An adequate supply of fresh outdoor air is important to create healthy and comfortable indoor building environments. Currently, most of the residential buildings in mild climate European countries, such as Portugal or Spain, remain naturally ventilated. Distinct concerns have emerged in the building community regarding the indoor air quality (IAQ) in these buildings since several studies have shown that they are often poorly ventilated. The main cause has been identified as occupants' different window opening behaviour, which can vary notably from one apartment to the next. This work presents a comparative method for evaluating occupants' exposure to CO2 concentration levels in existing buildings based on the comparison of cumulative frequency distribution curves. Indoor CO2 concentration levels recorded over 17 months in the bedrooms and living rooms of eight apartments of a naturally ventilated residential building located in Porto (Portugal) were used as experimental input data for developing the method and to calibrate the IAQ performance of an EnergyPlus building model. The calibrated building model exhibited a good agreement with the recorded data on the apartments, reporting maximum Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE) for the majority of the apartments below 5 and 10% for the living rooms and bedrooms, respectively., MORE-CONNECT project is funded by the European Commission within the framework of the Horizon 2020 program. The European More-Connect project deals with the distinct energy, economic and environmental aspects present in the complex field of building refurbishment, through the development of cost-optimal renovation packages to renovate buildings towards achieving NZEB features. Energy renovation of buildings ,NZEB ,Engenharia e Tecnologia::Engenharia Civil - Abstract
Zero or nearly zero energy houses ((n)ZEB) are in fact houses that meet their energy demand by on site production of (renewable) energy, that is, by limiting consumption of fossil fuels and replacing them with local, building-connected generation. There is an ongoing discussion whether energy neutral buildings could sometimes be a better option, namely, the houses that use only renewable energy, which can be produced elsewhere, either in the direct vicinity, or by the classic grid. National power supply systems are also in transition in most countries, and they will eventually shift towards renewable energy production. For the housing sector, however, it has been decided to start as locally as possible, and not to wait until the whole system has been transformed. In some countries, local district heating will still be the major option to explore. This is the starting point in analysing retrofitting concepts for housing. With this in mind, to create zero energy houses, or nearly zero energy houses 4 main areas can be targeted: 1. (Local) production of renewable energy; 2. Reduction of energy loss in buildings; 3. Adaptation of building use; 4. Changing inhabitant behaviour. This book approach focuses mainly on Steps 1 and 2, assuming the usual mode of operations for Steps 3 and 4. Although it might turn out that to reach real zero energy targets and possibly beyond energy plus houses, which, for instance, include energy generation for electric driving, Steps 3 ad 4 might have to be addressed as well. Within Step 3, for instance, there is an option that the heated (or cooled) area should be reduced square wise. Within Step 4, there is an option that average temperature levels are reduced or differentiated among different rooms. In some retrofit concepts, Steps 3 and 4 are already addressed. We will also consider them within ?Concepts? section. The approach focuses mainly on heating and ventilation (cooling), since this energy demand is related to the building itself. Household-related energy use will not be influenced by retrofitting directly. Optimization in energy and materials input will mainly be ensured by optimization of heating/ventilation. If Steps 3 and 4 are left out, household energy is a set demand that can be supplied by the related given amount of extra energy generation. This will be shortly addressed in Chapters 2 and 3C., EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation H2020 under grant agreement No 633477

Nowadays, in the European Union the construction rate of new buildings is very low and therefore achieving the EU targets at the energy consumption level of the building sector is only possible through nearly zero energy renovation of the existing building stock. Reducing energy consumption through passive measures is a priority but this is not enough to achieve the nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) level. Therefore, the active systems, namely those that allow harvesting the solar energy to partially replace the use of non-renewable energy, are one of the best solutions to consider. At this level, solar thermal and photovoltaic panels play an important role, mainly in countries with high levels of solar radiation, as in the Southern European countries. Nevertheless, there are still some barriers to overcome for the broader dissemination of the implementation of these systems. One of the most important is that building owners are not fully aware of the life-cycle benefits that systems have at the economic level. As in every new different design approach, the best way to arise awareness is through the analysis of case studies, highlighting the reduced life-cycle costs and potential environmental impacts and other long-term benefits resulting from the integration of these active solutions. Thus, this paper is aimed at assessing the contribution of the solar systems to achieve three levels of energy performance (Basic Renovation, nearly Zero Energy Buildings - nZEB and Zero Energy Buildings - ZEB) in the energy renovation of a multifamily building located in Portugal. From the results, it is possible to conclude that, on an annual basis, and for the Portuguese climate, it is possible to overcome, a large amount of the energy needs for acclimatization and domestic hot water preparation with the integration of these systems. The study also shows attractive cost and carbon payback times resulting from their use., info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

The social and environmental urgency of large-scale integrated retrofitting of the European residential building stock is widely acknowledged and supported by all Member States. However, the European building sector is currently still not able to offer an integral solution for deep renovation toward nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) for reasonable costs. MORE-CONNECT project aims to tackle this issue by developing cost optimal solutions to renovate buildings towards nZEB. In this project, the optimal solutions include the development of prefabricated, multifunctional renovation elements for the total building envelope (façade and roof) and installation/building services. This paper presents the first stage of the project, namely the analysis and comparison of three scenarios following the current national requirements in Portugal i) 80% reduction of the current primary energy consumption of the building, ii) cost optimal solution (nZEB) and iii) net zero energy (NZEB). The optimization of the building envelope will be the main driver for the three scenarios as well as the inclusion of renewable energy strategies. Overall, results suggest that it is possible to achieve cost-effective solutions for the renovation of Portuguese residential buildings. Moreover, the cost-optimal solution (scenario ii) matches approximately with the 80% reduction of energy scenario (scenario i)., MORE-CONNECT is funded by the European Commission within the framework of the Horizon 2020 program

The Portuguese socio-economic context of the last decades of XX century led to a great investment by the construction industry in new construction. This tendency continued even after the number of buildings had largely overcome the number of families. Nowadays, there are in Portugal more 45% of dwellings than families. On the other hand, the existing buildings were several times built without a proper consideration of important issues, such as thermal comfort, acoustic comfort, ventilation needs, natural lighting, among many others. For these reasons, many Portuguese buildings have big retrofitting needs. This study intends to present a statistical analysis of the Portuguese residential buildings retrofitting needs. Additionally, it was intended to study in what extent the retrofitting works currently being carried out overcome these needs. This analysis was made based on collected data from a survey responded by construction companies operating in Portugal., Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and POPH/FSE-MCTES for the financial support for this study under Reference SFRH/BD/112703/2015

Following the impact of the climate changes and their causes, buildings proved to be one of the main responsible for the greenhouse effect due to the carbon emissions related with their construction and use. The recent changes in the European regulations, in a tentative to improve buildings energy performance, are mostly suited to new buildings. However, the majority of the building stock has more than twenty years and renovating it, in accordance with the current standards, can lead to difficult and expensive procedures. Considering the main goals of reducing the use of fossil fuels and the related emissions, the use of renewable energy sources offers an alternative to these deep interventions in the buildings envelope. In a search for the right balance between energy conservation and energy efficiency measures and technologies that require the use of renewable energy, IEA EBC launched Annex 56. The main purpose of the project is the development of a methodological framework that allows comparing renovation scenarios that deeply reduce energy and carbon emissions combining energy efficiency measures and the use of renewable energy. It takes into consideration not only the reduction of the energy use, carbon emissions reductions and costs, but also embodied energy and co-benefits that arise from the renovation procedure. The methodology was applied to a Portuguese case-study that has gone under renovation. The results allow comparing the chosen renovation scenario with other scenarios and justify the option of going beyond the cost optimal solutions in order to have more effective reduction of the carbon emission while still being cost effective.

The recast of the energy performance of buildings directive stipulates that by 2020 all new buildings should reach nearly zero energy levels (2019 for buildings owned or occupied by public authorities). Therefore technicians involved in the design, conception and approval of such buildings should be able to understand and apply nearly zero energy buildings (nZEB) concepts both towards new buildings and the refurbishment of existing ones. However the number of architects and engineers that are able to deal with new technologies and standards might not be adequate to the increasing market demand. Additionally, at European Union (EU) level there are differences in commitment to the EU targets and the construction of nZEB. In this context, arose the SouthZEB project, that is an Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE) funded project, that aims to fill this gap and address the need to develop training schemes to professionals involved in nZEB building process, transferring successful practices and knowledge from front runners to target Southern EU countries that are less advanced in this area. This paper presents the project aims and overview.

Nowadays, the sustainability of buildings has an extreme importance. This concept goes towards the European aims of the Program Horizon 2020, which concerns about the reduction of the environmental impacts through such aspects as the energy efficiency and renewable technologies, among others. Sustainability is an extremely broad concept but, in this work, it is intended to include the concept of sustainability in buildings. Within the concept that aims the integration of environmental, social and economic levels towards the preservation of the planet and the integrity of the users, there are, currently, several types of tools of environmental certification that are applicable to the construction industry (LEED, BREEAM, DGNB, SBTool, among others). Within this context, it is highlighted the tool SBTool (Sustainable Building Tool) that is employed in several countries and can be subject to review in institutions of basic education, which are the base for the formation of the critical masses and for the development of a country. The main aim of this research is to select indicators that can be used in a methodology for sustainability assessment (SBTool) of school buildings in Portugal and in Brazil. In order to achieve it, it will also be analyzed other methodologies that already incorporate parameters directly related with the schools environment, such as BREEAM or LEED.

The importance of implementing sustainable practices in buildings is duly proved and understood by the majority of the population. However, its implementation is not yet a reality. Some studies have been performed with the goal of understand this lack of use of sustainable solutions, among building sector stakeholders. The conclusion is that one of the main factors contributing to this is related with economic constraints. Several studies have proven that many sustainable practices correspond to minor costs than traditional practices in a life cycle perspective. However, the building sector stakeholders are not aware of this and do not implement sustainable practices commonly.

Housing Envelopes ,Portugal ,Engenharia e Tecnologia::Engenharia Civil ,Energy Retrofitting ,Sustainable Retrofitting - Abstract
The Portuguese housing sector experienced a significant growth throughout the 20th century, particularly in the last quarter, after the democratic revolution in 1974. In fact, the number of buildings built between 1970 and 1990 is more than one third of the buildings actually existing in Portugal. Therefore most of them were built before the publication of the first regulation concerning the energy efficiency in buildings. Regarding this scenario, it would be expected that rehabilitation activities would represent most of the current construction activities. However, given some remaining barriers from old social policies, this situation is not observed; actually building retrofitting is the least significant sector, accentuating the degradation level of major part of the Portuguese housing stock. Several studies show that the main problems are found in the buildings envelope elements, such as roofs and façades. Based on this context, the aim of this paper is to introduce some examples of building retrofitting systems that, adapted to the Portuguese main needs and requirements may represent sustainable solutions to overcome the identified needs of Portuguese buildings' envelope.

Buildings are one of the major consumers of energy in Europe. This makes them an important target when aiming to reduce the energy consumptions and carbon emissions. The majority of the European building stock has already some decades and so it needs renovation in order to keep its functionality. Taking advantage of these interventions, the energy performance of the buildings may also be improved. In Portugal the renovation techniques, both regarding energy efficiency measures as well as measures for the use of renewable energy sources, are normally planned at the building scale. It is important to explore the possibility of having large scale interventions, has it has been done in other countries, namely at neighbourhood scale with district energy system in order to optimize the results in terms of costs and environmental impact.

Wind tunnel tests are a reliable tool to determine the effect of natural ventilation on buildings. This paper presents results of wind tunnel tests conducted to evaluate the influence of ventilation modules positioning on a façade system. Modules positioning was modified, resulting in different façade configurations. The tests were carried out with the use of a model, varying the position of the ventilation modules in the façade configuration. The cases tested were six ventilation modules positioned below the window-sill (ventilated window-sill), and three ventilation modules positioned above and below the façade. The façade system proposed was movable and interchangeable so that the same basic model could be used to test the possibilities for ventilation. Wind speed measurements were taken inside and outside the model for the different façades configurations to evaluate the best performance in relation to natural ventilation. Singleâ sided and Cross ventilation were considered for wind speed measurements. Results show the use of six ventilation modules positioned below the window-sill, forming "a ventilated window-sill" is the best solution in terms of natural ventilation.

With the objective of fostering the energy efficiency of the building sector as well as of the integration of renewable energy sources, the adoption of near Zero Energy Buildings ( nZEB) concepts (buildings that have a very high energy performance) in new and in existing buildings, is currently being promoted by the SouthZEB project. This Project, initiated in March 2014, is developing, in 30 months, certified training modules targeted towards engineers, architects, municipality technicians and decision makers in Southern European countries, including Portugal. Training modules definition considers the experience and know-how of the front-runner countries (Austria, UK and Northern Italy) participating in the project, but are also based on the counselling of representatives of the main nZEB stakeholders in each of the Southern European countries partnering the SouthZEB project (Portugal, Italy, Greece and Cyprus), the so-called SouthZEB National Support Groups. This paper, first, elaborates on the nZEB concept and its adoption evolution in Europe. Secondly, it focuses on the need for professional training, which has been a barrier encountered in nZEB progress in Southern European countries. Finally, the paper presents the certified training development methodology followed by the SouthZEB project, with a particular focus in the Portuguese experience., SouthZEB Project is co-funded by the Intelligent Energy Europe Programme of the European Union IEE/13/393/SI2.675576 and the sole responsibility for the content of this paper lies within the authors.

Improving energy efficiency in existing buildings is a great challenge. These buildings have their own limitations related with their design, location and function. To study the possibilities of cost-effectively improve the thermal performance of these buildings and increase the chances of reaching the nearly zero energy (nZEB) target, one building of Rainha Dona Leonor neighbourhood has been analysed. The purpose of the study was to analyse the robustness of the cost optimal methodology when renovating towards nZEB targets. With this work it was possible to understand that the most cost effective package of renovation measures to achieve cost optimal levels and to achieve the nZEB target are very similar and these results do not suffer major changes when variations on the energy prices, discount rates or photovoltaic (PV) costs are considered. However, these changes make the use of PV more cost-effective and nZEB levels become, sometimes, also cost optimal levels.

The use of Trombe wall and the double self-cleaning glass in the façade point towards a signi! cant decrease of heating energy needs. The great majority of the façades combinations presented energy needs lower than the maximum allowed by the Portuguese regulation (RCCTE)., Esta investigación aborda el estudio de fachadas con cristales de altas prestaciones y muros Trombe.

Portuguese school buildings are generally characterized by an in-service thermal discomfort, due to the poor envelope thermal properties and the lack of resources for paying energy consumption. Portuguese schools are free-running buildings in a Mediterranean temperate climate, with a natural ventilation strategy. The constructive records of the past describe the existence of typified projects for school buildings replicated throughout the country, without the necessary adaptations to the particular climatic situation. Likewise, the replication of solutions in rehabilitation projects, without taking into account the climatic reality, will have repercussions on the hygrothermal environment inside the classrooms. This work studies the Portuguese Brandao basic schools (from the‘70s). About 100 non-refurbished Brandao schools will require some interventions in the near future. A prototype classroom was prepared in a Brandao school, in Porto. With this prototype, some studies were carried out regarding the thermal behavior before and after a refurbishment process, by experimental monitoring. The in situ experimental campaign consisted of temperature, relative humidity, CO concentration and energy consumption measurements. This extended experimental campaign (three academic years) was a crucial tool to validate an advanced dynamic hygrothermal model of Heat, Air and Moisture transfer-Wufi Plus. The calibration process consisted of comparing and minoring differences between experimental and numerical results of temperature. Given the duration of an experimental campaign like this and also the cost of the prototype, it was important to dominate and improve the numerical model that replies the in situ conditions and allows the studying of the other Portuguese Brandao buildings. This paper presents the temperature validation of this model in three distinct situations: (1) before refurbishment without heating, (2) after refurbishment without heating and (3) after refurbishment with heating. The main inputs were climatic dat, This work was financially supported by: UID/ECI/04708/2019- CONSTRUCT - Instituto de I&D em Estruturas e Construções funded by national funds through the FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC). Diferentes estruturas e preenchimento foram testadas em laboratório para otimização energética e mecânica., Energy renovation of buildings is now a concern at the European level, essential to support the necessary energy transition to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. An efficient way to reduce the amount of carbon emissionsin the building sector is to reduce its energy needs. Improving energy efficiency through thermal insulation is one of the most efficient solutions, and on the other hand, the rate of energy renovation of Europe's building stock has been slow - below 1% per year. In addition, Portugal has been pointed out as one of the most vulnerable countries in the European Union in terms of energy poverty. Economically, the costs associated with a renovation are much lower than the costs of demolition and subsequent reconstruction. The envelope of a building represents an important part of it in terms of ensuring a certain level of comfort, and for this reason it is necessary that they are renovated and kept up to date over time. According to Oktavia & Kususma (2020), a correct selection of the material component of the façade of a building is one of the most important decisions that must be made, even at an early stage of its design, because it is this material that will be in contact with the external environment. Globally, more than three hundred million tons of plastic are produced, and Europe is the second largest producer of this material. In Portugal, low recycling rates - only one third of post-consumer plastic waste is recycled - aggravate environmental problems and represent a significant waste of resources. Therefore, it is urgent to reduce plastic waste by integrating it into value chains for reuse and recycling. Faced with these two impending problems, additive manufacturing may be a solution that suits both, as it can contribute to the renovation of buildings using plastic waste. By controlling the internal geometry and different fill combinations, 3D printing enables optimization of thermal conductivity and mechanical performance. Based on the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) method this work analyzes the thermal performance of a set of 3D printed specimens with PET-G thermoplastic. Different structures and fill were tested in the laboratory for energy and mechanical optimization.

Considering that a large part of the Portuguese building stock was built decades ago, and the current thermal regulation is not met, these buildings are usually characterized by poor thermal performance and high energy consumption needs. Thus, there is a need to replace renovate them to present a better thermal performance, by consuming less energy and at the same time guaranteeing the minimum comfort conditions for users, in a sustainable way. Considering the pillars of sustainability, it is necessary to include in this analysis, in addition to the social and environmental spheres, the economic aspect, which is an even more delicate point in the case of populations with less financial conditions. For that, this study will use the cost-optimal methodology to define the best proposal for energy renovation for a social neighbourhood located in Braga, northern Portugal. Typical solutions used in the country will be studied, encompassing not only passive measures but also technical systems and the use of renewable energies, the latter being essential for obtaining nZEB levels, in addition to the objective optimal cost. The combination of rehabilitation measures was able to achieve a reduction of up to 95% in terms of primary energy, compared to the reference scenario. A dynamic energy simulation will be the method of energy quantification used for the study and will be done using EnergyPlus through DesignBuilder's graphical interface. This method uses weather files that are normally generated based on data obtained from meteorological stations in each region. However, considering the projections of climate change and the predicted increase in global temperature, there is an expectation that the thermal behavior of buildings will change, warning about the need to analyse the robustness and resilience of the proposed energy renovation solutions. To consider these changes, the study will use future climate files for 2020 and 2050, converted through the CCWorldWeatherGen tool that considers the A2 emissions scenario. After adapting the conventional methodology, the results showed a new cost-optimal graph with similar behavior to the first one, with a reduction of up to 94% in terms of primary energy for the tested renovation proposals, concerning the reference scenario, presenting, however, higher proportional global costs.

Dissertação de mestrado em Sustainable Built Environment, The building stock is responsible for 40% of the energy consumption and 36% of greenhouse gas emissions in Europe. The European Energy Performance of Building Directive (EPBD) established instructions to promote building energy performance to mitigate this problem. Since its first publication in 2002, energy efficiency has been increasingly promoted. In particular, the 2010 recast introduced the nearly zero energy building concept (nZEB), a cost-effective building with low energy demand while having most of its energy demand supplied by renewable energy sources (RES). The procedure for developing a nZEB building includes a cost-optimal assessment of the elements and systems of the buildings, which is the cost-effective comparison between reference building solutions and the proposed building solutions. The cost-optimal assessment has fomented researches aiming to find more cost-effective and energy-efficient building solutions. Furthermore, building methods such as modular and offsite construction have been studied for their possible contribution to increasing cost-effectiveness, energy efficiency, and sustainability. In this context, this study focused on developing a modular solution for the external walls to be used in prefabricated housing. The methodology developed in this dissertation includes developing a catalogue for existing modular solutions, designing the studied building, simulating, and optimizing results, and the cost-optimal analysis of the achieved results for a single-family housing. The data was gathered through a Building Energy Model (BEM) analysis in the software Design-Builder running the Energy-Plus engine simulation. The cost-optimal analysis was performed by comparing different combinations of optimised external envelope options and building solutions. The study analysis shows that an external building envelope can be achieved with lower initial and global costs and lower energy needs than traditional construction. This study shows that the cost-optimal solution for the designed building is a light steel frame panel with an MDF wood façade panel of 22mm, an internal OSBIII panel of 15mm and 90mm Mineral wool insulation material., O ambiente construído é responsável por 40% da energia consumida e 36% das emissões de gases com efeito de estufa na Europa.

Dissertação de mestrado em Sustainable Built Environment, The building sector is one of the major contributors to energy demand and greenhouse gases emissions within cities and, at the same time, it has one of the largest cost-effective energy saving and emissions reduction potential. In this regard, renovation projects at a neighbourhood scale instead of building level are believed to present several benefits that allow getting more profitable and efficient solutions. In this context, the dissertation work sought to develop a methodology to define reference buildings that allows evaluating energy saving measures at a neighbourhood scale for a social housing context in Portugal. The accuracy of the method was assessed by comparing the energy performance of the neighbourhood, using in one case just the reference buildings while in the other the existing buildings. For the definition of the reference buildings, a cluster analysis - which is a multivariate statistical analysis technique that groups cases with very similar characteristics into a cluster – was used. For the energy performance analysis, numerical energy simulations were used. A parametric analysis considering thirteen different energy renovation measures on the building envelope was carried out. The methodology was applied to a case study on a neighbourhood located in Braga, generally designated as “Bairro das Andorinhas”. The results showed small variation differences in the comparison analysis at a neighbourhood level for both heating and cooling energy demand, reaching maximum variations of 4.9% and 3.4% respectively. The examination of each cluster demonstrated that the heating demand had, in general, a much larger gap than the cooling demand in terms of variation between detailed calculations of the existing buildings and the reference buildings. In addition, the maximum variation for the cluster oriented East- West was found on the wall intervention measures while in the clusters oriented North- South was on the roof and windows. Finally, the use of reference buildings seems to be a viable approach to evaluate energy saving measures at a neighbourhood scale due to the level of accuracy level of the method.

In view of the high energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of the existing buildings stock, there is, as consequence, the need to promote policies that provide an improvement of their energy performance. In this perspective, the retrofitting of existing buildings and the increase of their energy efficiency are of fundamental importance for achieving the objectives defined in terms of sustainable development. In 2010, with the EPBD recast, the European Commission took a very demanding position in this regard, establishing the concept of nearly zero-energy buildings (nZEB), which are characterized as buildings with high energy performance and low energy needs, sustained by renewable energy sources, preferably produced on site or neaby. In terms of energy retrofitting of existing buildings, there is evidence that an intervention at the group of buildings level can bring significant advantages from the point of view of a combination between energy efficiency measures and renewable energy supply, in addition to the possibility of obtaining economies of scale. Thus, the objective of the development of this dissertation is the definition of a methodology for the assessment of the scale effect on the retrofitting interventions cost-effectiveness, towards the nZEB objective. As an additional objective, the research also aims to determine the cost-optimal packages of renovation solutions at the neighbourhood level, in order to take advantage of the potential synergies between the measures to be adopted in the different retrofitting scenarios. With regard to the development of the methodology, a group of buildings was selected in the context of a social housing as a case study - The Neighbourhood of Santa Tecla in Braga. The study was carried out through the use of a representative typology (building unit with most representation in the neighbourhood) and subsequent evaluation of its energy and financial performance in order to support the transition to the group of buildings level. The results, arising from the application of the methodology, suggest that an integrated intervention that includes retrofitting measures in the envelope, air conditioning systems and renewable energy sources is extremely advantageous and cost-effective when compared to the reference intervention. For a private perspective, in order to support the selection of solutions, in the calculations made for the representative typology developed for this study, the intervention that contemplates an ETICS solution with EPS of 60 mm, double glazed windows with PVC frames and the set of S3 systems (heat pump) is the cost-optimal solution. When considering an intervention in the group of buildings, the calculations suggest that the cost-optimal solution is the same envelope and window solution with the S3 system, verifying that the intervention at the group of buildings level allowed a reduction of global costs of around 46% due to the alteration of technical systems and consequent decrease in their quantities, and also to the economies of scale provided by the purchase of high quantity of materials used in solutions of exterior walls and windows.

The existing European buildings are responsible for 40% of the energy consumption, posing a major challenge in the sustainable development of cities. In order to mitigate this problem, the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) introduced the concept of nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB), which is based on high energy performance buildings with the integration of renewable energy sources harvested on site within costeffectiveness criteria. Social housing buildings are paradigmatic of buildings that often present pathologies due to poor construction quality and low energy efficiency. There is this a pressing need to intervene in this type of buildings. In order to reach the nZEB level in this type of buildings, interventions should include improvements on the envelope and technical systems and production of renewable energy on site, considering not only the energy savings provided but also the global costs over the entire life cycle of the building. In this context, the research carried out analysed possible renovation scenarios to be implemented in a social housing building in Braga, using the cost-optimal methodology in order to reach the nZEB level. Initially, solutions just for the building envelope were analysed. In a second phase, these measures were combined into renovation packages with different technical systems. In the end, the renovation packages also included the integration of renewable energy sources. The study shows that there is a potential to cost-effectively reduce non-renewable primary energy (NRPE) up to 100%. The cost-optimal solution led to a 94% reduction in NRPE and to a 54% reduction in global costs when compared to the reference case renovation. The costoptimal solution consists of an integrated intervention considering the improvement of the façade (through the application of a prefabricated modular panel) and roof insulation, double glazing windows and a combination of systems that include domestic hot water preparation, a HVAC system and photovoltaic panels. The results of this study contribute to the discussion on how to achieve the goals set by the European Union (EU), the way forward to reach the nZEB and even ZEB buildings, and the opportunity to help mitigating the energy poverty problem associated to this type of buildings.

Smart windows, especially those electric-driven, represent one of the most advanced technologies for controlling solar radiation. For a correct use, it is necessary to understand their real behaviour through in-situ measurements on full-scale application as well as calibrating and validating visual simulation models capable of predicting their performances. In this paper, the preliminary results of current research activities aimed at developing simulation models of electric-driven full-scale glazing are presented. The research activities started with the assessment of the visible solar transmittance as a function of light incident angle through in-situ measurements; different models, with related values, of the visible solar transmittance were considered. For each simulation model, the corresponding transmittance value was set in the RADIANCE ?trans? material model and the simulated illuminance values, for a defined acquisition point of a test-facility, were then compared with the experimental data. Finally, for each model, indoor luminance distributions were reported considering a typical office seating position. Preliminary results, based on the in-situ measurements approach, highlighted a sufficient accuracy for one of the models adopted; further analyses are needed in order to upgrade the simulation models available and assess the effective performances of these windows., info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

In 2011, the number of accommodations in Portugal overcame in 45% the number of families, being that about 32% of the existing accommodations were secondary residences or they were unoccupied. Moreover, the buildings are responsible for a very significant percentage of pollutant emissions that contribute for the greenhouse effect as well as the energy consumed, due to their energy needs. Thus, it is imperative to proceed with the rehabilitation of the existing stock in detriment of the new construction. This paradigm shift will contribute to a more sustainable development of the construction sector, a valuation of our heritage, as well as an improvement in the thermal comfort of the occupants of the buildings. This study intends to identify, evaluate and analyze constructive materials and solutions applicable in rehabilitation situations that aim to improve thermal comfort and energy performance of buildings, together with a reduced life cycle cost. For that, a market research was carried out in order to identify the construction solutions and their technical characteristics to be simulated later in the EnergyPlus numerical simulation software, as well as evaluated according to a multicriteria analysis based on the MARS-SC methodology. In this way, it was possible to evaluate the thermal, energy and economic performance of each construction solution individually, but also to conjugate some solutions simultaneously according to rehabilitation scenarios proposals. It is hoped that this work will contribute positively and significantly, not only to rehabilitation works but also to new works, for the selection of constructive solutions on the part of the designers who wish to simultaneously provide an optimization of the energy, thermal performance and economic development of the building, aiming also for a more sustainable rehabilitation.

The building sector is one of the largest energy consumers and consequently as a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, knowingly that there is a great need for renovation of the housing stock, it is possible to affirm that renovation plays a decisive role in improvement of the energy efficiency and a way of developing a safe and sustainable economy. The present work main objective was the optimization of the renovation solutions of a multi-family building, located in Vila Nova de Gaia (Portugal). The different renovation measures implemented aim to obtain an efficient building at a reduced cost. A cost optimal approach was carried out while the feasibility of three different scenarios was considered: 80% energy needs reduction compared to the initial situation, reaching the nZEB (nearly Zero Energy Building) and ZEB (Zero Energy Building) levels. Initially, the thermal performance of the building current situation was evaluated using the methodology defined in the Portuguese thermal regulation. Different renovation solutions of the envelope were defined and their impact in the building’s energy efficiency was analyzed. Different technical systems were also defined based on their efficiencies and availability in the market. Finally, the potential contribute of renewable energy sources (solar thermal and photovoltaic systems) was also evaluated. The analysis of the wide range of renovation measures defined for the building allowed to obtain a set of optimum cost solutions. It was possible to reach the ZEB level and, although the nZEB is not yet quantitatively defined in Portugal, it is possible to reach this efficiency level since several solutions potentiate reductions in the energy needs around 90% and 95% compared to the initial situation.

As concerns related to these subjects increase, applying measures to reduce the environmental footprint become a greater need. So, to achieve sustainable grow, the social, economic and environmental factors must be balanced. Moreover, sustainability is the key word in cutting hedge thinking regarding construction, it symbolises the equilibrium amongst economic viability, social adequacy and environmental respect. Several economic indexes reveal a crisis in the construction sector, as a result of a national and international economic crisis. In Portugal, the room for new construction is overcrowded and the housing stock shows clear signs of degradation and low efficiency levels in resources usage. Therefore, housing rehabilitation is a great market alternative to cope with a sector in crisis, never disregarding the environmental, social and economic indexes. Thus, is important to highlight the concept, it responds to the increasing needs of the building owners and allows expansion of resources life cycle, assuring sustainability for future generations. It is perceivable the general unawareness of the sustainable rehabilitation concept and its advantages. To measure the concept scope, the subject wideness was studied and analysed, from different sustainable construction solutions to its average cost and its viability, considering the society economic status and final users investment will. Increasing society awareness about the costs and benefits, will allow solution applications which promote a steady interaction of environmental, social and economic dimensions. The present dissertation revealed owners greater will and availability to invest when they achieve higher benefits in distinct dimensions. Highlighting economic and social dimensions and within these indicators, such as operational energy costs and indoors thermal comfort.

The Buildings sector is central to the energy efficiency strategy of the EU. The sector is responsible for 40% of the energy consumption and 36% of the CO2 emissions in all of Europe. Improving the energetic performance of the european building stock is thus crucial to achieve the 20/20/20 goal, but also to fulfil the long term goals of the european climate strategy for a low carbon economy by 2050. Despite the almost unanimous acknowledgment of the enormous potential of building renovation measures to improve energy efficiency, their implementation has been slow due to the short sighted vision of decision makers and owner alike. Those consider (mainly) as counterparts, inherent to the investment of building renovation measures to improve energy efficiency, the savings from a lower energy consumption and energy costs (direct effects), neglecting all other relevant benefits also called co-benefits as the general improvement of building quality, improve the well-being of the occupants, etc.The full benefits of building rehabilitation are underestimated, namely on the financial (Ürge-Vorsatz, Novikova, & Sharmina, 2009), social and environmental level (IEA, 2012). This underestimation has repercussion to building residents and the wide economic system. Thus, the present dissertation was developed with the goal of evaluating the co-benefits of an energy rehabilitation through surveys as well as with environmental parameters measurements (relative humidity, ambient temperature and acoustic) that support the analysis of the survey results, using a case study in which a set of buildings has undergone energy rehabilitation works (Vila d'Este). The results obtained by the subjective evaluation of the residents (surveys) as well as the measurement of environmental parameters showed that it in fact residents of the analyzed rehabilitated buildings recognize the beneficial effects of the set of energy rehabilitation measures implemented beyond the direct benefits. This reflects the importance of promoting the integration of co-benefits of energy rehabilitation in the decision process.

The construction sector is responsible for much of the extraction of materials, while contributing very significantly to the environmental impacts affecting the planet. Therefore the concept sustainable construction is gaining importance and the energy efficiency in buildings become one of the fundamental aspects either in new construction or in buildings’ rehabilitation. It is in this context there is a the need for a methodology that allows assessing both the energy needs of a building and the related environmental impacts, since the most preliminary stages of design. Based in a methodology called “Methodology for the integrated analysis of environmental impacts and the energy performance of energy rehabilitation scenarios of buildings", previously developed in a research work, this thesis is aimed at: i) verifying the reliability of the methodology previously developed through its application to a case study located in different climate locations; ii) to study the relation between the global warming potential and the operational energy consumption for various rehabilitation scenarios. This analysis is aimed at assessing, for different insulation materials and acclimatization and hot water preparation equipment, the rehabilitation scenario that optimizes the relation between global warming potential emission and operational energy consumption. In order to assess the influence of the climate context in the results, it is considered that the case study building is located in four different Portuguese cities, covering all areas of possible climate combinations. This study follows the studies developed before in the research center and until now there are no studied published in the same field. There are only similar studies that relate the cost of different rehabilitation scenario with life-cycle energy consumption.

Over the last century and due to the exponential population growth worlwide, the construction industry has undergone major changes that contributed in large scale to the excessive consumption of natural resources, ecosystem degradation, excessive waste generation, air pollution and consequent degradation of the planet. As a result, there is currently a large dependency on fossil fuels, which together with the high demand of energy of the construction industry, led to an external energy dependency in the EU. In this context, efforts have been made to reduce the impact of the construction industry on the deterioration of the planet and external energy dependency, being the decrease in energy consumption and the change of energy sources used in the buildings an essential part of the solution. As such, energy rehabilitation is assumed as a fundamental piece for reducing energy consumption. It is crucial to study the energy rehabilitation not only as a mean of achieving higher profitability, but also in order to achieve more adequate primary energy consumption levels in response to future requirements. This work has as main purpose the evaluation of the best energy efficiency measures in construction industry obtained under the application of the European methodology for the calculation of cost optimal levels. This study used the methodology for the calculation of cost optimal solutions in residential multifamily buildings. With this methodology, the cost optimal solutions, the energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in multifamily building were obtained. So, the goal to achieve with this study was the identification of the cost optimal levels of profitability in the energy performance of some multifamily buildings in Portugal.

The requirements for thermal comfort in buildings have been increasing, with a visible impact on costs and on issues related to climate change. The solutions used on energy rehabilitation of buildings already allow a significant reduction of energy required to assure comfort, but they could be optimized if incorporating passive solar techniques. The aim of this work is to develop a passive solar solution with acceptable costs and easy to implement that could be applied in buildings rehabilitation. The aim is to develop an innovative and cost-effective product that can be attached to existing buildings envelope performing as a thermal storage wall that will improve indoor comfort and will reduce energy consumption in renovated buildings.

This study was conducted in order to analyze, at national level, the measures that can improve the energy efficiency of single-family buildings in a renovation process, and determine their long-term economic viability. After this analysis, the aim is to create a ranking that will facilitate decision making on the choice of the most cost-effective measures that can be implemented. First, it was chosen the areas of the country to be studied, taking into account factors such as zones with high urban density, climatic zones and zones with higher demand in buildings renovation. After the selection of areas / cities to be analyzed, some virtual reference buildings were built, representing the prevailing characteristics of the real buildings. Various sets of energy systems were selected, which would be the object of study in each zone / building type. These sets would then be analyzed according to a comparison between the building type and the same building with the implementation of energy efficiency improvement measures like envelope insulation or change of windows. For such, it was used the methodology of the Portuguese thermal regulation in force (REH), particularly in what concerns the calculation of the primary energy needs. These energy needs are important for the determination of energy costs resulting from the implementation of longterm measures. These costs, together with investment costs related to the improvement measures considered, and maintenance costs, were calculated for each type of building in each climatic zone analyzed and taking into account different building systems. To obtain the cost-effectiveness of the renovation measure, it was calculated the difference between the costs of a reference building and the building with the application of the renovation measure. Finally, after calculating the cost-effectiveness of all renovation measures considered in this study, a ranking of measures was created. This ranking is useful as it points out the most costeffective measures for each type of building and for each zone considered in the study.

Finalmente conclui-se sobre quais as variantes mais vantajosas a nível de custo/beneficio a utilizar na reabilitação de edifícios de habitação com as mesmas características do edifício de referência, típicas da construção anterior ao ano 1960 em Portugal., Currently, in the buildings sector, there is a 40% consumption of total energy in the EU and with the continued growth of this sector, there is an increase for energy consumption and it is therefore necessary to implement measures for the reduction of consumption, improving the efficiency in its use and using renewable sources to reduce energy dependency and emissions of greenhouse gases. In this way, European Directive 2010/31/EU of May 19, 2010 on the energy performance of buildings (EPBD recast) introduces important steps required to reduce EU energy dependency and emissions of greenhouse gases. With the EPBD Recast Member States shall ensure that minimum energy performance requirements are assured with good profitability levels, i.e. with minimum cost considering the entire life cycle. This thesis aims to determine the cost optimal levels of the minimum energy performance requirements in the renovation of a reference single-family building that represents the Portuguese construction before 1960, by calculating the cost of implementing energy efficiency measures, as well as the cost of using the building during the estimated economic life cycle. The variation of the cost optimal levels in the renovation of single-family buildings from the chosen period, located in various regions with different climatic conditions is evaluated. The residential building stock in Portugal is characterized and the improvement measures for renovation in are identified, including measures to improve the building envelope and also acting in the building systems for heating, cooling and domestic hot water (DHW). The overall costs associated with each of the combinations of measures to improve the energy performance of the bulding envelope and for the use of different AVAC and DHW systems is quantified, to get the energy performance of the building or the renovated part improved in order to meet minimum energy performance requirements for buildings in order to achieve cost optimal levels. Finally, it is identified the most advantageous combinations in terms of cost / benefit to use in the renovation of residential buildings with the same characteristics of the reference building, typical of pre-1960 construction in Portugal.

Por fim, elaborou-se um manual que auxilia os utilizadores no manuseamento da ferramenta desenvolvida., Construction is one of the main sectors contributing to the increase of the EU economy since it is the sector that generates 10% of GDP and employs more than 13.2 million people. However it is one that consumes greater amounts of natural resources by using energy intensively, generating in turn environmental impacts with a high order of magnitude. It is also responsible for the increased production of solid, liquid and gaseous waste. Under the circumstances there is an urgent need to act from the preliminary design stages of a building in order to meet the environmental impacts and energy performance that are associated with it. In recent years, there have been many rules and regulations on the energy consumption of buildings as well as environmental impacts. Apart from this fact it appears that the rules and regulations have very complex methodologies making it very difficult to placing them into practice. Therefore, and in order to fill these gaps, this thesis developed a methodology for measuring simultaneously the energy consumption and environmental impacts, including carbon emissions arising from different scenarios of rehabilitation of buildings. Since there is no tool developed to address these two issues as one, this work is of great importance and therefore will be apply some of the concepts of "TABULA" project as a starting point, and later added the matching algorithm to cooling and a database for determining which environmental impact associated with the materials and/or construction elements. Subsequently, the methodology was tested through a case study in order to verify its applicability and validity. Finally, I prepared a manual that assists users in handling the tool developed.

The evolution of the constructive techniques has not always been in favour of thermal comfort. In primitive times, man adapted his habitat to the existing conditions through techniques that took into account the local climatic conditions. The industrial revolution, in the mid eighteenth century, brought major technical, economic and social alterations, changing the architecture, cutting the ties with the environment, which led to a substantial increase in energy consumption. In 1973, the excessive power consumption led to an energy crisis, alerting and raising awareness of the abusive use. Inside their houses the occupants, found through the use of HVAC systems (heating, cooling, etc.) the resolution of the problems related to thermal comfort. Currently, there are targets to meet regarding the reduction of greenhouse gases, established by the Kyoto Protocol. This protocol promotes energy efficient new buildings and encourages the existing ones to be improved. In this context, this work consists in the analysis of constructive envelope solutions for houses built before the publication of the first Portuguese building thermal regulation , leading to satisfactory level of thermal comfort. The evaluation of these solutions is done through the identification of hours of discomfort to the occupants, air temperature, relative humidity and average radiant temperature of the interior spaces. This work is divided into three parts. In the first is carried out a framework of the theme; the second part presents the methodology followed and lastly are presented and analyzed the results obtained in the project.

The construction market in Portugal experienced a big evolution with the approval of new regulations and the entrance in the European Economic Community. The rhythm that construction took decreased the Portuguese shortage in houses, but, looking at the current situation of the country and the planet it’s visible that the majority of the buildings require intervention so they can become more efficient and sustainable. However, for the existing buildings, the information concerning the energetic and sustainable rehabilitation it’s almost none existing. In order to mend this situation projects like the Annex 56 have been appearing. Annex 56 wants to develop rules and procedures, as the basis for future standards, enabling cost effective rehabilitation of existing buildings within the international commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and climate change mitigation. This implies rehabilitation towards nearly-zero emission buildings. The Dissertation will address this issue by analyzing a case study with 242 fractions, studying the thermal-energy efficiency and sustainability. The thermal-energy efficiency will be analyzed using the Thermal Performance Building Regulation and the sustainability using SBToolPT-H. Analysis will be made prior to rehabilitation and based on the results rehabilitation proposals will be made and studied in order to illustrate what will be more efficient. In the end it’s intended to achieve a methodology to assist in the decision making process for the rehabilitation project.

Over the last century, due to an exponential population growth, the construction industry has suffered great changes, which had huge influence on the overconsumption of natural resources, the ecosystem degradation, the excessive waste generation, the air pollution and on the earth’s degradation. In addition, there is a major dependence on fossil fuels, which combined with the construction industry high energy needs, has caused an external energy dependence on EU. Whereby efforts have been made towards the restriction of the influence of the construction industry regards the earth’s degradation and the external dependence on energy, with the energy consumption restriction and the energy sources change, on buildings, as a central part of the solution. As such, the energy retrofit has an essential role in such solutions. Therefore, the study of the energy retrofit has an important role not only on the pursuit of the best profitability but also on the restriction of primary energy consumption as a response to the future demands. This thesis has as goal the techno-economic evaluation and characterization of the energy efficiency measures and of the renewable energy production/utilization measures on the energy retrofit of the single family Portuguese building stock for each type of building and for preset levels of energy and carbon emissions.

With the imminent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated in the production of energy consumed by buildings emerged in the European Union two concepts: the concept of cost optimality and nearly zero energy buildings. They are presented as fundamental concepts within current European policies for the energy performance of buildings and reduced consumption of non-renewable resources proposed by the European Union for the year 2050. While the concept of cost optimality is looking forward to establish minimum requirements for energy performance based on costs during the life cycle of the building, the concept of nearly zero energy buildings shows as main objectives to obtain low levels of energy consumption and increase the autonomy of fossil fuels, through the production of renewable energy on site or nearby. However, it should be noted that, alone, the renewable energy becomes untenable when the building has low energy performance. Thus, it is necessary to start by carrying out an improvement of energy efficiency, using new technologies/materials and subsequently produce renewable energy that can make the energy balance close to zero. However, the various improvement measures have a threshold level at which the economic return on the investment ceases to exist, as seen through the concept of cost optimality. Given the above context, this work develops an analysis of the technical and economic feasibility of the implementation in Portugal of residential buildings into nearly zero energy concept by analyzing characteristic Portuguese buildings in different locations and comparing these with the same buildings in a cost optimal perspective without use of renewable energy.

Furthermore, the greater portion of that energy comes from exhaustible resources, such as oil, gas, and coal, which produce greenhouse gases with an enormous environmental impact. Accordingly, EU has presented the Climate-Energy Package where it is defined a series of goals that are to be met until 2020 as well as the Roadmap 2050, with the intention of reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions and turning the European Union into a competitive economy, but also free of emissions until 2050. Considering that buildings are responsible for a great consumption of energy, it becomes essential to invest in them with materials and technologies that promote improvements in their energetic performance. To do so, players in the industry have been developing various solutions, like improving the equipment’ efficiency, using onsite generation of renewable energy, improving the mechanisms of control and automation, and improving the buildings envelope by increasing the insulation level of walls, roofs and pavements and improving the thermal quality of windows. However, and especially in a time when financial resources are scarce, invest in available constructive solutions requires a balance between the results and the necessary financial effort for their implementation, and it is essential to resort to cost/benefit analysis, so that this relationship is optimized and optimal levels of profitability for the rehabilitation operations are found. This dissertation points in that direction, towards the analysis of energetic improvement measures, of the buildings envelope and systems in a cost/benefit perspective, so that one can determine the energetic impact that a solution entails in a building, as well as its cost along its utility period.

This thesis aims to determine the potential and feasibility of using photovoltaic panels in buildings and its urban neighborhood; we analyzed a case study and determined the best solution to this case study. For that were recorded investment cost solutions of various modules with various panels on the market. Subsequently we calculated the economic indicators that allow you to make a feasibility analysis of investment. For this case study it was determined Recovery Period Investment (PRI), Average Rate of Return (TRM) and Absolute Net Value (VAL). In this work, the main components of photovoltaic systems grid connected, are described and analyzed. It also presents the sequence of the main tasks, which constitutes of a methodology suitable to carry out the sizing procedure of grid connected photovoltaic systems power applied to the case study in the district of Porto has demonstrated its effectiveness and appropriateness to the national context. As the buildings are provided with better conditions, such as more luminosity, more equipment, air-conditioning, the power consumption rises to record levels. Meanwhile the cost of energy reaches an unprecedented level due to the increase in standard rate of VAT – from 6% to 23%. As the implementation of energy efficiency measures are not enough to allow the building to come close to the concept of NZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building), this work points out an economically viable solution which aims to the production of sustainable energy through the photovoltaic system, so that it can be possible for the building to supply its own energy, following the most recent Portuguese and European legislation. This study is about “Potential and feasibility of using photovoltaic panels in buildings and its urban neighborhood”, the study conclusions may be implemented in any building, considering that necessary adjustments will have to be made according to both the characteristics of the building and its geographical location.

The importance given to natural resources and how they are used by society and in the construction industry has been growing, though not enough, because its high consumption appears related to the current needs of the population, which seeks to increase the quality levels of life and comfort in their homes. The importance of these factors demonstrates the necessity of applying the principles of sustainable development also to the global cycle of construction. In this perspective, the rehabilitation and reutilization of buildings is an essential part to bring greater sustainability to the sector. In Portugal, however, unlike what happens in most European countries, this is still not the option followed. Add to that the importance of the construction sector for the balance of the economy and you have buildings’ rehabilitation as a window of business opportunity for companies to explore. This investment is part of an unfavorable scenario of oversupply of new construction, misfit’s urban plans that led to urban sprawl and poor and empty urban centers, and to the deterioration of the housing stock. Rehabilitation emerges as a viable alternative to meet the urgent needs of the urban structure, particularly the edified. In this logic it is necessary to create incentive mechanisms for rehabilitation, it is imperative to demonstrate quantifiable data and objectives of all the benefits and co benefits of rehabilitation and its evaluation on a cost-benefit perspective. Post all this, this dissertation went then to prepare an analysis tool for rehabilitation solutions, enabling comparative analysis of different rehabilitation alternatives in a global perspective or strands to integrate the benefits and co benefits of rehabilitation in the decision process.
