Digital technologies open new possibilities for 2D and 3D images. Ultra high definition, wide color gamut, high dynamic range, and high frame rate are new areas of research with the aim to expand the capabilities of film, television, and audiovisual presentations. Binocle has long been interested in these topics, as they can provide solutions to problems in stereoscopy. The latter will gain widespread use only with the advent of digital technologies, and will be able to flourish when it becomes as satisfactory for its critics as was silver film in its day. We conducted tests in all these areas. The experiments reported in this chapter are mainly focused on high dynamic range, even though we know that all these developments will be embedded in new tools, new practices, and most likely new standards.
