In spite of the recent reforms, the Mexican education system still shows remarkable deficiencies, high rates of desertion and low numbers of enrollments at high school and university levels. Desertion problems in young people can be associated to problems like delinquency, unemployment and international migration. Beyond the failures of the educative sector that affect the permanence of the students, some evidences suggest that dropout problems are associated with the increase in income inequality. In this investigation, we start from the hypothesis that income differences have diminished the educative demand, although returns by schooling are high. We use the household income and expenditure survey of Mexico, the Quantile regression methodology and a probabilistic model; we confirmed the previous hypothesis, finding that an increase of 10% in family income elevates the probability of investing in education in 2.67%. Additionally, the marginal profits gained from being educated showed a negative effect on the probability of being educated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
