Increase of the urban ambient temperature caused by local and global phenomena is probably the more incontestable incident of climate change. Urban warming has a very significant impact on human life increasing the energy consumption, deteriorating the comfort levels, increasing the pollution concentration, threatening the human health and affecting the urban economy. Mitigation technologies aiming to countermeasure the impact of the phenomenon are rapidly developed and applied in real scale projects. The present paper aims to present in a critical and comprehensive way the recent scientific knowledge on the causes of urban warming and also stress the main problems and inconsistencies concerning the experimental and the theoretical findings and analysis. In parallel, it classifies and summarizes the main knowledge on the energy, environmental, health and economic impacts of urban warming. Quantitative information on the energy penalties, mortality rates and environmental degradation induced by urban warming is presented. Finally, it presents the main developments regarding urban mitigation techniques and technologies and in particular, urban greenery and planted roofs, cool pavements, cool roofs and increase of the urban albedo, decrease of the anthropogenic heat and use of the ground as a sink for heat dissipation. The energy performance of buildings directive (EPBD) (91/2002/EU) opened the way for member states of European Union to create and apply a holistic approach on buildings’ energy performance. Taking into consideration the reduced ratio of new buildings, energy refurbishment of existing building stock appears as a nodal point. In particular, buildings in Greece accounts approximately 4 million, while 70% has been constructed before the implementation of the first Thermal Insulation Regulation (TIR), thus they do not have any insulation. So, there is an extremely high potential for energy conservation in Greek building stock. Therefore, an extensive field study was carried out in northern area of Greece in Thessaloniki, through a detailed questionnaire. The purpose of the research is to create an integrated thermal insulation scheme in order to succeed the highest mitigation of energy losses through building envelope. Urban heat island and global warming increase ambient temperature and modify the energy budget of buildings. The magnitude of the modification has been evaluated in a large number of articles, under different climatic and building boundary conditions. This paper collects, analyzes and classifies existing knowledge regarding the energy impact of urban heating to buildings and calculates preliminary indicators and impact figures. Based on the analysis of the impact studies, it is found that in average the cooling load of typical urban buildings is by 13% higher compared to similar buildings in rural areas. Four specific energy impact indicators, the global energy penalty per m 2 , the global energy penalty per m 2 and degree of UHI, the global energy penalty per person and the global energy penalty per person and per degree of the UHI are defined and calculated. The variability of the heating and cooling loads of typical buildings is evaluated for the period 1970–2010. The average increase of the cooling demand is 23% while the corresponding average reduction of the heating is 19%. Abstract: Cool roof technology is an energy efficient, financially viable and sustainable solution for mitigating heat islands and reducing building energy consumption for cooling. An EU supported project called Cool Roofs has achieved to promote this technology in the EU by the implementation of an Action Plan. The work is developed in four axes, technical, market, policy and end-users. The Action Plan is steered by the development of the European Cool Roof Council that brings together all related stakeholders. The main results of the project include the creation of the European Cool Roof Council (ECRC), five cool roof pilot studies, a database of cool roofing materials, a handbook and a toolkit to assist the better understanding of the technical aspects of the technology, a market promotion plan, a proposal for a successful strategy to overcome possible policy barriers and engage with key stakeholders who could support and accelerate the creation of an EU policy and regulatory friendly environment to cool roofs, the organization of workshops and seminars and other actions of dissemination. Abstract: This research focuses on projecting the energy demand of the building sector in Greece by calculating energy consumption, using output data from regional climate models up to 2100. More specifically, Greece was subdivided into 13 climatic zones after assessing climate model data taking into account climate change estimates for the period 2010–2100. These zones allow a detailed estimation of the effects of climate change in specific regions of the country, thus creating a database which is used to model the energy demand of the building sector in each zone. Through the use of building data from Eurostat and the European Centre for Environment, a set of three building typologies was created in relation to the building envelope, which corresponds to 85% of the building stock in Greece. These typologies were later appended to each of the 13 climatic zones and a simulation for their energy demand was calculated using climatic data from 3 distinct climatic scenarios. Results show that the energy demand for heating the building sector in Greece could decrease by about 50%, while the respective energy demand for cooling could increase by as much as 248% until 2100. The aim of this study is to investigate the energy performance of a medium scale green roof system installed on a two-story commercial building in Athens, Greece and its possible contribution to the mitigation of the urban heat island phenomenon. For the purpose of this research, in-situ measurements of temperature and humidity took place during the cold period of the year. The surface temperature of the conventional concrete floor of the roof was found to be up to 21.9 K higher than the one of the planted area during the day, while at the first hours of the day, the surface temperature of the green roof appeared to be up to 1.6 K higher than the one of the cement floor of the roof. Differences of the surface temperatures of the varying plants of the green roof were measured and led to a proposal of an optimum selection among them for the best performance of such a green roof system. Furthermore, simulations for this building were performed by using the EnergyPlus program. It was calculated that, the indoor air temperature, for a non air conditioned status of the building, was decreased up to 1.1 K during a typical summer day and was increased up to 0.7 K during a typical winter day. Abstract: This work developed a methodology and an associated calculation platform in order to identify the economic efficient design solutions for residential Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) design considering the influence of the local climate, the endogenous energy resources and the local economic conditions. One case study of a detached house for 3 climates was analyzed with the tool developed in order to gain insights on the economic space of NZEB solutions and the influence of the climatic context. A methodology for assisting the choice of economically efficient NZEB solutions from the early design stage is now available. Its use in practice may be of great relevance as the results showed that the differences between an economically efficient and economically inefficient NZEB can be over three times both in terms of initial and life cycle cost. Abstract: This paper describes an effort to estimate the impact of a cool roof (characterised by increased solar reflectance compared to the initial roof and high infrared emittance) on the energy performance and thermal behaviour of a non-cooled school building in Athens, Greece. An experimental monitoring campaign has been carried out before and after the application of a white elastomeric coating with a solar reflectance of 0.89 on the roof of the building. The air and surface temperature of the building have been measured and a set of meteorological parameters have been collected. An infrared camera has been used to depict the differences in the surface temperature before and after the cool roof application. The monitoring results are complemented and supported by building simulation. The building has been modelled into TRNSYS software and the model has been calibrated and validated using the experimental data. Simulation results show a decrease in the air temperature in the classes that reaches 2.8°C and a decrease in the annual cooling load by 40%. The corresponding heating penalty (i.e. the increase of heating load) is 10%. Additionally, the impact of the cool roof on thermal comfort, peak power and surface temperature has been assessed. The present paper describes a holistic energy efficient retrofit of low income multiple social housing located in Athens, Greece. A holistic analysis was conducted in order to determine the optimum retrofit plan that includes innovative and state of the art commercially available technologies, passive techniques as well as renewable energy sources, aiming to reduce its energy consumption and carbon footprint, improve indoor environmental conditions and be cost effective at the same time. An extensive experimental campaign including air leakage measurements, thermal imaging, energy consumption and indoor environmental quality measurements was conducted before and after the implementation of the retrofit. In addition, advanced building simulation, occupant surveys and socioeconomic analyses were performed in order to evaluate the impact of the retrofit and estimate specific performance indicators. Buildings are responsible for about the 40% of the global annual energy consumption, therefore, innovative strategies for buildings’ energy efficiency are under development. Strategies of re-roofing with “cool” materials have a non-negligible cooling energy saving potential, as they contribute to the reduction of the peak ambient temperatures during summer and, moreover, they contribute to the improvement of the urban microclimate by decreasing the intensity of heat island phenomena. In this paper, the experimental characterization and optimization of a new membrane for buildings’ roof is carried out. To this aim, laboratory measurements were performed to determine its optic-energy properties and, therefore, to optimize its “cool roof” behavior. A full scale field test was also setup in order to measure the global solar radiation reflected by each membrane, before and after optimization, with varying boundary conditions, e.g. time during the day, seasonal period, and weather conditions. The in-field experimental campaign allowed to characterize the optic-energy behavior of the cool membranes in real boundary conditions, showing non-negligible variation of measured solar reflection capability with varying environmental constraints in winter conditions. The research showed interesting results from the in-lab optimization campaign, and non-negligible unreliability due to environmental agents affecting in-field albedo measurement. Abstract: Commonly used materials in the construction of the building façades located in warm climates, often entrap a great amount of heat from the incoming solar radiation, leading to a respective thermal increase in the interior. The aim of the present study is to examine mineral-based coatings as a passive solar technique that contributes to buildings’ energy efficiency. A series of mineral based samples are developed and tested. Their thermal performance is estimated by infrared thermography and surface temperature measurements. Their optical properties are also measured while the energy efficiency is quantified using simulation techniques. The results revealed that renders based on hydraulic and/or hydrated lime with additions of calcium carbonate powder, as well as mineral paints comprised either of lime wash or silicate minerals can behave as cool coatings and contribute to a significant reduction of the cooling demand in warm climates.
