Shearing of fractures and faults is important because it can result in permeability change or even induce seismicity—both are keys for efficient and safe energy recovery and storage in Earth systems. Quantitative analysis of shearing of intersecting fractures and faults is challenging because it can involve dynamic frictional contacts that are complicated by deformation of the rock matrix. To predict the shearing of intersecting fractures/faults, we attempt to answer the question of how intersections impact the shearing of a fracture network and whether we can simplify the description as compared to classical discrete fracture network (DFN) models. To answer these questions, we conducted a series of numerical simulations on scenarios for variable numbers of intersecting fractures. All these examples yield consistent results: the results of using DFNs are consistent with those of using hypothetical major paths. This leads to a new model, which we name simplified discrete fracture network model, to analyze shearing of intersecting fractures/faults using major path(s). We found that the intersections of fractures do not fundamentally change the shearing of two intersecting fractures if the intersecting angles are small. Furthermore, increasing the number of fractures/faults may relax the stress as more fractures/faults become available for shearing and distributing the stress. The simplified DFN model, which can capture efficiently the shearing behavior of each major paths from a large number of intersecting fractures/faults, will be a promising conceptual model that is complementary to existing equivalent continuum and discrete fracture models to analyze shearing of intersecting fractures/faults.

This research paper focuses on the thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) modeling of brine migration in a heated borehole test conducted as part of the ongoing Brine Availability Test in Salt (BATS) at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in New Mexico. It is a component of the international collaboration project DECOVALEX-2023 (DEvelopment of COupled models and their VALidation against EXperiments), which aims to understand the THM processes governing brine flow in heated rock salt repositories through collaborative analysis by multiple research teams. Using the TOUGH–FLAC simulator, THM simulations were performed and compared with data from the BATS phase 1a. This experiment involved two identical horizontal-borehole arrays, one heated and one serving as a control, both equipped with sensor arrays. Analysis of measurements revealed water flow rate surges during heater power transitions, with the highest jump observed during cooling. Acoustic emission activity exhibited distinct patterns in response to heater power changes, suggesting that damage to rock salt is particularly pronounced during the cooling phase. The THM simulations successfully captured these phenomena, highlighting the significance of thermal effects, brine migration, and mechanical behavior in predicting brine availability in heated and damaged rock salt. Our modeling also revealed the critical interplay between heating and cooling-induced damage and its influence on flow properties, particularly affecting brine inflow estimation. Notably, we found that cooling-induced brine inflow spikes result from increased permeability due to tensile dilatancy. These findings have important implications for the development of robust containment strategies and enhance our understanding of the complex processes involved in repository performance.

We present a new pore-scale model for multicomponent advective-diffusive transport with coupled mineral dissolution and precipitation. Both dissolution and precipitation are captured simultaneously by introducing a phase transformation vector field representing the direction and magnitude of the overall phase change. An effective viscosity model is adopted in simulating fluid flow during mineral dissolution-precipitation that can accurately capture the velocity field without introducing any empirical parameters. The proposed approach is validated against analytical solutions and interface tracking simulations in simplified structures. After validation, the proposed approach is employed in modeling realistic rocks where mineral dissolution and precipitation are dominant at different locations. We have identified three regimes for mineral dissolution-precipitation coupling: (a) compact dissolution-precipitation where dissolution is dominant near the inlet and precipitation is dominant near the outlet, (b) wormhole dissolution with clustered precipitation where dissolution generates wormholes in the main flow paths and precipitation clogs the secondary flow paths, and (c) dissolution dominant where all solid grains are gradually dissolved. In the three regimes, the proposed approach provides reliable porosity-permeability relationships that cannot be described well by traditional macroscale models. We find that the permeability can increase while the overall porosity decreases when the main flow paths are expanded by dissolution and adjacent pore spaces are clogged by precipitation.

Residual trapping is an important process that affects the efficiency of cyclic storage and withdrawal and in-situ production of hydrogen in geological media. In this study, we have conducted pore-scale modeling to investigate the effects of pore geometry and injection rate on the occurrence and efficiency of residual trapping via dead-end bypassing. We begin our theoretical and numerical analyses using a single rectangular pore to understand the key controls in bypassing. We further investigated two factors affecting bypassing: (a) a continuous cycle of injection-extraction of H2, and (b) variable pore geometry. Based on our pore-scale simulations, we found that: (a) a higher pore height/width ratio (h/w) and a higher injection rate cause more residual trapping, which is unfavorable for withdrawal of H2; (b) the trapping percentage increases with the h/w first and then decreases after h/w reaches 0.5; (c) and a converging-shaped pore can result in less trapping volume. Based on a theoretical comparison of the residual trapping behavior of H2 and CO2, we discuss the mechanisms that are applicable to CO2 residual trapping and the possibility of developing engineering controls of H2 storage and production.

Pressure solution, a mechanism that involves tight coupling between the geometry and thermal-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) processes, plays an important role in diagenesis. In this study, we make the first attempt to conduct microscale THMC modeling to understand and quantify the impacts of geometry and temperature on pressure solution, taking natural salt rock as an example. This modeling capability is achieved by expanding a novel MC code that we developed previously (Hu et al. J Geophys Res: Solid Earth 126:e2021JB023112, 2021) to include temperature effects. We first conduct a simulation of an example that involves a single brine inclusion within a single halite grain and find that the temperature impact is limited for that case. We then extract geometry from an image of a natural salt rock and conduct simulations with different cases: (A) only temperature and no stress, (B) only stress and no temperature, and (C) with both stress and temperature. These different cases result in quite different phenomena. In case A, dissolution and precipitation occur across the entire system due to isolated pore space reaching a localized mass balance between dissolution, precipitation, and diffusion. In case B, intense geometric features (e.g., major asperities, inclusions) in one area undergo stress concentration, thus dominating pressure solution in that area. In case C, pressure solution is spread out at contacting highly stressed geometric features close to the hotter side. We conclude that geometric features dominate stress distribution, thus dominating pressure solution in a natural salt rock that may be affected by the temperature if a sufficient temperature gradient is applied.

Salt formations are a promising host rock for the disposal of heat-emitting nuclear waste due to their ability to heal fractures, high thermal conductivity, and near-zero permeability. This study investigates the concept of waste emplacement in salt formations by placing waste packages in drifts and backfilling them with crushed salt. The aim is to minimize fracturing and restore the initial properties of the host rock. One of the key issues in assessing the safety and performance of nuclear waste repositories in salt is determining the reconsolidation rate of the crushed salt backfill, which has been traditionally predicted using the C-WIPP model. However, this model was calibrated using data from uniaxial oedometer lab tests, where specimens with high initial porosity values have been compacted to medium porosity values. The observed compaction behavior has then been extrapolated to the low porosity range, leading to a prediction of rapid full reconsolidation of the backfill in less than 20 years. In contrast, the new C-WIPP/TUC model used in this study was calibrated for the medium porosity range, between 17% and 8%, based on more suitable triaxial lab tests. Using coupled Thermo-Hydro-Mechanical (THM) simulations with the TOUGH-FLAC simulator, it was found that the C-WIPP/TUC model predicts a slower reconsolidation rate of the backfill compared to the C-WIPP model, with an average porosity of the backfill remaining roughly 10 times that of natural salt after 10,000 years. The effects of the relatively slow reconsolidation of the crushed salt backfill on the THM behavior of the repository are also examined, highlighting the importance of accurately capturing the behavior of crushed salt for the study of the long-term integrity of a nuclear waste repository in salt.

Rock salt has a self-sealing capacity, low permeability, and high thermal conductivity, making it a potential host for heat-generating nuclear waste. The feasibility of nuclear waste disposal within salt formations has been investigated mostly for small-sized canisters. Geologic disposal of larger-sized canisters originally designed for spent fuel storage and transportation has lately been examined as a cost-effective alternative. This raises questions about their long-term vertical movement due to their weight and high decay heat. Low-stress creep governs this movement; however, most salt constitutive models do not incorporate it. In this paper, the Norton and the WIPP creep models are compared with the Lux/Wolters/Lerche (LWL) model and a simpler model that combines linear and Norton creep laws (named combined creep model). The LWL and combined creep models consider pressure solution creep, though all incorporate dislocation creep. The models are first applied to creep tests under various stress levels. The LWL and the combined creep models results fit the experimental data well in both high and low stress ranges, whereas the Norton and WIPP models results only fit in higher-stress ranges. The different models are further applied for analyzing long-term canister movement. A sinking rate of - 4.4 × 10 - 7 mm/year was predicted using the Norton and WIPP models versus - 2.1 × 10 - 2 mm/year and - 3.1 × 10 - 2 mm/year using the LWL and the combined creep models, respectively. This comparative study confirms that creep models calibrated exclusively against high-deviatoric stress data might result in an inaccurate estimation of waste packages sinking rate in salt formations.

The greatest challenges of rigorously modeling coupled hydro-mechanical processes in fractured rocks at different scales are associated with computational geometry. In addition, selections of continuous or discontinuous models, physical laws, and coupling priorities at different scales based on different geometric features determine the applicability of a numerical model for a certain type of problem. In this study, we present our multi-scale modeling capabilities that have been developed based on the numerical manifold method for analyzing coupled hydro-mechanical processes in fractured rocks. Based on their geometric features, the fractures are modeled as continua—finite-thickness porous zones, and discontinua—discontinuous interfaces and microscale asperities and granular systems. Different governing equations, physical laws, coupling priorities, and approaches for addressing fracture intersections and shearing are then applied to describe these. We applied these models to simulate coupled processes in fractured rocks using realistic geometry obtained from rock images at different scales. We first calculated shearing of a single fracture with different models and demonstrated the impacts of asperities on shearing. We then applied the continuous and discontinuous models to simulate a network of rough fractures, demonstrating that contact dynamics contribute significantly to the geometric, multi-physical evolution of systems where rough fractures are not mineral filled. For a discrete fracture network, our coupled processes modeling demonstrates that shearing of the discrete fractures can have a major impact on stress and pore pressure distribution. Lastly, we applied the discontinuous granular model to simulate evolution of a complex granular system with a deformation band, demonstrating that the deformation band can dominate contact dynamics, the structural and the stress evolution of the granular system.

The complex geometric features of subsurface fractures at different scales makes mesh generation challenging and/or expensive. In this paper, we make use of neural style transfer (NST), a machine learning technique, to generate mesh from rock fracture images. In this new approach, we use digital rock fractures at multiple scales that represent ‘content’ and define uniformly shaped and sized triangles to represent ‘style’. The 19-layer convolutional neural network (CNN) learns the content from the rock image, including lower-level features (such as edges and corners) and higher-level features (such as rock, fractures, or other mineral fillings), and learns the style from the triangular grids. By optimizing the cost function to achieve approximation to represent both the content and the style, numerical meshes can be generated and optimized. We utilize the NST to generate meshes for rough fractures with asperities formed in rock, a network of fractures embedded in rock, and a sand aggregate with multiple grains. Based on the examples, we show that this new NST technique can make mesh generation and optimization much more efficient by achieving a good balance between the density of the mesh and the presentation of the geometric features. Finally, we discuss future applications of this approach and perspectives of applying machine learning to bridge the gaps between numerical modeling and experiments.

This paper presents a coupled thermal-hydraulic-mechanical (THM) model for simulating failure processes in geological media. The coupling between stress/strain and heat transfer describing how thermal expansion affects stress is based on the theory of thermo-elasticity. Additionally, the coupling between stress/strain and fluid flow describing how pore-pressure affects stress is governed by Biot's consolidation theory. Stress/strain-dependent porosity/permeability/capillary-pressure defines the influence of stress on fluid flow and thermal fields. The THM model is implemented in the solver module that links the multiphase, multicomponent fluid flow simulator TOUGH2 with the geomechanical simulator RFPA (Rock Failure Process Analysis), which is based on the concept that heterogeneity leads to non-linearity and progressive failure behavior. Capability of TOUGH-RFPA simulator was verified by two benchmark problems related to hydraulic-mechanical and thermal-mechanical response in a hollow cylinder. Then the applicability of TOUGH-RFPA was demonstrated for modeling cooling-induced damage around a very deep geothermal well with mesoscopic heterogeneous properties, which showed complex damage evolution and fracturing during well cooling and fluid pressurization.

The greatest challenges of rigorously modeling coupled hydro-mechanical (HM) processes in fractured geological media at different scales are associated with computational geometry. These challenges include dynamic shearing and opening of intersecting fractures at discrete fracture scales as a result of coupled processes, and contact alteration along rough fracture surfaces that triggers structural and physical changes of fractures at micro-asperity scale. In this paper, these challenges are tackled by developing a comprehensive modeling approach for coupled processes in fractured geological media based on numerical manifold method (NMM) at multiple scales. Based on their distinct geometric features, fractures are categorized into three different scales: dominant fracture, discrete fracture, and discontinuum asperity scales. Here the scale is relative, that of the fracture relative to that of the research interest or domain. Different geometric representations of fractures at different scales are used, and different governing equations and constitutive relationships are applied. For dominant fractures, a finite thickness zone model is developed to treat a fracture as a porous nonlinear domain. Nonlinear fracture mechanical behavior is accurately modeled with an implicit approach based on strain energy. For discrete fractures, a zero-dimensional model was developed for analyzing fluid flow and mechanics in fractures that are geometrically treated as boundaries of the rock matrix. With the zero-dimensional model, these fractures can be modeled with arbitrary orientations and intersections. They can be fluid conduits or seals, and can be open, bonded or sliding. For the discontinuum asperity scale, the geometry of rough fracture surfaces is explicitly represented and contacts involving dynamic alteration of contacts among asperities are rigorously calculated. Using this approach, fracture alteration caused by deformation, re-arrangement and sliding of rough surfaces can be captured. Our comprehensive model is able to handle the computational challenges with accurate representation of intersections and shearing of fractures at the discrete fracture scale and rigorously treats contacts along rough fracture surfaces at the discontinuum asperity scale. With future development of three-dimensional (3D) geometric representation of discrete fracture networks in porous rock and contacts among multi-body systems, this model is promising as a basis of 3D fully coupled analysis of fractures at multiple scales, for advancing understanding and optimizing energy recovery and storage in fractured geological media.

In this study, RFPA-Petrol (rock failure process analysis on petroleum problems) is applied for modeling hydraulic fracture propagation in multilayered formations. RFPA-Petrol based on coupled hydraulic-mechanical-damage (HMD) modeling was first tested by modeling a laboratory scale experiment on a physical (cement) model with a single completion. The modeling demonstrated the capability of RFPA-Petrol for simulating hydraulic fracture propagation. Then, we used RFPA-Petrol to investigate how the difference in material properties between oil-bearing layers and interlayers and the fracturing fluid properties influence the propagation of dual fractures in multilayered laboratory-scale models. In this case, the models with geological discontinuities in the vertical direction are strongly heterogeneous and RFPA-Petrol simulations successfully modeled the fracture configurations.

In this paper, a new numerical simulation tool named TOUGH-FEMM is presented and applied to model three-dimensional (3D) hydraulic fracturing in porous rock. The fluid flow in both fractures and porous rock is modeled using TOUGH2, which is a well-established code for analysis of multiphase and multi-component fluid flow. Rock deformations associated with fracture propagation are modeled using finite element-meshfree method (FEMM). FEMM is an approach to simulate fracture propagation without remeshing, in which the fracture path does not need to be predetermined. Fracture mechanics with mixed-mode stress intensity factors are employed to detect fracture instability and determine the direction of fracture propagation. TOUGH-FEMM is verified for modeling fluid-driven fracture propagation in 3D through a number of simulation examples, including modeling of hydraulic fracturing laboratory experiments and by comparison to independent numerical simulation results for multiple interacting hydraulic fractures at ten to hundred meter scale.

Coupled hydro-mechanical (HM) processes are significant in geological engineering such as oil and gas extraction, geothermal energy, nuclear waste disposal and for the safety assessment of dam foundations and rock slopes, where the geological media usually consist of fractured rock masses. In this study, we developed a model for the analysis of coupled hydro-mechanical processes in porous rock containing dominant fractures, by using the numerical manifold method (NMM). In the current model, the fractures are regarded as different material domains from surrounding rock, i.e., finite-thickness fracture zones as porous media. Compared with the rock matrix, these fractured porous media are characterized with nonlinear behavior of hydraulic and mechanical properties, involving not only direct (poroelastic) coupling but also indirect (property change) coupling. By combining the potential energy associated with mechanical responses, fluid flow and solid–fluid interactions, a new formulation for direct HM coupling in porous media is established. For indirect coupling associated with fracture opening/closure, we developed a new approach implicitly considering the nonlinear properties by directly assembling the corresponding strain energy. Compared with traditional methods with approximation of the nonlinear constitutive equations, this new formulation achieves a more accurate representation of the nonlinear behavior. We implemented the new model for coupled HM analysis in NMM, which has fixed mathematical grid and accurate integration, and developed a new computer code. We tested the code for direct coupling on two classical poroelastic problems with coarse mesh and compared the results with the analytical solutions, achieving excellent agreement, respectively. Finally, we tested for indirect coupling on models with a single dominant fracture and obtained reasonable results. The current poroelastic NNM model with a continuous finite-thickness fracture zone will be further developed considering thin fractures in a discontinuous approach for a comprehensive model for HM analysis in fractured porous rock masses.

In this study, a numerical manifold method (NMM) model was developed for fully coupled analysis of hydro-mechanical (HM) processes in porous rock masses with discrete fractures. Using an NMM two-cover-mesh system of mathematical and physical covers, fractures are conveniently discretized by dividing the mathematical cover along fracture traces to physical cover, resulting in a discontinuous model on a non-conforming mesh. In this model, discrete fracture deformation (e.g. open and slip) and fracture fluid flow within a permeable and deformable porous rock matrix are rigorously considered. For porous rock, direct pore-volume coupling was modeled based on an energy-work scheme. For mechanical analysis of fractures, a fracture constitutive model for mechanically open states was introduced. For fluid flow in fractures, both along-fracture and normal-to-fracture fluid flow are modeled without introducing additional degrees of freedom. When the mechanical aperture of a fracture is changing, its hydraulic aperture and hydraulic conductivity is updated. At the same time, under the effect of coupled deformation and fluid flow, the contact state may dynamically change, and the corresponding contact constraint is updated each time step. Therefore, indirect coupling is realized under stringent considerations of coupled HM effects and fracture constitutive behavior transfer dynamically. To verify the new model, examples involving deformable porous media containing a single and two sets of fractures were designed, showing good accuracy. Last, the model was applied to analyze coupled HM behavior of fractured porous rock domains with complex fracture networks under effects of loading and injection.

In this study, a numerical manifold method (NMM) model is developed to analyze flow in porous media with discrete fractures in a non-conforming mesh. This new model is based on a two-cover-mesh system with a uniform triangular mathematical mesh and boundary/fracture-divided physical covers, where local independent cover functions are defined. The overlapping parts of the physical covers are elements where the global approximation is defined by the weighted average of the physical cover functions. The mesh is generated by a tree-cutting algorithm. A new model that does not introduce additional degrees of freedom (DOF) for fractures was developed for fluid flow in fractures. The fracture surfaces that belong to different physical covers are used to represent fracture flow in the direction of the fractures. In the direction normal to the fractures, the fracture surfaces are regarded as Dirichlet boundaries to exchange fluxes with the rock matrix. Furthermore, fractures that intersect with Dirichlet or Neumann boundaries are considered. Simulation examples are designed to verify the efficiency of the tree-cutting algorithm, the calculation's independency from the mesh orientation, and accuracy when modeling porous media that contain fractures with multiple intersections and different orientations. The simulation results show good agreement with available analytical solutions. Finally, the model is applied to cases that involve nine intersecting fractures and a complex network of 100 fractures, both of which achieve reasonable results. The new model is very practical for modeling flow in fractured porous media, even for a geometrically complex fracture network with large hydraulic conductivity contrasts between fractures and the matrix.

Numerical manifold method (NMM) is a numerical method known for analyzing continuous and discontinuous mechanical processes in a unified mathematical form. In this study we developed a new second-order NMM model to solve the nonlinear problem of water flow with the free surface priori unknown and the difficulty of modeling drains which could dramatically increase the meshing load. Our study consist of: (1) deriving two forms of NMM second-order approximation; (2) constructing the total potential energy for water flow by our energy-work seepage model considering Dirichlet, Neumann and material boundaries uniformly; (3) locating free surface nodes in two forms of second-order approximation; (4) tracking the free surface with an efficient iteration scheme without re-meshing; (5) deriving velocity and tunnel flux by second-order approximation. We developed a new code and demonstrate our model and code with examples including confined drainage tunnel and free surface flow through a dam. We compare the results such as tunnel flux or free surface with linear NMM, analytical or other available numerical solutions. We prove that: the two forms of second-order NMM (1) yield consistent results; (2) for modeling drains involving local intensive change, could achieve accurate result of tunnel flux calculation and dramatically save computation load with linear velocity distribution in coarse mesh; (3) for free surface iteration, are efficient with fast convergence to accurate results and with rather coarse mesh. As a result, our second-order NMM model is applicable to free surface flow with inner drains for free surface locating and flux calculation, and seepage stability analysis, laying a solid foundation for extending to coupled hydro-mechanical analysis.
