Magnetoencephalography/electroencephalography (M/EEG) can provide insights into migraine pathophysiology and help develop clinically valuable biomarkers. To integrate and summarize the existing evidence on changes in brain function in migraine, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis (PROSPERO CRD42021272622) of resting-state M/EEG findings in migraine. We included 27 studies after searching MEDLINE, Web of Science Core Collection, and EMBASE. Risk of bias was assessed using a modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Semi-quantitative analysis was conducted by vote counting, and meta-analyses of M/EEG differences between people with migraine and healthy participants were performed using random-effects models. In people with migraine during the interictal phase, meta-analysis revealed higher power of brain activity at theta frequencies (3-8 Hz) than in healthy participants. Furthermore, we found evidence for lower alpha and beta connectivity in people with migraine in the interictal phase. No associations between M/EEG features and disease severity were observed. Moreover, some evidence for higher delta and beta power in the premonitory compared to the interictal phase was found. Strongest risk of bias of included studies arose from a lack of controlling for comorbidities and non-automatized or non-blinded M/EEG assessments. These findings can guide future M/EEG studies on migraine pathophysiology and brain-based biomarkers, which should consider comorbidities and aim for standardized, collaborative approaches., (© 2024. Generalized epilepsy (GE) encompasses a heterogeneous group of hyperexcitability disorders that clinically manifest as seizures. At the whole-brain level, distinct seizure patterns as well as interictal epileptic discharges (IEDs) reflect key signatures of hyperexcitability in magneto- and electroencephalographic (M/EEG) recordings. Moreover, it had been suggested that aperiodic activity, specifically the slope of the 1/ ƒ x decay function of the power spectrum, might index neural excitability. However, it remained unclear if hyperexcitability as encountered at the cellular level directly translates to putative large-scale excitability signatures, amenable to M/EEG. In order to test whether the power spectrum is altered in hyperexcitable states, we recorded resting-state MEG from male and female GE patients ( n  = 51; 29 females; 28.82 ± 12.18 years; mean ± SD) and age-matched healthy controls ( n  = 49; 22 females; 32.10 ± 12.09 years). We parametrized the power spectra using FOOOF ("fitting oscillations and one over f ") to separate oscillatory from aperiodic activity to directly test whether aperiodic activity is systematically altered in GE patients. We further identified IEDs to quantify the temporal dynamics of aperiodic activity around overt epileptic activity. The results demonstrate that aperiodic activity indexes hyperexcitability in GE at the whole-brain level, especially during epochs when no IEDs were present ( p  = 0.0130; d  = 0.52). Upon IEDs, large-scale circuits transiently shifted to a less excitable network state ( p  = 0.001; d  = 0.68). The characterisation of resting-state networks (RSNs) using neuroimaging techniques has significantly contributed to our understanding of the organisation of brain activity. Prior work has demonstrated the electrophysiological basis of RSNs and their dynamic nature, revealing transient activations of brain networks with millisecond timescales. While previous research has confirmed the comparability of RSNs identified by electroencephalography (EEG) to those identified by magnetoencephalography (MEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), most studies have utilised static analysis techniques, ignoring the dynamic nature of brain activity. Often, these studies use high-density EEG systems, which limit their applicability in clinical settings. Addressing these gaps, our research studies RSNs using medium-density EEG systems (61 sensors), comparing both static and dynamic brain network features to those obtained from a high-density MEG system (306 sensors). We assess the qualitative and quantitative comparability of EEG-derived RSNs to those from MEG, including their ability to capture age-related effects, and explore the reproducibility of dynamic RSNs within and across the modalities. Our findings suggest that both MEG and EEG offer comparable static and dynamic network descriptions, albeit with MEG offering some increased sensitivity and reproducibility. Functional connectivity in electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) data is commonly assessed by using measures that are insensitive to instantaneously interacting sources and as such would not give rise to false positive interactions caused by instantaneous mixing of true source signals (first-order mixing). Recent studies, however, have drawn attention to the fact that such measures are still susceptible to instantaneous mixing from lagged sources (i.e. second-order mixing) and that this can lead to a large number of false positive interactions. In this study we relate first- and second-order mixing effects on the cross-spectra of reconstructed source activity to the properties of the resolution operators that are used for the reconstruction. We derive two identities that relate first- and second-order mixing effects to the transformation properties of measurement and source configurations and exploit them to establish several basic properties of signal mixing. First, we provide a characterization of the configurations that are maximally and minimally sensitive to second-order mixing. It turns out that second-order mixing effects are maximal when the measurement locations are far apart and the sources coincide with the measurement locations. Second, we provide a description of second-order mixing effects in the vicinity of the measurement locations in terms of the local geometry of the point-spread functions of the resolution operator. Third, we derive a version of Lagrange's identity for cross-talk functions that establishes the existence of a trade-off between the magnitude of first- and second-order mixing effects. It also shows that, whereas the magnitude of first-order mixing is determined by the inner product of cross-talk functions, the magnitude of second-order mixing is determined by a generalized cross-product of cross-talk functions (the wedge product) which leads to an intuitive geometric understanding of the trade-off. Due to extensive connectivity of the parietal lobe, non-lesional drug-resistant (DRE) parietal lobe epilepsies (PLEs) are difficult to localize and often imitate other epilepsies. Therefore, patients with PLEs have low rates of seizure freedom following epilepsy surgery. Previous studies have highlighted the need to combine EEG and semiology for more accurate localization of PLEs. As sophisticated tools for localization become more available, the use of multiple different neuroimaging and neurophysiologic diagnostic tests may more readily identify PLE. We hereby report a unique case of a complex localization in a non-lesional PLE, which was initially falsely localized to frontal lobe. This case underscores the utility of voxel-based morphometry (VBM) in identifying an epileptogenic lesion on a non-lesional MRI and the significance of multimodality approach including PET, magnetoencephalopathy (MEG), interictal and ictal EEG, semiology and cortical stimulation for accurate localization of PLEs. Understanding epilepsy through multimodality approach in this fashion can help with accurate localization especially in difficulty to localize and deceptive non-lesional PLEs. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: Parietal lobe epilepsies are hard to pinpoint in the brain and can mimic other types of epilepsy, especially when brain MRIs appear normal. As sophisticated tools for locating epilepsies in the brain become more available, using multiple diagnostic tests may help identify parietal lobe epilepsies more easily. We describe a unique case of a parietal lobe epilepsy patient with normal brain MRI whose epilepsy was initially misidentified as being in the frontal lobe. Background: An imbalance of excitatory and inhibitory synaptic transmission in multiple sclerosis (MS) may lead to cognitive impairment, such as impaired working memory. The 1/f slope of electroencephalography/magnetoencephalography (EEG/MEG) power spectra is shown to be a non-invasive proxy of excitation/inhibition balance. A flatter slope is associated with higher excitation/lower inhibition., Objectives: To assess the 1/f slope modulation induced by stimulus and its association with behavioral and cognitive measures., Methods: We analyzed MEG recordings of 38 healthy controls (HCs) and 79 people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) while performing an n-back task including target and distractor stimuli. Target trials require an answer, while distractor trials do not. We computed the 1/f spectral slope through the fitting oscillations and one over f (FOOOF) algorithm within the time windows 1 second before and after each stimulus presentation., Results: We observed a flatter 1/f slope after distractor stimuli in pwMS compared to HCs. The 1/f slope was significantly steeper after stimulus for both HCs and pwMS and was significantly correlated with reaction times. Microstates are transient scalp configurations of brain activity measured by electroencephalography (EEG). The application of microstate analysis in magnetoencephalography (MEG) data remains challenging. In one MEG dataset (N = 113), we aimed to identify MEG microstates at rest, explore their brain sources, and relate them to changes in brain activity during open-eyes (ROE) or closed-eyes resting state (RCE) and an auditory Mismatch Negativity (MMN) task. In another dataset of simultaneously recorded EEG-MEG data (N = 21), we investigated the association between MEG and EEG microstates. Six MEG microstates (mMS) provided the best clustering of resting-state activity, each linked to different brain sources: mMS 1-2: left/right occipito-parietal; mMS 3: fronto-temporal; mMS 4: centro-medial; mMS 5-6: left/right fronto-parietal. Increases in occipital alpha power in RCE relative to ROE correlated with greater mMS 1-2 time coverage (τ b s < 0.20, ps > .002), while the lateralization of deviance detection in MMN was associated with mMS 5-6 time coverage (τ b s < 0.16, ps > .012). No temporal correlation was found between EEG and MEG microstates (ps > .05), despite some overlap in brain sources and global explained variance between mMS 2-3 and EEG microstates B-C (rs > 0.60, ps < .002). Hence, the MEG signal can be decomposed into microstates, but mMS brain activity clustering captures phenomena different from EEG microstates. Source reconstruction and task-related modulations link mMS to large-scale networks and localized activities. Background and Objective: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurological disorder that impairs brain functions associated with cognition, memory, and behavior. Noninvasive neurophysiological techniques like magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG) have shown promise in reflecting brain changes related to AD. These techniques are usually assessed at two levels: local activation (spectral, nonlinear, and dynamic properties) and global synchronization (functional connectivity, frequency-dependent network, and multiplex network organization characteristics). Nonetheless, the understanding of the organization formed by the existing relationships between these levels, henceforth named neurophysiological organization, remains unexplored. This work aims to assess the alterations AD causes in the resting-state neurophysiological organization., Methods: To that end, three datasets from healthy controls (HC) and patients with dementia due to AD were considered: MEG database (55 HC and 87 patients with AD), EEG1 database (51 HC and 100 patients with AD), and EEG2 database (45 HC and 82 patients with AD). To explore the alterations induced by AD in the relationships between several features extracted from M/EEG data, association networks (ANs) were computed. ANs are graphs, useful to quantify and visualize the intricate relationships between multiple features., Results: Our results suggested a disruption in the neurophysiological organization of patients with AD, exhibiting a greater inclination towards the local activation level; and a significant decrease in the complexity and diversity of the ANs (p-value ¡ 0.05, Mann-Whitney U-test, Bonferroni correction). This effect might be due to a shift of the neurophysiological organization towards more regular configurations, which may increase its vulnerability. Moreover, our findings support the crucial role played by the local activation level in maintaining the stability of the neurophysiological organization. Classification performance exhibited accuracy values of 83.91%, 73.68%, and 72.65% for MEG, EEG1, and EEG2 databases, respectively., Conclusion: This study introduces a novel, valuable methodology able to integrate parameters characterize different properties of the brain activity and to explore the intricate organization of the neurophysiological organization at different levels. Background: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a non-invasive imaging technique for directly measuring the external magnetic field generated from synchronously activated pyramidal neurons in the brain. The optically pumped magnetometer (OPM) is known for its less expensive, non-cryogenic, movable and user-friendly custom-design provides the potential for a change in functional neuroimaging based on MEG., Methods: An array of OPMs covering the opposite sides of a subject's head is placed inside a magnetically shielded room (MSR) and responses evoked from the auditory cortices are measured., Results: High signal-to-noise ratio auditory evoked response fields (AEFs) were detected by a wearable OPM-MEG system in a MSR, for which a flexible helmet was specially designed to minimize the sensor-to-head distance, along with a set of bi-planar coils developed for background field and gradient nulling. Neuronal current sources activated in AEF experiments were localized and the auditory cortices showed the highest activities. Performance of the hybrid optically pumped magnetometer-magnetoencephalography/electroencephalography (OPM-MEG/EEG) system was also assessed., Conclusions: The multi-channel OPM-MEG system performs well in a custom built MSR equipped with bi-planar coils and detects human AEFs with a flexible helmet. The application of wearable magnetoencephalography using optically-pumped magnetometers has drawn extensive attention in the field of neuroscience. Electroencephalogram system can cover the whole head and reflect the overall activity of a large number of neurons. The efficacy of optically-pumped magnetometer in detecting event-related components can be validated through electroencephalogram results. Multivariate pattern analysis is capable of tracking the evolution of neurocognitive processes over time. In this paper, we adopted a classical Chinese semantic congruity paradigm and separately collected electroencephalogram and optically-pumped magnetometer signals. Then, we verified the consistency of optically-pumped magnetometer and electroencephalogram in detecting N400 using mutual information index. Multivariate pattern analysis revealed the difference in decoding performance of these two modalities, which can be further validated by dynamic/stable coding analysis on the temporal generalization matrix. The results from searchlight analysis provided a neural basis for this dissimilarity at the magnetoencephalography source level and the electroencephalogram sensor level. Neuroaesthetic research has focused on neural predictive processes involved in the encounter with art stimuli or the related evaluative judgements, and it has been mainly conducted unimodally. Here, with electroencephalography, magnetoencephalography and an affective priming protocol, we investigated whether and how the neural responses to non-representational aesthetic stimuli are top-down modulated by affective representational (i.e. semantically meaningful) predictions between audition and vision. Also, the neural chronometry of affect processing of these aesthetic stimuli was investigated. We hypothesized that the early affective components of crossmodal aesthetic responses are dependent on the affective and representational predictions formed in another sensory modality resulting in differentiated brain responses, and that audition and vision indicate different processing latencies for affect. The target stimuli were aesthetic visual patterns and musical chords, and they were preceded by a prime from the opposing sensory modality. We found that early auditory-cortex responses to chords were more affected by valence than the corresponding visual-cortex ones. Furthermore, the assessments of visual targets were more facilitated by affective congruency of crossmodal primes than the acoustic targets. These results indicate, first, that the brain uses early affective information for predictively guiding aesthetic responses; second, that an affective transfer of information takes place crossmodally, mainly from audition to vision, impacting the aesthetic assessment. Purpose: Study assessed the role of MSI in predicting the post-operative seizure outcome., Methods: This retrospective study included patients who underwent MEG and epilepsy surgery and had a minimum 6 months of postoperative follow-up. Concordance of MEG cluster with post-surgical resection cavity was classified as follows Class I) Concordant and region-specific, Class II) Concordant and region non-specific, Class III) Concordant lateralization only and Class IV) Discordant lateralization. The relationship between MSI concordance and post-operative seizure outcome was assessed., Results: A total of 183 patients (M: F = 109:74) were included. The mean age at onset of seizures: 8.0 ± 6.4 years. The dipoles were frequent in 123(67.2 %). The primary cluster orientation was regular in 59 (32.2 %) and mixed in 124 (67.8 %) patients. Concordance between MEG and resection cavity: Class I - 124 (67.8 %), class II- 30 (16.4 %), class III- 23 (12.6 %), and class IV- 6 (3.3 %). The post-surgically mean duration of follow-up was 19.52 ± 11.27 months. At 6-month follow-up period, 144 (78.7 %) patients had complete seizure freedom out of which 106 (73.6 %) had class I concordance. Concordance of MEG with resection cavity was associated with a good outcome at 6 months (p = 0.001), 1 year (p = 0.001), 2 years (p = 0.0005) and 5 years (p = 0.04). The correlation dimension (CD) is a nonlinear measure of the complexity of invariant sets. First introduced for describing low-dimensional chaotic attractors, it has been later extended to the analysis of experimental electroencephalographic (EEG), magnetoencephalographic (MEG), and local field potential (LFP) recordings. However, its direct application to high-dimensional (dozens of signals) and high-definition (kHz sampling rate) 2HD data revealed a controversy in the results. We show that the need for an exponentially long data sample is the main difficulty in dealing with 2HD data. Then, we provide a novel method for estimating CD that enables orders of magnitude reduction of the required sample size. The approach decomposes raw data into statistically independent components and estimates the CD for each of them separately. In addition, the method allows ongoing insights into the interplay between the complexity of the contributing components, which can be related to different anatomical pathways and brain regions. The latter opens new approaches to a deeper interpretation of experimental data. The majority of electroencephalographic (EEG) and magnetoencephalographic (MEG) studies filter and analyse neural signals in specific frequency ranges, known as "canonical" frequency bands. However, this segmentation, is not exempt from limitations, mainly due to the lack of adaptation to the neural idiosyncrasies of each individual. In this study, we introduce a new data-driven method to automatically identify frequency ranges based on the topological similarity of the frequency-dependent functional neural network. The resting-state neural activity of 195 cognitively healthy subjects from three different databases (MEG: 123 subjects; EEG 1 : 27 subjects; EEG 2 : 45 subjects) was analysed. In a first step, MEG and EEG signals were filtered with a narrow-band filter bank (1 Hz bandwidth) from 1 to 70 Hz with a 0.5 Hz step. Next, the connectivity in each of these filtered signals was estimated using the orthogonalized version of the amplitude envelope correlation to obtain the frequency-dependent functional neural network. Finally, a community detection algorithm was used to identify communities in the frequency domain showing a similar network topology. We have called this approach the "Connectivity-based Meta-Bands" (CMB) algorithm. Additionally, two types of synthetic signals were used to configure the hyper-parameters of the CMB algorithm. We observed that the classical approaches to band segmentation are partially aligned with the underlying network topologies at group level for the MEG signals, but they are missing individual idiosyncrasies that may be biasing previous studies, as revealed by our methodology. On the other hand, the sensitivity of EEG signals to reflect this underlying frequency-dependent network structure is limited, revealing a simpler frequency parcellation, not aligned with that defined by the "canonical" frequency bands. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that proposes an unsupervised band segmentation method based on the topological similarity of functional neural network across frequencies. Electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography recordings are non-invasive and temporally precise, making them invaluable tools in the investigation of neural responses in humans. However, these recordings are noisy, both because the neuronal electrodynamics involved produces a muffled signal and because the neuronal processes of interest compete with numerous other processes, from blinking to day-dreaming. One fruitful response to this noisiness has been to use stimuli with a specific frequency and to look for the signal of interest in the response at that frequency. Typically this signal involves measuring the coherence of response phase: here, a Bayesian approach to measuring phase coherence is described. This Bayesian approach is illustrated using two examples from neurolinguistics and its properties are explored using simulated data. We suggest that the Bayesian approach is more descriptive than traditional statistical approaches because it provides an explicit, interpretable generative model of how the data arises. Neuronal oscillations and their synchronization between brain areas are fundamental for healthy brain function. Yet, synchronization levels exhibit large inter-individual variability that is associated with behavioral variability. We test whether individual synchronization levels are predicted by individual brain states along an extended regime of critical-like dynamics - the Griffiths phase (GP). We use computational modelling to assess how synchronization is dependent on brain criticality indexed by long-range temporal correlations (LRTCs). We analyze LRTCs and synchronization of oscillations from resting-state magnetoencephalography and stereo-electroencephalography data. Synchronization and LRTCs are both positively linearly and quadratically correlated among healthy subjects, while in epileptogenic areas they are negatively linearly correlated. These results show that variability in synchronization levels is explained by the individual position along the GP with healthy brain areas operating in its subcritical and epileptogenic areas in its supercritical side. Sudden, unexpected stimuli can induce a transient inhibition of sympathetic vasoconstriction to skeletal muscle, indicating a link to defense reactions. This phenomenon is relatively stable within, but differs between, individuals. It correlates with blood pressure reactivity which is associated with cardiovascular risk. Inhibition of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) is currently characterized through invasive microneurography in peripheral nerves. We recently reported that brain neural oscillatory power in the beta spectrum (beta rebound) recorded with magnetoencephalography (MEG) correlated closely with stimulus-induced MSNA inhibition. Aiming for a clinically more available surrogate variable reflecting MSNA inhibition, we investigated whether a similar approach with electroencephalography (EEG) can accurately gauge stimulus-induced beta rebound. We found that beta rebound shows similar tendencies to correlate with MSNA inhibition, but these EEG data lack the robustness of previous MEG results, although a correlation in the low beta band (13-20 Hz) to MSNA inhibition was found (p = 0.021). The predictive power is summarized in a receiver-operating-characteristics curve. The optimum threshold yielded sensitivity and false-positive rate of 0.74 and 0.33 respectively. A plausible confounder is myogenic noise. Growing evidence suggests that travelling waves are functionally relevant for cognitive operations in the brain. Several electroencephalography (EEG) studies report on a perceptual alpha-echo, representing the brain response to a random visual flicker, propagating as a travelling wave across the cortical surface. In this study, we ask if the propagating activity of the alpha-echo is best explained by a set of discrete sources mixing at the sensor level rather than a cortical travelling wave. To this end, we presented participants with gratings modulated by random noise and simultaneously acquired the ongoing MEG. The perceptual alpha-echo was estimated using the temporal response function linking the visual input to the brain response. At the group level, we observed a spatial decay of the amplitude of the alpha-echo with respect to the sensor where the alpha-echo was the largest. Importantly, the propagation latencies consistently increased with the distance. Interestingly, the propagation of the alpha-echoes was predominantly centro-lateral, while EEG studies reported mainly posterior-frontal propagation. Moreover, the propagation speed of the alpha-echoes derived from the MEG data was around 10 m/s, which is higher compared to the 2 m/s reported in EEG studies. Using source modelling, we found an early component in the primary visual cortex and a phase-lagged late component in the parietal cortex, which may underlie the travelling alpha-echoes at the sensor level. We then simulated the alpha-echoes using realistic EEG and MEG forward models by placing two sources in the parietal and occipital cortices in accordance with our empirical findings. The two-source model could account for both the direction and speed of the observed alpha-echoes in the EEG and MEG data. Our results demonstrate that the propagation of the perceptual echoes observed in EEG and MEG data can be explained by two sources mixing at the scalp level equally well as by a cortical travelling wave. Age-related structural and functional changes that occur during brain development are critical for cortical development and functioning. Previous electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) studies have highlighted the utility of power spectra analyses and have uncovered age-related trends that reflect perceptual, cognitive, and behavioural states as well as their underlying neurophysiology. The aim of the current study was to investigate age-related change in aperiodic and periodic alpha activity across a large sample of pre- and school-aged children (N = 502, age range 4 -11-years-of-age). Power spectra were extracted from baseline EEG recordings (eyes closed, eyes open) for each participant and parameterized into aperiodic activity to derive the offset and exponent parameters and periodic alpha oscillatory activity to derive the alpha peak frequency and the associated power estimates. Multilevel models were run to investigate age-related trends and condition-dependent changes for each of these measures. We found quadratic age-related effects for both the aperiodic offset and exponent. In addition, we observed increases in periodic alpha peak frequency as a function of age. Aperiodic measures and periodic alpha power were larger in magnitude during eyes closed compared to the eyes open baseline condition. Frequency tagging has been successfully used to investigate selective stimulus processing in electroencephalography (EEG) or magnetoencephalography (MEG) studies. Recently, new projectors have been developed that allow for frequency tagging at higher frequencies (>60 Hz). This technique, rapid invisible frequency tagging (RIFT), provides two crucial advantages over low-frequency tagging as (i) it leaves low-frequency oscillations unperturbed, and thus open for investigation, and ii) it can render the tagging invisible, resulting in more naturalistic paradigms and a lack of participant awareness. Fatigue is a highly prevalent and disabling symptom of many disorders and syndromes, resulting from different pathomechanisms. However, whether and how different mechanisms converge and result in similar symptomatology is only partially understood, and transdiagnostic biomarkers that could further the diagnosis and treatment of fatigue are lacking. We, therefore, performed a transdiagnostic systematic review (PROSPERO: CRD42022330113) of quantitative resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) studies in adult patients suffering from pathological fatigue in different disorders. Studies investigating fatigue in healthy participants were excluded. The risk of bias was assessed using a modified Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. Semi-quantitative data synthesis was conducted using modified albatross plots. After searching MEDLINE, Web of Science Core Collection, and EMBASE, 26 studies were included. Cross-sectional studies revealed increased brain activity at theta frequencies and decreased activity at alpha frequencies as potential diagnostic biomarkers. However, the risk of bias was high in many studies and domains. Together, this transdiagnostic systematic review synthesizes evidence on how resting-state M/EEG might serve as a diagnostic biomarker of pathological fatigue. Objective: Nociceptive stimuli have been studied either by dipolar modelling using electroencephalography (EEG) or magnetoencephalography (MEG), but rarely using both techniques simultaneously. This study aims to investigate the spatiotemporal representation of cortical activity in response to non-nociceptive (tactile) and nociceptive (laser) stimuli using parallel EEG-MEG recordings., Methods: We performed simultaneous EEG and MEG recordings in 12 healthy subjects by applying pneumatic tactile and nociceptive laser stimuli on the right- and left-hand dorsum. Background: Assessing brain activity during rest has become a widely used approach in developmental neuroscience. Extant literature has measured resting brain activity both during eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions, but the difference between these conditions has not yet been well characterized. Studies, limited to fMRI and EEG, have suggested that eyes-open versus -closed conditions may differentially impact neural activity, especially in visual cortices., Methods: Spontaneous cortical activity was recorded using MEG from 108 typically developing youth (9-15 years-old; 55 female) during separate sessions of eyes-open and eyes-closed rest. MEG source images were computed, and the strength of spontaneous neural activity was estimated in the canonical delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma bands, respectively. Power spectral density maps for eyes-open were subtracted from eyes-closed rest, and then submitted to vertex-wise regression models to identify spatially specific differences between conditions and as a function of age and sex., Results: Relative alpha power was weaker in the eyes-open compared to -closed condition, but otherwise eyes-open was stronger in all frequency bands, with differences concentrated in the occipital cortex. Relative theta power became stronger in the eyes-open compared to the eyes-closed condition with increasing age in frontal cortex. No differences were observed between males and females., Conclusions: The differences in relative power from eyes-closed to -open conditions are consistent with changes observed in task-based visual sensory responses. Age differences occurred in relatively late developing frontal regions, consistent with canonical attention regions, suggesting that these differences could be reflective of developmental changes in attention processes during puberty. +microstate is a MATLAB toolbox for brain functional microstate analysis. It builds upon previous EEG microstate literature and toolboxes by including algorithms for source-space microstate analysis. +microstate includes codes for performing individual- and group-level brain microstate analysis in resting-state and task-based data including event-related potentials/fields. Functions are included to visualise and perform statistical analysis of microstate sequences, including novel advanced statistical approaches such as statistical testing for associated functional connectivity patterns, cluster-permutation topographic ANOVAs, and χ 2 analysis of microstate probabilities in response to stimuli. Additionally, codes for simulating microstate sequences and their associated M/EEG data are included in the toolbox, which can be used to generate artificial data with ground truth microstates and to validate the methodology. +microstate integrates with widely used toolboxes for M/EEG processing including Fieldtrip, SPM, LORETA/sLORETA, EEGLAB, and Brainstorm to aid with accessibility, and includes wrappers for pre-existing toolboxes for brain-state estimation such as Hidden Markov modelling (HMM-MAR) and independent component analysis (FastICA) to aid with direct comparison with these techniques. Psychiatric disorders encompass complex aberrations of cognition and affect and are among the most debilitating and poorly understood of any medical condition. Current treatments rely primarily on interventions that target brain function (drugs) or learning processes (psychotherapy). A mechanistic understanding of how these interventions mediate their therapeutic effects remains elusive. From the early 1990s, non-invasive functional neuroimaging, coupled with parallel developments in the cognitive neurosciences, seemed to signal a new era of neurobiologically grounded diagnosis and treatment in psychiatry. Yet, despite three decades of intense neuroimaging research, we still lack a neurobiological account for any psychiatric condition. Likewise, functional neuroimaging plays no role in clinical decision making. Analyzing non-invasive recordings of electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) directly in sensor space, using the signal from individual sensors, is a convenient and standard way of working with this type of data. However, volume conduction introduces considerable challenges for sensor space analysis. While the general idea of signal mixing due to volume conduction in EEG/MEG is recognized, the implications have not yet been clearly exemplified. Here, we illustrate how different types of activity overlap on the level of individual sensors. We show spatial mixing in the context of alpha rhythms, which are known to have generators in different areas of the brain. Using simulations with a realistic 3D head model and lead field and data analysis of a large resting-state EEG dataset, we show that electrode signals can be differentially affected by spatial mixing by computing a sensor complexity measure. While prominent occipital alpha rhythms result in less heterogeneous spatial mixing on posterior electrodes, central electrodes show a diversity of rhythms present. This makes the individual contributions, such as the sensorimotor mu-rhythm and temporal alpha rhythms, hard to disentangle from the dominant occipital alpha. Additionally, we show how strong occipital rhythms can contribute the majority of activity to frontal channels, potentially compromising analyses that are solely conducted in sensor space. We also outline specific consequences of signal mixing for frequently used assessment of power, power ratios and connectivity profiles in basic research and for neurofeedback application. Objective . Epilepsy is a widely spread neurological disease, whose treatment often requires resection of the pathological cortical tissue. Interictal spike analysis observed in the non-invasively collected EEG or MEG data offers an attractive way to localize epileptogenic cortical structures for surgery planning purposes. Interictal spike detection in lengthy multichannel data is a daunting task that is still often performed manually. This frequently limits such an analysis to a small portion of the data which renders the appropriate risks of missing the potentially epileptogenic region. While a plethora of automatic spike detection techniques have been developed each with its own assumptions and limitations, none of them is ideal and the best results are achieved when the output of several automatic spike detectors are combined. This is especially true in the low signal-to-noise ratio conditions. To this end we propose a novel biomimetic approach for automatic spike detection based on a constrained mixed spline machinery that we dub as fast parametric curve matching (FPCM). Approach . Using the peak-wave shape parametrization, the constrained parametric morphological model is constructed and convolved with the observed multichannel data to efficiently determine mixed spline parameters corresponding to each time-point in the dataset. Then the logical predicates that directly map to verbalized text-book like descriptions of the expected interictal event morphology allow us to accomplish the spike detection task. Main results . The results of simulations mimicking typical low SNR scenarios show the robustness and high receiver operating characteristic AUC values of the FPCM method as compared to the spike detection performed using more conventional approaches such as wavelet decomposition, template matching or simple amplitude thresholding. Applied to the real MEG and EEG data from the human patients and to rat ECoG data, the FPCM technique demonstrates reliable detection of the interictal events and localization of epileptogenic zones concordant with independent conclusions made by the epileptologist. Purpose: Magnetoencephalography (MEG) defines the spike-generating zone and provides targets for invasive monitoring with stereotactic electroencephalography. This retrospective, blinded, cross-sectional study determined whether MEG virtual sensors could identify hippocampal epileptiform activity., Methods: Using MEG beamformer analysis, virtual sensors were manually placed in bilateral hippocampi and corresponding virtual sensor waveforms were analyzed for the presence of epileptiform activity. These findings were compared with hippocampal stereotactic electroencephalography in the same patients. Concordance was determined using sensitivity and specificity., Results: Thirty patients (mean age 12.5 ± 5.9 years) and 35 hippocampi were included. Patients were also placed into subgroups based on conventional MEG analysis: temporal (n = 19), extratemporal (n = 10), and normal (n = 1). Overall, sensitivity and specificity were 57.9% and 50.0%, respectively (n = 35). Patients with temporal sources based on conventional MEG analysis had sensitivity and specificity of 80.0% and 36.4%, respectively (n = 21). State modeling of whole-brain electroencephalography (EEG) or magnetoencephalography (MEG) allows to investigate transient, recurring neurodynamical events. Two widely-used techniques are the microstate analysis of EEG signals and hidden Markov modeling (HMM) of MEG power envelopes. Both reportedly lead to similar state lifetimes on the 100 ms timescale, suggesting a common neural basis. To investigate whether microstates and power envelope HMM states describe the same neural dynamics, we used simultaneous MEG/EEG recordings at rest and compared the spatial signature and temporal activation dynamics of microstates and power envelope HMM states obtained separately from EEG and MEG. Results showed that microstates and power envelope HMM states differ both spatially and temporally. Microstates reflect sharp events of neural synchronization, whereas power envelope HMM states disclose network-level activity with 100-200 ms lifetimes. Further, MEG microstates do not correspond to the canonical EEG microstates but are better interpreted as split HMM states. On the other hand, both MEG and EEG HMM states involve the (de)activation of similar functional networks. Microstate analysis and power envelope HMM thus appear sensitive to neural events occurring over different spatial and temporal scales. Background and Objective: The study of brain function has recently expanded from classical univariate to multivariate analyses. These multivariate, machine learning-based algorithms afford neuroscientists extracting more detailed and richer information from the data. However, the implementation of these procedures is usually challenging, especially for researchers with no coding experience. To address this problem, we have developed MVPAlab, a MATLAB-based, flexible decoding toolbox for multidimensional electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography data., Methods: The MVPAlab Toolbox implements several machine learning algorithms to compute multivariate pattern analyses, cross-classification, temporal generalization matrices and feature and frequency contribution analyses. It also provides access to an extensive set of preprocessing routines for, among others, data normalization, data smoothing, dimensionality reduction and supertrial generation. To draw statistical inferences at the group level, MVPAlab includes a non-parametric cluster-based permutation approach., Results: A sample electroencephalography dataset was compiled to test all the MVPAlab main functionalities. Significant clusters (p<0.01) were found for the proposed decoding analyses and different configurations, proving the software capability for discriminating between different experimental conditions., Conclusions: This toolbox has been designed to include an easy-to-use and intuitive graphic user interface and data representation software, which makes MVPAlab a very convenient tool for users with few or no previous coding experience. How does brain activity in distributed semantic brain networks evolve over time, and how do these regions interact to retrieve the meaning of words? We compared spatiotemporal brain dynamics between visual lexical and semantic decision tasks (LD and SD), analysing whole-cortex evoked responses and spectral functional connectivity (coherence) in source-estimated electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography (EEG and MEG) recordings. Our evoked analysis revealed generally larger activation for SD compared to LD, starting in primary visual area (PVA) and angular gyrus (AG), followed by left posterior temporal cortex (PTC) and left anterior temporal lobe (ATL). The earliest activation effects in ATL were significantly left-lateralised. Our functional connectivity results showed significant connectivity between left and right ATL, PTC and right ATL in an early time window, as well as between left ATL and IFG in a later time window. The connectivity of AG was comparatively sparse. We quantified the limited spatial resolution of our source estimates via a leakage index for careful interpretation of our results. Our findings suggest that the different demands on semantic information retrieval in lexical and semantic decision tasks first modulate visual and attentional processes, then multimodal semantic information retrieval in the ATLs and finally control regions (PTC and IFG) in order to extract task-relevant semantic features for response selection. Whilst our evoked analysis suggests a dominance of left ATL for semantic processing, our functional connectivity analysis also revealed significant involvement of right ATL in the more demanding semantic task. In this paper, we analyze spatial sampling of electro- (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG), where the electric or magnetic field is typically sampled on a curved surface such as the scalp. By simulating fields originating from a representative adult-male head, we study the spatial-frequency content in EEG as well as in on- and off-scalp MEG. This analysis suggests that on-scalp MEG, off-scalp MEG and EEG can benefit from up to 280, 90 and 110 spatial samples, respectively. In addition, we suggest a new approach to obtain sensor locations that are optimal with respect to prior assumptions. The approach also allows to control, e.g., the uniformity of the sensor locations. Based on our simulations, we argue that for a low number of spatial samples, model-informed non-uniform sampling can be beneficial. Like all humans, M/EEG researchers commit certain fallacies or mistakes in reasoning. This article surveys seven well-known but still common fallacies, including reverse inference, hasty generalization, hasty exclusion, inferring from group to individual, inferring from correlation to causation, affirming a disjunct, and false dichotomy. These fallacies are illustrated with classic EEG research by Libet and collaborators, but many researchers (not just Libet) continue to commit them in all areas of research (not just M/EEG). Repetitive propagating activities in resting-state brain activities have been widely observed in various species and regions. Because they resemble the preceding brain activities during tasks, they are assumed to reflect past experiences embedded in neuronal circuits. "Whole-brain" propagating activities may also reflect a process that integrates information distributed over the entire brain, such as visual and motor information. Here we reveal whole-brain propagating activities from human resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG) data. We simultaneously recorded the MEGs and EEGs and estimated the source currents from both measurements. Then using our recently proposed algorithm, we extracted repetitive spatiotemporal patterns from the source currents. The estimated patterns consisted of multiple frequency components, each of which transiently exhibited the frequency-specific resting-state networks (RSNs) of functional MRIs (fMRIs), such as the default mode and sensorimotor networks. A simulation test suggested that the spatiotemporal patterns reflected the phase alignment of the multiple frequency oscillators induced by the propagating activities along the anatomical connectivity. Fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS) allows the recording of objective brain responses of human face categorization (i.e., generalizable face-selective responses) with high signal-to-noise ratio. This approach has been successfully employed in a number of scalp electroencephalography (EEG) studies but has not been used with magnetoencephalography (MEG) yet, let alone with combined MEG/EEG recordings and distributed source estimation. Here, we presented various natural images of faces periodically (1.2 Hz) among natural images of objects (base frequency 6 Hz) whilst recording simultaneous EEG and MEG in 15 participants. Both measurement modalities showed face-selective responses at 1.2 Hz and harmonics across participants, with high and comparable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in about 3 min of stimulation. The correlation of face categorization responses between EEG and two MEG sensor types was lower than between the two MEG sensor types, indicating that the two sensor modalities provide independent information about the sources of face-selective responses. Face-selective EEG responses were right-lateralized as reported previously, and were numerically but non-significantly right-lateralized in MEG data. Distributed source estimation based on combined EEG/MEG signals confirmed a more bilateral face-selective response in visual brain regions located anteriorly to the common response to all stimuli at 6 Hz and harmonics. Conventional sensor and source space analyses of evoked responses in the time domain further corroborated this result. Background: The nonstationarity of EEG/MEG signals is important for understanding the functioning of the human brain. From our previous research we know that short, 250-500-ms MEG signals are variance-nonstationary. The covariance of a stochastic process is mathematically associated with its spectral density, therefore we investigate how the spectrum of such nonstationary signals varies in time., New Method: We analyse data from 148-channel MEG, which represent rest state, unattended listening, and frequency-modulated tones classification. We transform short-time MEG signals to the frequency domain and for the dominant frequencies of 8-12 Hz we prepare the time series representing their trial-to-trial variability. Then, we test them for level- and trend-stationarity, unit root, heteroscedasticity, and gaussianity, and propose ARMA-modelling for their description., Results: The analysed time series have weak-stationarity properties independently of the functional state of the brain and channel localization. Only a small percentage of them, mostly related to the cognitive task, reveal nonstationarity. The obtained mathematical models show that the spectral density of the analysed signals depends on only two to three previous trials., Comparison With Existing Methods: The presented method has limitations related to FFT resolution and univariate models, but it is computationally simple and allows obtaining a low-complex stochastic model of the EEG/MEG spectrum variability., Conclusions: Although physiological short-time MEG signals are in principle nonstationary in time, their power spectrum at the dominant (alpha) frequencies varies as a weakly stationary process. The main objective of this study was to examine the influence that recording length, sampling frequency, and imaging modality have on the estimation and characterization of spontaneous brain meta-states during rest. To this end, a recently developed method of meta-state extraction and characterization was applied to a subset of 16 healthy elderly subjects from two independent electroencephalographic and magnetoencephalographic (EEG/MEG) databases. The recordings were segmented into the first 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 60 and 90-s of artifact-free activity and meta-states were extracted. Temporal activation sequence (TAS) complexity, which characterizes the complexity of the metastateactivation sequences during rest, was calculated. Then, its stability as a function of segment length, sampling frequency, and imaging modality was assessed. The results showed that, in general, the minimum segment length needed to fully characterize resting-state meta-state activation complexity ranged from 15 to 25 seconds. Moreover, it was found that the sampling frequency has a slight influence on the complexity measure, and that results were similar across EEG and MEG. The findings indicate that the proposed methodology can be applied to both EEG and MEG recordings and displays stable behavior with relatively short segments. However, methodological choices, such as sampling frequency, should be carefully considered.

The mismatch response (MMR) is thought to be a neurophysiological measure of novel auditory detection that could serve as a translational biomarker of various neurological diseases. When recorded with electroencephalography (EEG) or magnetoencephalography (MEG), the MMR is traditionally extracted by subtracting the event-related potential/field (ERP/ERF) elicited in response to "deviant" sounds that occur randomly within a train of repetitive "standard" sounds. To overcome the limitations of this subtraction procedure, we propose a novel method which we call weighted-BSS T/k , which uses only the deviant response to derive the MMR. We hypothesized that this novel weighted-BSS T/k method highlights responses related to the detection of the deviant stimulus and is more sensitive than independent component analysis (ICA). To test this hypothesis and the validity and efficacy of the weighted-BSS T/k in comparison with ICA (infomax), we evaluated the methods in 12 healthy adults. Auditory stimuli were presented at a constant rate of 2 Hz. Frequency MMRs at a sensor level were obtained from the bilateral temporal lobes with the subtraction approach at 96-276 ms (the MMR time range), defined on the basis of spatio-temporal cluster permutation analysis. In the application of the weighted-BSS T/k , the deviant responses were given a constant weight on the MMR time range. The ERF elicited by the weighted deviant responses demonstrated one or a few dominant components representing the MMR with a high signal-to-noise ratio and similar topography to that of the sensor space analysis using the subtraction approach. In contrast, infomax or weighted-infomax revealed many minor or pseudo components as constituents of the MMR. Our new approach may assist in using the MMR in basic and clinical research.Clinical Relevance-Our proposed method opens a new and potentially useful way to analyze event-related MEG/EEG data.

Optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs) are quickly widening the scopes of noninvasive neurophysiological imaging. The possibility of placing these magnetic field sensors on the scalp allows not only to acquire signals from people in movement, but also to reduce the distance between the sensors and the brain, with a consequent gain in the signal-to-noise ratio. These advantages make the technique particularly attractive to characterise sources of brain activity in demanding populations, such as children and patients with epilepsy. However, the technology is currently in an early stage, presenting new design challenges around the optimal sensor arrangement and their complementarity with other techniques as electroencephalography (EEG). In this article, we present an optimal array design strategy focussed on minimising the brain source localisation error. The methodology is based on the Cramér-Rao bound, which provides lower error bounds on the estimation of source parameters regardless of the algorithm used. We utilise this framework to compare whole head OPM arrays with commercially available electro/magnetoencephalography (E/MEG) systems for localising brain signal generators. In addition, we study the complementarity between EEG and OPM-based MEG, and design optimal whole head systems based on OPMs only and a combination of OPMs and EEG electrodes for characterising deep and superficial sources alike. Finally, we show the usefulness of the approach to find the nearly optimal sensor positions minimising the estimation error bound in a given cortical region when a limited number of OPMs are available. This is of special interest for maximising the performance of small scale systems to ad hoc neurophysiological experiments, a common situation arising in most OPM labs., (© 2021 The Authors. Several noninvasive methods, such as high-density EEG or magnetoencephalography, are currently used to delineate the epileptogenic zone (EZ) during the presurgical evaluation of patients with drug resistant epilepsy (DRE). Yet, none of these methods can reliably identify the EZ by their own. In most cases a multimodal approach is needed. Challenging cases often require the implantation of intracranial electrodes, either through stereo-taxic EEG or electro-corticography. Recently, a growing body of literature introduces novel biomarkers of epilepsy that can be used for analyzing both invasive as well as noninvasive electrophysiological data. Some of these biomarkers are able to delineate the EZ with high precision, augment the presurgical evaluation, and predict the surgical outcome of patients with DRE undergoing surgery. However, the use of these epilepsy biomarkers in clinical practice is limited. Objective . To measure the impact of skull-to-brain conductivity ratios on interictal spikes source localizations, using high resolution EEG (HR EEG). In previous studies, two ratios were mainly employed: 1/80 and 1/40. Consequences of the employed ratios on source localization results are poorly studied. Methods . Twenty patients with drug-resistant epilepsy were studied using HR EEG (sixty-four scalp electrodes). For each patient, three-layers realistic head models based on individual MRI were elaborated using boundary element model. For each interictal spike, source localization was performed six times, using six skull-to-brain conductivity ratios (1/80, 1/50, 1/40, 1/30, 1/20 and 1/10), exploring all the spectrum of values reported in the literature. We then measured distances between the different sources obtained and between the sources and the anterior commissure (in order to estimate sources depth). Results . We measured a mean distance of 5.3 mm (sd: 3 mm) between the sources obtained with 1/40 versus 1/80 ratio. This distance increased when the discrepancy between the two evaluated ratios increased. We measured a mean distance of 14.2 mm (sd: 4.9 mm) between sources obtained with 1/10 ratio versus 1/80 ratio. Sources localized using 1/40 ratio were 4.3 mm closer to the anterior commissure than sources localized using 1/80 ratio. Significance . Skull-to-brain conductivity ratio is an often-neglected parameter in source localization studies. The different ratios mainly used in the litterature (1/80 and 1/40) lead to significant differences in source localizations. These variations mainly occur in source depth. A more accurate estimation of skull-to-brain conductivity is needed to increase source localization accuracy. Abbreviations . Objective: To determine whether magnetoencephalography (MEG) can identify epileptiform discharges mimicking small sharp spikes (SSSs) on scalp electroencephalography (EEG) in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE)., Methods: We retrospectively reviewed simultaneous scalp EEG and MEG recordings of 83 consecutive patients with TLE and 49 with extra-TLE (ETLE)., Results: SSSs in scalp EEG were detected in 15 (18.1%) of 83 TLE patients compared to only two (4.1%) of 49 ETLE patients (p = 0.029). Five of the 15 TLE patients had MEG spikes with concurrent SSSs in EEG, but neither of the 2 ETLE patients. Three of these 5 TLE patients had additional interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs) in EEG and MEG. Equivalent current dipoles (ECDs) of MEG spikes with concurrent SSSs and IEDs showed no difference in temporal lobe localization and horizontal orientation, whereas ECD moments were smaller in MEG spikes with concurrent SSSs than those with IEDs., Conclusions: SSSs were more common in TLE than in ETLE. Conscious perception of a near-threshold (NT) stimulus is characterized by the pre- and post-stimulus brain state. However, the power of pre-stimulus neural oscillations and strength of post-stimulus cortical activity that lead to conscious perception have rarely been examined in individual cortical areas. This is because most previous electro- and magnetoencephalography (EEG and MEG, respectively) studies involved scalp- and sensor-level analyses. Therefore, we recorded MEG during a continuous NT somatosensory stimulus detection task and applied the reconstructed source data in order to identify cortical areas where the post-stimulus cortical activity and pre-stimulus alpha oscillation predict the conscious perception of NT somatosensory stimuli. We found that the somatosensory hierarchical processing areas, prefrontal areas and cortical areas belonging to the default mode network showed stronger cortical activity for consciously perceived trials in the post-stimulus period, but the cortical activity in primary somatosensory area (SI) is independent of conscious perception during the early stage of NT stimulus processing. In addition, we revealed that the pre-stimulus alpha oscillation only in SI is predictive of conscious perception. These findings suggest that the bottom-up stream of somatosensory information flow following SI and pre-stimulus alpha activity fluctuation in SI as a top-down modulation are crucial constituents of conscious perception., (© 2021 The Authors. The brain is universally regarded as a system for processing information. If so, any behavioral or cognitive dysfunction should lend itself to depiction in terms of information processing deficiencies. Information is characterized by recursive, hierarchical complexity. The brain accommodates this complexity by a hierarchy of large/slow and small/fast spatiotemporal loops of activity. Thus, successful information processing hinges upon tightly regulating the spatiotemporal makeup of activity, to optimally match the underlying multiscale delay structure of such hierarchical networks. Reduced capacity for information processing will then be expressed as deviance from this requisite multiscale character of spatiotemporal activity. This deviance is captured by a general family of multiscale criticality measures (MsCr). MsCr measures reflect the behavior of conventional criticality measures (such as the branching parameter) across temporal scale. We applied MsCr to MEG and EEG data in several telling degraded information processing scenarios. Consistently with our previous modeling work, MsCr measures systematically varied with information processing capacity: MsCr fingerprints showed deviance in the four states of compromised information processing examined in this study, disorders of consciousness, mild cognitive impairment, schizophrenia and even during pre-ictal activity. Objective: A common problem in magnetoencephalographic (MEG) and electroencephalographic (EEG) experimental paradigms relying on the estimation of brain evoked responses is the lengthy time of the experiment, which stems from the need to acquire a large number of repeated recordings. Using a bootstrap approach, we aim at reliably reducing the number of these repeated trials., Methods: To this end, we assessed five variants of non-parametric bootstrapping based on the classical signal-plus-noise model constituting the foundation of signal averaging in MEG/EEG. We explain which of these approaches should and which should not be used for the aforementioned purpose, and why., Results: We present results for two advocated bootstrap variants applied to auditory MEG data. The ensuing trial-averaged magnetic fields served as input to the estimation of cortical source generators, with spatio-temporal matching pursuit as an example of an inverse solution technique. We propose, for a wide range of trial numbers, a general framework to evaluate the statistical properties of the parameter estimates for source locations and related time courses., Conclusion: The proposed bootstrap framework offers a systematic approach to reduce the number of trials required to estimate the evoked response. The general validity of our findings is neither bound to any particular type of MEG/EEG data nor to any specific source localization method., Significance: Practical implications of this work relate to the optimization of acquisition time of MEG/EEG experiments, thus reducing stress for the subjects (especially for patients) and minimizing related artifacts.

The task of identifying and characterizing network structures out of experimentally observed time series is tackled by implementing different solutions, ranging from entropy-based techniques to the evaluation of the significance of observed correlation estimators. Among the metrics that belong to the first class, mutual information is of major importance due to the relative simplicity of implementation and its relying on the crucial concept of entropy. With regard to the second class, a method that allows us to assess the connectivity strength of a link in terms of a time scale of its observability via the significance estimate of measured cross correlation was recently shown to provide a reliable tool to study network structures. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between this last metric and mutual information by simultaneously assessing both metrics on large sets of data extracted from three experimental contexts, human brain magnetoencephalography, human brain electroencephalography, and surface wind measurements carried out on a small regional scale, as well as on simulated coupled, auto-regressive processes. We show that the relationship is well described by a power law and provide a theoretical explanation based on a simple noise and signal model. Besides further upholding the reliability of cross-correlation time scale of observability, the results show that the combined use of this metric and mutual information can be used as a valuable tool to identify and characterize connectivity links in a wide range of experimental contexts.

Background: Independent Component Analysis (ICA) is a widespread tool for exploration and denoising of electroencephalography (EEG) or magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals. In its most common formulation, ICA assumes that the signal matrix is a noiseless linear mixture of independent sources that are assumed non-Gaussian. A limitation is that it enforces to estimate as many sources as sensors or to rely on a detrimental PCA step., Methods: We present the Spectral Matching ICA (SMICA) model. Signals are modelled as a linear mixing of independent sources corrupted by additive noise, where sources and the noise are stationary Gaussian time series. Thanks to the Gaussian assumption, the negative log-likelihood has a simple expression as a sum of 'divergences' between the empirical spectral covariance matrices of the signals and those predicted by the model. The model parameters can then be estimated by the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm., Results: On phantom MEG datasets with low amplitude dipole sources (20 nAm), SMICA makes a median dipole localization error of 1.5 mm while competing methods make an error ≥7 mm. Experiments on EEG datasets show that SMICA identifies a source subspace which contains sources that have less pairwise mutual information, and are better explained by the projection of a single dipole on the scalp. With 10 sources, the number of strongly dipolar sources (dipolarity >90%) is more than 80% for SMICA while competing methods do not exceed 65%., Comparison With Existing Methods: With the noisy model of SMICA, the number of sources to be recovered is controlled by choosing the size of the mixing matrix to be fitted rather than by a preprocessing step of dimension reduction which is required in traditional noise-free ICA methods., Conclusions: SMICA is a promising alternative to other noiseless ICA models based on non-Gaussian assumptions., (Copyright © 2021. Brain waveforms reconstructed at source level, like in beamforming, suffer polarity indeterminacy, which precludes direct group averaging of associated waveforms. We describe a polarity alignment method as an alternative of averaging rectified (i.e. absolute value) waveforms. Using MEG from an auditory localisation task, we compare the ability of the two approaches to enable signal detection in the primary auditory cortex over increasing sample size. The two methods are comparable in signal detection sensitivity, but the alignment method preserves group-average polarity alternation.

Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder exhibiting alterations in spontaneous and task-related cerebral activity whose relation (termed "state dependence") remains unclear. For unraveling their relationship, we review recent electroencephalographic (and a few functional magnetic resonance imaging) studies in schizophrenia that assess and compare both rest/prestimulus and task states, ie, rest/prestimulus-task modulation. Results report reduced neural differentiation of task-related activity from rest/prestimulus activity across different regions, neural measures, cognitive domains, and imaging modalities. Together, the findings show reduced rest/prestimulus-task modulation, which is mediated by abnormal temporospatial dynamics of the spontaneous activity. Abnormal temporospatial dynamics, in turn, may lead to abnormal prediction, ie, predictive coding, which mediates cognitive changes and psychopathological symptoms, including confusion of internally and externally oriented cognition. In conclusion, reduced rest/prestimulus-task modulation in schizophrenia provides novel insight into the neuronal mechanisms that connect task-related changes to cognitive abnormalities and psychopathological symptoms., (© The Author(s) 2020.
