- Abstract
This book is the first monograph focusing on ellipsoidal heads, which are commonly used as an end closure of pressure vessels in chemical, petroleum, nuclear, marine, aerospace and food processing industries. It provides a comprehensive coverage of stress, failure, design and fabrication of ellipsoidal heads. This book investigates in detail buckling/plastic collapse behaviors of ellipsoidal heads using nonlinear finite element methods and experiments. Buckling/plastic collapse experiments are performed on 37 ellipsoidal heads which cover various geometric parameters, material and fabrication methods. In particular, modern measurement technologies, such as 3D laser scanning, are used in the experiments of these ellipsoidal heads including large heads with a diameter up to 5 metres. Moreover, this book presents new formulas for accurate prediction of buckling/plastic collapse pressures of ellipsoidal heads. Using elastic-plastic theory, this book proposes a new failure mechanism-based method for design of ellipsoidal heads. Compared to other methods in current codes and standards based on elastic or perfectly plastic theory, the new design method can fully develop the head's load-carrying capacity, which reduces head thickness and thus cost. Also, this book studies control on fabrication quality of ellipsoidal heads, including shape deviation, forming strain and forming temperature. It is useful as a technical reference for researchers and engineers in the fields of engineering mechanics, engineering design, manufacturing engineering and industrial engineering.

At present, any industry that wanted to be considered a vanguard must be willing to improve itself, developing innovative techniques to generate a competitive advantage against its direct competitors. Hence, many methods are employed to optimize production processes, such as Lot Streaming, which consists of partitioning the productive lots into overlapping small batches to reduce the overall operating times known as Makespan, reducing the delivery time to the final customer. This work proposes carrying out a systematic review following the PRISMA methodology to the existing literature in indexed databases that demonstrates the application of Lot Streaming in the different production systems, giving the scientific community a strong consultation tool, useful to validate the different important elements in the definition of the Makespan reduction objectives and their applicability in the industry. Two hundred papers were identified on the subject of this study. After applying a group of eligibility criteria, 63 articles were analyzed, concluding that Lot Streaming can be applied in different types of industrial processes, always keeping the main objective of reducing Makespan, becoming an excellent improvement tool, thanks to the use of different optimization algorithms, attached to the reality of each industry. This work was supported by the Universidad Tecnica de Ambato (UTA) and their Research and Development Department (DIDE) under project CONIN-P-256-2019, and SENESCYT by grants “Convocatoria Abierta 2011” and “Convocatoria Abierta 2013”.

- Abstract

In certain domains of production engineering we are faced with very small batch production as it is the case in the production of heavy hydro energy equipment. In this domain manual welding is one of the most time consuming operations. Monitoring of the welding process is essential from the point of work organization as well as from the point of process control. In this paper a novel concept of data acquisition and recording of welding parameters to the welding diary is presented. Several considerations on signal acquisition, sampling rate, processing, data aggregation, wireless information transfer, and presentation are discussed. Implementation of the concept is discussed on laboratory and industrial examples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent research, undertaken using participative observation methods within the Leonardo Da Vinci project ‘Open-Dynamic-Design’, provides evidence that EU industrial practice continues to value the flexibility of physical models across a range of disciplines. This research is placed within the philosophical educational framework established by Schon and examples of implementation within the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering disciplines at the University of Glasgow are discussed. It is argued that physical models support the concurrent optimisation of design and manufacturing processes and that they represent a continuing generic tool to support engineering design education. With the continuous improvement of computational performance, vehicle structural design has been addressed using computational methods, resulting in more efficient development of new vehicles. Most simulation-based optimization approaches generate deterministic optimal designs without considering variability effects in modeling, simulation, and/or manufacturing. One of the main reasons for this omission is due to the fact that the computing time of a single crash analysis for vehicle structural design still requires significant computing time using a state-of-the-art computer. This calls for the development and implementation of an efficient optimization under uncertainty method. In this paper, a new integrated stochastic optimization method, which combines the advantages of metamodeling techniques and Better Optimization of Nonlinear Uncertain Systems (BONUS), is developed for vehicle side impact design. Nonlinear metamodels are built by using a stepwise regression method to replace the expensive computational model and BONUS is employed to obtain optimal designs under uncertainty. A benchmark problem for vehicle safety design is used to demonstrate the method. The main goal of this case study is to maintain or enhance the vehicle side impact test performance while minimizing the vehicle weight under various uncertainties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In today's competitive global manufacturing industries, standard components play an important role in the commercial success of any product or machine system. The consideration of standard components during the early stages of the new product introduction process is therefore particularly important. However, the ability of the designer to explore different configurations and combinations of standard components is severely frustrated by the analytically intensive and time-consuming aspects of not only embodying a concept but also dealing with standard components and their associated mechanisms for design and selection. This paper presents the application of an integrated modelling environment for the computer-based embodiment of a machine system. The role of such an approach in the design process is discussed and the elements of the modelling environment are summarized. The processes of constructing and embodying a machine system are described and an industrial case study is presented. This case study is used to demonstrate the capabilities and potential of the new approach for supporting the embodiment and evaluation of alternative system configurations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores a concept borrowed from psychology that gives new perspectives on product development. According to the article, the functional approach is a particularly good fit for the design of traditional mechanical components. It recommends decomposing a problem down to a level in which individual components can be specified to embody individual functions. The article provides examples that illuminate a problem of description for the function approach. It notes that the problem stems from the shift in engineering design from the component level to the system level.

In real-world applications, a nominal model is usually used to approximate the practical system for design and control. This approximation may make the traditional robust design less effective because the model uncertainty still affects the system performance. In this paper, a novel robust design approach is proposed to improve the system robustness to the variations in design variables as well as the model uncertainty. The proposed robust design consists of two separate optimizations. One is to minimize the variation effects of the design variables to the performance based on the nominal model just as what the traditional deterministic robust design methods do. The other is to minimize the effect of the model uncertainty using the matrix perturbation theory. Through solving a multi-objective optimization problem, the proposed design can improve the system robustness to the uncertainty. Simulation examples have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed design method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
