The mass production of radiation resistant magnets for the J-PARC external beam lines is discussed. A new remote handling system of beam line magnets named 'Chimney' is developed and used for magnets placed at the highest radiation area near the production target.

A method is described for fabricating the shield penetrating water cooled bus ducts insulated by polyimide resin. No defect is observed in the insulation resistance of all bus ducts and the magnet and power supply will be connected through this shield penetrating water cooled bus ducts.

Indirect-cooling mineral-insulation magnet coils are developed for high radiation environment downstream of a production target. The current of DC 1000 A is fed to the solid-conductor mineral-insulator-cable (MIC) coils in vacuum by improving the structure of end parts of MICs and by increasing their emissivity.

A series of the R&D works on the radiation resistant magnets for the Japan Hadron Facility (JHF) project is conducted at the High Energy Accelerator Research Organization. The actual sized completely-inorganic radiation-resistance quadrupole magnet, designed for the 50 GeV proton beam transportation, is manufactured by using mineral insulation magnet cable (MIC).

An active target with plastic scintillating fibers has been constructed. This active target serves as a production target of hyperons, as well as a scattering target, and works as a 4 [pi]-detector for charged particles. This system is designed for measurements of hyperon-proton scattering for hyperon momenta of several hundred MeV/c. A spectrometer system for the incident beam and outgoing particles of the hyperon production reaction is linked with this target-detector in order to provide triggers for the imaging device of this detector system. As a control of this detector, the decay constant of [[SIGMA].sup.-] hyperon has been evaluated. Index Terms--Active target, hyperon-proton scattering, scintillating fibers.

Research having to do with radiation-resistant magnets is under way at the High Energy Research Organization (KEK), Tsukuba-shi, Japan. The research involves the Japan Hadron Facility (JHF), Japan's next-generation high-intensity accelerator project.

The development of radiation-resistant magnets for the Japan Hadron Facility Project is described.

The installation of two types of large horn magnets in the neutrino beam line at the KEK-12GeV Proton Synchrotron is described.

Continuity R&D work is reported here on the radiation resistant magnets for the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The main accelerator Of the J-PARC is the 50 GeV-15 mA proton synchrotron (50 GeV-PS) with beam power of 750 kW. The radiation resistant magnet is the key technology to realize the external beam lines and experimental facilities of the J-PARC 50 GeV-PS. The radiation resistant technologies we have selected for the J-PARC are; (1) Polyimide Resin Insulation (PI) for up to 108 Gy and, (2) Mineral Insulation magnet Cables (MICs) with larger cross sections for higher radiation dose up to 1011 Gy. Approximately 20 polyimide insulation magnets and 10 MIC magnets are designed for the external beam lines of the 50 GeV-PS.
