We have performed complex experimental and theoretical investigations of the spectral-luminescent properties and electronic structure of new phthalocyanine analogs, Mg octaphenylporphyrazine and its derivatives with an annulated thiadiazole or selenadiazole ring instead of two phenyl groups. Fluorescence characteristics have been determined at 293 and 77 K: emission, excitation, and fluorescence polarization spectra; fluorescence quantum yield φ, and lifetime τ. Annulation of a five-membered chalcogen-containing heterocycle leads to splitting of the long-wavelength absorption band Q(0-0) and to the bathochromic shift of its longest wavelength component Q(0-0), which increase upon passage from S to Se. At the same time, the fluorescence quantum yield φ and lifetime τ decrease, which is related to the intramolecular heavy-atom effect. The geometric structure of the ground state of the Mg porphyrazine molecules has been determined based on the density functional theory (DFT), and excited electronic states have been calculated with modified parametrization of the INDO/S method, INDO/Sm. Semiquantitatively, the calculated level positions of the lowest Q states and spectral shifts of Mg octaphenylporphyrazine and S-derivative agree with experimental data. For the range of the Soret band, calculated transition energies and their intensity distributions substantially depend on the dihedral angle γ between a phenyl ring and porphyrazine macrocycle. We show that, based on calculations at the angle γ = 60°, bands in the observed absorption spectra can be assigned with an accuracy of ∼2000 cm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spectral and luminescent properties of a new phthalocyanine analog, the magnesium complex of diphenyl substituted mono(1,4-diazepino)tribenzoporphyrazine, have been studied at 293 and 77 K. The results have been explained on the basis of quantum-chemical calculations for both this molecule and its simpler analogs with respect to 6 H/1 H-isomerism of the 1,4-diazepine ring. The small difference between the ground-state energies for the 6 H and 1 H isomers makes tautomerism between them possible. It is shown that the electronic transitions with intramolecular charge transfer from the diazepine fragment to the macrocycle have relatively low energy, especially for the 1 H isomers. These states can be of considerable importance for photophysical and photochemical processes. A comparison of the theoretical and experimental electronic absorption spectra has confirmed that the diazepine ring in the substituted Mg-diazepinoporphyrazine is present in the 6 H-form. It is established that substitution of one benzene ring by a diazepine fragment leads to quenching of fluorescence, decreasing its quantum yield to 27% (for Mg-phthalocyanine 76%). 5-Phenyl-, 5,15-diphenyl-5,15-di(thiophen-2-yl)-, and 5,10,15,20-tetraphenyloctaalkyl-21H,23H-porphyrins in benzene-acetic acid mixtures are moderate bases (pK-0.27 to-2.48). There is no simple correlation between the basicity constants and any electronic or geometric structure parameter of their molecules due to the contributions of three factors to the basicity: distortion of the planar structure in highly substituted macrocycles and their protonated forms, positive charge delocalization over the conjugated bond system, and electronic effects of substituents. Density functional theory and time dependent density functional theory calculations at the level of LDA/BP86/TZ2P were performed systematically on several Ti(IV) complexes of porphyrazines and one phthalocyanine. We performed an analysis of the frontier molecular orbitals of the ground state electronic structures and also discuss in particular the good concordance of our results with the experimental data, which affords to predict the geometrical and optical properties of new complexes ( 3, 4, and 7). We also emphasize the characterization of the UV-vis absorption spectra and propose transitions that contribute to the Q and B bands. Some useful calculated properties in complexes 2, 3, and 7, like: high light absorption in the visible region of the spectra, transitions involved in these bands with a determined direction, charge separation, bigger highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) gaps than complexes 4 and 5, and the energy of their LUMO orbitals (that are higher than the lowest energy level of the conduction band of the TiO2) indicate that system complexes 2, 3, and 7 could act as light-harvesting sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). These proposals were made using a model of the previously experimentally known phthalocyanine, which was used as sensitizer in DSCs devices, comparing its electronic properties with the herein proposed sensitizers. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Electronic and geometric structures of Ca(II) and Zn(II) complexes with porphyrazine (Pz) and tetrakis(1,2,5-thiadiazole)porphyrazine (TTDPz) were investigated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and compared. The perimeter of the coordination cavity was found to be practically independent on the nature of a metal and a ligand. According to the results of the natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) calculations, Ca–N bonds possess larger ionic contributions as compared to Zn–N. The model electronic absorption spectra obtained with the use of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations indicate a strong bathochromic shift (~70 nm) of the Q-band with a change of Pz ligand by TTDPz for both Ca and Zn complexes.
