Project management software packages are increasingly used by companies. These tools require a substantial financial investment, hence the importance of identifying the real contribution of project management software packages to the realization of projects. However, studies on the impacts of software packages on the performance of engineering project management are rare and mostly based on perceptions. The objective of this study is to investigate, from real project data, the level of utilization of a project management software package, developed by an engineering construction firm recognized internationally, and its link with project performance and project characteristics. Results stemming from non-parametric tests and correlation analyses show that the level of use of the software, and some of its subsystems, appears to be linked to project performance. Project duration also seems to be the most critical project characteristic.

State Transportation Agencies (STAs) recognized that to enhance the quality of construction documents, a review process must be incorporated into project planning, design, and procurement to evaluate projects for constructability. The benefits promised by constructability reviews (CRs) encouraged STAs to adopt it as part of their operations. This approach soon evolved into a structured process, recognized by researchers and practitioners as, the constructability review process (CRP). A significant component to the CRP success is to involve experienced construction personnel in CRs during the design phase; a major limitation of the traditional design-bid-build (DBB) delivery method. To overcome this limitation, more emphasis is being placed towards alternative project delivery methods (APDMs). As such, design–build (DB) and construction manager/general contractor (CM/GC) are among the APDMs most utilized by STAs to deliver transportation projects. Although extensive research has investigated CRs under DBB projects, research on CRs implementation under APDMs is remarkably absent. This study examines CRs utilization and staffing practices adopted by STAs across DBB, DB, and CM/GC projects. The results of this study were drawn utilizing data collected through a national survey questionnaire and interviews with selected STAs. The study found that CRs are initiated and implemented at proportionally similar phases across DBB, DB, and CM/GC projects. Investigation of staffing needs revealed that although the agency holds the executive role in implementation of CRs on DBB projects, their role shifts on DB projects to become more administrative. The agency continues to be involved in CRs under CM/GC projects, along with their allocated design consultant, in conjunction with the GC. The results of this study are anticipated to provide STAs with guidance for CRs utilization on DBB, DB and CM/GC projects.

Planning and scheduling is extremely important role in construction projects thank to the increasing difficulties during this field. Construction Planning is that the necessary warning to Scheduling and determining general sequence, defining labour tasks, construction methods and assigning responsibilities, inappropriate planning can cause major delays with the project work. For the planning and scheduling work requires huge amount of paperwork, which makes the management very burdensome. These problems may be solved employing a project management software which helps to grant a planned approach to planning. Nowadays use of project management (PM) software as a tool for managing and organizing work has gained its importance in construction industry and continues to grow at a faster pace in other industries also. During this study, attempt is made to check project management software such as MS project and Primavera and their feasibility is studied.

The research was conducted in a company who engaged in the Fintech field which is inseparable from project management activities. On its implementation there is a project completion time that exceed the specified schedule due to the limited number of human resources and also those bugs in the application generated in the project being run. This research has purposes to revealed the amount of impact from project planning to technical factors, team capabilities and project scopes also to find out the amount of impact which caused by technical factors, team capabilities and project scopes towards the performance of software development project. These research data were obtained through questionnaires that involving 63 respondents. The data analysis technique used PLS-SEM. The results from this research found that project planning had a positive and significant affect on technical factors by 60.1%, team capability by 45.5% while project scope by 57.3%. Technical factors, team capability and project scope had a positive and significant affect towards the performance of software development projects with each amount of influence, namely 39.3%, 25.6% and 31%, respectively.

PurposeThe paper aims to analyze the application areas of augmented reality (AR) in the construction industry to enhance its usage level. The objectives are to assess the level of awareness of hardware and software devices of AR, examine the application areas of AR and reveal lagging areas in the construction industry.Design/methodology/approachA survey of construction professionals engaged in the built environment was sent a well-structured questionnaire in the study area. The professionals involved are project managers, architects, engineers, builders and quantity surveyors. The sampling technique used in selecting those professionals was convenience sampling. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used in analyzing the retrieved data.FindingsThe five most applied areas of Augmented Realities are Visualization and simulation of construction works; Project documentation; Project planning, monitoring and modification. The other two areas include on-site real-time information retrieval and health and safety measures. The findings also revealed the difference in the opinions of professionals among the variables. The results showed that there is significant difference in the opinions of the professionals regarding the application areas except one, that is automated measurement. Automated measurement has the same converging opinions of all professionals engaged in the study.Originality/valueThe study gives deep insight into possible areas where AR can be used in construction. The awareness level of hardware and software devices of AR was revealed by showing that those devices are upcoming in their usage. The areas of application of AR in construction are in their nascent stage. When there is proper implementation of this technology it will improve management in construction, minimize health and safety issues, and enhance the efficiency of workers through visualization and simulation.

Project Risk management is known as an important workout for the achievement of desired objectives for the construction projects. Success in construction project is quantified by attaining its enactment in terms of project quality, project cost, project time, project safety. Construction projects in Pakistan, typically in the whole world have a high risk of being pointedly late and over budget. However, a bit of schedule and cost related risks are unavoidable in any construction project around the world. It was found out that the engineers were generally nominated earlier the design phase of any project. Due to this reason maximum projects did not get the advantage from SMEs at the planning stage of the project. This study also supports that project managers who are engineers be involved in construction projects site selection, in preliminary budget and schedule development by using good Engineering Management Practices.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the utilization of building information modelling (BIM) software for project planning in construction industries in Ondo-State. Approach/Methodology/Design: Three research questions guided the study. A survey research design was adopted for the study. The population for the study comprised of 31 construction industries with 126 Contractors and Building consultants in construction industries in Ondo-State, Nigeria. A structured questionnaire consisting of 41 items developed by the ERASMUS + programme was used for data collection. Two experts from the Department of Industrial Technical Education (Building/Woodwork), University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and one expert from Bablor Construction Company, Akure South, Ondo-State validated the instrument. The reliability co-efficient of the instrument was 0.86. Data collected were analyzed using mean to answer the research questions, while t-test was used to answer the hypotheses. Findings: It was found that the extent to which building information modelling (BIM) software are utilized are still very low. The study therefore, recommend that education and training programmes on BIM software uses should be organized for construction industries, BIM should be made compulsory for all personnel involved in construction process and a standard contract document should be made available by the government/professional bodies for all building constructors to ensure the usability of BIM for construction project to enhance the construction design, process, analyze and resolve potential hazards and ensure that the building project is completed timely. Practical Implications: The study revealed the benefit of BIM software application for project planning Hence, the importance of BIM software cannot be overemphasized in achieving high building quality, innovative virtual design and project management in the modern world. Originality/value: This paper shows that Building information modelling software is an innovative way to practically design and manage project plan. BIM adoption is needed to enhance building performance and operation.

Nowadays, leading world companies widely use methodology, standards, and project management tools in many areas of project-oriented activities, including investment, innovation, and information projects. Last years the implementation and functioning of the country’s enterprises’ project management system have been actively discussed in Kazakhstan.This work aims to identify critical processes of project management planning that affect the effectiveness of projects at the enterprise of the military-industrial complex of Kazakhstan. For this purpose, a survey of top managers of defense industry companies was conducted. A total of 28 respondents were interviewed, working at 18 enterprises of the military-industrial complex of the Republic of Kazakhstan and directly participating in the implementation of projects. Data were personally collected by a questionnaire survey conducted during 2019. To verify the formulated model’s assumptions and success, correlation analysis, and other relevant tests were used. Using the model of project management planning quality (PMPQ), process efficiency has been assessed, and critical factors for the effectiveness of defense industry projects have also been identified. The results show that the Republic of Kazakhstan’s defense industry complex projects has a low level of efficiency and an average score for the use of project planning processes. Project efficiency evaluation has also revealed critical knowledge areas for defense projects like human resource management, schedule development, and define scope. The research expands knowledge in PM, revealing the importance of planning processes for the defense industry that need more focus to achieve top-level success and effectiveness of projects. Alfredo Serpell Bley (Chile), tratando de actualizar y adaptar la información, así como tropicalizar, y ejemplificar a la realidad, que se vive en el sector construcción en Costa Rica. El Ingeniero Serpell indica que la planificación de operaciones: ''depende de los administradores de obra y tiene la influencia más directa sobre la productividad. El contexto del estudio de la planificación de operaciones estará dentro del marco de la planificación global del proyecto, por lo que permanentemente se destacarán las interrelaciones entre la una y la otra y, en especial, el hecho de que la planificación de operaciones es un subproducto de la planificación general del contrato o proyecto.” (1). En el ámbito de la construcción se entiende por operación a: la actividad de trabajo ya sea colocación o instalación de un elemento de construcción. Planning of construction operations of the book Construction Operations Administration of Alfredo Serpell Bley (Chile), updating and adapting the information, as well as tropicalizing, and exemplifying the reality that is lived in the construction sector in Costa Rica. Engineer Serpell focused on operations planning: ''depends on the construction managers and has the most direct influence on productivity. The context of the study of operations planning will be within the framework of the overall planning of the project interrelationships between one and the other will be highlighted permanently, and especially the fact that operations planning is a by-product of general contract or project planning. '' (1). In the context of construction, operation means that work activity that results in the placement or installation of a definable building element, Engineer Serpell mentions that a process is: ''a collection of tasks related to each other by a technological structure and a sequence. Finally, a task is the most basic work item in processes and operations.” (1).

The successful implementation of various computerized information systems has led to high data growth. Automation works well, but some of the desired reports are not achieved. This is because the data scattered in various systems have not been integrated. This paper discusses the design of data warehouse which is the result of integration and data abstraction from the Academic Information System (AIS) and other systems at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta campus that accommodates the need for data history and archiving to support reports in the academic field. These reports are used to fulfill the Higher education accreditation carried out by BAN-PT (Higher Education National Accreditation Agency) to assess the quality of university institutions and study programs in Indonesia. Therefore, the identification of information needs using the reference format of executive reports derived from the accreditation forms of study programs. The methodology in this study includes the project planning phase, defining needs, design, construction, deployment, and maintenance. In these stages, it starts from planning the data subject, designing the star schema, designing the data warehouse and then implementing it by means of Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) to form the cube using Pentaho Data Integration (PDI). The results of this study are academic fact tables that will be combined with fact tables from other standard forms as the basis for making an Academic Business Intelligent Application in University.

Purpose This paper aims to describe an innovative approach of integrating sustainability into the structures and processes of a business school without creating resistance. Design/methodology/approach A sustainable entrepreneurship competition was embedded as an independent programme in an already existing business plan competition at the School of Business FHNW. The paper shows, which structural elements of the competition had to be adapted to the needs of sustainable entrepreneurs. Findings The paper outlines aspects that need to be considered and steps that need to be taken to run a sustainable entrepreneurship competition supporting as many high-quality projects as possible. It describes the importance of developing an independent instrument that meets the specific needs of sustainable entrepreneurs in project planning. The sustainable innovation plan is explained. Social implications The student projects are developed at the School of Business FHNW as part of the entrepreneurship competition, which has been successfully carried out twice. They have numerous measurable positive social and ecological effects, which are described by the students in their sustainable innovation plans and are subsequently reflected in the realization of the projects. Originality/value Using the example of the Swiss Student Sustainability Challenge, the paper demonstrates under which conditions a sustainability project can be successfully integrated into the existing structures of an institution of higher education and develop into a beacon project of the university. Other universities can make use of these findings to launch comparable projects at their institutions.

With the emergence of industry 4.0, the oil and gas (O&G) industry is now considering a range of digital technologies to enhance productivity, efficiency, and safety of their operations while minimizing capital and operating costs, health and environment risks, and variability in the O&G project life cycles. The deployment of emerging technologies allows O&G companies to construct digital twins (DT) of their assets. Considering DT adoption, the O&G industry is still at an early stage with implementations limited to isolated and selective applications instead of industry-wide implementation, limiting the benefits from DT implementation. To gain the full potential of DT and related technological adoption, a comprehensive understanding of DT technology, the current status of O&G-related DT research activities, and the opportunities and challenges associated with the deployment of DT in the O&G industry are of paramount importance. In order to develop this understanding, this paper presents a literature review of DT within the context of the O&G industry. The paper follows a systematic approach to select articles for the literature review. First, a keywords-based publication search was performed on the scientific databases such as Elsevier, IEEE Xplore, OnePetro, Scopus, and Springer. The filtered articles were then analyzed using online text analytic software (Voyant Tools) followed by a manual review of the abstract, introduction and conclusion sections to select the most relevant articles for our study. These articles and the industrial publications cited by them were thoroughly reviewed to present a comprehensive overview of DT technology and to identify current research status, opportunities and challenges of DT deployment in the O&G industry. From this literature review, it was found that asset integrity monitoring, project planning, and life cycle management are the key application areas of digital twin in the O&G industry while cyber security, lack of standardization, and uncertainty in scope and focus are the key challenges of DT deployment in the O&G industry. When considering the geographical distribution for the DT related research in the O&G industry, the United States (US) is the leading country, followed by Norway, United Kingdom (UK), Canada, China, Italy, Netherland, Brazil, Germany, and Saudi Arabia. The overall publication rate was less than ten articles (approximately) per year until 2017, and a significant increase occurred in 2018 and 2019. The number of journal publications was noticeably lower than the number of conference publications, and the majority of the publications presented theoretical concepts rather than the industrial implementations. Both these observations suggest that the DT implementation in the O&G industry is still at an early stage.

The term advanced work packaging (AWP), coined by the Construction Industry Institute (CII), refers to a disciplined process for project planning and execution; it was developed to address challenges such as cost and schedule overruns in the industrial construction sector. Case studies conducted on AWP report a number of benefits in the areas of productivity, cost, safety, and schedule. However, since there is no clear method to assess the costs and benefits of AWP implementation, a significant challenge in AWP adoption is the lack of quantitative evidence to support these reported benefits. This paper presents a structured framework to assess multiple aspects of AWP implementation, which will enable the quantification of both its costs and benefits. The framework will enable the future comparison of AWP and non-AWP projects. This paper contributes to the industrial construction sector by providing a framework to assess AWP implementation in practice.

The planning process in project work is very important to maintain the quality of results and management of work time. In this study, the authors make a web-based information system application and based on work experience while working at PT.Telkom Akses as administrative staff who handles projects or work related to the construction of the FTTH network by PT.Telkom Indonesia. This information system aims to simplify the work in project planning, especially in making BoQ more accurate and more efficient. The method used by the author is the Lyfe Cycle software development method that uses the waterfall model. This paper addresses the integrated processes of planning and scheduling of projects using technologies advanced tools as means for managing change in the era of the 4IR. The paper explores the traditional project management planning and scheduling tools in conjunction with what technology has to offer, to bridge the gap between the traditional project management planning and scheduling tools and what the modern-day business market demands. An analysis of literature covering a wide range of theoretic and empirical studies was performed. The theories underlying various planning and scheduling methods were analysed in relation to the design of projects. A descriptive quantitative secondary data was used as a tool to assess the impact of technology on project planning for scheduling. The analysis of the study’s data was conducted using the principles of cross - tabulation. Inferences were drawn on the significant impact of the use of advanced technological tools on project planning for scheduling in current business time. Organisations can make use of the findings of this study to correctly apply the available advanced technological tools for more efficient schedule management planning to enhance the successful delivery of their projects. Further, this research can be used to provide learning opportunities for new and inexperienced planners and schedulers, and as a basis for further research in this field of knowledge.

Project Management in India has been one of the most under rated aspect of a construction project. Until recently, it has been observed as more of a burden than being a powerful tool to complete the project efficiently and in a timely manner. Some of the major contributors in the above are adhering to multiple formats, extensive record keeping, processing Project Management data into Project Management information, analyzing the outcomes and implementing improvements at site, etc. However, with rapid globalization, Project Management techniques have been adopted in various construction projects across the country and proved to be highly efficient in completing complex projects in a time bound manner with optimum results and desired quality. The construction and commissioning of complex commercial buildings like Hospitals mandate the implementation of Project Management processes, more so in Indian market scenario. There is a huge scope for improvement in a construction project by following the PM processes from the inception of the project. The author is currently working as the Planning &Co-ordination Head for the construction of India’s largest Medical Campus. An attempt is made by the author to amalgamate Project Management practices with real-time construction and commissioning of a fully air conditioned hospital in India.

Formal Methods for the Informal Engineer (FMIE) was a workshop held at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard in 2021 to explore the potential role of verified software in the biomedical software ecosystem. The motivation for organizing FMIE was the recognition that the life sciences and medicine are undergoing a transition from being passive consumers of software and AI/ML technologies to fundamental drivers of new platforms, including those which will need to be mission and safety-critical. [EN] Classical scheduling techniques are commonly employed tools in civil engineering schools worldwide for teaching project planning and management. Techniques such as the Critical Path Method (CPM), Precedence diagram method (PDM), Gantt chart or the Program Evaluation and Review Technique (PERT) present the advantage of their simplicity, ease of understanding and that they are implemented in the most accepted project management software such as Ms Project or Primavera P6. These scheduling techniques, however, present important limitations in dealing with the uncertainty inherent to construction project management. On the one hand, the deterministic approach of CPM to project planning learning reduces sensitivity and understanding of the factors that significantly alter and challenge the success of a project, while on the other hand PERT shows too limited capabilities in uncertainty modelling and underestimates the project duration standard deviation. Schedule Risk Analysis (SRA) is a stochastic method that has been pointed out to promote that students start managing projects more effectively and more efficiently. In this study, we employ an educational SRA software (ESRA) to help students understand the underlying assumption of stochastic scheduling, as well as to make explicit the advantages of stochastic scheduling compared to classical methods such as CPM or PERT. ESRA affords modelling both the uncertainty in the duration of activities, and the relationship between these uncertainties, expanding the range of planning problems, which students can now assess. This research was implemented in four stages through a workshop. First, we introduced the theoretical foundations of Monte Carlo Simulation, the method underlying most uncertainty assessment methods. Second students employed ESRA to see how this method works. Third, students worked around a case-study of the construction projects management and analysed the results, comparing those from the stochastic assessment with those of the deterministic assessment. Finally, they were asked to respond a questionnaire in which they had to address real-world decision-making regarding project scheduling that required having project uncertainties into account.

Project planning is a critical event for overall success of a project. Project planning in business technology projects is a multidisciplinary activity. Many times, project planning overlooks interdependencies and fails to utilize the historical knowledge and best practices, resulting in re-work. To address this gap, an AI expert system was designed that can facilitate flawless intake and planning. This system ensures work “starts right” by enforcing the entry criteria and allows tailoring of the project plan based on project type and complexity. This technology system is built using a rules-based design engine and optimized search algorithm that covers multiple domains like software engineering, regulations and risk management, and computer system validation. This system aligns very closely with the software development best practices of industry standards such as CMMi and GAMP. This system also seamlessly interfaces with project management systems to enable stage gate reviews and track project outcomes at the later stages of execution and project close out.

In the age of Large Programs and Big Data a key component in project planning for ground-based astronomical observatories is understanding how to balance users demands and telescope capabilities. In particular, future planning for operations requires us to asses the impact of a complex set of parameters, such as right ascension, instrument, and sky condition pressures over coming semesters. Increased understanding of these parameters can provide: improved scientific output, better management of user expectations, more accurate advertised/allocated time under a Call for Proposals, and improved scheduling for instrumental commissioning and engineering work. This Work in Progress-Research to practice paper introduces the development of a Project Based Learning course on Analog Circuits. This is a six-credit course of fourteen weeks duration, designed for undergraduate students of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. This paper presents the course structure, project planning and feedback from students. The experience gained by designing and implementing this course will be used to develop improved courses for higher semesters for this batch of students. The overall objective is to help students to design Analog Circuits using discrete electronic components and simple integrated circuits and sensitize them on sustainability goals like power saving by using low power and low-cost components, optimized designs, standard practices and solutions that are useful for society. The Goals, Activities, Products and Assessment (GAPA) for the course are interlinked and logistics planning has been done before the commencement of the semester. The curriculum has been developed to cover the concepts required for developing sustainable products, and the topics discussed involve low power amplifiers, oscillators, wave shaping circuits and filters. The students registered for this course have experienced PBL in their previous semesters and have successfully completed a prerequisite course named Fundamentals of Automation Engineering. They are skilled on using the electronic test and measurement equipment, designing Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) and soldering of electronic components on the boards. Although they are granted autonomy in selecting components and circuit design, project goals are identified by the instructor and evaluation weightage assigned consciously to these goals. Activities are conducted during sessions to help students learn the concepts required for the gradually developing the project. Feedback is required from the students to compare the planned goals versus achieved goals and is analyzed for pluses and deltas. It is also used to monitor the motivation of students, to make the course more interesting for intrinsic learning.

Inefficient project planning and control have been identified as the main contributor to the reduced performance of the construction industry in Iran. Meanwhile, improper use of planning and control software packages (PPCSPs) in these projects can be a key factor in this reduced performance. This study investigates different aspects of the PPCSP applications to draw the role of PPCSPs in the planning and control processes of construction projects in the country using a survey-based method. It is found that only 32.5% of the construction companies in Iran highly or very highly use PPCSPs. The low level of skill and the lack of management support are two main contributing factors to this reduced PPCSP application. The quality of the academic and vocational project management training programs and the lack of dependable PPCSP technical support are argued as possible sources of the issue. The identified PPCSP pattern in Iran is compared with the results reported for several developed and in-transition countries. This comparison reveals that Iran and in-transition countries fall deeply behind in employing PPCSPs in their construction projects compared to the developed countries.

Having professional project management support has proven essential to the success and effectiveness of the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) project. The value and level of investment needed for project management support in a large, complex, and highly distributed project should not be overlooked by others seeking to establish a distributed organization of this nature. This paper shares what the XSEDE Project Management & Reporting (PM&R) team believes are best practices for project management in a large, virtual organization such as XSEDE. The paper does not compare XSEDE project management with similar functions in other distributed projects. However, it shares numerous management challenges experienced in XSEDE and how the PM&R team adopted and modified processes to overcome them. Lessons learned presented here include effective application of numerous project management functions in a distributed environment such as change management, project planning, project reporting, risk management, internal communications, and metric management.

The article outlines many challenges that are present because of the demanding requirements of data centers both in design and management and then introduces the opportunities that recent technological advances have made possible. We present several new approaches of ownership and responsibilities that directly affect the financial viability of data centers.

To provide internet network, one of public Telecommunication provider in Indonesia conduct several project related to fiber optic cable installation such as the STO Modernization Feeder project. In every project implementation, the company is concerned with quality in order to remain competitive with competitors. Deliverable which meets the project quality will produce the product in accordance with the requirements. STO Garut Feeder Modernization Project was experiencing delays which is caused by the non-conformity project deliverable to project specification during monitoring & controlling phase. At project planning, the quality metric was not designed, which can be used as a guideline for vendor in carrying out the project task and to assist the process of quality control. Quality metric design is carried out using internal control methods that can identify possible errors in each project activity and critical success criteria that define a successful activity that will be performed. Result shows that only 67.1% statement (critical success criteria) form critical activity is implemented. This result can answer why the project delay because the activity on critical path is mostly re-worked due to non-conformity issues.
