Purpose: The study aimed to examine the concept and attributes of the quality of clinical nursing education for new graduate nurses. Methods: This study adopted a hybrid model introduced by Schwartz-Barcott and Kim. In the theoretical stage, the meaning and attributes of the quality of clinical nursing education for new graduate nurses were determined by analyzing eight articles. In the fieldwork stage, data were collected using semi-structured interviews with five new graduate nurses and seven experienced nurses. The data were analyzed by qualitative content analysis methods developed by Elo and Kyngӓs. In the final analysis, a final result was arrived at comparing, contrasting, and integrating the attributes of the concepts derived in the theoretical and field-work stages. Results: The quality of clinical nursing education for new graduate nurses was identified as excellence or the standard of education for new graduate nurses that would support them in adapting to clinical settings and transitioning to professional nurses. The attributes of the quality of clinical nursing education were founded to possess three dimensions, six categories, and 18 attributes. The multidimensional attributes of the quality of clinical nursing education for new graduate nurses were confirmed as education resources, design, method, content, evaluation, interaction, and outcome under the three dimensions of input, process, and output. Conclusion: The concept and nature of the quality of clinical nursing education observed in this study can be utilized as a basis for the future development, evaluation, and improvement of clinical nursing education for new graduate nurses in healthcare organizations.

Purpose: This study aimed to develop the examination objectives based on nursing competency of the Korean Nursing Licensing Examination.Methods: This is a validity study to develop the examination objectives based on nursing competency. Data were collected in December 2021. We reviewed the literature related to changing nurse roles and on the learning objectives for the Korea Medical Licensing Examination and other health personnel licensing examinations. Thereafter, we created a draft of the nursing problems list for examination objectives based on the literature review, and the content validity was evaluated by experts. A final draft of the examination objectives is presented and discussed.Results: A total of 4 domains, 12 classes, and 85 nursing problems for the Korean Nursing Liscensing Examination were developed. They included the essentials of objectives, related factors, evaluation goals, related activity statements, related clients, related settings, and specific outcomes.Conclusion: This study developed a draft of the examination objectives based on clinical competency that were related to the clinical situations of nurses and comprised appropriate test items for the licensing examination. Above results may be able to provide fundamental data for item development that reflects future nursing practices.

Aims and objectives The objective of this study was to examine differences in personal characteristics, core practice competency and role stress according to levels of teaching efficacy among clinical nurse educators working in general hospitals. Background In the clinical setting, successful adaptation to instruction among practicing clinical nurse educators is challenging. Design Secondary analysis of data through a cross-sectional study design was adopted. Methods Originally, 565 nurses were recruited from general hospitals; 364 were included in this study. Participants were nurses with more than 1 year of experience in various settings from 16 general hospitals wherein nursing students trained for clinical practicum in five cities in South Korea. Self-reported data were collected via the Teaching Efficacy, Core Practice Competency and Perceived Stress Scales assessing clinical education-related teaching efficacy, core practice competency and role stress. In the analyses, comparison between nurses with high and low teaching efficacy was conducted. We have followed through the EQUATOR (e.g. STROBE) research checklist for the preparation of this manuscript. Results According to univariate analysis, levels of teaching efficacy were shown to be higher with age, longer clinical careers, in those undergoing a doctoral course or with a doctorate, previous experience in providing clinical education and enrolment in continuing education for clinical education. In the multivariate analysis, enrolment in continuing education for clinical education, assessment and intervention skills, critical thinking skills, teaching skills and role ambiguity were associated with level of teaching efficacy among nurse educators. Conclusion Based on the results of this study, we recommend that nursing administrators should foster the recognition of personal characteristics in potential clinical nurse educators or preceptors with high teaching efficacy. Relevance to clinical practice Nurses should be supported by providing them with opportunities for professional development to enhance teaching efficacy.

Critical reflection develops nurses’ critical thinking and clinical reasoning competency. It is necessary to develop a validated scale to measure critical reflection competency considering the clinical situation and nursing context. Therefore, this study analyzed the concept of critical reflection, developed a scale to measure critical reflection competency, and verified its validity and reliability. The concept of critical reflection and components of the scale were confirmed through literature review and results of previous studies on content analysis. A total of 64 preliminary items were derived on a 5-point Likert scale. The adequacy of vocabulary and expression was checked, and a content validity test was conducted. An I-CVI value of 0.88–1.00 was computed. Construct validity was conducted through an exploratory factor analysis, and data collected from 296 clinical nurses were analyzed. Five factors and nineteen items were derived, and the explanatory power was found to be 53.02%. Cronbach’s α of the scale was 0.853. Future studies need to develop a critical reflection education program and utilize this concept as an educational strategy. We propose a study to verify the effect of applying an educational program using the critical reflection competency scale developed in this study.

To develop a scale to assess nursing practice readiness and verify its validity and reliability.Practice readiness refers to the attitude and characteristics of new employees that enable them to successfully adapt to the workplace. For new graduate nurses to receive on-the-job training appropriate to their individual competency level, a scale to assess nursing practice readiness is needed.A methodological study was conducted in two phases: (1) development of the scale through a literature review and interviews related to nursing practice readiness; (2) confirming construct validity, criterion-related validity and reliability of the developed scale.Data were collected from 430 new graduate nurses in South Korea. The validity and reliability of the scale were verified using maximum likelihood exploratory factor analysis with promax factor rotation, confirmatory factor analysis using maximum likelihood estimation, Pearson correlation, analysis of variance and Cronbach's alpha.The Nursing Practice Readiness Scale consisted of 35 items for five factors: clinical judgment and nursing performance, professional attitudes, patient-centeredness, self-regulation and collaborative interpersonal relationship. Confirmatory factor analysis results revealed an adequate model fit. Construct validity and criterion-related validity were verified and all factors achieved a Cronbach's α greater than 0.80.The developed scale can evaluate educational outcomes and determine the need for additional support, which can improve the workplace adaptation of new graduate nurses, patient safety and quality of care.

Purpose: This study explored the possibility of using the Angoff method, in which panel experts determine the cut score of an exam, for the Korean Nursing Licensing Examination (KNLE). Two mock exams for the KNLE were analyzed. The Angoff standard setting procedure was conducted and the results were analyzed. We also aimed to examine the procedural validity of applying the Angoff method in this context.Methods: For both mock exams, we set a pass-fail cut score using the Angoff method. The standard setting panel consisted of 16 nursing professors. After the Angoff procedure, the procedural validity of establishing the standard was evaluated by investigating the responses of the standard setters.Results: The descriptions of the minimally competent person for the KNLE were presented at the levels of general and subject performance. The cut scores of first and second mock exams were 74.4 and 76.8, respectively. These were higher than the traditional cut score (60% of the total score of the KNLE). The panel survey showed very positive responses, with scores higher than 4 out of 5 points on a Likert scale.Conclusion: The scores calculated for both mock tests were similar, and were much higher than the existing cut scores. In the second simulation, the standard deviation of the Angoff rating was lower than in the first simulation. According to the survey results, procedural validity was acceptable, as shown by a high level of confidence. The results show that determining cut scores by an expert panel is an applicable method.

Background Academic resilience is an important characteristic that helps nursing students, who must engage in intensive learning and clinical practice, to overcome academic stress and adapt to their school and the clinical field. Objectives To determine the characteristics of nursing students with high academic resilience. Design This study used a cross-sectional design. Setting Three universities in South Korea. Subjects We recruited a convenience sample of 254 nursing students. Methods Academic resilience, general characteristics, clinical practice stress, clinical practice satisfaction, and social-affective capability were assessed via self-reported questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-squared test, and analysis of variance with Tukey's post hoc test. Results The mean academic resilience score was 3.79. A greater proportion of respondents with high levels of academic resilience had good interpersonal relationships (χ2 = 35.175, p Conclusion Based on our results, students with high academic resilience are more likely to continue their studies and benefit from programs that strengthen their social-affective capability. We therefore propose that nursing school curriculum focus on enhancing social-affective capability.

This study was conducted to investigate the correlations between social–emotional competence (SEC) and academic achievement (AA) among nursing students and to compare students’ level of each core skill of SEC (critical thinking disposition, self-directed learning, creativity, emotional intelligence, problem-solving, and collaboration) and academic achievement (clinical performance and subjective academic achievement). A cross-sectional design was adapted. Data were collected from 195 nursing students in the junior and senior years who had participated in clinical practicum from four universities in South Korea. General characteristics, levels of critical thinking disposition, self-directed learning, creativity, emotional intelligence, problem-solving, collaboration, and academic achievement were collected via self-reported questionnaire. Canonical correlation analysis was performed to evaluate the relationship between SEC and AA. The canonical correlation coefficient between SEC and AA was 0.762. Critical thinking disposition (Rs = 0.89), problem-solving (Rs = 0.86), and cooperation (Rs = 0.80) made the most important contributions to SEC. Clinical performance (Rs = 0.95) and subjective AA (Rs = 0.57) were correlated with AA. SEC should be addressed to improve the AA of nursing students. All core skills of SEC should be regularly promoted. It is particularly urgent for nursing students to improve their creativity.

Purpose The purpose of this study was to identify and assess from nursing students and nurses in the clinical field what constitute good instruction, through the review of nursing students' opinions and clinical field demands. Methods The study design was used Creswell's exploratory sequential design by collecting and analyzing qualitative data obtained from interviews and then analysis of quantitative data. The participations were 79 seniors in nursing schools and 85 nurses with less than three years of clinical experience. The data were collected through individual interviews and analyzed based on Elo and Kyngas's content analysis method. The quantitative data were collected using the questionnaire developed based on qualitative results and analyzed by SPSS 23.0 program and Importance Performance Analysis (IPA). Results The results showed that IPA extracted seven items with high importance but low satisfaction: "nursing fads and trends," "teacher-learner communication and reflection," "materials used in clinical settings such as monitoring results and test results," "special presentations by experienced practitioners," "instruction assures learners' comprehension," "accurate and detailed evaluation standards" and "feedback on homework and exam." Conclusion The factors comprising good instruction were verified, and the necessity for additional efforts to improve high importance and low performance factors was noted. Therefore, this study can serve as a guide for nursing education facilities and educators in developing of a thorough education system with excellent instruction designed to achieve an ideal nursing education.

Background Critical reflection is effective in improving students’ communication abilities and confidence. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a work-based critical reflection program to enhance novice nurses’ clinical critical-thinking abilities, communication competency, and job performance. Methods The present study used a quasi-experimental design. From October 2014 to August 2015, we collected data from 44 novice nurses working in an advanced general hospital in S city in Korea. Nurses in the experimental group participated in a critical reflection program for six months. Outcome variables were clinical critical-thinking skills, communication abilities, and job performance. A non-parametric Mann-Whitney U-test and a Wilcoxon rank sum test were selected to evaluate differences in mean ranks and to assess the null hypothesis that the medians were equal across the groups. Results The results showed that the clinical critical-thinking skills of those in the experimental group improved significantly (p = 0.003). The differences in mean ranks of communication ability between two groups was significantly statistically different (p = 0.028). Job performance improved significantly in both the experimental group and the control group, so there was no statistical difference (p = 0.294). Conclusions We therefore suggest that a critical reflection program be considered an essential tool for improving critical thinking and communication abilities among novice nurses who need to adapt to the clinical environment as quickly as possible. Further, we suggest conducting research into critical reflection programs among larger and more diverse samples.

Clinical nurses play a vital role in clinical practice education; thus, it is necessary to help clinical nurses have teaching efficacy through the development and application of systematic education programs.To identify nurses' teaching efficacy for clinical education and analyze the influencing factors of teaching efficacy.The study used a cross-sectional design. We used a convenience sample of 263 nurses from two hospitals. Teaching efficacy, general characteristics, and perception of clinical practice education were collected via self-reported questionnaires. Teaching efficacy was measured using Hwang's (2006) questionnaire, while perception of clinical practice education was measured using the Clinical Nurse Teacher Survey developed by Nishioka et al. (2014). Participants completed the questionnaire directly. The collected data were then analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVAs, and multiple regression analysis with PASW Statistics 18.0.The mean total score of teaching efficacy was 72.5 (range 21-105). The leadership for students subscale had the highest score (3.56±0.59). The factors influencing teaching efficacy were length of clinical career (β=0.26, p0.001) and perceptions of work satisfaction (β=0.20, p=.005), clinical supervisory relationship (β=0.18, p=.010), and nursing at the hospital ward (β=0.13, p=.029). Altogether, these variables explained 28% of the variance in teaching efficacy in nurses.Based on these results, nursing educators might need to develop greater confidence in their knowledge and enhance control of their teaching strategies. Nursing schools and hospitals might need to provide greater support and educational opportunities to nurse clinical practice instructors. Furthermore, constructing a system of cooperation between these colleges and educational hospitals, developing programs to enhance teaching efficacy, and identifying the clinical instructor's role are all necessary to promote clinical practice education.

Background Simulation-based nursing education is an increasingly popular pedagogical approach. It provides students with opportunities to practice their clinical and decision-making skills through various real-life situational experiences. However, simulation approaches fall along a continuum ranging from low-fidelity to high-fidelity simulation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect size of simulation-based educational interventions in nursing and compare effect sizes according to the fidelity level of the simulators through a meta-analysis. Method This study explores the quantitative evidence published in the electronic databases EBSCO, Medline, ScienceDirect, ERIC, RISS, and the National Assembly Library of Korea database. Using a search strategy including the search terms “nursing,” “simulation,” “human patient,” and “simulator,” we identified 2279 potentially relevant articles. Forty studies met the inclusion criteria and were retained in the analysis. Results This meta-analysis showed that simulation-based nursing education was effective in various learning domains, with a pooled random-effects standardized mean difference of 0.70. Subgroup analysis revealed that effect sizes were larger for high-fidelity simulation (0.86), medium-fidelity simulation (1.03), and standardized patients (0.86) than they were for low-fidelity and hybrid simulations. In terms of cognitive outcomes, the effect size was the largest for high-fidelity simulation (0.50). Regarding affective outcome, high-fidelity simulation (0.80) and standardized patients (0.73) had the largest effect sizes. Conclusions These results suggest that simulation-based nursing educational interventions have strong educational effects, with particularly large effects in the psychomotor domain. Since the effect is not proportional to fidelity level, it is important to use a variety of educational interventions to meet all of the educational goals.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a revised version of the clinical critical thinking skills test (CCTS) and to subsequently validate its performance. Methods: This study is a secondary analysis of the CCTS. Data were obtained from a convenience sample of 284 college students in June 2011. Thirty items were analyzed using item response theory and test reliability was assessed. Test-retest reliability was measured using the results of 20 nursing college and graduate school students in July 2013. The content validity of the revised items was analyzed by calculating the degree of agreement between instrument developer intention in item development and the judgments of six experts. To analyze response process validity, qualitative data related to the response processes of nine nursing college students obtained through cognitive interviews were analyzed. Results: Out of initial 30 items, 11 items were excluded after the analysis of difficulty and discrimination parameter. When the 19 items of the revised version of the CCTS were analyzed, levels of item difficulty were found to be relatively low and levels of discrimination were found to be appropriate or high. The degree of agreement between item developer intention and expert judgments equaled or exceeded 50%. Conclusion: From above results, evidence of the response process validity was demonstrated, indicating that subjects respondeds as intended by the test developer. The revised 19-item CCTS was found to have sufficient reliability and validity and will therefore represents a more convenient measurement of critical thinking ability.

Summary Background The use of simulation as an educational tool is becoming increasingly prevalent in nursing education, and a variety of simulators are utilized. Based on the results of these studies, nursing facilitators must find ways to promote effective learning among students in clinical practice and classrooms. Objective To identify the best available evidence about the effects of patient simulation in nursing education through a meta-analysis. Methods This study explores quantitative evidence published in the electronic databases: EBSCO, Medline, ScienceDirect, and ERIC. Using a search strategy, we identified 2503 potentially relevant articles. Twenty studies were included in the final analysis. Results We found significant post-intervention improvements in various domains for participants who received simulation education compared to the control groups, with a pooled random-effects standardized mean difference of 0.71, which is a medium-to-large effect size. In the subgroup analysis, we found that simulation education in nursing had benefits, in terms of effect sizes, when the effects were evaluated through performance, the evaluation outcome was psychomotor skills, the subject of learning was clinical, learners were clinical nurses and senior undergraduate nursing students, and simulators were high fidelity. Conclusions These results indicate that simulation education demonstrated medium to large effect sizes and could guide nurse educators with regard to the conditions under which patient simulation is more effective than traditional learning methods.

In this study, to discuss the suitability of the procedure for and elements of the evaluation of nursing education curriculums, study trends for such evaluation were analyzed. The future direction of the evaluation of nursing education curriculums viewed based on the results of previous studies on the evaluation of nursing education curriculums is as follows. Effort to evaluate nursing education programs through the collection of more diverse data is necessary, and since the control of the quality of nursing skills education is very important because of the nature of the specialty, the evaluation should be more practical rather than being limited to the existing conventional accreditation and evaluation methods, specifically reviews of self-evaluation reports and evaluation by visits and interviews.

The aim of this study was to examine the roles of care helpers through job analysis. To do this, this study used the Developing A Curriculum Method (DACUM) to classify job content and a multi-dimensional study design was applied to identify roles and create a job description by looking into the appropriateness, significance, frequency, and difficulty of job content as identified through workshops and cross-sectional surveys conducted for appropriateness verification. A total of 418 care helpers working in nursing facilities and community senior service facilities across the country were surveyed. The collected data were analyzed using PASW 18.0 software. Six duties and 18 tasks were identified based on the job model. Most tasks were found to be ?占퐄mportant task?? scoring 4.0 points or above. Physical care duties, elimination care, position changing and movement assistance, feeding assistance, and safety care were identified as high frequency tasks. The most difficult tasks were emergency prevention, early detection, and speedy reporting. A summary of the job of care helpers is providing physical, emotional, housekeeping, and daily activity assistance to elderly patients with problems in independently undertaking daily activities due to physical or mental causes in long-term care facilities or at the client?占퐏 home. The results of this study suggest a task-focused examination, optimizing the content of the current standard teaching materials authorized by the Ministry of Health and Welfare while supplementing some content which was identified as task elements but not included in the current teaching materials and fully reflecting the actual frequency and difficulty of tasks.

The objectives of this study were to (a) evaluate changes in speech intelligibility in a group of 110 adolescent users of cochlear implants who were first assessed in elementary school (CI-E) and later in high school (CI-HS) and (b) examine factors influencing speech intelligibility performance at the CI-E and CI-HS sessions.Participants were 110 adolescents who participated in an earlier study examining 181 young elementary school-aged children. Primary outcome measures included speech intelligibility under quiet and multispeaker background conditions and consonants correct produced in the sentences. Multiple linear regressions were used to evaluate how participant, family, and performance measures influenced their speech production during adolescence. Performance measures included estimates of speech perception, working memory, sign enhancement, and duration of seven-syllable sentences. Participant and family measures included duration of deafness, performance intelligence quotients, gender, family size, and socioeconomic status. Principal component analyses were used to construct common variables across highly intercorrelated measures. Three sets of multiple linear regressions evaluated the contributions of the variables to the variance associated with adolescent speech intelligibility.Speech intelligibility and consonants correct significantly increased nearly 22% between the two test sessions. Speech intelligibility significantly decreased by approximately 20% in the multispeaker babble condition relative to the quiet condition. Duration of seven-syllable sentences significantly decreased during the two test sessions. Data revealed that 65.8% of the variance in adolescent speech intelligibility was predicted from participant, family, and performance measures observed in elementary school. Forty-nine percent of the variance at adolescence was accounted for by the participant, family, and performance measures observed during the high school test session. Evaluation of variance including participant and family measures at both time periods, in conjunction with the adolescent performance measures, accounted for 49% of the variance in adolescence performance. After contributions from participant and family variables at the elementary and adolescent test sessions were removed, 21% of the variance in adolescent speech intelligibility was due to the performance measures at adolescence. Independent predictors of performance at adolescence included negative effects of sign enhancement and duration of seven-syllable sentences.Substantial improvements were made in consonant accuracy, sentence duration, and speech intelligibility between elementary and high school test sessions. Reductions in speech intelligibility performance suggest that allophonic variations, distortions, or use of speech sounds in a nonambient language may contribute to the reductions observed in multispeaker background conditions. Although a significant amount of variance in adolescent performance is accounted for by participant and family characteristics, elementary school speech production and an early reliance on speaking and listening independently account for variance in adolescence speech intelligibility. Over and beyond all the contributions made by participant, family and performance measures, greater reliance on oral communication, and shorter sentence durations independently account for variance at adolescence.

This study investigated the critical thinking dispositions and skills of senior nursing students. Study participants were students enrolled in associate (n = 137), baccalaureate (n = 102), and RN-to-BSN (n = 66) programs accredited by the Korean Ministry of Education. The California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory (CCTDI) and California Critical Thinking Skills Test (CCTST) were used. A comparison of the CCTDI scores revealed a statistically significant difference between the students enrolled in different programs (F = 4.159, p = 0.017), as did a comparison of the CCTST scores (F = 24.205, p < 0.0001). Within the total sample (n = 305), the relationship between CCTDI and CCTST scores was significant (r = 0.305, p = 0.000). Developments in medical technology, the growing number of older adults and patients with chronic illnesses, and the demand for high-quality nursing care have led to various, increasingly complex, professional, legal, and educational issues within the nursing workplace. Therefore, nurses need creativity and critical thinking skills to make the decisions required of them in their nursing practice. In line with this, when conducting a survey of the effectiveness of nursing education, the necessity of critical thinking skills cannot be overlooked. In fact, the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) (1999) and American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) (1998) require the concept of critical thinking be included as one of the core elements of curricula and that it be measured as an outcome when evaluating nursing education. In 1998, during the evaluation of colleges of nursing conducted by the South Korean Council for University Education, several universities presented the fostering of critical thinking as one of the terminal learning goals of nursing education based on the idea that critical thinking is important not only in the nursing workplace, but also in nursing education. To evaluate the effectiveness of Korea's current nursing education curriculum, focus was placed on current students in South Korea's three systems of nursing education. Each curriculum's effectiveness can be evaluated by indexing critical thinking dispositions and skills. This article intends to offer insight into the first steps necessary in reorganizing nursing education by comparing these evaluations of each of the three systems. To this end, we conducted a comparative study of the critical thinking dispositions and skills of students in 3-year associate degree (ADN), 4-year baccalaureate (BSN), and 5-year RN-to-BSN programs. The RN-to-BSN program requires students to finish a separate 2-year program after the initial 3-year ADN program. The purpose of this study was to compare the critical thinking ability of students enrolled in associate, baccalaureate, and Registered Nurse-Bachelor of Science in Nursing (RN-to-BSN) programs in Korea. The participants were 301 undergraduate nursing students. The instrument used for this study was the Watson & Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, and analysis of variance with Scheffe's multiple comparison. The average critical thinking ability score was 41.59. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students scored significantly higher on critical thinking than the other 2 groups. Students < or = 22 years of age scored higher than the other age groups on critical thinking. This study provides preliminary evidence that the length and content of an educational program is as important as its focus on enabling students to develop their critical thinking abilities. This finding suggests a need to infuse critical thinking activities early in existing secondary school curricula as a way of encouraging students to develop their thinking abilities earlier.

This research was conducted to determine the effects of a fall prevention program on knowledge, self-efficacy, prevention activity, and depression in the low-income elderly women.The design of this study was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. There were 22 subjects in the experimental group and 22 in the control group. A fall prevention program was performed for approximately 40 minutes, once a week for 6 weeks.The results of this study were as follows: There were statistically significant differences of knowledge, self-efficacy, and prevention activity related to falls and depression between the experimental group and control group.In conclusion, the fall prevention program used in this study is appropriate for the elderly, therefore this program is strongly recommended for community-based health and welfare centers.
