The article focuses on the collection of papers presented at the Second International Conference on Microchannels and Minichannels, held in Rochester, New York, June 17-19, 2004. The conference was hosted under the joint sponsorship of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Rochester Institute of Technology. The first paper by highlights the research needs and application of advanced instrumentation, such as differential pressure measurements, current distribution and neutron radiography, in studying the water distribution in minichannel passages in PEM fuel cells.

The article presents a discussion on the paper "Simple Estimation of Prevalence of Hortonian Flow in New York City Watersheds" by M. Todd Walter, Vishal K. Mehta, Alexis M. Marrone, Jan Boll, Pierre Gerard-Marchant, Tammo S. Steenhuis, and Michael F. Walter. The paper is a welcome contribution to the engineering literature, as it raises the issue of the process and pathway of delivery of water to stream. The paper examines critically the prevalence of Hortonian flow in the New York City watershed. The authors find Hortonian overland flow occurrence to be highly restrictive in terms of rain intensities and durations.

Offshore wave setup generated by wave breaking during coastal storms can create significant flow through tidal inlets and increase bay flooding. However, these flow contributions are not always considered when determining coastal flooding risk for engineering studies. This paper describes the wave-driven flow process at tidal inlets and demonstrates its impact on bay flooding on Long Island, New York. Numerical simulations using a coupled hydrodynamic and wave model are presented to show contributions to bay water level by wave-driven flow with respect to those by wind surge. These simulations include two major historical coastal storms and a small nor’easter in 2003, during which the model was validated using field measurements of water level. Finally, an approach is introduced for estimating wave-induced flow contributions to bay flooding as a function of inlet and storm characteristics, including tidal prism and wave conditions. The findings of this study indicate that wave-induced flow contributions make up 15–35% of the total storm surge, where the wave-induced flow contribution increases with increased inlet efficiency. This article shares the experiences and lessons learned from a community project that aims to develop a technology-based solution to improve communications between service users and service providers. Through this multi-year project in the Capital District of New York State, a team of social workers and engineers created a mobile app prototype based on the feedback from the community. This case study shares insights for conceptualizing various phases of community engagement as well as for recruiting multiple groups of stakeholders in the process of creating a collective vision for technology development. The Adirondacks of New York State, USA is a region that is sensitive to atmospheric mercury (Hg) deposition. In this study, we estimated atmospheric Hg deposition to the Adirondacks using a new scheme that combined numerical modeling and limited experimental data. The majority of the land cover in the Adirondacks is forested with 47% of the total area deciduous, 20% coniferous and 10% mixed. We used litterfall plus throughfall deposition as the total atmospheric Hg deposition to coniferous and deciduous forests during the leaf-on period, and wet Hg deposition plus modeled atmospheric dry Hg deposition as the total Hg deposition to the deciduous forest during the leaf-off period and for the non-forested areas year-around. To estimate atmospheric dry Hg deposition we used the Big Leaf model. The average atmospheric Hg deposition to the Adirondacks was estimated as 17.4 g m yr with a range of −3.7–46.0 g m yr. Atmospheric Hg dry deposition (370 kg yr) was found to be more important than wet deposition (210 kg yr) to the entire Adirondacks (2.4 million ha). The spatial pattern showed a large variation in atmospheric Hg deposition with scattered areas in the eastern Adirondacks having total Hg deposition greater than 30 μg m−2 yr−1, while the southwestern and the northern areas received Hg deposition ranging from 25–30 μg m−2 yr−1. University at Buffalo undergraduate students are required to complete a non-credit-bearing information competency assessment prior to graduation, preferably within their first year of study. Called the Library Skills Workbook, this assessment has evolved from a short, print-based quiz into a sophisticated, multi-module tutorial and assessment on the Blackboard courseware platform (http://www.blackboard.com). The author presents a case study describing the usefulness of a large-scale, online information competency requirement to meet the developing research needs of undergraduate students. The case presented includes specifics of measured information proficiencies, the benefits and challenges of using Blackboard courseware, student learning outcomes, user and faculty feedback, and the introduction of a new, alternate version of the Workbook that is targeted to engineering students. Practical issues regarding the administration, maintenance, and marketing of the requirement are addressed as well. The author details her efforts and those of university administrators to enforce Workbook completion in students' initial year of study, as well as ongoing plans to rename the Workbook to better demonstrate the currency and relevance of its measured competencies. Future projects are also discussed, including the author's collaboration with her colleagues to create additional discipline-specific Workbook versions and, where possible, to integrate those directly into undergraduate coursework and curricula.
