Children with reading difficulties have problems recognising words accurately and quickly (Müller et al., 2020). The most commonly recommended method to automate word recognition is repeated reading (Hattie, 2009; NICHD, 2000; Therrien, 2004). In repeated reading, students read the same text aloud repeatedly for a defined number of times (Meyer & Felton, 1999) or until they achieve an established improvement in reading accuracy and reading speed (Samuels, 1979). This repeated reading allows readers to better memorise the written image of the words, resulting in an immediate increase in the number of correctly read words and to positive emotions (Chard et al., 2002; Stevens et al., 2017). In the medium term, these lead to higher levels of students’ reading performance and reading motivation, which are frequently reported as positive outcomes of repeated reading interventions when compared with a control group (NICHD, 2000; d = 0.41). However, these effects seem to depend on how well the method of repeated reading fits to a student’s individual reading abilities (Chard et al., 2009; Therrien, 2004). For instance, Fuchs et al. (2021) found that the lowest-performing students profited more from a phonological awareness intervention than from a repeated reading intervention. These differential effects are consistent with a review by Chard et al. (2009), indicating that repeated reading does not improve the reading achievement of all students alike. The question remains whether the effects of repeated reading also depend on the reading material. It is still unclear whether reading continuous texts or whether reading word lists is equally or even more appropriate, and whether the material’s appropriateness depends on students’ prior reading skills. On the one hand, a continuous text could facilitate the reading flow of higher-performing readers by embedding words in context and thus automate word recognition. This assumption is in line with top-down processes in cognitive models of reading comprehension (e.g., Kintsch, 1988), which assume that a reader’s prior knowledge and context can facilitate automatic word recognition by providing expectations about the words that are likely to appear next. Accordingly, Therrien & Kubina (2007) found that context increased both reading speed and word recognition compared to isolated words (N=16). On the other hand, isolated words might improve automatic word recognition by allowing readers to focus on smaller components first. This idea corresponds with bottom-up processes in cognitive reading models (Kintsch, 1988), assuming that reading comprehension depends on the speed of automatic word recognition. If a reader’s automatic word recognition is still very low, context may have less effect because this information is not available in a reader’s working memory. It could thus be helpful for lower-performing readers to focus on isolated words where no propositions need to be formed. Correspondingly, Levy et al. (1997) reported positive effects for reading word lists on reading fluency (N=28). In sum, prior research supports the effectiveness of repeated reading interventions, but effects may depend on the reading material and on students’ reading abilities. This study therefore aims at better understanding the effects and the process of repeated reading by addressing the following research questions: 1. Are there differences after a repeated reading intervention with continuous texts (EG1), word lists (EG2) and a control group (CG) regarding students’ reading achievement and reading motivation? 2. Are there differences during a repeated reading intervention using continuous texts vs. word lists regarding a) the number and development of words read correctly, and b) the average level and development of affect? 3. Are effects of the reading material on students’ a) reading achievement and b) reading motivation mediated by the level and by the progress of a) words read correctly and b) affect during the intervention? 4. Are the effects of the material on reading achievement and reading motivation moderated by students’ initial reading performance? The results will expand both our understanding of how readers develop word recognition skills and how repeated reading interventions should be implemented in classrooms to support children with reading difficulties.

Preregistration of the manuscript "Predictors of teachers' behavioral intentions in inclusive education and their changes over time - a competitive test of hypotheses".

In education, among the most anticipated consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic are that student performance will stagnate or decline and that existing inequities will increase. Although some studies suggest a decline in student performance and widening learning gaps, the picture is less clear than expected. In this study, we add to the existing literature on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on student achievement. Specifically, we provide an analysis of the short- and mid-term effects of the pandemic on second grade reading performance in Germany using longitudinal assessments from over 19,500 students with eight measurement points in each school year. Interestingly, the effects of the pandemic established over time. Students in the first pandemic cohort even outperformed students from the pre-pandemic cohorts and showed a tendency towards decreased variances during the first lockdown. The second pandemic cohort showed no systematic mean differences, but generally had larger interindividual differences as compared to the pre-pandemic cohorts. While the gender achievement gap seemed unaffected by the pandemic, the gap between students with and without a migration background widened over time—though even before the pandemic. These results underline the importance of considering effects of the pandemic across cohorts, large samples, and fine-grained assessments. We discuss our findings considering the context-specific educational challenges and in terms of practical implications for teachers’ professional development.

Professional development programs substantially contribute to advancing evidence-based reforms in educational contexts. Due to the Corona pandemic and digitalization efforts, online formats are increasingly coming into focus as an alternative form of teachers’ professional development. However, there are many open questions concerning instructional features which improve teacher knowledge and foster favorable attitudes towards the content in online trainings. This study therefore investigates the extent to which aspects of self-regulation of e-learning influence the acquisition of knowledge and the development of positive attitudes toward the subject matter. In this study, a treatment group (online training with self-regulative elements) will participate in an e-learning course, while a control group (online training without self-regulative elements) will watch an e-lecture. To that end, this study addresses the following research questions: 1. How do aspects of self-regulative learning (self-paced learning, individual feedback) influence teachers’ declarative and procedural knowledge and their attitudes towards the content? 2. How are these effects moderated by learners’ individual conditions (prior knowledge, self-efficacy, individual learning preferences)?

This is an interview study investigating teachers' perceptions of what constitutes suitable PD programs for differentiated reading interventions.

This study seeks to examine teachers’ preferences for professional development features depending on contextual, individual and concept-specific factors. While reading skills of elementary school students vary widely (Frith, 1986; NICHD, 2000; Hussmann et al., 2017), results of intervention studies show that students’ reading performance improve particularly when there is a close fit between individual learning levels and the concept used for reading promotion (Bernard et al., 2019; Connor, 2019). Formative assessment seeks to address these two aspects through the implementation of a cycle of diagnostics, feedback and reading promotion: By (1) diagnosing students’ learning level, (2) conducting feedback sessions and (3) deriving an appropriate support measure, each child is provided with effective reading support appropriate to his or her learning level. However, the comparison of medium to high effects in reading interventions (Hattie, 2009) and low effects in school practice (Cheung & Slavin, 2016) visualizes that the implementation of such reading interventions is not automatically given when providing teachers with a reading concept only. Ultimately, the teacher is at the center of the implementation process, deciding if and how to implement a new concept in the classroom (Guskey, 1985; Clarke & Hollingsworth, 2002). Therefore, implementation research must focus on the question of what and how teachers need to learn in order to professionally use innovations in their classrooms (Bormann, 2011). Previous research on professional development (PD) has found that the design of PD activities plays a key role in the effectiveness of implementation. Specifically, Desimone (2009) provides five core features of effective professional development, which are (1) content focus, (2) active learning, (3) coherence, (4) duration, and (5) collective participation. However, the teachers’ perspective on Desimone’s core features remains unclear. Teachers’ ideas of appropriate duration for PD activities, for instance, may deviate from what research has shown to be effective and may therefore lead them to abstain from PD programs altogether. Consequently, it is important to ask teachers what and how PD programs should be designed to help them in successfully using evidence-informed innovations. Several studies have shown that teachers vary in response to the same PD, meaning that individual teacher characteristics and contextual factors such as composition of students and school characteristics have to be taken into account (Lipowsky & Rzejak, 2017). The extent to which perceptions of the environment and individual characteristics affect PD aspirations is highly relevant for designing more differentiated PD activities in the future. Thus, this study seeks to examine teachers’ preferences for professional development features depending on contextual, individual and concept-specific factors. To that end, four research questions will guide this study: 1. Do teachers’ preferences of PD differ from Desimone’s empirical features of effective PD? 2. How do aspects of the content (e.g., simple vs. complex) which are provided in PD influence teachers’ preferences for PD features? 3. How do individual teacher characteristics influence their preferences for PD features? 4. How do (perceived) contextual factors influence teachers’ preferences for PD features?

Das Instrument zur Erfassung des erfolgreichen Transfers von Leseförderkonzepten in die Schulpraxis operationalisiert in fünf Kurzskalen zentrale Erfolgskriterien für den Transfer von Leseförderkonzepten im Sekundarbereich (Akzeptanz, Machbarkeit, Wiedergabetreue, Kooperation, Lernerfolg). Mit den Kurzskalen kann ökonomisch erfasst werden, ob aus Sicht der Lehrkräfte der Transfer einer innovativen Maßnahme zur Leseförderung im Schulkontext gelungen ist. (DIPF/Orig.)

Formatives Assessment gilt als eines der wirksamsten Rahmenkonzepte zur Förderung schulischen Lernens. Es bezeichnet die lernbegleitende Beurteilung von Schülerleistung mit dem Ziel, diagnostische Informationen zu nut­zen, um Unterricht und Lernen zu verbessern. Grundlegende Merkmale von formativem Assessment sind die Klärung von Lernzielen, die Diagnose der individuellen Leistung sowie eine darauf basierende Rückmeldung und Förderung. Die Gestaltung von formativem Assessment reicht von spontanem on-the-fly-Assessment bis hin zu im Voraus geplantem, formalisiertem und curricular eingebettetem Assessment. Stu­dien untermauern die lernförderliche Wirkung von formativem Assessment, wobei diese von der konkreten Gestaltung abhängt. Obwohl politische, wissenschaftliche und schulische Entwicklungen zur Implementation von formativem Assessment bei­tragen, ist die Umsetzung nach wie vor herausfordernd. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird der aktuelle Forschungsstand dargelegt, indem eine begriffliche Bestimmung und Charakterisierung des Konstrukts vorgenommen wird, empirische Befunde zur Wirksamkeit präsentiert sowie implementationsrelevante Entwicklungen und Herausforderungen beschrieben werden. Die präzise Vorhersage der mathematischen Kompetenz am Ende der Grundschulzeit ist für die Unterrichts- und Förderplanung entscheidend. Unspezifische Prädiktoren der mathematischen Kompetenz (z. B. Intelligenz) können dabei von solchen unterschieden werden, die spezifische mathematische Fertigkeiten messen (z. B. arithmetischer Faktenabruf). Individuelle Lernverläufe bieten eine weitere, bislang selten genutzte Informationsquelle, um Leistungsstände am Schuljahresende vorherzusagen. In diesem Beitrag wurde die Rolle spezifischer, unspezifischer und lernverlaufsbezogener Prädiktoren für die arithmetische Kompetenz sowie die Vorhersage einer Rechenschwäche untersucht. Eine Stichprobe von N = 196 Grundschulkindern der dritten und vierten Klasse (Alter: M = 106.12 Monate, SD = 7.53, 107 Mädchen) bearbeitete zu Beginn des Schuljahres Testverfahren zur Erfassung der fluiden Intelligenz (Kurzform CFT 1-R/CFT 20-R), der Leseflüssigkeit (SLS 2-9), der arithmetischen Kompetenz (DEMAT 2+/DEMAT 3+, Arithmetik) und des arithmetischen Faktenabrufs (DIRG Multiplikation). Im zweiten Schulhalbjahr wurde in etwa zweiwöchigen Abständen zehnmal ein Lernverlaufstest Mathematik (LVD-M 2-4) durchgeführt. Zur Vorhersage der arithmetischen Kompetenz am Schuljahresende (DEMAT 3+/4, Arithmetik) bzw. einer Rechenschwäche (DEMAT Arithmetik T < 40) wurden gemischte lineare und logistische Modelle berechnet. Zudem wurden indirekte Effekte über die Lernverlaufsparameter mittels Mediatoranalysen untersucht. Eine statistische Dominanzanalyse ergab, dass die Lernverlaufsparameter gegenüber den spezifischen und unspezifischen Prädiktoren signifikant bedeutsamer waren, die spezifischen Prädiktoren dominierten zudem die unspezifischen. Die Vorhersage von Rechenschwäche am Ende des Schuljahres wurde anhand des arithmetischen Faktenwissens (DIRG) durch die Lernverlaufsparameter partiell mediiert. (DIPF/Orig.), A precise prediction of mathematical skills at the end of elementary school is a decisive factor in planning teaching activities and interventions. In this context, unspecific predictors of mathematical skills (e.g. intelligence) can be distinguished from predictors that are specific for mathematical skills (e.g. arithmetic fact retrieval). Individual patterns of growth in achievement over time offer an additional source of information for predicting learning outcomes. In this study, we assessed the role of specific, unspecific, and growth-related predictors for arithmetic skills or mathematical learning difficulties at the end of the school year. At the beginning of the school year, N = 196 elementary school students in third and fourth grades (age: M = 106.12 months, SD = 7.53, 107 girls) were administered tests of fluid intelligence, reading fluency, curricular arithmetic skills, and arithmetic fact retrieval. During the second term, growth in arithmetic skills was assessed by a learning progress assessment. Prediction of arithmetic skills or mathematical learning disabilities at the end of the school year was based on linear or logistic mixed models, respectively. Indirect effects transmitted by growth parameters were assessed using mediation analysis. A statistical dominance analysis showed that growth-related parameters were substantially more important than specific or unspecific predictors, and specific predictors dominated unspecific predictors. Mathematical learning disabilities were indirectly affected by arithmetic fact retrieval, mediated by growth parameters. In diesem Kurzbeitrag schildern wir Herausforderungen bei der Normierung von Verfahren zur Lernverlaufsdiagnostik, die sich bei der Statusdiagnostik in dieser Form nicht stellen. Diese betreffen insbesondere die Frage, ob Normen für regulären Unterricht oder intensive Förderung benötigt werden, aber auch die Unterschiedlichkeit von Lernzuwächsen in Abhängigkeit von der erfassten Kompetenz, des verwendeten Messverfahrens, des Untersuchungszeitraums und bestimmter Schülermerkmale. Darüber hinaus weisen Lernverläufe im Unterschied zu einmaligen Testungen die statistische Besonderheit auf, dass die Größe der Vertrauensintervalle für den Lernzuwachs von der Anzahl der verfügbaren Messungen abhängt. Basierend auf einer Analyse dieser Herausforderungen schlagen wir Designmerkmale und Analyseschritte bei der Normierung von Verfahren zur Lernverlaufsdiagnostik vor. These challenges concern the question whether norm values refer to business-as-usual instruction or effective treatments, and the variability of learning growth as a function of the respective competence, assessment, seasonal effects, and student characteristics. Moreover, in contrast to confidence intervals of single assessments, confidence intervals of slopes are statistically specific in that they depend on the number of assessments. Hierzu wird eine umfangreiche Liste von beispielhaft aufgeführten Themen präsentiert. Ebenso werden Vorschläge für die Bewertung der Berichte über die Studienprojekte entwickelt., The article deals with the role of courses in educational foundations as regards the preparation, monitoring and evaluation of practical internships in schools during teacher education («Praxissemester»). It sketches the concept of research-based learning, outlines possible contents and organizational forms of these courses, and also presents a list of possible topics for study projects that pre-service teachers have to carry out during their internship. Finally, criteria for the evaluation of the students’ reports on their study projects are developed.

Empirische Sonderpädagogik 3 (2011) 3, S. 243-255, In der vorliegenden Studie wurde untersucht, wie sich der Einsatz einer computergestützten Maßnahme zur Lernverlaufsdiagnostik auf den Lernzuwachs leseschwacher Viertklässler auswirkt. Dazu wurde die Entwicklung der Leseleistung der jeweils sechs leseschwächsten Schülerinnen und Schüler aus 24 Klassen (n = 144) verglichen, die entweder einer Gruppe mit Lernverlaufsdiagnostik oder einer Kontrollgruppe zugewiesen wurden. Über einen Zeitraum von sechs Monaten (acht Messzeitpunkte) erhielten die Lehrkräfte in der Gruppe mit Lernverlaufsdiagnostik (17 Klassen) Informationen über die Entwicklung der Leseleistungen, während die Lehrkräfte in der Kontrollbedingung (7 Klassen) statusdiagnostische Informationen zum Leistungsniveau ihrer Schülerinnen und Schüler erhielten. Die Lernzuwächse in einem standardisierten Lesetest (ELFE 1-6) fielen in derjenigen Gruppe signifikant höher aus, in der die Lehrkräfte Informationen zum Lernverlauf erhielten (d = 0.50). Eine Befragung der Lehrkräfte zum Einsatz der computergestützten Maßnahme zur Lernverlaufsdiagnostik im Regelunterricht ergab, dass diese sich gut in den Unterrichtsalltag implementieren ließ, und dass die Informationen zur Planung von Fördermaßnahmen genutzt wurden. (DIPF/Orig.), This study examines the effects of a computer-based individual progress monitoring on learning growth of low performing readers. In each of 24 classes the six poorest readers (n = 144) were identified and participated in a progress monitoring group or a control group. Over a period of six months students of the progress monitoring group completed eight computer-based tests and their teachers (n = 17) received diagnostic information about their learning curves, while teachers of the control group received a one-time information about their students’ level of achievement. Growth in reading was assessed with a standardized reading test (ELFE 1-6) and was found to be significantly higher for the progress monitoring group (d = 0.50). Teachers reported that the computer-based individual progress monitoring was practicable in general educational settings and that they used the information to plan instruction. (DIPF/Orig.)

Thema der Studie ist der Experteneffekt beim kooperativen Lernen. Bei der kooperativen Unterrichtsmethode des Gruppenpuzzles erarbeiten sich die Lernenden in Expertengruppen selbstständig einen Teilbereich des gesamten Lernstoffs. Anschließend vermitteln sie einander in Stammgruppen wechselseitig ihr Expertenwissen. Insgesamt verbringen die Schüler somit vergleichsweise viel Zeit mit der Erarbeitung und Vermittlung ihres jeweiligen Expertenthemas. Das wirft im Hinblick auf die Bewertung der Lernwirksamkeit des Gruppenpuzzles die Frage auf, ob Lerngewinne vor allem auf einen Experteneffekt, also auf den Wissenszuwachs im jeweils eigenen Expertenbereich zurückgehen. In sechs dritten Klassen (N=208) wurden drei sechsstündige Unterrichtseinheiten nach der Gruppenpuzzlemethode im Mathematikunterricht durchgeführt. In einer weiteren Klasse (N=54) wurden im Verlauf eines gesamten Schuljahres in gleicher Weise sechs Unterrichtseinheiten im Sachunterricht durchgeführt. In lehrergeleitet unterrichteten Kontrollklassen wurden die gleichen Unterrichtsinhalte behandelt. Für die Auswertung wurde eine Differenzierung nach Expertenbereichen sowie nach Themenexperten, Nicht-Experten und lehrergeleitet unterrichteten Schülern vorgenommen. Die Ergebnisse bestätigten die Vermutung, dass die Lerngewinne auch auf einen Experteneffekt zurückgehen. Die Leistungszuwächse bei den Themenexperten fielen höher aus als bei den lehrergeleitet unterrichteten Schülern und den jeweiligen Nicht-Experten. (DIPF/Orig.), Jigsaw is a cooperative learning technique, where students are arranged in temporary "expert groups" each striving to acquire an expertise in an assigned section of an overall topic. Within these expert groups, students work on their segment using a collection of selected material, but without any further support from their teacher. Once students have become experts in their section of the topic, they form home groups, where they mutually teach each other what they've learned. In the end, students have spent a considerable amount of time acquiring and communicating expert knowledge. Regarding learning efficacy of Jigsaw, the question arises whether increases in knowledge are due mainly to the "expert effect", that is the knowledge acquired only in the specific, assigned expert section of the overall topic. In six third grade classrooms, three units each consisting of six math lessons were taught using the Jigsaw method. In an additional third grade, six science units were taught, also using the Jigsaw method. The control group consisted of traditionally taught classrooms. For the analyses, experts, non-experts and traditionally taught students were compared. Results showed an "expert effect", indicating that expert students showed superior increase in knowledge in their expert section of the topic compared to non-experts and traditionally taught students. Unterrichtswissenschaft 31 (2003) 2, S. 166-183, Am Beispiel eines neu entwickelten Programms zur Förderung des Textverstehens bei Schülern der 5. Jahrgangsstufe wird über Erfahrungen bei der Programmimplementation in den Schulunterricht berichtet. Inhaltlich zielt das Programm auf die Verbesserung des Leseverständnisses durch den Erwerb kognitiver und metakognitiver Strategien. Die Trainingsmaßnahmen werden im Klassenverband von den unterrichtenden Lehrerinnen und Lehrern selbst durchgeführt. Der Programmdurchführung gehen Schulungsmaßnahmen zur Lehererfortbildung voraus. Die Praktikabilität der entwickelten Unterrichtsmaterialien und die Angemessenheit der Umsetzung der Trainingsprinzipien in unterrichtlichen Handeln werden über die Auswertung von Lehrertagebüchern und durch Unterrichtsbeobachungen erfasst. Aus den Erfahrungen in neun Schulklassen lassen sich wertvolle Hinweise für eine konzeptionelle Überarbeitung gewinnen. Sie betreffen insbesondere Präzisierungen bei der zeitlichen Planung von Unterrichtsabläufen und inhaltlichen Veränderungen bei den Unterrichtsmaterialien. Mehr Gewicht muss lehrerseitig auf die Befähigung zu einem adaptiven und flexiblen Umgang mit dem Materialangebot gelegt werden. Die Maßnahmen zur Leherfortbildung, deren Theorielastigkeit beklagt wurde, sind hierauf abzustimmen. (DIPF/Orig.)
