This study investigates the reproducibility of the reconstructed image sharpness, after modifications of the geometry setup, for a variable magnification micro-CT (μCT) scanner. All the measurements were performed on a novel engineered μCT scanner for in vivo imaging of small animals (Xalt), which has been recently built at the Institute of Clinical Physiology of the National Research Council (IFC-CNR, Pisa, Italy), in partnership with the University of Pisa. The Xalt scanner is equipped with an integrated software for on-line geometric recalibration, which will be used throughout the experiments. In order to evaluate the losses of image quality due to modifications of the geometry setup, we have made 22 consecutive acquisitions by changing alternatively the system geometry between two different setups (Large FoV - LF, and High Resolution - HR). For each acquisition, the tomographic images have been reconstructed before and after the on-line geometric recalibration. For each reconstruction, the image sharpness was evaluated using two different figures of merit: (i) the percentage contrast on a small bar pattern of fixed frequency (f = 5.5 lp/mm for the LF setup and f = 10 lp/mm for the HR setup) and (ii) the image entropy. We have found that, due to the small-scale mechanical uncertainty (in the order of the voxel size), a recalibration is necessary for each geometric setup after repositioning of the system's components; the resolution losses due to the lack of recalibration are worse for the HR setup (voxel size = 18.4 μm). This study presents an advanced multipoint vision-based system for dynamic displacement measurement of civil infrastructures. The proposed system consists of commercial camcorders, frame grabbers, low-cost PCs, and a wireless LAN access point. The images of target panels attached to a structure are captured by camcorders and streamed into the PC via frame grabbers. Then the displacements of targets are calculated using image processing techniques with premeasured calibration parameters. This system can simultaneously support two camcorders at the subsystem level for dynamic real-time displacement measurement. The data of each subsystem including system time are wirelessly transferred from the subsystem PCs to master PC and vice versa. Furthermore, synchronization process is implemented to ensure the time synchronization between the master PC and subsystem PCs. Several shaking table tests were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed system, and the results showed very good agreement with those from a conventional sensor with an error of less than 2%.

Objectives: Calibrating a disease simulation model's outputs to existing clinical data is vital to generate confidence in the model's predictive ability. Calibration involves two challenges: 1) defining a total goodness-of-fit (GOF) score for multiple targets if simultaneous fitting is required, and 2) searching for the optimal parameter set that minimizes the total GOF score (i.e., yields the best fit). To address these two prominent challenges, we have applied an engineering approach to calibrate a microsimulation model, the Lung Cancer Policy Model (LCPM)., Methods: First, 11 targets derived from clinical and epidemiologic data were combined into a total GOF score by a weighted-sum approach, accounting for the user-defined relative importance of the calibration targets. Second, two automated parameter search algorithms, simulated annealing (SA) and genetic algorithm (GA), were independently applied to a simultaneous search of 28 natural history parameters to minimize the total GOF score. Algorithm performance metrics were defined for speed and model fit., Results: Both search algorithms obtained total GOF scores below 95 within 1000 search iterations. Our results show that SA outperformed GA in locating a lower GOF. After calibrating our LCPM, the predicted natural history of lung cancer was consistent with other mathematical models of lung cancer development., Conclusion: An engineering-based calibration method was able to simultaneously fit LCPM output to multiple calibration targets, with the benefits of fast computational speed and reduced the need for human input and its potential bias.

The ultrasound nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of materials course was developed for applied engineering technology students at Drexel University's Goodwin College of Professional Studies. This three-credit, hands-on laboratory course consists of two parts: the first part with an emphasis on the foundations of NDE, and the second part during which ultrasound NDE techniques are utilized in the evaluation of parts and materials. NDE applications are presented and applied through real-life problems, including calibration and use of the latest ultrasonic testing instrumentation. The students learn engineering and physical principles of measurements of sound velocity in different materials, attenuation coefficients, material thickness, and location and dimensions of discontinuities in various materials, such as holes, cracks, and flaws. The work in the laboratory enhances the fundamentals taught during classroom sessions. This course will ultimately result in improvements in the educational process ["The greater expectations," national panel report, http://www.greaterexpectations.org (last viewed February, 2008); R. M. Felder and R. Brent "The intellectual development of Science and Engineering Students. Part 2: Teaching to promote growth," J. Eng. Educ. 93, 279-291 (2004)] since industry is becoming increasingly reliant on the effective application of NDE technology and the demand on NDE specialists is increasing. NDE curriculum was designed to fulfill levels I and II NDE in theory and training requirements, according to American Society for Nondestructive Testing, OH, Recommended Practice No. SNT-TC-1A (2006).

We report on results from triaxial drained monotonic and cyclic compression tests for four different aggregates (gabbro, limestone, demolished concrete, steel slag), and discuss the applicability of UBCSAND model for simulating the relevant non-linear stress-strain curves. First, UBCSAND is integrated analytically for the elastic and plastic volumetric and deviatoric strains, leading to a pair of novel closed-form solutions expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions. These solutions are inherently free of numerical errors and can be used for the evaluation of results from numerical integration. Second, three calibration techniques for the model parameters are presented and compared: (1) a graphical “chart” solution based on results from forward numerical simulations; (2) a numerical approach based on minimization of residuals; and (3) an informed trial-and-error approach based on the analytical solution. Errors in numerical integration of the model are explored by comparing the analytical solution against results from an Euler integration. Variations in the calibrated parameters are discussed for drained monotonic and cyclic triaxial loading considering different types of aggregates.

The soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) is possibly both a marker for and target of numerous diseases. Herein, we describe a homogeneous mix-and-read assay for the detection of human sEH based on using split-luciferase detection coupled with anti-sEH nanobodies. Selective anti-sEH nanobodies were individually fused with NanoLuc Binary Technology (NanoBiT), which consists of a large and small portion of NanoLuc (LgBiT and SmBiT, respectively). Different orientations of the LgBiT and SmBiT-nanobody fusions were expressed and investigated for their ability to reform the active NanoLuc in the presence of the sEH. After optimization, the linear range of the assay could reach 3 orders of magnitude with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.4 ng/mL. The assay has a high sensitivity to human sEH and reached a similar detection limit to our previously reported conventional nanobody-based ELISA. The procedure of the assay was faster (30 min total) and easy to operate, providing a more flexible and simple way to monitor human sEH levels in biological samples. In general, the immunoassay proposed here offers a more efficient detection and quantification approach that can be easily adapted to numerous macromolecules.

High-accuracy surface metrology is vitally important in manufacturing ultra-high-quality free-form mirrors designed to manipulate x-ray light with nanometer-scale wavelengths. The current and potential capabilities of x˗ray mirror manufacturing are limited by inherent imperfections of the integrated metrology tools. Metrology tools are currently calibrated with super-polished flat test-standard/reference mirrors. This is acceptable for fabrication of slightly curved x-ray optics. However, for even moderately curved aspherical x-ray mirrors the flat-reference calibration is not sufficiently accurate. For micro-stitching interferometry developed for surface measurements with curved x-ray mirrors, the tool aberration errors are known to be transferred into the optical surface topography of x-ray mirrors. Our approach to improving metrology is to thoroughly calibrate the measuring tool and apply the results of the calibration to deconvolution of the measured data. Here we explore the application of a recently developed technique for calibrating the instrument transfer function (ITF) of 3D optical surface profilers to metrology with significantly curved x-ray optics. The technique, based on test standards patterned with two-dimensional (2D) binary pseudo-random arrays (BPRAs), employs the unique properties of the BPRA patterns in the spatial frequency domain. The inherent 2D power spectral density of the pattern has a deterministic white-noise-like character that allows direct determination of the ITF with uniform sensitivity over the entire spatial frequency range and field of view of an instrument. The high efficacy of the technique has been previously demonstrated in application to metrology with flat and slightly curved optics. Here, we concentrate on development of an efficient fabrication process for production of highly randomized (HR) BPRA test standards on flat and 500-mm spherical optical substrates. We also compare and discuss the results of the ITF calibration of an interferometric microscope when using the HR BPRA standards on flat and curved substrates.

The automation of the engineering procedure of calibrating instrumentation by introducing digital technology of computer vision into the production process is assessed. Optimization of the production process by means of digital technology of computer vision eliminates the adverse effect of some errors and, by reducing the time spent on certification, diminishes the impact of high-temperature processes on measuring equipment. An operational characteristic of calibration is developed taking into account subjective errors, such as the interpolation and parallax errors, which occur if testing is carried out by an operator. The determined dependence is compared with the plot based on the calibration indicators in introducing computer vision technology into the production process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) allows for imaging, diffraction, and spectroscopy of materials on length scales ranging from microns to atoms. By using a high-speed, direct electron detector, it is now possible to record a full two-dimensional (2D) image of the diffracted electron beam at each probe position, typically a 2D grid of probe positions. These 4D-STEM datasets are rich in information, including signatures of the local structure, orientation, deformation, electromagnetic fields, and other sample-dependent properties. However, extracting this information requires complex analysis pipelines that include data wrangling, calibration, analysis, and visualization, all while maintaining robustness against imaging distortions and artifacts. In this paper, we present py4DSTEM, an analysis toolkit for measuring material properties from 4D-STEM datasets, written in the Python language and released with an open-source license. We describe the algorithmic steps for dataset calibration and various 4D-STEM property measurements in detail and present results from several experimental datasets. We also implement a simple and universal file format appropriate for electron microscopy data in py4DSTEM, which uses the open-source HDF5 standard. We hope this tool will benefit the research community and help improve the standards for data and computational methods in electron microscopy, and we invite the community to contribute to this ongoing project.

In all ultrasonic material evaluation methods, transducers and sensors play a key role of mechanoelectrical conversion. Their transduction characteristics must be known quantitatively in designing and implementing successful structural health monitoring (SHM) systems. Yet, their calibration and verification have lagged behind most other aspects of SHM system development. This study aims to extend recent advances in quantifying the transmission and receiving sensitivities to normally incident longitudinal waves of ultrasonic transducers and acoustic emission sensors. This paper covers extending the range of detection to lower frequencies, expanding to areal and multiple sensing methods and examining transducer loading effects. Using the refined transmission characteristics, the receiving sensitivities of transducers and sensors were reexamined under the conditions representing their actual usage. Results confirm that the interfacial wave transmission is governed by wave propagation theory and that the receiving sensitivity of resonant acoustic emission sensors peaks at antiresonance.

SignificanceVisible light optical coherence tomography (OCT) is emerging for spectroscopic and ultrahigh resolution imaging, but challenges remain. Depth-dependent dispersion limits retinal image quality and current correction approaches are cumbersome. Inconsistent group refractive indices during image reconstruction also limit reproducibility.AimTo introduce and evaluate water wavenumber calibration (WWC), which corrects depth-dependent dispersion and provides an accurate depth axis in water.ApproachEnabled by a visible light OCT spectrometer configuration with a 3- to 4-dB sensitivity roll-off over 1 mm in air across a 90-nm bandwidth, we determine the spectral phase of a 1-mm water cell, an affine function of water wavenumber. Via WWC, we reconstruct visible light OCT human retinal images with 1.3-μm depth resolution in water.ResultsImages clearly reveal Bruch's membrane, inner plexiform layer lamination, and a thin nerve fiber layer in the temporal parafovea. WWC halves the processing time, while achieving the same image definition as an assumption-free gold standard approach, suggesting that water wavenumber is a suitable proxy for tissue wavenumber. WWC also provides a depth axis in water without explicitly assuming a group refractive index.ConclusionsWWC is a simple method that helps to realize the full potential of visible light OCT.

Recently, a technique for calibrating the modulation transfer function (MTF) of a broad variety of metrology instrumentation has been demonstrated. This technique is based on test samples structured as one-dimensional binary pseudo-random (BPR) sequences and two-dimensional BPR arrays (BPRAs). The inherent power spectral density of BPR gratings (sequences) and arrays has a deterministic white-noise-like character that allows direct determination of the MTF with uniform sensitivity over the entire spatial frequency range and field-of-view of an instrument. As such, the BPR samples satisfy the characteristics of a test standard: functionality, ease of specification and fabrication, reproducibility, and low sensitivity to manufacturing error. Here we discuss our recent developments directed to the optimization of the sample design, fabrication, application, and data processing procedures, suitable for thorough characterization of large aperture optical interferometers. Compared with the previous coded-aperture based design, the improved, 'highly randomized' BPRA pattern of the new test standard provides better accuracy and reliability of instrument MTF and aberration characterization, and enables operation optimization of large aperture optical interferometers. We describe the pattern generation algorithm and tests to verify the compliance to desired BPRA topography. The data acquisition and analysis procedures for different applications of the technique are also discussed.

The optical design of the Long Trace Profiler optical system is explored with a commercial raytrace program, Zemax OpticStudio™ (ZOS)1, with the intent of finding and correcting sources of systematic error. ZOS provides both geometric raytracing tools and physical optics Gaussian beam propagation and diffraction image calculation tools, and two design modes, sequential component (SC) and non-sequential component (NSC) that are optimized for different aspects of the design process. The original LTP-II system employs a singlet lens with a 1250 mm focal length. It is optimized to provide minimum distortion over a surface slope angle range of ±5 mrad. Using the ZOS tools, we are able to simulate ghost rays that produce distortion in the beam spot image and can minimize the distortion by deliberate misalignment of the beamsplitter (BS) components. Unfortunately, the reference beam is compromised because of the component tilts. The most recent LTP500 system design simplifies the optical system and makes the reference beam usable again, even with misalignment of the polarizing beamsplitter (PBS). Two lenses are designed for the LTP500 - a cemented doublet that has been fabricated, and a singlet with one aspheric surface. Both have focal distances of 500 mm with an expanded angular measurement range of ±10 mrad. The aspheric singlet provides superior performance. ZOS allows the import of wavefront measurement data produced by commercial interferometer software. We apply the wavefront error measurement from the cemented doublet to the model to show that the 19nm RMS wavefront error needs to be improved by at least a factor of ten in order to reduce the systematic error to a level that will allow the LTP to approach its design limit of a few tens of nanoradians.

Estimating and recording a worker's picking rate during tree fruit harvesting can provide useful information for better workforce management, orchard platform crew management, and generation of yield maps (in combination with position). A commercial picking bag was instrumented to estimate harvested fruit weight in real-time. All electronics were placed inside an enclosure that was placed between the bag and its shoulder straps, without hindering picking motions. The electronics included two load cells to measure the forces exerted on the straps by the bag and fruits, an Arduino microcontroller, signal conditioning circuits, data storage, wireless communication components, and inertial sensors. Software was developed for data acquisition, filtering, transmission, and storage. Two calibration models were developed to estimate fruit weight. One model (model 2) used inertial sensor data to compensate for the picking bag's angle with respect to gravity direction, while the other model (model 1) did not. Dynamic calibration experiments were performed over the entire weight range of the bag (0 to 20 kg) with reference objects of known weight (baseballs and fresh apples). The weight was divided into three ranges: light load (13 kg). Results showed that model 1 performed slightly better in the light load range, but model 2 was superior in the medium and heavy load ranges, presumably due to bag angle compensation. The best root mean squared error over the entire range was achieved by model 2 and was 0.36 kg (1.8% of bag capacity). In an application case study, two bags were used by workers harvesting from a platform in a commercial apple orchard. From the data, the pickers' harvesting speeds were estimated, and the fruit yield distribution was calculated for one side of a tree row.

X-ray optics, desired for beamlines at free-electron-laser and diffraction-limited-storage-ring x-ray light sources, must have almost perfect surfaces, capable of delivering light to experiments without significant degradation of brightness and coherence. To accurately characterize such optics at an optical metrology lab, two basic types of surface slope profilometers are used: The long trace profilers (LTPs) and nanometer optical measuring (NOM) like angular deflectometers, based on electronic autocollimator (AC) ELCOMAT-3000. The inherent systematic errors of the instrument's optical sensors set the principle limit to their measuring performance. Where autocollimator of a NOM-like profiler may be calibrated at a unique dedicated facility, this is for a particular configuration of distance, aperture size, and angular range that does not always match the exact use in a scanning measurement with the profiler. Here we discuss the developed methodology, experimental set-up, and numerical methods of transferring the calibration of one reference AC to the scanning AC of the Optical Surface Measuring System (OSMS), recently brought to operation at the ALS Xray Optics Laboratory. We show that precision calibration of the OSMS performed in three steps, allows us to provide high confidence and accuracy low-spatial-frequency metrology and not â€print into' measurements the inherent systematic error of tool in use. With the examples of the OSMS measurements with a state-of-The-Art x-ray aspherical mirror, available from one of the most advanced vendors of X-ray optics, we demonstrate the high efficacy of the developed calibration procedure. The results of our work are important for obtaining high reliability data, needed for sophisticated numerical simulations of beamline performance and optimization of beamline usage of the optics. We investigate and compare the spatial (lateral) resolution, or more generally, the optical/instrumental transfer function (OTF/ITF) of surface slope measuring profilometers of two different types that are commonly used for high accuracy characterization of x-ray optics at the long-spatial-wavelength range. These are an autocollimator based profiler, Optical Surface Measuring System (OSMS), and a long trace profiler, LTP-II, both available at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) XË-Ray Optics Lab (XROL). In the OSMS, an ELCOMAT-3000 electronic auto-collimator, vertically mounted to the translation carriage and equipped with an aperture of 2.5 mm diameter, is scanned along the surface under test. The LTPË-II OTF has been measured for two different configurations, a classical two-beam pencil-beam-interferometry and a single-Gaussian-beam deflectometry. For the ITF calibration, we apply a recently developed method based on test surfaces with one-dimensional (1D) linear chirped height profiles of constant slope amplitude. Analytical expressions for the OTFs, empirically deduced based on the experimental results, are presented. We also discuss the application of the results of the ITF measurements and modeling to improve the surface slope metrology with state-of-The-Art x-ray mirrors. This work was supported by the U. S. Accurate assessment of burn severity is critical for wound care and the course of treatment. Delays in classification translate to delays in burn management, increasing the risk of scarring and infection. To this end, numerous imaging techniques have been used to examine tissue properties to infer burn severity. Spatial frequency-domain imaging (SFDI) has also been used to characterize burns based on the relationships between histologic observations and changes in tissue properties. Recently, machine learning has been used to classify burns by combining optical features from multispectral or hyperspectral imaging. Rather than employ models of light propagation to deduce tissue optical properties, we investigated the feasibility of using SFDI reflectance data at multiple spatial frequencies, with a support vector machine (SVM) classifier, to predict severity in a porcine model of graded burns. Calibrated reflectance images were collected using SFDI at eight wavelengths (471 to 851 nm) and five spatial frequencies (0 to 0.2  mm  -  1). Three models were built from subsets of this initial dataset. The first subset included data taken at all wavelengths with the planar (0  mm  -  1) spatial frequency, the second comprised data at all wavelengths and spatial frequencies, and the third used all collected data at values relative to unburned tissue. These data subsets were used to train and test cubic SVM models, and compared against burn status 28 days after injury. Model accuracy was established through leave-one-out cross-validation testing. The model based on images obtained at all wavelengths and spatial frequencies predicted burn severity at 24 h with 92.5% accuracy. The model composed of all values relative to unburned skin was 94.4% accurate. By comparison, the model that employed only planar illumination was 88.8% accurate. This investigation suggests that the combination of SFDI with machine learning has potential for accurately predicting burn severity.

PurposeTo develop and translate a metabolite-specific imaging sequence using a symmetric echo planar readout for clinical hyperpolarized (HP) Carbon-13 (13 C) applications.MethodsInitial data were acquired from patients with prostate cancer (N = 3) and high-grade brain tumors (N = 3) on a 3T scanner. Samples of [1-13 C]pyruvate were polarized for at least 2 h using a 5T SPINlab system operating at 0.8 K. Following injection of the HP substrate, pyruvate, lactate, and bicarbonate (for brain studies) were sequentially excited with a singleband spectral-spatial RF pulse and signal was rapidly encoded with a single-shot echo planar readout on a slice-by-slice basis. Data were acquired dynamically with a temporal resolution of 2 s for prostate studies and 3 s for brain studies.ResultsHigh pyruvate signal was seen throughout the prostate and brain, with conversion to lactate being shown across studies, whereas bicarbonate production was also detected in the brain. No Nyquist ghost artifacts or obvious geometric distortion from the echo planar readout were observed. The average error in center frequency was 1.2 ± 17.0 and 4.5 ± 1.4 Hz for prostate and brain studies, respectively, below the threshold for spatial shift because of bulk off-resonance.ConclusionThis study demonstrated the feasibility of symmetric EPI to acquire HP 13 C metabolite maps in a clinical setting. As an advance over prior single-slice dynamic or single time point volumetric spectroscopic imaging approaches, this metabolite-specific EPI acquisition provided robust whole-organ coverage for brain and prostate studies while retaining high SNR, spatial resolution, and dynamic temporal resolution.

PurposeAcquisition timing and B1 calibration are two key factors that affect the quality and accuracy of hyperpolarized 13 C MRI. The goal of this project was to develop a new approach using regional bolus tracking to trigger Bloch-Siegert B1 mapping and real-time B1 calibration based on regional B1 measurements, followed by dynamic imaging of hyperpolarized 13 C metabolites in vivo.MethodsThe proposed approach was implemented on a system which allows real-time data processing and real-time control on the sequence. Real-time center frequency calibration upon the bolus arrival was also added. The feasibility of applying the proposed framework for in vivo hyperpolarized 13 C imaging was tested on healthy rats, tumor-bearing mice and a healthy volunteer on a clinical 3T scanner following hyperpolarized [1-13 C]pyruvate injection. Multichannel receive coils were used in the human study.ResultsAutomatic acquisition timing based on either regional bolus peak or bolus arrival was achieved with the proposed framework. Reduced blurring artifacts in real-time reconstructed images were observed with real-time center frequency calibration. Real-time computed B1 scaling factors agreed with real-time acquired B1 maps. Flip angle correction using B1 maps results in a more consistent quantification of metabolic activity (i.e, pyruvate-to-lactate conversion, kPL ). Experiment recordings are provided to demonstrate the real-time actions during the experiment.ConclusionsThe proposed method was successfully demonstrated on animals and a human volunteer, and is anticipated to improve the efficient use of the hyperpolarized signal as well as the accuracy and robustness of hyperpolarized 13 C imaging.

Acoustic emission (AE) sensors and ultrasonic transducers were characterized for the detection of Rayleigh waves (RW). Small aperture reference sensors were characterized first using the fracture of glass capillary tubes in combination with a theoretical displacement calculation, which utilized finite element method (FEM) and was verified by laser interferometer. For the calibration of 18 commercial sensors and two piezoceramic disks, a 90° angle beam transducer was used to generate RW pulses on an aluminum transfer block. By a substitution method, RW receiving sensitivity of a sensor under test was determined over the range of frequency from 22 kHz to 2 MHz. Results were compared to the sensitivities to normally incident waves (NW) and to other guided waves (GW). It was found that (1) NW sensitivities are always higher than RW sensitivities, (2) differences between NW and RW receiving sensitivities are dependent on frequency and sensor size, (3) most sensors show comparable RW and GW receiving sensitivities, especially those of commonly used AE sensors, and (4) the receiving sensitivities of small aperture (1 mm diameter) sensors behave differently from larger sensors.

In order to ensure the measurement accuracy of high-acceleration vibration sensors used in engineering applications, it is necessary to calibrate their key performance parameters at high acceleration. The high-acceleration vibration calibration system produces high-acceleration vibration by utilizing the resonance amplification principle; however, the resonance frequency of the resonant beam changes with increasing amplitude, affected by the influences of nonlinear and other factors. In this study, a phase-locked resonance tracking control method based on the phase resonance principle is proposed to accurately and quickly track the resonance frequency of the resonant beam, which can improve the accuracy and stability of resonance control. The resonant beam is able to produce stable vibration with an amplitude exceeding 7500 m/s2 by phase-locking and tracking the resonant frequency. A calibration system built with this method can provide stable vibration with an amplitude of 500–10,000 m/s2 in the range of 80–4000 Hz. Comparison experiments with the commonly used amplitude iteration amplification method demonstrate that the proposed method can give an acceleration stability control index of less than 0.5% and a resonance tracking time of less than 0.1 s. With the translation of metabolic MRI with hyperpolarized 13C agents into the clinic, imaging approaches will require large volumetric FOVs to support clinical applications. Parallel imaging techniques will be crucial to increasing volumetric scan coverage while minimizing RF requirements and temporal resolution. Calibrationless parallel imaging approaches are well-suited for this application because they eliminate the need to acquire coil profile maps or auto-calibration data. In this work, we explored the utility of a calibrationless parallel imaging method (SAKE) and corresponding sampling strategies to accelerate and undersample hyperpolarized 13C data using 3D blipped EPI acquisitions and multichannel receive coils, and demonstrated its application in a human study of [1-13C]pyruvate metabolism.

Individual perspiration level indicates a person's physical status as well as their comfort level. Therefore, continuous perspiration level measurement enables people to monitor these conditions for applications including fitness assessment, athlete physical status monitoring, and patient/elderly care. Prior work on perspiration (sweat) sensing required the user either to be static or to wear the adhesive sensor directly on the skin, which limits users' mobility and comfort. In this paper, we present a novel conductive thread-based textile sensor that measures an individual's on-cloth sweat quantity. The sensor consists of three conductive threads. Each conductive thread is surrounded by a braided cotton cover. An additional braided cotton cover is placed outside the three conductive threads, holding them in a position that is stable for measurement. the sensor can be embedded at various locations on a person's clothing. When the person sweats, the cotton braids absorb the sweat and change the conductivity (resistance) between conductive threads. We used a voltage dividing circuit to measure this resistance as the sensor output (DC). We then conducted a sensor calibration to map this measured voltage to the quantity of electrolyte solution (with the same density as sweat) applied to the sensor. We used this sensor to measure individuals' perspiration quantity and infer their perceived perspiration levels. The system is able to limit the average prediction error to 0.4 levels when compared to five pre-defined perceived perspiration levels.

To preserve the brightness and coherence of x-rays produced by diffraction-limited-storage-ring (DLSR) and free-electron- laser (FEL) light sources, beamline optics must have unprecedented quality. For example, in the case of the most advanced beamlines for the DLSR source under development at the Advanced Light Source (ALS), the ALS-U, we need highly curved x-ray mirrors with surface slope tolerances better than 50-100 nrad (root-mean-square, rms). At the ALS X-Ray Optics Lab (XROL), we are working on the development of a new Optical Surface Measuring System (OSMS) with the required measurement accuracy. The OSMS is capable for the two-dimensional (2D) surface slope metrology over the spatial range from the sub-mm scale to the clear aperture. Usage of different arrangements of the OSMS sensors allows measuring the mirrors in the face-up or side-facing orientation, corresponding to the beamline application. The OSMS translation system and data acquisition software are designed to support multi scan measurement runs optimized for automatic suppression and compensation of instrumental drifts and major angular and spatial systematic errors. Here, we discuss the recent results of the OSMS research and development project. We provide details of the OSMS design and describe results of experimental performance tests of the gantry system. In particular, we show that the system is capable for measurement repeatability with strongly curved mirrors on the level of 20 nrad (rms). The high angular resolution of the OSMS rotational tip-tilt stage is adequate for implementation of instrumental calibration with using the mirror under test as a reference. The achieved measuring accuracy is demonstrated via comparison to metrology with the carefully calibrated Developmental Long Trace Profiler, also available at the XROL.

The Imperial County Community Air Monitoring Network was developed as part of a community-engaged research study to provide real-time particulate matter (PM) air quality information at a high spatial resolution in Imperial County, California. The network augmented the few existing regulatory monitors and increased monitoring near susceptible populations. Monitors were both calibrated and field validated, a key component of evaluating the quality of the data produced by the community monitoring network. Artificial intelligence (AI)'s rapid development has produced a variety of state-of-the-art models and methods that rely on network architectures and features engineering. However, some AI approaches achieve high accurate results only at the expense of interpretability and reliability. These problems may easily lead to bad experiences, lower trust levels, and systematic or even catastrophic risks. This article introduces the theoretical framework of scenarios engineering for building trustworthy AI techniques. We propose six key dimensions, including intelligence and index, calibration and certification, and verification and validation to achieve more robust and trusting AI, and address issues for future research directions and applications along this direction. Patient-specific phantomless calibration of computed tomography (CT) scans has the potential to simplify and expand the use of pre-existing clinical CT for quantitative bone densitometry and bone strength analysis for diagnostic and monitoring purposes. In this study, we quantified the inter-operator reanalysis precision errors for a novel implementation of patient-specific phantomless calibration, using air and either aortic blood or hip adipose tissue as internal calibrating reference materials, and sought to confirm the equivalence between phantomless and (traditional) phantom-based measurements. CT scans of the spine and hip for 25 women and 15 men (mean±SD age of 67±9years, range 41-86years), one scan per anatomic site per patient, were analyzed independently by two analysts using the VirtuOst software (O.N. Diagnostics, Berkeley, CA). The scans were acquired at 120kVp, with a slice thickness/increment of 3mm or less, on nine different CT scanner models across 24 different scanners. The main parameters assessed were areal bone mineral density (BMD) at the hip (total hip and femoral neck), trabecular volumetric BMD at the spine, and vertebral and femoral strength by finite element analysis; other volumetric BMD measures were also assessed. We found that the reanalysis precision errors for all phantomless measurements were ≤0.5%, which was as good as for phantom calibration. Regression analysis indicated equivalence of the phantom- versus phantomless-calibrated measurements (slope not different than unity, R2≥0.98). Of the main parameters assessed, non-significant paired mean differences (n=40) between the two measurements ranged from 0.6% for hip areal BMD to 1.1% for mid-vertebral trabecular BMD. These results indicate that phantom-equivalent measurements of both BMD and finite element-derived bone strength can be reliably obtained from CT scans using patient-specific phantomless calibration.

The development of deterministic polishing techniques has given rise to vendors that manufacture high quality threedimensional x-ray optics. The surface metrology on these optics remains a difficult task. For the fabrication, vendors usually use unique surface metrology tools, generally developed on site, that are not available in the optical metrology labs at x-ray facilities. At the Advanced Light Source X-Ray Optics Laboratory, we have developed a rather straightforward interferometric-microscopy-based procedure capable of sub microradian characterization of sagittal slope variation of x-ray optics for two-dimensionally focusing and collimating (such as ellipsoids, paraboloids, etc.). In the paper, we provide the mathematical foundation of the procedure and describe the related instrument calibration. We also present analytical expression describing the ideal surface shape in the sagittal direction of a spheroid specified by the conjugate parameters of the optic's beamline application. The expression is useful when analyzing data obtained with such optics. The high efficiency of the developed measurement and data analysis procedures is demonstrated in results of measurements with a number of x-ray optics with sagittal radius of curvature between 56 mm and 480 mm. We also discuss potential areas of further improvement.
