Abstract

A new report discusses research conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital on the use of machine learning algorithms and wearable technology for the early detection of postoperative complications after cardiothoracic surgery. The study involved 56 patients who wore a Fitbit watch before and after surgery, and the NightSignal algorithm was used to detect postoperative events. The algorithm successfully detected 17 out of 21 postoperative events, with a sensitivity of 81%. The researchers concluded that machine learning analysis of biometric data from wearable devices has the potential to detect postoperative complications before symptoms appear.
