Although previous researchers have shown that attention is preferentially allocated during situations involving both threat and selfrelevant information, it is unclear which information type requires more cognitive resources. We compared the automatic processing of threat and self-relevant stimuli using the no-report oddball paradigm. Participants looked at images on a computer screen that displayed fighting with opponents or interacting with friends or customers. The body action of the person depicted was performed either toward the viewing participant or toward other people. Participants watched without making an explicit response, and event-related potentials were measured with electroencephalography. We found that threat (vs. selfrelevant) information elicited a larger P300 amplitude, and for nonthreatening events the P300 amplitude was larger for self-relevant than other-relevant stimuli. These results indicate that threat (vs. selfrelevant) information demands more cognitive resources, possibly because people prioritize survival.

The reaction time-based concealed information test (RT CIT) typically uses three types of stimuli: 1) probe (i.e., crime-related item), 2) irrelevant (i.e., crime-unrelated item) and 3) target (i.e., an irrelevant item assigned a unique response so as to ensure attention to the test). Lukacs, et al., (2017) introduced familiarity-related filler items to the RT CIT, enhancing the efficacy of the test for both single and multiple probe (per block) protocols. Our study aims to A) replicate the effects of familiarity-related filler items on the RT CIT, B) use P300 to investigate the mechanisms of the fillers-related enhancement effect on the RT CIT, C) investigate whether these fillers can enhance the efficacy of the typical P300-based CIT, and D) explore the effects of fillers on the semantic and episodic versions of the P300 and RT CITs. We replicated a clear fillers-related enhancement of the RT CIT (N = 38 for Fillers, N = 37 for No Fillers). Semantic and Episodic experiments were enhanced equally-well by filler items. No effect of fillers was observed on P300 amplitude for CIT stimuli, however, an interaction involving P300 latency suggests that fillers facilitated the processing of Semantic information over Episodic information. Our study independently replicates a valuable improvement of the traditional RT CIT, investigates the potential mechanisms of this enhancement effect, and demonstrates important differences between the P300 and RT CITs.

Aim We previously reported abnormal P300 and N200 in a visual oddball task, and progressive P300 amplitude reduction at 1-year follow-up in patients with first-episode schizophrenia. P300 reduction as well as intact P1/N1 were also observed in clinical high-risk subjects (CHR), but whether or not these components change over time is unknown. This study evaluates, longitudinally, the visual P300, as well as P1, N1, and N200, in CHR. Methods Visual event-related potentials (ERP) were recorded twice, once at baseline and once at 1-year follow-up in CHR (n = 19) and healthy comparison subjects (HC; n = 28). Participants silently counted infrequent target stimuli ('x') among standard stimuli ('y') presented on the screen while the 64-channel electroencephalogram was recorded. Results No CHR converted to psychosis from baseline to 1-year follow-up in this study. Visual P300 amplitude was reduced and the latency was delayed significantly in CHR at both time points compared with HC. Furthermore, CHR subjects who had more positive symptoms showed more amplitude reduction at both time points. P1, N1, and N200 did not differ between groups. Conclusion Visual P300 amplitude was found to be reduced in CHR individuals compared with HC. We note that this finding is in subjects who did not convert to psychosis at 1-year follow-up. The association between visual P300 amplitude and symptoms suggests that for CHR who often experience clinical symptoms and seek medical care, visual P300 may be an important index that reflects the pathophysiological impairment underlying such clinical states.

Interruption generally has a negative effect on performance by affecting working memory (WM). However, the neural mechanism of interruption has yet to be understood clearly, and previous studies have largely ignored the role of fatigue state. To address these issues, the present study explores the behavioral and electrophysiological effects of interruption on WM performance using electroencephalography (EEG) data. The moderating effect of fatigue is also explored. The participants performed spatial 2-back tasks with math task interruption, suspension interruption, and non-interruption under different fatigue states. The results show that interruption led to increased alpha activity and P300 amplitude, indicating inhibitory control to interference from irrelevant information. Analysis of P200 amplitude revealed that interruption affected attentional reallocation when resuming the primary task. Increased theta power indicated an increased demand for information maintenance during the interruption. A speeding-up effect was discovered after interruption; however, fatigue impaired cognitive ability and further exacerbated the negative effects of interruption on WM and behavioral performance. These findings contribute to a better understanding of cognitive activity during the interruption and of the interaction with fatigue, and provide further support for the theory of memory for goals (MFG).

Results of the clinical and neurophysiological examinations of 42 workers with operating history at the chemical plant exposed to vinyl chloride (VC) are presented. The purpose of research was the identification ofpeculiarities of clinical manifestations and disorders of the functional activity of the brain in workers at the vinyl chloride production, with taking into account the exposure toxic load (ETL). There were made clinical and electroencephalographic examinations with the detection of cognitive evoked potentials (CEP) and statistical analysis of results with the use of the Mann-Whitney U-test, Fisher’s F-test, calculation of Spearman’s correlation coefficient. The features in clinical picture of the pathology of the nervous system were detected in the form of asthenic disorders with cognitive impairment and autonomic dysfunction syndrome. There was established the increase in the cognitive impairment rate (p = 0.03), the decline in a-EEG activity (p = 0.01) and the worsening of indices of the amplitude (p = 0.011) and latency (p = 0,05) of CEP in extremely high level of ETL in comparison with same indices in the group with moderately high ETL. In the first group there was revealed a statistically significant exceedance of the frequency of hypertension - by 1.6 times, skin diseases - by 9 times, chronic subatrophic rhino-pharyngitis by 1.4 times in comparison with cases from the second group. In the group with moderately high level of ETL there was established the statistically significant inverse correlationship between the ETL and the index of P300 amplitude from the left side (r = -0.38, p = 0.019) and in the group with extremely high level ETL - between ETL and index of the β2 - rhythm (r = - 0.73, p = 0.0008).

Selective attention refers to the selecting and preferential processing of specific information while simultaneously suppressing irrelevant distractors, activities linked to various cognitive skills and academic achievements. The influence of essential oils on the cognition of humans has been extensively explored. However, the effects of essential oils on human selective attention and the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. In the present study, participants were divided into a “blended essential oil” group and a “no essential oil” group and enrolled on a negative priming task, including a control condition and a negative priming condition. The event-related potential technique was used to examine the brain mechanisms underlying the blended essential oil effects on human selective attention. Behavioral results showed that individuals responded more quickly in the negative priming condition when exposed to the blended essential oil. In addition, the blended essential oil eliminated the differences in the P300 amplitude in the postcentral area of the brain between the negative priming condition and the control condition. Moreover, the blended essential oil led to stronger functional connectivity during the task. The present study thus suggests that blended essential oil can significantly change brain activity and functional connections in human beings, which may improve human selective attention.

The aim of the current study is to reveal the influence of prior associations between feedback stimuli and outcomes, in everyday life, on the early and late evaluative processing of outcomes. Participants were subjected to a simple gambling task while their electroencephalograms were recorded. Over two conditions, participants received congruent and incongruent feedback stimuli during the task. Feedback stimuli previously associated with positive outcomes were paired with monetary gain in the congruent condition and paired with monetary loss in the incongruent condition. We analyzed feedback-related negativity and P300 event-related brain potentials, as indices of early and late outcome evaluation. The results show that monetary loss, compared to gain, elicited larger feedback-related negativity, irrespective of congruency. However, the feedback-related negativity effect was delayed in the incongruent condition and an increased P300 amplitude was observed for congruent-loss outcomes. The valence of stimuli formed through experiences differently modulate early and late processes of outcome evaluation. The present study emphasizes the need to consider the stimulus valence to understand processes of outcome evaluation.

The scientific world is increasingly interested in motivation, primarily due to the suspected impact on decision-making abilities, particularly in uncertain conditions. To explore this plausible relationship, 28 healthy participants were included in the study and performed decision-making and motivational tasks while their neural activity was recorded. All participants performed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and were split into two groups based on their score, one favorable group with 14 participants who performed advantageously and one undecided group with 14 participants who failed to develop the correct strategy on the IGT. In addition, all participants performed the Effort Expenditure for Reward Task (EEfRT), which defines the motivational level of each participant by the effort that participants agree to do in function of reward magnitudes and probabilities to receive these reward (10, 50, and 90%). The completion of both tasks allowed for the exploration of the relationship between the motivational level and decision-making abilities. The EEfRT was adapted to electroencephalography (EEG) recordings to explore how motivation could influence reward experience. Behavioral results showed no difference in EEfRT performances on the whole task between the two groups' performances on the IGT. However, there was a negative correlation between the difficulty to develop an optimal strategy on the IGT and the percentage of difficult choices at the 90% condition on the EEfRT. Each probability condition has been previously associated to different motivational and emotional states, with the 90% condition associated to the reward sensitivity. This behavioral result leads to the hypothesis that reward sensitivity may induce an inability to develop an optimal strategy on the IGT. Group analysis demonstrated that only the undecided group showed a P300 during the processing of the outcome, whereas the favorable group showed a blunted P300. Similarly, there was a negative correlation between the P300 amplitude and the ability to develop an optimal strategy on the IGT. In conclusion, behavioral and neuronal data provides evidence that the propensity to focus only on the immediate outcomes is related to the development of an inefficient strategy on the IGT, without influence of motivation.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD) is the most common psychiatric disorder of childhood and has been extensively researched using EEG technology. Within this literature, one of the most widely examined measures has been the theta/beta ratio. The theta/beta ratio was initially hypothesised to represent the arousal mechanism. However, subsequent research has shown this to be inaccurate and it was hypothesised that the ratio represents cognitive processing capacity. To examine that hypothesis, this study aimed to test the relationship between the P300 and the theta/beta ratio. The P300, absolute alpha and the theta/beta ratio were measured at Fz, Cz and Pz, and correlated in a group of 47 normal adults. A significant positive correlation was found between P300 latency and the theta/beta ratio. No relationship was found between P300 amplitude and the theta/beta ratio. P300 amplitude, but not latency, significantly correlated with alpha power. These results support the hypothesis that the theta/beta ratio is a marker of cognitive processing capacity.

The near-miss effect in gambling refers to a losing situation that is (or perceived to be) close to a win by the gambler. This effect is one of the many cognitive distortions that can occur during gambling games.The main objective of the present study was to analyze the electrophysiological correlates of the near-miss effect via an event related potential (ERP)study examining four distinct gambling outcomes: win, full miss, near-miss before the payline, and near-miss after the payline. This study comprised 23 healthy voluntary participants (10 women) with ages ranging between 19 and 34 years (M= 22.5; SD= 3.65). All participants completed the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) and played a computerized slot machine, programed to induce the near-miss effect and specifically designed for an ERP study. By splitting the near-miss effect in two subtypes (before and after the payline), increased feedback-related negativity (FRN) was found for the near-misses after the payline in comparison to losses and also to near-misses before the payline. Results also indicated an increased P300 amplitude for the near-misses before the payline compared both with losses and with near-misses after the payline. The results suggest that both FRN and P300 present different sensitivities to near-miss subtypes, suggesting a payline effect that is not demonstrated when the data of near-misses before and after the payline are analyzed together. This is the first study to analyze the effect of the near-miss subtype in an ERP study and confirms the findings of previous behavioral studies.

Prior reproductive experience, or parity, may contribute to differential neural responses to infant stimuli during pregnancy. We examined the P300 elicited by viewing infant and adult faces, as well as houses, in women pregnant with their first child and compared their neural responses to women who had at least one child prior to their current pregnancy. We found the P300 amplitude was larger in women pregnant with their first child as compared to pregnant women who had previously had children. This larger P300 was observed in response to all visual stimuli and was not specific to infant faces. Taken together, these findings indicate increased sensitivity toward social and non-social stimuli in pregnancy and indicate the importance of measuring parity in social neuroscience studies of pregnancy and motherhood.

In this study, fused electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) techniques were utilized to examine the relationship between the ERP (event-related potential) component P300 and fNIRS hemodynamic signals for high-accuracy deception detection. During the performance of a modified concealed information test (CIT) task, a series of Chinese names were presented, which served as the target, irrelevant, or the probe stimuli for both the guilty and innocent groups. For participants in the guilty group, the probe stimulus was their individual name, whereas for the innocent group, the probe stimulus was one irrelevant name. In particular, data from concurrent fNIRS and ERP recordings were carefully inspected for participants from the two groups. Interestingly, we discovered that for the guilty group, the probe stimulus elicited significantly higher P300 amplitude at parietal site and also evoked significantly stronger oxyhemoglobin (HbO) concentration changes in the bilateral superior frontal gyrus and bilateral middle frontal gyrus than the irrelevant stimuli. However, this is not the case for the innocent group, in which participants exhibited no significant differences in both ERP and fNIRS measures between the probe and irrelevant stimuli. More importantly, our findings also demonstrated that the combined ERP and fNIRS feature was able to differentiate the guilty and innocent groups with enhanced sensitivity, in which AUC (the area under Receiver Operating Characteristic curve) is 0.94 for deception detection based on the combined indicator, much higher than that based on the ERP component P300 only (0.85) or HbO measure only (0.84).

Highlights • Acute exercise enhances P300 amplitude in children with ADHD and healthy peers. • Exercise-induced benefits for inhibition are influenced by exercise modality. • Children with ADHD benefit most from aerobic exercise. • Aerobic and coordinative exercise had similar effects in healthy controls., The current body of evidence suggests that an aerobic exercise session has a beneficial effect on inhibitory control, whereas the impact of coordinative exercise on this executive function has not yet been examined in children with ADHD. Therefore, the present study aims to investigate the acute effects of aerobic and coordinative exercise on behavioral performance and the allocation of attentional resources in an inhibitory control task. Using a cross-over design, children with ADHD-combined type and healthy comparisons completed a Flanker task before and after 20 min moderately-intense cycling exercise, coordinative exercise and an inactive control condition. During the task, stimulus-locked event-related potentials were recorded with electroencephalography. Both groups showed an increase of P300 amplitude and decrease of reaction time after exercise compared to the control condition. Investigating the effect of exercise modality, aerobic exercise led to greater increases of P300 amplitude and reductions in reaction time than coordinative exercise in children with ADHD. The findings suggest that a single exercise bout improves inhibitory control and the allocation of attentional resources. There were some indications that an aerobic exercise session seems to be more efficient than coordinative exercise in reducing the inhibitory control deficits that persist in children with ADHD.

According to psychological studies, the most fundamental personality is the extraversion personality. Most studies looking at differences between extroverts and introverts are pen and paper based studies. However, in a few studies, electrophysiological signals were involved. In this paper, we reviewed studies examining extraversion personality using electroencephalography (EEG) and event-related potentials (ERP). It was found that some of the EEG studies claimed that extroverts and introverts can be differentiated using baseline EEG, while some others claimed otherwise. Conflicting findings were also observed in the ERP studies; higher/lower P300 amplitude in extroverts compared to that of introverts in visual stimuli tasks. These various findings are probably due to differences in their experimental protocols, sample size, or age of subjects. Other possible reasons include no consideration given on the main feature of extraversion and the studies only focused on EEG power spectral analysis. We are thus suggesting for future investigations to involve the main feature such as sociability and/or to incorporate more EEG features in the analysis to produce more robust and reliable results. This review constitutes a guidance for research on brain-related conditions of extroverts and introverts and shall be useful in many areas.

To investigate the value of MoCA and auditory P300 as a cognitive assessment tool in chinese idiopathic inflammatory-demyelinating diseases (IIDDs), eighty three consecutive patients with IIDDs and thirteen sex- and age-matched healthy controls were recruited in the study. MMSE, MoCA and auditory P300 potential were administrated to each participant. The percentage of cognitive impairment in IIDDs patients was 24.1% by using MMSE, while the percentage was 81.9% by using MoCA. The majority of IIDDs participants had MMSE scores in the normal range. In contrast, few IIDDs participants scored in the normal range on the MoCA. Age, EDSS and depression correlated negatively with the total score of MoCA and MMSE. Years of education correlated positively with MoCA and MMSE. ADEM patients scored lower on all MoCA subtests. Prolonged latency P300 which negatively correlated with MoCA and reduced P300 amplitude which positively correlated with MoCA were detected in IIDDs patients. Thus MoCA is superior to the MMSE as a cognitive impairment scan tool and P300 is useful for detecting cogntive deficiency in chinese IIDDs.

The present study examined the mechanisms underlying stimulus sequence effects on the parietal P300 and frontal P3a elicited by infrequent targets in an oddball paradigm and compared these effects between young and older adults. Fifty young and 50 healthy older adults completed a simple visual oddball task including an infrequent (20%) target stimulus. A temporo-spatial principal component (PCA) analysis was used to disentangle the parietal P300 and frontal P3a from overlapping ERP components. The typical age-related anterior-shift of the P300 was, according to the PCA, due to a disproportionately large contribution of a frontal P3a in older adults. Up to about five successive standards preceding a target, the results replicated the typical increase in parietal P300 amplitude to targets with increases in preceding standards. A novel finding was that with further increases in preceding standards, P300 amplitude to targets gradually decreased. This pattern is consistent with a combination of relatively automatic, temporary expectations and higher level, conscious expectations driving P300 sequential effects, with different dynamics over the course of successively presented standards. However, an expectancy-based account of these sequential effects was challenged by an analogous analysis of RTs. Sequential effects on the frontal P3a differed from the parietal P300: The P3a was largest when a target followed another target and continually decreased with the number of intervening standards. Notably, sequential effects were strikingly similar for young and older adults, and implications for the functional significance of morphological changes in P300 due to aging are discussed.

Individuals with current depression show reduced amplitude of the P300 component of the stimulus-locked event-related potential (ERP)-an effect most often examined in oddball tasks. Although imperative stimuli in response-monitoring paradigms (e.g., the flanker task), also elicit a P300, it is unclear whether a blunted P300 can be observed in depression in these tasks. Moreover, the P300 overlaps with the correct-response negativity (CRN) and error-related negativity (ERN), and is similar to the error positivity (Pe)-response-locked ERPs frequently examined in flanker tasks. The current study examined the stimulus-locked P300 and response-monitoring ERPs on error (i.e., ERN, Pe) and correct responses (i.e., CRN) during an arrowhead flanker task in 72 individuals with a current depressive disorder and 42 never depressed healthy individuals. Consistent with findings from oddball tasks, P300 amplitude was reduced among participants with depression. Further, results indicated increased ERN and CRN, and decreased Pe, in depression. However, when the blunted P300 was included in analyses, group differences in response-monitoring ERPs were no longer evident. Accordingly, P300 amplitudes were correlated negatively with the ERN/CRN and positively with Pe in both groups. A blunted P300 in depression can be observed in speeded response tasks, and can produce apparent increases in ERN and CRN due to ERP component overlap. Further, reduced Pe in participants with depression may reflect a reduced P300 to error commission. These data highlight the central role of reduced P300 in clinical depression, and demonstrate that this effect can be observed across both stimulus- and response-locked ERPs in speeded response tasks.

Onset primacy is a robust behavioural phenomenon whereby humans identify the sudden appearance of an object in the environment (onset) with greater speed and accuracy than other types of visual change, such as the sudden disappearance of an object from the environment (offset). The default mode hypothesis explains this phenomenon by postulating that onset detection is the default processing mode of the attentional system. The present study aimed to test this by investigating whether onset primacy is also reflected on a neural level, as indicated by the comparative efficiency of neural processing for onsets, using electroencephalography. It was hypothesised that this relative efficiency would be reflected in the P300 event-related potential as a greater mean amplitude with an earlier peak across temporal, parietal, and occipital regions during onset detection, compared to offset detection. This prediction was tested through a change detection task in which participants were required to identify the location of onset or offset between paired images of naturalistic scenes. Results showed that P300 amplitude and latency differed between onset and offset conditions in the anticipated directions, supporting the default mode hypothesis. These results suggest that the P300 is a neural marker of onset primacy in visual change detection.

The so-called P300-BCI provided high information transfer rates if stimuli are presented in the visual modality in healthy participants and those with severe neurological disease alike. Visual presentation of stimuli constitutes a severe obstacle to those with no control of eye movement. The following study investigated a potential alternative to using any sensory modality for stimulation. Instead healthy participants were instructed to imagine the traditional flashing matrix. To facilitate such imagery, stimuli were first presented sequentially in the visual and auditory domain. In Experiment 1 (N = 10) we found a decline in performance when stimuli were presented sequentially as compared to randomly, but still a P300 was identifiable albeit lower in amplitude. In Experiment 2 (N = 23) the matrix was still presented as a support, but no visual stimulation occurred. Instead the stimulation frequency was indicated by auditory clicks in condition 1 and removed altogether in condition 2. The P300 amplitude was significantly higher in target than non-target stimulations in both conditions, and higher in the no stimulation condition than in the auditory condition. Selection accuracy was above chance level for 8 participants in the auditory and for 10 in the no stimulation condition. Taken together results indicate that a P300 can be generated by imagined stimulation, but the paradigm requires further investigation and improvement.

The ultimatum game (UG) is an endowment sharing game in which a proposer suggests a division of an asset to a recipient, who must accept or reject it. Economic studies showed that despite recipients usually rejecting unfair offers, perception and reaction to unfairness are highly dependent on who is the proposer. Event-related potentials (ERPs) commonly detected in UG games are the medial frontal negativity (MFN), a component detected in recipients facing unfair offers, and the P300, a component related to attentional and memory processes. Given this, we aimed to investigate the behavioral and ERP responses of healthy people playing the UG game with Down syndrome (DS) and typical development (TD) proposers. Nineteen subjects participated in this study. The UG behavioral data were similar to previous studies. ERP analysis showed no MFN in participants facing unfair offers. A higher P300 amplitude was detected when participants faced fair offers from TD compared to DS fair offers. We also found a positive correlation between P300 amplitude for TD offers and self-esteem scale score. Together these findings indicate that insertion of an atypical player in the UG led to changes in participants' perception and expectancy of the game.

Past research has found that P300 is smaller in depressed adults. Research examining P300 in relation to adolescent depression is more inconsistent; most studies fail to find P300 differences between currently depressed adolescents and controls. Previous studies have not examined the potential predictive utility of P300 in regard to adolescent depression. Therefore, the current study investigated the relationship between P300 amplitude and depression symptoms at baseline and two years later in a sample of 199 female adolescents. At baseline, participants completed measures of depression, followed by a speeded response task (flanker) while EEG was recorded. Two years later, participants completed the same depression measures. Reduced baseline P300 predicted increases in depression at two-year follow-up. Baseline P300 related particularly to two-year anhedonia and negative self-esteem symptoms. Our study suggest that reduced P300 amplitude can be utilized as a potential risk marker for adolescents at risk for developing increases in depressive symptoms.

Sustained attention is crucial for higher-order cognition and real-world activities. The idea that tactile training improves sustained attention is appealing and has clinical significance. The aim of this study was to explore whether tactile training could improve visual sustained attention. Using 128-channel electroencephalography (EEG), we found that participants with tactile training outperformed non-trainees in the accuracy and calculation efficiency measured by the Math task. Furthermore, trainees demonstrated significantly decreased omission error measured by the sustained attention to response task (SART). We also found that the improvements in behavioral performance were associated with parietal P300 amplitude enhancements. EEG source imaging analyses revealed stronger brain activation among the trainees in the prefrontal and sensorimotor regions at P300. These results suggest that the tactile training can improve sustained attention in young adults, and the improved sustained attention following training may be due to more effective attentional resources allocation. Our findings also indicate the use of a noninvasive tactile training paradigm to improve cognitive functions (e.g., sustained attention) in young adults, potentially leading to new training and rehabilitative protocols.

This study investigated the influence of target probability on the neural response to target detection in free viewing visual search. Participants were asked to indicate the number of targets (one or two) among distractors in a visual search task while EEG and eye movements were co-registered. Target probability was manipulated by varying the set size of the displays between 10, 22, and 30 items. Fixation-related potentials time-locked to first target fixations revealed a pronounced P300 at the centro-parietal cortex with larger amplitudes for set sizes 22 and 30 than for set size 10. With increasing set size, more distractor fixations preceded the detection of the target, resulting in a decreased target probability and, consequently, a larger P300. For distractors, no increase of P300 amplitude with set size was observed. The findings suggest that set size specifically affects target but not distractor processing in overt serial visual search.

An individual's sense of personal responsibility is crucial for adaptive functioning in ever-changing social situations. This study investigated how the sense of personal responsibility affected the neural dynamics of anticipating one's own pain and another person's pain, using EEG. Participants played a cooperation game in which either the participant (self-context) or the confederate (other-context) received a mild electric shock whenever one of them erred. At the anticipatory stage of pain, feedback-related negativity (FRN) and P300 were sensitive to the degree of responsibility in both contexts. The FRN was more negative when the participant had full responsibility (only the participant had erred) than when the participant shared responsibility with the confederate (both had erred) or had no responsibility (only the confederate had erred), and shared responsibility elicited more negative FRN than no responsibility. Having no responsibility produced larger P300 amplitudes than having shared or full responsibility, whereas there was no significant difference in P300 amplitude between the shared responsibility and the full responsibility conditions. When the shock was delivered to the participants, the P2 was smaller when there was no responsibility than when there was shared or full responsibility. When participants observed the painful facial expressions of the confederates, the P300 was not sensitive to responsibility level. Our results suggest that responsibility level modulates FRN and P300 in anticipation of pain experienced by both self and others, reflecting the attentional and affective experiences in both pain- and empathy-related processes.

Little research has investigated the use of electrophysiological biomarkers in childhood and adolescence to distinguish early onset psychosis and the clinical high risk state. The P300 evoked potential is a robust neurophysiological marker of schizophrenia that is dampened in patients with schizophrenia and, less consistently, in those with affective psychoses and those at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR). How it may differ between patients with psychotic disorders (PS) and CHR is less studied, especially in youth. The current study compared P300 activity among children and adolescents, aged 5–18 years, at CHR (n = 43), with PS (n = 28), and healthy controls (HC; n = 24). Participants engaged in an auditory event-related potential (ERP) task to elicit a P300 response and completed clinical interviews to verify symptoms and diagnoses. Linear regression analyses revealed a decrease in P300 amplitude with increased severity of psychotic symptoms. PS participants showed a diminished P300 response compared to those at CHR and HC, particularly among adolescents aged 13–18. This response was most evident at centroparietal and parietal locations in the right hemisphere. The findings suggest that high risk and psychotic symptomatology is linked to attenuated parietal P300 activity in youth as young as 13 years. Further exploration of the P300 as a biomarker for psychosis in very young patients could inform tailored, appropriate interventions at early stages of disease progression. Future research should evaluate whether specific phenotypic and genotypic characteristics are differentially associated with neurophysiological biomarkers and whether P300 attenuation in CHR youth can predict later symptom severity.

The present study investigated the effect of acute stress on attentional bias to threat using behavioral and ERP methods. Sixty-two male participants were randomly assigned to a stress condition (Trier Social Stress Test) or a control condition. To examine the impact of stress-induced cortisol on attentional bias to threat, participants in the stress group were split into Low- and High cortisol responders. All participants were then administered a modified dot probe task in which the cues were neutral and angry faces. Behavioral results showed a pattern of attentional bias toward threat in the Control group but not in the stress group. For the ERPs, the P100 peaked earlier for the angry-cued targets than the neutral-cued targets in the Control group, which suggests a rapid, adaptive response toward threat. However, this effect was not observed in the stress group, suggesting a suppressed attentional bias under stress. In addition, the stress group (including both Low and High cortisol responders) showed reduced P300 amplitude to target onset than the Control group. These results suggest that acute stress disrupts attentional bias to threat including a reduction in early bias to threat in addition to a subsequent change of attention allocation.

Background Recent research has shown that patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) exhibit reduced directed forgetting (DF) for negative words, suggesting impaired ability to instantiate goal-directed inhibition in order to suppress a competing, emotion-driven responses (i.e., emotional memory enhancement). However, disrupted inhibition is not the only possible mechanism by which patients could manifest reduced emotional DF. Therefore, the primary objective of the current study was to use event-related brain potential (ERP) recordings to investigate alternative hypotheses. Methods ERPs were recorded while patients and controls completed an item-method DF paradigm using negative and neutral words. The N2 indexed goal-directed inhibition of to-be-forgotten items. The late positive potential (LPP) indexed emotional memory enhancement for negative study items. The P300 indexed selective rehearsal of to-be-remembered items. Results The SCZ group exhibited a reduced DF effect overall, but this was not modulated by emotion. N2 amplitude at anterior sites was larger for forget versus remember cues in the control group only, but this effect was not modulated by emotion. LPP amplitude was greater for negative versus neutral words in both groups, independent of region. P300 amplitude at posterior sites was greater for remember versus forget cues in the control group only. Discussion These data suggest that reduced DF in SCZ may be due, in part, to both diminished goal-directed inhibition of to-be-forgotten items and reduced selective rehearsal of to-be-remembered items. However, these data do not support the hypothesis that goal-directed, inhibitory processes are disrupted by competing, emotion-driven processes in SCZ. Patients' ERP data also suggested that they did not exhibit disproportionately heightened encoding of emotional stimuli, nor did they have deficient selective rehearsal of to-be-remembered emotional items.

Feedback-related negativity (FRN) is an event-related brain potential (ERP) component elicited by errors and negative outcomes. Previous studies proposed that FRN reflects the activity of a general error-processing system that incorporates reward prediction error (RPE). However, other studies reported inconsistent results on this issue - namely, that FRN only reflects the valence of feedback and that the magnitude of RPE is reflected by the other ERP component called P300. The present study focused on the relationship between the FRN amplitude and RPE. ERPs were recorded during a reversal learning task performed by the participants, and a computational model was used to estimate trial-by-trial RPEs, which we correlated with the ERPs. The results indicated that FRN and P300 reflected the magnitude of RPE in negative outcomes and positive outcomes, respectively. In addition, the correlation between RPE and the P300 amplitude was stronger than the correlation between RPE and the FRN amplitude. These differences in the correlation between ERP and RPE components may explain the inconsistent results reported by previous studies; the asymmetry in the correlations might make it difficult to detect the effect of the RPE magnitude on the FRN and makes it appear that the FRN only reflects the valence of feedback.

Receiving a small reward where a larger reward could have been obtained can be considered a punishment, while a small loss in the context of avoiding a larger loss can be experienced as a reward. The aim of this study was to investigate the electrophysiological processes associated with absolute and relative reward and punishment signals. Twenty healthy right-handed volunteers performed a decision-making task and were instructed to judge which of two neutral objects was the most expensive. The received outcome was presented together with the non-received outcome for the alternative choice. The feedback-related potentials P200, FRN and P300 were recorded in response to absolute (i.e., received) outcome and relative (i.e., received in the context of the alternative) outcome. Absolute rewards yielded higher P200 amplitudes as compared to relative rewards, while the P200 amplitude was largest for relative as compared to absolute punishments. The P300 amplitude showed a main effect of valence with larger amplitudes for more positive relative and absolute outcomes. No effect of absolute or relative outcome was observed for the feedback-related negativity (FRN). Our findings suggest distinct processes associated with context-dependent and context-independent processing during feedback processing. 7 p.

This research aims to study the neural influence of conflict between brand and product performance on consumer decision. In the experiment, stimuli of products with brand and performance information were displayed randomly. 22 subjects need to decide whether to buy, while the event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded. The stimuli were divided into four conditions based on the consistency of brand and performance (condition 1: well-known brand and superior performance; condition 2: well-known brand and inferior performance; condition 3: unknown brand and superior performance; condition 4: unknown brand and inferior performance). Thus, this paper focuses on two conflicting stimuli - conditions (2) and (3). Results showed that conditions (2) had higher purchase rate than condition (3). Although both conditions (2) and (3) have conflicting information, condition (2) evoked the higher amplitude of conflict-related N270 than condition (3) in the prefrontal regions, which meant the actual performance is different from the expectation established by the brand and evoke the conflict between the stimulus and the endogenous information. An essential component of ERPs, P300, was elicited in among all parietal and occipital regions in all conditions, but the P300 amplitude triggered by condition (3) was significantly larger than condition (2). The findings consisted with the results of N270. The findings explain the neurological and psychological activities when consumers are browsing products. Hence, N270 and P300 may be useful neural endogenous indicators to reflect the process of handling conflicts and evaluation of products in consumer decision.

Functional neuroimaging research suggests that status-based evaluations may not solely depend on the level of social status but also on the conferred status dimension. However, no reports to date have studied how status level and dimension shape early person evaluations. To explore early status-based person evaluations, event-related brain potential data were collected from 29 participants while they indicated the status level and dimension of faces that had been previously trained to be associated with one of four status types: high moral, low moral, high financial, or low financial. Analysis of the P300 amplitude (previously implicated in social evaluation) revealed an interaction of status level and status dimension such that enhanced P300 amplitudes were observed in response to targets of high financial and low moral status relative to targets of low financial and high moral status. Implications of these findings are discussed in the context of our current understanding of status-based evaluation and, more broadly, of the processes by which person knowledge may shape person perception and evaluation.

There is broad evidence indicating that contextual information influence the processing of emotional stimuli. However, attachment theory suggests that attachment styles contribute to the ways in which people perceive emotional events. To shed light on whether the processing of body expressions during different emotional scenes is modulated by attachment styles, attachment-related electrophysiological differences were measured using event-related potentials. For avoidantly attached group, our results suggested that larger N170 amplitudes were educed by neutral bodies than angry bodies, which was found only in neutral scene. Moreover, significant differences were found in P300 amplitudes in response to angry bodies compared with neutral ones only during angry scene. However, securely and anxiously attached individuals were associated with larger P300 amplitudes in response to angry bodies versus neutral ones in both emotional scenes. The current study highlights the characteristics of cognitive processing of attachment styles on body expressions during different emotional scenes, with the variation of N170 and P300 amplitude in different emotional scenes as the best example.

Objective: To understand the underlying dynamic neurophysiological changes over the course of schizophrenia, it is important to study subjects longitudinally from the early stage of the illness. We previously reported that visual P300 was already impaired in patients with first-episode schizophrenia (FESZ). This study demonstrates how the visual P300, as well as earlier components P1, N1, and N200, changed at the 1-year follow-up after their initial measurement. Methods: Visual ERPs were recorded with the same experimental paradigm and acquisition protocol at both time points in FESZ (n = 18) and healthy comparison subjects (n = 24). Participants silently counted infrequent target stimuli (“x”) amid standard stimuli (“y”) presented on the screen while the 64-channel electroencephalogram was recorded. Results: FESZ showed smaller visual P300, N200, P1 (trend level) amplitude and delayed P300 and N1 latency at both time points; however, only P300 showed progressive amplitude reduction over the course of the illness at 1-year follow-up. P300 latency did not change over time in either group. FESZ showed significantly reduced Spatial Span total score at both time points, and there was a significant negative correlation between P300 peak amplitude and the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale positive symptom score at baseline. Conclusion: These data show progressive P300 amplitude reduction in response to visual stimuli in the early stage of schizophrenia. These visual P300 findings support the concept of progression of schizophrenia, suggesting the usefulness of the visual P300 as a biological marker of progression.

Introduction Brain fingerprinting is a forensic science technique that uses electroencephalography (EEG) to determine whether specific information is stored in a subject’s brain. It does this by measuring electrical brainwave responses to pictures that are presented on a computer screen; P300 wave is a specific event-related potential (ERP) component that has the potential for detecting concealed information in the brain. Objectives: this work aimed to evaluate the appearance of P 300 wave in response to relevant visual stimuli and its absence to irrelevant ones and to evaluate the latency and amplitude of P300 wave in response to well-known persons and places. Methods This is a cross sectional prospective study carried out on 225 normal individuals at Clinical Neurophysiology Unit, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University. It comprised both sexes aged from 18 to 70 years old; participants were divided into 3 groups. An endogenous ERP;P300 wave was seen evoked in response to rare, presented, recognized, meaningful stimulus, the peak amplitude was calculated and peak latency was measured from the time of stimulus onset. Results A photo of a person or place known to the test subject elicited a well-marked P300 response, while that of an unknown personality or place didn’t generate noticeable response. P300 wave latency and amplitude was recorded. There was a significant association between P300 amplitude and latency with age and educational level. Conclusion P300 wave is valuable in detecting concealed knowledge stored in the participant’s brain and is an objective and reliable test.

Background Earlier research has found cross-sectional attentional control deficits in manifest Huntington's disease (HD) using neuropsychological testing combined with simultaneous P300 registration. In the current pilot-study, we investigate attentional control in pre-manifest and manifest HD over a 3-year follow-up period. Method Five manifest HD (MHD), 9 pre-manifest HD (PMHD), and 12 control subjects were included. Sustained Attention to Response task (SART) and P300 registration resulted in number of errors, reaction time (RT), and P300 amplitude and latency. RT change patterns surrounding No-go trials were also investigated. Within-subject differences were tested using paired-samples t-tests and between-group results with ANCOVA on delta scores (follow-up – baseline scores). Results Manifest HD made more errors and were slower than controls and PMHD. Longitudinally, MHD showed an overall RT increase and a specific slowing on trials preceding a correct No-go trial (within-group effects). The latter was also seen in PMHD. P300 latency prolongation was found for controls on No-go and for MHD on Go trials. On specific trials surrounding both correct and incorrect No-go trials, MHD became significantly slower over time than controls and PMHD (between-group effects). Conclusions Over 3-years, MHD subjects became slower on the SART and showed a prolongation of P300 latency on specific SART trials. Specific slowing of performance over time was also seen in PMHD, suggestive of compensatory mechanisms in this group.

Using event-related potentials, this study investigated how financial herding or antiherding affected the valuation of subsequent outcomes. For each trial, subjects decided whether to buy the stock according to its net money flow information which could be used to reflect the strength of buying power or selling power of the stock. The return on investment (ROI) as feedback included the increase or decrease percentage after subjects’ responses. Results showed that, compared with herding, antiherding induced larger discrepancies of FRN and P300 amplitude between positive ROI and negative ROI, indicating that individuals under antiherding condition had stronger motivation and paid more attention in the evaluation process of ROI. Moreover, only for positive ROI, the amplitudes of FRN and P300 were modulated by two kinds of behaviors. We suggested that individuals making antiherd decisions were more confident with their own ability and choices, which reduced the positive outcome prediction error and gave more mental resources to evaluate positive outcome. However, negative outcomes evoked no different motivational meaning and negative emotion for individuals between herding and antiherding. The study may provide new insights into neurocognitive processes of herding and antiherding in financial market.

The present study used a P300-based Concealed Information Test (CIT) to detect individual and collaborative crimes and to explore whether or not the P300 index is effective in identifying collaborative crime members. Participants were divided into two groups to either steal a ring alone (individual group) or collaboratively with another companion participant (collaborative group) before taking the Complex Trial Protocol test that is regarded as an accurate version of the P300-based CIT. The ERP results revealed that both groups showed significantly larger P300s to probe (the ring) than to all irrelevant stimuli (other jewelery), but the P300 amplitude difference of probe stimulus versus irrelevant stimuli in the collaborative group was significantly less than that in the individual group. For the individual diagnosis, using P300 index, the detection rate was significantly inferior for collaborative crime than individual crime, probably related to weakness of collaborative encoding. The ROC curve comparisons showed the individual guilty was effectively discriminated from the simulated-innocent (AUC = .84) and from the collaborative guilty (AUC = .83), but the collaborative guilty was not discriminable from the simulated-innocent (AUC = .66). These findings suggest that collaborative encoding of crime-related information impacts the efficiency of the P300 index, and that the P300-based CIT is not applicable when used to identify collaborative crime perpetrators.

Although it is well known that attractiveness-based impressions affect the labor market, election outcomes and many other social activities, little is known about the role physical attractiveness plays in financial transactions. With the development of online finance, peer-to-peer lending has become one of the most important ways in which businesses or individuals raise capital. However, because of information asymmetry, the lender must decide whether or not to lend money to a stranger based on limited information, resulting in their decision being influenced by many other factors. In the current study, we investigated how potential borrowers' facial attractiveness influenced lenders' attitudes toward borrowers' repayment behavior at the brain level by using event-related potentials. At the priming stage, photos of attractive borrowers induced smaller N200 amplitude than photos of unattractive borrowers. Meanwhile, at the feedback stage, compared with the condition of repaying on time, breach of repayment from unattractive borrowers induced larger feedback-related negativity (FRN) amplitude, which was a frontal-central negative deflection and would be enhanced by the unexpected outcome. Furthermore, smaller P300 amplitude was also elicited by the condition of not repaying on time. These differences in the FRN and P300 amplitudes were not observed between negative and positive feedback from attractive borrowers. Therefore, our findings suggest that the beauty premium phenomenon is present in online peer-to-peer lending and that lenders were more tolerant toward attractive borrowers' dishonest behavior.

Background: Some individuals with modest elevations in dietary restraint exhibit the ability to diminish consummatory and anticipatory food reward. In this paper we aim to identify the underlying mechanisms of food-specific cortical inhibition responses in restrained vs unrestrained eaters. Methods: Restrained (n = 43) and unrestrained eaters (n = 38) completed self-report surveys and a food- vs non-food Stroop task protocol with record of electroencephalography (EEG). Cortical rhythms and EEG ERPs were assessed. Results: Compared to their unrestrained peers, restrained eaters showed several differences in food task-related event-related potential (ERP) waveform presentation: ERP P300 component latency was significantly longer during food image viewing over the left parietal cortex (P3), and the amplitudes of the ERP P300 and LPP components were significantly greater over the right central electrode (C4) whilst responding to Stroop color-word cues. Food task-related conflict cue elicited ERP P300 amplitude correlated positively with eating restraint, and negatively with bioelectrical impedance assessed % body fat. Conclusions: Restrained eaters free of eating pathology attenuate conscious visual food cue processing and show enhanced executive brain functioning during late attentional processing despite the presence of distractor food cues. Our data propose robust executive governance as the primary underlying neurophysiological mechanism by which healthy restrained eaters diminish consummatory food reward and inhibit prepotent feeding responses.

Although previous research in ERPs has focused on the conditions under which faces are recognized, less research has focused on the process by which face representations are acquired and maintained. In Experiment 1, participants were required to monitor for a target “Joe” face that was shown among a series of nontarget “Other” faces. At the halfway point, participants were instructed to switch targets from the Joe face to a previous nontarget face that is now labeled “Bob.” The ERP analysis focused on the posterior N250 component known to index face familiarity and the P300 component associated with context updating and response decision. Results showed that, in the first half of the experiment, there was increase in N250 negativity to the target Joe face compared with the nontarget Bob and designated Other face. In the second half of the experiment, an enhanced N250 negativity was produced to the now-target Bob face compared with the Other face. Critically, the enhanced N250 negativity to the Joe face was maintained, although Joe was no longer the target. The P300 component followed a similar pattern of brain response, where the Joe face elicited a significantly larger P300 amplitude than the Other face and the Bob face. In the Bob half of the experiment, the Bob face elicited a reliably larger P300 than the Other faces, and the heightened P300 to the Joe face was sustained. In Experiment 2, we examined whether the increased N250 and P300 to Joe was because of simple naming effects. Participants were introduced to both Joe and Bob faces and names at the beginning of the experiment. In the first half of the experiment, participants monitored for the target Joe face and at the halfway point, they were instructed to switch targets to the Bob face. Findings show that N250 negativity significantly increased to the Joe face relative to the Bob and Other faces in the first half of the experiment and an enhanced N250 negativity was found for the target Bob face and the nontarget Joe face in the second half. An increased P300 amplitude was demonstrated to the target Joe and Bob faces in the first and second halves of the experiment, respectively. Importantly, the P300 amplitude elicited by the Joe face equaled the P300 amplitude to the Bob face, although it was no longer the target face. The findings from Experiments 1 and 2 suggest that the N250 component is not solely determined by name labeling, exposure, or task relevancy, but it is the combination of these factors that contribute to the acquisition of enduring face representations.

The present study aimed at examining the brain mechanism of the effect of self-relevant possessive pronoun (SRPP). Eighteen participants observed the following stimuli: "wo de" (Chinese for "my"/"mine"), "ta de" (Chinese for "his"), "wo" (Chinese for "I"/"me"), "ta" (Chinese for "he"/"him"), small circle and big circle. Relative to "ta de", "wo" and "ta", "wo de" elicited a significantly larger P300 amplitude, i.e. the effect of SRPP. The results showed that the effect was not due to the difference between the characters that comprise "wo de" and the characters that comprise "ta de". Low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (LORETA) was also conducted, which showed activities in medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC), anterior cingulate and postcentral cortex. Two representations of SRPP, self-referential content (SRC) and first-person perspective (FPP), are discussed.

Little is known about the relationship between gamma-band oscillations prior to the arrival of a target stimulus and subsequent sensory processing and response execution. Although schizophrenia has been associated with abnormalities in gamma-band oscillations, P300, and reaction time (RT), few studies have examined the possible correspondence between these three neurobiological and behavioral markers in schizophrenia. To characterize the relationship between preparatory processes, information processing, and subsequent behavioral performance in schizophrenia, the present study investigated the relationships between pre-stimulus gamma-band power, RT and P300 amplitude.EEG and behavioral data were collected from 18 schizophrenia patients and 21 healthy controls during a conventional auditory oddball task.In controls, single-trial pre-stimulus gamma power was positively correlated with RT, and average P300 amplitude was positively correlated with average pre-stimulus gamma power.We interpret these findings as evidence that gamma power enhancement reflects a state of greater pre-stimulus preparation resulting in fuller evaluation of the target stimulus and therefore slower RT, as proposed by Jokeit and Makeig (1994). Consistent with previous research, schizophrenia patients exhibited RT slowing and P300 amplitude reductions relative to controls. Importantly, neither RT nor P300 amplitude was related to pre-stimulus gamma power in schizophrenia, suggesting a breakdown in the preparatory brain state critical for stimulus processing and later motor execution. The present findings underscore the behavioral significance of gamma-band responses, and provide an additional link between gamma-band oscillations and information processing abnormalities in schizophrenia.

Objective: This study examined the effect of motivation as a possible psychological influencing variable on P300 amplitude and performance in a brain–computer interface (BCI) controlled by event-related potentials (ERP). Methods: Participants were instructed to copy spell a sentence by attending to cells of a randomly flashing 7 � 7 matrix. Motivation was manipulated by monetary reward. In two experimental groups participants received 25 (N = 11) or 50 (N = 11) Euro cent for each correctly selected character; the control group (N = 11) was not rewarded. BCI performance was defined as the overall percentage of correctly selected characters (correct response rate = CRR). Results: Participants performed at an average of 99%. At electrode location Cz the P300 amplitude was positively correlated to self-rated motivation. The P300 amplitude of the most motivated participants was significantly higher than that of the least motivated participants. Highly motivated participants were able to communicate correctly faster with the ERP-BCI than less motivated participants. Conclusions: Motivation modulates the P300 amplitude in an ERP-BCI. Significance: Motivation may contribute to variance in BCI performance and should be monitored in BCI settings.
