This book studies the role that grassroots volunteers play in the integration and naturalization process in Singapore. With increasing migration, the topics of migrant integration and belonging are of perennial academic and public interest. However, much of the existing literature on the subject is largely focused on European and North American cases. By focusing on the single case of Singapore, this project provides a story of how a city-state grapples with the issue of managing increasing cultural diversity while seeking to maintain a cohesive identity. As a city, Singapore has many ubiquitous features of other urban centres for migration, such as a rapidly diversifying population and an economy that is heavily reliant on foreign labour. At the same time, being a city-state means that the demographic and cultural changes experienced in Singapore also coincide with questions of national belonging and membership in the nation-state, in contrast to larger countries with rural-urban divides or more decentralized systems of migration management and integration. Examining this simultaneously typical yet unique case study means that this project is able to examine the processes where state and society have managed migration and cultural diversity at the level of the nation-state. For example, this project discusses how Singapore's policy of multiracialism complements nation-building efforts, adding to existing public and academic debate about whether societies can concurrently embrace cultural difference yet maintain a cohesive national identity.

This book brings new insight from social psychology to explore migrant integration in Western Europe. Through a series of survey studies it illustrates the importance of sociopolitical conditions, such as political polarization and discriminatory climates, for understanding cross-national variation in migrant integration outcomes. The author investigates how migrants integrate; what factors facilitate or hinder successful integration; and how successes and failures along the way affect subsequent integration outcomes. This open access book develops a typology of cities by exploring how current levels of migration-related diversity and segregation relate to three groups of factors: international mobilities, inequalities and political-institutional aspects of local governance. Based on both quantitative and qualitative data from 16 cities in four European countries (France, Germany, The Netherlands, and Italy), the book compares the cities and uses a method of fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis. It demonstrates the shared contingencies of factors among the cities within each type and the crucial differences between the types of localities, and offers a more differentiated, holistic understanding of migration-related diversity configurations through the five conceptualised types: (1) Superdiverse cities, (2) Postindustrial diverse cities. (3) Middle class diverse cities, (4) Divided cities, and (5) Marginal migration cities. As such, the book is a valuable read to all those who would like to learn more about urban migration-related diversity and how it is formed and governed.

This book uses sociolinguistic approaches to explore how media discourse on undocumented migration informs Morocco-Spain political relations. Historically, much of the contact between these two nations has been through conquest - first through the Umayyad Caliphate taking control of the Iberian Peninsula (then called Hispania) in the 8th century, and then through Spain's occupation of northern Morocco in the 20th century. Though these historical roots have undoubtedly played a role in shaping present-day Morocco-Spain relations, migration has also become another critical element, as the majority of legally authorized migration to Spain comes from Morocco. Additionally, Morocco serves as a sojourn for much of the undocumented migration to the Spanish autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, both of which are enclaves in Morocco and common entry points for North African and Sub-Saharan African immigrants. Migration to Ceuta and Melilla has therefore become a flashpoint for anti-immigration attitudes that are frequently perpetuated in political and media discourse. The author uses these cities as a case study, situating them within the wider context of both immigration-related policies and news articles in order to examine how migration is represented in Spain and Morocco. The book connects media discourse with policy discourse, and addresses how these mediums (1) co-construct anti-immigration and xenophobic ideologies, and (2) shape and are shaped by the somewhat strained relations between Spain and Morocco. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of Discourse Analysis, Sociolinguistics, Migration Studies and Migration Policy, Media Studies and Political Communication.

The long-lasting political instability in Afghanistan since the Soviet Union invasion in 1979 has displaced millions of Afghans, both internally and internationally. Despite their growing numbers, the challenges that Afghan refugees encounter in public institutions and everyday interaction with members of their host countries have remained largely uninvestigated. This research thus explores perceived institutional violence against Afghan refugees in Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden. The semi-structured interviews provide evidence on the occurrence of perceived verbal violence, and differential and poor treatment in institutions. The quantitative analysis lends empirical evidence to the extent, factors, grounds, and consequences of institutional verbal violence, institutional failure, everyday discrimination, and sense of belonging. Permanent residence, school education, age, having children, country of residence, citizenship, and employment were identified as factors significantly affecting the experiences and perceptions of respondents. Respondents reported negative experiences mostly in institutions that often deal with migration and asylum matters. Legal status, ethnic origin, religion, unemployment, appearance, and lower language proficiency seem to be the main grounds for institutional violence.

Identities on the Move interrogates the categories given and adopted by people on the move through a transdisciplinary and global approach that includes social and political sciences and the arts. It brings together experiences of displacement from a variety of cultural and national backgrounds, including Brazilians, Chinese, Koreans, South Italians, Africans, Muslims, Arabophobe migrants, Iranians, Pakistanis, Bosnians, Latin Americans and Eastern Europeans. It looks at their identity-negotiating processes in different geographies across the globe, namely Japan, UK, Palestine, Italy, Australia, Europe and North America. This multi-geographical and multi-disciplinary approach allows us to decentralise previous narratives of migration by reformulating them against coloniality and invisibility and presenting them within a richer and changing contemporary map of dynamic identities. The global scale of the case studies included in this volume also allows for a wider exploration of thematic concepts within the (trans)formation of displaced identities, such as assimilation versus alienation, memory and trauma, stigmatisation, enculturation, acculturation and deculturation. In a nutshell, this volume highlights current complexities of identity formation in a global scene that is moving away from homogenous nations by presenting a multi-layered and multi-spatial notion of belonging.

The book project strives to establish and interpret the experiences and realities of African migration using African epistemology and philosophy. The significance of this book is triggered by an observation that seeks to propound the Eurocentric paradigm as not being the only dominating, acceptable, or legitimate approach to knowledge in explaining the evolution and dynamics of African migration. Africans have a long history of migration, both involuntary and voluntary. Contemporary African migrants have experienced three (3) types of migration, namely labour migration, forced migration or refugee movement, and skilled professional migration. These types of migration take place within the continent and between Africa and other continents. The book seeks to explore and cover a wide array of issues experienced by contemporary African migrants. This includes, but is not limited to, what and who a contemporary African migrant is; factors that influence contemporary African migration; the role and impact of regional institutions and other transnational entities on contemporary African migration; the challenges of contemporary African migrants; the impact of contemporary African migrants in national, regional, international politics and economy; the role of a contemporary African migrant on regional integration.

​This book examines the experiences of refugees who populated the Displaced Persons (DP) camps in the British Zone of Allied-occupied Germany after the Second World War. With a specific focus on Polish and Jewish communities, it explores the interaction between migration policy and the migration strategy of refugees - or in other words – the relationship between DP policy and individual choices, and how these evolved over time. The book aims to harmonize often contradictory images of displaced persons in the British Zone of occupation by taking a comparative approach and analysing conflicting identifications and state-individual relations. Drawing on the records of the International Tracing Service, refugee memoirs, DP publications distributed in the camps themselves, and personal petitions and correspondences, the author sheds light on the experiences of displaced persons and illustrates the difficulty of making clear-cut distinctions between forced and voluntary migration. Today, as in the post-war period, refugees'access to social rights and welfare, settlement rights, and the possibility of family reunification, can all be determined by the same labels that were so fiercely contested after 1945. A dichotomy between so-called ‘economic'and ‘political'migration endures, and many claims to asylum are today rejected on the grounds of applicants not being formally recognized as ‘genuine'refugees and recipients of aid. This book therefore adds to our growing understanding of the plight of refugees and the need to ensure access to justice for all through the ongoing building of an effective, accountable, and inclusive refugee regime.

Im Rahmen der „Flüchtlingskrise“ ab 2015 war vielerorts die Rede davon, dass die Polarisierung zu einer Erosion des gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalts in Deutschland geführt habe und entsprechend gegengesteuert werden müsse. Dabei geht die diskursive Präsenz des gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalts jedoch nicht mit begrifflicher Klarheit einher, auch nicht auf der wissenschaftlichen Ebene. Um dem Diskurs mehr Substanz zu verleihen, untersucht Frederik Schäfer in dieser Arbeit den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalt in Deutschland sowie den Konnex zur Migrations- und Flüchtlingsthematik, indem er den Fokus sowohl auf die politische Theorie als auch auf die Analyse qualitativer Experteninterviews richtet. Die Verknüpfung von Theorie und Empirie zeigt, dass hinsichtlich des gesellschaftlichen Zusammenhalts kollektivistische sowie individualistische Zugänge im politischen Alltag nur eine geringe Relevanz haben. Vielmehr werden gemeinsame Werte weitgehend als konstitutiv für den Zusammenhalt wahrgenommen. Konkret haben sich Engagement und Begegnung sowie Arbeit als zentrale Faktoren des Zusammenhalts herauskristallisiert. Zudem zeigt das Buch, dass die Debatte um Migration und Flüchtlinge mitunter an der zugrunde liegenden Problematik vorbeigeht – vor allem in Sachsen lässt sich der polarisierte Konflikt als eine Chiffre für historisch bedingte Ungerechtigkeitswahrnehmungen verstehen.

This book is about the social protection of lower-skilled migrants from Sri Lanka. It reasons out the importance of protecting Sri Lankan migrant workers considering the significant economic contribution of lower-skilled migrant workers and their higher level of exposure to risks at all stages of international migration: pre-departure, on the job, and after returnee reintegration. The book explores social protection programmes for low-skilled immigrants from three perspectives: legal aspects, national policies, and programmes. The chapter on legal background for protecting migrant workers focuses on declarations and on labour laws on the national and international level. Policies and programmes identify national level labour policies and other related policies that apply to migrant workers, as well as available social protection programmes for Sri Lankan migrant workers. In turn, the solutions for minimizing the related risks faced by Sri Lankan migrant workers. Highlighting the economic contribution of migrant workers and their vulnerability at all stages of migration, this book offers a timely and important contribution for policy makers and practitioners as well as scholars of migration studies, public policy and related fields.

Eine der vielfältigen Konsequenzen des Ausbruchs der Finanzkrise 2009 in Griechenland ist die Auswanderung von Hochqualifizierten. Ab dieser Zeit scheint Deutschland im Kontext der EU-Freizügigkeit zu einem Magneten für die Hochqualifizierten aus Griechenland geworden zu sein. Die vorliegende Studie, die sich in der sozialwissenschaftlichen empirischen Migrationsforschung verorten lässt, legt den Fokus auf diese EU-Zuwanderung, um die Beweggründe und die Migrationsmotive dieser Hochqualifizierten zu untersuchen. Unter Einnahme einer vergleichenden Perspektive stehen drei verschiedene Berufsgruppen im Mittelpunkt: IT-Expert•innen, Ärzt•innnen, die eine Fachärzt•inausbildung absolvieren bzw. absolvieren möchten, und Nachwuchswissenschaftler•innen in den Geisteswissenschaften. Da allerdings nicht alle Hochqualifizierten aus Griechenland migrieren, wird auch in Anlehnung an den Begriff Stasis der Frage nachgegangen, was potenzielle Migrant•innen in Griechenland dazu veranlasst, dort zu verbleiben und nicht zu migrieren. Darüber hinaus werden im Zusammenhang mit dem Brain-Drain weitere Aspekte beleuchtet, darunter die subjektive (moralische) Wahrnehmung dieses Phänomens und die folgenden Herausforderungen für beide Länder.

Delving into the past and present of various secessionist movements in Northeast India, political conflict in Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh, a political movement for autonomy in Darjeeling hills in Eastern India, and the Rohingya migration crisis affecting India and Bangladesh, this book examines the volatile co-existence of competing population groups in Eastern South Asia. Through the conceptual lens of the ‘home'and feeling of ‘homeland'in Eastern South Asia, the authors seek answers to three complex but interrelated questions: why is Eastern South Asia facing so many political movements and conflicts? This volume is devoted to three key themes central to studies in regional science: the sub-national labor market, migration, and mobility, and their analysis.
