The article explores the theoretical and empirical adequacy of some commonly applied employment functions for explaining the structure of demand for aggregate employment in the manufacturing sector in Great Britain. It identifies the single equation employment functions. In addition, it compares the three main groups of applied models which have been developed to explain the demand for the number of employees and to explain the associated demand for the number of hours worked. Lastly, it emphasizes the importance of the development of specifications of the aggregate employment function which can stand up to empirical testing against the data.
