Esta investigação apresenta os resultados de um estudo de uma metodologia de cura acelerada. 0 processo de cura utilizado, secagem das amostras a 60°C durante 24h, mostrou-se plenamente satisfatório podendo ser utilizado no laboratório. As variáveis investigadas foram teor de umidade de compactação e quantidade de emulsão asfáltica catiônica Estas variáveis foram estabelecidas através da medida das seguintes propriedades: peso unitário, absorção, resistência à compressão simples e resistência ã tensão de tração indireta. trabalho mostra que o teor ótimo de umidade para máxima massa especifica aparente seca foi muito aproximada do teor ótimo de umidade para máxima resistência. E também mostrado que a porcentagem ótima de emulsão asfáltica pode ser determinada usando-se somente o critério da resistência máxima, pois os valores de absorção foram muito pequenos para os casos estudados, sendo inferiores aos máximos comumente utj_lizados por outros investigadores. Lack of appropriate testing procedures and design methods for local conditions are still the main drawbacks for the efficient utilization of soi1-asphaltic emulsion systems inflexible pavement construction. This investigationpresents the results of an study in which an accelerated testing procedure was deveioped and used. Three soils from the region north east were selected as representative of the local variations and used for the study. The variables investigated were compaction moisture content and quantity of cationic asphaltic emulsion.These variables were assessed by measuring the following selected engineering properties. Unit weight, absorption, unconfined compressive strenght and indirect tensile strength. The study shows that the optimum moisture content for maximum dry unit weight approximates very closely the optimum moisture content for maximum strength, it also shows that the optimum percentage of asphaltic emulsion may be determined using only the criterium of maximum strength since the values of absorption were in very case very small and far below of the maximumvalues commonly used by other investigators.

As "amostras indeformadas" foram retira das do subsolo pelo uso de tubos de parede fina sem costura conhecidos por tubos tipo "Shelby". Os resultados dos ensaios de laboratório foram obtidos com amostras retiradas ao longo da camada de argila orgânica com intervalos de 1,0 metro. Os ensaios, teor de umidade de campo, limites de Atterberg, análise granulométrica , área específica , pH, composição mineralógica, adensamento e triaxial não consolidado não drenado, permitiram não somente o estudo do solo em função da profundidade mas também sua caracterização. O estudo mostra que a homogeneidade e uniformidade da "argila orgânica" é provavelmente função da variação do teor de matéria orgânica. O solo é caracterizado como uma "argila orgânica" com baixo teor de matéria orgânica finalmente dividida, apresentando alta plasticidade, composta predominantemente do argilo-mineral caulinita, normalmente adensada e de baixa sensibilidade. Análise de regressão linear foi usada para explorar possíveis correlações entre os valores dos diferentes ensaios realizados. Isto mostra que, dentro das limitações do estudo, existem correlações entre os parâmetros medidos. Propõe-se que estas correlações sejam usadas preliminarmente para avaliar as propriedades de engenhar i d do solo estudado. The purpose of this dissertation was to study some physico-chemical and engineering properties of an "organic clay" which forms part of the soil profile underlying the city of Recife. Undisturbed specimens were recovered from the subsoil by the use of seamless, thin walled steel tubes known as "Shelby type tubes". Results during the laboratory testing programme were obtained from specimens recovered at 1 m intervals along the depth of the organic clay strata. Field moisture content, Atterberg limits, grain size distribution, specific gravity, specific surface, pH, minera1ogica1 analysis, consolidation and unconsolidated undrained triaxiol tests allowed not only the study of the soil as a function of depth but its characterization as well. The study shows that the homogeneity and uniformity of the "organic clay" is probably a function of the variation of organic matter content.- The soil is characterized as a: "soft organic clay with traces of highly divided inactive organic matter, exhibiting high plasticity, composed predominantly of kaolinite cl y mineral, normally consolidated and of low sensitivity". Linear regression analysis was used to explore possible correlations between the values of the different tests carried out. It is shown that, within the limitations of the study, statistical relations do exist between the parameters measured. It is proposed that these correlations may be used for preliminary evaluation of the engineering properties of the soil studied.

Esta dissertação investiga o comportamento de t.rês solos lateríticos do Estado da Paraíba, Brasil estabilizados com cimento, com cimento e 2% de cal com um aditivo e com cimento e 2% de asfalto diluído com um aditivo. A durabilidade dos sistemas é medido em termos de mudanças da resistência e tensão indireta quando estes são expostos a um processo de ciclos de secagem-molhagem para induzir mudanças de volume. Testes de compressão simples são realizados para estudar a influência da porcentagem de cimento e tempo de cura, e para a determinação da quantidade mínima de cimento para atender um valor' arbitrário de resistência a compressão sim pies, que é usada para os espécimes preparados para o estudo da durabilidade. Os resultados obtidos, mostram claramente que o método atual brasileiro para o projeto de sistemas solo-cimento não permite avaliar a durabilidade destes sistemas. Ele mostra além disso que cal e asfalto diluído são altamente efetivos para melhorar a durabilidade dos sistemas. Interpretações qualitativas do mecanismo pela qual cal e asfalto diluído melhora a durabilidade dos sistemas é apresentada neste trabalho. One of the major factors restricting the use of soil cement as an structural material, for the construction of bases and subbases in road pavsflient, is the uncertainty of its behaviour when exposed to cyclic traffic loads and cyclic volumetric changes arising from exposure to environmental conditions. This dissertation investigates the behaviour of three lateritic soils from the State of Paraiba, Brazil stabilized with cement, with cement and 2 percent lime as an additive and with cement and 2 percent cutback bitumen as an additive. The durability of the systems in measured in terms of changes of indirect tensile strength when these are exposed to a process of dry-wet cycles to induce volume changes. Unconfined compression tests are carried out to study the influence of cement percentage and curing time, and for the determination of the minimum amount of cement required to attain ah arbitrary value of unconfined compressive strength, which is used for the specimens prepared for the durability study. The results obtained, show clearly that the actual brazilian method for the design of soil cement systems does not allow to assess the durability of theses systems. It shows furthermore' that Hme and cutback bitumen are highly effective to improve the durability of the systems. Qualitative interpretations of the mechanisms by which lime and cutback biturrieh improve the durability of the systems is offered.'

Amostras estaticamente compactadas foram submetidas a percolação de agua por diversos tempos (24,48,7 2 e 96 horas), suas permeabilidades medidas a intervalos de 12 horas e seus parâmetros de resistência triaxial no fim dos vários tempos de percolação. Três níveis de acidez da agua de percolação foram usados, 3,25, 7,3 e 12,4. Equipamento constituído de moldes e um multipermeâmetro de nível constante foi projetado e construído para o estudo, e uma nova técnica para saturação das amostras utilizadas. 0 equipamento usado mostrou resultados estatisticamente aceitáveis e seu uso tem a vantagem de diminuir o tempo de ensaio. O coeficiente de permeabilidade variou in versamente com o pH da água de percolação. Tempo de percola ção por fluxo unidirecional causou uma diminuição de permeabilidade para qualquer dos níveis de acidez investigado. Os parâmetros de resistência em termos de coesão total e efetiva e ângulo de atrito são afetados pela acidez da água de percolação. Os valores de C e f diminuem quando o pH é diminuído de 7,3 para 3,25. Aumentando o pH para 12,4 ocorre um decréscimo adicional nos valores de C e Ø' . É feita uma interpretação qualitativa deste fenômeno. Um estudo piloto limitado dos efeitos da secagem na resistência ao cisalhamento do solo Sapê-Mari mostrou que a secagem por 6 horas a 609C aumenta os valores de C e diminui Ø' para todas as condições de tempo de percolação e nível de pH. This laboratory investigation deals with the influence of seepage time and levei of acidity of water on the permeability and strength behaviour of a red soil from the State of Paraiba. Specimens statically compacted were subjected to water percolation for varying times (24, 48, 7 2 and 96 hours), their permeabilities measured at intervals of 12 hours and their triaxial strength parameters at the end of the various percolation times. Three leveis of acidity of the seepage water were used, i.e, 3.25, 7.3 and 12.4. Equipment consisting of molds and a multipermeameter of constant head were designed and constructed for the study, and a novel technique for saturation of specimens employed. It is shown that the equipment used provides statistically aceptable results and that its use has the advantaje of shortening the time of testing. The coeficient of permeability was found to vary inversely with the pH of the seepage water. Time of seepage by unidirectional flow caused a decrease of permeability for any of the acidity leveis investigated. The strength parameters in terms of total and efective cohesion and angle of internai friction are noticeably affected by the acidity of the seepage water. The values of C and Ø' decrease slightly when the pH is lowered from 7.3 to 3.25. Increasing the pH to 12.4 causes a further decrease in the values of C and Ø'. A qualitative interpretation of this phenomena is oferred. A limited pilot study of the effects of controlled drying on the shear strength of the Sapé-Mari soil showed that drying 6 hours at 6 09C increases the values of C and decrease 4>1 for ali the conditions of time of seepage and pH levei.
