New 187Re-187Os, 87Rb-87Sr, triple O-isotope isotope, bulk rock highly siderophile- (HSE: Os, Ir, Ru, Pt, Pd, Re), major- and trace-element abundance data are reported for a variety of carbonaceous, ordinary and enstatite chondrite meteorites. In addition, new mineral chemical data are reported for the Chelyabinsk LL5 ordinary chondrite fall for comparison with existing chondrite data and to investigate element sequestration into metal and mineral phases within some chondrites. The focus of the study is to link the variations observed in the HSE abundances and Re-Os isotopes with other isotopic and elemental data to explore the relative roles of sample sizes, terrestrial alteration and parent body processes more fully on chondrite meteorite compositions. Trace element variations in Chelyabinsk silicate, oxide and metal grains highlight the importance of geochemical heterogeneity imparted by mineralogical variations and mode effects, as well as sample size. Using a range of sample powder aliquot sizes, it is possible to show that this becomes significant for the HSE at

This study aims to compare the fabrics of anthropogenic carbonates downstream of lime and steel disposal sites with models of carbonate precipitation from natural systems to elucidate potential drivers, precipitation mechanisms, morphological similarities, predictability in 3D facies distributions and depositional models of these systems. For this purpose, a combination of sedimentological, mineralogical and geochemical approaches is conducted including the analysis of microfacies (petrographic microscope and electron microscopy), X‐ray diffraction and hydrochemistry. The data show that both anthropogenic and natural systems exhibit clear proximal, middle and distal zones of carbonate precipitation. The main macroscopic differences are the dominance of swamp environments in the proximal zone and the prevalence of tufa‐like barrage‐and‐pool sequences in the middle and distal zones. Microfabrics in anthropogenic sites are comparable to travertines but lack the sub‐surface facies and at extreme pH exhibit sparry crusts without clear equivalents in travertines. This sedimentology of anthropogenic carbonates shows that calcite mineral formation is complex and not homogeneous or purely driven by thermodynamic processes. Considering the sedimentology of these human‐induced systems will help us understand precipitation mechanisms which will aid both efforts to utilise anthropogenic alkaline wastes for carbon capture and manage their environmental impacts.

Olivine is one of the most widespread minerals of the Earth's upper mantle. It is widely accepted in the scientific community, that during olivine interaction with water large amounts of hydrogen are released. On the other hand, the idea of an accumulation of huge hydrogen amounts in the core and lower mantle of the Earth is becoming more and more popular now. In this paper, we attempt to assess the possible interaction of hydrogen rising from the depths with olivine in the upper mantle, which has not been done before. Program GEMS was used for modeling calculations. The influence of the hydrogen amount on the serpentinization process at T = 323.15 ÷ 593.15 K and P = 3⋅107 ÷ 3⋅108 Pa has been estimated. The initial composition of the system was set as 1 mol of olivine (Fe0.1Mg0.9SiO4). The amount of added hydrogen was set as 1, 500, and 5000 mol. The water was not specified as a composition of the initial system. The simulation showed that hydrogen can cause the serpentinization process, which indicates in favor of the hypothesis about deep hydrogen sources, although it is not 100% proof of this.

The behavior of Ti-Nb-Ta is crucial to reveal the genesis of island arc magmatism. However, mobilization and fractionation of Ti-Nb-Ta in subduction zone settings remain poorly understood. The discovery of felsic veins rich in coarse-grained rutile within retrograde eclogite of the North Qaidam UHP metamorphic belt provides a unique and novel opportunity to study age variation during rutile formation and alteration, as well as Ti-Nb-Ta mobility and fractionation during fluid/melt-rock interaction. Rutile high-resolution elemental mapping, and U-Pb bulk grain (ID-TIMS), and in-situ U-Pb geochronology have been utilized to focus on the properties of rutile in both, felsic vein and retrograde eclogite host to gain insight into possible similarities and differences. Three groups of rutile were distinguished according to its host rock, trace elements signature, and genetical connection to ilmenite: eclogite-hosted rutile (Rt-1), felsic vein-hosted rutile not associated with ilmenite (Rt-2a), and associated with ilmenite (Rt-2b). Field evidence and rutile trace elements characteristics document the source of vein-hosted rutile to be mainly derived from the eclogite during fluid/melt-rock interaction. Principal Component Analysis reveals that Nb, Ta, Sn, and W are more enriched in Rt-2a compared to Rt-1; Rt-2b has higher Nb, U, and Hf than Rt-2a. High-resolution mapping across large rutile grains shows the enrichment of high field strength elements (HFSEs) in rutile near to ilmenite, which indicates a HFSEs back diffusion from the rutile–ilmenite boundary during the replacement of rutile by ilmenite. The Nb/Ta ratios of Rt-2a are lower than those of Rt-1, which result from different partition coefficients of Nb and Ta during fluid/melt-rock interaction. The diffusion-influenced rutile exhibits suprachondritic Nb/Ta ratios and demonstrates that diffusion of Nb in rutile is higher than that of Ta under identical P-T conditions. Rutiles Rt-1 and Rt-2a yield consistent 206Pb/238U ages of 426-423 Ma, which is similar to the 433 ± 3 Ma determined by ID-TIMS results of bulk rutile grains. This indicates that Ti-Nb-Ta must have been mobilized during the exhumation of deeply subducted continental crust. However, the diffusion-influenced rutile shows a large variation of ages compared to the rutile not associated with ilmenite, demonstrating that the back-diffusion may affect the U-Pb system in rutile. Therefore, when rutile is partially altered into ilmenite or titanite, its dating should be used with caution. Thus, this study demonstrates volume diffusion is a very important geological process to result in extreme HFSEs fractionation and age variation of rutile on the mineral scale. The rutile aggerates that occur in the felsic veins in 3-5m distance to the adjacent retrograde eclogite suggest that Ti-Nb-Ta-rich melts/fluids were transported over a distance of at least several meters and that rutile does not represent a residual phase of the Na-Si-Al-, F- and CH4-bearing fluid/melt environment that formed during anatexis of the subducted continental crust. The formation of rutile-rich aggregates during the generation, transport, and crystallization of subducted continental crust-derived melts/fluids in the deep roots of orogenic belts may be a critical trigger for the depletion of HFSEs in arc magmatic rocks during the formation of the continental crust.

Pervasive alteration of basaltic oceanic crust by heated seawater at greenschist facies conditions produces two contrasting hydrothermal rocks. ���Spilites���, consisting of chlorite + albite + quartz �� actinolite �� epidote, occur typically with regional extents. Locally spilites are metasomatically transformed to ���epidosites��� consisting of epidote + quartz + titanite + hematite or magnetite. Both alteration types have been proposed as markers of deep hydrothermal upflow in sub-seafloor convection cells, and as sources of the ore metals in basalt-hosted seafloor massive sulfide deposits. Little direct evidence is available for the chemical compositions of these fluids in their states deep in the upflow zones prior to their discharge at the seafloor. To better characterize them we have conducted a field, petrographic and fluid inclusion study of the lavas, sheeted dikes and plagiogranites in the Semail ophiolite, with supporting samples from the Troodos ophiolite. Our results show that both the spilite- and epidosite-forming fluids were single-phase aqueous liquids during the hydrothermal alteration. At some sites their salinity is 3.1���3.2 wt.% NaCleq, which we take to represent the chlorinity of Cenomanian seawater in the Semail realm. At other sites salinities are as low as 2.4 wt.% NaCleq or as high as 5.7 wt.% NaCleq, attributable to liquid���vapor separation and partial remixing deep in the crust along the dew curve of seawater, prior to ascent of the fluids to the sites of fluid inclusion trapping. Hypersaline brines, often accompanied by vapor, are restricted to plagiogranites in both the Semail and Troodos ophiolites and they represent magmatic���hydrothermal fluids that pre-date and are genetically unrelated to the spilite and epidosite alteration. The volcanostratigraphic locations of the samples constrain their maximum depths to 1470���3600 m below seafloor during alteration. The range of possible fluid trapping pressures for all samples is 31���68 MPa. Trapping temperatures vary between sites from 145 to 440 ��C for spilite fluids and 255 to 435 ��C for epidosite fluids. Quantitative analyses of 12 elements in individual fluid inclusions by LA-ICP-MS define the chemical characters of the two alteration fluids. The Br/Cl ratio in the spilite fluid is the same as in modern seawater and the other elements fit expectations from seawater���basalt experiments at elevated temperature. Accordingly, concentrations of Li, B, Na, Cl, K, Br and Sr in the spilite fluid match those in modern black-smoker vent fluids in basaltic crust. Exceptions are Ca and Fe, which are enriched in the spilite fluid. As these elements may precipitate below or at the seafloor prior to vent sampling, we conclude that the spilite fluids are plausible feeders of basalt-hosted black-smoker vents. The epidosite fluid has broadly similar elemental concentrations to the spilite fluid, but vastly lower Fe, reflecting the highly oxidized state of epidosites. This suggests that epidosite fluids are incapabable of forming basalt-hosted seafloor massive sulfide deposits.

The compositional record of accessory minerals can provide insights into the character and petrogenesis of the parental magma. We demonstrate apatite’s applicability to petrogenetic studies through in situ trace element analysis of apatite in 60 granitoid plutons from the eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). Rare earth element (REE) patterns of apatites usually mimic the trend of the host rock but are slightly enriched in MREE (middle REE), which is predominantly controlled by parental melt composition and REE partitioning. However, the REE patterns of apatites that are decoupled from those of host rocks, such as the depletions of LREE (light REE) and MREE, as well as the HREE (heavy REE) enrichment, result from the early crystallization of other REE-bearing minerals and late-stage metamorphism. Our data displays no significant relationship between apatite trace elements and highly fractionated granitoids in the eastern CAOB, highlighting the limitation of assessing the degree of magma differentiation through apatite geochemistry. More significantly, the variation of Sr in apatite shows a close correlation with the early crystallization of plagioclase, and the linear correlations of SrPl-SrWR, SrPl-SrAp, and SrAp-SrWR imply constant Sr partition coefficients of plagioclase and apatite. Furthermore, a partition coefficient of Sr between apatite and bulk rock is proposed ( D Apatite / b u l k r o c k Sr = 0.69 ). Our results also imply that apatite crystallizing from adakites inherits the typical trace element signatures of the adakitic melt and is characterized by high Sr, low HREY (Gd∼Lu+Y) contents and lack of Eu anomaly. In conclusion, apatite provides a vital bond to understand the petrogenesis of granitoids and shows the potential to track granitic sources in detrital grains.

Chromium isotope compositions have been determined for 42 mantle-derived xenoliths from Cameroon, France, Mongolia, Russia and the USA. The samples are mainly spinel and garnet lherzolites, or harzburgites, and yield δ53CrNIST979 from -0.33 to 0.43 ‰, within the range of previously reported compositions, -0.51 to 0.74 ‰ (Xia et al., 2017). Partial melting has been proposed as a process that alters the δ53Cr of the mantle residue. New non-modal melting models show that the compatible nature of Cr is inconsistent with large changes in the residue’s isotopic composition. The fractionation during melting is constrained by calculated Δ53Crmantle-melt-values

Sedimentary rocks and minerals formed during the final two-hundred million years of the Archean Eon (2.7 to 2.5 billion years ago, or Ga) are more depleted in 56Fe than at any other time in Earth’s past. Three hypotheses are proposed to explain these 56Fe depletions: (1) a very negative late-Archean seawater δ56Fe value, (2) “shuttling” of isotopically light Fe across the chemocline in redox-stratified settings, and (3) pyrite formation in an Fe(II)-rich ocean. Each of these scenarios has different implications for the initial oxidation of Earth’s surface, the climax of which – the Great Oxidation Event – immediately post-dates the appearance of these 56Fe depletions in the rock record. To help inform this debate, we measured the Fe isotope ratios of 120 shale and pyrite samples from Western Australia (Mt. McRae Shale and Jeerinah Formation) and South Africa (Klein Naute Formation) deposited between ∼2.65 Ga and ∼2.50 Ga. As in previous studies, we also find very strong sedimentary 56Fe depletions, to as low as δ56Fe = −2.06 ± 0.08‰ in bulk shales and δ56Fe = −2.31 ± 0.08‰ in pyrite. Some, but not all, of the severest 56Fe depletions appear alongside evidence of an Fe shuttle and local pyrite formation. These processes need not be mutually exclusive, and some combination of them likely played a partial, probably faciliatory role in driving some strong 56Fe depletions in our dataset. Most interestingly, and with little exception, the severest 56Fe depletions appear in samples deposited farther from shore under H2S-rich and anoxic (“euxinic”) conditions. We find it difficult to explain this connection without invoking the persistent presence of a very negative global seawater δ56Fe value during the latest Archean, one that was most consistently captured in sediments formed in distal euxinic settings. In order to impart this isotopic effect on seawater, the global seawater Fe(II) reservoir needed to have been partially oxidized during at least the final few hundreds of millions of years leading up to the Great Oxidation Event. Our new data add support to the idea that Earth’s initial oxidation was a long and protracted process rather than a rapid event.

At mid-ocean ridges (MORs), seawater carrying dissolved sulfate (SO4) infiltrates the oceanic crust. Hydrothermal fluid emissions from such systems have much lower δ34S and sulfur is mostly present as reduced sulfide, albeit in lower total sulfur concentrations than in seawater. This has been explained by anhydrite formation and sulfate reduction based on petrographic evidence and mass balance considerations. Here, we utilize the chemical and stable isotope (δ34S, δ18O) systematics in natural anhydrite and pyrite from various locations along the submarine and on-land section of the Mid-Atlantic ridge near Iceland to quantify the key variables that control anhydrite formation and sulfate recycling in the oceanic crust. Hydrothermal anhydrite exhibited δ34S values of +20.6 ± 1.0‰ and δ18O values between +2.4 to +25.3‰. Volcanogenic anhydrite in encrustations showed δ34S values of −1.7 to +21.4‰ and δ18O values between +1.4 and +38.0‰. Hydrothermal pyrite exhibited δ34S values ranging from +3.4 and +19.7‰. Comparison of the natural dataset with results from geochemical isotope modelling revealed that δ34S and δ18O values of anhydrite and pyrite were dependent on the isotope composition of the source fluid, extent of water–rock interaction, temperature, and redox conditions. Departures of δ34S and δ18O values in anhydrite from the source fluid were caused by progressive fluid-basalt interaction where lower δ34S and δ18O values reflected a change in sources of S and O from solely fluid to basaltic origin. The δ18O values of anhydrite were additionally affected by temperature. Quantitative formation of anhydrite mainly occurred at temperatures < 150 °C, whereas at elevated temperatures (>200 °C) reduction of seawater-sulfate to H2S and subsequent pyrite precipitation were found to limit anhydrite formation. Extending our calculations to the oceanic crust revealed that the majority of seawater-sulfate is sequestered into anhydrite (3–38 Tg S yr−1) in vicinity of MORs at < 200 °C at shallow depth (

The rapid retreat of the Dead Sea during the past four decades led to the exposure of unique structures of massive gypsum along the shores. Many of these structures (having the shape of mounds) are associated with the activity of Ein Qedem-type saline springs that currently discharge Ca-chloride brine to the lake. Field observations, radiocarbon dating of aragonite (within the gypsum mounds) that yield ancient ages, and the narrow range of δ34S and δ18O values ( δ 34 S gyp : 14.1–16.9‰; δ 18 O gyp : 14.4–16.5‰) indicates that the formation of the gypsum structures is related to the mixing of brines: the Dead Sea brine and ancient (last glacial) Ein Qedem type brine. These are Ca-chloride brines having different salinities and sulfur concentrations that satisfy conditions of an outsalting process whereby supersaturation of gypsum is attained by the mixing of these two brines in the offshore shallow water environment. Thermodynamic calculations (using the PHREEQC software) show that gypsum outsalting occurred when both brines were enriched with sulfate as compared to the present. The Ein-Qedem brine had higher sulfate when subjected to less intensive bacterial sulfate reduction. The Dead Sea was characterized by higher sulfate concentrations during intervals of low lake stands. The conditions of higher sulfate concentrations and enhanced discharge of the saline springs occurred repeatedly in the Dead Sea between ∼6.6 to 0.6 ka and were intermittent with periods of enhanced supply of sulfate to the lake by freshwaters.

Representative ‘Blue speckled’ (13–16th centuries) and ‘Brown speckled’ (13–21st centuries) wares recovered from the excavations in Qalhât or collected around Bahlâ city (Sultanate of Oman) were characterized by XRPD, SEM-EDS, Raman/optical microspectroscopy, and thermal expansion. Minerals present in the body (quartz, augite and albite as major phases, calcite, dolomite, rutile, anatase, phosphate, hematite and magnetite as minor phases) were identified by XRPD and/or Raman spectroscopy. SEM-EDXS microanalysis was performed on the glazes in order to compare their composition, especially the type of flux. The firing temperatures measured from the thermal expansion curves range between 1080 °C and 1150 °C. This preliminary study confirms that the first differentiation can be made by considering non-invasive Raman technique and thermal expansion measurement is sufficient to get an extensive comparison of the wares. A local place of production is likely for the body of all samples but importation of the glazes of ‘Blue speckled’ wares is questioned. Modern Bahlâ productions cannot be considered to have inherited the Qalhât ones. Ba-rich, cassiterite-opacified glaze corresponding to the Late Islamic Arabic Period appears as a new technology without a connection to the ancient one.

In ordinary chondrites (OCs), feldspar is present both in chondrules as a primary, igneous phase, and as a secondary phasethat results from crystallization of chondrule mesostasis glass during thermal metamorphism. To further understand thechemical and physical conditions prevailing during thermal metamorphism in OCs, we conducted a study of feldspar micro-textures and compositions within chondrules, focusing on alteration and equilibration features. We included OCs representingthe full metamorphic sequence (petrologic types 3–6) and all OC groups (H, L and LL). Our observations show that primarycalcic plagioclase alters to sodalite, scapolite, and nepheline in petrologic types 3.2–3.9, and to albite in types 3.6–5. Plagio-clase also develops alteration features such as zoning, micropores, and alteration lamellae in types 3–4. Sodic plagioclase ispresent in minor amounts as a primary phase, but also forms from the crystallization of chondrule mesostasis glass (types 3.2–3.9), and predominantly through albitization reactions in calcic plagioclase (types 3.6–5). K-feldspar occurs in albite in types3.6–6 as fine-scale exsolution lamellae and as larger patches.We combine these observations into an overall model of metasomatism during thermal metamorphism in OCs. Hydrousalteration during prograde metamorphism results in most of the alteration and equilibration features we observe in plagio-clase. During retrograde metamorphism, high temperature, short duration infiltration of anhydrous, alkali- and halogen-bearing fluids causes incorporation of K into plagioclase that subsequently exsolves. Overall, we show that evidence of meta-somatism is present throughout the metamorphic sequence in all the OCs, and thus was a ubiquitous process on all OC parentbodies. Recognition of the effects of fluid activity in OCs of even the lowest petrologic subtypes has important consequencesfor radioisotope chronometers, such as Al-Mg and I-Xe, that rely on the integrity of phases such as plagioclase and felds-pathic mesostasis glass which are highly susceptible to alteration. Furthermore, the presence of aqueous alteration featuresin OCs implies that the non-carbonaceous chondrite isotopic reservoir must have also had ices and that models of protoplan-etary disk evolution must also include the presence of ices in the inner solar system.

Assessing the water abundance and hydrogen isotopic signature (δD) of the Martian interior dictates our understanding of the formation of inner solar-system planets, the origin of their volatiles, Martian volcanic history, and the potential for life-bearing environments on the surface of the red planet. Although several Martian meteorites, representing the planet's crust, have been analyzed before for this assessment, little is known about the effect of shock on recorded hydrogen (H) in their mineral phases. Here, hydrogen contents and isotopes are measured by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) in an enriched olivine-phyric shergottite, Larkman Nunatak (LAR) 06319, containing impact-melted zones. Systematic 100 μm-long traverses in pyroxene and maskelynite grains reveal decreases of hundreds of µg/g H2O and increases in δD of thousands of ‰ towards the contact with impact-melted zones, which is interpreted as H diffusive loss during shock-melting. Diffusion modeling reveals that temperatures high enough to permit H diffusion following shock were maintained near the impact-melted zone for a few minutes. By comparison, the interior of pyroxenes > 200 μm away from impact-melted zones have some of the highest H content with 170-480 µg/g H2O and the lowest δD with ∼300 ‰. The latter values, obtained on the most Mg-rich, i.e. earliest crystallized pyroxenes, are used to estimate that the enriched shergottite mantle source contains 300-1000 µg/g H2O and has a δD of ∼300 ‰. This δD is similar to that of depleted shergottite and nakhlite mantle sources, but higher than Earth’s upper mantle, suggesting slightly different water source materials for the two planets. The enriched shergottite mantle source has ∼10 times more water than that inferred for the depleted shergottite source and for Earth’s upper mantle. The high water content and wide range of δD in olivine (from 90 µg/g H2O and 2700‰ to 1350 µg/g H2O and -14‰) is interpreted as overprinting by a combination of Martian and terrestrial surface alteration. Finally, the high δD recorded in the impact-melt produced glass (3350-4700 ‰), its moderate water content (100-230 µg/g H2O), and the presence of vesicles, are likely the result of incorporation of Martian surficial material (ice and atmospheric gases) and degassing during shock melting. This study shows that shock can induce H loss from minerals, accompanied by > 1000 ‰ δD increases. Additionally, although it confirms that the Martian mantle may be heterogeneous in its water content, it implies that the Martian mantle is homogeneous within uncertainties for δD.

This study focusses on bleaching phenomena on the pore scale in an Olenekian (Upper Buntsandstein) sandstone quarry. The study area exposes a 10 m thick red sandstone body with up to cm-sized, greyish-white laminae in sandstones. Analyses focus on bleached and unbleached zones in the same cm-sized samples. Bleached zones show a larger grain size (by 27 μm), less compaction and a higher porosity (by 3 %). They also exhibit stronger cementation by all observed authigenic phases of quartz, illite, K-feldspar and to a minor extent dolomite. Calculated intergranular volumes and cementational porosity loss also correlate positively with bleaching. Meanwhile unbleached zones contain more ductile grains (e.g. micas, detrital clay, rock fragments like phyllites and plutonic rock fragments) and are affected by major porosity loss via compaction. Bleaching is related to primary features like grain size-selective lamination and associated higher permeability in coarse-grained laminae. It is also reliant onto an early framework stabilising cement phase, which keeps pathways open for uplift-related leaching of the detritus and few dolomite cements.

In 40Ar/39Ar geochronology, excess Ar is 40Ar that does not derive from the in situ radioactive decay of 40K, or from the measurable input of atmospheric Ar, and results in increased daughter-parent ratios that correspond to anomalously old apparent dates without geological age significance. Excess 40Ar is commonly identified by a saddle-shaped 40Ar/39Ar degassing spectrum. However, biotite from the east Albany-Fraser Orogen of Western Australia contains excess 40Ar, but yields well-defined 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates, reproducible upon replicate analysis of biotite from the same sample. This “cryptic excess 40Ar” is inferred where plateau dates (1) are older than existing time constraints on cooling, such as U/Pb zircon ages for amphibolite to granulite facies metamorphism, and (2) vary between multiple samples from the same outcrop that have experienced the same thermal history. Rb/Sr geochronology is used to test the geologic significance of 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates, as the closure temperatures of both chronometers are similar, and the two chronometers are expected to yield similar cooling dates in an undisturbed system. Six Rb/Sr biotite-whole rock isochron ages from three outcrops yield a weighted mean age of 1133 ± 3 Ma (MSWD = 1.13, P = 0.34), and are interpreted to record post-orogenic cooling. 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates from the same samples are 31–394 Ma older, and in six of nine samples cannot be explained by simple monotonic cooling, by low-temperature biotite recrystallisation, or by alteration; instead, biotite contains cryptic excess 40Ar. Diffusion modelling of 40Ar/39Ar step-heating plateaus suggests that Ar, both excess and radiogenic, is homogeneously distributed within the crystal lattice, and was incorporated during biotite crystallisation. Biotite likely crystallised in a rock with a high partial pressure of Ar, possibly due to a high rate of radiogenic 40Ar generation in a K-rich lithology, together with a poorly-connected intergranular fluid network that inhibited Ar loss from the rock volume. This is supported by a homogeneous distribution of Ar at the cm scale, with reproducible biotite 40Ar/39Ar dates from each sample. Patchy fluid circulation during metamorphism led to the pervasive but heterogeneous distribution of excess 40Ar across outcrops. Due to the presence of the 40Ar/39Ar plateau, cryptic excess 40Ar is difficult to identify a priori, without comparison to additional geochronological constraints. Where cryptic excess 40Ar on a regional scale has been identified, such as in the eastern Biranup Zone of the Albany-Fraser Orogen, Rb/Sr geochronology may provide a more robust alternative to constrain the cooling path of rocks from high temperatures.

Authigenic carbonate samples were collected from the northern Okinawa Trough. Based on their carbon and oxygen isotopes, these samples were found to be methane-related carbonates precipitated by the anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM). Petrological analysis revealed numerous framboidal pyrites that had been partly oxidized. In order to trace the variation and diagenetic information of these framboidal pyrites, their diameters and geochemical components were studied using an electron probe. The results showed that their diameters varied from 4 µm to 17 µm (n = 60; geometric mean of 9.9 µm) and were of a normal distribution. The diameters of single pyrite that formed the framboidal pyrites varied from 1 µm to 2 µm. The framboidal pyrites with diameters of 6–10 µm accounted for ~80% of the total. The geometric mean of 9.9 µm indicates that they are probably diagenetic pyrites that were precipitated in a lower dysoxic environment (weakly oxygenated bottom waters). The S/Fe ratio of the framboidal minerals ranged from 0 to 1.67, and the pyrite content of single framboid varied between 0% and 86.4%. Therefore, numerous pyrites were oxygenated to iron oxides or oxyhydroxides, and were retained as pseudomorphism pyrites. The size of framboidal pyrites precipitated in cold seeps can be used to trace the redox environment; however, acquisition of additional data via investigation of different cold seeps is necessary to obtain more persuasive results.

Over 12 000 houses built in Ireland between 2002 and 2008 are estimated to have sustained structural damage due to swelling initiated by pyrite in crushed rock aggregate beneath floor slabs. The Irish Standard I.S. 398-1 presented a categorization protocol for sub-floor fill material suspected of causing pyritic expansion. While at the extremes, the current risk characterisation protocol is definitive, there is a broad range of conditions where the findings are inconclusive, and the risk assessment requires expert interpretation. In this study, the possibility of using trace-element analysis to better quantify risk from reactive pyrite has been explored. The form and amount of pyrite in sedimentary rock are determined by the depositional environment, which also determined the concentration of trace elements such as molybdenum (Mo) and uranium (U). In this study, a range of high- and low-risk aggregates has been analysed. The results show very good correlation between the empirically derived risk for pyrite expansion categories and molybdenum and uranium enrichments and the ratio between these concentrations. The results to date are very promising and suggest that further research and testing of more samples will help to confirm the basis of the analysis and establish numerical risk thresholds.

Trevor Evans was responsible for revealing the main physical processes which take place in natural diamond both in the upper mantle of the earth, where it is stabilized by high pressure and temperature, and as it is ejected by volcanic action to the surface. By measuring the activation energies required for graphitization, he clarified the reason for its very long life as a metastable crystal, valuable both as a gemstone and as an industrial abrasive. He learned how to make diamond specimens for examination in the transmission electron microscope, which enabled his discovery of dislocation loops and platelet precipitates in nitrogen-containing (type 1) stones. In a series of exacting laboratory experiments under geologically relevant conditions he pioneered the study of the emergence of nitrogen from solution to precipitation during the ejection process. In synthetic diamonds, using high-energy electron irradiation, he was able to reproduce the sequence of all the various types of nitrogen aggregation found in natural diamond. His work played a major role underpinning the characterization of gemstones, explaining many features of their colour. For many years he led diamond research in the UK, supported by De Beers. His work stimulated and has been confirmed by research in many other laboratories around the world.

40Ar/39Ar geochronology is one of the most important techniques for constraining the timing of basaltic events due to the paucity of suitable minerals in basalts for other geochronological techniques such as U–Pb (e.g., zircon, baddeleyite). Among a variety of materials from basaltic rocks that have been used for 40Ar/39Ar dating, plagioclase is the most important due to its common presence in basalts as a primary crystallizing phase, and its transparency so that fresh grains can be selected during sample preparation. However, plagioclase 40Ar/39Ar geochronology has often been compromised by alteration (e.g., sericitization by hydrothermal events), which, in practice, is difficult to identify using a petrographic microscope when the amount of alteration is low (e.g., We used laboratory step-heating experiments and theoretical simulations to characterize the 40Ar/39Ar age and Ca/K spectra of altered plagioclase so that 40Ar/39Ar dating results on altered samples can be identified and better interpreted. The step-heating experiments and theoretical simulations yielded consistent results, and show that with the presence of even a tiny amount of sericite (~0.01% for K-poor samples and ~0.1% for K-rich samples), the plagioclase samples yielded alteration plateau ages that are 3%–4% younger than the crystallization age. The difference between the alteration age of sericitized plagioclase and its crystallization age is primarily controlled by the time lapse between the crystallization and sericitization events, but also by the Ca/K ratios of the plagioclase. For plagioclase samples that experienced the same alteration event, the higher the Ca/K ratio is, the more sensitive the 40Ar/39Ar age is to alteration. We propose that the alteration signatures of plagioclase can be effectively identified through inspecting the 40Ar/39Ar age spectra, the Ca/K spectra, and the degassing curves. We also investigated the effect of sericitization of plagioclase microliths in basaltic groundmass and modelled the 40Ar/39Ar age and Ca/K spectra of altered groundmass samples. We validate our approach by revisiting published 40Ar/39Ar dating results for large igneous provinces, and showed that these dates should have been interpreted as alteration ages (minimum eruption ages) rather than crystallization ages. Finally, we demonstrate that with high degrees of alteration (~50% for K-poor and >70% for K-rich plagioclase samples), the age of hydrothermal alteration can be successfully dated.

Pyrite corona nodules from the ∼2.7 Ga Kapai Slate, a thin, sulfidic carbonaceous shale horizon interbedded with basaltic lava flows in the Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia, have concentric compositional and isotopic zoning with distinctive textural differences between cores and mantles. The sieved-textured cores are enriched in highly compatible trace elements, incl. Ni, As, Ag, Te, Sb, Bi and Pb, and depleted in incompatible Mo and Tl, whereas the radiating-textured mantles are strongly depleted in compatible elements and enriched in incompatible elements, relative to the cores. A striking feature of the data is that both the compatible and incompatible elements are linearly correlated, with correlation coefficients as high as 0.99. A marked drop in the concentration of compatible elements and an increase in incompatible elements at the core-mantle boundary is attributed to a sudden change in the rate of growth of the nodules produced by eruption of the voluminous overlying Paringa Basalt. The weight of the basalt produced sudden compaction of the unconsolidated clays below resulting in upward advection of pore fluid, which thinned the boundary layer around the growing nodules, leading to a marked increase in the rate of pyrite growth. Rapid pyrite growth led to a dramatic depletion in highly compatible elements, and to a build-up in incompatible elements, in the boundary layers around the growing nodule mantles, which resulted in extreme depletion of compatible elements, and enrichment in incompatible elements in the nodule mantles, relative to the cores. The corona nodules are also isotopically zoned with cores that have higher δ34S, with small positive Δ33S values, and mantles that have lower δ34S and higher Δ33S. The increase in Δ33S towards the rims is attributed to S8 being advected to the growing mantles by upward fluid movement during sudden compaction, and the decrease in δ34S to the lighter S isotope, with its higher reactivity and diffusivity, being preferentially incorporated into the fast growing pyrite mantle. The extreme changes in the growth rates of the Kapai Slate corona pyrite nodules provide a new constraint on the partition coefficients of the trace elements between Archean ocean water and sedimentary pyrite. The compatibility of the analysed trace elements decreases in the order Bi > Te > Sb > Ag > Cu > Pb > Ni ≈ As > (Co, Zn, Se, Cd, Mn, W) > Tl > Mo, which is consistent with the order obtained from modern sedimentary pyrites by Large et al. (2014), except for the redox-sensitive elements Mn, Tl and Mo. These differences are attributed to the lower oxygen content of the Archean atmosphere and oceans.

Jiaodong is the largest gold deposit concentration area in China. In recent years, great breakthroughs have been made in deep prospecting, and it has become the third largest concentration area of gold deposits in the world. A series of prospecting discoveries in the Jiaodong area provided the basic conditions for summarizing the regional metallogenic law, constructing the deposit model, carrying out research on the genesis of the deposit and innovating metallogenic theory. The Jiaodong gold deposits are mainly distributed in Northwest Jiaodong, Qi-Peng-Fu and Mu-Ru metallogenic regions, and mainly occur in Precambrian metamorphic rock series, Jurassic Linglong-type granite, Early Cretaceous Guojialing-type granite and Laiyang group. The orebodies are controlled by Sanshandao, Jiaojia, Zhaoping, Xilin-Douya, Jinniushan and other major ore-controlling fault zones. The main mineralization types include altered rock-type, quartz vein-type, stockwork type, sulfide quartz vein-type, interlayer detachment zone-type, altered conglomerate-type, basin margin fault breccia-type and pyrite carbonate vein-type and so on. The important progress of deep prospecting is summarized: two super giant deposits have been evaluated in the Sanshandao and Jiaojia areas; the amount of altered rock-type gold resources identified by deep prospecting has exceeded that of quartz vein-type gold deposits in the Linglong gold deposit field; the Hushan large scale gold deposit has been discovered in Qixia gold deposit field; and the Liaoshang large-size gold deposit is a new discovery of deep prospecting in Pengjiakuang gold deposit field. The ore-controlling faults of gold deposits have several changing steps with dip angle varying from steep to gentle along the dip angle. The gold ore bodies are mainly enriched in sections along the steep, gentle turning points and relatively gentle parts of the fault dip angle, forming a stepped distribution pattern. In the Early Cretaceous, the subduction and rollback of the Paleo-Pacific plate induced crust mantle interaction, resulting in large-scale magmatic and fluid activities. The crust tension and magma uplift form the dome extension structure of granite, which provides a channel for the migration of ore-forming fluid and also provides favorable space for the deposition of ore-forming fluid.

Magnetite-bearing granophyre and quartz dolerite are the evolved fractions of differentiated dolerite (diabase) sills and are an important host to Archean gold deposits because they are chemical traps for orogenic fluids. Despite their economic importance, there is a poor understanding of how melt composition, crystal fractionation, sill geometry, and depth of emplacement increase the volume of host rock that is most favorable for gold precipitation during orogenesis. We use drill core logging, whole-rock geochemistry, magnetic susceptibility, gold assay, and thermodynamic modeling data from 11 mineralized and unmineralized ca. 2.7 Ga differentiated dolerites in the Eastern Goldfields superterrane (Yilgarn craton, Western Australia) to better understand the influence of igneous and emplacement processes on gold prospectivity. Orogenic gold favors differentiated dolerites, derived from iron-rich parental magmas, that crystallize large volumes of magnetite-bearing quartz dolerite (>25% total thickness). Mineralized sills are commonly >150 m thick and hosted by thick and broadly coeval sedimentary sequences. Sill thickness is an important predictor for gold prospectivity, as it largely controls cooling rate and hence fractionation. The parental melts of gold-mineralized sills fractionated large amounts of clinopyroxene and plagioclase (possibly up to 50%) at depth before emplacement in the shallow crust. Recent research on dust emissions from eolian dunes seeks to improve regional and global emissions estimates and knowledge of dust sources, particularly with a changing climate. Dust emissions from dune fields can be more accurately estimated when considering the whole eolian system composed of active to stabilized dunes, interdunes, sand sheets, and playas. Each landform can emit different concentrations of dust depending on the supply of silt and clay, soil surface characteristics, and the degree to which the landforms are dynamic and interact. We used the Portable In Situ Wind Erosion Laboratory (PI-SWERL) to measure PM10 (particulate matter 300 t/km2/yr.

Haerdaban is a newly discovered Zn–Pb deposit (0.64 Mt at 6.19 wt% Zn and 1.09 wt% Pb) in the Western Tianshan, NW China. Sulfide mineralization mainly occurs as veins, breccias, and semi-massive ores within the dolomitic limestone and calcareous slate. Here we use Rb–Sr sphalerite and SHRIMP U–Pb zircon geochronology to place constraints on the age and formation of the deposit. Rb–Sr dating of sphalerite gives an isochron age of 432 ± 45 Ma (n = 6; 87Sr/86Sri = 0.7102 ± 0.0020), providing a direct age constraint for the main mineralization. SHRIMP U–Pb data for detrital zircon from three samples of host siliceous dolomite have relatively similar age modes with prominent age peaks at 1576 Ma, 1781 Ma, and 1848 Ma, and a smaller peak at 1375 Ma. The maximum depositional age for the host dolomite is constrained at 1099 ± 21 Ma by the weighted mean age of the four youngest detrital zircons. These results demonstrate that the main mineralization clearly postdates the host sedimentary rocks. Zircons from two diorite samples and one granite sample yield overlapping 206Pb/238U ages with a weighted mean of 394.5 ± 1.5 Ma. This age is slightly younger but within analytical uncertainty of the 432 ± 45 Ma for the ores, implying a possible temporal relationship between intrusions and main mineralization. The igneous intrusions could provide the heat to drive the hydrothermal system responsible for main-stage mineralization. Haerdaban is interpreted to be a metamorphosed SEDEX Zn–Pb deposit that has been remobilized by subsequent hydrothermal activity.

Eastern Qinling, China is one of the important rare metal metallogenic provinces with extensively distributed granite pegmatite dikes. The No. 5 granite pegmatite intruded into the granitic gneiss of the Qinling Group, and the major minerals are quartz (39.8%), K-feldspar (18.8%), albite (36.3%), muscovite (3.4%), and garnet (1.1%). Monazite U–Pb isotopic dating indicates that the No. 5 pegmatite from the Eastern Qinling was emplaced at ca. 420.2 ± 2.2 Ma, which confirms that high-purity quartz mineralization probably formed during the Early Devonian. In-situ laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis of quartz show that quartz samples from Eastern Qinling have total trace element concentrations (Al, Ti, Sc, Li, B, Cr, Mn, and Fe) ranging from 23.2 to 52.8 ppm, slightly higher than the quartz (impurity element content from 13.4 to 25.9 ppm) of the Spruce Pine high-purity quartz deposit in western North Carolina. The No. 5 pegmatite of Eastern Qinling could be defined as one high-purity quartz deposit of China.

Ooids (subspherical particles with a laminated cortex growing around a nucleus) are ubiquitous in the geological record since the Archean and have been widely studied for more than two centuries. However, various questions about them remain open, particularly about the role of microbial communities and organic matter in their formation and development. Although ooids typically occur rolling around in agitated waters, here, we describe for the first time aragonite ooids forming statically within microbial mats from hypersaline ponds of Kiritimati (Kiribati, central Pacific). Subspherical particles had been previously observed in these mats and classified as spherulites, but these particles grow around autochthonous micritic nuclei, and many of them have laminated cortices, with alternating radial fibrous laminae and micritic laminae. Thus, they are compatible with the definition of the term ‘ooid’ and are in fact very similar to many modern and fossil examples. Kiritimati ooids are more abundant and developed in some ponds and in some particular layers of the microbial mats, which leads to the discussion and interpretation of their formation processes as product of mat evolution, through a combination of organic and environmental factors. Radial fibrous laminae are formed during periods of increased supersaturation, either by metabolic or environmental processes. Micritic laminae are formed in closer association with the mat exopolymer (EPS) matrix, probably during periods of lower supersaturation and/or stronger EPS degradation. Therefore, this study represents a step forward in the understanding of ooid development as influenced by microbial communities, providing a useful analogue for explaining similar fossil ooids.

Late-stage metamorphic (ca. 2.64 Ga) and punctuated magmatic-hydrothermal mineralization models (2.67–2.64 Ga) are proposed for gold mineralization in the Kalgoorlie gold camp (~ 2300 t Au; Archean Yilgarn craton, Western Australia). We present structural, whole-rock geochemical, pyrite trace element, and multiple sulfur isotope data to evaluate these models. Both the Fimiston and Hidden Secret lodes were emplaced in ca. 2675 Ma D2b transtensional settings as releasing bends developed along the Golden Mile and Towns faults, respectively, and are related to the ingress of a H2O-CO2-Au-Te-As-S-K-Rb-Ba fluid concomitant with the intrusion of andesitic dikes. In the Hidden Secret orebody, this magmatic-hydrothermal fluid evolved from an early, As-enriched, greenstone-buffered fluid during the formation of disseminated pyrite mineralization (δ34Spyrite = 3.42 to 3.85‰; Δ33Spyrite = 0.25 to 0.43‰) to an Ag-Cu-Pb-Sb-Te-Tl-V-Zn–enriched fluid during the development of banded quartz-carbonate-sericite-pyrite veins (δ34Spyrite = - 10.74 to - 0.17‰; Δ33Spyrite = 0.06 to 0.19‰). Oroya gold-telluride lode mineralization formed during later, ca. 2660 Ma D2c transpression from a V-S–Au-Ag-Hg-Te–enriched magmatic-hydrothermal fluid represented by δ34Spyrite = - 11.56‰ to - 4.96 and Δ33Spyrite = 0.08 to 0.17‰. The Fimiston/Hidden Secret and Oroya mineralization events record oxidized magmatic-hydrothermal fluids represented by δ34Spyrite ≤ 0‰ and Δ33Spyrite ~ 0.0 to 0.2‰. These oxidized magmatic-hydrothermal fluids interacted with surrounding wall rock, which lowered fluid fO2 and buffered δ34Spyrite/Δ33Spyrite values to δ34Spyrite = ~ 1 to 5‰/Δ33Spyrite = ~ 0.2 to 0.7‰ in greenstone rock environments and to δ34Spyrite = ~ 1 to 5‰/Δ33Spyrite = ~ ≤ 0.3‰ and ≥ 0.7‰ in black shale environments. Anomalous Δ33S values in ore-stage sulfides formed locally due to the incorporation of sulfur during fluid-wall rock interaction. The early, magmatic-hydrothermal Fimiston/Hidden Secret and Oroya gold-telluride lodes differ texturally, geochemically, and mineralogically from the D3 Mt. Charlotte stockwork veins, which formed subsequent to ca. 2650 Ma and better adhere to a late-stage metamorphic devolatilization model.

Two groups of spinel crystals, holohedral and anhedral, were recognized at Kukhilal deposit. The latter are transparent raw crystals. It was found that anhedral transparent spinels formed due to reaction minerals (hydrotalcite and Mg chlorite) formation as envelopes between forsterite and spinel. These envelopes generated magals. They are viewed as bimetasomatic mineral associations produced in contacts of spinel and forsterite crystals. It was found that neogenic minerals (hydrotalcite, Mg chlorite, serpentine, brucite, etc.) preserved fragile spinel relics from Alpine orogenesis tectonic deformations due to their ductility. Transparent spinel was preserved in hydrotalcite-chlorite magal part. Magals are proposed to be regarded as jewelry spinel orebodies. Microprobe and X-ray structural analyses of spinel, forsterite, hydrotalcite, chlorite and serpentine are presented.
