With the popularity of smart meters, the frequent information exchange between smart grids and consumers leads to easy leakage of consumers' electricity consumption data. These leaked electricity consumption data are obtained by some malicious attackers and used to infer consumers' behavioural patterns by non‐intrusive load monitoring (NILM), which seriously threatens consumers' privacy. Therefore, the multi‐agent Hidden Markov energy management model is proposed in this paper to safeguard the privacy of consumers. First, a weighted Bayesian risk model is proposed, which combines privacy leakage risks and energy storage system (ESS) losses in a microgrid with multiple agents. Next, a three‐loop model for lithium batteries is constructed to quantify the capacity degradation and cost issues of the ESS. Finally, the multi‐objective optimization problem is resolved by integrating the Bayesian risk model with a hidden Markov model to simulate attackers. The proposed multi‐agent Markov decision process method is validated on Electricity Consumption and Occupancy (ECO) dataset, and control strategies are evaluated based on different weights in the Bayesian risk model. The results demonstrate that by incorporating the multi‐agent approach and energy storage system capacity degradation into the privacy protection strategy, the lifespan of the energy storage system can be significantly increased. Given the massive deployment of smart meters at international level, it is necessary to develop methodologies to extract knowledge from the data that they can provide. To this end, it is necessary to associate energy, socio-demographic and/or technical-constructive data, because this is the only way to identify profiles with their corresponding relevant variables or drivers. The usual problem is that socio-technical information about users is limited or non-existent, as it is costly to collect. Consequently, this work presents as a novelty the use of census information to characterize groups of urban segments with similar daily electricity load curves, which avoids the need to collect socio-technical information through specific surveys or direct measurements. In this way, relevant variables are identified in the determination of consumption patterns in the study case (Montevideo-Uruguay) and they are used to infer the daily behavior of those sectors of the city that don't have this information. In this paper, we propose a novel methodology for estimating missing data in energy consumption datasets. Conventional data imputation methods are not suitable for these datasets, because they are time series with special characteristics and because, for some applications, it is quite important to preserve the shape of the daily energy profile. Our answer to this need is the use of autoencoders. First, we split the problem into two subproblems: how to estimate the total amount of daily energy, and how to estimate the shape of the daily energy profile. We encode the shape as a new feature that can be modeled and predicted using autoencoders. In this way, the problem of imputation of profile data are reduced to two relatively simple problems on which conventional methods can be applied. However, the two predictions are related, so special care should be taken when reconstructing the profile. We show that, as a result, our data imputation methodology produces plausible profiles where other methods fail. The growing availability of smart meter data has facilitated the development of energy-saving services like demand response, personalized energy feedback, and non-intrusive-load-monitoring applications, all of which heavily rely on advanced machine learning algorithms trained on energy consumption datasets. To ensure the accuracy and reliability of these services, real-world smart meter data collection is crucial. The Plegma dataset described in this paper addresses this need bfy providing whole- house aggregate loads and appliance-level consumption measurements at 10-second intervals from 13 different households over a period of one year. It also includes environmental data such as humidity and temperature, building characteristics, demographic information, and user practice routines to enable quantitative as well as qualitative analysis. Plegma is the first high-frequency electricity measurements dataset in Greece, capturing the consumption behavior of people in the Mediterranean area who use devices not commonly included in other datasets, such as AC and electric-water boilers. Internet of Things (IoTs) is a promising technology that combines communication and data networking. Integration of Smart Grids (SGs) and IoT will fulfill an increased demand for energy requirements by transforming the reliable and efficient traditional power grids. The SG enables bi-directional transmission between the Service Provider (SP) and Smart Meter (SM) to send and receive information regarding electricity consumption over a public channel. The public channel allows an adversary to intercept the information exchanged between them and tamper with the SM as it is installed outside which leads to forging or modification of the messages and privacy violation. In addition, the SM has limited computational and storage capacity. To protect SM privacy and securely communicate in the SG network, Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) based Authentication and Key Agreement (AKA) schemes were suggested in the literature. However, they may suffer from the machine learning modeling attack and several other security issues. Thus, we propose a finite state machine enabled controlled PUF based AKA (PF-AKA) Framework for the IoT based SG (IoT-SG) network. The PF-AKA framework is verified formally using the Real-or-Random (RoR) model, AVISPA tool, and BAN logic. It shows that PF-AKA achieves the security requirements along with protection from the SM physical and modeling attacks. The performance analysis is carried out and it represents that the PF-AKA yields competitive computation and communication costs compared to AKA schemes in the literature for the IoT-SG network. A smart meter is an automation technology that sends real-time power consumption of electric appliances to the outsourced cloud through the aggregator node. An outsourced cloud is used by the Utility providers to release computation and storage overhead. The real-time smart meter data helps in the management of demand and supply in the smart grid. However, the real-time smart meter data exposes the privacy of smart meter customers and inefficient aggregated smart meter data results in unbalanced power management decisions in the smart grid. Therefore, a smart meter data storage (SMDS) model is proposed that aggregates the encrypted smart meter data at the fog node with the property of homomorphic encryption and stores it on the outsourced cloud. Two clouds are used to process the smart meter data and only the utility provider is able to retrieve the actual power consumption of the smart meter. Additionally, a secure query processing model is designed to retrieve the smart meter data on the outsourced cloud. In response to the practical application of the electricity consumption information collection system in the online monitoring business of measuring equipment, the author introduces a method for analyzing the abnormal flying away of electricity meters based on the IoT technology LOF local anomaly detection algorithm. This method can effectively determine whether the abnormal energy representation value belongs to accidental or trend anomalies by calculating the abnormal factor of the energy representation value. After excluding the influence of accidental data, perform a secondary judgment on the abnormal flight of the energy meter. The experimental results show that when calculating the LOF factor of the electricity meter, it can be found that the LOF curve data range is mainly concentrated in the range of 0.8 to 1.3, and there is no significant change in the LOF factor near the mutation point. In a smart grid, collected electricity consumption periodically from smart meters allow entities to bill the customers, power company to operate the grid successfully, and users to control the use of their appliances. However, energy consumptions of users should be protected since the data provides the user's daily habit that an adversary uses the data to extract useful information about the users. Moreover, users' identities should not be disclosed to untrusted entities since the untrusted entities map identities to their real identities. In this paper, we propose a system that protects users' data privacy using multi-pseudorandom identities and a randomization technique. Moreover, the proposed work provides fast authentication for smart meters to send their readings to data aggregators. Furthermore, the proposed work is based on consortium blockchain to eliminate a single point of failure and provides transparency of messages and operations. Behind the meter (BTM) distributed energy resources (DERs), such as photovoltaic (PV) systems, battery energy storage systems (BESSs), and electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructures, have experienced significant growth in residential locations. Accurate load forecasting is crucial for the efficient operation and management of these resources. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of the state-of-the-art technologies and models employed in the load forecasting process of BTM DERs in recent years. The review covers a wide range of models, from traditional approaches to machine learning (ML) algorithms, discussing their applicability. A rigorous validation process is essential to ensure the model's precision and reliability. Cross-validation techniques can be utilized to reduce overfitting risks, while using multiple evaluation metrics offers a comprehensive assessment of the model's predictive capabilities. Comparing the model's predictions with real-world data helps identify areas for improvement and further refinement. Additionally, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has recently announced its plan to collect electricity consumption data from identified U.S.-based crypto mining companies, which can exhibit abnormal energy consumption patterns due to rapid fluctuations. Hence, some real-world case studies have been presented that focus on irregular energy consumption patterns in residential buildings equipped with BTM DERs. These abnormal activities underscore the importance of implementing robust anomaly detection techniques to identify and address such deviations from typical energy usage profiles. Background: Monitoring the lifestyles of older adults helps promote independent living and ensure their well-being. The common technologies for home monitoring include wearables, ambient sensors, and smart household meters. While wearables can be intrusive, ambient sensors require extra installation, and smart meters are becoming integral to smart city infrastructure. Research Gap: The previous studies primarily utilized high-resolution smart meter data by applying Non-Intrusive Appliance Load Monitoring (NIALM) techniques, leading to significant privacy concerns. Meanwhile, some Japanese power companies have successfully employed low-resolution data to monitor lifestyle patterns discreetly. Scope and Methodology: This study develops a lifestyle monitoring system for older adults using low-resolution smart meter data, mapping electricity consumption to appliance usage. The power consumption data are collected at 15-min intervals, and the background power threshold distinguishes between the active and inactive periods (0/1). The system quantifies activity through an active score and assesses daily routines by comparing these scores against the long-term norms. With the rapid development of the information age, smart meters play an important role in the smart grid. However, there are more and more attacks on smart meters, which mainly focus on the identity authentication of smart meters and the security protection of electricity consumption data. In this paper, an efficient lightweight smart meter authentication scheme is proposed based on the Chinese Remainder Theorem (CRT), which can realize the revocation of a single smart meter user by publishing a secret random value bound to the smart meter identity. The proposed scheme not only protects the security of smart meter electricity consumption data by using encryption, but also resists identity attacks from both internal and external adversaries by using hash functions and timestamps. Experiment shows that the proposed scheme has lower computation overhead and communication overhead than other authentication schemes and is more suitable for smart meter authentication. Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) has emerged as a pivotal technology in energy management applications by enabling precise monitoring of individual appliance energy consumption without the requirements of intrusive sensors or smart meters. In this technique, the load disaggregation for the individual device is accrued by the recognition of their current signals by employing machine learning (ML) methods. This research paper conducts a comprehensive comparative analysis of various ML techniques applied to NILM, aiming to identify the most effective methodologies for accurate load disaggregation. The study employs a diverse dataset comprising high-resolution electricity consumption data collected from an Estonian household. The ML algorithms, including deep neural networks based on long short-term memory networks (LSTM), extreme gradient boost (XgBoost), logistic regression (LR), and dynamic time warping with K-nearest neighbor (DTW-KNN) are implemented and evaluated for their performance in load disaggregation. Key evaluation metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score are utilized to assess the effectiveness of each technique in capturing the nuanced energy consumption patterns of diverse appliances. Results indicate that the XgBoost-based model demonstrates superior performance in accurately identifying and disaggregating individual loads from aggregated energy consumption data. Smart meter deployment in commercial and industrial sector provides an amount of power data that allows analyze the behaviors of commercial and industrial consumers. However, few studies pay attention to commercial and industrial end-users of energy consumption pattern. Besides, conventional methods for load profiling faces the problem of extracting features of smart meter data for making the clustering practical as well as confirming the appropriate clustering parameters. This paper resolves these problems via the unsupervised clustering algorithm that combines significant statistics and behavioral characteristics, and particle swarm optimization and simulated annealing algorithms are implemented to improve the global searching ability of clustering algorithm. A case study of the electricity consumption behaviors of 560 commercial and industrial consumers for a southwest Chinese city is investigated from 2018-2022. Relying on the visual test and validity indices scoring, the algorithm obtains an effective classification of three groups. The digitization of distribution power systems has revolutionized the way data are collected and analyzed. In this paper, the critical task of harnessing this information to identify irregularities and anomalies in electricity consumption is tackled. The focus is on detecting non-technical losses (NTLs) and energy theft within distribution networks. A comprehensive overview of the methodologies employed to uncover NTLs and energy theft is presented, leveraging measurements of electricity consumption. The most common scenarios and prevalent cases of anomalies and theft among consumers are identified. Additionally, statistical indicators tailored to specific anomalies are proposed. In this research paper, the practical implementation of numerous artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms, including the artificial neural network (ANN), ANFIS, autoencoder neural network, and K-mean clustering, is highlighted. These algorithms play a central role in our research, and our primary objective is to showcase their effectiveness in identifying NTLs. Real-world data sourced directly from distribution networks are utilized. Additionally, we carefully assess how well statistical methods work and compare them to AI techniques by testing them with real data. The artificial neural network (ANN) accurately identifies various consumer types, exhibiting a frequency error of 7.62%. In contrast, the K-means algorithm shows a slightly higher frequency error of 9.26%, while the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) fails to detect the initial anomaly type, resulting in a frequency error of 11.11%. Our research suggests that AI can make finding irregularities in electricity consumption even more effective. This study's object is an energy efficiency of residential sector. The work is aimed at solving the task to improve the energy efficiency of the housing sector by devising technical solutions for monitoring and managing energy consumption and microclimate parameters of buildings. The proposed proactive management system for residential buildings consists of multi-sensors measuring CO2, temperature and humidity, smart meters of heat and electricity consumption, and smart plugs. The equipment is combined into single system through an integration controller with remote user access through an interactive web interface. A feature of the technical solution is the ability to collect, process, visualize, and archive data on the consumption of energy, as well as on the key parameters of the microclimate of residential premises. The advantages of the system are its flexibility due to the possibility of integrating additional devices during operation, as well as the use of standard communication protocols, which enables the interchangeability of component elements. The implementation and testing were carried out under the conditions of a real pilot site. The use of the system in practice confirmed the efficiency and stability of the operation, making it possible to obtain data on the parameters of energy consumption and microclimate and devising recommendations for reducing energy consumption at the pilot site. It was established that the microclimate meets the requirements of the standards (air temperature is about 22 °С while relative humidity does not exceed 60 %). Decrease in energy consumption can be achieved by reducing the temperature of the heat carrier in the absence of residents, as well as by considering the influence of weather conditions. The increasing concern for environmental conservation has spurred government initiatives towards energy efficiency. One of the key research areas in this regard is demand response, particularly focusing on differential pricing initiatives such as Time-of-Use (ToU). Differential tariffs are typically designed based on mathematical or statistical models analyzing historical electricity price and consumption data. This study proposes a methodology for identifying time intervals suitable for implementing ToU energy tariffs, achieved by analyzing electric power demand variability to estimate demand flexibility potential. The methodology transforms consumption data into variation via the coefficient of variation and, then, employs k-means data analysis techniques and the a priori algorithm. Tested with real data from smart meters in the Colombian electrical system, the methodology successfully identified time intervals with potential for establishing ToU tariffs. Additionally, no direct relationship was found between external variables such as socioeconomic level, user type, climate, and consumption variability. The increasing demand for electricity in daily life highlights the need for Smart Cities (SC) to use energy efficiently. Both technical and Non‐Technical Losses (NTL), particularly those resulting from electricity theft, present powerful obstacles; NTL alone can reach billions of dollars. Although Machine Learning (ML) based approaches for NTL detection have been embraced by numerous utilities, there is still a lack of thorough analysis of these methods. Limited research exists on NTL identification evaluation criteria and unbalanced data management in the context of SC. This research compares ML algorithms and data balancing methods to optimize electricity consumption detection. The given research applied the 15 ML techniques of Logistic regression, Bernoulli naive Bayes, Gaussian naive Bayes, K‐Nearest Neighbour, perceptron, passive‐aggressive classifier, quadratic discriminant analysis, SGD classifier, ridge classifier, linear discriminant analysis, decision tree, nearest centroid classifier, multi‐nomial naive Bayes, complement naive Bayes and dummy classifier. While SMOTE, AdaSyn, NRAS, and CCR are considered for data balancing. AUC, F1‐score, and seven relevant performance metrics were used for comparison. We have also implemented SHapely Additive exPlanations (SHAP) for feature importance and model interpretation. Smart meters are devices that provide detailed information about the energy consumed by specific electricity supply points, such as homes, offices, and businesses. Data from smart meters are useful for modeling energy systems, predicting electricity consumption, and understanding human behavior. We present the first smart meter dataset from Spanish electricity supply points, expanding the geographic diversity of available data on energy consumption at the household level and reducing biases in existing data, which typically come from a limited number of countries. The dataset consists of 25,559 raw hourly time series with an average length of nearly three years, spanning from November 2014 to June 2022. It also includes three subsets obtained by segmenting and cleaning the raw time series data, each focusing on the periods before, during, and after the COVID-19 lockdowns in Spain. This dataset is a valuable resource for studying electricity consumption patterns and behaviors that emerge in response to different natural experiments, such as nationwide and regional lockdowns, nighttime curfews, and changes in electricity pricing. Considering the growing demand for electricity in industrial parks, understanding their electric power load patterns is critical for improving energy efficiency and ensuring the rational utilization of energy resources. However, the detailed electric power load data of various buildings in industrial parks are rarely available and accessible, which hinders the related studies. In this context, we present the electric power load data of 6 years (from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2021) for various types of buildings in an industrial park in Suzhou, China. The data are obtained from smart meters and have various time resolutions (i.e., 5 minutes, 30 minutes, and 1 hour). Data aggregation is considered as the crucial aspect of the smart grid to assess the electricity consumption information which acts as a basis of management decision making for utility provider. However, smart meters are lightweight devices therefore, subject to technical crashes and deferment in forwarding their data that hinders the efficient and accurate communication of data. Consequently, the consumption data of the faulty smart meters remain uncommunicated which can affect the accuracy of the final aggregate significantly and can misguide the utility companies in the power management decisions. Therefore, considering the stated challenge, a novel AI-driven fault-tolerant aggregation model is proposed that is established on the prediction mechanism of artificial neural network. The novelty of the proposed work lies in the efficient fault-handling of unavailability of data by utilizing previous available information. Furthermore, the proposed model also provides mechanism to track the affected meters and acknowledge the utility provider. The experimental simulation and comparison results reveal the outperforming results of the proposed model from state-of-the-art works which is validated using root mean squared error and mean absolute error. Smart Grids (SG) encompass the utilization of large-scale data, advanced communication infrastructure, and enhanced efficiency in the management of electricity demand, distribution, and productivity through the application of machine learning techniques. The utilization of machine learning facilitates the creation and implementation of proactive and automated decision-making methods for smart grids. In this paper, we provide an experimental study to understand the power demands of consumers (domestic and commercial) in SGs. The power demand source is considered a smart plug reading dataset. This dataset is large dataset and consists of more than 850 user plug readings. From the dataset, we have extracted two different user data. Additionally, their hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly power demand is analysed individually. Next, these power demand patterns are utilized as a time series problem and the data is transformed into 5 neighbour problems to predict the next hour, day, week, and month power demand. To learn from the transformed data, Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and Linear Regression (LR) ML algorithms are used. According to the conducted experiments, we found that ANN provides more accurate prediction than LR Additionally, we observe that the prediction of hourly demand is more accurate than the prediction of daily, weekly, and monthly demand. Load forecasting is crucial for the economic and secure operation of power systems. Extreme weather events, such as extreme heat and typhoons, can lead to more significant fluctuations in power consumption, making load forecasting more difficult. At present, due to the lack of relevant public data, the research on load forecasting under extreme weather events is still blank, so it is necessary to release a large-scale load dataset containing extreme weather events. The dataset includes electricity consumption data of industrial and commercial users under extreme weather events such as typhoons and extreme heat, which are collected at 15-minute intervals. The data is collected over six years from smart meters installed at the power entry points of users in southern China. The dataset consists of electricity consumption data from 386 industrial and commercial users in 17 industries, with more than 50 million records. Electricity theft is a primary concern for utility providers, as it leads to substantial financial losses. To address the issue, a novel extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost)‐based model utilizing the consumers' electricity consumption patterns for analysis is proposed for electricity theft detection (ETD). To remove the imbalance in the real‐world electricity consumption dataset and ensure an even distribution of theft and non‐theft data instances, six different artificially created theft attacks were used. Moreover, the utilization of the XGBoost algorithm for classification, especially to identify malicious instances of electricity theft, yielded commendable accuracy rates and a minimal occurrence of false positives. The proposed model identifies electricity theft specific to the regions, utilizing electricity consumption parameters, and other variables as input features. The authors' model outperformed existing benchmarks like k‐neural networks, light gradient boost, random forest, support vector machine, decision tree, and AdaBoost. The simulation results using the false attacks for balancing the dataset have improved the proposed model's performance, achieving a precision, recall, and F1‐score of 96%, 95%, and 95%, respectively. The combination of ongoing urban expansion and electrification of uses challenges the power grid. In such a context, information regarding customers' consumption is vital to assess the expected load at strategic nodes over time, and to guide power system planning strategies. Comprehensive household consumption databases are widely available today thanks to the roll-out of smart meters, while the consumption of tertiary premises is seldom shared mainly due to privacy concerns. To fill this gap, the French main distribution system operator, Enedis, commissioned Mines Paris to derive load profiles of industrial and tertiary sectors for its prospective tools. The ELMAS dataset is an open dataset of 18 electricity load profiles derived from hourly consumption time series collected continuously over one year from a total of 55,730 customers. These customers are divided into 424 fields of activity, and three levels of capacity subscription. In the context of the growing emphasis on energy conservation and carbon reduction, the widespread deployment of smart meters in residential and commercial buildings is instrumental in promoting electricity savings. In Taiwan, local governments are actively promoting the installation of smart meters, empowering residents to monitor their electricity consumption and detect abnormal usage patterns, thus mitigating the risk of electrical fires. This safety-oriented approach is a significant driver behind the adoption of smart meters. However, the analysis of the substantial data generated by these meters necessitates pre-processing to address anomalies. Presently, these data primarily serve billing calculations or the extraction of power-saving patterns through big data analytics. To address these challenges, this study proposes a comprehensive approach that integrates a relational database for storing electricity consumption data with knowledge graphs. This integrated method effectively addresses data scarcity at various time scales and identifies prolonged periods of excessive electricity consumption, enabling timely alerts to residents for specific appliance shutdowns. Deep learning techniques are employed to analyze historical consumption data and real-time smart meter readings, with the goal of identifying and mitigating hazardous usage behavior, consequently reducing the risk of electrical fires. The research includes numerical values and text-based predictions for a comprehensive evaluation, utilizing data from ten Taiwanese households in 2022. Today, the Internet of Things (IoT) has an important role for deploying power and energy management in the smart grids as emerging trend for managing power stability and consumption. In the IoT, smart grids has important role for managing power communication systems with safe data transformation using artificial intelligent approaches such as Machine Learning (ML), evolutionary computation and meta-heuristic algorithms. One of important issues to manage renewable energy consumption is intelligent aggregation of information based on smart metering and detecting the user behaviors for power and electricity consumption in the IoT. To achieve optimal performance for detecting this information, a context-aware prediction system is needed that can apply a resource management effectively for the renewable energy consumption for smart grids in the IoT. Also, prediction results from machine learning methods can be useful to manage optimal solutions for power generation activities, power transformation, smart metering at home and load balancing in smart grid networks. This paper aims to design a new periodical detecting, managing, allocating and analyzing useful information regarding potential renewable power and energy consumptions using a context-aware prediction approach and optimization-based machine learning method to overcome the problem. In the proposed architecture, a decision tree algorithm is provided to predict the grouped information based on important and high-ranked existing features. For evaluating the proposed architecture, some other well-known machine learning methods are compared to the evaluation results. More energy-consuming devices such as household electronics and more production facilities worldwide are causing increases in electricity demand and energy prices. The public service has difficulty maintaining the energy balance. These problems can be overcome by rapidly transforming the traditional electricity grid into a smart grid (SG) infrastructure. Smart meters (SMs) are an essential component of SGs and have vital tasks. This study has developed an Internet of Things (IoT) based SM that can reach high data rate of 38,400 bps or frequency of 160 MHz, using SQL Server for data storage and bidirectional data transmission with 174 W total load. In this way, consumers can track their energy consumption hourly, daily, and monthly, learn how much they spent on consumption, and receive warnings for a power outage. A fuzzy system and mobile application software are integrated into the SM structure for all these purposes. For many years, energy monitoring at the most disaggregate level has been mainly sought through the idea of Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM). Developing a practical application of this concept in the residential sector can be impeded by the technical characteristics of case studies. Accordingly, several databases, mainly from Europe and the US, have been publicly released to enable basic research to address NILM issues raised by their challenging features. Nevertheless, the resultant enhancements are limited to the properties of these datasets. Such a restriction has caused NILM studies to overlook residential scenarios related to geographically-specific regions and existent practices to face unexplored situations. This paper presents applied research on NILM in Quebec residences to reveal its barriers to feasible implementations. It commences with a concise discussion about a successful NILM idea to highlight its essential requirements. Afterward, it provides a comparative statistical analysis to represent the specificity of the case study by exploiting real data. Subsequently, this study proposes a combinatory approach to load identification that utilizes the promise of sub-meter smart technologies and integrates the intrusive aspect of load monitoring with the non-intrusive one to alleviate NILM difficulties in Quebec residences. A load disaggregation technique is suggested to manifest these complications based on supervised and unsupervised machine learning designs. The former is aimed at extracting overall heating demand from the aggregate one while the latter is designed for disaggregating the residual load. The results demonstrate that geographically-dependent cases create electricity consumption scenarios that can deteriorate the performance of existing NILM methods. In this research, the main objective is to design a smart meter to measure electricity consumption in households with communications based on long-range wide area network (LoRaWAN) wireless technology. Two devices have been designed, a smart meter for electrical energy in households (SMEEH) and a LoRa network supervisor (LNS), which optimises the LoRAWAN parameters using the teaching–learning-based optimisation (TLBO) algorithm. This algorithm allows obtaining the parameters' spreading factor, bandwidth, and code rate so that the minimum value of the packet loss rate (PLR) is reached, and the load profiles of the households are modelled in real time using cloud data storage. The algorithm implemented in the LNS determines the most appropriate parameters of the LoRaWAN by checking data traffic in real time. The household's electrical energy measuring system obtains data through sensors. Load profiles of households obtained by measuring the voltage, current, and active power with the SMEEH using the TLBO algorithm are more accurate. They allow the consumer and/or company to adjust the time and perform actions such as energy management and tariff adjustments. In addition, LoRaWAN optimisation means less data loss, more reliable load profiles, mean relative errors lower than 7.7%, and improved network performance. As an important edge device of power grid, smart meters enable the detection of illegal behaviors such as electricity theft by analyzing large-scale electricity consumption data. Electricity theft poses a major threat to the economy and the security of society. Electricity theft detection (ETD) methods can effectively reduce losses and suppress illegal behaviors. On electricity consumption data from smart meters, ETD methods always train deep learning models. However, these methods are limited to extract different electricity consumption characteristics between independent users, and the pattern differences between users cannot be actively learned. Such difficulty prevents ETD further performance improvement. Therefore, a novel ETD method is proposed, which is the first attempt to apply supervised contrastive learning for electricity theft detection. On the one hand, our method allows the detection model to improve its detection performance by actively comparing users' representation vectors. On the other hand, in order to obtain high-quality augmented views, largest triangle three buckets time series downsampling is adopted innovatively to improve model stability through data augment. The introduction of smart meters and time-use survey data is helping decision makers to understand the residential electricity consumption behaviour behind load profiles. However, it can be difficult to obtain the actual detailed consumption data due to privacy issues. Synthesising residential electricity consumption profiles may be an alternative way to develop synthetic load profiles that initially starts by reviewing the existing synthetic load profile methods. The purpose of this review is to identify the recent methods for synthesising residential electricity load profiles by conducting a rigorous standalone literature review. This review study has been applied and presented transparently and is replicable by other researchers. The review has answered the following research questions: the definition, concept and roles of residential electricity load profile and synthesised data; recent approaches and methods; research purposes; applicable simulations and validation methods of the final selected studies. The results show that the most applied approach in modelling residential electricity load profiles is the bottom-up approach. As it is detailed, it suitable to reflect the local residential behaviour in electricity consumption. Consequently, it is more complex to develop and calibrate the model as identified in the results. Despite the widespread use of artificial intelligence-based methods in detecting electricity theft by smart grid customers, current methods suffer from two main flaws: a limited amount of data on electricity theft customers compared to that on normal customers and an imbalanced dataset that can significantly affect the accuracy of the detection method. Additionally, most existing methods for detecting electricity theft rely solely on one-dimensional electricity consumption data, which fails to capture the periodicity of consumption and overlooks the temporal correlation of customers' electricity consumption based on their weekly, monthly, or other time scales. To address the mentioned issues, this paper proposes a novel approach that first employed a time series generative adversarial network to balance the dataset by generating synthetic data for electricity theft customers. Then, a hybrid multi-time-scale neural network-based model was utilized to extract customers' features and a CatBoost classifier was applied to achieve classification. Experiments were conducted on a real-world smart meter dataset obtained from the State Grid Corporation of China. The results demonstrated that the proposed method could detect electricity theft by customers with a precision rate of 96.64%, a recall rate of 96.87%, and a significantly reduced false detection rate of 3.77%. This study analyses the expected utilization of an urban distribution grid under high penetration of photovoltaic and e-mobility with charging infrastructure on a residential level. The grid utilization and the corresponding power flow are evaluated, while varying the control strategies and photovoltaic installed capacity in different scenarios. Four scenarios are used to analyze the impact of e-mobility. The individual mobility demand is modelled based on the largest German studies on mobility "Mobilität in Deutschland", which is carried out every 5 years. To estimate the ramp-up of photovoltaic generation, a potential analysis of the roof surfaces in the supply area is carried out via an evaluation of an open solar potential study. The photovoltaic feed-in time series is derived individually for each installed system in a resolution of 15 min. The residential consumption is estimated using historical smart meter data, which are collected in London between 2012 and 2014. For a realistic charging demand, each residential household decides daily on the state of charge if their vehicle requires to be charged. The resulting charging time series depends on the underlying behavior scenario. Market prices and mobility demand are therefore used as scenario input parameters for a utility function based on the current state of charge to model individual behavior. The aggregated electricity demand is the starting point of the power flow calculation. The evaluation is carried out for an urban region with approximately 3100 residents. The analysis shows that increased penetration of photovoltaics combined with a flexible and adaptive charging strategy can maximize PV usage and reduce the need for congestion-related intervention by the grid operator by reducing the amount of kWh charged from the grid by 30% which reduces the average price of a charged kWh by 35% to 14 ct/kWh from 21.8 ct/kWh without PV optimization. The resulting grid congestions are managed by implementing an intelligent price or control signal. The analysis took place using data from a real German grid with 10 subgrids. Controlling energy consumption is a serious environmental problem due to global warming and pollution. Feedback on electricity consumption is used as a tool for consumers to better control their consumption and ultimately save energy. As a matter of fact, limited motivation and lack of knowledge about consumption are the main obstacles for households to act on smart meter incentives. A comprehensive analysis of household-scale interventions and their emission reduction potential was found to be lacking, although policy decisions addressing climate change and all mitigation options for information were evaluated. Therefore, in the study, meta-analysis method was conducted using data from 43 studies to obtain precise estimates of the effect of different incentives on housing consumption. In the literature, it has been observed that monetary, informative and behavioral incentives can have an effect between 6.4% and 7.4% on the amount of consumption. The results of the meta-analysis show that personal feedback and monetary information are more effective in reducing consumption than real-time feedback and monetary incentives. User behaviour, human mistakes, and underperforming equipment contribute to wasted energy in buildings and industries. Identifying anomalous consumption power behaviour can help to reduce peak energy usage and change undesirable user behaviour. Furthermore, decreasing energy consumption in buildings is difficult because usage patterns vary from one building to the next. So, the main contribution in this manuscript is to propose a lightweight architecture for smart meter to identify abnormalities in power consumption for each building individually using machine learning (ML) models and implement on a Single Board Computer. To detect daily and periodic pattern anomalies, two models of anomaly detection based on supervised and unsupervised ML algorithms are built and trained where numerous algorithms were utilised to select the best algorithm for each model. Also, the proposed approach enables iterative procedure modifications by retraining the two anomaly detection models on data aggregator server based on the received data meter from the specific smart meter to give better power service to clients while minimising provider losses. In the smart grid, electricity price is a key element for all participants in the electric power industry. To meet the smart grid's various goals, Demand-Response (DR) control aims to change the electricity consumption behavior of consumers based on dynamic pricing or financial benefits. DR methods are divided into centralized and distributed control based on the communication model. In centralized control, consumers communicate directly with the power company, without communicating among themselves. In distributed control, consumer interactions offer data to the power utility about overall consumption. Online auctions are distributed systems with several software agents working on behalf of human buyers and sellers. The coordination model chosen can have a substantial impact on the performance of these software agents. Based on the fair energy scheduling method, we examined Vickrey and Dutch auctions and coordination models in an electronic marketplace both analytically and empirically. The number of software agents and the number of messages exchanged between these agents were all essential indicators. For the simulation, GridSim was used, as it is an open-source software platform that includes capabilities for application composition, resource discovery information services, and interfaces for assigning applications to resources. We concluded that Dutch auctions are better than Vickrey auctions in a supply-driven world where there is an abundance of power. In terms of equity, Dutch auctions are more equitable than Vickrey auctions. This is because Dutch auctions allow all bidders to compete on an equal footing, with each bidder having the same opportunity to win the item at the lowest possible price. In contrast, Vickrey auctions can lead to outcomes that favor certain bidders over others, as bidders may submit bids that are higher than necessary to increase their chances of winning. Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) considers different approaches for disaggregating energy consumption in residential, tertiary, and industrial buildings to enable smart grid services. The main feature of NILM is that it can break down the bulk electricity demand, as recorded by conventional smart meters, into the consumption of individual appliances without the need for additional meters or sensors. Furthermore, NILM can identify when an appliance is in use and estimate its real-time consumption based on its unique consumption patterns. However, NILM is based on machine learning methods and its performance is dependent on the quality of the training data for each appliance. Therefore, a common problem with NILM systems is that they may not generalize well to new environments where the appliances are unknown, which hinders their widespread adoption and more significant contributions to emerging smart grid services. The main goal of the presented research is to apply a domain adversarial neural network (DANN) approach to improve the generalization of NILM systems. The proposed semi-supervised algorithm utilizes both labeled and unlabeled data and was tested on data from publicly available REDD and UK-DALE datasets. As part of building the smart grid, there is a massive deployment of so-called smart meters that aggregate information and communicate with the back-end office, apart from measuring properties of the local network. Detailed measurements and communication of, e.g., consumption allows for remote billing, but also in finding problems in the distribution of power and overall to provide data to be used to plan future upgrades of the network. From a security perspective, a massive deployment of such Internet of Things (IoT) components increases the risk that some may be compromised or that collected data are used for privacy-sensitive inference of the consumption of households. In this paper, we investigate the privacy concerns regarding detailed readings of smart meters for billing purposes. We present Gridchain, a solution where households can opt-in to hide their consumption patterns and thus make Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) more challenging. Households form groups where they can trade real consumption among themselves to achieve reported consumption that would be resistant to NILM. Gridchain is built on a publish/subscribe model and uses a permissioned blockchain to record any trades, meaning that dishonest households can be discovered and punished if they steal from other households in the group or the electricity company in the end. We implement and release a proof of concept of Gridchain and use public datasets to allow reproducibility. Our results show that even if an attacker has access to the reported electricity consumption of any member of a Gridchain group, this reported consumption is significantly far from the actual consumption to allow for a detailed fingerprint of the household activities. Compute-intensive Internet of Things (IoTs) applications have led to the edge computing paradigm. Edge computing decentralizes the IT infrastructure in multiple edge data centers (EDCs) across the access networks to reduce latency and network congestion. Edge computing can benefit significantly from different aspects of smart grids to achieve lower energy consumption and greater resilience to electricity price fluctuations. This paper presents a modeling, simulation, and optimization (M&S&O) framework for analyzing and dimensioning smart grid-aware edge computing federations. This tool integrates aspects of a consumer-centric smart grid model to the resource management policies of the EDCs. To illustrate the benefits of this tool, we show a realistic case study for optimizing the energy consumption and operational expenses of an edge computing federation that provides service to a driver assistance IoT application. Summary: User behavior analysis is the research foundation of power load forecasting and power abnormal detection, and it is the theoretical support for smart grid planning and the construction of energy internet. Aiming at the complex characteristics of high‐dimensional, noisy, and multi‐redundant of power load data, this article used the principal component analysis (PCA) to reduce the dimensionality of power data. The density peaks clustering algorithm with shared neighbor and attractiveness (DPC‐SNA) was then used to cluster the data with reduced dimensionality to extract the user's electricity consumption characteristics. The DPC‐SNA algorithm first constructs a sample similarity measurement criterion that shares the similarity of neighbors, on which the local density is defined accordingly. The new local density can effectively distinguish the contributions of local samples and global samples. Incorporating the idea of universal gravitation, a new calculation method of sample attractiveness was defined, and the remaining samples were allocated by the attractiveness matrix. Experiment was performed using the actual load data of special transformer users in a certain area. The results show that there were five typical electricity consumption behavior characteristics in this area, namely, the evening‐peak production type, all‐day production type, multi‐peak production type, daytime production type, and night production type.
