This systematic review aims to summarize the evidence regarding the effectiveness of interventions targeting energy balance-related behaviors in children from lower socioeconomic environments and the applied behavior change techniques. The literature search was conducted in Cochrane, Embase, Psycinfo and Pubmed. Articles had to be published between January 2000 and September 2019. Studies were included that i) targeted dietary behavior, physical activity and/or sedentary behavior; ii) had a controlled trial design; iii) included children aged 9-12 years old; iv) focused on lower socioeconomic environments; and v) took place in upper-middle or high income countries. Two independent researchers extracted data, identified behavior change techniques using the Behavior Change Technique Taxonomy v1, and performed a methodological quality assessment using the quality assessment tool of the Effective Public Health Practice Project. We included 24 studies, of which one received a high and three a moderate quality rating. Demonstration, practice and providing instructions on how to perform a behavior were the most commonly applied behavior change techniques. Seven studies reported significant beneficial intervention effects: five on physical activity, one on physical activity and sedentary behavior and one on dietary behavior. When comparing effective versus non-effective interventions, and comparing our review to previous reviews focusing on children from the general population, similar behavior change techniques were applied. More high quality research is needed to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and their behavior change techniques targeting children of low socioeconomic environments. Objectives: We aimed to investigate accelerometer output corresponding to physical activity intensity cut-points based on percentage of peak oxygen consumption (%VO 2 peak) and Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) value in women treated for breast cancer., Design: Laboratory study., Methods: Fifty female patients shortly after completion of treatment for breast cancer were included. VO 2 peak was determined during a cardiopulmonary exercise test. Subsequently, patients performed ten activities with different intensities while wearing an accelerometer on the right hip and a mobile oxycon to assess oxygen consumption. We studied the relationship between energy expenditure (expressed as %VO 2 peak and MET-value) and accelerometer output (in counts per minute (cpm)) with linear regression analyses. We determined accelerometer output corresponding to physical activity intensity cut-points (40% and 60%VO 2 peak; 3 and 6 MET) using regression equations., Results: VO 2 peak was 22.4mL/kg/min (SD 5.2) and resting metabolic rate was 3.1mL/kg/min (SD 0.6). Accelerometer output corresponding to the cut-points for moderate (40% VO 2 peak) and vigorous intensity (60% VO 2 peak) were 1123 and 1911, respectively. The analyses based on MET-values resulted in accelerometer output of 1189cpm for the moderate (3 MET) and 2768 cpm for the vigorous intensity cut-point (6 MET)., Conclusions: Accelerometer outputs for moderate and vigorous intensity physical activity were lower than commonly used cut-points (i.e. 1952 and 5724 cpm), irrespective of the method used to express energy expenditure (%VO 2 peak versus MET-value). Thus, categorizing physical activity intensities based on general-population cut-points, may underestimate physical activity intensities for women treated for breast cancer., (Copyright © 2019 Sports Medicine Australia. Background: Few studies have differentiated between weekday and weekend day sleep duration in their association with indicators of weight status in children. Therefore, we examined the association of week and weekend day sleep duration with indicators of body composition in 10-12 year old European school children., Methods and Findings: Multi-level linear regression analysis was performed to examine the association between parent-reported week and weekend day sleep duration and objectively assessed child BMI and WC, adjusting for socio-demographic variables and energy balanced related behaviours EBRBs (i.e. dietary, physical and sedentary behaviour). Compared to sleeping 10 hrs/night or more, sleeping on average less than 10 hrs/night during weekdays was associated with higher BMI (for example, B = 0.86 and CI = [0.27;1.45] when sleeping ≤7 hrs) and WC (for example, B = 1.99 and CI = [0.32;3.65] when sleeping ≤7 hrs). Sleeping 9 hrs/night during weekend days, but not ≤8 hrs, was associated with higher WC (B = 0.66; CI = [0.04;1.28]) compared to sleeping more than 10 hrs/night. Average (week and weekend) sleep duration less than 10 hrs/night was associated with higher values for BMI (B = 0.98; CI = [0.24;1.73] and WC (B = 2.35; CI = [0.08;4.31])., Conclusions: Weekday sleep duration seems more strongly associated with body composition in European school children than weekend day sleep duration. Promoting adequate sleep duration may contribute to healthy weight in children.

Background: The association between objectively assessed sedentary time and metabolic risk factors in childhood have rarely been studied. Therefore, we examined the independent relationship between objectively assessed and self-rated sedentary time and indicators of metabolic health in Dutch and Hungarian 10-12 year olds., Methodology/principal Findings: We performed a cross-sectional survey in primary schools. Participants were Dutch and Hungarian girls (n = 73, aged 12.2 ± 0.6 years, 18% overweight/obese) and boys (n = 69, aged 12.2 ± 0.7 years, 38% overweight/obese). Sedentary time and physical activity were assessed by the Actigraph accelerometer. TV and PC time were assessed by self-report. Adiposity indicators included body weight, height, and waist circumference (WC). Fasting plasma glucose, C-peptide, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol, high density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides were determined in capillary blood and summed into a metabolic risk score. Linear regression analyses were adjusted for physical activity, number of sedentary bouts and WC. Children spent on average 7.6 hours of their daily waking time in sedentary behavior and self-reported 116 ± 64 min/day watching TV and 85 ± 57 min/day using the computer. Comparing the 1(st) and 4(th) quartile of objectively assessed sedentary time, C-Peptide levels, WC and BMI were significantly higher in the most sedentary quartile, while the difference in metabolic risk score was borderline significant (p = 0.09). Comparing the 1(st) and 4(th) quartile of TV time, BMI was significantly higher in the most sedentary quartile, while the difference in WC score was borderline significant (p = 0.06). In the adjusted linear regression analysis we found no significant association of sedentary time with metabolic risk., Conclusions/significance: Although BMI and WC were higher in the most sedentary versus the least sedentary children; we found no further evidence that more sedentary children were at increased metabolic risk.
