This article analyzes the processes of compressing hydrogen in the gaseous state, an aspect considered important due to its contribution to the greater diffusion of hydrogen in both the civil and industrial sectors. This article begins by providing a concise overview and comparison of diverse hydrogen-storage methodologies, laying the groundwork with an in-depth analysis of hydrogen's thermophysical properties. It scrutinizes plausible configurations for hydrogen compression, aiming to strike a delicate balance between energy consumption, derived from the fuel itself, and the requisite number of compression stages. Notably, to render hydrogen storage competitive in terms of volume, pressures of at least 350 bar are deemed essential, albeit at an energy cost amounting to approximately 10% of the fuel's calorific value. Multi-stage compression emerges as a crucial strategy, not solely for energy efficiency, but also to curtail temperature rises, with an upper limit set at 200 °C. This nuanced approach is underlined by the exploration of compression levels commonly cited in the literature, particularly 350 bar and 700 bar. The study advocates for a three-stage compression system as a pragmatic compromise, capable of achieving high-pressure solutions while keeping compression work below 10 MJ/kg, a threshold indicative of sustainable energy utilization. This article proposes a particular strategy to proceed with a progressive electrification of public transport systems in cities. Starting from a bus operation model, the possible electrification of two routes is analyzed, one urban and another extra-urban in the city of Pisa. An estimate is made of the energy uses associated with certain operating modes. The maximum level of consumption is estimated at approximately 280 kWh per day per bus for the urban route and excluding some special days, less than 215 kWh per day for the extra-urban route, for which a hybrid bus is proposed. Starting from an estimate of the daily consumption for the management of the two routes, the sizing of a photovoltaic (PV) plant distributed on some modular shelters which serves to power the same routes, is carried out. The resulting system has a power of the order of 190–200 kW. The modular solution is also outlined, and an installation is proposed. The analyzed case lends itself to being easily replicated. Shared public buildings have become centers of innovation, integrating advanced technologies to meet evolving societal needs. With a heightened emphasis on occupants' health and well-being, these buildings serve as hubs for technological convergence, facilitating seamless connectivity and intelligent data analysis and management. Within this context, environmental monitoring emerges as a foundational element, pivotal to all aspects of building management. This article provides findings from the nationally funded RE-START project, which focuses on shared public buildings, with special regard to educational and medical facilities. The project explores enhanced indoor air quality monitoring, focusing on CO2 concentration that is directly correlated with occupancy, as a fundamental element for developing health and safety protocols, energy efficiency strategies, the integration of smart building technologies, and data-driven energy management. The intersection of environmental monitoring, energy efficiency, security, and IoT technologies in in indoor spaces is relevant. Heritage from the COVID-19 period (in terms of massive utilization of mechanical ventilation systems), global warming, and increasing electricity prices are new challenging factors in building energy management, and are hindering the desired path towards improved energy efficiency and reduced building consumption. The solution to improve the smartness of today's building and automation control systems is to equip them with increased intelligence to take prompt and appropriate actions to avoid unnecessary energy consumption, while maintaining a desired level of air quality. In this manuscript, we evaluate the ability of machine-learning-based algorithms to predict CO2 levels, which are classic indicators used to evaluate air quality. We show that these algorithms provide accurate forecasts (more accurate in particular than those provided by physics-based models). These forecasts could be conveniently embedded in control systems. Energy performance improvement in manufacturing is hindered by the lack of information on energy use in production and by the predominant economic vision in the assessment of energy interventions. This paper proposes a framework that integrates energy performance mapping with energy systems optimization. The framework introduces a new dimension to energy performance mapping by tracing energy use along processing and energy conversion steps and revisits multi-criteria assessments by assigning penalties to the energy performance gap with best practice. The suitability of food manufacturing for the application of the framework is exemplified from both a top-down and bottom-up perspective. More than 80% reductions in purchased energy carriers and non-renewable energy sources are achieved in a representative process through interventions coupling sector-specific manufacturing knowledge and energy expertise. With regard to one of the interventions, the introduction of the penalty is shown to shift the optimal solution, yielding more than 25% reductions in energy consumption compared to a purely economic assessment. The proposed framework can help industrial stakeholders identify improvement opportunities and develop more sustainable energy systems in manufacturing. The paper analyzes energy consumption as a performance indicator for micro-manufacturing. A comparative analysis between micro-EDM and ultrashort pulse laser drilling is performed on the basis of similar process outputs like drilled thickness of 350 μm, hole diameter of 180 ± 3 μm, drilling time, micro-hole shape and inner surface quality. Experimental data revealed that ultrashort pulse laser drilling enabled root mean squared surface roughness of about 100 nm in a drilling time of 2.5 s, whereas using a conventional micro-EDM drilling operation with a 10 s duration yielded surface roughness of 380 nm. For ultrashort pulse laser ablation the specific energy consumption is increased, as the drilling time is decreased due to an increase of the adopted pulse energy up to 50 μJ but the surface roughness and the capability of obtaining very sharp edges remain unchanged. With a calculated energy intensity in the order of 10 10 J/kg and a process rate in the order of 10 −6 kg/h, ultrashort pulse laser drilling can be considered as a valid alternative from both technology point of view and specific energy consumption to similar drilling process, like micro-EDM which is characterized by a lower process rate and a higher energy intensity. In this paper, after a brief review of the methodologies proposed in the literature for the forecasting of heat load and thermal energy consumption, a specific analysis of the trends of natural gas consumption applied to the Italian case. Italy is a country in which the use of natural gas can be mainly connected to the uses of thermal energy for heating purposes. The natural gas consumption data are analyzed characterised and clustered referring to the last four years (2012–2015). The dependence of the typical Italian consumption profile in different days of the week, in different seasons and for the different users are analyzed: residential/civil, industrial and use referred to thermoelectric power plants are in particular analyzed. The analysis of the data shows that natural gas consumption profile is mainly related to seasonality pattern and to the weather conditions (in particular temperature below 15 °C) for the civil/residential sector, but it is shown that there is also an important daily pattern both related to industrial and civil energy consumption that, at a lower degree than the previous one, does affect the consumption profile and have to be taken into account for defining an effective short and mid term thermal energy forecasting method. A possible mathematical structure of the natural gas consumption profile is proposed. Due to the strong link between thermal energy use, mainly connected to heating purposes, and natural gas consumption this analysis could be considered the first step for the development of a model for thermal energy forecasting. The use of the two-phase closed thermosyphons (TPCTs) is increasing for many heat transfer applications. This paper reviews the most recent published experimental and theoretical studies on the TPCT. After a description of the TPCT operating principle and the performance characteristics, the heat transfer analysis in condenser and evaporator sections that depends on the complex two-phase process are described. The influence of the affecting parameters on the performance of TPCTs such as the geometry (diameter, shape and length), the inclination angle, the filling ratio (FR), the working fluid, the operating temperature and pressure analyzed by various researchers is discussed. The various operating limits occurring in a thermosyphon includes viscous, sonic, dryout, boiling and flooding are also analyzed. Considering the application of TPCTs, the paper presents a review of experimental tests and applications. Abstract: Numerical simulation is a fundamental instrument for the elaboration and assessment of a strategic utilization of geothermal energy. It can be used for the evaluation of both the natural (unperturbed) state and the production scenarios. The motivation and important role of the numerical models are described here and deeply illustrated in the context of the geothermal energy exploitation. The mathematical–physical background is also briefly illustrated, together with all the practical problems of modeling and implementation. Particular attention must be paid to the boundary conditions and thermophysical parameters assignment and calibration. The reliability of the model must be accurately evaluated, in order to prevent common failures in design and running of the energy conversion units and wells. Several case studies are reviewed and discussed, and a final discussion is presented. The limits of the reservoir modeling and simulation are also outlined in a general methodological perspective of integrated analysis. The scenarios modeled and assessed can be then used as practical tools for the sizing and optimization of the power unit or direct heat utilization. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper presents an analysis of Laser Sintering (LS) process from an energy standpoint. LS has a potential as an environmental benign alternative to traditional processes but only few authors deal with the process optimization including the energy aspects. This work evaluates the effect of the energy density in processing of two polymeric materials: polyamide powder and a phenolic resin coated sand. The different behaviour of the two materials is studied by analysing the geometrical features (depth and width) of linear sintered structures. In particular the volumetric productivity and the energy intensity of the process are calculated to characterize the sintering process. It is shown how an upper limit to the energy consumption can be remarked. Measurements reveal that within the energy density range of 0.02–0.1J/mm2 the whole energy input is useful for the agglomeration process. The use of higher energy density produces different results for both the cases analysed. A proper selection of energy density maintains the energy requirement below the level of 106 J/kg which is considered a lower limit for manufacturing process. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Much remains to be done in binary geothermal power plant technology, especially for exploiting low-enthalpy resources. Due to the great variability of available resources (temperature, pressure, chemical composition), it is really difficult to “standardize the technology”.The problem involves many different variables: working fluid selection, heat recovery system definition, heat transfer surfaces sizing and auxiliary systems consumption. Electricity generation from geothermal resources is convenient if temperature of geothermal resources is higher than 130°C. Extension of binary power technology to use low-temperature geothermal resources has received much attention in the last years. This paper analyzes and discusses the exploitation of low temperature, water-dominated geothermal fields with a specific attention to regenerative Organic Rankine Cycles (ORC). The geothermal fluid inlet temperatures considered are in the 100–130°C range, while the return temperature of the brine is assumed to be between 70 and 100°C. The performances of different configurations, two basic cycle configurations and two recuperated cycles are analyzed and compared using dry organic fluids as the working fluids. The dry organic fluids for this study are R134a, isobutane, n-pentane and R245fa. Effects of the operating parameters such as turbine inlet temperature and pressure on the thermal efficiency, exergy destruction rate and Second Law efficiency are evaluated. The possible advantages of recuperated configurations in comparison with basic configurations are analyzed, showing that in a lot of cases the advantage in terms of performance increase is minimal but significant reductions in cooling systems surface area can be obtained (up to 20%). Abstract: Renewable energy sources (RES) are mainly used in the electrical sector. Electricity is not a storable commodity. Hence it is necessary to produce the requested quantity and distribute it through the system in such a way as to ensure that electricity supply and demand are always evenly balanced. This constraint is actually the main problem related to the penetration of new renewables (wind and photovoltaic power) in the context of complex energy systems. Moreover the design of optimal energy resource mixes in climate change mitigation actions is a challenge faced in many places. The paper analyzes the problem of new renewable energy sources penetration. The case of Italian scenario is considered as a meaningful reference due to the characteristic size and the complexity of the same. The various energy scenarios are evaluated with the aid of a multipurpose software taking into account the interconnections between the different energetic uses. In particular it is shown how the penetration of new renewable energy sources is limited at an upper level by technological considerations and it will be more sustainable if an integration of the various energy uses (thermal, mobility and electrical) will be considered. A series of optimized scenarios are developed. In each case the maximum RES penetration feasible with the constraints was defined. Then analysis is applied to an energy system model of Italy showing how an integrated development of CHP and electric mobility can aid a further integration of wind and photovoltaic energy power. Food stores and supermarkets are buildings, often with rather similar structures characterized by large surfaces and a single floor, that are particularly energy intensive. The energy uses associated with them are mainly electrical, in connection with air conditioning and food refrigeration. These buildings are particularly interesting for a systematic application of photovoltaic (PV) generation technology. After an analysis of the main energy consumption parameters and of the most common benchmarking approaches, standard solutions for the sizing of photovoltaic systems are proposed based on different design objectives, highlighting the potential of each solution proposed. Two specific indicators are defined for the sizing processes. The methodology is tested with reference to two different stores under the zero grid-injection restriction. The results showed how the degree of self-sufficiency for a supermarket obtained with a PV plant can be of the order of 20% in cases without storage system and can be increased over 50% and up to 70–75% but only using relevant battery storage dimensions. The paper analyzes and compares the perspectives for reducing the energy consumption associated to the operation of Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning system for climatic control of large-size non-residential buildings. Three different control strategies are considered comparing the use of boiler and heat pumps as heating systems and analyzing the use of demand-controlled ventilation, operating on the effective occupancy of the building. The control strategies are applied to two different educational buildings with shapes representative of typical educational structures. The results of the analysis show how the energy consumption can be reduced up to 70%, shifting from the actual values of the energy intensity of over 300 kWh/m2 for year to values of less than 100 kWh/m2 per year. The significance of the energy savings achieved in such different buildings has led to the identification of a possible benchmark for HVAC systems in the next future years which could help reach the environmental targets in this sector. One of the main elements for increasing energy efficiency in large-scale buildings is identified in the correct management and control of the Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, particularly those with Heat Pumps (HPs). The present study aimed to evaluate the perspective of energy savings achievable with the implementation of an optimal control of the HVAC with HPs. The proposed measures involve the use of a variable air volume system, demand-controlled ventilation, an energy-aware control of the heat recovery equipment, and an improved control of the heat pump and chiller supply water temperature. The analysis has been applied to an academic building located in Pisa and is carried out by means of dynamic simulation. The achieved energy saving can approach values of more than 80% if compared with actual plants based on fossil fuel technologies. A major part of this energy saving is linked to the use of heat pumps as thermal generators as well as to the implementation of an energy efficient ventilation, emphasizing the importance of such straightforward measures in reducing the energy intensity of large-scale buildings. The paper provides a methodology for the optimal control of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems used in public buildings, with the purpose of obtaining high comfort and safety standards along with energy efficiency. The combination of the two concurrent objectives of minimizing energy use and guaranteeing high standards of occupant comfort is obtained by means of multi-objective optimization, in which a comfort model is combined along with a dynamic energy model of the building. The use of dynamic setpoints for the HVAC and the inclusion of comfort indicators represent a step forward, compared to the current design and operation procedures suggested by technical standards. The utilization of the proposed methodology is tested with reference to a case study, represented by an academic building used by the University of Pisa for educational purposes, whose extensive and variable occupancy can help to emphasize the importance of comfort in the operation of HVAC systems in different climatic conditions and with different occupancy profiles. We show how this optimization brings interesting results in terms of energy-saving (up to 30%), obtaining an increased comfort level (of more than 25%) compared to the operating conditions suggested by technical standards. Worldwide increasing awareness of energy sustainability issues has been the main driver in developing the concepts of (Nearly) Zero Energy Buildings, where the reduced energy consumptions are (nearly) fully covered by power locally generated by renewable sources. At the same time, recent advances in Internet of Things technologies are among the main enablers of Smart Homes and Buildings. The transition of conventional buildings into active environments that process, elaborate and react to online measured environmental quantities is being accelerated by the aspects related to COVID-19, most notably in terms of air exchange and the monitoring of the density of occupants. In this paper, we address the problem of maximizing the energy efficiency and comfort perceived by occupants, defined in terms of thermal comfort, visual comfort and air quality. This paper analyzes the optimal sizing of a particular solution for renewable energy residential building integration. The solution combines a photovoltaic (PV) plant with a heat pump (HP). The idea is to develop a system that permits the maximum level of self-consumption of renewable energy generated by using a small-scale solar array installed on the same building. The problem is analyzed using data obtained from an experimental system installed in a building in Pisa, Italy. The residential house was equipped with a PV plant (about 3.7 kW of peak power), assisting a HP of similar electrical power (3.8 kW). The system was monitored for eight years of continuous operation. With reference to the data acquired from the long-term experimental analysis and considering a more general perspective, we discuss criteria and guidelines for the design of such a system. We focus on the possibility of exporting energy to the electrical grid, from the perspective of obtaining self-consumption schemes. Considering that one of the problems with small-scale PV plants is represented by the bidirectional energy flows from and to the grid, possible alternative solutions for the design are outlined, with both a size reduction in the plant and utilization of a storage system considered. Energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and comfort in public buildings has received increasing attention in recent years as it can contribute to maintaining safety conditions and to the reduction of conventional fuels consumption, energy costs for building owners, and greenhouse gas emissions. People are an integral part of any building energetic ecosystem as, according to some estimates, they spend a great part of their life in indoor spaces. On one side, occupants are responsible for the energy consumption of the building and for this reason the "psychology of energy saving" has received attention since the 70s up to recent results. On the other hand, strategies for energy efficiency should not jeopardize occupants' health and quality of life. While general awareness of the value of environmental variables has increased in the last few years, this interest has recently been further exacerbated by the spreading of the well-known COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, as most countries have started planning post-lock-down activities, there is a growing concern regarding how social distancing measures can be enforced in shared buildings and strict indoor air quality control can prevent airborne virus transmission in crowded spaces. The paper discusses the perspectives of increasing the level of social interaction of building users through the systematic use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), and in particular, some specific platforms. The ICT system, taking information from the occupants in a concerted way, can be an important instrument to collect data, coming both from physical sensors and from people to develop a multi-objective control strategy for the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Cooling (HVAC) systems in order to obtain energy savings whilst balancing user comfort and healthy conditions. Air ventilation rate plays a relevant role in maintaining adequate indoor air quality (IAQ) conditions in public buildings. In general, high ventilation rates ensure good indoor air quality but entail relevant energy consumption. Considering the necessity of balancing IAQ and energy consumption, a correlation between the number of occupants obtained from analysis of CO2 concentration variation is presented as a general element for controlling the operation of heating ventilation and air cooling (HVAC) systems. The specific CO2 exhalation rate is estimated using experimental data in some real conditions in university classrooms. A method for the definition of optimal values of air exchange rate is defined, highlighting that the obtained values are much lower than those defined in current technical standards with possibilities of relevant reduction of the total energy consumption.
