This paper proposes automatic power changeover switch system applied superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) of the Korea electric railway using 25 kV-AC Scott transformer. The electric railway needs neutral section to separate two different electrical power phase to m phase and t phase. While the train passes through the neutral section, the electrical power supply phase is changed over to other phase. And that time, the train must turn off the circuit breaker to avoid transient as ‘inrush-current’ and ‘arc’. These cause negative problems as speed decline of the train, a shorter life of the train circuit breaker. To improve the problems, the inrush current limitation method is proposed. In Korea, the superconducting power cable has been developed since 2001, with the basic specifications of 22.9 kV/50 MVA. The superconducting power cable can carry more than 2 to 5 times higher electric power compared with conventional ones. It is important to test the DC critical current related with its power capacity before applying to the real power grid. In 1995, several international standards organizations including IEC, decided to unify the use of statistical terms related with "accuracy" or "precision" in their standards. It was decided to use the word "uncertainty" for all quantitative (associated with a number) statistical expressions. In this paper, we measured DC critical current of 22.9 kV/50 MVA superconducting power cable with several voltage tap and analyzed the uncertainty with these results. Offshore wind farm (WF) projects have been promoted by support schemes as part of the expansion of renewable energy resources in Korea. This paper examines in detail how the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS), which was adopted post the Feed-in-Tariff scheme in 2012, has had a profound impact on the economic benefits of offshore WFs in Korea. A framework for analyzing the economic viability of RPS is presented and applied to the sixth basic plan for long-term electricity supply and demand in Korea. The electricity market price is forecast using a reformulated probabilistic production cost (PPC) model, and the renewable energy certificate (REC) price is calculated using its determination rule. The results show that the existing RPS will be ineffective in increasing the penetration of offshore WFs in Korea; however, they also indicate that the economic viability of offshore WFs could be improved by adjusting the existing RPS. Abstract: A large AC generator is an important component of the power system. Researches on the AC generator relaying for the next-generation ECMS and an efficient operation of protection control system are necessary. These require developments on detailed generator modeling and internal fault analysis, and prototyping for multifunctional IED device dedicated to next-generation production. In this paper, over-excitation relaying algorithm is one of the main protection elements which have an important role in DGPS(Digital Generator Protection System), was proposed. This paper first briefly introduces a principles of over-excitation and DFT-based gain compensation algorithm was adopted for the frequency measurement. Subsequently, protection scheme of over-excitation was presented. The 765[kV] modeling data of South Korea using EMTP-RV was used for simulations. Power grids deal with the business of generation, transmission, and distribution of electric power. Recently, interest in power quality in electrical distribution systems has increased rapidly. In Korea, the communication network to deliver voltage, current, and temperature measurements gathered from pole transformers to remote monitoring centers employs cellular mobile technology. Due to high cost of the cellular mobile technology, power quality monitoring measurements are limited and data gathering intervals are large. This causes difficulties in providing the power quality monitoring service. To alleviate the problems, in this paper we present a communication infrastructure to provide low cost, reliable data delivery. The communication infrastructure consists of wired connections between substations and monitoring centers, and wireless connections between pole transformers and substations. For the wireless connection, we employ a wireless sensor network and design its corresponding data forwarding protocol to improve the quality of data delivery. For the design, we adopt a tree-based data forwarding protocol in order to customize the distribution pattern of the power quality information. Abstract: In recent years, many countries have been endeavoring to exploit the offshore wind energy in terms of overcoming the limitations of on-land wind energy. Considering that mountains cover 70 percent of the Korean Peninsula and arable plains for wind energy are negligibly small, Korean government aggressively drives the offshore wind development of the Korean Peninsula. In this context, KEPCO-RI (Korea Electric Power Corporation-Research Institute) has been performing a feasibility study for construction of the first offshore wind farm in Korea, including wind resource assessments around the Korean Peninsula. This paper provides a summary of the offshore wind resources of the Korean Peninsula, by analyzing marine buoy datasets measured at 5 positions over the period of 12 years, the QuikSCAT satellite data measured over 9 years, and a numerical wind map based on meteorological data measured for 4 years. Based on these datasets, wind resources are assessed, and economical efficiency is evaluated by means of the expected capacity factor. Abstract: The west and south coastal region of Korea has very strong tidal current speeds and therefore accommodates many suitable sites for the application of TCP (Tidal Current Power). The maximum current speed recorded in the south is up to 6.5 m/s. Unlike other renewable energy sources, TCP is an extremely reliable, predictable and continuous energy source as the current pattern and speed can be predicted throughout the year. One of the essential components in a TCP device is the rotor converting the inflow current into the rotational energy. The design optimization of the rotor is very important to maximize the power production. The performance of the rotor can be determined by various parameters including the number of blades, shape, sectional size, hub, diameters etc. The blade of the rotor is one of the essential components which can convert tidal current energy into rotational energy to generate electricity. The variable blade properties determine the performance, efficiency and stability of the turbine system. This paper presents the design procedure for a 300 kW tidal current turbine blade. The HAT turbine model was designed based on the wind mill turbine design principles together with known turbine theories. To verify the compatibility of the turbine design method and to analyze the properties of design factors, the 3D CFD model was applied with the ANSYS CFX program. The characteristics and performances of the blades can be applied in the design of 300 KW and larger capacity TCP rotors. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The nuclear industry has made so great efforts to attain safe and economically viable Nuclear Power Plants all over the world. Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA) applications are required now more than ever in order to operate Nuclear Power Plants. In this paper, the unavailability model of Engineered Safety Feature (ESF) actuated components, which is part of the Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plant (KSNPP) PSA model, is used to analyze the effects of Surveillance Test Interval (STI) extension of Engineered Safety Feature Actuation System (ESFAS) on the unavailability of the ESF actuated components. To develop a more accurate and realistic PSA model, the loop controller modules of Plant Control System (PCS) are also modeled on the KSNPP PSA model. The fault tree developed by each ESF actuated component includes the component failure, ESFAS signal failure, and loop controller module failure of PCS. When the ESFAS STI is extended from one month to three months, the unavailability of ESF actuated components partially increased by 10%. This shows the STI extension of ESFAS has minor effects on the unavailability of the ESF actuated components. The effects of ESFAS STI extension of KSNPP on the unavailability of the ESF actuated components as well as Core Damage Frequency (CDF) and Large Early Release Frequency (LERF) is less than expected. That result indirectly indicates that the ESFAS in KSNPP is designed well enough to extend the ESFAS STI. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The existing literature models innovation in pollution control as a reduction in marginal abatement costs. We show that this assumption is inappropriate for production process innovations such as fuel switching. Algebraically, we examine the effects of different innovation types on marginal abatement cost curves, showing that some desirable innovations increase marginal abatement costs. Empirically, we estimate marginal abatement costs for sulfur dioxide by measuring the output distance function for electric power in Korea. Regression results confirm that production process innovations did raise marginal abatement costs in this case.
