Protecting DC microgrids (DCMGs) from faults is critical due to the rapid current changes that occur in milliseconds. However, ensuring fast and accurate protection in DCMGs is more challenging than in AC systems. This study proposes a novel protection algorithm using traveling waves (TWs) for fault detection and localization. The high‐order synchrosqueezing transform (FSSTH) is applied to precisely identify TWs at the relay location. FSSTH offers a sharp time–frequency representation, enhancing the accuracy and speed of fault detection. This method can accurately detect transient phenomena like TWs in DCMGs, even with noise and variable fault resistance. By using the spectral envelope with FSSTH, ridges in time–frequency representations are extracted, improving fault diagnosis. The approach differentiates external from internal faults and recognizes fault direction by assessing TW polarity. Testing on two different DCMGs showed this algorithm's high efficiency and accuracy, with fault location errors ranging from 1 to 50 meters in low‐voltage and 13 to 64 meters in medium‐voltage DCMGs, even under challenging conditions like high resistance (up to 500 Ω) and low signal‐to‐noise ratio (5 dB). Faulty synchronizations of synchronous generators can cause significant detrimental effects, primarily due to a large current and high electromagnetic torque. These effects not only impact the generator but they can also extend to the prime mover and the step-up transformer. Furthermore, such events can trigger disturbances in the power system, potentially leading to system collapse if not promptly cleared. Although the autosynchronizers and synchro-check technologies are well established in the industry, faulty synchronizations, such as those caused by incorrect wiring during maintenance or commissioning operations, can go undetected by these systems. Existing protections do not allow for the detection of faulty synchronizations in a timely manner. This paper presents novel protection methods specifically designed for this issue: one based on instantaneous current value and the other on the instantaneous current-derivative value. These schemes are activated exclusively during the synchronizations process, allowing for faster fault detection compared to existing methods, thereby reducing the duration of harmful electrical and mechanical stresses after a faulty synchronization. The effectiveness of the proposed schemes has been validated through computer simulations of a 362 MVA turbo-generator from a thermal power plant and also through experimental tests on a 5 kVA synchronous generator using a specialized laboratory synchronization test bench, yielding promising results. The use of multi-terminal high voltage direct current (HVDC) power transmission systems is being adopted in many new links between different generation and consumption areas due to their high efficiency. In these systems, cable energization must be performed at the rated voltage. Healthy energizations at the rated voltage result in large inrush currents, especially in long cables, primarily due to ground capacitance. State-of-the-art protection functions struggle to distinguish between transients caused by switching and those associated with ground faults, leading to potential unwanted tripping of the protection systems. To prevent this, tripping is usually blocked during the energization transient, which delays fault detection and clearing. This paper presents a novel method for prompt discrimination between healthy and faulty energizations. The proposed method outperforms conventional protection functions as this discrimination allows for earlier and more reliable tripping, thus avoiding extensive damage to the cable and the converter due to trip blocking. The method is based on the transient analysis of the current in the cable shields, therefore, another technical advantage is that high voltage-insulated measuring devices are not required. Two distinct tripping criteria are proposed: one attending to the change in current polarity, and the other to the change in current derivative sign. Fast progress of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology has been considerable over the past decades. Emerging Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) provides power systems with promising solutions to integrate large‐scale renewable energy sources, as well as multiple asynchronous power grids. Consequently, implementation of a multi‐terminal HVDC transmission system has been easier using MMC converters. However, protection of multi‐terminal MMC‐based HVDC grids under DC fault conditions is a challenge for the industry. This study sheds light on concept of system‐level DC protection coordination for multi‐terminal HVDC grids. Although, there are different protection methods for HVDC transmission systems including multi‐terminal ones, there are no well‐defined protection coordination strategies for transmission links protection and belonging HVDC converters under DC fault conditions. The proposed protection coordination prevents unnecessary tripping of MMCs in the multi‐area HVDC grids and supports the system with minimum effect on healthy parts. For the first time, different HVDC Converter Tripping (HCT) profiles are presented based on a fully selective protection strategy and their characteristics are discussed comprehensively. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy for multi‐terminal MMC‐based HVDC grids. Even though shunt compensation of transmission lines (TLs) is a common practice to limit the overvoltages stemming from the Ferranti effect, it may cause transient and steady‐state resonant overvoltages when one phase is left open due to the single‐pole‐open condition following the temporary phase‐to‐ground (Ph‐g) fault. Furthermore, the existing shunt reactors potentially increase the duration of the secondary arc current at the fault point and hence prevent offering fast single‐pole reclosing. To exploit the mentioned issues, in recent studies, a neutral reactor is introduced, which is installed in the neutral point of the shunt reactors; nonetheless, obtaining the appropriate amount of it is remarkably challenging. In this paper, an optimal neutral reactor (ONR) is determined based on an optimization problem, which minimizes the neutral reactor cost subject to limiting both resonant overvoltages and the duration of the secondary arc current. In modelling, the Laplace domain is employed rather than the phasor domain to consider both transient and steady‐state conditions since this technique allows having better control over transient overvoltages as well as transient secondary arc. Uncertainties in power system studies are typically managed by Monte Carlo methods or by applying some worst case assumptions. As the number ofuncertainties increases, there is a need for methods that can estimate statistical parameters from a limited number of calculations. This paper utilizes a method called the Unscented Transform together with Cornish-Fisher expansion to estimate the 2%-value of switching overvoltages using only about one tenth the number of calculations as a Monte Carlo method, with similar accuracy. The uncertainties considered are the energizing instants of the three phases. The method is illustrated through EMT simulations in PSCAD and it is shown to provide a good approximation of the 2%-value in most of the studied cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The standard 1.2/50 lightning impulse test has been important for factory testing equipment and evaluating their performance in electrical systems. In practice, however, such equipment is subject to non-standard waveform (NSW) of high frequencies, which may not be covered by standard tests. To overcome this difficulty, the present article outlines a method that simulates NSW in laboratory tests. Based on multiresolution wavelet analysis, the method considers the correlation between amplitude and entropy in the decomposition levels between waveforms. To that end, changes are proposed to the following parameters of standard impulse tests: amplitude, cut-off instant, and front time. The results show that, mostly, the combination of a lightning impulse waveform (LIW) with impulse waves cut at different times, sufficiently represent the NSW. Only when the NSW's density falls predominantly in a frequency range above 3.125 MHz, will there be need for a complementary LIW with a steep front time. The method's application allows manufacturers and concessionaires to subject the equipment to conditions that properly represent the NSW effects, through lightning impulse tests carried out at the factory. In this paper, the selection of circuit breakers for a densely-meshed sub-transmission system with relatively short transmission lines is investigated. The results highlight the significance of modeling the load at the end of lines for accurately calculating the transient recovery voltage (TRV) following the short-circuit current interruption. According to IEEE standards, assuming load modeling at the end of the transmission lines can result in a maximum discrepancy of 20 % in the calculated TRV. Supposing that the load modeling leads to a moderating effect on the calculated TRV, the difference is considered as a safety margin, and load modeling is ignored. Nevertheless, the results presented here illustrate that this assumption strongly depends on characteristics of the studied network and the load type. In a network possessing the characteristics outlined in this paper, even a passive load as small as 15 % of the nominal capacity can significantly moderate the calculated TRV, with impacts reaching up to 38 %. Conversely, modeling an active load may result in a more severe TRV than if it were disregarded. The simulation results indicate that for networks with transmission lines longer than 70 km, neglecting to model passive loads on the transmission lines still yields sufficiently accurate calculations of TRV. In a recent work, a successful power transformer white-box model for the calculation of electromagnetic transients has been presented. Although this model gives very satisfactory results, when applied to large transformers it requires a large number of auxiliary loops to model the damping. This can be problematic as it not only requires more computational effort, but the size of the input data may even preclude its use with ATP-EMTP and perhaps with other EMTP-based software that have limitations in this regard. In this work a new reduced model which enables its use with ATP-EMTP is presented. This model requires a much smaller number of circuit components than the original model, which allows the data size and simulation time to be substantially reduced without practically affecting the calculation results. This has been achieved through the reduction of the rank of the sub-matrices that characterize the inductive coupling between the main winding sections and the auxiliary loops used to model the damping. The new model has been validated by making comparisons of the frequency responses calculated using the new compact model with the ones calculated with the original model developed for the case study used by the CIGRE JWG A2/C4.52 to test the accuracy of various types of transformer models. This paper is devoted to the development of a model of an autonomous electric power system to study random processes of voltage, current and power changes in emergency and dynamic operation modes. A diagram for calculating short-circuit currents has been presented, which was focused on a typical wide range of autonomous power plants with three diesel generator units. Amodel of an autonomous power plant has been developed, allowing to solve the assignments of determining short-circuit currents and starting currents of electric power machines. The equivalent network of the studied power system for transient calculations has been presented. Thus, the voltage waveforms have been obtained. A comparative assessment of theoretical calculation methods and simulation analysis demonstrated a high degree of accuracy of the simulation results. The use of approach suggested in the article and the developed model allows to increase the accuracy of conclusions when testing the abruptly variable processes and to make the most reasonable choice of measures to improve the quality of electricity and the reliability of electrical equipment. In particular, simulation analysis and obtaining transient curves for starting powerful consumers allow more accurately choose the type of circuit breakers used and the related configuration parameters. The fast development of renewable energies leads to an increase in the power electronics penetration in transmission systems. This is particularly true if one considers a 100% renewable energies power system, where wind and solar photovoltaic energies, which make most of the renewable energies connections today, are connected to the grid through power electronics converters. Because power electronics-based generators and synchronous machines-based generators have very different dynamic behaviours, some approximations usually used to run transient simulations of transmission systems might not be optimal for future grids. The systematic use of the phasor approximation applied to the power lines, implemented in most of the Transient Simulation Programs, is indeed not relevant any more. To avoid the use of Electromagnetic Transient simulations, that are resource-demanding and time-consuming, this paper presents a novel Model Order Reduction technique for large grids with a high penetration of power electronic devices. Compared to the classical phasor approximation, this event-based state residualization approximation allows accurate transient simulations and at the same time an optimal reduction of the number of the system’s state variables depending on the observed variables, the considered events and the tolerated approximation error. The paper presents the results of experimental registrations and numerical simulations of the transient overvoltages caused by single phase intermittent arc earth fault in 35 kV network with isolated neutral. Experimental laboratory investigation is performed in order to implement appropriate arc fault model for arcs with low and discontinuous current. Single phase to earth arc fault is created in field in 35 kV network. Numerical model of the system is created in EMTP-ATP software. Several models were successfully developed to reproduce the dynamic behavior of ZnO surge arrester, but the accuracy and reliability of these models are only evaluated for residual voltage calculations. This paper presents a model developed with the specific goal of achieving reliable and accurate modeling of the energy absorbed by a ZnO surge arrester during impulsive transients. To develop and test the model, an experimental database was built, composed of responses of ZnO varistors to current impulses. The database contains the response of varistors of different classes and manufacturers, subjected to current impulses with different waveforms and amplitudes. Then, using system identification techniques, a mathematical model was proposed and validated. The proposed model was successfully tested on the same circumstances that traditional models are used and its performance was compared with the most relevant existing ZnO model. The results indicate that the developed model is an overall valid model for ZnO surge arresters and that energy calculations performed with it are more accurate and reliable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes a novel variable-inertia emulation control (VIEC) scheme that enables voltage-source-converter based high-voltage DC (VSC-HVDC) transmission systems to flexibly support AC grid frequency stability like synchronous generators. The VIEC scheme allows us to extract the energy from the augmented DC capacitance for inertia emulation by controlling the DC voltage without affecting the stability of the AC system connected on the remote side. In particular, with the proposed VIEC scheme, the inertia time constant can be flexibly emulated and its value can be automatically adjusted according to the rate of change of grid frequency as well as grid frequency deviations. This leads to more effective inertial support across different timescales. Modal analysis is carried out to investigate the impacts of inertia and DC capacitance, and to obtain the optimal control parameters. White-box models are detailed models for the investigation of the internal behavior of transformers during dielectric design. A new model of this type with significantly improved characteristics is presented in this paper. The model has been developed in state-space form, which is more flexible than an equivalent circuit and also makes it possible to optionally hide proprietary information on internal voltages. The proposed parameter determination methodology is very robust and allows the adequate representation of the damping. The methodology for determining inductive impedances and capacitances as a function of frequency using the Finite Element Method is described first. Then the fitting of the impedances obtained in the frequency domain by means of rational approximation functions is presented, which is based on the Vector Fitting algorithm in combination with Particle Swarm Optimization. The state-space model is obtained next, which is then used to perform time and frequency domain calculations. • Developing a comprehensive model of a transformer winding which incorporates skin effect, proximity effect, and eddy current losses in the core, • Studying the effects of the core at high frequencies using simulations and measurements, • Investigating the skin and proximity effects on the frequency response and impedance characteristics of transformers, • Performing empirical measurements to validate the reduced influence of the core at high frequencies. This paper investigates the high-frequency transformer losses attributed to eddy currents in both conductors and the core. A comprehensive model of a transformer winding is presented, meticulously incorporating skin and proximity effects. The winding resistance increase due to these effects is determined by applying analytical and finite element methods. The investigation highlights that eddy current losses in the magnetic core notably increase the resistance of each winding section in low frequencies. However, the impact of these losses diminishes as the winding length approaches the voltage wavelength at high frequencies. Consequently, the net magnetomotive force and flux in the core become negligible. As a result, the high-frequency impedance characteristics are remarkably similar for windings with and without a magnetic core. DC cables are supposed to withstand a number of operations involving supply-voltage peak-value time variations, such as energization, switch off and polarity inversion. It is known that voltage-supply time variations cause electric field transients in cable insulation that can last for a long time before steady-state conditions are achieved, and during this time the electric field distribution is not only driven by electrical conductivity, as in steady state, but also by permittivity, as in AC. This paper shows that highly energetic degradation phenomena, that is, partial discharges, PD, can occur during voltage transients that a DC cable has to withstand during life. This results in a cumulative damage which can cause premature insulation breakdown, at times well shorter than those expected based on a cable design which is PD free under steady-state conditions. Quantification of the damage caused by PD, based on aging and residual life models, is proposed in the paper, and it is shown that damage can be significant enough to pose a threat for cable life when operation transient rate is e.g., a few per day, and that the faster the slew rate of the supply voltage variation, the highest the cumulative damage due to PD. In terms of single-ended fault location for hybrid distribution lines, the most significant challenge is in the identification of the fault section and reflected wave from the fault point. Based on this, in this paper we introduce a new fault- section-location identification scheme for hybrid distribution feeders with only single-ended measurement. With the prior morphological spectrum-based fault-section identification technique, a location function is then built by the forward and backward traveling-wave components to describe the characteristic distribution of the traveling wave along the line. With the application of two-dimensional information (which is about time and space) of the traveling wave, it is simpler to locate the actual point of failure. The proposed scheme is investigated under different fault locations, fault resistances, sampling rates, fault inception angles, fault types, etc. The influences of immeasurable voltage traveling wave, adjacent sound lines, and measurable joint point are also investigated. As the distributed energy resources penetration level increases, the distribution system operator faces a challenging task of unintentional islanding detection. Besides islanding detection schemes are affected due to the presence of different types of distributed generation systems and smart inverters. The presence of these devices hinders the capability of islanding detection schemes. To mitigate these issues, this study proposes a practical methodology of variational mode decomposition-based energy index for islanding detection. It decomposes the sampled voltage signal at the point of common coupling into four modes/intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Among these modes/IMFs, the energy index of mode two has been utilised to detect the islanding. It is an entirely intrinsic, adaptive, and variational method. The five bus and practical distribution systems have been modelled using PSCAD/EMTDC software while considering various components' practical aspects. The technique has been tested for the mixed type of distributed generation and various transient events. The large-scale wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) based on doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) are very popular in recent years due to the numerous technical and economic benefits. With the increasing penetration level of wind energy, the latest grid codes require the DFIG-based WECSs to remain connected to the grid under grid fault scenarios and deliver the required reactive power into the grid. However, the direct connection of the stator of the DFIG to the grid makes it prone to grid disturbances, especially to voltage sag. This study proposes a modified demagnetisation control strategy to enhance the low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) capability of the DFIG under grid faults. The proposed control strategy is implemented in a coordinated approach by using the existing demagnetisation control and the addition of an external resistance in the stator side of the DFIG. The demagnetisation control damps the direct current component of the stator flux and the external resistance accelerates the damping of the transient flux by decreasing the time constant and hence, enhancing the LVRT capability of DFIG. The effectiveness of the proposed control strategy is demonstrated under both symmetrical and asymmetrical grid faults simulated system through MATLAB/Simulink®. This study presents a novel multi-rate algorithm for the co-simulation of power system transients using base-frequency dynamic phasor solver for frequency adaptive simulation of transient (BFAST) and electromagnetic transient (EMT) solvers. The BFAST solver alters its solution technique from dynamic phasors to EMT based upon the frequency contents of the waveforms being simulated. A changeover algorithm between the two solvers is also presented. The BFAST solver is then integrated with an industrial-grade EMT solver to develop a BFAST–EMT multi-rate co-simulator. The interface between the two solvers is established using transmission lines at the partitioning locations. The co-simulator combines the benefits of dynamic phasors, frequency adaptive simulation of transients, parallel processing, and multi-rate simulation. The study describes the several solution modes of the proposed co-simulator. Illustrative examples are included to demonstrate the accuracy and computational benefits of the proposed co-simulator. This paper proposes a new event-based logic of the breaker failure protection to improve power system transient stability by shortening the total clearing time of extreme contingencies involving circuit breaker failures. Stability improvement is achieved by using dual-timer protection with shorter safety margin for multi-phase faults close to the power plant and longer safety margin for remote multi-phase faults and single-phase faults. The use of the output signal obtained for a short safety margin depends on how the substation is configured. In the breaker-and-a-half configuration, this output signal is used to speed up the opening of all adjacent circuit breakers. In substations with the dual (or triple) busbar configuration the output signal obtained with a short safety margin is used to speed up the busbar splitting. A case study was performed for a real large-scale power system. Simulation results confirmed the advantages of the proposed logic. This article develops, implements, and tests a method for selecting the locations and sizes of battery storage systems (BSSs) for power systems with distributed power generation. The developed method is based on calculating the coherency index for each bus to determine its contribution to the frequency of the center of inertia (COI) during and post a transient event. Once the coherency index is calculated for all buses, the principle component analysis (PCA) is used to identify the buses with consistent low values of the coherency index. These buses are considered as candidate locations for BSSs. In addition, the lowest values of the coherency index are used to determine the required sizes of BSSs to be connected at the buses with low contributions to the frequency of the COI. The performance of the PCA with COI (PCA-COI) method is evaluated for the Barbados power system for various transient events. Performance results show that BSSs (selected using the proposed method) can effectively improve the frequency stability with minor sensitivity to the levels of distributed power generation, loading levels, and/or type or location of transient events. Contribution: A didactic methodology, based on analytical expressions and experimental validation, to describe the process of abrupt current interruption in a series RL circuit, that considers real passive components and uses a toggle switch as disconnecting device. Background: In undergraduate courses, circuits adopted in transient analysis usually assume electrical switches in their ideal form, disregarding electrical impedance and its variation over time. Texts and instructors rarely point out these simplifications, so students can become confused. There is thus a need for a suitable switch model that yields a behavior consistent with real devices, while permitting a mathematical formulation of the inductor current. Intended Outcomes: That students should understand electrical component modeling, and how models can represent the physical phenomena that occur in electrical circuits. Application Design: An experiment, designed to evaluate students’ perceptions of switch modeling, modeled a switch by using three different equivalent circuits of increasing complexity, to allow a more realistic simulation. Electrical switch modeling is described, with the models being based on measurements performed on a real circuit. Findings: Student performance was evaluated qualitatively through test scores, and quantitatively through a post-class questionnaire. In order to mitigate most power quality issues in renewable power penetrated systems, load frequency control in automatic generation control based power systems and transient stability concerns in any power system, the deviation in frequency at the point of common coupling is chosen as the driving input for SMES active power control (Δf-control). We report a rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) controlled SMES as a resilient damping device to counter exogenous uncertainties in a wind based multi machine system. Primarily, the ROCOF is contingent on the active power mismatch. SMES reference active power command is issued using a genetic algorithm tuned scheme, participating through ROCOF measurement. The non linear action of SMES is realized by controlling the converter firing angles by a smooth four-zone operation, thus determining the voltage applied across the superconducting inductor. While preserving the dynamics of the DC link and supervising the state of charge (SoC) of the inductor, the effectiveness of the aforementioned control strategy is authenticated by performing non-linear simulations in MATLAB/Simulink. In addition, the dominant modes are also tracked and it is found that the percentage increase in aggregate damping ratio is around 133% using the proposed ROCOF-SMES control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coupled nonlinear oscillators, e.g., Kuramoto models, are commonly used to analyze electrical power systems. The cage model from statistical mechanics has also been used to describe the dynamics of synchronously connected generation stations. Whereas the Kuramoto model is good for describing high inertia grid systems, the cage one allows both high and low inertia grids to be modelled. This is illustrated by comparing both the synchronization time and relaxation towards synchronization of each model by treating their equations of motion in a common framework rooted in the dynamics of many coupled phase oscillators. A solution of these equations via matrix continued fractions is implemented rendering the characteristic relaxation times of a grid-generator system over a wide range of inertia and damping. Following an abrupt change in the dynamical system, the power output and both generator and grid frequencies all exhibit damped oscillations now depending on the (finite) grid inertia. This paper presents a study on ferroresonance occurring in a high voltage 400 kV transmission grid due to energization of power transformer under no-load conditions. The system scenarios analyzed in the present paper are considered as critical for development and modernization plans as currently announced by the national grid operator in Poland. The PSCADsimulation modelwas developed and applied for several study cases of a system with double-circuit arrangement of a transmission line. It is shown that the ferroresonant oscillations can be initiated by two-phase switching operation of a line circuit breaker. The impact of the double-circuit length on the ferroresonance mode and severity is demonstrated with the use of the Poincaré map analysis and Short Time Fourier Transform. It is demon- strated that the length of the transmission line that is mutually coupled in the double-circuit arrangement has a significant impact on the ferroresonance occurrence and on its mode. As the ferroresonance can pose severe threat to the power system components due to the severe overvoltage and overcurrent oscillations, the analysis presented in this paper demonstrates the necessity of the ferroresonance analyses for any re-designed transmission system. With increase of practical power system complexity, power system online stability assessment and control is more and more important. Application of the traditional model-driven methods is always limited by contradiction between accuracy and efficiency, while data-driven methods demonstrate strong abilities for the online decision-making support with advancement of various data mining techniques. Instead of direct application of data-driven methods in the power system, this paper first discusses feasible integration approaches for the model-driven and data-driven methods based on the existing achievements, and then, proposes to integrate both methods for the power system online frequency stability assessment and control. The integrated method consists of frequency dynamics prediction and load shedding procedure. In frequency dynamics prediction procedure, integration of system frequency response (SFR) model and the extreme learning machine (ELM)-based learning model is applied, where basic physical causality is kept in the SFR model and ELM is used to fit and correct error of the SFR. The ELM also plays a part in load shedding prediction model construction by digging out mapping relationship from samples. Finally, the proposed prediction and control scheme for the frequency stability is verified by simulations on WSCC 9-bus, New England 39-bus, and NPCC 140-bus system. The absolute requirement to increase the amount of energy generation from renewable sources e.g., predominantly asynchronously connected wind turbines and photovoltaic installations, may in practice during transient events (where frequency changes are examined) excite oscillatory response of the power output of large grid connected synchronous generators. The response of such generators must be controlled either by varying the applied torque of a turbine or by altering the electromagnetic torque in the airgap. Choosing the latter, the adequacy of a voltage regulator, particularly that of the embedded power system stabilizer (PSS) circuit, is investigated using the IEEE PSS1A model for the automatic voltage regulator of a synchronous generator driven by a gas turbine. The response is obtained via closed form analytic solutions for both small (linear) and large (nonlinear) scale transient events in the energy grid system. In this paper we present the dilemma dealing with the choice of speech segment duration and the calculation of speech signal quality in the packet telephone network of Electricity supply industry (ESI). The analyzed signal is packetized by one packet. The characteristic of this network is that disturbances of long duration in power system produce burst packet loss. The longer speech segments increase the packet delay, but decrease the number of lost packets in one burst, and vice versa. Here we present why it is better to choose speech segments of short duration. Transmission faults caused by recent wildfires in California have induced the disconnection of utility-scale converters in photovoltaic (PV) power plants. Postmortem investigations reported that tripping commands were caused by phase-locked loops (PLLs) and dc-side dynamics, which are typically unmodeled in classical transient stability studies. Since existing simulation packages rely on simplified models that neglect these dynamics, they have a limited capability to predict converter behavior during faults. To address this shortcoming, we set forth a positive-sequence model for PV power plants that is derived from physics and controls first principles. As seen on utility-scale three-phase converters, the model includes PLLs, dc-side dynamics, and closed-loop controllers. Instances of the developed model are integrated into illustrative power systems containing conventional generators. This paper presents a novel frequency-domain approach toward the control design for parallel grid-connected voltage source inverters (VSIs) with LCL output filters. The proposed method allows the controllers of multiple VSIs to be designed in a single step, and inherently attenuates the resonances introduced by the output filters and coupling effects while guaranteeing stability. Performance specifications such as desired closed-loop bandwidth, decoupling or robustness toward multi-model uncertainty can be specified through frequency-domain constraints. Furthermore, controllers can be designed in a plug-and-play fashion. The designed controllers are equivalent in structure to multi-variable PI controllers with filters. As the control design is based on the frequency response of the system, the algorithm is independent of the model order, which allows the use of large and high-order models. The performance of the method is demonstrated on a relevant example of a low-voltage distribution grid with five VSIs, and the results are validated both in numerical simulation using MATLAB/Simulink as well as in power-hardware-in-the-loop experiments. The renewable energy source based generating technologies and flexible demand and storage devices exhibit significant temporal and spatial uncertainties in generating and loading profiles and introduce additional level of uncertainty in network operation. The dynamic behaviors of such a network can be affected and the stable operation may be compromised. This paper proposes a probabilistic analysis approach for the evaluation of the effect of uncertain parameters on power system voltage and angular stability. Load margin, the damping of critical eigenvalues and the transient stability index have been chosen as the relevant stability indices for voltage stability, small-disturbance stability, and transient stability analysis, respectively. The Morris screening sensitivity analysis method coupled with a multivariate Gaussian copula to account for parameter correlations is used for the priority ranking of uncertain parameters. The approach is illustrated on a number of case studies using modified IEEE 68-bus NETS-NYPS test system. The results obtained in this paper reveal that the critical parameters appear as groups if the input dataset is correlated, and, hence even a parameter (which may be uninfluential individually) can have a significant impact on system dynamic behavior due to its correlation with other influential parameters. This paper investigates the enactment of battery energy storage system (BESS) and static compensator (STATCOM) in enhancing large-scale power system transient voltage and frequency stability, and improving power export capacity within two interconnected power systems. A PI-lead and lead-lag controlled BESS is proposed for multimachine power system to provide simultaneous voltage and frequency regulation within the defined battery state-of-charge ranges and an equivalent Finnish transmission grid is used to evaluate the system performance. According to Australian National Electricity Market grid requirements, the performances of the proposed control schemes are compared with conventional PI controlled BESS and STATCOM under multiple temporary and permanent fault conditions. In addition, two adjacent disturbance events are also applied to evaluate system performance with BESS and STATCOM. Through simulation results, it is shown that when there is a ${\text{44}\%}$ increase in power export and the STATCOM fails, incorporating BESS improves the performance and justifies the novelty of this study. Moreover, the proposed lead-lag controlled BESS manifests better transient performance than BESS with PI-lead and traditional PI controller, in the event of divergent temporary and permanent faults. The increasing utilization of HVAC underground power cables gives rise to technical challenges related to the occurrence of electromagnetic transients. This paper discusses measurements with sensors based on open air capacitances sensing the electric fields from the line having a wide frequency bandwidth and excellent electromagnetic compatibility performance. However, since the sensors are open air capacitors, they also intercept field lines from other phases and measurement decoupling is necessary. Results from measurements, using the differentiating/Integrating technique, at a 380 kV mixed overhead line underground power cable connection obtained at a transition point and at a substation are presented and compared with PSCAD/EMTDC simulations. The measurement system gives accurate results for low and high frequency transients, while the effect of uncertainties in the decoupling is minor. For switching transients, the simulation model was validated in terms of measured and simulated voltage waveforms resulting in similar maximum overvoltage and frequency content. As a most widely applied real-time digital simulation system, real time digital simulation (RTDS) is however quite limited on scale of simulation by the number of hardware purchased. Through frequency-dependent network equivalent (FDNE), scale of simulation of RTDS could be largely increased by frequency equivalent on limited hardware. Based on basic principles of FDNE, function limitations and problem are analysed, taking the Shanghai Sijing district power grid as an example; detailed simulation model and FDNE equivalent module are built, transient characteristics under faults before and after FDNE equivalent are analysed. Furthermore, the fault characteristics of high-voltage direct current (HVDC)-Sijing power grid is also studied, which provides a realistic means for real-time digital simulation of AC–HVDC hybrid power grid with limited hardware of RTDS. Switching AC filter may cause harmonic impact, which may lead to commutation failure of HVDC system. Here, the commutation failure mechanism of HVDC system caused by AC filter switching is studied. The circuit and mathematical model of the transient process simulation of filter switching are established, and the time-domain solution of the overvoltage of each filter including voltage reduction and distortion is given. The commutation failure mechanism of HVDC system is analysed based on the commutation failure analysis method of harmonic voltage and time area. This paper presents a comprehensive approach toward the design of primary and secondary controllers in low-inertia power grids with mixed lines and a large amount of inverter-interfaced generation. First, a complete dynamic phasor model is developed that represents the electromagnetic and electromechanic dynamics of lines, inverters, synchronous machines, and constant power loads. The model offers a straightforward way to combine white-, gray- and black-box models, and its structure lends itself well to control design. In a second step, it is shown how a recently developed robust fixed-structure control design method can be applied to the challenging and relevant problem of primary and secondary control in medium-and low-voltage grids. A comprehensive three-part simulation example demonstrates how frequency and voltage transient stability and performance can be achieved through a methodical design process. It is also shown how nonstandard performance specifications such as proportional power sharing can be directly incorporated in the design. Finally, a distributed secondary controller from the literature is reformulated and designed using the presented framework, and all results are validated in nonlinear simulation. When solving network algebraic equations during power system transient stability simulations, the nonzero elements in the independent vector and the elements needed in the solution vector are determined by the location of source nodes. Different kinds of source nodes will have a different influence on the solution process of the network equations. According to these features of source nodes, sparsity techniques, more specifically, the node ordering algorithm and sparse vector method, are improved in this paper. A new heuristic ordering algorithm is proposed to enhance the efficiency of the sparse vector method by reducing the number of nodes in the factorization path set of source nodes while maintaining the sparsity of the factorized matrix. A multipath sparse vector method is proposed to avoid the unnecessary computation in the iterative solution process of the network equations, whereby the idea of the method is to form different paths for different types of source nodes. Different paths are used to solve different elements in the solution vector. The correctness and effectiveness of these improvements is proven by the simulation results of three practical power systems (up to 13 490 nodes) and six IEEE examples (up to 162 nodes). This paper provides a detailed analysis of the temporal development of fault currents in a multiterminal high-voltage direct-current (MT-HVDC) grid composed of a bipolar converter configuration. The sequence of events following the occurrence of a pole-to-ground fault is identified, divided into three distinct periods; namely, submodule capacitor discharge, arm current decay, and ac in-feed periods. The critical parameters that have a significant impact on the fault current in each period are discussed. The impacts of various parameters of the HVDC grid such as the size of the current limiting reactor, ac grid strength, as well as the location of the fault within the grid are studied through PSCAD/EMTDC simulation. Then, a fault current interruption process using models of various HVDC circuit breaker technologies and the resulting stresses are studied. Both serve as important inputs to define test procedures. It is found that the HVDC circuit breakers are subjected to not only dc current and voltage stresses but also energy stress. These stresses are translated into test requirements. Arresters are widely used in power systems to protect other equipment against overvoltages. However, in some conditions, they can't operate successfully. One of the disturbances leading to the failure of the riser pole arresters is the ferroresonance overvoltages. In this paper, at first the influence of different transformer simulation models of ATP software on the occurrence of ferroresonance is studied and then the effect of ferroresonance on the riser pole arrester has been scrutinized through the thermal and electrical performance of the arrester in an underground distribution system. The results show that the arrester temperature rises due to energy dissipation in a ferroresonance circumstance, which indeed may result into the explosion of the arrester. Also, applying different models of the transformer in the ATP software and comparing the results, it is shown that the available models do not show the same effect on the arrester. Power cables undergo various types of overstressing conditions during their operation that influence the integrity of their insulation systems. This causes accelerated ageing and might lead to their premature failure in severe cases. This paper presents an investigation of the impacts of various dynamic electric fields produced by ripples, polarity reversal and transient switching impulses on partial discharge (PD) activity within solid dielectrics with the aim of considering such phenomena in high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable systems. Appropriate terminal voltages of a generic HVDC converter were reproduced — with different harmonic contaminations — and applied to the test samples. The effects of systematic operational polarity reversal and superimposed switching impulses with the possibility of transient polarity reversal were also studied in this investigation. The experimental results show that the PD is greatly affected by the dynamic changes of electric field represented by polarity reversal, ripples and switching. The findings of this study will assist in understanding the behaviour of PDs under HVDC conditions and would be of interest to asset managers considering the effects of such conditions on the insulation diagnostics. Traditionally, extra high voltage (EHV) transmission systems consist exclusively of overhead lines (OHL) but in the recent years the utilization of high voltage AC (HVAC) power cables is increasing due to environmental, political and operational aspects. To study the impact of HVAC power cables on temporary overvoltages and slow front transients, a simulation model of the large-scale network is required. Guidelines concerning the modeling detail for the surrounding network need to be established to ensure sufficient accurate results. Existing guidelines for purely OHL transmission networks may not be adequate since the integration of HVAC power cables shift the harmonic impedance of the network to lower frequencies and that can affect the extent of the needed simulation model. Much effort can be saved from obtaining detailed data for an extensive but proper model, but a less detailed model might not describe the network behavior with sufficient accuracy. In this study, simplification options are considered, for which the time to construct and analyze a simulation model can be reduced. The simplification options are compared with the reference model (full detail), and judged based on three indicators for the level of accuracy: frequency and amplitude of the main resonance, and maximum over-voltage. As a result, guidelines on the extent of the simulated network and in which detail the model has to be built are proposed. The inverse approach, i.e. increasing level of detail until simulation results hardly change leads to similar results, but requires equivalent short-circuit networks for the rest of the grid. This paper presents the modular-multilevel-converter (MMC) control interoperability (IOP) and interaction within the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC)-based power system. IOP is a crucial issue in the large-scale HVDC grid with different suppliers. To accommodate future multi-vendor HVDC grids developments, this article comprehensively investigates the MMC control IOP issue. Firstly, the most commonly adopted proportional-integral (PI) control and other non-linear controllers, e.g., model predictive control (MPC), back-stepping control (BSC), and sliding mode control (SMC), are constructed for MMC. Then, the IOP simulations are carried out in a multi-terminal direct current (MTDC) system in real-time digital simulator (RTDS) environment. The most frequent transients of the practical projects, e.g., power flow changing, wind speed changing, and DC/AC grid faults, are simulated with eight different scenarios. Each scenario presents different control capabilities in maintaining system stability, more precisely, the scenarios with non-linear controllers show faster settling time and fewer DC voltage and power variations. Controller switchings are also achieved without bringing large system oscillations. This letter presents a closed-form expression for ground return admittance for a system of underground cables. It is based on the approximation of the infinite integral found using a quasi-TEM (transverse electromagnetic) formulation of the electromagnetic field. The results indicate that the frequency behavior of the closed-form expression provides useful responses up to a few megahertz, thus being a suitable alternative to the numerically challenging infinite integrals. This paper presents a novel approach to modeling magnetic cores for high-frequency transient analyses in power system applications. A method is presented to obtain a frequency-dependent, nonlinear equivalent circuit model of magnetic cores, suitable for simulations of transients in high-frequency and high-current conditions. The model can be used in any Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP)-like simulation software for power system transient analyses and hardware design of transient mitigation solutions. The model has been developed based on the frequency characteristics of the complex impedance of a magnetic core, measured for different operating points on the magnetization curve. Based on the measured characteristics and on some basic material properties, a nonlinear equivalent model composed of a set of lumped elements was established. The presented method is generic; however, the results are presented for a magnetic core of nanocrystalline type and the model implementation is shown in EMTP simulation software. The exemplary model is dedicated for the frequency range $f=$ 1 kHz $\div $100 MHz, and for the current range $I=0\div 10$ kA. Multi-terminal HVDC is an important new technology for bulk power transfer from large sources of remote renewables to large load centers. Recently MTDC grids have become more technically feasible due to improvements in VSC based converters, which can reverse currents and generally have greater control than LCC. Furthermore, emerging DC breakers technology unlocks the possibility of de-energizing only the faulted section of an MTDC without losing the whole grid. The protection relaying in such grids is not trivial: it must be very reliable, robust to the converter control system׳s effect on the post fault transients and act quickly, before the fault current develops beyond the presently modest interrupt capability of DC breakers. Within this challenging environment, this paper discusses in detail the important considerations for designing MTDC protection, including accurate modeling of the converter topology, associated control scheme and the DC link itself, supported by the results of novel transient simulation studies. This paper presents the analysis of possible transient overvoltages that can be generated during vacuum circuit-breaker (VCB) operation at the connection point of a photovoltaic powerplant. A typical switching event that is related to the VCB concerns energization and de-energization of the unloaded transformer. However, at the typical photovoltaic powerplant, the transformer is fed by an inverter equipped with LC (or LCL) filters that are necessary for limitation of harmonics and ripple in voltage and current. From the point of view of switching operations, the inductance and capacitance of the low-voltage (LV)-side connected filter affect the natural frequency of the transformer, which is reflected by different transient system response during VCB operation. In this paper, laboratory measurement of overvoltages generated during distribution transformer switching by means of VCBs is analyzed. The impact of the LC filter connected at the LV side on the overvoltages suppression was studied. A procedure for computing customized wavelets suitable for identifying the location of a fault along the length of a transmission line is proposed. Measuring the time difference of arrival (TDOA) between two consecutive transient reflections or the TDOA between the two initial peaks of two synchronized voltage/current bus measurements provides an accurate fault-location estimate. Reliable TDOA estimates can be obtained only when the transformed fault signals consist of short/peaked pulses that arrive on a bus with a small group delay. Our customization method improves the “peakedness” and shortens the group delay of the transient signal by maximizing a suitable peakedness objective function. It is shown that this approach is superior in terms of accuracy compared to the “classic” (Daubechies) wavelet-based technique found in the literature. The generalization of the probabilistic lightning limiting parameter (LLP) method for high-voltage substation lightning performance estimation due to the discharges into connected overhead lines (OHLs) is described. The method improvement is made only for the case of lightning strokes to the shield wire of OHL, causing back-flashover in front of the substation. The improved LLP method is illustrated at the insulation coordination study of the 400-kV line with long connecting cable with direct entry into the gas-insulated substation of the hydroelectric plant. The number of surge arrester sets and sensitivity analyses of the number of connected step-up transformers influence to the mean time between failures of the 400-kV transformer and equipment insulation are investigated.
