Abstract: Using the detector ARGUS at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have observed the decays Λc+ → Ξ−K+π+ and Λc+ → Ξ∗0K+ and obtained evidence for the decay Ξc0 → ΛKs0. All three of these decays are of interest as they provide information about W-exchange processes. The products of cross sections and branching ratios for Λc+ → Ξ−K+π+ and Λc+ → Ξ∗0K+ are (1.7±0.3±0.3) pb and (0.6±0.2±0.1) pb, respectively, which implies that (35±17) % of the Ξ−K+π+ final state is generated through a two-body decay via intermediate W-exchange. The product of production cross section and branching ratio for Ξc0 → Λ Ks0 is (2.1 ± 1.0 ± 0.6) pb.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II, flavour-dependent kaon production inB meson decays has been studied. Using the leptons as flavour tags, it has been possible to separately measure the multiplicities ofK+,K− andKs0 in inclusiveB decays and in semileptonicB decays. The kaon production in semileptonicB decays was further used to estimate the ratio of charmed decays over all decays, and thus also the fraction of charmlessB decays.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have observed a new charmed baryon state in the channel Λc+π+π−. (All references to a specific charged state also imply the charge conjugate state.) The mass of this state was measured to be (2626.6 ± 0.5 ± 1.5) MeV/c2. The product of the production cross section and branching ratio for this channel was determined to be (11.5 ± 2.5 ± 3.0) pb, and the natural width estimated to be smaller than 3.2 MeV/c2 at 90% CL.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II, we have determined the Michel parameters ϱ and ξ of τ → μν ν and τ → eν ν decays. From a data sample with 333 events/pb around s = 10 GeV , we select 3230 events e + e − → τ + τ − → (μ ± μ μ )( e ǂv v ) and determine ϱ from the e and μ momentum spectra and ξ from the correlations between e and μ momenta. For ϱ we obtain ϱτ→e = 0.79 ± 0.08 ± 0.06 and ϱτ→μ = 0.76 ± 0.08 in accordance with the V - A structure of the decays. The momentum correlations are only sensitive to the product ξτ→eξτ→μ. Setting ξτ→e = ξτ→μ, we obtain |ξτ| = 0.90 ± 0.15 ± 0.10 also in accordance with V - A. The updated decay fractions are B(τ → e v v ) = (17.5 ± 0.3 ± 0.5)% and B(τ → μv v ) = (17.4 ± 0.3 ± 0.5)% .

Abstract: The inclusive production cross sections of η′ (958) andf o (975) mesons are measured ine + e − annihilation in the nonresonant continuum around $$\sqrt s = 10$$ GeV and in decays of the υ resonances using the ARGUS detector. For η′ (958) mesons, a production ratio of η′ (958)/ηdir=0.35±0.24, with ηdir=η−BR(η′→ηX)·η′, is determined in direct υ(1S) decays, which can be partially explained by the pseudoscalar singlet/octet mixing. Forf o (975) production, we obtain a production ratio off o (975)/p(770)°=0.17±0.030 in direct υ(1S) decays. In its production features, thef o (975) behaves like an ordinary meson, though aK $$\bar K$$ molecule nature cannot be excluded. The substantial production yield of thef o (975) meson demonstrates the important effect of feeddown from mesons beyond the basic multiples on pseudoscalar and vector meson production.

Abstract: Using the detector ARGUS at thee + e − storage ring DORIS II, we have investigated inclusive momentum spectra of charged pions, kaons, and protons from decays of the υ(4S) meson. The kaon spectra have been measured in two independent ways, by coherently exploiting the detector's particle identification capabilities, and by detecting decays in-flight. The extracted mean multiplicities for charged hadrons are 7.17±0.05±0.14 pions, 1.56±0.03±0.05 kaons and 0.110±0.010±0.007 protons per υ(4S) decay, where pions and protons fromK and Δ decays have been subtracted.

Abstract: A search has been performed for rareB meson decays intoD − mesons arising fromb→u transitions,W exchange modes,B + annihilation processes, and decays where theD + is not produced via aW→c $$\bar s$$ quark pair coupling, using the ARGUS detector operating on the Ψ(4S) resonance at thee + e − storage ring DORIS II. Upper limits for individual decay modes are obtained. In addition, from a study ofD + l- correlations an upper limit of BR (B→D + l- X) (90% CL) is determined.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS IIe +e− storage ring we have studied the three-pion hadronic final state in the decay τ- → π-π-π+ v τ. From about 7500 events we conclude that the three-pion system is dominated by theJ P=1+ resonancea 1 (1260) decaying preferentially via ρ0π-. Our data restrict a possible ρπ contribution of three-pion states without intermediate resonances to less than 6% at 95% CL. Fitting a model by Isgur et al. to the data yields $$m_{a_1 } = (1.211 \pm 0.007 \pm _{0.0}^{0.050} ) GeV/c^2 $$ and $$\Gamma _{a_1 } = (0.446 \pm 0.0021 \pm _{0.0}^{0.140} ) GeV/c^2 $$ . The second errors reflect the model dependence of the result. This is the currently most significant determination of thea 1 resonance parameters. The ratio ofS- andD-wave amplitudes for the ρ0π- intermediate state of thea 1 − decay at the nominala 1 − mass was found to beD/S=−0.11±0.02. Using thisD/S ratio we update our former measurement of the parity violating asymmetry parameter $$\gamma _{AV} = 2g_A g_V /(g_A^2 + g_V^2 )$$ to 1.25±0.23± 0.08 0.15 . The branching ratio of the decay τ- → π-π-π+ v τ is determined to be Br(τ- → π-π-π+ v τ)=(6.8±0.1±0.5)%.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring, a new measurement of the mass of the τ lepton has been obtained. An analysis of the tau pseudomass spectrum for decays of the type τ− → π−π−π+ντ finds mτ = 1776.3±2.4±1.4 MeV/c2. This result also leads to an improvement of the upper limit on the ντ mass to mντ < 31 MeV/c2 at the 95% confidence level.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, a study ofB0$\bar B^0 $ oscillations has been performed using three different techniques. Besides the standard dilepton method, charge correlations betweenD* mesons and one or two leptons have also been investigated. The mixing parameterr is determined to be (20.6±7.0)%.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring, we have studied τ decays with one or three charged particles in the final state, obtaining the following values for the branching ratios: BR(τ−→e − $$\bar v_e v_\tau $$ )=(17.3±0.4±0.5)% BR(τ−→μ− $$\bar v_\mu v_\tau $$ )=(17.2±0.4±0.5)%,BR(τ−→π− v π)+BR(τ−→K − v π)=(11.7±0.6±0.8)% and BR(π−→3-prong)=(13.3±0.3±0.8)%. These measurements confirm the present world averages with a precision, in each case, comparable to the error on the combination of all previous results.

Abstract: An analysis of the decay τ-→π-π0vτ has been performed using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring. The branching ratio has been determined to be Br(τ-→π-π0vτ=(22.6±0.4±0.9)%. The shape of the π-π0 invariant mass spectrum is found to be in good agreement with the predictions obtained using the conserved vector current (CVC) hypothesis, suggesting that the π-π0 system is produced in aJP=1− state. An analysis of the measured decay angular distribution of the pions with respect to the flight direction of the π-π0 system demonstrates the vector nature of the coupling at the τvτ vertex. With the assumption of zerovτ mass thevτ spin has been shown to be$J_{v_\tau}= \tfrac{1}{2} $.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at thee + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have observed the decaysD +→K − K 0π+π+ andD + →K − K 0π+π+. The branching ratios were determined to be BR(D +→K − K 0π+π+)=(1.0±0.5±0.3)% and BR(D + →K − K 0π+π+)/BR(D + →φπ+)=1.2±0.2±0.2. These decays are found to proceed mostly via the $$\bar K*^0 K*^ + $$ decay channel, with BR(D +→ $$\bar K*^0 K*^ + $$ )=2.6±0.8±0.7)% and BR(D + → $$\bar K*^0 K*^ + $$ )/BR(D + →φπ+)=1.5±0.4±0.4.

Abstract: We have measured theR value in non-resonante+e− annihilation using the ARGUS detector at the storage ring DORIS II. At a centre-of-mass energy$\sqrt s = 9.36$ GeV the ratio of the hadronic cross-section to the μ-pair cross section in lowest order QED has been determined to beR=3.46±0.03±0.13. In addition, we have measured the charged-particle multiplicities in non-resonant hadron production at$\sqrt s = 10.47$ GeV just below theB$\bar B$ threshold and in ϒ (4S) resonance decays. For the average charged-particle multiplicities in continuum events and ϒ(4S)→B$\bar B$ decays we obtain cont=8.35±0.02±0.20 and ϒ(4s)=10.81±0.05±0.23.

Abstract: The production ofDS+ mesons inB meson decays, and inq$\bar q$ continuum events, has been studied with the ARGUS detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II. In addition to the measurement of inclusiveDS+ production in γ(4S)→B$\bar B$ decays, all eight two-body decay modesB→DS(*)D(*) have been measured with branching ratios between 1% and 3%. By comparing our inclusive and exclusive results to predictions of heavy quark effective theory, a value of (267±28) MeV × [2.7%/BR(Ds+→φπ+)]1/2 is obtained for the weak decay constant fDS(*), averaged overDS+ andDS*+ mesons.

B mesons were produced in 209 000 decays of γ (4S). Assuming electron-muon universality, we obtain a value for the branching ratio of BR ( B − → D ∗0 l − λ )= (5.8 ± 1.4 ± 1.3)% .

Abstract: Direct observations of the semileptonic decay of Λc+ in the decay channels Λc+→Λe+X and Λc+→Λμ+X have been made using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e+e− storage ring. The cross section times branching ratio were found to be σ(e+e−→Λc+X)·BR(Λc+→Λe+X)=4.20±1.28±0.71 pb and σ(e+e−→Λc+X)·BR(Λc+→Λμ+X)=3.91±2.02±0.90 pb.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at thee+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have measured the inclusive production ofD0,D+ andD*(2010)+ mesons inB decays and in nonresonante+e− annihilation around 10.6 GeV. The inclusive branching ratios forB decays toD0,D+ andD*+ mesons are found to be (52.2±8.2±3.5)%, (27.2±6.3±3.5)% and (34.8±6.0±3.5)% respectively. Thus,D0 andD+ production account for about 70% of the charm produced inB decays, neglectingb→u contributions to the total width. The production cross sections and momentum spectra for continuume+e− annihilation are also presented.

No evidence for these decays was found and upoer limits are quoted. These numbers represent important constraints of flavour-changing neutral currents in B meson decays and probe the heavy-quark and Higgs sectors of the standard model.

Abstract: An analysis of the decay τ− → π−π−π+π0ντ has been performed with the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring. From a study of the two pion subsystems we have found first evidence for the decays τ− → ϱ0π−π0ντ, τ− → ϱ −π+π−ντ, and τ− → ϱ+π−π−ντ with relative contributions to the decay τ− → π−π−π+π0ντ of 0.30 ± 0.04, 0.26 ± 0.05, and 0.10 ± 0.03, respectively. The fraction of the subchannel τ− → ωπ−ντ has been determined to be 0.33 ± 0.05. The production of ϱ mesons is enhanced by a factor of 1.9 ± 0.3 over that of ω mesons. We conclude that in more than 81% (95% CL) of all τ− → π−π−π+π0ντ decays either a ϱ or ω meson is produced.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e + e − storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have studied semileptonic charmed meson decays through ф- and K ∗0 -electron correlations in continuum production. Evidence for the decay D − s →фe − v has been observed, with a branching ratio relative to the channel D − s →фπ − determined to be 0.57±0.15±0.15. The decay D − →K ∗0 e − v was also seen, with a value of 0.55±0.08±0.10 extracted for the branching ratio relative to the channel D − →K + π − π − . The ratio of the two measurements, after application of SU(3) corrections, implies a branching ratio for D − s →фπ − of (2.4±1.0)%.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e+ e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY we have updated our result on charmless semileptonic B decays and searched for direct evidence for b→u transitions through reconstruction of complete events. This approach has successfully identified two ϒ (4S) events which contain B meson decays to a non-charm final state. In one case, a B0 meson is found in the channel π + μ − ν , while in the other a decay B+→ωμ+ν is seen. These events show that the previously observed signal of charmless semileptonic B decays is due to b→u transitions from which we obtain | V ub V cb | = 0.11±0.012 using the model of Altarelli et al.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at thee + e − storage ring DORIS II, we have measuredB decays into exclusive final states containing aD orD * meson plus several pions, or containing aJ/ψ or ψ′ meson plus a strange particle. Some of these channels have not been seen before, while others represent updated measurements of previous results. The branching ratios are compared with the predictions of the model of Bauer, Stech and Wirbel. Using the cleanest decay channels, the mass of the charged and neutralB meson are found to bem B −=(5280.5±1.0±2.0) MeV/c2 andm B 0=(5279.6±0.7±2.0) MeV/c2 respectively, yielding a mass differencem B 0−m B − =(−0.9±1.2±0.5) MeV/c2.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e + e − storage ring we measured for the first time the τ neutrino helicity from a parity violating asymmetry in the τ decay into three charged pions. From the measured asymmetry we derived the normalized product of the axial and vector coupling constant 2 g A g v / ( g A 2 + g V 2 ) = 1.14±0.34 −0.17 0.34 , which is in good agreement with the standard model prediction.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have observed production of the charmed-strange baryon Ξc+ and its neutral isospin partner, the Ξc0. The Ξc+ was reconstructed in the final state Ξ−π+π+, while the Ξc0 was seen in decay to Ξ−π+ and Ξ−π+π+π−. The average Ξc fragmentation spectrum has been determined, as well as the production cross section times branching ratio for each decay mode. The charged and neutral masses were measured to be 2465.1 ± 3.6 ± 1.9 MeV/c2 and 2472.1 ± 2.7 ± 1.6 MeV/c2 respectively, corresponding to a mass-splitting, M(Ξc+) − M(Ξc0), of −7.0±4.5±2.2 MeV/c2.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e+e− storage ring we have studied the electron and muon energy spectra in τ − → e − ν ν and τ − →μ − ν ν decays. The measured value of the Michel parameter, ρ=0.742±0.035±0.020, is in good agreement with a standard V-A coupling at the τ-ντ-W vertex. Pure V, A and V + A couplings are completely excluded by this measurement. Upper limits have been obtained for two-body tau decays, including final states with a Goldstone boson.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we searched for b→u transitions in exclusive hadronic B meson decays. A systematic analysis of B decays into pions has been performed for decay modes with 2–7 pions in the final state. In none of the decays a positive signal was observed. The upper limits obtained on various branching ratios are consistent with the current model predictions.

Abstract: We report on a high statistics study of π0 and η production in continuum events and in direct decays of the Γ(1S) and Γ(2S) resonances. The measured production rates per event are$\left\langle {n_{\pi ^0 } } \right\rangle$=3.22 ± 0.07 ± 0.31 (3.97 ± 0.23 ± 0.38) and 〈nη〉=0.19 ± 0.04 ± 0.04 (0.40 ± 0.14 ± 0.09) for continuum events (direct Γ(1S) decays).

Abstract: We report a measurement of the production of antideuterons d in e+e− annihilation at centre-of-mass energies around 10 GeV using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II storage ring. We observe an enhancement of d production in direct hadronic ϒ(1S) and ϒ(2S) resonance decays. From 21 events width a d candidate the inclusive cross section 1σdirhad · dσdp and the production rate of antideuterons are determined. A production rate of (6.0±2.0±0.6) × 10-5d per direct hadronic ϒ decay and a 90% CL upper limit of 1.7 × 10−5d per e+e−→qq continuum event are obtained. These results are related to antiproton production through a simple model.

Abstract: A detailed study of the lepton momentum spectrum in υ(4S) decays has been made using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e+e− storage ring at DESY. In the region from 2.3 to 2.6 GeV/c, which is above the endpoint for contributions from B decays via b→c transitions, we observe 41±10 events in excess of known backgrounds. These events are interpreted as a signal for b→u transitions. A model dependent value of 0.10±0.01 is obtained for the ratio of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements |Vub|/|Vcv|, using the Altarelli et al. model.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the e+e− storage ring DORIS II, we have measured the average polarization of D∗+ mesons originating from exclusive decays B 0 → D ∗+ l − ν . By comparing the D∗+ decay angular distribution to a functional form 1 + α cos2≡, we determine α to be α=0.7±0.9. This value of α leads to a ratio of longitudinal to transverse decay with Γl/ΓT=0.85±0.45, which allows the determination, |Vcb|=0.052±0.011. The importance of the transverse helicity component is manifested in the q2 and lepton spectra,which are also presented.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the DORIS II e + e − storage ring at DESY, we have obtained evidence for a new charmed-strange meson which decays into D *+ K 0 . Its mass is observed to be 2535.9±0.6±2.0 MeV/ c 2 and its width to be less than 4.6 MeV/ c 2 at the 90% confidence level. No structure is observed at this mass in the D + K 0 invariant mass spectrum, which suggests that an unnatural spin-parity is preferred.

Abstract: Using the ARGUS detector at the electron-positron storage ring DORIS II at DESY, we have measured the branching ratios of theD 0 meson decays into $$\overline {K^0 } \omega $$ , $$\overline {K^0 } \eta $$ and $$\overline {K^{*0} } \eta $$ relative to theK −π+ mode. Using the known branching ratio Br(D 0→Kπ+)=(4.2±0.4±0.4)% we find $$Br(D^0 \to \overline {K^0 } \omega ) = (4.2 \pm 1.6 \pm 0.9)\% ,Br(D^0 \to \overline {K^0 } \eta )< 2.7\% $$ (90% CL) and $$Br(D^0 \to \overline {K^{*0} } \eta )< 2.9\% $$ (90% CL).

Abstract: The correlations betweenp $\bar p$,$\Lambda \bar \Lambda $,$\Xi ^ - \bar \Lambda $ and$\Lambda (1520)\bar \Lambda $ baryons have been measured ine + e − continuum events and in direct Ψ decays. The observed correlations exclude the production of point-like diquark-antidiquark pairs as the dominant source of baryons. Information concerning angular momentum compensation follows from the observed$\Lambda (1520)\bar \Lambda $ correlation.

Abstract: Using data collected with the ARGUS detector, we have performed a decay angular analysis of the enhancement, previously known as the D∗ (2420), seen in the final state D∗(2010)+π−. We thereby exhibit that the observed broad structure is actually due to two relatively narrow resonances, one of which is identified as the D∗(2459)0, while the massof the other is measured to be (2414±2±5) MeV/c2. The results of the analysis are in good agreement with the interpretation of the two states as L=1 D mesons of spin-parities 2+ and 1+ respectively.
